NY Jets: Woody Johnson rips Justin Fields at NFL’s League Meeting

usa_today_24423487.jpg

The NY Jets starting the season with an 0-7 record has caused fans to question the quarterback, head coach, and owner. And as fate would have it, Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke to the media on Tuesday at the NFL’s Fall League Meeting to address his thoughts on the team – most notably, Aaron Glenn and Justin Fields.

Despite the team’s struggles, Johnson has expressed faith in head coach Aaron Glenn moving forward. Even with their winless record, the owner believes he’s seen changes on defense and special teams that merit patience with the first-year head coach.

“I do believe in Aaron,” Johnson said on Tuesday. “I’ve known Arron since 1996 — I was a fan, I’ve always been a fan of him. I see the way he handles a room. If I were a player, I would respond to him because he’s the real deal. No BS, there’s no second agendas — what you’re hearing is the truth. And a lot of time players don’t get the truth; they get a lot of gobbledygook.”

However, the Jets owner didn’t speak as kindly regarding quarterback in Justin Fields.

One of the biggest culprits to the 0-7 start for the New York Jets has been their quarterback. Fields isn’t performing well as a passer, seeing the field well, or making plays to put the team in winning situations. By now, most fans [and reportedly, players] have realized this. And now, it seems like Johnson is also on the blame train.

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that we’ve got,” said Johnson of the team’s struggles with Fields. “He has the ability, but something is just not jiving. But if you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results across the league.”

However, that’s not all the owner of the Jets stated. While noting improvements on special teams and defense, Johnson did take on final jab at the current quarterback for New York.

“I just think defense, special teams are doing better,” Johnson said. “Defense is pretty good. If we could just complete a pass, it would look good. We got to complete some passes.”

Notably, the NY Jets moved on from Aaron Rodgers and his hefty price tag this offseason. The team cleaned house of some of their more expensive “rentals”, and opted to go in a rebuilding phase led by Fields. While the thought process made sense, the execution has been below even the harshest critic’s expectations. Now, as signs start to point towards Tyrod Taylor being given the reigns, it’ll be interesting to see how Aaron Glenn and the Jets proceed from here.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Jets fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

There are few times when it is fun to be a fan of the New York Jets. This is not one of them. The team is 0-7 and a fairly big underdog in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The honeymoon period for the new coaching staff and front office has been over for quite a while.

We know the coaching staff has lost confidence but how much? That is the topic of our weekly SB Nation Reacts poll. Let us know if you believe in Aaron Glenn. Also fill out the weekly general confidence survey on the team.

We will bring you the results of the poll later in the week.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is refusing to name the Jets starting quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, because he doesn’t want to give the Bengals a competitive advantage. Which begs the question, has Glenn seen Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields play? It’s difficult to believe the Bengals are going to lose sleep trying to figure out how to counter not one, but two terrible quarterbacks in an utterly lost Jets offense.

TNF: Chargers vs Vikings Game Thread

gettyimages-1703216329.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 8. Tonight the Los Angeles Chargers host the Minnesota Vikings.

The 3-3 Minnesota Vikings have alternated wins and losses this season, never winning or losing more than one game in a row. They are coming off a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

The 4-3 Los Angeles Chargers got off to a hot start this season, winning their first three games and taking over first place in the AFC West division. Since then the Chargers have plummeted, losing three of their last four games while giving up 27+ points on defense each of their last three games. The reversal of fortune caused the Chargers to drop into a tie for second place in the AFC West with the surging Kansas City Chiefs. Last week the Chargers lost to the Indianapolis Colts by two touchdowns.

The Vikings have gotten the better of this matchup in recent years, winning three of the last four games between these two teams.

It’s the Chargers and the Vikings tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

There’s a lot of chatter emerging about the Jets trading players at the upcoming NFL trade deadline

imagn-26910900.jpg

Rumors are a part of life in the NFL. It can be difficult to separate real signs something is about to happen from rampant speculation. With that said, there has been a lot of discussion lately about the Jets potentially sending some well-known players out of town at the upcoming trade deadline.

Teams are keeping an eye on the #Jets ahead of the trade deadline: names being mentioned include Breece Hall, Quincy Williams, Jermaine Johnson II, Will McDonald IV, Michael Carter II, and Allen Lazard, among others, per sources:

One source told me: “There’s an element of trying… https://t.co/btc4w2yl8y pic.twitter.com/kswg14F3AP

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) October 21, 2025
DE Jermaine Johnson is a name that has come up for several teams in need of edge help in trade discussions, sources told SNY.

It would take “a lot” for the Jets to part with Johnson, a team involved in those conversations said pic.twitter.com/5vfXdB26hv

— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) October 13, 2025

Things reached a point where Johnson felt the need to respond.

pic.twitter.com/JGbe6HLSCA

— Jermaine Johnson II (@ii_jermaine) October 22, 2025

From Rich Cimini:

New York Jets edge rusher Jermaine Johnson, the subject of trade speculation, doesn’t expect to go anywhere.

Johnson said Thursday that he received “clarity” from the front office.

“I’m definitely wanted here, and I want to stay here,” he told ESPN. “That’s been understood. Hence the tweet.

It certainly seems like the Jets are willing to take calls on some of their big name players at the very least.

It’s difficult to say which players they should trade, though, without knowing what is being offered. There is a price at which it makes sense to trade any player. Generally speaking, my view is that the Jets need to be adding quality players, not subtracting them. While the Jets need to add Draft picks to make up for the many that went traded away under the previous regime, that is best accomplished by trading down in the NFL Draft. Trading away a decent player might add a pick, but it also creates a hole that the pick might need to be used to address.

The one group of players who should definitely be dealt contains guys in the last year of their respective contracts whom the team has no intention of re-signing. It’s best to get something in return, even if small, rather than let them leave for nothing.

In any event, it will be an interesting trade deadline.

Aaron Glenn still isn’t naming his starting quarterback for the Jets’ Week 8 game against the Bengals

imagn-27225896.jpg

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has been quiet all week as to whether Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor will be the starting quarterback when the team faces the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8. That did not change on Friday.

"That's exactly why I'm not telling you, because I don't want to"

Aaron Glenn declines to share who will start at quarterback for the Jets in Week 8 against the Bengals: pic.twitter.com/Mm8XvjkdPH

— Jets Videos (@snyjets) October 24, 2025

Fields was benched at halftime of the team’s Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

It would seem logical that Taylor would start this week. However, as the video above alludes to, Tyrod has been limited at practice this week with a knee injury. His availability to play in the game is unknown.

NFL coaches have a way of being overly secretive about things that really aren’t that important. Glenn himself has shown a tendency to do this in the past. I think there is logic in holding back the information, though. Taylor and Fields have a number of stylistic differences in the way they play the game. It could make the game slightly harder for the Bengals to prepare for if they don’t know which quarterback they are game planning against.

I’m not saying the Jets are gaining anything more than a marginal advantage here. The quality of quarterback play is more important than the ability for a defense to game plan. Neither Taylor nor Fields is likely to light up the scoreboard. This is a Jets team that needs every minor advantage it can get on offense, though.

Fanduel does not have high hopes for Jets in Week 8

gettyimages-2241512707.jpg

The expression “any given Sunday” exists for a reason, but it sure feels like the Jets are walking into a no-win scenario this Sunday. Not only is there public uncertainty around who will play quarterback, but they are without their best cornerback and wide receiver after Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson were ruled out for Sunday’s game.

Just because all hope looks lost doesn’t mean that it necessarily is though. What do the sportsbooks think after running their calculations? To find out, I checked the Fanduel lines as of Saturday at about 9AM EST. (As a reminder, I am not discussing this in order to encourage a bet, but rather because I figure the amount of data and resources at Fanduel’s disposal makes them more qualified to estimate the outcome of games than any of us.)

To start, Fanduel has set the money line for the Jets winning at +240, which is one of the larger lines that we’ve seen this season. Based on the implied odds, this would suggest Fanduel has the Jets pegged as having a 29% chance of victory against the Cincinnati Bengals as led by quarterback Joe Flacco. This sets the Jets up as a considerable underdog but as still having a chance.

Beyond that, they have the point spread at +6.5, meaning they expect the Jets to lose by about a touchdown. In terms of the over/under, the line is 44.5. Pairing those figures together, this suggests a 26-19 Bengals win or thereabout. While another loss would stink for non-tanking Jets fans, avoiding a stinker would likely be appreciated by many other Jets fans after the past few weeks.

Jets vs Bengals Second Half Thread

gettyimages-2243440994.jpg

The first half of the New York Jets game against the Cincinnati Bengals is in the books, and the Jets are trailing the Bengals, 24 – 13.

The game opened with the Jets on defense. They immediately allowed a long Bengals drive before the Bengals ultimately kicked a short field goal for an early 3 – 0 lead.

The Jets took over on offense and turned the ball over on downs on an ill-conceived fourth down rushing attempt deep in Jets territory. The Bengals got the ball and quickly scored a touchdown on a Joe Flacco tush push goal line run. The Jets were already down by double digits and there were still more than five minutes left in the first quarter. Needless to say, things were not looking good for the Jets.

The first quarter ended with the Jets with the ball in their own territory and the score Bengals 10, Jets 0. The Jets put together a decent drive highlighted by a 25 yard Isaiah Williams run before settling for a field goal, bringing the score to 10 – 3, Bengals early in the second quarter.

The Bengals instantly responded, putting together a quick drive ending with a 44 yard Joe Flacco touchdown pass to Tee Higgins to give the Bengals a 17 – 3 lead early in the second quarter.

The Jets came right back with a long touchdown drive of their own. Justin Fields found Tyler Johnson on two big plays, the latter of which was a 15 yard strike in the end zone. That got the Jets within a touchdown at 17 – 10 with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first half. It was the first touchdown the Jets scored in the first half of any game since opening day.

With a little more than a minute left in the half Joe Flacco hit Chase Brown for his second touchdown pass of the first half. That gave the Bengals a 24 – 10 lead.

The Jets closed the half with a field goal as time expired to pull within 11 points going into the locker room.

We go into the second half with the Jets trailing the Bengals 24 – 13.

Leave your comments for the second half below.

SNF: Steelers vs Packers Game Thread

gettyimages-2241658648.jpg

Week 8 Sunday Night Football. Tonight we have a so-called Aaron Rodgers revenge game as the 4-2 Pittsburgh Steelers host the 4-1-1 Green Bay Packers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers come into this game off a damaging loss to the Cincinnati Bengals after winning their prior three games. The Steelers have benefitted from a relatively easy schedule thus far, having faced just two winning teams on the season. The Steelers offense has struggled a bit under ex-Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, scoring more than 24 points just twice. Those two games came against the New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals, two of the worst defenses in the NFL. Rodgers has settled into the role of a nice game manager quarterback, throwing for just over 211 yards per game, the lowest number in his illustrious career.

The Packers come into this game winners of two straight games. They have lost just once this year, and they have scored 27+ points in every game but one on the season. The Packers defense has held their opponents to 18 points or less in four of their six games. This will be a challenge for Rodgers against his former team.

Like the Steelers, the Packers have benefitted from an easy schedule to start the season. The Packers have faced just one winning opponent all season. We’ll see which team manages a win against a quality opponent tonight.

It’s the Steelers and the Packers tonight on Sunday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Jets 39 Bengals 38: You Can’t Predict Football

imagn-27425998.jpg

A legendary New York sports announcer was famous for frequently saying, “You can’t predict baseball.”

He was right. He also would have been right had he ever declared, “You can’t predict football.”

Who could have predicted what played out on the field in Week 8 in Cincinnati? The Jets had a quarterback struggling so badly that he probably would have been benched had his backup not been too injured to travel with the team. He was without his two best wide receivers on a team with precisely one quality wide receiver.

So what happened? The Jets offense racked up 39 points and 502 yards.

The quarterback, Justin Fields, played excellent football, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and looking more confident than he had since a stellar Week 1 outing against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There were certain things the Jets absolutely needed if they were going to win this game. One of them was a big rushing game. They got that to the tune of 254 total yards on the ground. Breece Hall, who also threw for the game-winning touchdown, had one of the best games of his career running the football.

They also needed a bunch of different players to make timely plays. There wasn’t enough receiving talent at the skill spots to expect anybody to individually have a monster day. What the Jets needed was everybody to chip in when their number was called. Indeed, Tyler Johnson, Isaiah Davis, Jeremy Ruckert, Arian Smith, and Mason Taylor all had important receptions. Taylor’s was the biggest, the game winning touchdown on a halfback pass from Hall.

I think we know the Jets are a bad team. Even many of us who didn’t expect the season to go particularly well were surprised by the depths to which the team fell through the first seven games of the season.

It’s nice to have something to feel good about. It’s nice to be in the win column at long last heading into the bye week.

I think it’s also important for Aaron Glenn and this coaching staff. This group has taken a lot of heat, and a lot of it has been fair if we are being honest. Things don’t always go to plan for a new coach. Unfortunately for Glenn, little went right during the first two months of the season. The job was a lot harder than he realized, and the roster’s general lack of talent made things seem dire.

This Jets season, though, was never purely about the win-loss record. So much of the success or failure of this team is and will be based on trajectory. The Jets are in the middle of a youth movement. There are an inordinate number of first and second year players seeing big snap counts. Predictably, this has been the source of some of the team’s struggles. Perhaps the team’s youth and inexperience has accounted for a lower percentage of the Jets’ issues than Glenn would like to admit, but they have almost certainly accounted for a higher percentage than his biggest critics in the fanbase and media would be willing to concede.

By the end of the season, the team’s ability to play smarter, better, more fundamentally sound football or lack of it will determine whether 2025 is truly a success. If the youth on this team starts to blossom, it will be a sign that the Jets might have found their coach.

This game was anything but perfect for the Jets. They were playing behind for most of it, mainly because their defense could not get a stop. It was disappointing to see. Yes, the Jets were missing superstar cornerback Sauce Gardner, but their biggest problems seemed to be the way the Bengals were dominating their defensive line and linebackers.

Through the first seven weeks of 2025, the Jets always seemed to do enough to lose the game. If the defense was good enough to win, the offense would do just little enough to lose. In Week 1 when the offense was stellar, the defense couldn’t get a stop. In Week 3, when the Jets mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback, they needed one play to win the game. They couldn’t get it.

As I mentioned, there is more to progress than wins and losses, but wins are the most tangible sign of progress. On a pretty dismal day for the defense, the unit finally got two stops at the end of the game. One gave the Jets the ball back down by 6. They scored a touchdown to take the lead. The defense then needed one stop to close the game out. They got it. For once the Jets got just enough out of a struggling unit to win, not just enough to lose.

Only time will tell how this season plays out. For now it’s nice to just enough a Jets win for a change.

MNF: Chiefs vs Commanders Game Thread

gettyimages-2242279234.jpg

Tonight the Kansas City Chiefs host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:15 p.m. EDT.

The Commanders come into this game with a 3-4 record, good for third place in the NFC East. They have lost three of their last four games. It has been a rough start to the year for the Commanders, as their defense has been regularly torched and star quarterback Jayden Daniels has had trouble staying healthy. Daniels has already missed two games this year and he will miss his third game tonight due to a hamstring injury. Marcus Mariota will start in Daniels’ place. Mariota puts the Commanders at a huge disadvantage at the quarterback position against the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs.

The Chiefs come into this game with a 4-3 record, good for third place in the AFC West. The Chiefs got off to a slow start this season, losing their first two games. Since then the Chiefs have come roaring back, winning four of their last five games and averaging 31.5 points on offense in their last four games. The return of Mahomes’ favorite target Rashee Rice after a prolonged absence spanning two seasons has the Chiefs’ offense humming. With an offense that is putting points up in droves and has the least turnovers in the NFL to date, the Chiefs are looking like a Super Bowl contender once again.

It’s the Chiefs and the Commanders tonight on Monday Night Football. Enjoy the game everyone.

Justin Fields’ season has been the ultimate roller coaster: What the numbers tell us

imagn-27425663.jpg

Justin Fields’ Week 8 success for the Jets in their win over the Cincinnati Bengals was a surprise to many of us. It continues one of the biggest roller coaster seasons in recent memory.

ESPN’s QBR metric grades quarterbacks on a scale of 1 to 100 based on their play. Week 8 was his sixth start of 2025. Fields posted his third highest single game QBR of the season with a 67.0.

Fields’ fourth highest single game QBR this year was the 11.9 he posted one week earlier against the Carolina Panthers, a game that saw him benched at halftime.

I doubt we have seen many six game stretches where a QBR is above 67 half the time and below 12 half the time. Fields’ career has been full of high highs and low lows, but this is a bit extreme even by his standards.

I decided to take a deeper look to try and figure out trends from his good games and bad games. A major one sticks out. Doing a bit of math from box scores, I found that Fields has been either hit or sacked on 15.4% of his passing attempts in his three good performances. That number jumps to a ludicrous 76.7% in his bad games.

Now if we are judging solely by box scores, the story seems clear. Fields’ offensive line has been good when he’s played well and bad when he’s played poorly. It’s simple, right?

Anybody who has actually watched the games this year knows that is not the story. Fields has frequently been his own worst enemy in the pocket and invited pressure upon himself. A lot of the hits and sacks he has taken have been because he held the ball for too long instead of throwing it away or finding an outlet receiver.

Taking a look at NextGen Stats’ data destroys the offensive line narrative.

In Fields’ three good games, his average time to throw is 3.13 seconds, which is actually higher than his overall total of 2.95. In fact, over the course of a full season, 3.13 seconds from snap throw would tie for the second longest rate in the league.

What I think we can say is that Fields’ offensive line has been exceptional in his three good games. To have a low hit rate with a quarterback holding the ball for that long shows the protection has been excellent.

That aligns with most scouting reports on Fields that he can be slow to get through his progressions and hold onto the ball for too long but also that he flashes high end ability when the infrastructure around him is good.

There is a challenge for the Jets. While there is young talent on the offensive line, two of the three good Fields games have been against Miami and Cincinnati. Both teams’ pass rushes were quite poor heading into their games against the Jets. The dominance in pass protection likely had quite a bit to do with the quality of opponent.

So what can the Jets do going forward?

I think this data and Fields’ success in the Cincinnati game shows that the priority should be to maximize pass protection around the quarterback. There’s only so much you can do when facing teams that aren’t as bad at getting to the quarterback as the Dolphins and Bengals, but perhaps the Jets should focus on frequently leaving extra blockers in to help with the protection.

This creates challenges. Every eligible receiver who stays in to block is one less player the defense has to cover. It enhances the defense’s numbers edge in coverage and makes it harder for receivers to get open. The Jets don’t exactly have a dynamic group at wide receiver after Garrett Wilson, who has missed the last two games due to injury.

Still, Fields had a big day with that shabby group. Nine Jets receivers had at least one reception in the game. At least on some level it seems like if you give Fields enough time, he can find the right target.

I think we all know the Jets are dealing with a limited passing game on a number of levels. The Fields experience likely will continue to be a roller coaster ride with both good and ugly games sprinkled in going forward.

The coaching can only do so much, but it should focus on giving Fields as little pressure as possible to deal with. It’s the clearest path to more 67+s and less 12-s.

Jets Reacts Survey Week 9: Does one week make a difference for Aaron Glenn?

imagn-27425999.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Jets fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Jets finally got their first win of the 2025 season in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It was a win the team needed. It was also a win the coach needed. Nobody wants to start off his career with an 0-7 record as a head coach. Last week we asked Jets fans whether they believe Glenn is the right coach for the team. It was clear from the results that the seven game losing streak had an impact.

Does one win change the perspective on Glenn? That’s what we are asking this week. It’s a new week. The Jets have a win. Now we ask the same question. Is Glenn the guy? Vote in our poll below, and we will bring you the results later in the week.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets traded cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth round pick. The Jets seem to prefer Jarvis Brownlee at slot cornerback. Since Carter can’t play outside cornerback, that made him an expensive and expendable piece. The Jets need help at wide receiver, so maybe Metchie can help there, though his track record in the last four years suggests he’s a long shot to produce much. Moving up from a 7th to a 6th round pick is nice, but depending on how bad the Jets are in 2026, the move up may be smaller than you think.

gettyimages-1904723494.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 9. Tonight the Miami Dolphins host the Baltimore Ravens.

The 2-5 Baltimore Ravens have fielded an uncharacteristically terrible defense this season. They also have been hurt by the absence of star quarterback Lamar Jackson due to injury. As a result the Ravens started the season 1-5 before winning last week against the Chicago Bears. Now they hope to start to string some wins together and perhaps get back in the playoff race, starting tonight against the Miami Dolphins.

The 2-6 Miami Dolphins are coming off a win last week against an Atlanta Falcons team missing their starting quarterback. The win was much needed after the Dolphins got off to a 1-6 start this season. The Dolphins have suffered through this season with a bad running game, bad passing game, bad defense and too many turnovers. We’ll see if they can start to turn things around against a Ravens team that has struggled nearly as much as the Dolphins.

It’s the Dolphins and the Ravens in a matchup that probably looked a lot better on paper when the schedule was being set up than it does tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets have been rumored to be in the market for trading Breece Hall for months. Now, as the trade deadline looms just a few days away, sources are saying, not so fast. Ex-Jets Progress Report: Part 2 – Defense

gettyimages-2241734222.jpg

Now that the bye week is here, it’s time to update you on former Jets players and how they’ve been faring with their current teams. We are covering this in three parts and will be looking at defense today having already covered the offense. We’ll move onto special teams within a few days.

As ever, this list is intended to be exhaustive, but if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments.

Commanders:

Linebacker Frankie Luvu was a second team all-pro last year but so far his impact hasn’t been as significant, as he has just two sacks and one pass breakup to go along with 43 tackles.

On the other hand, defensive end Jacob Martin has made a much bigger impact than expected with 3.5 sacks and a team-high nine quarterback hits. He has started six games and been credited with 20 tackles.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was a big addition during the offseason and he’s been disruptive although his stats are not that impressive with 17 tackles, three hits and three tackles for loss. He is yet to record a sack.

Kinlaw is joined on the defensive line by Jalyn Holmes, who began the season on the practice squad but has since been signed to the main roster. He has played in five games, starting one, and recorded 13 tackles.

Linebacker Nick Bellore is making the majority of his contributions on special teams as usual.

Giants:

The Giants added three ex-Jets on defense since final cuts; cornerback Korie Black and linebackers Zaire Barnes and Neville Hewitt with all three mostly contributing on special teams. Black is back with the team after the Jets had picked him up after final cuts, while Barnes remains on the practice squad.

They also just claimed Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers from the Browns.

Cowboys:

Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas has been a useful reserve for the Cowboys. He has 18 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass defensed while exclusively playing inside once again.

Dallas also added cornerback Corey Ballentine to their practice squad and he has played in one game for them, recording one tackle.

Also: Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was initially on the main roster but went on injured reserve before the season.

Eagles:

Cornerback Parry Nickerson, a 2018 Jets draft pick, was on the Eagles’ practice squad before being placed on the main roster, but he was just released again and re-signed to the practice squad after playing five games and recording two tackles.

The Eagles also traded for Michael Carter II earlier this week, of course.

Bears:

The Bears haven’t had any ex-Jets on their defense yet this season.

Packers:

Defensive end Deslin Alexandre and safety Jaylin Simpson were on the Packers’ practice squad but Alexandre has since been released.

Vikings:

Linebacker Blake Cashman has once again been affected by injuries this year as he has been limited to three starts. He had 18 tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit in those games.

Lions:

Cornerback DJ Reed got off to a good start with 16 tackles, four pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery in the first four games. However, he’s currently on injured reserve. One of his replacements was another ex-Jet, Art Maulet who has made an impact with eight tackles and an interception in two games.

Also: Defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson was recently added to the practice squad but didn’t play yet.

Bucs:

Edge defender Haason Reddick got off to a good start but his first half production has been a little underwhelming considering the big salary Tampa Bay is paying him. In seven starts, he has 16 tackles, five quarterback hits and 1.5 sacks. He’s currently bothered by an ankle issue.

Also: Cornerback Bryce Hall remains on the practice squad.

Falcons:

Atlanta hasn’t had any ex-Jets on their defense this season.

Saints:

Former all-pro linebacker Demario Davis and defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd remain in starting roles for the Saints, with Davis having started every game and racked up 72 tackles, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. Shepherd has started six of eight games with 25 tackles, seven quarterback hits and a sack.

Panthers:

Claud Cherelus had a bigger role on defense last year but has played just 18 defensive snaps in seven games in 2025.

Also: Cornerback Shemar Bartholomew was on the practice squad but got released before the season.

49ers:

Defensive end Bryce Huff has been a good addition for the 49ers, having bounced back well from a down year with the Eagles. Huff has 19 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass defensed in seven games.

Safety Jason Pinnock has also played a significant role as he’s played eight games, starting five. He has had 20 tackles but no impact plays.

Also: Defensive lineman Bruce Hector was recently re-signed to the practice squad.

Rams:

The Rams were another team with no defensive ex-Jets on their roster at any point this season.

Seahawks:

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams had a monster second half in 2024 so it will be interesting to see if he can repeat that in 2025. So far, his production has been solid but unspectacular with 30 tackles, three sacks and 10 quarterback hits in seven games.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt started off on the practice squad but he’s played in seven games and is now on the main roster. He’s mostly just been on special teams though.

Cardinals:

The Cardinals are the final NFC team with no defensive ex-Jets on their roster at any point this season.

Bills:

Cornerback Brandon Codrington is obviously on the team for his return abilities but has played 10 defensive snaps.

Linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo is back on the practice squad having briefly been on the main roster. He only played on special teams in his one appearance.

Defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis was signed to the Bills’ practice squad and has so far played in one game, recording two tackles.

Dolphins:

Safety Ashtyn Davis has had a significant role, as he has started in five of his eight appearances. He has 26 tackles, a forced fumble, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup.

Defensive back Elijah Campbell is in a reserve role but only played three defensive snaps so far.

Another defensive back, Kendall Sheffield was recently added to the practice squad and has made two appearances already, with one tackle.

Patriots:

New England released Ballentine from their practice squad after he played one game for them but have since added another ex-Jet, defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III.

Browns:

Defensive tackle Shelby Harris is in a rotational role this year, within which he has 13 tackles, five tackles for loss, two quarterback hits and a pass defensed in eight games.

Defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse had been on the roster all season, but he only played on special teams and is now with the Giants after being waived a few days ago.

Steelers:

Cornerback Brandin Echols and safety Chuck Clark have both contributed on defense for the Steelers. Echols in particular came up big in the win over New England with an interception and a key fourth down stop.

Echols has played in seven games, starting two, and has 19 tackles and two passes defensed. Clark has played in six games, starting four. He has 33 tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble.

Also: Defensive lineman Domenique Davis remains on injured reserve.

Bengals:

Defensive tackle Mike Pennel was a late addition but had been a useful backup with 15 tackles and a tackle for loss in eight games off the bench. However, he was just released.

Ravens:

The Ravens recently added defensive end Carl Lawson to their practice squad, although he hasn’t played yet.

Titans:

The Titans haven’t had any ex-Jets on defense so far this year.

Colts:

The same is true for the Colts.

Texans:

Folorunso Fatukasi and Sheldon Rankins were reunited on the defensive interior in Houston although Fatukasi is currently on injured reserve. Rankins has started seven games and has 11 tackles and a sack. Prior to getting hurt, Fatukasi had made one start but he had eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in four games.

Also: The Texans re-signed Jalen Mills, who had been with them in preseason, to their practice squad.

Jaguars:

The Jaguars are the only other AFC team that hasn’t had any ex-Jets on defense this season.

Broncos:

John Franklin-Myers is having another strong season after a good 2024 campaign. He has played in eight games, starting seven, and racked up 13 tackles, six quarterback hits and four sacks.

Raiders:

After an injury-plagued 2024 campaign, defensive tackle Leki Fotu has played in four games this year, starting two. He has six tackles and a sack.

The Raiders also signed Jamal Adams and moved him into a permanent linebacker role and he’s surprisingly resurrected his career there. He made two starts and has 21 tackles and a sack in seven games overall.

Also: Linebacker Jamin Davis was signed to the practice squad but didn’t contribute yet.

Chiefs:

The Jets traded Derrick Nnadi to the Chiefs during final cuts and he’s been a useful addition for them as he has made six starts. In all, he has just six tackles in eight games, though.

Chargers:

Finally, the Chargers signed linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips but all his contributions so far for them have come on special teams.

Check back here next week when we’ll be covering ex-Jets special teamers and how they’ve performed on their current teams…

How the Jets defense shook off an ugly game and closed out the first win of 2025

imagn-27439406.jpg

It was a rough game for the Jets defense in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fortunately for the Jets, one of the few times the unit stepped up was when it needed a stop to close out the game late in the fourth quarter.

The Bengals started their final drive with a quick first down. Then the Jets got their stop to end the game.

On first down, the Jets ran a Tampa 2 type coverage. It is a Cover 2 defense. There are two deep safeties with zone coverage underneath. Jamien Sherwood’s job is to defend the hole in the middle of the field between the two safeties.

1st.png

Joe Flacco’s first look is to Ja’Marr Chase over the middle of the field. Flacco looks like he’s loading and about to throw the ball to Chase.

1st1.png

Instead, Flacco decides to target Andrei Iosivas who is breaking between the second and third levels of the defense. This isn’t the easiest throw because Sherwood is in decent position to drop deep.

1st2.png

Flacco also has to put the ball a bit behind Iosivas to avoid leading the receiver into a big hit from Tony Adams.

1st3.png

Putting the ball behind Iosivas, however, leaves Sherwood in position to make a play and break up the pass.

Should Flacco have just shown to Chase? It’s tough to say. This is the type of thing that is easy to Monday morning (Thursday evening?) quarterback. The Jets defense had to execute at a high level here, or this is a completion. It isn’t just a completion. It’s a completion that puts the Bengals into field goal range and probably wins the game.

On the other hand, Chase was open for positive yardage on first down. The Bengals still had all three timeouts and 45 seconds on the clock. They were probably less than 20 yards from field goal range at this point. So maybe the money in the bank throw to Chase was better.

It’s up for debate.

We move on to second down where the Bengals try a run. It’s not a terrible idea. The Bengals had all three timeouts and had gashed the Jets in the run game to this point to the tune of over 8 yards per attempt.

The Jets are also playing the pass with two safeties back.

2nd.png

The Bengals have a blocker for every Jets defender near the line of scrimmage.

2nd2.png

The Jets need somebody to win a one on one. Fortunately for them, Quinnen Williams does just that.

View Link

That one yard gain brought up third and nine.

Flacco is back to pass and initially looks right.

3rd.png

I’m not even sure he gets to the top of his drop before his head turns. It turns because of the pass rush.

The Jets start the play with three of the four defensive lineman on the right side of the offensive formation (left side of the defense).

3rd1.png

Quinnen Williams occupies the center.

3rd2.png

The Bengals don’t really communicate and end up with both a guard and a tackle blocking Micheal Clemons.

3rd3.png

This leaves a gaping hole for Jermaine Johnson to shoot through.

3rd4.png

Flacco’s head turns. He seems to look to his left, the opposite of where he initially began reading the play.

3rd5.png

This play actually could have gotten a bit ugly for the Jets.

The Jets have a double team on Ja’Marr Chase on this play. Tony Adams has help over the top with Brandon Stephens in coverage.

3rd6.png

Stephens’ help is to the inside. That means he has to stay outside Chase. He cannot get beaten to the outside.

3rd7.png

However, Stephens does allow Chase to get inside him to create a window.

3rd8.png
3rd9.png

The pressure is just too much for Flacco to be able to accurately throw a ball this far into this tight of a window, though, and it falls incomplete.

View Link

That brings us to fourth and nine. The game is on the line.

I think the Bengals do the Jets a real service here sticking Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the end of the line on each side. This makes it easy to double team both with safety help.

4th.png
4th1.png

Flacco’s first read is Chase who is taken away.

4th3.png

Next he looks to Andrei Iosivas who is breaking to the middle of the field with Jarvis Brownlee Jr. trailing him.

4th2.png

Flacco tries to throw it low and away from Brownlee where his receiver has the best chance to grab it.

4th4.png

It’s just too tight of a window, though. Brownlee is in good coverage. The pass is incomplete, and the Jets seal their first win of 2025.
