News Lakers Team Notes

Lakers Injury Report: Austin Reaves Probable, Jordan Goodwin Questionable Vs. Knicks

The Los Angeles Lakers released their injury report for Thursday night’s game against the New York Knicks and Austin Reaves (right calf strain), Luka Doncic (right knee contusion) and LeBron James (left foot injury management) are probable while Jordan Goodwin (right ankle sprain) is questionable.

Additionally, Markieff Morris (illness), Rui Hachimura (left patella tendinopathy) and Maxi Kleber (right foot surgery recovery) remain out.

The Lakers have been playing shorthanded in their last few games, but it hasn’t mattered as they keep on winning. They head into Thursday’s game against the Knicks with seven straight victories to their name, taking over the second seed in the Western Conference. This recent stretch of stellar play essentially started against the Knicks in New York a month ago on the night they traded for Doncic.

The Knicks still present a tough challenge for the Lakers to close out their homestand, although JJ Redick’s team is focused on themselves regardless, and they are hoping to get healthy for the final stretch of the regular season.

Reaves has now missed the last two games after suffering a calf injury against the L.A. Clippers last Friday. While it wasn’t a serious injury, the Lakers were being cautious to ensure he is 100% healthy whenever he returns and it doesn’t linger. It appears that will be on Thursday, which would be a huge boost for the Lakers.

Goodwin, who sprained his ankle in the same game Reaves went out, appears to have a chance of playing as well, which means he is at least making progress after being ruled out of the last two games.

Others have stepped up in their absence and the Lakers will need that to continue being the case if Goodwin is out against the Knicks in addition to Rui Hachimura. Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, Dalton Knecht and Shake Milton have all picked up the slack during this win streak for L.A., which has been great to see around the team’s star duo of Doncic and James.

Lakers star LeBron James named Western Conference Player of the Month

The one constant for the Lakers during their recent stretch of wins has been the play of LeBron James, who remains one of the best players in the league at the age of 40.

In fact, James was so great in February that he took home Western Conference Player of the Month honors. It was an NBA-record 41st monthly award for James.

Lakers News: Jarred Vanderbilt Worked On 3-Point Shot While Out With Injury

Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt is one of the best defensive players in the league today. What he brings on that end of the floor is extremely valuable and the energy and attitude that he plays with is necessary for this team.

The one issue for Vanderbilt has always been his outside shot. For as good as he is on defense, his lack of an outside jumper has oftentimes forced him off the floor, especially in the playoffs. So far this season, however, Vanderbilt has been a bit better from the outside and that is all the Lakers need.

Vanderbilt is shooting 35% (7-for-20) from deep, which would be a career-high and this is something he knows he must improve, especially when playing next to Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

“It’s been a work in progress for a while now. Just trying to develop and add stuff to my game,” Vanderbilt said. “I feel like playing with two greats like Luka and Bron, there’s gonna be a lot of opportunities for me in that corner. So just being ready, shot-ready, and being able to capitalize and make the defense honest. I feel like I’m capable of doing that.

“I’ve had some great stretches where I’m making shots but due to injuries, it’s kind of like you’re starting back over from square one. So now I know where my shots are coming from so being able to capitalize and just be ready. With those two guys, you always gotta be shot-ready, two great passers. So just continuing to be ready and continuing to trust the work, that’s the biggest thing. I put a lot of work into it and it’s time to just trust in it and let it fly.”

Injuries have certainly been an issue for Vanderbilt and being on the sideline for an extended period can undo the work put in. But as he noted, Vanderbilt has to be ready to shoot and trust in the work as even if he can just shoot at an average rate from the corners, it gives the Lakers a massive boost.

And, thankfully, Vanderbilt put in a lot of work on his shot even while he was recovering from his foot issues.

“For sure,” Vanderbilt responded when asked if he worked on his jumper while injured. “I did a lot of shooting, whether it was obviously spot shots and just form shooting, kind of retooling some things. Yeah, that’s pretty much all I could do in the recovery process. I feel like I did put a lot of work in but half of it is just trusting the work. I’ve been shooting corner shots every day but you gotta trust it when you get in that position… That was mostly just trusting it and being shot-ready and ready for opportunities. That’s always gonna lead to results.”

Vanderbilt is the Lakers’ best perimeter defender, but his offensive issues have hurt him. If he can be a threat from the corners, the Lakers can keep him on the court without sacrificing offense which would be a massive game changer in the postseason.

Jarred Vanderbilt likes having other ‘dawgs’ on the Lakers

Jarred Vanderbilt is one of the players who bring an attitude to this Lakers team, but he isn’t the only one. Players like Trey Jemison, Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent also bring toughness and an aggressive mentality and Vanderbilt loves that on this squad.

“I love it. That’s the culture we’re trying to set,” Vanderbilt said. “Having multiple ‘dawgs,’ multiple gritty guys that’s gonna go out there and put their body on the line, fight, play hard, defend and do all the dirty work. Having guys like Trey by me, Doe and even Gabe from that second unit coming in and just being dawgs.”

Recap: Lakers Complete Overtime Comeback Against Knicks To Extend Winning Streak To 8

The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the hottest teams in the league since the trade deadline and entered their matchup against the New York Knicks on Thursday night riding a seven-game win streak.

In a highly-anticipated matchup between the league’s two biggest markets, the Lakers were able to overcome the Knicks in overtime and extend their winning streak to eight games with a 113-109 victory.

The two stars kickstarted the offense as Luka Doncic opened the game with a 3-pointer, while LeBron James followed up with a couple of strong drives to the rim to give the Lakers an early 9-4 lead. While Jalen Brunson got going from the perimeter, Doncic matched his output to ensure Los Angeles stayed ahead.

Doncic was able to poke holes in the Knicks defense, getting loose for a layup and finding Jarred Vanderbilt for a dunk to extend the lead to seven. Trey Jemison was a boost off the bench scoring a couple of easy baskets in the paint and he helped the Lakers go into the second leading 31-27 after Brunson beat the buzzer with a jumper.

It was a slower start for the Lakers to begin the second as they struggled to find much rhythm on either end of the court, allowing New York to take its first lead of the night. James got L.A. back on track with more drives to the rim, but the Knicks’ physicality started to irritate Doncic who got called for a technical after the officials missed an obvious foul.

The Lakers offense stalled out despite Doncic’s efforts, while O.G. Anunoby played well on both ends to give the Knicks a 10-point lead. Outside of James, Los Angeles’ struggled to score the basketball which led to a 60-51 deficit at halftime.

Doncic opened the second half with another 3-pointer and James went right back to attacking the paint, though the Knicks weathered the storm well. Los Angeles’ inability to score from downtown came back to bite them as New York continued to execute and extend their lead.

Doncic and the bench group seemed to finally break through with a couple of good possessions, inching their way back into the game. However, New York responded with their own run and Los Angeles went into the final quarter trailing 84-76.

The physicality of the game was on full display as both teams didn’t shy away from contact, though this played more in favor of the Knicks. The Lakers played with enough effort and intensity to stay within striking distance, but could never seem to make that extra push.

The team made one last push midway through the quarter, culminating in a clutch three from James to tie the game at 96-96. After briefly taking the lead after a Gabe Vincent 3-pointer, Brunson answered with a 3-point play to it back up at 99-99. However, Josh Hart’s runner at the end of regulation was ruled no good, and the game went into overtime.

Doncic started the extra period with a bucket over Karl-Anthony Towns and followed it up with a deep 3-pointer to give the Lakers a five-point lead. However, Brunson answered with his own quick 4-0 run to make it a one-point game.

The game came down to the final few possessions, with Brunson tying the game at 107 apiece despite badly rolling his ankle. Fortunately, Los Angeles was able to knock down their free throws in the final minute and held on for the hard-earned victory.

JJ Redick Proud Of Lakers’ Ability To Play Hard Every Single Night

The Los Angeles Lakers faced a challenge they haven’t had to deal with on Thursday night against the New York Knicks. JJ Redick’s team trailed for the majority of the second half, but fought back and forced overtime, eventually coming away with a four-point win over one of the best teams in the league.

Redick recently spoke about how important it is for a team to just play hard every single night and how this Lakers team has really embraced that. And that is something that other coaches around the league have even mentioned to him recently.

“I think big picture, something that means a lot to me frankly and it’s a credit to the guys on our team,” Redick said. “A few coaches recently, whether it’s been postgame, pregame, after the game, whatever, had said ‘Man, your team plays really hard.’ Frankly, we’ve played some teams during this stretch here at home that have played really hard and really this winning streak started with Portland and that was a conversation Chauncey (Billups) and I had because his team plays hard.

“When you get to the playoffs, you have to play hard to have any sort of chance. I think our guys’ ability to continuously just reach down into the well and give whatever they’ve got on a given night, regardless of if the shots are going in or if there’s defensive mistakes, they just continue to stay the course with their effort. I think that says a lot about our group.”

Many teams can struggle to keep their energy and effort up when shots aren’t falling as it can be demoralizing when the offense just isn’t going. But the Lakers never let that happen against the Knicks and Redick believes it’s a good thing for them to see that they can still beat a good team when not playing at their best.

“It was funny, because in the fourth when I think it was like an eight-point game… Dalton hits that big 3 and it was momentum-changing and I felt like it was a callback to the Sacramento game, which I think, what was that, the second or third game of the season,” Redick recalled. “When we were down double digits at the end of the third and Dalton hits a 3 to get us going and Bron kind of takes over. We haven’t had many of those games because frankly, we’ve had the lead a lot lately.

“I think it’s a good reminder for our group going forward that we can win games like this where we’re not at our best offensively, where we get off to a slow start defensively, that we have enough toughness and grit to get these games.”

Not too long ago it seemed as if the Lakers had little room for error in order to win on any given night. But this team has truly embraced that identity of playing hard every single night and when combined with the skill on the roster led by Luka Doncic and LeBron James, it makes the Lakers very tough to beat even when things aren’t perfect.

JJ Redick happy with Lakers’ poise in win over Knicks

The Knicks did everything they could to keep the Lakers down late in Thursday night’s contest and every time the Lakers made a run, New York had an answer. But the Lakers never gave up and continued to fight, which JJ Redick believes was a sign of the team’s poise while down against a very good team.

“A night like tonight when it felt like a lot of things didn’t go our way and wasn’t easy, they often can come from your non-stars. I thought Jaxson’s [Hayes] defense in the second half and Gabe’s [Vincent] shot making was huge. Gabe doesn’t make those four threes, we’re not even in the game. I think for the group overall, once we reached their level of effort and how hard they were playing, we were right there, and we all felt that in the second half.

“Again, it goes back to the poise thing. [You] make a run, you get it to eight and they go back up to 10 or 11. Then you make a run, you get it to seven and it goes back up. Our guys just stayed the course and refused to give in and let go of the rope. It seemed like [Jalen] Brunson had an answer for everything, and he was fantastic tonight. Our guys, in what felt like a playoff game at times, really just gutted out a win.”

Lakers News: Quentin Grimes Defends Luka Doncic Amid Mavericks Criticism

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic is adjusting to his new team after being suddenly traded by the Dallas Mavericks. This felt like an impulsive decision made by Dallas despite health concerns regarding Doncic.

However, there is no denying that the five-time All-NBA guard is a top-five talent, regardless of any risks with conditioning or injuries. Notably, Doncic took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals less than a year ago.

When this deal broke, many questioned the reasoning behind general manager Nico Harrison opting to trade the franchise star. With that came harmful narratives regarding Doncic from his former team, leading to one of his Mavericks teammates Quentin Grimes to come to his defense in a recent interview with Jared Weiss of The Athletic:

Grimes took issue with the way Dončić has been portrayed on his way out the door from Dallas. Grimes dismissed the team’s concerns about Dončić’s conditioning and work habits, saying his former teammate was always in the gym whenever he would show up for his late-night shooting sessions or practice-day weightlifting.

“It’s just a narrative around him. Once a narrative gets thrown out there, everybody just runs with it,” Grimes said. “Whatever they’re saying, if he’s 270 (pounds) and he gets to the finals, let him be 270 then. It’s crazy.”

Grimes was traded by Dallas on the Feb. 8 trade deadline to the Philadelphia 76ers for Caleb Martin. To add insult to injury, the 24-year-old is playing great for the 76ers, recently putting up a career-high 44 points against the Golden State Warriors on March 1.

Ultimately, the Mavericks’ season is over with Kyrie Irving recently tearing his ACL and Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford remaining sidelined. Things turned sour for Doncic and Dallas, which will serve as motivation for the star to win a championship in L.A.

It is great to see a former teammate in Grimes have Doncic’s back through these harmful stories being told about the Slovenian guard. Now, everyone involved needs to move on and try to thrive in their new situations and circumstances.

Luka Doncic credits Lakers’ chemistry after comeback win against Knicks

For the Lakers to win eight straight games while trying to integrate Luka Doncic is a highly impressive feat. However, Thursday night featured adversity against the New York Knicks as L.A. trailed double digits for a majority of the game.

Thankfully, the purple and gold mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to keep their winning streak alive and Doncic credited the team’s chemistry in picking up that win.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy Shares Praise For Lakers’ Defense

A natural skepticism of Luka Doncic being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers was how their team defense would be impacted. Trading away an all-world defensive center in Anthony Davis and relying on Jaxson Hayes would warrant plausible concern.

However, head coach JJ Redick embraced that challenge and it is not to say that Doncic has played poor individual defense. He is averaging two steals since arriving in L.A., showing that he can read and play passing lanes.

After a recent matchup with the Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy credited them for playing smart defense, via The Young Man and The Three:

“Pretty good team, really good team. I think the biggest thing that stood out to me is them defensively. They play a really smart defense where they shut off driving lanes, they help off of guys and they try to funnel everything into the paint. But, also try to take away paint points. It’s really hard to explain, but they do a lot of peel switching. Where if one guy gets beat, there’s another guy there that takes the driver and they kick out to the 3-point line. It’s pretty good defense, I guess JJ [Redick] has done something good with defense for once in his life.”

The Lakers having the No. 1 ranked defense over the last few weeks comes as a shock given the losses of Davis and Max Christie. Hayes deserves credit for stepping up big time to fill that massive void and Murphy acknowledged his former teammate thriving in this new role:

“If you look at the numbers, Jaxson [Hayes] has been the number one defensive big since February 1. I think that’s where people had their worries, but they defend really well as team and then Jaxson, he’s tall, athlete, defends in space, he’s able to protect the rim. And then offensively, all he has to do is stand in dunker’s spot and Luka and LeBron are going to find him. It’s really not much that he has to do that he can’t do, like he’s able to do all those things at a high level. I think he’s filled that so called ‘void,’ that everybody thought was going to be present with the Lakers because he’s been able to do so.”

Redick has had to get creative with his schemes on both sides of the ball, but mainly defensively. It shows a high level of buy-in from his players to simply play hard on the defensive end and that has led to results.

Come postseason time, hopefully, these positive defensive trends will carry over when games kick up a notch.

JJ Redick had conversations with Rams’ Sean McVay before taking Lakers job

As a rookie head coach, JJ Redick stepped into a situation with serious expectations to win a championship before LeBron James retires. Leading up to getting the job, Redick shared that he held conversations with L.A. Rams Super Bowl coach Sean McVay to get some advice on coaching.

LeBron James Leaves Lakers’ Loss To Celtics Late With Groin Strain

The Los Angeles Lakers announced that superstar LeBron James suffered a groin strain late in Saturday night’s loss to the Boston Celtics. He was not able to return after suffering the injury in the final minutes of the 111-101 defeat.

In 35 minutes before suffering the injury, James had 22 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists on 11-of-23 shooting. He was the team’s only source of offense for much of the night with other guys struggling from the outside.

After the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick did not have an update on LeBron, although he understandably expressed some concern, via Dan Woike of the L.A. Times:

JJ says there is “obviously concern” with LeBron James’ groin injury, but that he doesn’t have any information.

— Dan Woike (@DanWoikeSports) March 9, 2025

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, James could miss weeks due to the injury:

It is too early to project an accurate timetable for how long LeBron James could miss because of his left groin injury, sources told ESPN. However one source said the initial thought is that it will sideline James for a matter of weeks, not a matter of days.

— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) March 9, 2025

James has dealt with some groin issues in the past, notably missing a few weeks with a strain in 2022 and an extended period in 2018-19.

While the 40-year-old has mostly been able to stay healthy this season, he is obviously no spring chicken so any time he gets hurt it is concerning and a reason to be cautious. If he is forced to miss significant time, then Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and the rest of the Lakers’ role players will need to step up in his absence.

James is an irreplaceable player on this team and in the NBA as a whole, so everyone will surely be holding their breathes until there is more clarity on the severity of the injury.

LeBron James believes Lakers’ offense should run though Luka Doncic

Before suffering the groin injury, LeBron James had been playing some of his best basketball of the season. One of the reasons for that was he was feeling fresher while playing off the ball more alongside Luka Doncic, which James thinks is how the Lakers’ offense should be run.

“In order for us to be the team, ultimately, we need to be, the ball needs to be in Luka’s hands. … I’m very comfortable playing off the ball,” LeBron recently said. “Finding my spots, running the floor, getting outlet passes from Luka. Being on the backside of the defense is either being blitzed and pick and rolls or switched in pick and rolls track so many eyes and bodies I’ve been very blessed to be able to be adaptable to whatever team I’ve been on throughout my career, to be able to change and this is another instance.”

If James misses time with the groin injury, obviously the ball will continue to be in Doncic’s hands.

Lakers Rumors: Initial Diagnosis On LeBron James Groin Injury

LeBron James continues to prove any doubters wrong as he’s putting up elite numbers in Year 22. James has been nothing short of fantastic the past couple of months as he’s helped put the Los Angeles Lakers squarely in the contender conversation.

Unfortunately, James’ torrid stretch of play came to an abrupt halt after he was forced to leave the Lakers’ primetime matchup against the Boston Celtics with a groin injury.

The injury was immediately concerning because of James’ history, but it appears he avoided disaster as the early expectation is he’ll miss one to two weeks, via Shams Charania of ESPN:

“Sources tell ESPN LeBron James is expected to miss at least one to two weeks with this strained groin. And typically with these soft tissue injuries at least a weeks long of absences and it could be a potentially extended period of time here for LeBron James when he has an evaluation here over the next 24 hours.

“But unlike in 2018 when LeBron James had that groin tear, I’m told he did not hear a pop last night in Boston. And unlike the last two years when the Lakers were competing for a Play-In Tournament slot, this time around they are in the third seed in the Western Conference. They do have a level of cushion, an ability here to have caution with LeBron James to be right for the stretch run and the playoffs. As of right now, we do have to keep in mind that he needs to play at least seven more games to be eligible for an All-NBA team,” Charania reported.

While a couple of weeks seems like the best-case scenario for James, these kinds of injuries are susceptible to happening again without proper rest and recovery. Given how careful the Lakers have been with LeBron over the years, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them hold him out even longer.

Los Angeles has done well to give themselves some breathing room in the standings, and seeding shouldn’t matter too much so long as they avoid the Play-In Tournament. However, the rest of the roster now needs to step up if it hopes to keep their standing relatively intact.

LeBron James stresses importance of every player on roster for Lakers’ success

LeBron James has been driving the Los Angeles Lakers’ recent success, but it isn’t just him contributing. In fact, James made sure to stress the importance of every player on the roster.

Lakers Injury Report: LeBron James & Dorian Finney-Smith Out, Luka Doncic & Jaxson Hayes Questionable Vs. Nets

The Los Angeles Lakers released their injury report for Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. LeBron James (left groin strain) and Dorian Finney-Smith (left ankle soreness) are out while Luka Doncic (back soreness) and Jaxson Hayes (right knee contusion) are questionable.

Additionally, Rui Hachimura (left patella tendinopahy) and Maxi Kleber (right foot surgery) remain out.

James hurt his groin late in the loss against the Boston Celtics and said there is not much concern with the injury. However, the expectation is he will miss one to two weeks as groin strains can be tricky to navigate.

Finney-Smtih is the other notable injury here as he will miss his return to Brooklyn and leave the Lakers even more shorthanded in the frontcourt.

Hachimura will miss his sixth-straight game due to his knee injury, and while the team has been able to get by with Jarred Vanderilt picking up the slack, the Japan native’s absence has been apparent, especially now with Finney-Smith also out. The offense has struggled at times without a credible floor spacer like Hachimura, so the team has relied more on James and Doncic to create shots for others.

The current expectation is Hachimura will miss at least one more week before being re-evaluated.

Hayes also missed the contest against the Celtics due to his knee injury, so the hope is he’s able to go against the Nets. Hayes has played well since being elevated to the starting center role, and his speed, athleticism and rolling to the rim was sorely missed against Boston.

Doncic looked like there may have been some issues moving fluidly on the court against the Celtics, which he explained was because of a nagging back issue. His status is up in the air, although he said he was feeling fine.

The injury bug appears to be hitting Los Angeles at the worst possible time as they are in the midst of a tight Western Conference playoff race and about to hit the hardest part of their schedule.

Head coach JJ Redick has done an excellent job of getting the Lakers to this point, but now the hard part will be trying to keep them afloat with so many rotation members out or banged up. While Brooklyn doesn’t pose as much of a threat as other teams, this is still a game Los Angeles could very well lose.

Jayson Tatum doesn’t think LeBron James gets talked about enough

What LeBron James is doing in Year 22 is unprecedented, though it seems like the focus is on anything but basketball regarding the Lakers. However, Jayson Tatum recognizes what James is doing on the hardwood and believes the Lakers star isn’t talked about enough.

LeBron James, Jaxson Hayes, Dorian Finney-Smith Out As Lakers Look To Bounce Back Vs. Nets

The Los Angeles Lakers were already thin up front following their trade for Luka Doncic. But now with the groin strain suffered by LeBron James, the Lakers will be without nearly their entire frontcourt rotation as they head to Brooklyn to face the Nets.

In addition to LeBron, Dorian Finney-Smith (left ankle soreness) and Jaxson Hayes (right knee contusion) have both been ruled out for Monday night’s contest while Rui Hachimura (left knee tendinopahy) also remains out. Austin Reaves says the rest of the Lakers will need to step up in LeBron’s absence and the team will need to go deep into their frontcourt rotation on this night.

Thankfully, Luka Doncic will be suiting up and the Lakers will need big nights from he and Reaves as they will have to carry this Lakers offense that is down so many important pieces. Doncic also noted the necessity of a ‘next man up’ mentality for this team and it will be interesting to see who JJ Redick turns to and who is able to step up and make a difference.

The activity, energy and attitude of Jarred Vanderbilt, Jordan Goodwin and Trey Jemison will be even more important as the Lakers will have to rely heavily on their defense and try to win ugly. They will also need the likes of Dalton Knecht and Gabe Vincent to give the offense a boost as Doncic and Reaves will only be able to do so much.

And the Lakers are facing a Nets team that has been feisty and competitive all season long and will be motivated to get a win as they have lost seven straight games, including the last four at home. Former Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell will surely be looking to have a big night against his former team while Cameron Johnson is also a quality two-way player.

A game like this will show what the Lakers are really made of as it will take the entire team coming together in all facets of the game to pull out a victory on the road.

Lakers News: JJ Redick Call Loss To Nets A ‘Low-Level Communication Game’

The Los Angeles Lakers got off on the wrong foot to start their road trip, losing to the Boston Celtics in primetime.

However, things went from bad to worse for the Lakers as they followed up the loss to the Celtics with one to a struggling Brooklyn Nets team. Los Angeles lost 111-108, a disappointing defeat that could come back to haunt them.

The Lakers were incredibly shorthanded as they were missing LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith and Jaxson Hayes, but they still had enough talent left to pull of a victory. Instead, it was a game they lost due to their own errors and head coach JJ Redick must find a way to turn things around.

Following the loss, Redick emphasized how poorly the team communicated as a whole, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“Just throw the ball to the guy. And then you play four-on-three. I think it was a very low-level communication game for our team.”

Redick also didn’t give his team a pass for being shorthanded, instead emphasizing the players’ needs to gamble and take shortcuts:

“I don’t think being shorthanded is an excuse for how we played basketball tonight… I think it was just an overall mentality to take shortcuts tonight, we just wanted to take shortcuts. They scored 20 points on us gambling. They had 16 offensive rebounds and we ball-watched all night. We said no dare shots, I don’t even wanna go through it, they probably made six or seven uncontested 3s. Just shortcuts. If you wanna be a good team and win in the NBA, you gotta do the hard stuff. We couldn’t even pass to each other. We couldn’t enter our offense running ball screens at literally halfcourt. Yeah, that’s gonna end up in a turnover. I don’t know what we’re doing… We just gotta be better, and we’ll use practice to clean things up and make sure everybody’s one of the same page.”

Redick doesn’t normally mince words after losses, and this time he sounded particularly irritated with how the game unfolded. Unfortunately for him and his staff, things don’t get any easier as they have a back-to-back set against the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets on Thursday and Friday, respectively. As Redick mentioned though, they will get in a much-needed practice beforehand.

LeBron James says Lakers can compete with anyone, but not at Celtics level yet

Without LeBron James, the Lakers looked sloppy on both ends of the floor. When healthy, the Lakers can beat anybody and while James is confident in his team he also acknowledged they’re not at the Boston Celtics’ level yet.

Lakers-Celtics Most Watched Non-Christmas NBA Regular Season Game In 7 Years

The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics met in primetime on Saturday night for one of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the season for any team. The Lakers had won eight games in a row, 12 games against teams above .500 and had a 20-4 record in their previous 24 games. The Celtics were 13-3 in their last 16, and it was the first time in decades that both teams matched up this late in the season with both teams in the top two in their conferences.

The game, in some ways, lived up to the hype. It was competitive the whole way through, especially in the first half, and saw great performances from the star players on both sides. However, LeBron James suffered a groin strain in the fourth quarter, allowing the Celtics to pull away in the final minutes.

Even with the somewhat deflated ending, it was still an incredible atmosphere, and the TV ratings prove it. The league announced on Tuesday morning that the Lakers-Celtics battle received ratings not seen in nearly a decade in the regular season:

Lakers-Celtics averaged 4.61 million viewers on NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC, making it the most-watched regular season game in seven years (excluding Christmas Day) and up 92% vs. the comparable window. The game peaked at 5.3 million viewers and was the most-watched program in… pic.twitter.com/Z5OWNGIOIS

The Lakers and Celtics have the best rivalry in the history of basketball and one of the best rivalries in all of sports. With both teams being as good as they are — with the star power that both teams have — it’s no surprise that a matchup between the two would do this well.

These two teams meeting in the NBA Finals this season is a legitimate possibility, and seeing a potential Finals preview in March with James, Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown is absolutely enough to get viewers to tune in.

LeBron James: Lakers not at Celtics level yet

After the loss to the Celtics, LeBron James spoke candidly about where he feels the Lakers are at in the scheme of the league right now, and it came with both positives and negatives.

He feels that the Lakers are capable of competing with anyone, and certainly could win a championship. However, he wouldn’t put the Lakers on the same level as the Celtics yet given that they are the reigning champions and the chemistry they have developed over the last few years.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Takes Accountability For Poor Performance Against Nets

Without LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers needed to rely heavily on Luka Doncic to carry them against the Brooklyn Nets as they looked to get back on track.

The Lakers entered the matchup incredibly shorthanded as they were also without Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith and Jaxson Hayes. Without four of their key rotation members, Los Angeles had no choice but to feed Doncic the basketball and let him go to work offensively.

However, Brooklyn anticipated the need to over utilize Doncic and they made his life difficult by throwing different defensive coverages at him. While Doncic can normally dissect any defense, he was uncharacteristically sloppy with the basketball and continued to struggle shooting from the field.

He finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists on a poor 8-of-26 shooting in the Lakers’ disappointing loss.

Doncic saw plenty of blitzes and he believes he and the team simply stopped executing how to beat them, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“Just should’ve made better decisions on that one. I think we started the game doing a really good job, good decisions, and then just went kind of out of it.”

Doncic also acknowledged that he feels like the Lakers missed an opportunity to win a game because the role players like Gabe Vincent, Jordan Goodwin and Dalton Knecht stepped up:

“Definitely. I think I should’ve helped more, but they all played great. And we gotta have the same mentality moving forward. Injuries are gonna happen and it’s just gotta be next man up mentality.”

Lakers head coach JJ Redick pointed to the Lakers’ lack of communication for their sloppy night, which Doncic took accountable for as he is usually better when facing blitzing defenses:

“I’m comfortable with it. You can see in the other games, today wasn’t a good example of me, but you could see in the other games, when they blitz we’re in great spots. And that’s what JJ said about communication today, that’s wasn’t on point. And that’s my fault and we should’ve been better.”

Doncic led the Lakers with five turnovers but was hardly the only one who didn’t play well in the loss to the Nets. But as the new focal point of the offense, he needs to be his usual self for the Lakers to be successful. While Doncic can certainly bounce back, the upcoming games against the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets will be tough hills to climb.

Lakers receive award at Sloan Analytics Conference for Luka Doncic trade

The Luka Doncic trade continues to garner attention for its shock and gravity in the NBA. The Lakers are fortunate to have Doncic fall into their laps, yet were still given an award at the Sloan Analytics Conference for the deal.

Lakers Rumors: LeBron James Returns To Los Angeles; Progressing Well From Injury

The Los Angeles Lakers have been bit by the injury bug lately, most notably LeBron James who suffered a left groin strain in the recent loss to the Boston Celtics.

James did not seem concerned when talking about the injury after the game and initial reports indicated he would miss a week or two. The Lakers will still be cautious though and make sure the 22nd-year star is 100% before returning.

Because of that, James has left the Lakers’ current road trip and returned to L.A. to continue his rehab, which is going well according to Shams Charania of ESPN:

Lakers' LeBron James has returned to Los Angeles, per medical recommendation, as he continues to progress well from a groin strain with the team finishing road trip Thursday in Milwaukee and Friday in Denver, league sources tell ESPN.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) March 12, 2025

It’s good to see that James is making progress and considering the Lakers’ road trip only has a couple of days left, it makes sense for him to return home where he can get better treatment.

The Lakers are currently in a rough stretch of their schedule in terms of both quantity and quality of games, so the hope is they will get James and other injured players back as soon as possible to avoid falling too far down the standings in a stacked Western Conference.

Rich Paul won’t put timetable on LeBron James’ injury

While LeBron James is progressing well and hopes to be back soon, his agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports will not put a timetable on the 40-year-old’s return to the Lakers lineup.

“I think you have to manage it,” Paul said. Obviously you see the reports that are out there and you have to pay attention to LeBron in terms of his postgame interview. He knows his body better than anybody. So we kind of have to follow him there. But look, he’s played a lot of basketball. All of these guys, coming off the Olympics, they’re playing across our league. So there’s been a lot of basketball played. For the older guys that have this type of injury, you have to manage it properly… I won’t put a timetable on it, I’ll let LeBron decide what’s to be done there. He has a great trainer and medical staff with the Lakers and Mike Mancias leads that for him. I’ll just be lockstep with those guys.”

Lakers News: Sotheby’s Auctioning First Game-Worn Kobe Bryant & Michael Jordan NBA Jerseys

Sotheby’s announced they will be auctioning game-worn jerseys from the NBA debuts of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Both of their first game-worn jerseys will be offered in standalone sales and are expected to fetch $20 million.

This presents an opportunity for collectors to buy pieces of NBA history, and these jerseys are going to be on display at Sotheby’s New York galleries beginning March 21.

With both of these players being regarded as two of the most dynamic scorers in league history, any memorabilia from them are considered timeless. Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectibles Brahm Wachter spoke to the magnitude of having these pieces up for sale.

“The historical weight of these two jerseys is difficult to overstate. They are as rare as they come,” Wachter said in a statement. “Early rookie jerseys represent the genesis of an athlete’s career. For collectors in search of true one-of-one treasures, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own iconic pieces of basketball history. Debut games are something every athlete experiences just once in their career journey, and is a moment where the hype of their pre-professional career finally comes to bear in the big leagues.”

Jordan’s jersey dates back to his preseason debut with the Bulls leading up to the 1984-1985 season. In addition to being worn, the iconic Chicago jersey is signed by the six-time NBA champion.

During his rookie season, Jordan averaged 28.2 points and easily won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Before his arrival, the Bulls were a team struggling financially and bringing in a talent of this caliber did not take long to show itself in the preseason.

On the other hand, Bryant’s jersey also comes from his rookie debut in the 1996-1997 preseason with the Lakers. However, it was also photo-matched to other moments, like his regular season debut and NBA Media Day.

It was not an ideal rookie season for the eventual five-time champion as he averaged 7.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists, but it became a starting point for the player he would become.

Both jerseys are expected to garner in the range of $10 million, which puts into perspective how legendary and impactful Bryant and Jordan were in their respective careers.

Bronny & LeBron James’ Lakers Opening Night jerseys sold for $102,000 in auction

A recent piece of history that went up for auction was Bronny and LeBron James’ Opening Night jerseys with the Lakers due to them being the first father-son duo to ever play on the same team. Sotheby’s also hosted this and their jerseys would ultimately sell for $102,000.

Recap: Luka Doncic’s Big Night Not Enough As Lakers Remain Winless On Road Trip With Loss To Bucks

After two tough losses to start their road trip, the Los Angeles Lakers looked to get back on track on Thursday night against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Lakers were still missing some key pieces in this one, and that proved costly as the Bucks used their size advantage to cruise to a 126-106 victory.

The game had a nice pace to start as both teams made three of their first four shots. The Bucks took an early lead though as Damian Lillard made his first triple to put them up 14-8.

While the Lakers’ shooting slowed down considerably, Luka Doncic kept them in it with his two-way play. The Lakers’ lack of size was an issue though as Brook Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo were doing whatever he wanted.

Doncic led the way with 16 points in the first quarter and Dalton Knecht finally gave him some help with five straight points to end it, cutting the Lakers’ deficit to 33-29.

Damian Lillard got going at the free throw line to start the second quarter, starting a 9-0 run for the Bucks to extend the lead to double digits.

Doncic ended the Lakers’ drought with a nice pass to Dorian Finney-Smith and then he scored 10 straight points of his own to quickly shrink the deficit. The Bucks did a nice job of answering that run with one of their own though, knocking down almost all of their open 3s.

Austin Reaves finally gave Doncic some help offensively to end the half, but the Lakers still went into the locker room trailing 71-63.

The Lakers’ lack of size continued to hurt them to start the third as Antetokounmpo continued to bully his way into the paint. Brook Lopez then made a pair of 3s as Milwaukee continued to grow its lead.

Doncic was the Lakers’ only real source of offense, which made for things starting to get ugly as the third quarter went on. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, L.A.’s deficit ballooned to 20 at 102-82.

The Lakers kept fighting trying to get back in it, and quickly cut their deficit to 16, forcing a Bucks timeout. L.A. was never able to make a real push though as Milwaukee cruised to the easy win.

Despite the loss, it was Doncic’s best game as a Laker. He finished with 45 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block on 14-of-27 shooting with basically all of that coming in the first three quarters.

What’s next for the Lakers

Things don’t get any easier for the Lakers moving forward as they finish up their road trip against the Denver Nuggets on the second night of a back-to-back on Friday.

Austin Reaves: Lakers Have To Weather Storm Through Injuries & Rough Part Of Schedule

The Los Angeles Lakers are in a rough part of their schedule as they have lost three straight games to kick off their road trip. Thursday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks was the start of a six-game in eight-night period, the most grueling portion of the schedule for any team this season.

To make matters worse, the Lakers are currently playing without their three frontcourt starters as LeBron James, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes all deal with injuries.

After the Bucks game, Austin Reaves discussed how big of a challenge that is for the Lakers being without some key guys, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“Yeah, I just think the room for error is very small with Bron, Jaxson and Rui out. Like you said, three starters that play a significant role for us. They do a lot for our team and I feel like the guys that have stepped up and got more minutes have played their ass off and done well, but we just gotta figure out a way to do more as a collective group. These are the times in the season that you’re tested and you gotta figure out a way to weather the storm. I have no doubt we’ll do that.”

Reaves knows that other teams have been through similar things though and the Lakers just need to fight through it and win some games:

“It’s just the nature of the league. I’m sure at some point, every team in the league goes through some type of adversity and has situations where they got a couple back-to-backs and not fully healthy and tank kind of running on empty. So it’s no different for us, we just gotta figure a way to like I said, weather the storm and win some games.”

Things don’t get any easier from here as the Lakers end their road trip against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, and they may be even more shorthanded in that one with it being the second night of a back-to-back.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves regaining rhythm offensively

The good news for Austin Reaves and the Lakers is despite the loss, he found a rhythm offensively in the second half and finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists on 10-of-17 shooting.

Reaves had struggled the last few games since coming back from his own injury, so he was pleased to start to see some shots go in:

“I just saw a couple shots go in and kind of got in a little rhythm. The last couple games I haven’t shot it well and it’s good to see the ball go in the basket. But we didn’t do what we were supposed to do today.”

If the Lakers are gonna get back in the win column then they will need Reaves at his best during this upcoming stretch.

Recap: Austin Reaves & Undermanned Lakers Come Up Short Against Nuggets

The Los Angeles Lakers have had a rough road trip as they have been hit by the injury bug at an inopportune time, leading to three straight losses.

They looked to salvage the trip against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, although they faced an extremely tall task as about half the roster was out with injuries, including Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith, Jaxson Hayes and Gabe Vincent. It was an unexpectedly close game though, but the Nuggets still came away with a 131-126 win to secure an 0-4 road trip for the Lakers.

With some many guys out, the Lakers leaned heavily on Austin Reaves and he scored the team’s first five points. Jarred Vanderbilt then hit a corner 3-pointer as the Lakers jumped out to a quick 8-2 start.

Aaron Gordon and Nikola Jokic attacked the paint to settle in the Nuggets, but Dalton Knecht also got going offensively with seven straight points to keep his team in front.

The Lakers were playing with good energy early and even Bronny James contributed to that when getting some rotation minutes. He, Shake Milton and Reaves all connected from deep as the Lakers led 40-32 at the end of the first quarter.

With a bench unit in to start the second, the Lakers’ offense predictably struggled and the Nuggets quickly tied the game with Russell Westbrook giving his team a boost.

The Lakers’ centers got in foul trouble so the Nuggets were attacking the paint and getting to the free throw line at will to take their first lead. In fact, they stretched that lead to 10 before a brilliant stretch by Reaves to end the half, cutting L.A.’s deficit to 71-67.

Denver came out strong to begin the second half, going on a 12-4 run to force a quick Lakers timeout. L.A. could have easily packed it in right there but to their credit, they kept fighting with Reaves, Knecht and Milton leading the way offensively and Vanderbilt defensively. After a strong close to the third quarter, the Lakers were in striking distance with their deficit at 102-99.

The Lakers scored the first four points of the first quarter and all of a sudden they regained the lead. Combined with the end of the third quarter, it was a 17-4 run for L.A.

They weren’t done there though as Reaves and Markieff Morris both connected from deep to stretch the leas to six. Once the Nuggets started to lock in defensively though they ran off six straight points to tie it up heading into the final stretch.

Despite being quiet for most of the night, Jamal Murray heated up late to lead a quick 5-0 run. Knecht and Jordan Goodwin responded with triples though as this thing went down to the wire.

Again is was Reaves coming up big for his team with back-to-back steals and a bucket and an assist to Knecht to take a three-point lead in the final minute.

Of course Jokic immediately responded with a three-point play. Then after a miss by Reaves, Murray got a wide open look at a 3 and of course he drilled it.

The Lakers have one final chance with five seconds to play, but they threw the ball away and suffered the loss.

What’s next for the Lakers

JJ Redick: Lakers Coaching Staff Fought To Get Jordan Goodwin Two-Way Contract

The Los Angeles Lakers’ scouting department has become well-regarded for their ability to find diamonds in the rough and it appears they may have hit again after seeing how effective Jordan Goodwin has been.

The Lakers signed Goodwin to a two-way contract earlier during the 2024-25 season and the guard has made the most of his opportunities since joining the parent team. Originally getting his start within the organization with the South Bay Lakers, Goodwin showed enough at that level to warrant a call up to the Lakers.

Since then, he’s taken off running as he’s become an integral part of head coach JJ Redick’s rotation. Between his rugged defense, scrappiness and willingness to shoot the 3-pointer, Goodwin was a big part of the team’s success prior to their injuries.

Redick has been highly effusive of the guard and revealed he and the coaching staff knew he’d be a good player back in September when they fought for him to get a two-way deal, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“Yeah. September, I don’t know the exact date he joined our preseason gym, but it would’ve happened sooner had he not hurt his hamstring. The coaching staff was all fighting for him.”

From Redick’s comments, it’s clear the team had their eyes on Goodwin for a bit but didn’t get a chance to see what he could while he was sidelined with injury. Now healthy, though, Goodwin’s fit the ethos and playstyle that Redick has preached throughout the course of the regular season.

Not only has Goodwin been a luxury on the floor for the Lakers, but his salary also gives them much more flexibility heading into the offseason. He can be elevated from a two-way contract to a standard NBA deal at any point, and it seems like a lock that that’ll happen before the playoffs begin.

Between LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, there’s enough scoring and playmaking to uplift the offense, so players like Goodwin can simply focus on the defensive side of the floor. However, Goodwin has also shown some solid stretches of scoring and outside shotmaking which also provides immense value.

Overall, Goodwin is the kind of find that can help increase a team’s title hopes and it’ll be exciting to see how much more he can develop in the next month.

Jordan Goodwin says Lakers brought him in for defense

Jordan Goodwin has endeared himself to the Lakers and its fanbase because of his physical play style and he acknowledged the team brought him in for his defense.

Lakers Video: LeBron James Celebrates Son Bryce & Sierra Canyon Winning State Title

LeBron James is currently dealing with a groin injury and as a result, the Los Angeles Lakers star left the team’s road trip early to get home and get some treatment in hopes of returning as quickly as possible.

The Lakers finished up their road trip with a close loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night despite being in the second game of a back-to-back and missing six key rotation players. The Lakers got contributions from players who don’t usually get many opportunities, including James’ oldest son Bronny who had five points in 15 minutes.

Even though LeBron wasn’t playing, he got a chance to watch his son up close. That son wasn’t Bronny though, rather his youngest Bryce, who is a senior at Sierra Canyon.

LeBron made the trip up to Sacramento on Friday night to watch Sierra Canyon against Stockton Lincoln in the state Division I championship game at Golden 1 Center. With LeBron in attendance, there was one of the largest crowds at the state final in years at 8,396 people.

They got to watch Bryce and Sierra Canyon pull through with a 58-53 victory, and afterwards LeBron celebrated the accomplishment with his son and his teammates:

Bryce only had three points in the win, but he is headed to Arizona next season after recently committing to the Wildcats. Who knows, maybe LeBron will get the chance to play with Bryce in the NBA as well if he makes it at least two more seasons after this one.

LeBron James considered day-to-day moving forward

Even though he sat out against the Nuggets, it appears LeBron James is close to returning to the Lakers lineup as JJ Redick recently said he considers him to be day-to-day.

Judging by the way LeBron was celebrating Bryce’s big win, it doesn’t look like his groin injury is bothering him too much.
