New York Jets Flight Connections 12/24/25

imagn-24784855.jpg

The New York Jets have placed quarterback Justin Fields on season ending injured reserve. In all likelihood this ends Fields’ time with the Jets. He will almost certainly be cut in the offseason, ending another sorry chapter in the seemingly infinite hit parade of failed Jets quarterbacks. Fields will move on and try to rebuild his career as a backup quarterback. The Jets will move on and try to finally find a worthy starting quarterback. May both be successful in their endeavors.

Scouting Jets tight end Jelani Woods

imagn-19246250.jpg

The Jets claimed tight end Jelani Woods at the start of the season and he has been seeing action in the past few games for the team. Today we break Woods down in detail.

The 27-year old Woods is listed at 6’7″ and 253 pounds and was a third round pick out of Virginia in 2022. After a promising rookie season in which he caught 25 passes, including three touchdowns, Woods did not play in 2023 and 2024 due to injury. The Jets claimed him after final cuts and he has played in three games for them, albeit without recording a catch so far.

Background

Woods was a pro-style quarterback in high school, but he redshirted his first year at Oklahoma State, during which he was used as a scout team tight end. That went well enough that the coaches proposed a position change, which Woods agreed to.

Over the next three seasons, Woods was primarily used as a blocker but did catch 31 passes in 34 games, racking up over 350 yards and three touchdowns. In 2018 and 2019, he was named as an all-Big 12 honorable mention.

Ahead of the 2021 season, Woods opted to transfer to Virginia as a graduate transfer and they expanded his role. He racked up 44 catches for 598 yards and eight touchdowns and earned all-ACC first team recognition.

Having announced he would enter the 2022 NFL draft, Woods improved his stock with some good workout numbers and was widely considered a potential day two pick. The Colts selected him in round three and he played in 15 games as a rookie, starting two.

In those games, Woods caught 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. That included a game against the Chiefs where he had two touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Expectations were high that Woods would build on that, but he missed the entire 2023 season and didn’t play in 2024 either due to injury. In preseason this year, he caught seven passes for 75 yards in three games but it wasn’t enough to earn him a spot on the 53, so when he was waived, the Jets claimed him.

With the Jets considered weak at the tight end position, it was hoped Woods could provide an upgrade but he’s been unable to crack the rotation. Until last week, he had been a healthy scratch for most of the season, having played just one offensive snap.

However, in the past two weeks, he has had a chance to contribute due to Mason Taylor’s injury. Despite not catching a pass yet, Woods has had some positive plays as a blocker.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Woods brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Woods is an imposing figure, who looks the part, although it’s been said he could perhaps benefit from adding some weight. He has long arms and a huge wingspan, albeit that his hands are a below average size.

His athletic profile is tremendous. He made headlines at the combine when he posted a 4.61 time in the 40-yard dash and posted 24 bench press reps, both of which put him in the top-two of all combine participants at his position in 2022.

He then did the explosiveness and agility drills at his pro day and again posted elite numbers with his vertical and agility numbers being even better than those of Kyle Pitts.

Usage

Woods has the size to feature as a legitimate inline tight end and that’s been his primary role at the NFL level, although he has plenty of experience and production in the slot and out wide.

In college, he had about a 40:40:20 ratio in terms of his inline, slot and wide reps. He also rushed twice for six yards.

As noted, he was a pocket passer in college.

Downfield threat

Woods is not a deep threat in terms of getting down the field but he has the ability to stretch the field down the seam with his long, lumbering strides.

jelani9.gif

His size makes him a good back shoulder or jump ball option but he only had a handful of downfield catches in college, having more success underneath and on intermediate routes.

Routes

As a route runner, Woods doesn’t really have the kind of burst or quick cut ability that is going to enable him to separate at the NFL level, but he is effective at using his big body to box out defenders or create natural separation by winning a leverage advantage and keeping them on his hip.

jelani0.gif

His releases and breaks are functional enough and he has plenty of success on crossing routes. Clearly this was a developing area of his skill-set as he entered the league.

Hands

Being somewhat new to the position, especially when considering the two years he missed due to injury and what that did to stymie his progress, it’s not surprising that Woods can look raw as a pass catcher at times with bobbles or body catches and some concentration drops.

jelani5.gif

Having said that, he shows flashes of real potential in some of his highlights, adjusting to the flight of the ball in the air, snatching it down with his large catch radius and regularly displaying strong hands to hold onto the ball with a defender draped all over him. He’s also made a few highlight-reel catches:

jelani4.gif

Red zone

The majority of Woods’ 11 touchdowns at the collegiate level, and all four of his touchdowns at the NFL level, including one in preseason, have come in the red zone as his size makes him a viable option on fades or finding space on play-action passes.

jelani1.gif

After the catch

In college, Woods was an effective weapon after the catch as he showcased an ability to run over smaller defenders.

jelani6.gif

He’s been less effective at breaking tackles at the pro level, where there are fewer defensive players he would have as much of a size difference over. However, he is effective at catching the ball and turning upfield and does run through arm tackles at times.

jelani3.gif

While he’s not elusive or a creative runner, if you get it to him short of the marker, his size and strength make him hard to stop from picking up the first down as he can drive players back in contact and fall forward at the end of a run.

He has had the ball stripped away from him a few times after making a catch, both in the pros and at the college level.

Run blocking

Woods was primarily a blocking specialist at Oklahoma State, but his performance grades on analytical sites such as Pro Football Focus tended to be below average throughout his college career.

At the NFL level, he’s established himself well in this area, though, with strength at the point of attack and an aggressive nature that sees him attack his blocks and play to the whistle.

jelani2.gif

His primary weakness in this area is that he can play with a narrow base at times, but adding further strength since becoming a pro will have helped him in that area.

Since getting playing time with the Jets, Woods has acquitted himself well as a run blocker as he had a key block on Isaiah Davis’ 24-yard touchdown run in the Jaguars game, and a couple of other good inline blocks.

Pass blocking

Woods hasn’t been employed as a pass blocker much at the NFL level yet and it’s an area where he struggled at times in college, allowing three sacks.

On this play, he pulls across the formation but fails to get in front of the pass rusher and allows a pressure.

jelani11.gif

Physicality

Woods uses his size well in the aggressive nature of his blocking, when running routes and as a ball carrier.

He has good numbers on contested catches and is strong at the catch-point, although he needs to be more careful about not pushing off.

jelani7.gif

Special teams

Woods only has limited experience on special teams, although he had an effective double-team block on Isaiah Williams’ 42-yard kickoff return in the Saints game.

Blocking on the kick return unit has been his primary role but he also contributed in punt protection in college.

He shows good aggression to get after his man on this kick return blocking assignment.

jelani12.gif

Instincts

Woods’ previous experience as a quarterback has helped him become adept at learning offensive systems and adapting to new schemes, with his coaches at Oklahoma State praising his football IQ.

On the field, he has a knack for reading coverages and finding gaps in the defense.

jelani8.gif

He had a false start in a preseason game, but that’s been his only penalty at the NFL level in regular or preseason action.

At Oklahoma State, he was named as an all-Big 12 academic second team selection in 2020 and then at Virginia, having already graduated, he was named as a 2021 ACC all-academic selection. He was also selected to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

Attitude

Woods deserves credit for his dedication to get back onto the field after two tough injury-plagued seasons. He worked hard to rehab and was said to have a calm approach to the uphill climb he faced to return to the Colts rotation in 2025.

His teammate Mo-Alie Cox specifically cited his “contagious energy” and “dog mentality” in terms of what he brings to the locker room and practice field.

Woods’ on-field discipline has been solid recently. After committing eight penalties in three years with the Cowboys, he had no penalties at Virginia and only has one at the NFL level, in a preseason game.

Injuries

Injuries weren’t a major concern for Woods in college, or in his first season as he missed just two games due to a shoulder injury.

However, he suffered a pulled hamstring in OTAs ahead of his second season, which he reinjured in training camp. Then when he was ready to return from that he tore his other hamstring and ended up spending the entire year on injured reserve.

He was healthy at the start of training camp in 2024, but then suffered a significant turf toe injury in preseason which ended up sidelining him for the entire season again after surgery.

Scheme fit

As noted, Woods is quick to pick up systems and versatile enough to play various roles. However, he hasn’t been able to earn any significant playing time with Andrew Beck and Stone Smartt seemingly ahead of him behind the starters Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert.

He has been a teammate of current Jets Adonai Mitchell, Khalil Herbert and Sam Womack while with the Colts.

Conclusions

When the Jets acquired Woods, this was a pickup that excited the fanbase, who were expecting him to be an upgrade over the disappointing Ruckert. However, Ruckert has had his best season this year and recently earned a two-year extension. This, together with Taylor’s emergence, has meant there aren’t many reps available for the likes of Woods on offense.

Woods is out of contract at the end of the season, but so are Beck and Smartt, so it will be interesting to see who from this trio is back.

The hope when the Jets got Woods was that he was a player with untapped potential, which seems to fit in with the profile of the kinds of players they have tried to bring in this year, albeit with mixed results.

With his solid contributions as a blocker, Woods has already shown that he’s a capable player to fill in at the tight end position, but it will have been frustrating to him and the team that he hasn’t had a chance to build on the pass catching promise of his rookie season, for the third year in a row.

Taylor might be back this week so Woods may unfortunately never get that chance unless they make a concerted effort to involve him in the last two games. Even if they do, Woods will likely need to split opportunities with Smartt so he could be a long-shot to stick around.

Mason Taylor and Will McDonald will miss Jets’ Week 17 game against the Patriots

imagn-27766723.jpg

The Jets are big underdogs for their home finale against the New England Patriots in Week 17. Head coach Aaron Glenn announced the team will be without two starters in the game due to injury.

Rookie TE Mason Taylor (neck) and DE Will McDonald (knee) ruled out for Sunday against the Patriots. Aaron Glenn had expressed hope that Taylor would be back this week, but he will miss his third straight game. #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) December 26, 2025

With the season close to the end, there isn’t much of a need to the team to put injured players on the field. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more banged up players stashed on injured reserve in the days ahead. That will allow the Jets to call up players from the practice squad. Practice squad player contracts expire at the conclusion of the final game of the season, while players on the 53 man roster remain under contract with the team after the regular season ends.

Of the two, losing Taylor probably has the bigger long-term impact just because he is a rookie who could use the game reps to aid his development.

Beating New England will be a tough task that likely has become tougher.

Jets vs. Patriots: Game Time, TV, Announcers, Online Streaming, and More

imagn-27582180.jpg

FOX has a doubleheader this week while CBS will show a single game to each region.

If you live in the New York area, you will see:

Patriots at Jets early on FOX

Giants at Raiders late on CBS

Eagles at Bills late on FOX

The Jets and the Patriots are scheduled for a 1:00 pm kickoff from MetLife Stadium. The game will be shown on FOX with Adam Amin and Drew Brees on the call.

Despite the Jets being eliminated from Playoff contention, this game will be shown to more of the nation than the rest of the Jets games we have seen in December. That is likely in part due to the relevance the game has for the Patriots’ Playoff seeding and in part because the extra slate of Christmas games reduced the number of options of Sunday games the networks had to show.

This game will be distributed widely through New England and the Northeast along with wide stretches of the Mountain region. Broncos Country in particular will see the game with Denver battling the Pats for the one seed n the AFC.

If the game is shown in your region, you can stream it on the Fox Sports app (with a cable log in) or on your tablet and/or mobile device on NFL+. If the game is not shown in your region, you can stream it on NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube and YouTube TV. Separate subscriptions are required for each option.

To see the Sunday games that will be shown in your region, go to 506sports.com.

The entire nation will see Bears at 49ers Sunday night on NBC and Rams at Falcons Monday night on ESPN.

Christmas Week Jets Mock Draft

imagn-27875231.jpg

Before we get the Tank Bowl on Sunday between the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders, let’s take a look at what the Jets draft could look like if they remain at 4th overall. For this mock draft I’ve used the PFF simulator, and all picks are with other teams selecting in mind.

Round 1, 4th Overall: Rueben Bain Jr, EDGE, Miami

Well, the Jets lost out on the top two quarterbacks in this draft class. The Raiders selected Fernando Mendoza at two, and the Browns got Dante Moore at three. The Jets needed to pivot. While the offense is a mess, the defense may be even worse. That starts with the Jets’ pass rush, which has the 2nd fewest sacks in the league.

Rueben Bain Jr. is as elite as they come off the edge. He has five sacks in his last two games, 10 for the season, and a 15.3% pressure rate. Bain’s most impressive game of the season, without a doubt, was his eight pressure, three sack game against Texas A&M in the playoff. Just a masterful performance.

It should also be noted that Bain is 7th in the NCAA among EDGE, with a minimum 50% of snaps, in run defense grade. That’s a much needed skill set for the Jets, who’ve struggled to contain the run on the EDGE for years now.

Bain doesn’t have the numbers that jump off the page as a top 5 pick. However, they are well above average, and he’s an athletic freak. At 22 years old on Week 1 next year, Bain will be among the youngest EDGEs in the NFL with sky high potential.

Round 1, 18th Overall: Denzel Boston, WR, Washington

With the pick the Jets received from the Colts for Sauce Gardner, Glenn and Mougey will look to find Garrett Wilson a partner. Denzel Boston provides a near complete opposite skill set to Wilson, which should be a nice change of pace.

Boston is 6 foot 4 and can jump out of a building. He’s 10 for 13 in contested targets this season, a conversion rate of 76.9%. If that wasn’t enough to prove his solid hands, he has just two drops on the season, a 3.1% drop rate. Boston also has a higher yards per route run than Jordyn Tyson.

The only major concern with Boston is that he came up small in the biggest games of Washington’s season. He had only 25 receiving yards against Oregon, though he did have two TDs in the game. He also had just 26 receiving yards against Ohio State.

The good news is that Boston would likely draw CB2 his entire tenure with the Jets thanks to Garrett Wilson, which should open the door for him, especially in the red zone.

Round 2, 36th Overall: A’Mauri Washington, DT, Oregon

This is high for a run stuffing DT, but given the Jets massive need there, it’s hard to pass up a player of A’Mauri Washington’s ability.

Washington is an athletic freak, and the hope is that he develops into a better pass rusher in the NFL. However, that’s never going to be a big part of his game. He had just two sacks this season and a 7.7% pressure rate. If he maintains a pressure rate around 8% in the NFL, that’d be a massive win for a team drafting Washington for his run stuffing ability.

Washington has an 8.3% run stop rate. That also is not a number that jumps off the page. However, he does come with an 81.5 run defense grade, 11th among Power 4 DTs this season. He’d get a year as a developmental run stuffer learning next to Harrison Phillips, with the chance to get big snaps as the season goes on.

Round 2, 45th Overall: AJ Haulcy, S, LSU

The overhaul of the Jets defense continues. Malachi Moore has impressed and will return as a starter next season, but the Jets defense desperately needs a ball hawk at the back end, and AJ Haulcy may be able to fill that void.

AJ Haulcy has eight interceptions in his last two seasons for LSU and only three TDs allowed. He had an 88.8 coverage grade this season, 8th best among safeties in the country, with a minimum 50% of snaps.

For a Jets team that has had issues with coverage over the middle all year, Haulcy would provide a stabilizing force with a chance to make game-changing interceptions. That’s something they’ve sorely lacked this season as they’ve set the record with 15 consecutive games without an interception.

Round 4, 104th Overall: Antonio Williams, WR, Clemson

The Jets need much more than one WR. In the fourth round they turn their attention to the slot and special teams with Clemson’s Antonio Williams. A gadget player with special teams experience, Williams could be a nice developmental add for the Jets whom they hope would eventually win the slot WR job but could provide cover on Special Teams in the meantime.

Round 4, 139th Overall: DJ Campbell, Guard, Texas

A three-year starter for Texas, DJ Campbell has improved every year. This past season he allowed just one sack and a pressure rate of just 4.1%. Campbell can compete for a starting guard spot in camp, but if he ends up a backup in year one that’s fine. He has a chance to be a long-term answer at the position with proper development/

Round 6, 202nd Overall: Jalon Daniels, QB, Kansas

Jalon Daniels is an older QB prospect. He’ll turn 24 midway through his rookie season. However, he has all the athletic tools to succeed in the NFL. An elite athlete with a rocket for an arm, Daniels is a lottery ticket. He performed okay for Kansas this season with 22 TDs, seven interceptions, 7.9 yards per attempt, and 550 yards and four TDs on the ground, though he did fumble an astonishing 10 times.

Obviously, turnovers are a big issue, and so is his accuracy, with just a 61% completion rate. Odds are Daniels is at best a backup QB or potentially even a position change candidate. But in the 6th round the potential is enough to give him a chance, and if he flames out there’s no harm.

Round 6, 209th Overall: Kyle Louis, LB, Pittsburgh

The Jets have a massive need at LB, both starting and in depth. Kyle Louis was Pitt’s do-it-all LB. He had a 22.1% pressure rate as a blitzer, he had a 10.3% stop rate as a run defender, and he had two interceptions and three pass breakups in coverage.

Not an elite athlete and small at just 6 foot 1 and 220 pounds, Louis probably projects more as a backup and special teams player then as a linebacker. But he’s performed enough that he’s earned a shot to try and win a roster spot on an NFL team.

Round 7, 218th Overall: Parker Brailsford, Center, Alabama

The Jets continue taking shots on the interior. Josh Myers isn’t a long term answer at center, as he was one of the worst in the NFL in 2025. Even with a contract extension he’s not guaranteed a starting year or a roster spot beyond 2026.

Brailsford, who’s been good in pass protection, but struggled in run blocking, can compete for a roster spot as a rookie with eyes on potentially replacing Myers in 2027.

Round 7, 251st Overall: Dean Connors, RB, Houston

Connors has shown to be explosive with 21 runs of 10+ yards, and he is a decent receiver with over 230 receiving yards this season. It helps that he plays special teams. It’s unlikely he makes the team with the Jets likely to return the trio of Hall, Davis, and Allen. But if he shows he has special teams value it’s not impossible. If nothing else, having an explosive big play threat on your practice squad is never a bad thing.

Round 7, 253rd Overall: Gracen Halton, DT, Oklahoma

Halton has been a rotational piece on the Oklahoma defensive line the last two years. He has excelled in that role. He has a run defense grade of 86.9, a run stop rate over 10%, a pressure rate over 10%, and five sacks this season.

So why is he still available at the very end of the draft? He’s small at 6 foot 2 and 292 pounds. He’s not an athletic freak that teams look for on their defensive line either. But the Jets have no depth at DT, so Halton has a chance to show that his college numbers are no fluke and potentially earn playing time.

New York Jets NFL Draft order 2026: Updated 1st-round pick in Week 17

imagn-27894528.jpg

The afternoon games in Week 17 had a massive impact on the top of the NFL Draft order, including the top two picks. The Giants came into Week 17 with a 2-13 record, a nine-game losing streak, and holding the first overall pick, and then beat down the Raiders, giving up the No. 1 spot in the process.

The beatdown the Jets suffered at the hands of their division rival Patriots shouldn’t hurt New York’s first-round position — but it’s not going to launch them into the No. 1 spot, either. The loss drops New York to 3-13 on the season, and bumps them up to the third overall pick, while the Cleveland Browns drop all the way to No. 6 after pulling off a win over the Steelers, snapping a four-game losing streak.

The Jets also hold the Colts’ first-round pick from the Sauce Gardner trade, and after the Colts’ Week 17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, that pick now sits at No. 18.

Here’s the current draft order, updated after Sunday’s late afternoon slate of games in Week 17.

New York Jets Flight Connections 12/29/25

The New York Jets played one of the worst games in the history of this wretched franchise yesterday when they lost to the New England Patriots, 42 – 10. The Patriots scored a touchdown on each of their first six drives. The Jets looked like they had already checked out on the season. Fortunately for Jets fans they will actually check out next Sunday after they play the Buffalo Bills.

This season has been worse than the Kotite years. At least those teams had talent that was hidden by a historically inept head coach. This team is talentless with a historically inept head coach. A good couple of drafts the next two years and a good head coach hire could turn things around quickly, but with Woody Johnson running the show, who believes that will happen?

Aaron Glenn’s job should be in jeopardy after the latest Jets debacle

imagn-27893894.jpg

I try not to be overly reactionary in my takes on this site. The easiest thing in the world is to give some scorching hot take about how the coach should be fired when the Jets are playing poorly, and the fanbase is angry.

There are some realities to the current Jets situation:

The team was never expected to be good this season.

Making the Playoffs was not a realistic expectation.

The season could not be judged solely on wins and losses.

And perhaps most significantly:

None of this is Aaron Glenn’s fault.

Glenn inherited a team trying to climb out of the wreckage of a disastrous bet that the Jets were close to winning a Super Bowl and that Aaron Rodgers and big name veterans were the last pieces of the puzzle to get there.

Entering his first year, the Jets had holes all over the roster. They also had a quarter of their salary cap dedicated to players who were no longer on the roster. Former general manager Joe Douglas put a lot of cap hits on the credit card trying to maximize the last two years, and the bill came due.

The quality of the roster has deteriorated over the course of the season. This was in part due to the team trading two of its star players for Draft picks. Injuries have also created attrition for a team that didn’t have much depth to begin with.

In some ways, this season is similar to 2021, Saleh's first year as HC — lots of roster churning by the #Jets. They've used 77 players, second-most in NFL and Jets' most since '21, per NFL.

2025: 77
2024: 75
2023: 75
2022: 66
2021: 87

Amid the Jets' criticism, there's one thing to keep in mind: 18 of the 47 players who dressed yesterday weren't on the opening-day 53. That includes seven of the 17 players who saw action on defense — the definition of patchwork. #Jets

That’s a long way to preface everything I’m about to say, but I think it’s important to say. This team’s issues in 2025 go far beyond Aaron Glenn. Any coach would be dealing with them, and the results would likely not be good.

So please know that I am aware of the challenges Glenn faces.

With that said, it cuts both ways. We can say it isn’t only about wins and losses. That means a hard fought loss where the other team’s superior talent takes over in the fourth quarter can’t be treated the same as the catastrophic December the Jets have suffered.

All-time bad.

Worst December point differentials in NFL history
2025 Jets -107
1960 Bears -106⁰1990 Patriots -104⁰2019 Panthers -98
1990 Browns -98

I know the Jets have a bad roster, but they aren’t the first team in NFL history to be stuck playing practice squad level players in December.

It’s important for a young team to play its best football late in the season. Early in the year, inexperience shows. After a season full of reps, this should be the point where we start to see progress. Instead, we got what was objectively the worst December performance in the century plus history of the league.

At times like this we have to ask ourselves a question. Do the roster challenges mean that Aaron Glenn cannot be judged in any way shape or form? Can we just accept the Jets playing some of the worst football the NFL has ever seen?

I would say the answer is no. I don’t think it’s fair to expect a lot of wins at this point. In fact, I’d even say we have to accept that the Jets will be blown out in some games. But we should also see some weeks where the team overperforms its talent level.

A good coach can’t turn a terrible roster into a good team, but coaching should make things better than they would be otherwise. Let me ask this. Is there any aspect of this Jets team that is currently better than it would be if Aaron Glenn was not the head coach? It’s tough to build a case for a yes answer.

Say what you will about the current talent deficit. These are still NFL players for a reason. This isn’t an SEC powerhouse playing an FCS school on the college level. Anybody in the NFL, even on a practice squad, has a great deal of talent. You should at least see some degree of professionalism from them.

Back in 2020 the Jets had a disastrous season under head coach Adam Gase. With an 0-13 record in December, the team upset a Rams squad that eventually made the Divisional Round of the NFL players. A partial list of players from that game who got 30+ snaps for the Jets includes the following names: Josh Andrews, Pat Elflein, Breshad Perriman, Denzel Mims, Chris Herndon, Javelin Guidry, Neville Hewitt, Bless Austin, Arthur Maulet, Harvey Langi, Bryce Hall, Nathan Shepherd, and Tarrell Basham.

Bad teams win games all the time. The Browns just beat the Steelers yesterday. More to the point, every team in the NFL can be expected to play competitive football consistently. A year ago the Tennessee Titans earned the top pick in the NFL Draft by posting the league’s worst record. Over half of their games were decided by single digits. Do you think the Titans didn’t have a terrible roster?

The Titans are once again one of the league’s worst teams. They lost to the Saints yesterday but only by an 8 point margin after leading portions of the game. But the Jets couldn’t be competitive with that same Saints team a week ago?

The talent might be the source of the losses, but the issues go beyond the mere fact the Jets are losing games. If I was looking for one play to summarize this month of Jets football, it would be tough to top this one from yesterday’s game.

Just when you think the @nyjets can't be a more embarrassing franchise, Jordan Clark decides he wants to get in Stefon DIggs' face because he broke up a pass while trailing by TWENTY-FIVE POINTS!!!, leading to the dumbest taunting penalty you will ever see in your life.

Jordan Clark is an undrafted rookie who has spent most of the practice squad. You would think that he would do everything in his power to take advantage of an opportunity to get NFL regular season snaps. Clark had a rough start to the game. He was the primary culprit on a number of big plays for the Patriots. Finally he made something happen…and this was how he acted. He taunted with his team down by four scores in the second quarter and cost his team 15 yards and an automatic first down after a third down stop. If this isn’t a team that lacks any sort of standards or accountability, I don’t know what is.

I think firing a coach after one year is a really damaging thing for a franchise. There are exceptions, but coaches need some time to reshape a bad team into a winner. There are also bumps in the road in any career. Coaches can get better as they learn how to do the job. You frequently see bad franchises change coach year after year. Those franchises never really have a chance of becoming good. If you are constantly changing systems, the rosters are always turned over rapidly, making it difficult to develop and uncover under the radar talent.

All of these and more are real costs to moving on from a coach after one year. For that reason, I think quick changes should be reserved for extreme situations where the coach is clearly in over his head and there is little realistic hope it can be turned around. I am talking about situations like Jerrod Mayo with the Patriots last year or Urban Meyer with the Jaguars.

The costs of a rapid coaching change are real. But they have to be balanced with one reality. If a coach clearly isn’t the right man for the job, keeping him in place for another year is more costly than any of the legitimate drawbacks to firing someone after year one. The Jets learned that the hard way when they gave Adam Gase a second season.

Even after all of this, I’m not today going to definitively say that Aaron Glenn should not get a second season. I will say this, however. This season has gone poorly enough that Glenn can fairly be placed in that Mayo/Meyer/Gase group where a quick change can be justified.

If you don’t believe me, consider this. The Jets currently have a point differential of -176 through 16 games. Rich Kotite’s Jets in 1996, a team Glenn played for, had a point differential of -175 in 16 games. Thus we can objectively say that Jets this season have played at a Kotite level.

With that in mind, if the Jets keep Glenn for 2026 there have to be some major conditions. Namely he needs to be able to articulate what went wrong this year and offer a clear and convincing plan that he can fix it. Nobody wants to hear cliches about building taking time. Nothing has been built this season, and eleven months after Glenn’s hiring this team doesn’t feel any further along than it did the day he arrived.
