Report: Jets trying to get Breece Hall signed before tag deadline

Last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, Jets general manager Darren Mougey indicated that the team would use either the franchise tag or the transition tag on running back Breece Hall if the two sides could not agree to a long-term contract before tomorrow’s deadline to use the tags.

We still have no deal struck, although SNY’s Connor Hughes indicates the two sides continue to negotiate.

The #Jets are & continue to actively negotiate with Breece Hall's representatives in hopes of reaching an agreement contract, per sources. The preference is not the tag.

— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) March 1, 2026
The Jets are actively negotiating with Hall and hope to reach agreement on a contract near three years in length, per sources. General manager Darren Mougey plans to use the transition tag if the sides cannot finalize an extension, though that remains a fallback option that the team would prefer to avoid.

Using the transition tag instead of the franchise tag would strike me as a rather foolish decision. The transition tag would only save around $3 million over the franchise tag. It would also allow Hall to seek offers from other team and sign an offer sheet. The Jets would have the ability to match any offer sheet Hall signs to retain him. However, they would receive no compensation if they chose not to match and permitted Hall to leave.

Jets trade Jermaine Johnson to the Titans for T’Vondre Sweat

The Jets have traded defensive end Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. The story was broken by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The trade cannot be processed until the start of the new league year in March. pic.twitter.com/PzdYW9JeZ1

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 26, 2026

I’m sure this move won’t be popular among large portions of the Jets fanbase, but I think it’s a good one. Johnson has had one good season out of four in the NFL. He suffered an Achilles injury in 2024, and did not look like the same guy returning in 2025.

This deal will create over $10 million in salary cap space for the Jets.

Cap ramifications of the trade:

Johnson counts $13.4M on this year's cap; he's in the final year of his deal.

Sweat, a 2024 second-round pick, will count $1.7M on the Jets' cap And he's signed through 2027.#Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) February 26, 2026

Johnson also had a contract expiring at the end of 2026 and could be looking at a payday that his play to date just doesn’t justify. I think getting out of the $13.4 million commitment alone makes the deal worth it.

However, the Jets also got a useful player in Sweat. He isn’t a flashy guy. He won’t ever produce monster numbers. He is a quality space eater on the interior of the defensive line, a classic two down lineman. He isn’t someone who will change a defense, but he should be able to give the Jets defense quality snaps.

What do you think about the trade?

Jets will place franchise tag on running back Breece Hall

The Jets are going to use the franchise tag on Breece Hall per Connor Hughes.

Sources to @snytv: The #Jets will place the franchise tag ($14.293m) on RB Breece Hall.

The two sides were working towards an extension, but couldn’t quite get there. The Jets expect him to play on the tag.

Transition tag was originally New York’s preferred route, as… pic.twitter.com/aXl6MO7tfl

— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) March 3, 2026

This is not a surprise. Jets general manager Darren Mougey said just a few days ago that the Jets would tag Hall if the team could not work out a long-term extension for the running back by today’s deadline.

There were two questions. The first was whether the two sides could work out a deal in advance. The answer to that is clearly no. The second question was whether the Jets would use the franchise tag or the transition tag. The transition tag was just about $3 million cheaper but came with far fewer protections. On the transition tag, Hall would be able to seek offers from new teams. The Jets would have the right to match any offer sheet Breece signed with a new team, but they would get no compensation if they chose not to match. For all intents and purposes, the franchise tag keeps Hall a Jets for another year barring a trade. Because of how much stronger the franchise tag protections are, it is almost always the preferred choice for teams. The transition tag is rarely used. It isn’t entirely clear why the Jets were considering using the transition tag, but they wisely used the stronger tool at their disposal.

The franchise tag sets Hall’s salary at $14.293 million for 2026. The Jets and he can continue to try and reach a long-term deal, which could bring his cap number down for this season.

The Jets aren’t interested in one big name quarterback per report

The quarterback situation is anything but clear for the New York Jets heading into free agency. The team could go in a number of directions. One direction the Jets will not go is veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports the team has no interest in the 38 year old signal caller.

Take Kirk Cousins off the QB list if you are a Jets fan pic.twitter.com/mX7lQzidvi

— Ryan Sampson (@RyanMSampson) March 2, 2026

The Jets memorably failed to land Cousins in 2018 when the quarterback was a coveted free agent.

Cousins will turn 38 before the season starts, and his best days are behind him. The fact he was viewed as an option shows how limited the choices are at the Jets’ disposal.

Despite his decline, Cousins remains a likely upgrade over the quarterback play the Jets received in 2025. In fact, there aren’t many options available who are clearly better. Still, the declining Cousins was an uninspiring choice at best. It also isn’t clear he would have any interest in coming to a rebuilding Jets team.

The Jets are considering two veteran starting quarterbacks per reports

The Jets need to find a starting quarterback in 2026. There aren’t many quality options on the market. However, over the last few days a pair of teams announced they were moving on from big money veteran starting quarterbacks. The Cardinals are parting ways with Kyler Murray after seven years, while the Dolphins are doing the same with Tua Tagovailoa after six.

There has been at least some degree of discussion about both quarterbacks by Jets decision makers according to reports.

Zack Rosenblatt:

The Jets will absolutely explore the idea of adding Murray as their quarterback — and I can tell you with certainty that they were already having discussions about it in Indianapolis last week. There are obviously a lot of knocks against him — size, durability, reputation — and he’s not the kind of quarterback offensive coordinator Frank Reich usually prefers.

But relative to the other options on the table, I’m not sure they could do much better — especially considering he’ll cost next to nothing financially, giving the Jets leeway to use their draft capital and cap space to replenish the roster.

Coach Aaron Glenn has a relationship with Murray’s father — they both played at Texas A&M, though not at the same time — and has typically preferred quarterbacks with mobility. The Jets’ supporting cast on offense isn’t bad either: a solid offensive line, a No. 1 wide receiver (Garrett Wilson) and a talented running back (Breece Hall).
Jets are among the teams doing work on Tua, per @MikeGarafolo … Tua is 8-0 against the Jets with a 101 career passer rating. If Dolphins could play the Jets more, we wouldn't be in this situation.

— Barry Jackson (@flasportsbuzz) March 4, 2026

Neither player would be a terribly exciting option. Murray has posted a QBR below 50 in two of the last three seasons. Tagovailoa, meanwhile, somehow managed to post a worse QBR than Justin Fields in 2025.

The Jets don’t have many options, though, and both of these guys at least have track records of being competent starting quarterbacks.

Jets Reacts Survey: Grade the Jermaine Johnson-T’Vondre Sweat trade

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Jets fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Jets made a significant trade last week, sending defensive end Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat.

Johnson was a first round pick in 2022. His career got off to a good start. He was a solid rotational player as a rookie. He followed that by taking a step forward in year two, registering 7.5 sacks. He earned a Pro Bowl berth. Unfortunately his third season was cut short after he suffered an Achilles injury in Week 2. This past season, Johnson struggled leading to discussion whether the injury has altered the course of his career.

This week in our SB Nation Reacts survey we ask you to grade the deal. Are you happy with the trade? Do you think the Jets got enough in return? Vote below, and we will bring you the results in a few days.

Dane Brugler’s NFL mock draft has the Jets restocking their defense

imagn-27923456.jpg

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has put out a post-Combine mock draft. Brugler is generally considered a high level Draft analyst so his thoughts are worth noting.

2. New York Jets: Arvell Reese, edge, Ohio State
Reese had one of the most impressive workouts at this year’s combine — full stop. His athletic testing was outstanding, as expected, but his on-field performance was even more remarkable. His blend of speed, explosion and violence separates him in this class.

“Dude stole the freaking show,” an NFL scout said.

16. New York Jets (from IND): Makai Lemon, WR, USC

Maybe the Jets will opt for more size at receiver to complement Garrett Wilson, but Lemon has the competitive DNA that should speak to head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. Glenn had a front-row seat for Amon-Ra St. Brown with the Detroit Lions — it’s a good bet he would want to add a stylistically similar player.

33. New York Jets: CJ Allen, LB, Georgia

44. New York Jets (from DAL): Chris Johnson, CB, San Diego State

I love what the Jets were able to do in this mock: a high-level pass rush threat in Reese; a dynamic pass catcher in Lemon; a green-dot linebacker in the middle in Allen. And now at cornerback, Johnson, one of the more underrated prospects in the draft.

The Jets are facing conflicting pressures. The team needs to build up its offense to support a quarterback who will likely be drafted over the next two years. At the same time, the defense has close to no talent.

In this mock, Brugler clearly prioritizes the defense as the Jets add a player at each of the three levels in the first two rounds. Of course, when you have needs everywhere you can just play to the strength of the board.

The one dip into offense is Lemon at 16. There have been rumblings he performed poorly at interviews at the Combine. I can’t speak to that. All I can speak to is his on field production, and from that standpoint he seems like a good value with that pick. Adding him would get the Jets’ wide receiver group into fighting shape.

Jets offseason quarterback rumor mill is heating up

The Jets need a new quarterback. With free agency set to begin in the NFL next week, it is no surprise that rumors are flying.

Connor Hughes of SNY suggests journeyman veteran quarterback Carson Wentz could be a name to watch due to his ties with offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

The #Jets might not target just one quarterback in free agency. Belief from agents who met with them at the NFL Combine is that they prefer to add two — if they can. It's similar to what the #Giants did a year ago (Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston).

The #Jets might not target just one quarterback in free agency. Belief from agents who met with them at the NFL Combine is that they prefer to add two — if they can. It’s similar to what the #Giants did a year ago (Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston).

Kyler Murray was discussed, but he is expected to sign with the Vikings, per sources. No Kirk Cousins, but watch Geno Smith & Carson Wentz. There is interest there. Jacoby Brissett, too, if Cardinals can be convinced to part. Was told that’s “doubtful,” with Jimmy Garoppolo expected to stay in LA. JG signing with the Cardinals would change that.

Wentz might surprise some, because of the notion Frank Reich/Wentz relationship fell apart in Indianapolis. From my understanding, that was more GM/owner, not coach. The two remain very close.

One source told me that the QB Reich prefers is Wentz. A quote from another: “No one loves Wentz more than Frank.”

We’ll see what #NYJ can get done.

I’m not entirely sure what the Jets would see in Wentz beyond his relationship with Reich. He hasn’t been a full-time starter in the league since 2022 and hasn’t been a quality starter since 2019. I’m struggling to see the fit even as a backup. Tyrod Taylor was on the team in 2025 in no small part due to his locker room influence while questions about Wentz’s leadership ability have followed him through his career.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Atheltic suggests the Jets will have interest in Geno Smith.

Geno Smith will be a free agent.

The Jets will be involved. https://t.co/C2UEymqlk6

— Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 6, 2026

Smith started his career with the Jets as a second round Draft pick in 2013. He left the team as a free agent after. a tumultuous four year stint and bounced around the league before finding a home in Seattle as Russell Wilson’s backup. After Seattle traded Wilson in 2022, Geno took over as starter and played at a quality level for three years before being traded to the Raiders in 2025. His one season in Las Vegas was ugly. Smith was one of the least productive quarterbacks in the league, and at 35 there have to be questions about whether that is an indication of a steep decline.

The Jets won’t have many options, though.

Rosenblatt also lists Jacoby Brissett as a likely option.

Jacoby Brissett, Cardinals: It feels as if the Jets are tied to Brissett every offseason. The previous regime wanted to sign him as a backup on multiple occasions. He also, in many ways, feels like a perfect bridge quarterback for this Jets team in particular. Remove all of his connections to this iteration of the Jets and he’s simply a solid quarterback. He stepped in for Murray last season in Arizona and was prolific. Brissett averaged 280 passing yards per game and threw for 3,366 total yards — the second-most in the NFL from Week 6 onward — along with the third-most touchdowns (23). He finished the season ranked No. 12 in EPA per attempt.

The Jets ties, though, are what’s most notable here. First, there’s Reich: Brissett and Reich were together in Indianapolis from 2018 to 2020, and Brissett was the full-time starter in 2019 (after Andrew Luck’s surprise retirement), when he passed for 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. Reich said this about Brissett in 2019: “It’s impossible for me to have a higher opinion of Jacoby than I do.”

We are just a few days away from the start of the new league year. Unfortunately few quality options seem to be on the horizon for the Jets.

How an outdated rule impacts NFL free agency

imagn-28330732.jpg

With free agency set to begin, all eyes are on the amount of free salary cap space each of the 32 teams in the NFL currently has. According to Over the Cap, only four teams enter the offseason with more money to spend than the Jets.

There is another critical component of free agency that flies under the radar. That is the amount of cash each team has on hand.

At the risk of oversimplifying things, NFL contracts have two sorts of payments, guaranteed and non-guaranteed. They work exactly how you would imagine. Guaranteed money is money the team commit to pay no matter what. Non-guaranteed money will be paid only under certain conditions. Most non-guaranteed money is simply salary the player collects if he remains on the roster.

Guaranteed money comes with a catch. When an NFL team signs a player, it must place all guaranteed money (minus a deductible) into an escrow account until it is paid.

This rule is a relic of the past. In the first several decades of its existence, the NFL was not a stable league. Teams depended mostly on ticket sales to fund operations. As you probably know, ticket sales can be fickle. A bad year, bad economic conditions, and any number of other factors can lead to a steep decline. And when your ability to stay in business is based on selling tickets, it means trouble.

The early days of the NFL saw franchises constantly moving and/or folding. The escrow rule was meant to protect the players. All of the money they were owed was in an escrow account so the players would be paid even if the team they played for went under.

The NFL’s business model eventually transitioned into one driven by the sale of media rights, particularly the TV rights. This combined with expansive revenue sharing has provided the league with stability. No team has folded since the league’s first national television contract with CBS in 1962. The value of the TV deals has risen exponentially through the years. Teams now have big TV revenues coming in every year, and that money is stable.

There is no longer any doubt that teams will be able to pay out any contract given to a player. Even in the unlikely event a team was mismanaged to the point of insolvency, it is a guarantee multiple billionaires would line up to buy it and restore financial viability.

Still the escrow rule exists.

Over time the rule has been mildly weakened. Teams can now subtract $15 million on each contract from the amount they need to put in escrow on each deal. Still, the bulk of guaranteed money needs to go into an account when a deal is signed.

All NFL owners are very wealthy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they have hundreds of millions of dollars in cash laying around. The owners have money tied up in investments. For some owners, their wealth is based mainly on their ownership of an NFL team.

The escrow rule gives the very wealthiest owners a clear advantage in free agency. They are more likely to have extra cash at their disposal.

For owners who don’t have many other businesses beyond their team, things are a bit more challenging. Over the years there have been offseasons with rumblings about the Jets not having enough cash to make a big move. These have tended to come immediately following stretches where the Jets made a number of splashy and expensive additions. I can’t speak to the validity of these rumors, but the escrow rule would go a long way towards explaining these dynamics if true. If you give out a lot of guaranteed money one offseason, the cash goes into escrow. There might be less cash for big money contracts the next year (which also would need to go into escrow) even if you have a decent amount of salary cap space.

Why doesn’t the NFL get rid of this outdated rule? Nobody can say for sure. There is some speculation that the owners like the rule as a convenient excuse to not fully guarantee contracts. The rule certainly doesn’t seem necessarily, though. These days NFL teams can confidently project future revenue in a way that wasn’t possible decades ago.

In any event, this rule shows how important the business department is for each team. A big but underrated managing a team effectively means making sure you have immediate access to a sufficient amount of cash as free agency begins.

How I rank the Jets’ veteran quarterback options this offseason

imagn-27255515.jpg

The Jets are going to need to bring in at least one veteran quarterback this offseason. Unfortunately the options aren’t exactly great.

Below I’ll rank the quarterbacks based on my own personal preference.

I am beginning with the premise that there is no veteran quarterback worth trading for. Maybe that changes, but I don’t think Jacoby Brissett, Mac Jones, Tanner McKee, Tyson Bangent, Davis Mills, Spences Rattler, Derek Carr, or any other quarterback recently mentioned in trade rumors would be a material difference maker. I don’t want to trade Draft capital for any of these guys. Not one of them will turn the Jets into a winning team, and they aren’t superior to the options the Jets will have in free agency. If you can get an equal talent without giving up a pick, why give up a pick? You shouldn’t.

So let’s look at the options the Jets have in free agency. I have them ranked in tiers.

Tier 1: Low Level Starters

1. Kyler Murray

Let’s not mince words. Murray has been a disappointment. He is a former number one overall pick who has never won a Playoff game or led a top ten scoring offense. He has physical limitations, and there have been negative rumblings about his leadership skills floating for some time. He also seems to be trending down. In three of his last four seasons, he has posted a QBR under 55. Additionally, it isn’t entirely clear he is healthy. It is probably a red flag that the Cardinals are eating so much money to get rid of him.

So after all of that, how can he be ranked number one? Well, for starters the Jets’ options are terrible. Beyond that, even the underwhelming version of Murray we have seen over the last four years would be a substantial upgrade for the Jets at quarterback and frankly the highest level quarterback play the Jets have seen in a decade. Additionally, because of the guarantees and offsets from his Arizona contract, Murray is likely to sign at the league minimum. He might not be a great quarterback, but his production is a great value at a minimum salary.

2. Tua Tagovailoa

I’m sure sticking Tua here will evoke anguish. Again, it is a commentary on how dismal the options are here for the Jets. Like Murray, Tua was a disappointment for his original team. He comes with the added concern of an extensive concussion history. He might be one big hit from his career beng over.

However, like Murray he will likely sign for the minimum due to the guarantees and offsets from his Dolphins contract. At that price, he is also a good value.

Tua’s level of production through his career has been proportional to his surroundings. He can’t create much on his own. If you put him into a good situation, though, he can operate at a high level. It isn’t clear whether the Jets could actually get him a good enough supporting cast, but there aren’t many other quarterbacks available who can operate under any circumstances.

3. Kirk Cousins

Many Jets fans haven’t forgiven Cousins for using the team as leverage to extract more money from the Vikings in 2018. It isn’t clear how things would have gone had Cousins signed with the Jets.

If the team brought him in now, it isn’t hard to project how things would turn out. Cousins is at the end of his career and in decline. He probably would rank somewhere in the mid to low 20’s if starting quarterbacks across the league were ranked. Sadly, that would be better than your typical Jets quarterback situation over the last decade and a half. And there actually is value to having a guy under center who knows how to run an offense and how to get the ball to the first read when he’s open. Even if Cousins can’t do much more, it would actually add something the Jets haven’t had.

Tier 2: The Upside Play

4. Malik Willis

It’s tough to know what to make of Willis. He has started six games and attempted 155 passes across the entirety of his four year career. Over the last two seasons, he has started only three games with 89 passing attempts.

He has looked very good in limited action, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he could function at a high or even credible level across a full 17 game season. Even Justin Fields had two outstanding games for the Jets in 2025.

I watched Willis come off the bench in the Packers’ Week 16 loss to the Bears in place of an injured Jordan Love. I was impressed by how he looked. It also struck me that Mike LaFleur really scaled the offense back once Willis entered the game. It felt like Willis executed a limited playbook at a really high level. As a full-time starter, he would need to be able to do it all.

Could he thrive if he had the full playbook at his disposal for 17 games? Perhaps, but I really don’t know how you’d make that judgment.

If you’re signing Willis, you’re essentially betting on those 89 passing attempts serving as an indicator he is ready to run a team full-time. Given how few quality options are in free agency, there’s a price where that bet makes sense to me. It would be a one year deal worth backup plus money. (Let’s say $15 million.)

I’m expecting Willis to be paid much more, which is a huge gamble on a player who is pretty much a blank slate.

Tier 3: Probably Won’t Work But Worth a Shot…Maybe

5. Mitchell Trubisky

I’m not saying I acutually would expect Trubisky to play at a high level if the Jets signed him. He is a more intriguing upside play than you might think, though.

While things didn’t work out in Chicago, he wasn’t a colossal bust. By the end of his time with the Bears, Trubisky was a borderline passable starter with legitimate flashes. For the last five years he’s bounced around the league as a backup and bridge starter.

He’s always had the physical tools to succeed. Is it possible that after a few years out of the spotlight working with quality offensive coaches that he’s improved his grasp of passing concepts? Could he have reached a point where he’s actually ready to run his own offense?

If I had to bet, I’d say no. But the odds of him being a hidden gem are higher than zero. In such a thin market, that’s worth considering.

6. Geno Smith

A Geno return to the Jets would be quite a storyline. Smith’s first stint with the team wasn’t pretty. The team did him no favors by throwing him into a chaotic situation as a rookie with little supporting talent.

It took years of bouncing around the league as a backup, but Geno finally blossomed into a quality starter with the Seahawks.

A year ago I would have said he was a good option as a bridge quarterback. His season in Las Vegas was a disaster, though. He was arguably worse than Justin Fields. When that happens in your age 35 season, there have to be questions about whether it’s a sign of a decline that can’t be reversed. The truth is Geno has been trending down for three years.

Still, the Jets don’t have many options. For all of his faults, Geno is a year removed from at least being a competent starting quarterback. Like Murray and Tua, his contractual situation will leave him likely signing for the minimum. I can’t say I’d be terrible optimistic if the Jets brought him back, but I’d understand if they did it.

Tier 4: Bottom of the Barrel

7. Joe Flacco

After a big start to his Bengals tenure, Flacco’s late career renaissance seemed to run out of steam. I don’t think Flacco has much to offer beyond understanding how to run the basics of an offense and being a good locker room guy. He also will probably chip in a turn back the clock game every so often where he shreds a defense. That is amazingly more than we can say about most of the options the Jets have.

8. Marcus Mariota

A lot of what I just said about Flacco also applies to Mariota. I just think he’ll have fewer turn back the clock games.

Tier 5: Start the Coaching Search Now

9. Everybody Else

I don’t know that any of the quarterbacks I listed above can actually save Aaron Glenn’s job, but I think the alternatives lack redeeming qualities and almost certainly will lock in a top five pick in the NFL Draft. This group includes Carson Wentz, Jimmy Garoppolo, and any other name you want to throw out.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! Free agency is finally here. Two months after ending last season’s epic failure, the New York Jets will begin to put that behind them. They will take a boatload of cap space and try to rebuild a roster that is currently little more than an expansion team. It all begins today with the legal tampering period, starting at noon. Within a week or so we will have a much better idea of what the 2026 Jets starting lineup will look like, how bad the quarterback situation is likely to be, and what positions are most likely to be filled through the draft. Buckle up, it’s time to transform this talent-starved roster.

Why the Jets’ 2026 Quarterback Search Could Come Down to Three Veterans

gettyimages-2254626557.jpg

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JANUARY 04: Kirk Cousins #18 of the Atlanta Falcons warms up prior to the game against the New Orleans Saints at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 04, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The New York Jets will head into the 2026 offseason facing a familiar question: who will start at quarterback? Several names could enter the conversation through free agency or trades, but when you narrow the field based on scheme fit, cost, and the realities inside the building, three veterans stand out as the most logical possibilities. Kirk Cousins, Geno Smith, and Carson Wentz each represent a different path forward for the Jets and the choice between them may reveal which voice carries the most influence within the organization.

Head coach Aaron Glenn needs wins. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich needs a quarterback who can execute his timing based system. The right quarterback may be the one who best balances both priorities.

Kirk Cousins: The Gold Standard Veteran

If the Jets want the safest possible starting quarterback for 2026, Cousins may be the best option available. The longtime veteran is expected to hit free agency after the Atlanta Falcons announced plans to release him to avoid triggering a massive future contract guarantee. While Cousins is now 37 years old, he still represents one of the most disciplined rhythm passers in the NFL.

For Frank Reich’s offense, that matters.Reich’s system is built around quarterbacks who operate on schedule identifying protections, reading defenses before the snap, and delivering the ball on time. Cousins has built a career on precisely those skills. His pre snap processing and ability to control protections would allow the Jets to run a complex offense immediately. For Aaron Glenn, however, the appeal may be even simpler: Cousins protects the football. Even while splitting time with Michael Penix Jr. last season in Atlanta, Cousins posted a respectable 10 touchdown to 5 interception ratio. Compared to higher risk quarterbacks around the league, he represents the ultimate anti chaos option.

Geno Smith: The Stability Play

If Cousins represents the safest pure quarterback option, Smith may represent the most balanced one.Recently released by the Las Vegas Raiders, Smith has rebuilt his career as a reliable veteran capable of running a modern passing offense while protecting the football. For a coach like Aaron Glenn who needs immediate results, Smith offers a high floor without requiring a long-term commitment.Smith also fits well with the Jets’ current playmakers.

He throws an excellent deep ball and excels on vertical timing routes areas where wide receiver Garrett Wilson thrives. His quick decision-making would also help keep the offense balanced and allow running back Breece Hall to remain heavily involved in both the running and passing game. Smith may not have the same reputation for pre-snap mastery as Cousins, but his recent consistency makes him one of the most dependable veteran starters likely to be available.

Carson Wentz: The Frank Reich Reunion

Then there is the most familiar name in the room. Wentz and Frank Reich share one of the strongest quarterback coach relationships in the league. Wentz played the best football of his career under Reich with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and later reunited with him on the Indianapolis Colts. Few quarterbacks understand Reich’s offensive philosophy better.

At 6’5” with a strong arm, Wentz fits the traditional prototype Reich prefers a big pocket passer capable of attacking the middle of the field with layered throws and deep crossers. Those concepts could work well with Wilson and tight end Mason Taylor operating in the intermediate areas of the field. The appeal here is familiarity and upside. The risk is volatility. Wentz has shown flashes of high-level play but has also struggled with inconsistency throughout his career.

The Decision May Come Down to Philosophy

If these three quarterbacks truly become the Jets’ top options, the final decision may reveal how the team views its immediate future. If the priority is maximizing job security for the coaching staff, Cousins may be the safest path. His processing, accuracy, and ball security provide the highest floor. If the Jets want the most balanced combination of cost and recent performance, Smith could emerge as the middle ground option. If Frank Reich ultimately pushes for the quarterback who best understands his system, the Jets could reunite him with Carson Wentz. Every offseason presents the Jets with another quarterback crossroads.

This year’s version may come down to a simple question. Do they want the safest veteran, the most balanced option, or the quarterback who best fits the offensive system? If the Falcons end up subsidizing much of Cousins’ 2026 salary, he could become the most intriguing possibility of all a veteran point guard quarterback available at a fraction of his normal cost. For a team trying to win now while stabilizing the franchise, that combination could be hard to ignore.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! Day one of the legal tampering period is in the books, and it was quite the whirlwind for the New York Jets. The day got off to an early start, with the Jets trading a seventh round pick in the 2026 NFL draft to the Miami Dolphins for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Jets then signed Fitzpatrick to a three year, $40 million extension. From there the Jets were off to the races. They signed safety Dane Belton, edges Joseph Assai and Kingsley Enagbare, defensive tackle David Onyemata and linebacker Demario Davis in short order. That’s six additions to the defense in one day. For a defense that lacked credible talent at every level, it was a much needed talent infusion.

On offense it was a different story. The Jets made no additions to the offense and lost guards John Simpson and Alijah Vera-Tucker to other teams. With glaring holes at quarterback, guard and wide receiver, the Jets still have plenty of work to do on the offense, while cornerback and pass rushing remain glaring holes on the defense. On special teams the Jets have a hole at kicker as Nick Folk signed elsewhere. The team is better today than it was a week ago, but there’s still plenty of work to do. Let’s see what the Jets can accomplish over the next few weeks leading up to the draft.

Not a Savior, But a Solution: The Case for Geno Smith in the Jets’ 2026 Plan

gettyimages-2192850419.jpg

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - DECEMBER 01: Geno Smith #7 of the Seattle Seahawks scrambles in the first quarter against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on December 01, 2024 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) | Getty Images

When the Jets acquired Geno Smith from the Raiders, the immediate reaction from some corners of the internet was predictable: flashbacks to the ugly early years, the broken jaw, the struggles. But before you let nostalgia suck the life out of you, it’s worth honestly examining what actually happened in Las Vegas because the story is more complicated than the box score suggests.

Smith’s 2025 season with the Raiders was garbage Seventeen interceptions, an 84.7 passer rating, and a completion percentage that had no business being that low for a guy who posted a 70% clip in his best Seattle years. But the underlying numbers told a different story. His turnover worthy play rate sat at just 2.6% meaning he rarely put the ball in genuinely dangerous spots. The interceptions were largely a product of bad luck and worse design. He led the league in red zone picks, but the play calling near the goal line was some of the most unimaginative football you’ll see at the professional level. Coordinator Ryan Grubb brought his college pass first philosophy to the NFL and never really adapted. His own postgame admissions said it all he acknowledged the offense lacked the run pass balance needed to win meaningful games, and without a functional ground game, defenses sat on Geno’s routes and made him pay. Throw in a receiver room of Jakobi Meyers, an injured Bowers, and a group of rookies still figuring out how to run NFL routes, and you have a recipe for statistical disaster that had very little to do with the quarterback.

Now contrast that with what Frank Reich is building in New York. Reich is a throwback in the best sense a coach whose offensive DNA runs through Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers, built on structure, rhythm, and balance. His run game forms the spine of everything: inside zone and man concepts make up well over 60% of his rush attempts, creating the kind of predictable defensive alignments that let quarterbacks operate in manageable situations. In the passing game, he keeps things controlled dig routes, drags, short to intermediate concepts that let a quarterback process quickly and deliver with confidence. That is precisely the environment where Geno Smith thrives. His peak in Seattle wasn’t built on Hail Mary throws and backyard football it was built on anticipation, timing, and accuracy on in breaking routes. Reich’s system is almost custom designed to bring that version back. There are fair questions about whether Reich will modernize his pre snap motion usage, which has historically lagged well behind the league average, but Aaron Glenn has already signaled that younger voices on the staff will push the offense forward in that regard.

The bottom line is this, the regression in Las Vegas was real, but it was also heavily situational. A bad scheme, a thin roster, and a locker room without cohesion will do that to any quarterback. What Geno Smith is walking into with the Jets is a structured offensive environment, a coaching staff that values the run game, and a fresh start in the city where his career began. Gang Green fans have every reason to feel cautiously optimistic not because the problems didn’t happen, but because most of them weren’t his to own.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The big news of the day is that the New York Jets have a starting quarterback for 2026. The Jets traded a sixth round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Geno Smith and a seventh round pick. Smith will return to where he started his NFL career. While Smith is hardly an exciting acquisition, he will likely be no worse, and possibly a bit better, than most of the other options available to the Jets. The bottom line is whomever the Jets settled on as their starting quarterback this season was very likely to be an unpopular choice, largely because there were few good choices, and the few there were likely had better options available to them. So Geno Smith it is, and we hope he has a season or two in him more like what we saw in Seattle a few years ago than what we saw in Las Vegas last year.

Free agency continues in the NFL today. At 4:00 pm Eastern the new league year officially begins. That is the point where new contracts for free agents changing teams can be signed and filed with the league office. Many verbal deals were already struck during the negotiation phases of the legal tampering period. Now thye will become official.

The Jets made headlines yesterday by trading for quarterback Geno Smith. It is a homecoming for Smith who was the team’s second round pick in 2013. His first stint with the Jets went about as poorly as one could imagine. Geno bounced around the league before finding a home with Seattle. Smith settled in as the starting quarterback after the Russell Wilson trade and played quality football for a couple of years. Then came a trade to the Raiders a year ago which did not work out for anybody. The Jets now turn to Geno hoping to see a bounceback and to receive decent quarterback play.

Who will be part of his supporting cast? The Jets still have some work to do building their team. We will see who they add today as free agency continues.

This post will be updated as the Jets make moves.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets continued to build their roster through free agency yesterday, re-signing backup offensive lineman Max Mitchell and signing guard Dylan Parham. Pending the results of the 2026 NFL draft, Parham is currently penciled in as a starter, presumably taking John Simpson’s old spot at guard. Unless the Jets bring in a replacement for center Josh Myers, or move Joe Tippmann back to center and bring in another starting guard, it appears the Jets starting offensive line is set for the 2026 season.

Now the Jets need to pivot to finding running mates for Garrett Wilson. The Jets could use two new receivers behind Wilson. Good options in free agency are dwindling. Perhaps some combination of the trade market and the draft can fill these holes.
