After 46 years of coaching the Penn St. Nittany Lions, head coach Joe Paterno has announced he will retire after the end of this season. His career being brought to a horrible end because he failed to do all he could about an allegation of child sex abuse against a former assistant coach.

He said this just after initial reports of retirement: "I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief."

Paterno currently has the record for most FBS wins with 409, but his legacy of "winning the right way" is now blemished.

This makes me extremely sad. Joe Paterno was such a great, funny coach, and if it weren't for this, he still would be coaching at least another year after this, not to mention he'll be leaving in disgrace.

Seeing anyone else coach Penn St. just won't seem right....

Goodbye to the greatest FBS coach ever. We'll miss you Joe Pa.

i lost a lot of respect for him and Penn State in general over this scandal. Sure he reported it to his higher ups, but i think calling the police would've been better.

Very sad that this had to happen at the end of his career that will tarnish his legacy as people will always remember this scandal when they think of him.

At this point, Joe had to go. I think PSU will be way better off with someone else... (Hopefully Urban Meyer!!) Joe hasn't even been coaching much the past couple years, he's just been up in the press box. I think this was the best possible move for Penn State, though I am sad to see him go.

Not a good way to come to an end of a career. But he was a great coach, and was probably going to retire anyway. Sad to see him leave. Hopefully he finishes the season strong.

How is he a terrible person? He did all that he HAD to do according to protocol. Sure, should have told the police, but you can't call him a terrible person because he made one mistake. And Moss, Joe Paterno was just as good of a coach this year as he was 10 years ago. :P

I agree that he should have done more, but honestly, nobody really knows how much information was presented to him. As far as we know right now, on only one instance was he informed about it.

I agree with him being fired, but I hate all these people bashing him.

Um. He didn't report the molesting of boys? Yea. I'ma stick with "terrible person".

Also, he was fired today instead of being allowed to retire. Serves him right.

He was still coaching his team, it doesn't matter where he was doing it from.

He was still coaching his team, it doesn't matter where he was doing it from. He was the "coach", but he still did not act enough like one. A real coach should run on to the field with his team, not watch from the press box. Tom Bradley was coaching more than he was.

Well he's 84....you can't really expect him to run around like he used to.

He was still calling most of the plays though, I'm pretty sure.

You're making it sound like coaching is about show and being some hot-head on the sideline. Coaching is about being smart and calling good plays, not your athletic abilities.
