News Lakers Team Notes

Lakers Rumors: Eric Dixon, RJ Davis, Arthur Kaluma & Augustas Marčiulionis Sign Exhibit 10 Contract

The Los Angeles Lakers announced they have signed Eric Dixon, RJ Davis, Arthur Kaluma and Augustas Marčiulionis. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but they are presumably Exhibit 10 contracts.

That would allow the Lakers to have those players on their roster for training camp and then easily convert them to their South Bay roster in the G League if they don’t make the parent team or land a two-way contract.

The Lakers have put an added emphasis on player development in recent years, looking to find gems to supplement their roster with some cheaper talent given the restraints of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement. The main way to do that is with two-way contracts, and the Lakers already added two players this offseason in Christian Koloko and Chris Mańon.

Teams are allowed to give out three two-way contracts, which means the Lakers have one more available after choosing to part ways with Trey Jemison III.

Considering the Lakers have not yet given out their third two-way deal, it’s reasonable to expect them to keep it open until training camp. That would allow Dixon, Davis, Kaluma and Marčiulionis to compete for it in the preseason.

It was originally reported after the 2025 NBA Draft that Dixon had signed a two-way deal with the Lakers to occupy that spot. He was dealing with some sort of leg injury, however, which kept him out of Summer League. Reports later surfaced that Dixon never officially put pen to paper on his two-way contract.

Since he had already agreed to that deal though, he is likely the favorite to get the third two-way spot if he has a strong training camp and can prove that he is healthy.

In five seasons with Villanova, Dixon averaged 14.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 27.5 minutes. His final season was his best as he was named to the All-Big East First Team in 2024-25 and led the NCAA with 23.3 points per game. He shot 45.1% from the field and 40.7% from 3-point range with 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Davis, a point guard who joined the Lakers for Summer League, had a strong five-year collegiate career with at North Carolina. In his final season with the Tar Heels, he started all 37 games and averaged 17.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.0 steals in 34.2 minutes, earning All-ACC Second Team honors. He also was the 2024 ACC Player of the Year and claimed the 2024 Jerry West Award, presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate shooting guard. In 175 career games (155 starts) at UNC, Davis averaged 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.4 minutes.

Kaluma also played for the Lakers in Summer League, averaging 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 12.3 minutes across four appearances between San Francisco and Las Vegas. He played four collegiate seasons, finishing up at Texas where he put up 12.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 29.3 minutes this past year.

Similar to Dixon, Marčiulionis joined the Lakers for Summer League but was not able to suit up due to injury. He played four seasons at St. Mary’s and was named the 2025 WCC Player of the Year and earned All-WCC First Team honors. In 138 career games (91 starts), he averaged 8.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 24.7 minutes.

Deandre Ayton was Lakers’ top center target

The Lakers’ biggest move of the offseason was bringing in Deandre Ayton to be their starting center and recent reports indicate he became their top target immediately after hitting the open market.

Dodgers’ Andrew Friedman: Mark Walter ‘Wants To Win So Badly’ For Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves through the NBA last month when reports emerged that the Buss family was selling its majority stake in the franchise to Mark Walter.

Walter already has ties to the city as he is also the majority owner of the L.A. Dodgers and Sparks.

Walter has been the principal owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2012 under the Guggenheim Baseball Management umbrella. Since purchasing the franchise, L.A. has made 12 consecutive postseason appearances, winning the World Series twice.

During an interview with Kyle Kraska of Fox 11, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman discussed what Walter is going to bring to the Lakers and noted his desire to win multiple NBA championships:

“I think the Laker fans had a great run. The Buss family has done an unbelievable job with the Lakers. Anytime a change of control is happening, there’s a risk of where that’s going because the Buss family has been such great stewards of the Lakers. But the good news is for Laker fans, they can rest assured that it is going to a guy that is incredibly competitive, wants to win so badly and he feels so much pressure to the fans, and appreciates that partnership between the fans and organization, and what that means. He is constantly putting pressure on us to do whatever we can to win. So I think when that is the North Star of an owner, and hire good people around, I think really good things happen.”

Walter is one of the most well-liked owners in all of sports, largely due to his commitment to fielding the best possible team and giving back to the community.

With Walter now overseeing the Lakers and Dodgers, there is expected to be increased synergy between the two franchises.

Jeanie Buss will continue serving as Governor of the Lakers for the foreseeable future. However, Walter can still positively impact the team in other ways, especially off the court, by infusing money into various departments of the franchise.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explains why Mark Walter is good for Lakers

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is well aware of the positive effects Walter can have on a team and thinks he will do great things with the Lakers.

“I think he does everything he can to provide resources and support,” Roberts said of Walter. “He wants to win and he feels the fans, the city, deserve that.

“That’s never lost and he’s always challenging us on how we can become better and not complacent or stagnant, to continue to stay current with the market of competition. To win not only now, but for as far as we can see out.”

Lakers News: Luka Doncic To Appear In L.A. On Aug. 3 As Part Of Jordan Brand Tour

This offseason has been a busy one for Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic as he has not only been focused on transforming his body to get into peak shape, but he also has been recruiting players such as Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to come play with him.

Doncic’s most important business of the offseason is still ahead of him though as he becomes eligible for a contract extension on Aug. 2 and all signs point to him signing it. Luka is also set to play for Slovenia in this summer’s EuroBasket tournament.

Before he reports to his native country for that on Aug. 4 though, Doncic is back in the United States for a Jordan Brand promotional tour. He took to social media to announce that he will be visiting New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles as part of that tour:

NYC. Chicago. LA. See you soon. pic.twitter.com/QlUIATzrYf

— Luka Doncic (@luka7doncic) July 27, 2025

The L.A. date is notable for a couple of reasons. First, it will be his first time returning to his now home city since being eliminated from the postseason in May. But more importantly, Aug. 3 is one day after Doncic is eligible for his contract extension, so it reasonable to expect him to put pen to paper on his new deal over the weekend before making an appearance at the Jordan Brand one-on-one tournament.

Given all of the recent reports that are out there and how active Doncic has been as a recruiter this offseason, it would be an absolute shock if he did not sign the extension with the Lakers before heading back overseas for EuroBasket.

Luka Doncic already agreed to four-year extension with Lakers?

The Lakers have made it clear that they will offer Luka Doncic whatever contract extension he would like to stay with the team. Many presumed Doncic would sign a three-year deal, which would get him to 10 years in the NBA, allowing him to sign for even more money.

Recent reports indicate that Doncic has already agreed to a full four-year, maximum extension worth up to $217 million though, which would be a huge win for the Lakers organization.

L.A. traded for Luka with no reassurances that he would stay long-term, so their main focus has been trying to make him feel at home so he is willing to put pen to paper when he is first eligible in August, which it looks like he will do.

2024-25 Los Angeles Lakers Player Review: Alex Len

The Los Angeles Lakers trading for superstar guard Luka Doncic was a move that completely changed the trajectory of the franchise for the long-term. In the immediate aftermath, it also left the team extremely thin at center as they dealt away Anthony Davis and rescinded a follow-up trade for Mark Williams. With the team in need of a bit more bulk in the middle, the Lakers would sign veteran big man Alex Len who was waived following a trade to the Washington Wizards.

The hope was that Jaxson Hayes would be the athletic rim-runner while Len would provide the physicality necessary to bang down low with some of those true bigs the Lakers would face. Len has been in the league since 2013 and the Lakers felt he was the best option at that point in helping to round out the center position.

Len did get a couple of opportunities to show what he could bring to the Lakers when he first joined the team and had a couple of decent showings. However, as time went on, Len found himself on the outside of head coach JJ Redick’s rotation as he leaned towards a small-ball lineup when push came to shove.

Even as the Lakers struggled down low in the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Len still could not find his way on the court for meaningful minutes and he ultimately found himself watching from the sidelines.

2024-25 Highlight

Len appeared in just 10 regular season games for the Lakers, but he did manage to have a couple of decent performances.

His debut with the Lakers was one of his best as he finished with four points, seven rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes. However, his best outing came in March as the short-handed Lakers hosted the Milwaukee Bucks. Len nearly posted a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while even knocking down a 3-pointer, one of just two he made all season.

2025-26 Outlook

As it currently stands, Alex Len remains a free agent and while he has yet to sign anywhere just yet, he should wind up somewhere on a training camp roster as you just can’t teach his size and he has shown that he can be a decent big in a small role.

And even if he doesn’t find a home in the NBA for the 2026 season, his Ukranian roots would make him an obvious candidate to find a spot with an overseas powerhouse with the opportunity to return to the league always there.

Lakers Rumors: Luka Doncic Emphasizing Desire To Win Now

This is a massive week for Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers. While all the media attention has been on a Jordan Brand promotional tour for Doncic, on Saturday, he becomes eligible to sign a maximum contract extension for up to four years to tie himself to the Lakers for the foreseeable future.

All rumors have indicated that Doncic will be signing that extension, but there remains some hesitation as to how many years he’ll sign for. He can sign a four-year deal worth up to $223 million, but could also sign a shorter contract in the hopes of either lining up his next free agency with other stars, or with the 10-year veteran mark which would allow for an even more lucrative fourth contract.

But regardless of what extension Luka ultimately ends up signing — if he signs at all — he is not going to be complacent with the Lakers regarding the moves they make. He still wants the focus to be contending for a championship each and every year, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN:

“This isn’t signing away to the Lakers and saying, ‘OK, you have my commitment and I’ll have some patience here.’ It’s ‘I want to win this year, I want to win the subsequent year. So long as my name is signed to a piece of paper saying I am a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, I expect to be in a position to raise banners at the Crypto.com Arena.’”

The Lakers have built their entire offseason plan around patience and the idea that by maintaining future flexibility, they can build a true contender in the next year or two. However, that clearly didn’t stop Doncic from trying to make things happen.

He reportedly recruited Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton into the mix, giving the Lakers an arguably improved team from the one that finished with the No. 3 seed in the West last year. But it remains to be seen if the Lakers are genuine contenders.

Regardless, even if Luka signs that extension the first minute he can, the Lakers are still on the clock to make something happen.

Luka Doncic inspired by Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan in offseason body transformation

After the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs, Luka Doncic immediately began doing two-a-day workouts to get into better shape.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick challenged his team to improve their physique this offseason, and Doncic has made that a top priority as he enters his first full year in L.A.

The early results have been stunning as Luka appears to be in the best shape of his life, which is a scary proposition for the rest of the league.

Doncic said he has tried to emulate two of the greatest NBA players of all-time in Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant with his training regimen.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Was Motivated By Playoff Loss To Timberwolves

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic looks and sounds like a man on a mission as recent photos of his new physique sent the basketball world in a frenzy.

Doncic is currently on a tour to promote Jordan Brand, giving fans a first-hand look at all the hard work he’s done on and off the floor to completely transform his body. He has heard all the noise and chatter about how he was out of shape last season, but the Lakers star certainly did his part to quiet those voices.

Now, Doncic heads into arguably the most important season of his career as the NBA will eagerly be waiting to see what he can do on the floor now that he’s in the best shape of his life. Not only did Doncic have to endure a shocking midseason trade, he and the Lakers were unceremoniously eliminated in the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves in just five games.

The Slovenian star wasn’t his best against Minnesota and immediately made the call to his team to get started on his offseason training after feeling motivation from the loss, via Andrew Heffernan and Ebenezer Samuel of Men’s Health:

Then came the 4-1 playoff series decimation at the hands of the Timberwolves. One day after that loss, Dončić texted Seager to start his offseason training program ASAP. “So every summer I try my best to work on different things,” he says. “Obviously, I’m very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.”

Doncic was hounded by a plethora of Timberwolves defenders who guarded him full court and made sure he had to work for all of his shots. By the end of games, he was visibly exhausted while the younger and more athletic Minnesota players took advantage.

By all accounts, the Lakers will go as far as Doncic can take them next season but the early signs are encouraging to say the least. Doncic has the upside to be the best player in the league and this upcoming year would be the best time to remind the NBA that he’s can be even better than he already is.

Luka Doncic emphasizes need to continue taking care of body

Lakers News: Draymond Green Believes Trade From Mavericks Created Hunger Within Luka Doncic

The trade of superstar guard Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers was truly one of the most shocking deals in the history of sports. It completely changed the trajectory of the Lakers as they now have their face of the franchise for the next decade.

While Doncic struggled initially with the trade, having wanted to spend his entire career with the Mavericks, he has since embraced life with the Lakers and is expected to sign a long-term extension with the team once he is eligible. He also underwent a complete body transformation this offseason and has lost a significant amount of weight as he prepares for the upcoming season.

This new, skinnier version of Luka has caught the eye of many, including Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, who took to social media saying he believes the trade from Dallas has unlocked the hunger within the Lakers’ superstar that hasn’t been seen since his rookie year:

“Luka is looking like rookie Luka all over again. The Trade has created that hunger again it seems!”

What Green is speculating undoubtedly mirrors the thoughts that many have regarding Doncic’s dedication to getting his body right this summer. Even though it has been reported that this was in the works even before the trade that sent him to the Lakers, it won’t stop many from believing that the shocking deal gave Luka even more motivation, especially as the Mavericks questioned his weight and conditioning in the aftermath.

Coming back the next season in the best shape of his career and leading the Lakers to success the Mavericks can’t match would be the ultimate revenge for Doncic and many feel that is what is driving him. Green is not alone in that assessment even if there are reports to the contrary.

Ultimately, no one knows what’s in Luka’s head except for himself and regardless of the reasoning, he looks amazing and is in excellent shape heading into his first full season with the Lakers. So Green and his Warriors, and the rest of the league, should be prepared to see the best version of Doncic yet.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson credits Luka Doncic for transforming his body

Someone else impressed with the transformation Luka Doncic has made this offseason is Lakers legend Magic Johnson. The all-time great expressed joy at seeing the new-look Doncic and believes he is setting the tone for his Lakers teammates about being in the best shape possible going into this season with eyes on an NBA Championship.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Believes Thunder Deserved 2025 NBA Championship

Luka Doncic has done everything this offseason to position himself and the Los Angeles Lakers to compete for a title as soon as the 2025-26 season.

Doncic’s body transformation is a sight to behold as the Lakers star is visibly thinner with more muscle definition. He clearly heard all the criticism about his weight and diet and now looks like a man on a mission as he looks forward to his first full season in Los Angeles.

After losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs, Doncic and the rest of the Lakers were forced to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder advance to the 2025 NBA Finals when they beat the Indiana Pacers in a thrilling seven-game series. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped off his historic season by winning Finals MVP and establishing the Thunder as the league’s next potential dynasty.

Over a month later, Doncic said Oklahoma City deserved to win and warned that the Western Conference has several teams who can win it all next year, via YES Network:

“Honestly, I think they deserved it. They had great players and they really played really well. I think the West is so stacked right now, we have so many teams and you never know what to expect.”

Doncic knows when credit is due and the Thunder did everything right on the way to the franchise’s first championship. While Gilgeous-Alexander was the constant source of offense Oklahoma City needed, their stifling defense at every level of the floor is what really set them apart.

The Thunder seem poised to rule the Western Conference for years to come because of their collective talent, youth and endless draft capital they can use to replenish their roster. Teams like the Lakers might have their best chance to win this upcoming season before Oklahoma City’s star trio hits its peak, so Doncic getting in shape was a massive boost to their chances.

At his best, Doncic has a case as the best player in the world and he’ll need to be close to that level of superstar if the purple and gold hope to compete with the Thunder and the rest of the projected title contenders.

Luka Doncic avoids talking about contract extension

The most important thing the Lakers need to do is secure a contract extension with Luka Doncic, though all signs are pointing to the two committing long-term. Doncic was recently asked about his upcoming contract, and declined to comment due to NBA rules.

Lakers News: Mavericks CEO Rick Welts Has No Regrets About Trading Luka Doncic

The backlash that came to the Dallas Mavericks after trading superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was quick and very loud. The franchise was blasted by both the media and fans not only for the decision to deal their franchise player, but also the return they got back as well as their reasonings in wanting to move on.

In the aftermath of everything that went down, including Doncic’s offseason body transformation that answers the questions about whether he could get himself in elite shape, some might wonder whether there are some regrets within the Mavericks organization. But CEO Rick Welts isn’t feeling that.

In an interview on Bloomberg TV, Welts said that he has no regrets on the decision to deal Doncic to the Lakers and wishes him all the best in L.A. but also hopes to beat the Lakers every time they play:

“You can’t have fear or regrets in this business. It’s all about how you move forward so it doesn’t really serve a purpose to have regrets. What I will say, I learned about the depth of the connection between Mavericks fans and this team and that to me is half glass full because I knew we could restore that over time. I didn’t think it would happen quite as quickly perhaps as its happened. I would also say I’m incredibly proud of how the organization presented itself for Luka’s first game back at American Airlines Center when he was a Los Angeles Laker. I think if you watch that game, it was an opportunity for fans to say thank you. You saw the emotion on Luka’s face, you saw the way that night unfolded in tributes to Luka. I think he’ll always be such a big part of the history here. And we wish him nothing but good luck, but we also hope we beat his team every time we play them going forward.”

Welts makes a decent point in that what’s done is done and it serves no purpose in harping on the past. It is also true that the Mavericks drafting Cooper Flagg has helped to reinvigorate the franchise and help bring some fan support back. But make no mistake, there is still some resentment from fans about dealing Doncic to the Lakers and seeing him in the best shape of his life ready to lead the Lakers to success has to sting some.

He may hope to beat the Lakers every time they play the Mavericks, but if Luka brings a championship to L.A. before Dallas can hoist another trophy, that regret may start to kick in and fans will undoubtedly come down on him once again.

Luka Doncic’s offseason transformation was planned before trade to Lakers

While many assume that being dealt to the Lakers played a role in inspiring Luka Doncic to get in the best shape of his life this offseason, this commitment was reportedly in the works before the trade ever took place.

Heritage Auctioning Kobe Bryant & Michael Jordan Trading Card, Lakers Lockers & More

Heritage Auction will feature a 1-of-1 basketball card featuring signatures from Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan during their upcoming Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction on Aug. 23 and 24.

This is the first time the card will be available for public auction and has a chance to be the best-selling card ever.

“The demand for this card is astronomical, which makes sense, because it has everything, including photos, jersey patches and signatures from two of the greatest players who ever stepped on the court,” says Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions. “The Dual Logoman card offered in this auction is the only example created that includes only Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant — making it the most sought-after example of the incredible Upper Deck Logoman series, and because of Kobe Bryant’s tragic death in 2020, it always will be the only one.

Aside from the rare card with Bryant and Jordan, the auction will also include items like Lakers lockers used between the 2018-19 and 2024-25 seasons. The lockers were used by the likes of LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Bronny James and Dalton Knecht.

“The quality of items in this auction, for collectors of all eras of all sports, is astounding, and further cements Heritage Auctions as the premier sports collectibles platform in the world,” says Ivy. “From the must-have pillars of elite collections from icons like Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan and Mickey Mantle to the once-in-a-lifetime choices like the section of the Bulls’ court to the Lakers’ lockers, this auction is shaping up to be one of the best ever held.”

Any time Lakers-related items go on auction, they fare well and the card of Bryant and Jordan will surely demand a high price. Meanwhile, the lockers are great memorabilia items that won’t demand as high of a price as some of the other available materials.

Bryant and Jordan are heralded as two of the greatest players of all time and each has a strong case in the GOAT debate. The two will forever be intertwined because of their play styles and relationship, and the lucky winner of the auction will get to hold arguably the most valuable card ever.

Luka Doncic inspired by Kobe Bryant & Michael Jordan

In today’s NBA, not many players resemble Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan more than Luka Doncic. Like the two legends, Doncic has a killer instinct on the court. He has committed himself to transforming his body this offseason and said he uses both Bryant and Jordan as motivation in his training.

Luka Doncic Signs Contract Extension With Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers announced that they have signed superstar Luka Doncic to a long-term contract extension. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is reportedly to be a three-year max deal with a player option in the final year.

“Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Dončić’s future is with the Los Angeles Lakers,” said Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka. “Luka is one of the game’s most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare. From the moment Luka became a Laker, there was an immediate connection and admiration between Luka and our fanbase. You can feel it in your spirit when you attend a Lakers game. Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community. Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”

After acquiring Doncic in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks last February, the Lakers pegged the Slovenian star as the player they want to build around for years to come. Now that he has put pen to paper on the extension, they can breathe a sigh of relief knowing he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

This is a well-deserved extension for Doncic, who lost out on a supermax extension when he was traded. Now, he will recoup a lot of that money with a chance to hit the open market once he reaches 10 years in the NBA, which will allow him to earn an even bigger deal.

In his first seven seasons, Doncic has put together a resume that matches up with an all-time great in the NBA. He has been named an All-Star five times while making five First Team All-NBA squads. He is also a former Rookie of the Year, Western Conference Finals MVP and 2023-24 scoring champion.

In 450 career regular season games between the Lakers and Mavericks, Doncic has averaged 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists while shooting 46.8% from the field.

At this point, Doncic is focused on winning championships with the purple and gold, which is exactly what the franchise envisioned when they made the trade. It remains to be seen how quickly they will be able to do that, but with Doncic leading the way they should be in the mix every year.

Luka Doncic was motivated by Lakers’ playoff loss

The Lakers have to feel good about giving Luka Doncic this extension considering he completely transformed his body this offseason and is in the best shape of his life. He started training right after the Lakers’ season came to an end, taking motivation from the unfortunate first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“So every summer I try my best to work on different things,” he says. “Obviously, I’m very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.”

With a motivated Doncic and improved roster, the Lakers are looking to do some damage this upcoming season in what will be a loaded Western Conference.

Lakers Rumors: LeBron James FaceTimed Luka Doncic To Congratulate Him On Extension

Saturday was a great day for the Los Angeles Lakers as they were able to ink superstar Luka Doncic to a three-year contract extension.

At the press conference, Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka called it a monumental moment for the organization, which is reason to celebrate. They now have a 26-year-old global star that is locked down for his prime years.

Some of Doncic’s teammates were in attendance at the press conference, including Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber and Adou Thiero. Then, they all hopped on a plane to Las Vegas with Pelinka, Jeanie Buss, Mark Walter, Kurt Rambis and JJ Redick, celebrating Doncic’s new deal by attending a Backstreet Boys concert at The Sphere.

One teammate that was notably absent was LeBron James, which of course led to a lot of speculation online give the 40-year-old’s uncertain future in the Lakers organization.

There doesn’t appear to be a notable meaning behind James’ absence, however, as NBA insider Marc Stein is reporting that he FaceTimed Doncic on Saturday morning to congratulate him on the contract extension:

LeBron and son Bronny James were noticeably not in attendance at the news conference, but I’m told that LeBron FaceTimed Dončić on Saturday morning to congratulate him on the new deal.

Even though the Lakers are pivoting from building around James to building around Doncic, the two superstars have always shared a mutual respect.

While LeBron may have not been there in person to celebrate Luka’s extension, it’s nice to see him reach out behind the scenes to congratulate his co-star on his new deal. If the Lakers are gonna make any noise this season in a loaded Western Conference then they will need Doncic and James to be on the same page leading the team, and there have been no signs to this point that won’t be the case.

Luka Doncic has ‘utmost respect’ for LeBron James

Before signing his extension with the Lakers, Luka Doncic let it be known that he has respect for LeBron James and has enjoyed playing with him.

“Luka loves playing with LeBron and has learned so much from him. He has nothing but the utmost respect for LeBron and considers it an honor to be his teammate,” a recent report indicated.

Doncic grew up idolizing James as they have a similar play style, so now getting to team up with him on the Lakers must be a cool feeling.

Saturday was a historic day for the Los Angeles Lakers as they were able to get superstar Luka Doncic to agree to a three-year extension.

The Lakers traded for Doncic last February with no reassurances that he wanted to be there or stay long-term, so getting him to sign that extension was their primary goal. Now, Rob Pelinka and the front office can focus on building around Luka for years to come now that they know he is signed through at least 2028.

Before the work begins though, the Lakers got a chance to celebrate Doncic’s new contract extension. They held a press conference at the team’s practice facility on Saturday morning with Pelinka, JJ Redick, Jeanie Buss, Mark Walter and a handful of players in attendance. Those players included Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes and Adou Thiero.

Then, they all hopped on a plane to Las Vegas to see the Backstreet Boys at The Sphere:

Doncic has previously called the Backstreet Boys one of his favorite bands. He mentioned at the press conference that the celebration after was a surprise, so this was a good idea by the Lakers. It was also cool to see so many of Luka’s teammates there with him, celebrating what should be the start of a long and fruitful partnership.

Doncic and the Lakers got the chance to meet the Backstreet boys at the concert and then were in a suite to enjoy it.

It wasn’t just teammates that attended as Pelinka is seen enjoying the show as well. Buss and Redick were also there, as was Walter, who is set to take over ownership of the team at some point later this year. All in all, it was a fun bonding experience for everyone in the organization to celebrate Doncic’s new deal.

Luka Doncic expects Lakers to be in contention every year

Before Luka Doncic signed this new contract with the Lakers, he made it clear to the organization that he expects the team to be in championship contention every year he is with the team. That should put some pressure on the front office to keep improving sooner rather than later.

Full Lakers 2025 Preseason Schedule

The Los Angeles Lakers have already announced their 2025 home preseason games. Now, the team’s entire preseason schedule is official.

The Lakers will play six preseason games in total and, as usual, will take place in a handful of different areas around the West coast.

The preseason kicks off in at the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert when they host the Phoenix Suns on Oct. 3. Just two days later, the Lakers hit the road to take on the Golden State Warriors at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The Lakers will then get a week off before facing the Warriors again on Oct. 12, this time on their home court at the Crypto.com Arena.

That Warriors game kicks off a four-game in six-day stretch to end the preseason as the Lakers will head to Phoenix to take on the Suns on Oct. 14 before immediately heading to Las Vegas for a contest against the Dallas Mavericks in a back-to-back on Oct. 15. The Lakers will then finish the preseason at home against the Sacramento Kings on Oct. 17.

The good news is that the Lakers are staying on the West Coast this preseason, as many will recall the extremely random trip to Milwaukee last year that no one in the franchise was happy about. This year, they’ll remain close to home for the entirety of the preseason.

The preseason will be a good opportunity to get a look at the Lakers’ younger players and see how much they’ve progressed. There likely won’t be much of the likes of Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James aside from one game in which JJ Redick will play his regulars for around three quarters. The same goes can be said for other potential starters such as Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton.

However, it will provide an opportunity to see how Bronny James and Dalton Knecht have continued to develop, not to mention the first look at this year’s draft pick Adou Thiero. And there is always a chance at an unknown player making a name for himself, as Quincy Olivari did for the Lakers last year.

Lakers 2025 preseason schedule

Oct. 3: vs. Suns, Acrisure Arena, Palm Desert; 7:00 p.m. PT
Oct. 5: at Warriors, Chase Center, San Francisco; 5:30 p.m. PT
Oct. 12: vs. Warriors, Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles; 6:30 p.m. PT
Oct. 14: at Suns, PHX Arena, Phoenix; 7 p.m. PT
Oct. 15: vs. Mavericks, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas; 7 p.m. PT

Lakers Rumors: LeBron James ‘Supportive’ & ‘Understanding’ Of Organizational Shift To Luka Doncic

While the Los Angeles Lakers have taken the past few days to celebrate Luka Doncic to a new extension, LeBron James has been busy enjoying his summer off.

James was not in attendance for Doncic’s press conference but did FaceTime his co-star to congratulate him on his new deal. Some initially took it as LeBron being passive aggressive, but it’s completely normal for NBA players’ schedules not to line up.

The upcoming 2025-26 season could very well be James’ last season in Los Angeles as he opted into his player option without a new contract in place. The franchise is all-in on building around Doncic, which could leave James as almost an afterthought in planning.

However, James reportedly is OK with the transition plan and will finish his career how he wants to, via Shams Charania of ESPN:

“I am told he’s been supportive and understanding that the Lakers are moving more towards a Luka Doncic-led future. Now, what does that mean for LeBron James? He’s opted in, so technically he’s a Laker. How will he finish his career though? Is he gonna play Year 23 and finish out in L.A. and that’s gonna be it? At the end of the day, I think the Lakers even understand he’s gonna end his career on his own terms. He wants to end his career on his own terms and I think he’s earned the right to do that. We just don’t know what that looks like yet.”

It’s good to hear that James is on board with the Lakers moving forward with Doncic, and it makes sense as he would likely do the same if he was in the organization’s shoes. Doncic is a generational superstar hitting his prime and Los Angeles needs to do what it takes to give him the players and support he needs to chase titles.

Meanwhile, it’s still a positive situation for James as a healthy and motivated Doncic presents his best chance to win at least one more title before retiring. While James might not prefer the current circumstances, the Lakers and Doncic ultimately make the most sense for him to close his career out with.

Rob Pelinka says LeBron James retiring with Lakers would be great

The Lakers are the perfect franchise for LeBron James to retire with as they know how to treat superstars. President of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka noted they’ll respect James’ wishes, but said it would be great if he retired with the team.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Joins Slovenia For EuroBasket; Expected To Play Against Germany On Friday

Luka Doncic is officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers for the long-haul after he signed a new three-year contract extension, tying his prime years to the storied franchise.

For weeks, it had been reported that Doncic would commit to the Lakers and the organization has done everything in its power to show him the feeling is mutual. Los Angeles’ future post-LeBron James was murky at best, but Doncic provides a clear path forward to contend for titles for years to come.

In order to transform his body ahead of his most important season yet, Doncic focused on dieting and conditioning without playing any live basketball. However, he is set to play for the Slovenian National Team for the upcoming EuroBasket 2025 tournament, marking his return to the court.

Shortly after signing his extension with the Lakers, Doncic reported to the national team and appears ready to play on Friday against Germany in their first exhibition game:

"It's always nice to see national team teammates. In the team there are some new faces, but I'm sure, that we'll catch up fast. I know guys already had great practices in these days and I'm already looking forward to a Fridays games vs Germany"

– Luka Dončić

Video of Doncic arriving and practicing was also released by the Slovenian National Team:

From the looks and sounds of it, Doncic seems happy to be back with his national team practicing and playing basketball. The 26-year-old acknowledged he hadn’t gone without playing basketball for this long before, so this comes at a great time as he gets chance to find his rhythm and timing back.

Slovenia’s schedule for EuroBasket 2025 was recently released, with Doncic and the team kicking off exhibition games against Germany and ending on Aug. 21 against Serbia. From there, Slovenia will begin group play a week later on Aug. 28 against Poland.

It’s hard to imagine Slovenia advancing far in the tournament as several other countries have multiple NBA players representing their respective national teams, but Lakers fans will only care how Doncic looks on the court before training camp.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Has ‘Moved On’ From Mavericks Trade

More than half a year later and it’s still surreal that Luka Doncic is now the face of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers were somehow able to find their new superstar midseason after the Dallas Mavericks inexplicably gave up on Doncic after he just led them to the 2024 NBA Finals. Doncic was understandably devastated by the trade because he had expected to spend his whole career in Dallas, but now finds himself in Los Angeles with an organization that understands how to treat superstars.

The 26-year-old recently showed his commitment to the Lakers when he signed a three-year extension with a player option for the 2028-29 season. Doncic could have waited to sign, but wound up inking a deal to secure his financial future while giving him an out down the line to recoup even more money.

Doncic looked visibly happier at his press conference and for good reason as his manager Lara Beth Seager revealed that he has moved on from the Mavericks trade, via Dan Woike of The Athletic:

Lara Beth Seager, Dončić’s manager, said he’s no longer carrying any baggage from his exit from Dallas.

“He’s moved on,” she told The Athletic.

Seager added that Doncic is all-in on Los Angeles and is doing what is needed to win:

“He’s only looking forward. And he’s here. He wants to get the best players here. He wants to win, and he knows it starts with him,” Seager said. “And I think that’s what he proved this offseason. ‘OK, everyone wants to say or people think that they know me or I’m not a leader or I’m this way, or I’m that way, I don’t care. They can think and say whatever they want.

“I’m gonna show them who I am.’”

Doncic may be 26 years old with several years of his prime remaining, but he’s operating like someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to capture a championship right away. After this past season, there were questions and criticisms hurled at Doncic, but he has an opportunity to quiet any doubters and reestablish himself as one of the best players in the world.

Dallas may have brought out the best version of Doncic and Los Angeles is fortunate to have someone like him leading the franchise for years to come.

Lakers Video: De’Aaron Fox Reveals Conversation With Kobe Bryant That Left Impact On Him

Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard Luka Doncic wasn’t the only player to sign a max extension this past week as the San Antonio Spurs agreed to a four-year deal with De’Aaron Fox. And like many of the top players in the league today, Fox was able to establish a connection with Lakers legend Kobe Bryant before his tragic passing.

Fox has long been known as one of the most fierce competitors in the NBA today. A former All-Star who might be the fastest player in the league, Fox is now locked in with the Spurs where he will look to lead them alongside phenom Victor Wembanyama. But even years later, his conversations with Kobe still stand out to him.

In an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Fox spoke about how his conversations with the Lakers legend impacted him both on and off the court:

De’Aaron Fox’s late night conversation with Kobe Bryant changed everything

— All the Smoke (@allthesmokeprod) August 4, 2025

Like Fox said, Kobe was a teacher and the fact that he openly offered these camps to impart his knowledge to the next generation shows just how much he loved the game and wanted to see it thrive. That was also seen in his dedication to coaching his daughter’s team as Bryant just had a love for the game that few others did.

It is why his impact is still felt to this day. Nearly a decade after he played his final game for the Lakers, so many still talk about that Mamba Mentality driving them, and even Fox noted how his mindset carrying over to someone like Stephen Curry makes him even more difficult to defend. There simply are very few people like Bryant to ever walk this earth and Fox counts himself as fortunate to have been able to spend the time with him that he did.

Lakers superstar Luka Doncic admits to being nervous meeting Kobe Bryant for the first time

Luka Doncic, like De’Aaron Fox, was also fortunate enough to have met Kobe Bryant a couple of times before his passing and still counts the Lakers legend as one of his idols. And Doncic recently revealed that he was extremely nervous and could barely speak when meeting him for the first time.

Luka Doncic Can Get Full No-Trade Clause In Next Lakers Contract

The biggest question of the offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers has been answered. Luka Doncic signed an extension with the franchise on the day he was eligible, tying him to the team for at least the next three seasons. He can become an unrestricted free agent again in the summer of 2028 by declining a player option for the 2028-29 season.

His extension was a three-year deal with a player option on the third year, which was widely always believed to be his likeliest extension path. There are two major reasons for this. One — which has been oft-discussed — is that he can become a free agent again after 10 years of NBA service time, unlocking the highest tier of max contract that would allow him to recoup some supermax money he lost when the Dallas Mavericks traded him to L.A.

The second reasons is one that, as NBA insider Marc Stein breaks down below, Doncic has the potential to unlock a full no-trade clause:

The three-year contract extension Dončić chose to ink, as explained here yesterday, includes a player option for 2028-29 that enables him to become a free agent in the summer of 2028 and then sign a five-year deal worth in excess of $400 million. That second Lakers deal would more than offset the five-year supermax in the $340 million range that he was initially expected to sign with the Mavericks this summer.

Yet there is another bonus that comes with the contract structure Dončić chose:

Dončić will be eligible to have a full no-trade clause added to his next deal as long as he goes to unrestricted free agency and signs an all-new contract.

NBA players can only become eligible for a full no-trade clause with eight years of service time and four with the same team. No-trade clauses, however, can only be added to a new contract; league rules preclude them from being added to extensions. Dončić will have technically spent only 3 1/2 seasons as a Laker by the time he can decline his 2028-29 player option and become a free agent, but league sources tell The Stein Line that he’ll indeed be deemed a four-year Laker at that point because he will have finished four consecutive seasons in purple and gold at that stage.

By ending four seasons as a member of the Lakers and signing a new deal as an unrestricted free agent, Doncic can ask for a no-trade clause. And the Lakers would almost certainly give it, similar to how they gave one to LeBron James after his fourth season with L.A.

This is a franchise who takes care of its stars and will give Luka anything he asks for when the times comes to lock in a new deal. Of course, that may mean some scary moments if Doncic ultimately decides to become an unrestricted free agent. But if the last six months are any indication, his commitment to L.A. seems strong.

Pau Gasol congratulates Luka Doncic on extension

Luka Doncic had been expected to sign his extension with the Lakers for weeks and made it a reality after he returned to Los Angeles as part of his Jordan Brand tour. The timing of the tour was perfect as it allowed Doncic to be present for the first day the Lakers could officially offer his extension.

There is no shortage of ramifications Doncic’s extension has, though the main thing is the team now has a clear direction and path forward toward contention. At his peak, Doncic has a case to be the best basketball player in the world and after getting in shape this summer he’s poised to make another leap.

Members of the Lakers family like Pau Gasol are thrilled to have Doncic in L.A. and the franchise legend offered his congratulations to the star.

Lakers Rumors: Executives Believe Austin Reaves Will Re-Sign Next Offseason

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves made some headlines this offseason when it was reported that he was declining a four-year extension offer by the franchise. However, that move was entirely expected, as Reaves’ four-year max is nowhere near what he could make if he declines his player option next summer and becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Lakers could only offer Reaves an annual average salary of around $23 million in this extension offer because of the rules limiting how much of a raise a player can get on the final year of a contract in the first year of a new extension. If he waits until next summer, he could sign for a full 25% max deal, if he can get it.

So while headlines saying that Reaves declined an extension offer from the Lakers got some fans worried about his future in L.A., it is reportedly believed that the future of both him and the franchise are interlocked, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN:

The expectation, from both that executive and others, is that Reaves ultimately will return to Los Angeles, which would cement Reaves’ role as the long-term running mate next to Doncic in L.A.’s backcourt — the role once held by Brunson then Irving in Dallas.

Luka Doncic and Reaves have appeared to enjoy playing alongside one another, and the numbers in the regular season support that. Doncic and Reaves played 668 minutes together in the regular season after the former was traded to L.A. — the second-most of any two-man combo on the Lakers — and had a 6.5 net rating.

They were able to score in bunches and not hemorrhage points on the defensive end, despite the fact that neither are considered plus defenders in the NBA. But if the Lakers vision is to create their version of Kyrie Irving or Jalen Brunson alongside Doncic, Reaves makes plenty of sense as the player to do that with.

Luka is now under contract with L.A. until at least the 2027-28 season, meaning if Reaves does sign next summer on a long-term deal, they’ll have a strong 1-2 punch out of the backcourt locked in and ready to go.

Rob Pelinka built Lakers roster to maintain optionality

Now that Rob Pelinka and the Lakers front office have officially signed superstar Luka Doncic to a contract extension, the question now is what moves they will make to build a legit title contender around him.

The front office has made some moves this offseason, signing Deandre Ayton in free agency to give Doncic a rim-running center to pair with on the pick-and-roll, as well as bringing in defensive-minded players in veteran guard Marcus Smart and wing Jake LaRavia. However, many don’t view the Lakers as being amongst the elite teams of the NBA just yet.

Pelinka was asked about continuing to build this team and the Lakers general manager made it clear that they are always in win-now mode, but also wants to make smart moves and feels this franchise is in position to do so if an opportunity presents itself.
