News Lakers Team Notes

2008 USA Olympic Team, Carmelo Anthony & Dwight Howard Included In Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame Class Of 2025

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the Class of 2025, which features nine inductees who will be celebrated during the festivities from Sept. 5-6.

The announcement took place in San Antonio, host city of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Final Four and was broadcast live on ESPN2.

The North American Committee includes: 2008 U.S. Men’s Olympic Men’s Basketball Team, Carmelo Anthony, Danny Crawford, Billy Donovan and Dwight Howard.

The Women’s Committee includes: Sue Bird, Sylvia Fowler and Maya Moore.

The Contributor’s Committee includes: Micky Arison.

“The Hall of Fame is thrilled to celebrate the Class of 2025, a group that has left a profound mark on the sport at every level,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “This year’s class embodies excellence, innovation, and an enduring passion for basketball—whether through game-changing performances, leadership on the sidelines, or shaping the sport’s global reach. We look forward to honoring this Class and their lasting contributions to the game.”

This year’s group features a few members with ties to the Los Angeles Lakers, namely Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard. While Anthony and Howard didn’t join the Lakers until later in their careers, they’re still fondly remembered for their stints with the purple and gold.

Howard was in Los Angeles for three separate occasions, capturing his first and only title with the franchise in 2020. Meanwhile, Anthony spent his final season in the league with the Lakers, though the team failed to make the playoffs.

Anthony and Howard were also members of the 2008 U.S. Men’s Olympics Team, dubbed the “Redeem Team” as they sought to avenge their bronze medal finish in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Aside from Anthony and Howard, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant headlined the star-studded squad that ended up capturing the gold in Beijing.

James is a shoo-in to qualify for the Hall of Fame once he officially retires, while Bryant was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the 2020 Class that featured Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki.

Bird, Fowler and Moore are considered three of the best WNBA players ever and their inclusion in this year’s class is well-deserved.

Lastly, Arison has overseen three championships with the Miami Heat who have a reputation for their culture and stability as a franchise.

LeBron James congratulates Carmelo Anthony on Hall of Fame election

Carmelo Anthony’s induction into the Hall of Fame was a no-brainer considering all he’s accomplished and LeBron James congratulated his friend on the honor.

Recap: Luka Doncic & Lakers Crush Thunder From Start To Finish On Road

Desperate for wins as the regular season winds down, the Los Angeles Lakers faced a tough road test on Sunday afternoon as they traveled to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder have already locked up the No. 1 seed in the West, and the Lakers certainly played like the more desperate team as they cruised to a 126-99 victory in what was a statement win.

It was the centers that kicked off the scoring in this one with Isaiah Hartenstein and Jaxson Hayes getting the initial buckets for their teams. Then, the superstars got involved with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic making their first shots.

Doncic had two early triples and then after Dorian Finney-Smith got in on the action, the Lakers took a 19-15 lead.

It was all Doncic in the first quarter with 14 points. After a pair of triples by Gabe Vincent and a layup by LeBron James to end it, L.A. took a 42-32 lead into the second.

The Lakers continued to pour it on with seven straight points to begin the second quarter. Austin Reaves began to heat up with back-to-back triples and then James hit one, extending the lead to 20.

Oklahoma City had a response from there with seven straight points, forcing a quick Lakers timeout. L.A. regained control out of the timeout, however, with Finney-Smith and Doncic burying back-to-back 3s.

Doncic was doing whatever he wanted offensively, beating the Thunder off the dribble and creating open looks for his teammates. After leading by as many as 29, the Lakers let go of the rope a bit but still took a 78-56 lead into the halftime locker room. The 78 points were a season-high for the Lakers in a half with them shooting 15-of-22 from deep as a team.

The Lakers came out a bit sloppy to begin the third quarter, but the Thunder couldn’t really capitalize. Reaves helped get his team back on track with a triple though and then Doncic continued his dominant performance.

L.A.’s hot shooting didn’t slow down with Finney-Smith and Vincent each hitting corner 3s. James hit a fadeaway midrange to end the third and the Lakers were cruising with a 103-77 lead.

The Thunder began the final quarter with a 6-2 spurt, which forced a quick timeout by the Lakers to keep things under control. That served its purpose as James responded with a steal and a dunk and then Hachimura hit another triple to effectively put the game out of reach.

What’s next for the Lakers…

The Lakers have a difficult schedule to close out the regular season and that continues with another matchup against the Thunder on Tuesday before Luka Doncic’s return to Dallas for the first time to play the Mavericks on Wednesday.

Dorian Finney-Smith Believes Lakers Are Tough To Beat When He & Gabe Vincent Are Making Shots

While most of the attention goes toward the star players on a team, it is often the role players that make the difference in a team’s success. The Los Angeles Lakers obviously have great star power with Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves, but when they get support from the likes of Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent, they become an entirely different team.

That was the case on Sunday as both Finney-Smith and Vincent knocked down four 3-pointers in the Lakers’ 27-point win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers as a whole were on fire from deep, but getting 26 combined points from those two off the bench really took things over the top.

Finney-Smith spoke about this after the game as well, saying that when he and Vincent are knocking down triples, the Lakers are hard to beat, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“It’s just make or miss… It was a great team win. It’s hard to beat us when me and Gabe are making shots.”

The Lakers brought in Vincent and Finney-Smith for games like this. Both are veterans with a ton of playoff experience who won’t shrink under the bright lights and they have proven as much not only with their shooting, but also what they bring defensively.

Against the Thunder, the Lakers jumped out early and never let up, which was impressive considering the Lakers have had a tendency to blow big leads at times. But Finney-Smith felt the Lakers simply did a great job at executing their game plan:

“We just executed the game plan and kept them off the free throw line. Attention to detail on the defensive end was there, and us just making shots. I think that was just the energy from our defense carrying over.”

The importance of Finney-Smith and Vincent was never more apparent than this past week. The two were also on fire in the Lakers’ win over the Houston Rockets, but were ice cold in their loss to the Golden State Warriors. But the Lakers are banking on them coming through more often than not and if that is the case, a long playoff run is in store for this team.

LeBron James: Lakers trying to build great habits going into playoffs

Obviously a dominant performance over the best team in the West is excellent for the Lakers. But more important, at least in the eyes of LeBron James, is building the right habits as the postseason approaches.

James noted that sometimes a team can play a great game and still lose and other times you can not play great, but still pick up a win. But it is all about habits and LeBron wants the Lakers to continue to build good habits going into the playoffs.

Lakers Injury Report Vs. Thunder: Rui Hachimura Out, Other Key Players Questionable

The Los Angeles Lakers released their injury report for Tuesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Rui Hachimura (left patellar tendinopathy) has been ruled out. Additionally, Luka Doncic (right groin strain), Dorian Finney-Smith (left ankle effusion), LeBron James (left groin strain), Bronny James Jr. (illness), Austin Reaves (right ankle sprain) and Gabe Vincent (left knee effusion) are all listed as questionable.

Coming off their biggest win of the season in Oklahoma City against the Thunder on Sunday, it appears the Lakers could rest all of their key players in the rematch on Tuesday.

Because some results around the league went their way on Sunday, the Lakers only need to win two of their final four games to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Tuesday’s game is the first night of a back-to-back before the Lakers head to Dallas to take on the Mavericks on Wednesday.

It seems the Lakers will likely sit guys out against the Thunder in order to have their full roster ready to go against the Mavericks, which not only is an easier matchup on paper, but also Doncic’s first time back in Dallas and a game he will surely be motivated to win.

With the Lakers beating the Thunder in such dominant fashion on Sunday, sitting guys in the rematch and not allowing them to prove they can compete with the new-look version of L.A. ensures a bit of a psychological edge over the young Oklahoma City team if they were to see them in the playoffs.

The hope, of course, is that none of these injuries are serious. But for Doncic, in particular, there’s no doubt he will do everything in his power to be back on the court in Dallas to take on his former team if he does sit out Tuesday’s game in Oklahoma City.

If all of these questionable players sit out against the Thunder though, then the Lakers would be left with the likes of Jaxson Hayes, Dalton Knecht, Jordan Goodwin, Jarred Vanderbilt, Shake Milton, Markieff Morris, Christian Koloko, Trey Jemison and Alex Len against the best team in the league.

Austin Reaves pleased with Lakers’ play in win over Thunder

Sunday’s win was not only a big one, but pretty surprising as the Lakers dominated the Thunder from start to finish on their home floor. After the game, Austin Reaves spoked about how pleased he was with how the Lakers competed.

“Yeah, it’s huge. They got the best record in basketball I believe and with where the standings are, you can go from third to I believe eighth in the snap of a finger. So for us to come in here and play such a good team the way we did tonight is big and hopefully we can continue that momentum into Tuesday.”

Unfortunately, it looks like Reaves and others may not be on the court on Tuesday.

Lakers Regulars Available For Rematch Against Thunder In First Night Of Back-To-Back

Coming off their biggest win of the season on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers are back in action on Tuesday night against the same team at Paycom Center.

It was originally unclear who would be suiting up for the Lakers as Luka Doncic (right groin strain), Dorian Finney-Smith (left ankle effusion), LeBron James (left groin strain), Austin Reaves (right ankle sprain) and Gabe Vincent (left knee effusion) were all listed as questionable.

That’s in addition to Rui Hachimura (left patellar tendinopathy), Bronny James Jr. (illness) and Maxi Kleber (right foot surgery recovery) being ruled out.

There was some thought about the Lakers potentially punting this game considering it is the first night of a back-to-back before taking on the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

The Lakers only need to win two of their final four games to clinch the third seed in the West and considering the Mavericks are an easier opponent on paper and it also marks Doncic’s return to Dallas for the first time, the thought was that key guys would sit out the second game against the Thunder in order to be ready for the Mavericks.

The other aspect of punting the Oklahoma City game is it would give L.A. a psychological edge heading into the postseason over the No. 1 seed.

It appears that is not the route the Lakers are going, however, as Doncic, Finney-Smith, James, Reaves and Vincent were all upgraded to probable and now are expected to play. It remains to be seen what that means for the Mavericks game, but the Lakers are clearly going for it and looking to beat the Thunder two games in a row on their home court with Oklahoma City again having all of its players available.

If the Lakers win this game, they are not only one step closer to getting the 3-seed, but they will also clinch a playoff berth and avoid the Play-In Tournament for the first time in the last three years.

There certainly is a lot at stake here, making for another very intriguing regular season game between the Lakers and Thunder with only a few left to go before the playoffs.

Recap: Lakers Fall To Thunder After Questionable Luka Doncic Ejection

After the Los Angeles Lakers blew the Oklahoma City Thunder out on Sunday afternoon, the two teams were back in action at Paycom Center again on Tuesday evening.

Despite the Lakers originally listing all of their key players as questionable, they ended up suiting up, which made this another intriguing matchup. Unfortunately, the ending wasn’t very intriguing as Luka Doncic was questionably ejected and then the Thunder went on a run to pull away for a 136-120 win.

The Lakers picked up where they left off on Sunday as Austin Reaves and Dorian Finney-Smith, who was starting for L.A. with Rui Hachimura out, began the game with two 3-pointers each. The Thunder were shooting much better in this one as well though to take an early double-digit lead.

Again, it was Reaves and Finney-Smith that had a response for the Lakers to keep it from getting away early. Doncic then started to heat up and despite the Thunder staying hot, the teams were tied at 43 at the end of a high-paced first quarter.

The shotmaking didn’t slow down to start the second quarter as Reaves and Jalen Williams both stayed hot. The Lakers started turning the ball over, however, and the Thunder took advantage with a quick 10-0 run led by Alex Caruso’s defense. After a timeout by the Lakers, Doncic hit some free throws and a triple to get them back on track.

While the Lakers were defending Shai Gilgeous-Alexander well, it didn’t matter as he was making a number of difficult jump shots. LeBron James finally joined in on the fun to end the half, but the Lakers still went into the locker room facing an 80-72 deficit.

James was dialed in to start the third quarter with eight quick points to cut into the deficit. Doncic then connected on a long triple to regain the lead for L.A.

Jarred Vanderbilt was doing everything for the Lakers on both sides of the ball. With the ridiculous shotmaking slowing down for the Thunder, the Lakers turned a 10-point halftime deficit into a 98-97 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma City got back going offensively with back-to-back triples to start the final quarter. Unfortunately with the game tied, Doncic picked up his second technical foul and was ejected from the game after saying something to a fan, not even the referee.

That took all of the momentum away from the Lakers as the Thunder immediately went on a 24-4 run. Gilgeous-Alexander had no issues closing it out from there for Oklahoma City.

What’s next for the Lakers…

The Lakers won’t have much time for rest as they now travel to take on the Dallas Mavericks in the second night of a back-to-back on Wednesday. That will be an emotional night and a game the Lakers surely want to win as Luka Doncic returns to Dallas for the first time since the trade.

NBA Admits Ejecting Luka Doncic In Lakers Loss To Thunder Was Mistake

The NBA announced that Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic’s technical foul at 7:40 of the fourth quarter on Tuesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder has been rescinded upon league office review.

That puts Doncic at 13 technical fouls on the season, and getting to 16 would result in a one-game suspension.

This technical being rescinded doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering Doncic was yelling something at a heckling fan and referee J.T. Orr mistakenly thought it was aimed at him. Doncic confirmed after the game that was indeed the case.

“Yeah. I mean, you could see it as it happened,” Doncic said. “But I’ve never gotten a fan ejected, never, but if he’s gonna talk, I’m gonna talk back like always. That had nothing to do with the refs, so I didn’t really understand.”

While it is nice the see the NBA admit its mistake and rescind the technical, it unfortunately will not impact the result of the game with the Lakers going on to fall to the Thunder after Doncic was ejected. L.A. led by one point at the time and Oklahoma City closed the game on a 29-12 run.

Doncic had to watch that unfold from the locker room and even though the technical was a mistake on the referee’s part, he still took accountability for putting himself in that position.

“I mean, it was tough. We were right there. I think we fought the whole game, we were down at halftime and came back in the third quarter. We were fighting, so it was tough to see that this kind of situation happened. And that’s on me too, so I feel like I let my team down,” Doncic said postgame.

The Lakers are fighting for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and that loss could end up costing them. While the way things unfolded wasn’t right, Doncic could still use it as a learning experience to avoid it happening again.

Jarred Vanderbilt felt Luka Doncic technical fouls were ‘personal’

The reason Luka Doncic got ejected was because it was his second technical with him also picking up one in the third quarter. That was issued by the same referee J.T. Orr when Doncic was arguing that Jarred Vanderbilt got hit on the head on a layup. After the game, Vanderbilt revealed what Orr said to him and why he felt the technicals for Doncic had meaning behind them.

“He felt like I got hit, which I did get fouled, I got slapped across the head. He was telling the ref that that’s what happened and the ref was just like ‘I’ll talk to anybody but you,’ (talking about) Luka, obviously, so it seemed a little personal at that point. But he was just advocating for me saying I got fouled. The ref, he said basically he’ll talk to anybody on the team, but Luka so I don’t know what that was about.”

Lakers Highlights: Luka Doncic Overcomes Emotional Night, LeBron James Comes Up Clutch Against Mavericks

While the loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder was still fresh, it was hard for the Los Angeles Lakers and Luka Doncic to dwell on it as they continued their road back-to-back against the Dallas Mavericks.

The matchup marked Doncic’s first time back in Dallas since his surprising blockbuster trade to Los Angeles, and all eyes were on the Lakers star when he took the floor against his former team. There was an emotional start to the night as the Mavericks honored Doncic with a heartfelt video tribute that moved him to tears.

Although the focus of the game was understandably on Doncic, the Lakers still had plenty to play for as a win would secure a top-six playoff berth. Although Dallas hung around for most of the night, Los Angeles pulled away in the fourth quarter to pick up a much-needed victory.

Doncic clearly looked comfortable being back on his old floor as he was aggressive from the jump, scoring both inside and outside to get Los Angeles up front early. The Mavericks tried to give Doncic multiple defensive looks, but Doncic torched his old team for 31 first-half points.

While Doncic slowed down in the second half, he sealed the game with a couple of buckets late in the fourth quarter. The crowd gave Doncic a long and well-deserved ovation when he checked out the game as he finished the night with 45 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

LeBron James was the perfect No. 2 option behind Doncic as he let his co-star dominate the first half and picked his spots to score in the second half. James seemed to be conserving his energy for the fourth as he finally asserted his will and physicality in the half court.

Dallas had no answer for James when he got a full head of steam and he made them pay with several drives to the rim. James had an efficient 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Rui Hachimura was a key factor on both ends in the win as he battled Anthony Davis in the post and drained open shots to keep Dallas at bay. Hachimura finished with 15 points.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Appreciated Love In Return To Dallas But Concluded ‘It’s Time To Move On’

The game that the entire basketball world was waiting for finally happened as Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic made his long-awaited return to Dallas to play against his former team the Mavericks.

The Mavericks’ decision to trade Doncic to the Lakers shook the entire NBA and the ripple effects could be felt for years by both franchises. It’s unprecedented for a player like Doncic to be moved without a trade request, though the Lakers certainly won’t complain about acquiring someone who can be the franchise’s next face after LeBron James retires.

In Doncic’s first game back in Dallas, the superstar showed off why Dallas was foolish to trade him as he routinely scored over defenders and made tough shots to give Los Angeles a win. Although he was clearly emotional throughout the evening, Doncic was able to play through it and give the Lakers a top-six playoff berth in the process.

Following the win, the Slovenian star discussed how emotional it was for him to play against the Mavericks and how he finally feels it’s time to move on, via NBA and ESPN:

“Everybody saw me the way I reacted to the video. All these fans, I really appreciate it, man. All the teammates I had, everybody had my back. I’m just happy. I love these fans, I love this city but it’s time to move on.”

Doncic continued to emphasize what he was feeling being back and how much his time with the Mavericks meant to him:

“So many emotions, can’t even explain it. Brought tears to my eyes, like I said I came here as a young kid here at 18 and not know what to expect from NBA and they made me feel at home. It’s just a lot of great, great memories.”

The 26-year-old also admitted he wasn’t sure how he was going to play such an emotionally-charged game but credited his teammates for being there for him:

“I don’t know how I did it because when I was watching that video I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m playing this game.’ But all my teammates had my back, they were really supporting me so I really appreciate that.”

Overall, Doncic did about as well as anyone could have hoped given the circumstances. Now that this game is behind him, hopefully he can feel more at peace.

Luka Doncic feels disrespected by work ethic coming into question

It was jarring to see some of the comments come out from members of the Dallas Mavericks organization following the Luka Doncic trade. People like Mavericks Patrick Dumont and general manager Nico Harrison alluded to Doncic’s work ethic and conditioning as the key reasons why they were OK to trade the superstar.

While Doncic has yet to say a negative word publicly about Dallas, he did admit he felt disrespected when they singled out his work ethic.

Lakers Look To Clinch No. 3 Seed With Victory Over Shorthanded Rockets In Home Finale

The Los Angeles Lakers need just one victory in their final two games to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and their first opportunity to do so comes when they host the Houston Rockets in their regular season home finale.

The Lakers have already clinched a top-6 seed and thus will avoid the Play-In Tournament, but head coach JJ Redick has already said that the team wants to lock in the highest seed possible. As such, the Lakers will have their full roster available as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were both not listed on the injury report while LeBron James was probable.

The Rockets, on the other hand, have already clinched the second seed in the West and don’t have anything to play for in their final regular season games. With health being so important, Houston will be sitting basically all of their normal rotation players, including Alperen Sengun, Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, Dillon Brooks, Tari Eason and Jae’Sean Tate.

The only exception is Jalen Green, though he will likely only play a few minutes in order to keep his consecutive games played streak alive before joining his fellow starters on the bench.

Reaves, Doncic and James combined for just 48 points in the last meeting between these teams, but the Lakers were able to come out on top thanks to Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent each knocking down six 3-pointers. Expecting a performance like that again might be a bit much, but it does show the importance of the Lakers role players, especially when the stars are having a rough night.

Even with the Rockets sitting out most of their key players, this is still a very deep roster and they will continue to play Houston basketball, which is to say, be physical and tough, play great defense and crash the glass. First-round pick Reed Sheppard is very talented and has been waiting all season long for an opportunity and what better chance than against the Lakers. Additionally, Cam Whitmore is also a very dangerous player capable of big nights.

The most important thing for the Lakers is to match the physicality and intensity the Rockets will bring and to keep them off the offensive glass, which is not easy. But the Lakers have shown they are up to the challenge and they better be as they do not want to go into their season finale not having locked down that No. 3 seed. But Houston will not make it easy on them in the least, so they better strap in and be ready to fight.

Lakers Highlights: Luka Doncic Stays Hot Offensively In Win Against Shorthanded Rockets

After beating the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the week, the Los Angeles Lakers entered their Friday night matchup against the Houston Rockets with plenty to play for as a a victory would secure the third seed in the Western Conference.

The Rockets clinched the second seed prior to the game, so the team opted to rest most of its regulars to get extra rest in before the start of the postseason. Meanwhile, the Lakers played their normal rotation to help ensure they wrapped up their seeding before their regular season finale.

Houston remained a pesky team despite having so many players out and even played Los Angeles evenly at points, but the latter’s overwhelming advantage in talent won out and they dominated en route to a 140-109 victory.

All eyes were on Luka Doncic when he played against his former team, and he followed up that magnificent performance with another shooting exhibition. The Rockets were missing their best perimeter defenders which allowed Doncic to dictate terms on offense and get to his spots on the floor.

Doncic saw little to no resistance on some of his shots, including a bevy of stepback 3-pointers that crushed any hopes for Houston’s feeble comeback attempts. Doncic looks like his old self heading into the postseason after dropping a game-high 39 points on 13-of-19 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal in just 31 minutes of action.

Austin Reaves continued his torrid stretch shooting the basketball against an undermanned Rockets team, using his speed and handles to get to the cup as well as knocking down the long ball when he had an open look.

Reaves looked completely comfortable with the basketball in his hands and was able to create plays both off the bounce and finding open teammates. Like Doncic, Reaves had a strong all-around game as he recorded 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.

With Rui Hachimura back in the lineup, Dorian Finney-Smith has shifted back to a bench role but that hasn’t hurt his production. In fact, Finney-Smith was able to take advantage of several wide-open looks from beyond the arc to keep Houston at bay.

Finney-Smith finished third on the team in scoring with 18 points and all of them came from the 3-point line.

What’s next for the Lakers

The Lakers will close the 2024-25 season on Sunday on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers, and then will await to see who their first-round opponent will be after the Play-In Tournament concludes.

Lakers News: JJ Redick Reflects On First Season As Head Coach After Clinching No. 3 Seed

JJ Redick is one game away from completing his first regular season as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers — his first coaching job — and has many things to be proud of. His Lakers won 50 games for the first time since the 2019-20 season and will host a home Game 1 in Los Angeles for the first time since 2012.

Of course, Redick is not going to be satisfied with those accomplishments. He has shown on several occasions this season that he is always going to be in pursuit of the next challenge. And right now, that’s helping guide the Lakers to NBA championship contention, starting with the first round against an opponent that will be determined on Sunday.

On Friday, though, the Lakers helped Redick enjoy the moment by getting ice buckets dumped on him after the win over the Houston Rockets. He used that moment to reflect on some of the ups and downs from the 2024-25 campaign for him and the Lakers.

“I just wanna apologize to Kathy [Montoya],” Redick joked. “Hopefully in the next nine days the $17,000 of damage to the carpet can get fixed. It was about eight ice buckets that were put on me.

“But I think it was just for our group, different versions of this team for the guys that have been here all along, they went through every single peak and valley. I think even this third iteration of this team has gone through a bunch of peaks and valleys.

“I’m just incredibly proud of our team. It’s an accomplishment to win 50 games in the regular season in any year. I think particularly this year, in this Western Conference, it is, and it’s a credit to our players. Each one at different points in time has contributed to winning. They’ve all participated in a winning culture. Our coaching staff, our performance staff, everybody down the line, it’s a great group to be a part of. We want to go win one more game, and we’ll figure out Sunday who we play in the first round.”

Despite this, Redick was not fully ready to reflect on his first season as a head coach, because he knows that so much of the real work begins now.

“Uh, it’s not done,” he said. “And I spent all of three and a half minutes on the flight back from Dallas just thinking about making the playoffs and thinking about the coaching profession. And I think as a coach, you’re obviously judged on regular season wins and losses and your ability to get to the playoffs. But I think the other two things that you’re really judged on are the way you’re able to handle the pressure of the playoffs, the adjustments, the in-game stuff.

“There’s still so much work that we have to do, myself, our staff. And then I think you’re also judged on the culture you create and whether or not your players and everybody in the building like coming to work.”

Redick is not one to bask in the glory of moments while they’re still happening. At the end of the season — whether there is a championship or not — Redick is likely to take some time to reflect on the full campaign and have more succinct answers then.

But for now, the focus is on April 19, the start of the NBA Playoffs.

Austin Reaves believes Lakers can win championship

Lakers guard Austin Reaves believes the Lakers are legitimate contenders and have the ability to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy if they play their cards right.

“As a team, I feel like we can win a championship, to be honest with you,” Reaves said. “And the reason of that is I know that everyone in that locker room believes that and is also bought in to whatever your role is to help us do that. You can go down the line with everybody in there and ask them what their role is and they’ll tell you exactly what it is.

“We’re not unrealistic with each other, and that’s what you have to be to be a good group. You have to be honest with each other, that’s why I give this coaching staff a lot of credit. They come in and they implanted their system and they held guys accountable to whatever they ask them to do and everybody bought in to that.”

Lakers Rule Out LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves & Others In Regular Season Finale Vs. Trail Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers announced that LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and Dorian Finney-Smith have all been ruled out of the regular season finale against the Portland Trail Blazers. Additionally, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt are questionable while Jordan Goodwin is probable.

This does not come as a surprise as the Lakers locked up the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with their win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night. As a result, they have nothing to play for on Sunday afternoon and will give their key players some much-needed rest ahead of the postseason.

Game 1 of the first round will take place at Crypto.com Arena on either next Saturday or Sunday, which means the Lakers’ key players will get more than a week off. This team is confident that they can make a run and win a championship, and being healthy and fresh will be key to making that happen.

James, in particular, can really use the time off as the 40-year-old appeared to tweak his groin against the Rockets. There isn’t any concern about an injury, but having a week to recuperate will certainly do wonders for LeBron.

With some many players out though, the Trail Blazers game will be a nice opportunity for some other guys to get minutes and build a rhythm in case they are needed in the playoffs. Dalton Knecht, Shake Milton, Bronny James, Markieff Morris and Alex Len are among those that should get significant playing time.

Win or lose though, the Lakers have secured a 50-win season, which was JJ Redick’s goal at the start of the year. He will surely want to win this game too, but there’s no doubt that one eye will also be on the other scores across the league that may impact L.A.’s first round matchup.

Who the Lakers play is still up in the air, but it will all be settled by the end of games on Saturday afternoon.

Luka Doncic happy Lakers can get rest before postseason

The Lakers are used the being in the Play-In Tournament the last few years but with them wrapping up the No. 3 seed, they will get a week of rest before they host Game 1 next weekend. That rest is something Luka Doncic is very much looking forward to.

“Big time, big time, but I gotta get some rest obviously, but you know, the good part of the season is coming, so I gotta stay ready, gotta stay locked in, but for sure it’s gonna be great,” Doncic said.

LeBron James & Lakers To Face Anthony Edwards & Timberwolves In First Round Of 2025 NBA Playoffs

The regular season came to an end on Sunday afternoon, which meant the standings and first rounds matchups for the 2025 NBA Playoffs outside of the Play-In Tournament teams got locked in. The Los Angeles Lakers’ regular season finale didn’t have any implications on the standings, but some other results across the league affected their first round opponent.

The Lakers had the luxury of resting their key players and paying attention to other games as they already locked up the No. 3 seed and a 50-win season with their win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night.

That meant that they would be playing the No. 6 seed in the first round, and heading into the regular season finale, that could either be the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves or Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets and Timberwolves both took care of business with wins on Sunday, which meant things came down to the Warriors’ game against the L.A. Clippers. A Warriors would win give them the sixth seed while a Clippers win would secure it for the Timberwolves.

Ultimately, the Clippers came out on top in a back-and-forth overtime game, which secured a first round matchup for the Lakers against Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves in the third versus sixth matchup.

That’s exactly how the Lakers started the season as they beat Minnesota at home on Opening Night. The teams split their four regular season matchups with the home team winning all of them.

While playing a red-hot Timberwolves team in the first round certainly isn’t ideal, the Lakers are confident that they have a team that can go all the way and this will just be the first test on that road.

Lakers News: Bronny James Feels He Grew As Player & Person During Rookie Season

When the Los Angeles Lakers spent a second round draft pick on Bronny James, the eldest son of LeBron James, the selection was met with a lot of criticism.

Many people felt Bronny wasn’t ready for the NBA after playing minimal minutes in his lone season at USC after suffering cardiac arrest.

During his rookie season though, James proved a lot of those doubters wrong as he has made steady improvements to the point where a future in the NBA as a rotation player is a legitimate possibility.

Bronny didn’t play much with the Lakers outside of garbage time but made huge strides in the G League. After the team’s regular season finale in which James made his first start, he discussed those strides he made during his rookie season, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“I thought I got better. I thought I grew as a player and a person. More work to be done. I feel like my progression has been slow, but getting better every day.”

Considering he didn’t get many reps in the NBA, the G League served as a valuable resource for Bronny and he talked about how the time he spent with the South Bay Lakers benefitted him:

“The reps. Just getting some games under my belt and not just sitting and watching. Just being able to go out there and play my game.”

Even though the regular season has come to a close, James has not yet reflected on his rookie season and everything he went through on and off the court:

“Not really. Like you said, I’ve been in the mix of it. But I feel like I have taken some steps in the right direction and I’m looking forward to doing that in the years to come. I feel like I’ve been doing better.”

For a late second round pick like Bronny, teams are just hoping they can show flashes to prove they are on their way to being an NBA player. That’s exactly what James displayed during his rookie season, and now he will have a big offseason coming up as he looks to continue getting better.

Markieff Morris believes Bronny James has bright future

Lakers veteran Markieff Morris has had the chance to be around Bronny James since joining the team and believes the rookie has a bright future in the NBA.

“He’s a hard worker,” Morris recently said of Bronny. “We play stay-ready a lot and he shows that he’s working on his game. He’s getting better day by day. Proud of him just to go out there and make a name for himself. I think he’s a great player and he’s got a great future.”

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Leads NBA In Jersey Sales; LeBron James Ranks Third

Luka Doncic transformed the Los Angeles Lakers from a solid playoff team into a legitimate title contender and the team should feel confident about their chances as the 2025 NBA Playoffs kick off later this week.

The Lakers secured the No. 3 seed and will take on the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, an opponent that Doncic is familiar with as he just saw them in the Western Conference Finals last postseason. Doncic led the the Dallas Mavericks to a five-game victory and represented the conference in the 2024 NBA Finals.

This year, Doncic and company are certainly hoping for a better result as the roster has the necessary star power, depth and coaching to make a real run at a championship. Alongside Doncic is LeBron James, who has happily ceded control over the offense to his co-star but remains an integral piece on both sides of the court.

Both Doncic and James are two of the most popular players in the NBA and the pairing finished first and third, respectively, in total jersey sales for the second half of the 2024-25 season, via the NBA:

— NBA (@NBA) April 14, 2025

Doncic being at the top of the list isn’t a surprise as the Lakers are the most popular franchise in the league and adding a global superstar will provide an obvious boost in jersey sales. L.A.’s market isn’t just limited to the states as they’ve got a big global presence and employing an international star like Doncic is the perfect mix.

Meanwhile, James has perennially seen his name amongst the most popular jerseys in the NBA and it’s no surprise to see him so high on the list this late into his career. In between Doncic and James is Stephen Cury at No. 2, with Jayson Tatum, Jalen Brunson, Victor Wembanyama, Anthony Edwards, Ja Morant, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic comprising the rest of the top 10.

Doncic is the first international player to top the most popular jerseys list and the first player other than Curry or James to top the list since the 2012-13 regular season. According to the NBA, jersey sales on NBAStore.com are up 21% since the Feb. 6 trade deadline, driven largely by Doncic’s trade to the Lakers.

While leading the league in jersey sales is quite the feat, the most important thing for Doncic is winning his first championship. Although Doncic is still chasing after his first ring, he understands that it will take everyone on the Lakers to win a title.

Sasha Vujacic compares Luka Doncic to Kobe Bryant

Luka Doncic is a generational superstar who has shades of several NBA legends in his game. For example, former Los Angeles Laker Sasha Vujacic compared Doncic to franchise legend Kobe Bryant because of their demeanors on the court.

Crypto.com Arena To Host Boxing & Gymnastics During 2028 Olympics In Los Angeles

For the first time since 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers will host Game 1 of a playoff series at Crypto.com Arena when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.

It’s been a long time coming for the Lakers who struggled for large parts of the 2010s while the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic robbed the team of hosting postseason games during their 2020 title run. Following their championship season, Los Angeles was relegated to lower seeds after winning their Play-In Tournament matchups, so that also denied them a chance to host Game 1 of a playoff series.

The city has become well-known for its sports teams and venues, and in just a few short years the Olympic games will be making their way back to Southern California. L.A. will have sporting events all across the county, including right in downtown at Crypto.com Arena.

As far as which sports will be at the arena during the 2028 Olympics, it is currently scheduled to host boxing and gymnastics, via Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the L.A. Times:

In the downtown core, baseball joins boxing, which will have preliminary rounds at the Peacock Theater and finals at Crypto.com Arena. The downtown home of the Lakers and Kings will also host artistic gymnastics, a previously announced move that brought the Summer Games’ premier sport to the host city after initial plans had it slotted for the Forum in Inglewood.

Boxing and trampoline and artistic gymnastics should be fun and exciting events for fans to attend at Crypto.com Arena when the Olympics kick off. A few notable ones like Intuit Dome and Dodger Stadium will be hosting basketball and baseball, respectively. Meanwhile, SoFi Stadium will be the host site for swimming, though it will also be hosting the 2026 FIBA World Cup as well as Super Bowl LXI in 2027.

Being the host city for the Olympics is a huge honor and Los Angeles is more than equipped to handle all the events and tourists that will be in the city come the next few years. Until then, though, the city’s professional sports teams will be chasing after more championships.

The Lakers are in prime position to make a deep postseason run, though head coach JJ Redick understands that playing the Timberwolves presents a challenge as he called them a very difficult opponent.

Rui Hachimura happy Lakers avoided Play-In Tournament

Fortunately for the Lakers, their regulars will get ample rest as the team didn’t have to participate in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Players like Rui Hachimura were relieved not having to play an extra game after years of doing so as they get set for Game 1 against the Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday.

Dwight Howard Predicts Lakers Will Beat Cavaliers In 2025 NBA Finals

The Los Angeles Lakers went from a feisty playoff team to a legitimate title contender almost overnight after their successful trade deadline.

Not only did the Lakers retool around the edges by bringing in someone like Dorian Finney-Smith, but the team completely revamped its offense when they somehow acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. The Doncic trade is still being talked about to this day, and it sounds like general manager Nico Harrison still has no regrets about the deal despite protests from the Mavericks fanbase.

With Doncic on the roster, Los Angeles has every reason to feel confident in its title hopes and the superstar already acknowledged it’ll take everyone including himself to get there.

Former Lakers center Dwight Howard was a member of the last championship team and offered up a bold prediction for this year’s title, via D.J. Siddiqi of Basketball Insiders:

“The Lakers scare me because if LeBron is healthy in the playoffs, it’s going to be tough for teams to beat them in a seven-game series,” Howard told Basketball Insiders in an exclusive interview. “My mind is saying the Lakers are going to win this year. I see the Lakers against Cleveland.”

Howard explained why he picked the purple and gold over the Cavaliers, citing head coach JJ Redick and Doncic as his main reasons why he thinks they’ll win it all:

“I love how the Lakers are playing,” says Howard of his former team. “I love how JJ (Redick) has stayed mentally locked in the whole season, hasn’t allowed any nonsense to affect them. The Luka trade, it really took them over the top. I see them making a deep run in the playoffs. I don’t see a lot of teams beating them in a seven-game series.”

It’s hard to argue with Howard’s logic as Redick has shown he’s capable of maximizing the roster, while Doncic presents a litany of problems for opposing defenses. There’s also the fact that Los Angeles has LeBron James, one of the greatest playoff performers in NBA history and someone who knows his title window is closing.

While teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics are considered the favorites to win their respective conferences, the Lakers shouldn’t be overlooked once the postseason begins.

Luka Doncic Posts Hype Video Ahead Of Lakers’ Playoff Run

After a stunning trade at the deadline, Luka Doncic is preparing for his first playoff run as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Expectations are high for this team, but that is what Doncic relishes as the 26-year-old looks to win his first NBA Championship after coming close multiple times earlier in his career.

Things won’t be easy as the Lakers earned the third seed, which sets up a first round matchup with Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Ahead of Game 1 on Saturday night though, Doncic is clearly excited as he posted a hype video featuring him and his Lakers teammates on social media:

💪

pic.twitter.com/tLDh94VhuW

— Luka Doncic (@luka7doncic) April 17, 2025

Doncic is always one to put the team first, and that is even evident in this video as it featured a lot of highlights of his Lakers teammates in addition to himself. The caption has flexing and hourglass emojis, so Doncic is clearly ready for the start of Game 1.

The Slovenian star has been one of the greatest playoff performers in NBA history to start his career, but he knows it is gonna take everyone on the Lakers’ roster to make a run to the championship. Doncic has plenty of help with LeBron James, Austin Reaves and Co., but the West is loaded so this will have to continue to build chemistry quick after the roster came together on the fly at the deadline.

JJ Redick: Lakers will rely on Luka Doncic to prepare for Timberwolves series

Luka Doncic is the most familiar with this Timberwolves team out of everyone on the Lakers roster as he went up against them in the Western Conference Finals last year where the Dallas Mavericks defeated them in five games.

With that being the case, Lakers head coach JJ Redick naturally will rely on Doncic as he and his staff prepare for this series.

“In my playing career that happened a lot. There’s regular season and there’s playoffs and often times it’s not completely different things but there are nuances to what teams are trying to do against certain opponents. Greg [St. Jean] was on Phoenix last year and got swept by Minnesota –sorry, Greg. Just stating a fact– so he’s got a good level of experience as well. It was literally the thing he said to me as soon as the game was over, so we have a lot of work to do and they’re a really good basketball team.”
