If you are looking for a sign that we have reached the silly season of the NFL offseason, look no further than a rumor put out this week by The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt that the Jets contact former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden about joining Aaron Glenn’s staff.

For whatever it’s worth, WFAN’s Craig Carton suggested he heard the same thing.

The source himself, however, has refuted the report. In an interview, Gruden himself called the rumor “stupid.”

The idea of Gruden joining Aaron Glenn’s staff as an assistant coach was nothing short of absurd. Gruden hasn’t been an assistant coach since 1997. Since then he has had two stints as head coach of the Raiders along with a stint as head coach of the Buccaneers. In between he has built a successful media career. It’s tough to imagine him taking an assistant job for the first time in close to three decades to work for the league’s least successful franchise and a coaching staff that will likely be be on the hot seat sooner rather than later.

The rumor was so ridiculous that at first I thought it was some sort of attempt at satire by Rosenblatt.

The other thing that comes to mind is sometimes when a team suspects an employee of leaking information to the press, they give that person a fake story to see whether it gets planted in the media.

I can’t say for sure what’s happening here, but I think we can all agree that Gruden won’t be joining Aaron Glenn’s staff.

LOL oh man where do I even start with this dumpster fire happening across the river

Look I'm a Bills fan so watching the Jets implode is basically my favorite winter sport, but even I gotta say this whole coaching staff situation is WILD. Like genuinely unhinged levels of dysfunction.

The Gruden rumor is absolutely hilarious though. You're telling me the Jets supposedly reached out to a guy who hasn't been an assistant since 1997 to come work under Aaron Glenn?? A guy who won a Super Bowl as a HEAD COACH is gonna take a demotion to work for the most dysfunctional franchise in football?? Come on man. That story had "planted leak to catch a mole" written all over it from the jump.

And the whole Duker hire... I actually don't think it's as bad as people are making it out to be. Glenn's defenses in Detroit were legitimately good. The problem is the PROCESS to get there was an absolute mess. Three weeks of interviews, supposedly almost hiring Wink Martindale, then suddenly pivoting to a guy who wasn't even in the first round of interviews?? That's not a plan, that's panic.

But here's what kills me - the Engstrand firing timing makes ZERO sense. Fire him day one after the season? Nobody blinks. Wait three weeks and let it leak that he might stay in a reduced role first? Now you look like you have no idea what you're doing.

Classic Jets. They could've arrived at reasonable decisions but took the most painful, embarrassing route possible.

At least Josh Allen is about to play in the Super Bowl while y'all figure out who's calling plays 😂

Scouting Jets wide receiver Mac Dalena

Over the last few months, we’ve been taking an in-depth look at some of the late season signings who are under contract for 2026, and futures signings after the end of the season. We continue today with wide receiver Mac Dalena, who signed a futures deal after the season.

The 24-year old Dalena is listed at 5’10” and 176 pounds and was undrafted out of Fresno State last season. He has not made his NFL debut yet, although he has spent time with the Chiefs and Seahawks. Dalena had a thousand-yard season in his final year of college in 2024 and was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection.

Background

Dalena was a three-star high school recruit, who headed to Fresno State in 2020 and had four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown in six games in his first season.

In 2021, he mostly contributed on special teams, although he did make the first start of his career on offense. He did not register any catches.

2022 saw Dalena’s role increase as he started three of 14 games and caught 11 passes for 99 yards and a score.

He then became a full-time starter in 2023, catching 47 passes for 509 yards and three touchdowns. However, his fifth season was his best, as he had 64 catches for over 1,000 yards and eight scores to earn first-team all-Mountain West Conference recognition.

Having not been selected in the 2025 NFL draft, Dalena signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent and attended training camp with them. He caught two passes for nine yards in preseason but did not make the team.

While Dalena was signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad in November, he lasted just five days and hadn’t been with a team again until the Jets signed him to a futures deal after the season.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Dalena brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Dalena lacks size and his listed weight of 176 pounds is obviously too small for the NFL. However, he has probably already began the process of bulking up having attended an NFL camp last summer. He managed 11 bench press reps at his pro day.

Also at his pro day, he made headlines with an unofficial 4.36 in the 40-yard dash, although the official time was 4.43. His explosiveness and agility numbers were both also very good.

Usage

At his size, Dalena will probably be mostly limited to a slot role at the NFL level, although he has experience in all three receiver positions and did line up out wide at times in preseason with the Chiefs. His slot usage increased over the course of his college career, although it was still less than 25 percent in his final season.

He occasionally carried the ball on jet sweeps and end arounds, including on one play in 2023 where he rushed for a 33-yard gain.

Deep threat

Dalena’s role expanded significantly in his final season. He had previously been more of a possession receiver that had only shown a few flashes of big play potential. However, in 2024, he became a legitimate downfield threat, racking up over half of his yards and six of his eight touchdowns on passes more than 20 yards down the field.

He ended the season with a 16.6 yards per catch average which was good for fourth best in the Mountain West Conference.

His numbers in this area could have been much better too, as it was not uncommon for him to get behind the defense only to then have to slow down to catch an underthrown or late pass because Fresno State quarterbacks were not particularly efficient at throwing deep passes.

dalena5.gif

Hands

Dalena established himself as a sure-handed receiver with the Bulldogs as he had a 71 percent catch rate in his career and only dropped four passes.

dalena8.gif

He shows an ability to snag passes beyond his frame and can get low to make catches close to the ground or sideline.

Routes

Dalena shows short area burst on slants and out-breaking patterns and is effective on double-moves to get open down the field. He has good balance and can be sharp when accelerating out of his breaks. He also does a good job of disguising his release and route breaks.

dalena7.gif

He has said that he idolized Julian Edelman because that is someone who has a similar style of play, so he brings similar things to the table in terms of being a possession option and getting open in tight areas.

Red zone

Dalena only had 13 career touchdowns in college and over half of these were from outside the red zone. However, on those he did make in the red zone, he showed some ability to get open early in the play or to find space if a play was extended.

dalena6.gif

After the catch

Dalena has the quickness and agility to be very good after the catch, although his missed tackle numbers and YAC totals are not all that impressive. He does flash at times, though, and did show some improvements in this area over the course of his career.

dalena9.gif

Both his catches in preseason action came on receiver screens for gains of four and five yards. He showed aggression with this attempted stiff arm on one of them, but ended up getting flagged.

dalena2.gif

He had one fumble in college.

Blocking

Due to his lack of size, you wouldn’t expect Dalena to contribute much as a blocker and his performance grades on analysis sites like Pro Football Focus tend to be below average.

However, a closer look at least shows that he competes and puts in the effort to stay on his man in these situations. He showed good downfield hustle to contribute on this long touchdown run.

dalena0.gif

Physicality

Despite his lack of size, Dalena shows some tenaciousness and is competitive and tough when going over the middle.

Contested catches were another area of his game which showed some improvement towards the end of his college career.

dalena4.gif

Against the bigger and stronger defenders at the NFL level, he’s going to be less capable of competing at the catch-point and there has already been some evidence of that from his preseason action.

dalena1.gif

Special Teams

Dalena was a good special teams contributor in college, racking up 16 career tackles in kickoff coverage and as a punt gunner. This impressive play, which denied UCLA a touchdown that ultimately cost them the game, saw him run down the California 100 meters State Champion.

dalena3.gif

He also recovered a fumble on a kickoff and blocked a punt in college. In addition, he at one stage filled in as an emergency placekicker and made two out of four extra points.

Dalena doesn’t have much kick return experience although he did field a few kickoffs and punts including an onside kick and one kickoff that he returned 36 yards.

Instincts and Intelligence

Dalena shows a good instinct for finding gaps in zone coverages and coming back to the quarterback when plays are extended. However, his vision as a ball carrier is often lacking as he doesn’t always maximize his potential yardage by following blockers or taking the path of least resistance and is often taken down by the first man to get to him.

He was a three-time Mountain West Conference all-Academic selection.

Attitude

Dalena, who was a high school team captain and a game captain at Fresno State, looks to bring the same kind of hard working attitude as his idol Edelman. Coaches and teammates have praised his dedication, commitment and confidence levels.

On field discipline is not a concern as he had just two penalties in college.

Injuries

So far, Dalena has been fortunate with injuries and doesn’t seem to have been affected by them in his career.

Scheme Fit

As noted, aside from his potential special teams contributions, Dalena’s most likely NFL role would be as a possession receiver operating mainly out of the slot.

He was a teammate of current Jets player Dean Clark at Fresno State and Cam Jones and Bailey Zappe at Kansas City.

Conclusions

Dalena didn’t make much of an impression in preseason last year but the Jets obviously have someone in the organization who had been impressed enough by him in the past to want a closer look now.

Aside from Garrett Wilson, nobody’s role among pass catchers on next year’s offense is particularly nailed down. Dalena will then have a chance to crack the rotation if he impresses in camp or if injuries give him a chance to move up to the top two units.

Realistically, though, Dalena looks like a long-shot who could be a practice squad or scout team player at best.

Scouting Jets quarterback Bailey Zappe

Over the last few months, we’ve been taking an in-depth look at some of the late season signings who are under contract for 2026, and futures signings after the end of the season. We continue today with quarterback Bailey Zappe, who signed a futures deal after the season.

The 26-year old Zappe is listed at 6’1″ and 220 pounds and was a fourth round pick out of Western Kentucky in 2022. Having set a number of NCAA records in college, Zappe has started nine games at the NFL level, winning four. He has passed for over 2,200 yards in his pro career so far, with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Background

Zappe was an unheralded high school recruit, rated as a zero-star prospect, so he ended up going to Houston Baptist. After a rocky first season that saw him throw 10 interceptions with just five touchdown passes, Zappe showed some improvement in 2018 as he had 23 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. However, the team had lost 16 of 18 games in his first two seasons.

In 2019, Zappe helped the team become more competitive as he threw for over 3,800 yards and 35 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. They ended up going 5-7 that year.

The 2020 season was truncated to just four games but Zappe threw 15 touchdowns and averaged over 450 passing yards in those games. At the end of the season, he opted to transfer to Western Kentucky, with his offensive coordinator and number one receiver joining him.

His career with the Hilltoppers got off to a sensational start as he had 424 yards and seven touchdowns in his first game. By the end of the year, Zappe had set an all-time NCAA record with almost 6,000 passing yards and 62 touchdown passes. His 426.2 yards per game career mark is also an all-time record.

Zappe earned some mid-round buzz after a decent showing at the 2022 scouting combine and was ultimately selected in the fourth round by the New England Patriots.

Having started off on the bench, Zappe got some early season playing time in relief of Mac Jones. He became the first rookie in the Super Bowl era to win and post a quarterback rating of over 100 in each of his first two starts. Those would prove to be the only two starts of his rookie year, though, as he ended up with a 71 percent completion percentage, 581 passing yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions. He had a career-high 309 passing yards in his second start against the Browns.

In 2023, he was initially released in final cuts but was retained on the practice squad and added to the active roster later. He ultimately made six starts, although he was less effective than he had been in his rookie year. He won two of the six starts as he had 1,272 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The following season saw Zappe released in final cuts again but this time the Patriots did not retain him. After spending time on the Chiefs’ practice squad, Zappe was poached by the Browns and started the season finale, in which he completed 16 of 31 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

In 2025, he once again started off with the Chiefs, for whom he attended training camp and played in preseason, then ended up in Cleveland. He was on the practice squad for the Browns and did not play all season.

The Jets signed Zappe to a futures deal after the season was over.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Zappe brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Zappe, who has below average size, isn’t renowned for his athletic ability either, but he isn’t a complete slouch. At the combine, he posted a 4.88 in the 40 yard dash, with below average explosiveness and agility numbers.

Arm Strength

Arm strength is regarded as one of Zappe’s weaknesses. He has had sporadic success on deep balls and although he throws a catchable ball that he gets plenty of air under it, he can struggle to get enough on his deep passes to hit downfield receivers in stride.

zappe4.gif

His longest touchdown at the NFL level is just 31 yards as seven of the 12 have come from in the red zone. He has also only completed one 50-yard pass at the pro level.

When he needs to get additional zip on a throw to get it outside the numbers or in a tight window, Zappe can do this if he has room to step into the throw.

zappe8.gif

Accuracy

As Zappe showed in his rookie year by completing over 70 percent of his passes, he can post a solid completion percentage at the pro level, albeit that he was in a game manager role. In subsequent appearances and preseason action, his percentages have been lower.

When he has time, Zappe can hit his receivers in stride, fit the ball in between defenders in traffic and put the ball into a spot where his intended target can make a play.

zappe6.gif

Often when a young quarterback struggles with accuracy, the issue isn’t that they can’t throw the ball to the right spot, it’s that the throw is late. This isn’t generally the case with Zappe who does show the ability to make anticipatory throws on time.

zappe3.gif

Under pressure

Like most young quarterbacks, Zappe’s numbers drop off when he is pressured. However, the drop-off isn’t as significant as it often will be. In fact, only two of his 14 career interceptions have come when he was under pressure as he has been praised for his poise and “calm eyes”.

Zappe was sacked 25 times in his six starts in 2023, suggesting he’s not very good at escaping pressure and more willing to take a sack than make a key mistake.

When he senses pressure, Zappe will step up into the pocket but does a good job of keeping his eyes up to look for opportunities rather than defaulting to scramble mode.

zappe7.gif

One thing that does need work, though, is that he often has passes batted down at the line, or – worse – tipped into the air.

He has fumbled six times in his career, losing four.

Footwork/Technique

Zappe has decent mechanics and a quick release, with good balance and the ability to throw on the move. Those mechanics can let him down when he is forced to rush, though.

zappe2.gif

He seems comfortable under center and in play-action with an ability to see the field despite having his back turned briefly to fake the hand-off.

Decision Making

Zappe doesn’t always stare down his primary option as he is capable of reading the field and going through his progressions to find the open man.

zappe9.gif

He does, however, also have a tendency to force the ball into traffic at times and can get burned in these situations.

zappe0.gif

Zappe has thrown two pick-sixes in his NFL career but both of these were when he wasn’t on the same page as his receiver rather than being bad decisions. This was a bad read, though, on a play where he should have led the back out towards the sideline. In that case you could say that the back read the coverage but Zappe failed to.

zappe5.gif

Mobility

Zappe isn’t much of a run threat, although he will take easy yardage when it’s there and does have six first downs and a touchdown as a rusher at the pro level.

zappe1.gif

In college, he had more success with six rushing touchdowns in his career. That included a 68-yard run back in 2018 as he was untouched on a read-option keeper. He ended up with 132 rushing yards that day.

Zappe does have some ability to move around in the pocket in order to keep a play alive long enough for someone to uncover.

zappe11.gif

Special teams

Zappe has not played a role on special teams at any level and would not be expected to in the NFL.

Scheme Fit

Zappe seems to be at his best in a quick passing game, which can include RPOs and play-action. At the time of writing, we don’t know who the Jets’ playcaller will be but, of course, this is an aspect of most modern offenses these days.

He has been a teammate of current Jets Mac Dalena, Liam Fornadel and Ochaun Mathis, along with restricted free agent Cam Jones.

Injuries

Zappe has been fortunate with injuries so far in his career, as he doesn’t appear to have missed any time or been limited.

Intangibles

Zappe is regarded as having a good football IQ. He scored a 35 in the Wonderlic at the 2022 scouting combine and was on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times while at Houston Baptist.

Having started off from humble beginnings, Zappe has shown good determination to get to this level and his teammates have expressed confidence in his poise and decision making abilities.

He is a player who always prepares well, even when he is not scheduled to be the starter.

Conclusions

Although Zappe is still only 26, it feels like the NFL has already collectively decided he’s a career-backup at best, rather than a potential fringe starter or something more. Nevertheless, it’s useful to have someone with starting experience in the organization as an option.

Last season underlines this, as the Jets were forced to call Brady Cook into unexpected action and found him to be overmatched in a way that a player with Zappe’s experience perhaps wouldn’t have been. Although they opted to stick with Cook rather than bring in a player like Zappe sooner, this was informed by the Jets being out of contention. In a similar situation earlier on in the season, you might be glad to have a Zappe type in the organization for emergencies.

In some areas, Zappe is limited, but in an offense that is tailored towards his strengths, he can hold the fort for a team for a game or two at this level and has a shot to stick around with the Jets in 2026, albeit probably as a number three and on the practice squad at best.

There are three reported finalists for the Jets’ open offensive coordinator job

The Jets parted ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand last week. Since that news broke, the team has begun the process of seeking a replacement. According to reports, the team is down to three candidates, Frank Reich, Darrell Bevell, and Greg Roman.

Former Chargers OC Greg Roman will be part of the Jets’ in-person interviews for an offensive coordinator early next week, per sources.

Frank Reich is the name that has generated the most buzz in connection with the Jets' offensive-coordinator vacancy, but keep an eye on Darrell Bevell. It wouldn't shock me if he gets the nod. Their plan was to narrow it to 3 finalists, as @JFowlerESPN reported Saturday. Greg…

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) February 2, 2026

All three of these coaches have a lot of experience leading NFL offenses. In many ways it seems like the Jets coaching staff will do a 180 from what we saw a year ago. Aaron Glenn delegated the defense to coordinator Steve Wilks while the Jets tried to strike gold hiring a first-time NFL playcaller to run the offense. In year two, Glenn is by all indications going to take on a more active role running the defense and wants a seasoned coach guiding his offense.

Of course, we need to wait until an official announcement is made. As always, there could be last minute changes. Most of the early buzz on the defensive side of the ball was on Wink Martindale, a coach with plenty of experience. Then at the last minute the Jets hired Brian Duker, a young coach who was not on the initial list of candidates the Jets rleased.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell have completed interviews for the New York Jets’ open offensive coordinator position. The purported favorite to get the job, Frank Reich, is reportedly on vacation. Perhaps his favorite status was not entirely accurate. In any event, we should be getting news as to the next Jets offensive coordinator any day now. Hopefully whomever it is will have more talent to work with than Tanner Engstrand did last year.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Jets fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Super Bowl LX is this coming Sunday.

2025 was a miserable season for the New York Jets and their fans. The team finished with a 3-14 record, which earned it the second pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Even though the Jets were far away from making the big game themselves, the Super Bowl has plenty of interest for the Jets and their fans.

Representing the AFC are the New England Patriots, one of the Jets’ most hated rivals. The Pats are seeking their seventh Super Bowl win in the last twenty-five year. On the other side are the Seattle Seahawks, a team that happens to be quarterbacked by Sam Darnold. Darnold was selected third overall in the NFL Draft by the Jets eight years ago. He has built a good career after a difficult three year tenure in New York that started his time as a professional.

This week in our SB Nation Reacts survey, we want you prediction. Who wins the Super Bowl? Will it be the Patriots taking him the sport’s ultimate prize once again or Darnold reaching the summit? Vote below. We will bring you the results later in the week.

The Jets have found Tanner Engstrand’s replacement as offensive coordinator. Long-time NFL coach Frank Reich will take the role per Adam Schefter.

Source: the Jets are hiring former Panthers and Colts HC Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator. Reich also was Stanford’s interim head coach last season, but now he returns to the NFL. pic.twitter.com/W8uN5VAsQn

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 4, 2026

Reich served as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2022 and the Carolina Panthers in 2023. He most recently spent the year as interim head coach at Stanford University in 2025. Prior to his head coaching gigs, Reich was the offensive coordinator of the (then-) San Diego Chargers from 2014 to 2015 and the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016 to 2017. The Eagles won the Super Bowl in his final year there behind backup quarterback Nick Foles.

He had a long playing career and was one of the greatest backup quarterbacks in history. His most notable moment as a player came in the 1992 Playoffs when he helped the Bufffalo Bills overcome a 35-3 deficit to beat the Houston Oilers.

Reich spent one season as a player with the Jets as the backup quarterback on Rich Kotite’s 1-15 team in 1996. Injuries to starter Neil O’Donnell led him to make seven starts that season. Reich was notably a teammate of current Jets head coach Aaron Glenn on that team.

What do you think of the Jets hiring Reich? Let us know in the comments.

Source: https://www.ganggreennation.com/new...e-hiring-frank-reich-as-offensive-coordinator

Frank Reich is a solid hire for the Jets. The guy has a proven track record as a playcaller and knows how to work with quarterbacks at various stages of development. His time with the Colts showed he can adapt his offense to different personnel - he made it work with Andrew Luck, then adjusted when they had Jacoby Brissett and later Carson Wentz.

The connection with Aaron Glenn from their playing days is interesting too. That shared history might help with communication and trust between the head coach and OC, which was clearly an issue last year based on those reports about coaches feeling blindsided.

As for the Zappe signing, it makes sense as a depth move. Having a guy with actual NFL starting experience as your QB3 is smart roster management. Last year showed what happens when you're forced to throw an unprepared backup into the fire. Zappe isn't going to win you games, but he's not going to completely implode either. He knows how to manage a game and protect the football for the most part.

The Super Bowl question is tough. Rooting for the Patriots is obviously out of the question, but it's hard not to feel conflicted about Darnold potentially winning it all after how things went in New York. I think most Jets fans would probably hold their nose and root for Sam at this point - at least he's not wearing a Patriots jersey.

Likes and dislikes of the Jets hiring Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator

The Jets have a new offensive coordinator. It is former Colts and Panthers head coach Frank Reich. Let’s discuss the good and the bad of this hire.

Likes:

It’s rare when the Jets hire a play caller who actually has a track record of success in the NFL. In the last twenty years, the Jets have hired ten men to call plays for them. Nine of them held the offensive coordinator title while one was a head coach who ran the offense. Five of the ten had no experience calling plays on the NFL level.

Of the five who had experience, two were Nathaniel Hackett and Adam Gase. The two were among the least effective offensive architects of their generation. Both Hackett and Gase had lucked into jobs coaching Hall of Fame quarterbacks, which they parlayed into plum gigs for other teams across the league. Marty Morinhinweg was best known for a disastrous stint as the Detroit Lions head coach under Matt Millen. Jeremy Bates was at one point viewed as an up and coming offensive mind. At the point the Jets promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2018, however, he was coming off a year as the team’s quarterbacks coach which followed a four year stint out of football. Of the veteran coaches the Jets have hired in the last two decades to oversee their offense, only Chan Gailey had anything resembling a quality track record.

Say what you will about Frank Reich. He does have a history of running quality offenses. In three of his five years as Colts head coach, Reich ran a top ten scoring offense. It’s more impressive when you consider how tumultuous the team’s quarterback situation was after the retirement of Andrew Luck during the preseason in 2019.

Prior to his stint with the Colts, Reich was the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles who won the Super Bowl with backup quarterback Nick Foles. Reich didn’t call the plays in Philadelphia. Head coach Doug Pederson did, but still Reich has to get some of the credit for that feat.

The reality is turning around the Jets offense will be a massive undertaking. There simply is no time for on the job training. Tanner Engstrand might be a good offensive coordinator one day. He certainly seems to have mastered the media relations side of things based on the outpouring of praise his work with the Jets received in 2025 for no discernible reason. But in his sole season running the Jets offense, he frequently seemed to be in over his head, unable to figure out how to use what minimal talent he had or understand situational play calling. On a team with better players and an experienced quarterback, you might be able to live with an offensive coordinator’s growing pains. To pull off a massive turnaround, you need a coach who knows what he’s doing on day one.

Simply put, the Jets needed someone with experience for this job, and Reich checks that box.

Dislikes:

Reich does have a record of success, but none of that success is recent.

He hasn’t even coached in the NFL for a full season from start to finish since 2021. He was fired by the Colts in season in 2022. Indianapolis finished 30th in scoring. Reich was promptly hired by Carolina in 2023 but fired before finishing his first season. The Panthers finished 31st in scoring. After sitting out 2024, Reich took over the head coaching job at Stanford University on an interim basis in 2025, guiding the Cardinal to a 4-8 record.

In context, it’s debatable how much blame Reich really deserves for any of these struggles. The Colts finally hit the wall with an aged Matt Ryan playing quarterback in 2022 after years in the quarterback wilderness. Indianapolis has struggled at the position even after Reich departed. The Panthers have been a notoriously dysfunctional franchise, and Reich’s role in the trade up for Bryce Young has been disputed. And it’s tough to blame Reich for not doing better than 4-8 with a Stanford team he inherited on the fly.

Of course it’s one thing to say that Reich isn’t really to blame for any of these issues. The reality remains that Reich hasn’t had any sort of success in five years. At 64 years old, you have to seriously ask whether his best days are behind him.

Looking at the three finalists the Jets interviewed for offensive coordinator, Reich, Darrell Bevell, and Greg Roman, you do see a lot of the experience the Jets need in an offensive coordinator. You don’t, however, see names that many other teams covet. Unless I’ve missed it or something has gone unreported, I don’t believe any of the serious candidates for this job got so much as a coordinator interview from another team in this cycle.

That’s just the way things are for the Jets at the moment. This is not a coveted destination. People with options don’t want to come to this team. The best hope is to hire a coach with a good track record but whose stock is low right now and hope he bounces back.

While Reich certainly won’t need on the job training, he isn’t a big enough offensive mind for his hiring to immediate turn around the perceptions about the Jets offense. Had the Jets landed Mike McDaniel, suddenly there would be a lot of confidence about things looking up. McDaniel wouldn’t consider the Jets right now, though. That’s where we are. This situation is too unstable for top choices to have any interest. And what we have in New York largely resembles the unstable circumstances where Reich failed in Indianapolis and Carolina.

A part of me wonders whether Greg Roman might have been a better fit. The Jets and Aaron Glenn have a lot of time to turn this offense around. Roman isn’t an elite coordinator by any stretch of the imagination. He is, however, a floor raiser. His ability to orchestrate a rushing attack has produced credible offenses without requiring top notch quarterback play. There have been a few rumors about Roman perhaps joining the staff in a lesser capacity so I guess we can keep an eye on that.

At the end of the day I would say Reich is a credible coach. He is a likely improvement on Engstrand, and has a much better pedigree than your typical Jets offensive coordinator. But the gravity he’s fighting will likely prove to be too much to overcome. The Jets got a quality coach, but they need a miracle worker (or short of that at least a top five offensive mind) to actually pull this off.

Which Frank Reich Will the Jets Get?

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 22: Head coach Frank Reich of the Stanford Cardinal looks on against the California Golden Bears in the third quarter at Stanford Stadium on November 22, 2025 in Stanford, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The New York Jets officially ended the soul searching portion of their offseason today, announcing the hire of Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator.

In a move that feels both like a safe veteran play and a massive gamble, Head Coach Aaron Glenn has effectively handed Reich the keys to the kingdom. Glenn made it clear during the search that he wanted a head coach of the offense someone who could operate with total autonomy while Glenn refocuses on calling the defensive plays.

But for Jets fans, the question isn’t about Reich’s resume. It’s about which version of the man is stepping off the plane at Newark.

To understand the anxiety at One Jets Drive, you have to look at the two polar opposite outcomes of Reich’s recent career.

The Quarterback Whisperer (2017-2020) This is the Reich the Jets are praying for. This is the architect who helped Doug Pederson guide Nick Foles to a Super Bowl ring. This is the man who took a washed Philip Rivers in 2020 and squeezed out an 11-5 playoff season. This version of Reich is Multiple in the best way he adapts his scheme to his players, uses RPOs to protect his QB, and leans on a physical run game to set up deep shots.

The Scheme Rigid Veteran (2022-2023) This is the Reich who was fired mid season in back to back years. In Carolina, he was criticized for trying to force Bryce Young into a static pocket system that didn’t fit the rookie’s traits. The offense became predictable, horizontal, and frankly boring. This version of Reich prioritizes the system over the personnel, resulting in an offense that ranks in the bottom five of every meaningful category.

If Reich returns to his roots, the biggest winners are Breece Hall(If we bring him back. Please come back!) and Garrett Wilson.

The Run Game: Reich’s best years in Indy featured a dominant Jonathan Taylor. With Breece Hall, Reich has a weapon that can execute the Wide Zone scheme that defines his best work.

The X Factor: Garrett Wilson is the perfect rhythm receiver for Reich’s West Coast hybrid. If Reich can get back to the Triangle Reads and Mesh concepts that made the 2017 Eagles so dangerous, Wilson could see a career high in targets.

Now that we are at the end of the season, it’s time to update you on former Jets players. how they fared during the 2025 season and their contractual status heading into next year. We will cover this in five parts, looking at offensive and defensive players from AFC teams this week, then NFC teams next week before closing with a look at special teamers. We start today with a review of ex-Jets offensive players who were on AFC teams in 2025.

Bills:

Running back Ty Johnson was once again a useful contributor for the Bills as he rushed for 200 yards, caught 24 passes and scored five total touchdowns. He remains under contract.

Wide receiver Elijah Moore eventually asked for and was granted his release after struggling to crack the Bills’ rotation. He contributed 136 yards and a touchdown on 15 touches.

Another receiver, Mecole Hardman, was brought in and played two games but didn’t register a catch. He has been brought back on a futures deal.

Dolphins:

Quarterback Zach Wilson had a disappointing year that saw the number two, Quinn Ewers, get a chance to start ahead of him at the end of the season. In four games, Wilson completed six of 11 passes for 32 yards and is now a free agent.

Also: Offensive linemen Obinna Eze and Yodny Cajuste spent the year on injured reserve. Both are out of contract but Eze could be back as an exclusive rights free agent. Another offensive lineman, Carter Warren, was signed to a futures deal after the season.

Patriots:

Offensive lineman Morgan Moses started every game for New England at right tackle. He gave up two sacks and had eight penalties.

Also: Wide receiver Brandon Smith was added to the practice squad. We will see if he gets a futures deal after the season but he has not seen any action. Running back Donovan Edwards was a late addition to the active roster and is under contract for next year despite also not playing. Running back Jonathan Ward was on the practice squad earlier in the year but did not play.

Titans:

Offensive lineman Blake Hance heads to free agency after playing in four games with one start while another offensive lineman, Corey Levin, is also a free agent. He played in every game, starting two.

Also: Quarterback Trevor Siemian and wide receiver Lance McCutcheon were on the practice squad but did not see action and were not retained.

Colts:

Quarterback Brett Rypien was on and off roster and practice squad but ultimately did not play for the Colts and ended the year in Minnesota.

Also: Wide receiver DJ Montgomery spent the year on injured reserve and is now an unrestricted free agent.

Jaguars:

Offensive lineman Chuma Edoga played in 14 games, starting two, this season. He remains under contract for next year.

Texans:

Guard Laken Tomlinson was eventually released in December after playing in 10 games with seven starts. He ended up with Baltimore. Tomlinson allowed three sacks and had one penalty in those games.

Wide receiver Braxton Berrios ultimately only played in four games. He caught six passes for 37 yards in those games, while also contributing on special teams.

Tight end Brenden Bates was poached from the Browns and with the team for five weeks but is now back in Cleveland. He caught two passes in three appearances.

Steelers:

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers got Pittsburgh into the playoffs as he completed 66 percent of his passes for over 3,300 yards with 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. However, he played poorly in a first-round exit and is now a free agent again.

Offensive lineman Calvin Anderson remains under contract for next year despite playing just 23 snaps in nine games.

Also: McCutcheon was on the practice squad but has since been released.

Bengals:

Quarterback Joe Flacco was a late addition to the pro bowl games but his time in Cincinnati ultimately wasn’t very successful as he lost five of six starts despite some early success. He ended up with 13 touchdowns passes and only four interceptions with the Bengals. He’s now a free agent.

Rypien also saw action earlier in the year, albeit that he was just in for three snaps and sacked on his lone dropback.

Browns:

Prior to getting traded, Flacco had struggled with six interceptions in four games, three of which the Browns had lost. He had just two touchdown passes.

Wide receiver Malachi Corley is an exclusive rights free agent so could return after playing in 13 games with five starts. He had over 200 yards on 24 touches but is still waiting for that first career touchdown.

Bates was reclaimed from the Texans and ended up starting in three of his six appearances for Cleveland. He caught two passes.

Ravens:

The Ravens had Tomlinson on their practice squad but he didn’t see action and wasn’t retained after the season. Ward also spent time on their practice squad.

Chiefs:

Wide receiver Jason Brownlee was only targeted once in six games and ended up back on the practice squad. He was signed to a futures deal after the season though.

The Chiefs also re-signed tackle Esa Pole and he was called into action down the stretch as he made four starts at left tackle. He allowed one sack and had three penalties. Pole remains under contract for next year.

Raiders:

Quarterback Geno Smith led the league with 17 interceptions and was sacked a league-high 55 times as he lost 13 of his 15 starts this year. He remains under contract after having passed for over 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Running back Raheem Mostert had 62 rushing yards in his first appearance of the season but was mostly used on special teams after that. He ended up with 174 yards from scrimmage.

Chargers:

Offensive lineman Mekhi Becton suffered through a lot of injuries again but was able to start 14 games and only allowed three sacks. He had six penalties.

Tackle Austin Deculus saw plenty of action too, as the Chargers had plenty of injuries on the line. He made five starts and allowed seven sacks with five penalties.

Tight end Tyler Conklin had a disappointing impact despite also starting five games. He caught just seven passes for 101 yards in 13 games.

Broncos:

Moore ended up on the Broncos’ practice squad and was active for the AFC title game, in which he caught one pass.

As ever, this list is intended to be exhaustive, but if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! Another day, another drama for the New York Jets. Jets defensive lineman Harrison Phillips told Rich Cimini that Aaron Glenn “inherited a very cancerous, truculent group” of players last season. Oof. Phillips went on to express his belief that Glenn had what it takes to turn this situation around. I have my doubts, but for better or worse, Glenn remains the head coach of the Jets. Let’s hope Phillips turns out to be correct in his belief in Glenn.

We continue today with a review of ex-Jets defensive players who were on AFC teams in 2025.

As ever, this list is intended to be exhaustive, but if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments.

Bills:

Cornerback Brandon Codrington only played 10 defensive snaps before being released to the practice squad and hasn’t been retained.

Linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo played on special teams in his one appearance but signed a futures deal having ended the season on the practice squad.

Defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis had 13 tackles in six games as a rotational lineman but is now out of contract.

Dolphins:

Safety Ashtyn Davis started 12 games and had a career-high 65 tackles. He also broke up four passes and had a forced fumble and an interception.

Defensive back Elijah Campbell played in 10 games but was only on the field for 16 defensive snaps.

Another defensive back, Kendall Sheffield, was elevated twice from the practice squad and made two appearances, with one tackle. He has not been retained.

Patriots:

Defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III has played in six games, including three (so far) in the playoffs. He had eight tackles and a quarterback hit in a reserve role.

Browns:

Defensive tackle Shelby Harris played every game but started just five times as he had 32 tackles, four pass breakups and a sack.

Defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse ended up with the Giants having failed to generate any stats in five appearances that saw him mostly on special teams.

Also: Linebacker Mark Robinson was on the practice squad for a week in December but did not play.

Steelers:

Cornerback Brandin Echols and safety Chuck Clark both contributed on defense for the Steelers. Echols had some big plays despite just starting three games as he ended up with 48 tackles, six pass breakups, a sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He intercepted another pass in the playoffs.

Clark played in 15 games, starting five. He had 51 tackles and three pass breakups along with another six tackles and a pass breakup in the postseason. He is a free agent but Echols remains under contract for 2026.

Robinson also spent time with the Steelers before ending up in Cleveland. He played two games, solely on special teams.

Also: Defensive lineman Domenique Davis was eventually released from injured reserve.

Bengals:

Defensive tackle Mike Pennel ended up in Kansas City but did first play in eight games with Cincinnati, recording 15 tackles.

Ravens:

The Ravens added defensive end Carl Lawson to their practice squad, and he played in one game, recording one tackle. He was not retained.

Titans:

The Titans haven’t had any ex-Jets on defense all year.

Colts:

The Colts traded for Sauce Gardner but he played just four times for them, missing the rest of the games with a calf issue. He had 16 tackles and three pass breakups but Indianapolis won just one of the four games.

Texans:

Folorunso Fatukasi and Sheldon Rankins were reunited on the defensive interior in Houston although Fatukasi was limited to one start in four total appearances. He had eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Rankins started every game and had 35 tackles, three sacks, nine quarterback hits and a huge fumble return for a touchdown. Both he and Fatukasi are now out of contract.

With Fatukasi out, the Texans brought in Leki Fotu as reinforcements and he had three tackles in two games off the practice squad but wasn’t retained.

Defensive back Jalen Mills was brought back and made four appearances with one start before ending up in Detroit. He had four tackles and an interception.

Jaguars:

The Jaguars are the only other AFC team that didn’t have any ex-Jets on defense this season.

Broncos:

John Franklin-Myers heads to free agency after another solid year that saw him record 7.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits. He ended up starting 15 games and recording 25 tackles.

Also: Defensive back Tanner McCalister spent time on the practice squad but wasn’t retained.

Raiders:

Before ending up in Houston, Fotu played in six games with the Raiders, four of which were starts. He had eight tackles and a sack.

Jamal Adams revived his career to an extent by taking on a linebacker role, although he is now a free agent. He started four of 17 games and had 45 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.

Linebacker Jamin Davis was signed to the practice squad and inked a futures deal after the season. He had three tackles in two games off the practice squad, one of which he started.

Chiefs:

After being acquired from the Jets, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi played a significant role with 15 appearances including 11 starts. He had 16 tackles.

Pennel was also brought back after leaving the Bengals and he made eight appearances with two starts and had 11 tackles. Both Nnadi and Pennel are now free agents.

Chargers:

Linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips mostly contributed on special teams but did start one game and had 37 tackles despite playing just 82 defensive snaps. He added a sack and a fumble recovery and also saw action on defense in the wild card game. He is now a free agent.

Finally, safety Marcus Maye was brought in and made a late-season appearance in which he was credited with five tackles. He was not retained.

Check back here next week when we’ll be covering ex-Jets special teamers and how they’ve performed on their current teams…

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets made two key hires yesterday. They brought in Frank Reich as offensive coordinator and Karl Dunbar as defensive line coach. Given the current drawbacks to signing on with the Jets, these hirings likely represent the best scenario a Jets fan could reasonably hope for. Dunbar in particular is an exciting addition to the staff. He is one of the best in the business as a defensive line coach.

After a somewhat tumultuous ride, the Jets seem to actually be making some positive moves this offseason. The coaching staff seems improved, though there is still plenty of work to be done there with multiple assistant coaching positions still unfilled. If the Jets can manage a measured approach to free agency, adding talent without getting saddled with bloated contracts, then a 2026 draft with four picks in the top 44 sets the team up for significant progress in 2026. We’ll see if this team is able to avoid crippling mistakes in the days ahead, but for now, the arrow is tentatively pointing up.
