Aaron Glenn: Nothing if not authentic

imagn-27028078.jpg

I was pretty surprised when I saw that the viral clip from the New York Jets v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game was of Aaron Glenn being excited.

So…Aaron Glenn’s sideline celebration is 🔥🔥🔥 with Earth, Wind & Fire attached to it. pic.twitter.com/KRAwV843LI

I lied. I’m not done. I need someone to take my phone though. And also…LET AARON GLENN DANCE.

— JennaLaineESPN (@JennaLaineESPN) September 24, 2025

My formative football years were spent watching Rex Ryan coach the Jets. This would’ve been a light celebration by Rex Ryan standards.

But even if it wasn’t light, who cares? By all means, this is the fiery and excited Aaron Glenn that the Jets knew they were hiring over the offseason. In fact, apparently this has been Aaron Glenn for a few decades if his former teammate Victor Green is to be believed.

Have fun AG. That’s been you and it got you here. Keep getting excited when your players make play. Win/lose. We’re not the same ole Jets. I’m rooting for you and our @nyjets see you home against Dallas. Good luck! https://t.co/HgAg3xz7Tb

— Victor Green (@victorgreen2121) September 24, 2025

And based on the research, being authentic is a pretty strong feather in your cap as a leader. Essentially, being oneself is thought to allow the leader to be consistent and predictable over time, which allows for improved follower outcomes and performance in a lot of cases. It’s also strongly related to transformational leadership, which is thought to be the gold standard of leaders according to many.

In other words, Victor Green’s evaluation was right, Glenn wearing his heart on his sleeve is what got him here. And much like Victor Green, I’d argue Glenn should keep being himself even if it draws some extra attention and might make for some cannon fodder after a loss.

What do you think? Yay or nay on Glenn’s outward excitement?

What is Fanduel expecting in this week’s Jets-Dolphins game?

imagn-27083331.jpg

Tonight, the New York Jets will face off against the Miami Dolphins in a battle of two 0-3 teams. I have to imagine this was not what ESPN was expecting when they scheduled this game for a primetime game in the first month of the season.

I would guess based on the record of the two teams that fans of each fanbase would mostly expect their team to beat what they view as a comparably worse team. But what does Fanduel think based on their gambling lines (as of Sunday at about 8PM)? As a reminder, I am not discussing this in order to encourage a bet, but rather because I figure the amount of data and resources at Fanduel’s disposal makes them more qualified to estimate the outcome of games than any of us.

To start, they have the money line set at +132 for our New York Jets, meaning you can bet $100 and win an additional $132 if they win. This positions them as an underdog with about a 44% chance of victory.

In line with that relative “toss up” betting line, the spread is set for +2.5, meaning that they expect the Jets to lose by a field goal. Beyond that, they have the over/under set at 44.5 meaning that they expect a relatively high scoring affair in the range of 24-21 Dolphins.

For me, the general estimate seems about right. I could see paths for either team to win but I’d expect it to be close either way. A final score of 24-21 in either direction strikes me as about right.

What do you think? Where does Fanduel have it right and wrong?

Jets vs Dolphins Second Half Thread

gettyimages-2238189950.jpg

The first half of the New York Jets game against the Miami Dolphins is in the books, and the Jets are trailing the Dolphins, 10 – 3.

The game opened with the Jets on defense and they immediately showed their mettle, giving up an opening drive field goal for an early 3 – 0 deficit.

The Jets offense took over and put together a long grinding drive, running the ball at will. Braelon Allen took a handoff near the goal line and looked like he was going in for a touchdown, but in a classic Jets moment he fumbled on the way in, turning the ball over to the Dolphins and wasting one of the best Jets drives in recent memory.

The first quarter ended with the Dolphins driving in their own territory and holding a 3 – 0 lead. The Dolphins methodically went down the field and put the finishing touch on a 96 yard drive with a Tagovailoa to Waller touchdown pass. The Dolphins led by double digits early and the Jets were in a precarious position.

On the next Jets drive the Jets faced a fourth and five at the Dolphins 36 yard line. Rather than kick a field goal the Jets went for it. It did not turn out well. Justin Fields was sacked and fumbled, giving the Dolphins the ball in Jets territory as the game threatened to get out of hand early.

The Jets managed to escape that drive without further damage. Nick Folk then closed the half with a career high 58 yard field goal, drawing the Jets within a touchdown at halftime.

We go into the second half with the Jets trailing the Dolphins 10 – 3.

Leave your comments for the second half below.

Dolphins 27 Jets 21: Jets are the worst team in the NFL

imagn-27208102.jpg

I couldn’t tell you the reason, but football tends to produce the most classic coach press conference rants than any other sport. On the college side, the undisputed king of press conference rants is the recently fired Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State. In 2007 he famously yelled at a reporter, “I’m a man! I’m 40,” at a reporter who wrote an article he thought was unfair. On the pro side, coach rants are the stuff of legend. Famous rants include “You play to win the game,” from former Jets coach Herm Edwards, “Talk to the trainer! Next,” from Mike Ditka during his brief and unsuccessful run coaching the Saints, and. “The Bears are who we thought they were!” from Dennis Green.

The undisputed king of the NFL coach press conference rant is former Saints and Colts head coach Jim Mora. His greatest hits include but are not limited to, “Playoffs?!” “Diddly poo” and “People are sick.” If you ever find yourself down and in need of a laugh, find a YouTube video with a compilation of Mora’s greatest press conference meltdowns. Mora is best remembered for incredulously saying, “Playoffs?!” but if you watch the full press conference you’ll see Mora melted down to the point that, “Playoffs?!” arguably wasn’t even in the top three of hilarious moments in that very press conference.

Less remembered is a rant from then-Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan in 2003. The Raiders had gone to the Super Bowl the previous year in Callahan’s first season. Callahan inherited John Gruden’s infrastructure. Oakland lost the Super Bowl to Gruden and the Buccaneers, and the season that followed was a disaster.

Callahan had a long and distinguished career as an assistant offensive coach in the NFL. This includes a four year stop in New York where he molded the Jets offensive line into one of the league’s finest and molded D’Brickashaw Ferguson into a Pro Bowl player. Ferguson’s career was so successful that people forget how shaky his first two seasons were before he received Callahan’s mentorship.

Callahan is a highly respected assistant and has been for decades. He was in over his head as a head coach, however.

He did provide us with that one press conference. I couldn’t stop but think of Callahan’s words when watching the Jets lose to the Miami Dolphins to fall to 0-4.

It’s one thing to be short on talent. The Jets started the season with some pretty glaring holes on their roster. They also began the year with virtually no depth anywhere. The team could not afford any injuries. Unfortunately the injury bug has struck often at the early stages of the 2025 season. This was naturally going to limit this team’s upside.

My hope was that a new coaching staff would lead to a hard nosed football team that maxed out its talent and gave opponents everything they could handle. I was hoping to see a smart, disciplined football team.

Was this too much to me for ask? Looking back, perhaps it was. The Jets roster is loaded with young players. Young players make dumb plays. It is also loaded with bad players. Bad players are bad in part because they make dumb plays.

Still it feels to me like the Jets are playing below their talent level right now. Even with the Jets’ personnel issues, a Jets team that played smart and disciplined football would likely be 2-2 right now and maybe even 3-1. That wouldn’t make the Jets a good team any more than their 4-3 start with Zach Wilson playing in quarterback made those Jets a good team. A fall would almost certainly come, and a paper thin roster would be exposed eventually. We at least could feel good about the team.

There isn’t much to feel good about with the current Jets team. I think the loss to Miami shows that currently the Jets are the worst team in the NFL. They went out there in Week 4 and lost pretty handily to a Dolphins team that had looked hopeless heading into this game. Much of that goes back to the Jets being a dumb football team.

If you watched this game, you saw that the Jets were actually pretty successful moving the ball on a terrible Miami defense. Drive after drive stalled, however, because of an error. It started on a Braelon Allen fumble that short circuited a physical drive where the Jets ran the ball at will. Time and again we saw a penalty or some other error bring ruin to a promising possession.

If the offense played well except for a handful of errors, I can’t say the same thing about the defense. A Miami offense that spent much of the first three weeks looking lifeless came to life as the Jets defense busted assignments, missed tackles, and committed penalties.

Capping a first half 96 yard touchdown drive, the Dolphins went for it on fourth and goal from the Jets’ 4 yard line. I had two thoughts when Miami kept its offense on the field. The first was that going for it would have made zero strategic sense for the Dolphins under most circumstances. The second was that I understood why they went for it here because I had no faith in the Jets to stop them. The Dolphins scored on a touchdown reception by Darren Waller. It was the first of two touchdown catches for Waller who previously had been out of football for a year.

In the second half on a De’Von Achane touchdown run, Tony Adams had the chance to make an open field tackle. I didn’t even need to watch to know the play would end with an Adams missed tackle and an Achane touchdown.

On special teams, you might remember the Jets cut Xavier Gipson after his costly Week 1 fumble against the Steelers. The team signed Isaiah Williams to take over as return man. Leave it to the Jets to find the one return guy in the NFL more useless than Gipson. Williams fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half away, one of three Jets lost fumbles on the night. Later in the game he inexplicably made a fair catch on a punt return on the 3 yard line.

To be the worst team in the NFL, it’s not enough to lack talent. You have to combine a lack of talent with an incredible dumb approach to the game and create a level of hopelessness for your fans. Whenever things are threatening to go well, you need to make an inexplicable major mistake at the worst possible time.

I’m far from ready to declare that Aaron Glenn is another Bill Callahan, a quality assistant in over his head in the top job. I don’t think that’s fair to Glenn, and I think that would miss the magnitude of the job Glenn must do. Glenn shouldn’t be one and done with this team. He also probably won’t be. He hasn’t lost the locker room, and the media likes him. Those are two prerequisites for a coach getting an early hook.

The good news for Glenn and the Jets are that the Playoffs were never the expectation. If this young team can make meaningful strides and start playing smarter football, wins will follow. If that happens, fans can still come away from the 2025 season feeling good. It probably sounds crazy to say, but it’s true.

Perhaps the Jets won’t be the NFL’s worst team at the end of the year. We can hope to see that sort of progress.

Four weeks into the season, however, the Jets are the worst team in the NFL. They’ve also drawn inspiration from the 2003 Raiders as the dumbest team in America.

Scouting Jets cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr.

gettyimages-2189272701.jpg

The Jets recently acquired cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. in a trade with the Tennessee Titans. Today we break Brownlee down in detail.

The 24-year old Brownlee is listed at 5’10” and 194 pounds and was a fifth round pick out of Louisville last April. Brownlee started 14 games in his rookie season and the first two of this year, but was acquired by the Jets in exchange for a day three pick swap last week.

Background

Brownlee was a three-star high school recruit who enrolled at Florida State in 2019. He redshirted his first year, although he did play four games and registered one tackle.

In 2020, he started four of eight games and had the first interception of his career, along with 26 tackles. Then his role increased in 2021 and he started 11 of 12 games, racking up 51 tackles and two picks, one of which he returned for a 70-yard touchdown.

After the 2021 season, he transferred to Louisville where he started all 13 games and had career-highs in tackles (66) and pass breakups (12), along with two interceptions.

In 2022, he was named honorable mention all-ACC despite missing three games due to injury. He started 11 and had 30 tackles, six pass breakups and an interception.

After missing his combine workout due to injury, Brownlee’s pro day workout was underwhelming and questions over his size and attitude were ultimately cited as the reasons why he ended up falling to the fifth round after some analysts had viewed him as a day two talent. The Titans selected him with the 146th overall pick.

As a rookie, Brownlee started off in a rotational role but made his first NFL start in week four and remained as a starter for the rest of the season. He was among the NFL rookie leaders with 75 tackles and nine pass breakups, adding one interception.

He began 2025 as a starter as well but missed the third game of the season due to injury and was then traded to the Jets. He was inactive for Monday night’s game with the same injury but is apparently “week to week” so he should be in the line-up soon.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Brownlee brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Brownlee’s size and length are average at best, but he has good strength, having worked hard at that aspect of his game between 2022 and 2023.

His pro day numbers were disappointing as he only ran 4.54 in the 40-yard dash and posted below average explosiveness numbers and mediocre agility numbers.

Usage

Brownlee has experience of playing both in the slot and outside. Although some analysts felt his lack of size would make him a better fit in the slot, he’s mostly played outside at the NFL level. However, he did play full time in the slot in two games last year, so he has done it at this level. Within either role, he is often employed in press coverage.

Coverage skills

Brownlee posted excellent coverage numbers in college, as he gave up a catch on just 52 percent of his targets. However, he was prone to giving up big plays with at least one of 40 yards in each of his last four seasons and an average of almost 16 yards per catch and 15 touchdowns allowed.

At the NFL level, he allowed a catch on less than 60 percent of his targets last year with a lower average of 11 per catch and three touchdowns. So far this year, he’s allowed just 59 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets.

As noted, he has given up big plays at times, lacking the long speed or recoverability when his man gets a step on him.

jarv5.gif

However, his positioning and ability to stay with his man are impressive, as he stays balanced coming out of his transitions and anticipates well.

jarv6.gif

Ball skills

Brownlee has had pretty good on ball numbers during his career, highlighted by 2022 when he was fifth in the ACC with 12 pass breakups. He never had more than two interceptions in a season in college, though.

He had nine pass breakups in his rookie season, showing competitiveness at the catch-point and good timing.

jarv7.gif

His lone interception at the NFL level came on a wayward pass that he reacted well to come up with. He did have another impressive leaping interception negated by a penalty though.

jarv9.gif

Tackling

Brownlee is a willing and productive tackler who takes pride in his tackling and views it as one of his best traits. He comes downhill aggressively and can close and hit hard.

His tackle efficiency has been good both in college and at the pro level, although he does still miss the occasional tackle from time to time.

jarv4.gif

He has only forced one fumble in his combined college and pro career.

Physicality

Brownlee is renowned for his aggressive style. Whether jamming at the line, competing for the ball or leaning on his man downfield to re-route him, he really gets after it in coverage, even against larger opponents.

As noted above, he is a good hitter and attacks ball carriers aggressively. He also isn’t afraid to take on much bigger blockers and shows good strength to take on blockers his own size.

jarv0.gif

At times, he can be too physical when in coverage and can be known to panic and grab. He has 12 penalties in his 19 NFL appearances, including three in two games this year. Six of those were for illegal use of the hands, illegal contact or defensive holding and four were for defensive pass interference.

Strangely, though, this was less of a concern in college where he only had 11 defensive penalties in his entire career.

Run defense

Brownlee is eager to get involved in run stopping situations and, at times, has been over-eager, losing contain on a bounce-out. He seems to have played with more discipline at the pro level though, so hopefully that habit has been coached out of him to a degree.

He shows good anticipation to look for opportunities to come up and get involved in run support and has the quickness to shoot gaps into the backfield.

jarv1.gif

As noted, he is adept at taking on blockers but also has the ability to beat a blocker before he can get his hands on him.

jarv8.gif

Blitzing

Brownlee hasn’t blitzed very often over the course of his career but could be effective at this if he got more chance to do it because of his tackling ability.

He didn’t register a single pressure last year but had two in the season opener this year, including one where Bo Nix threw an interception as he was getting to him. In college, he had just one sack but recorded a pressure on several other plays.

jarv2.gif

Special teams

Brownlee played special teams for the first few games of last year, including getting some reps as a gunner and vice, but as soon as he moved into the starting line-up, this was no longer the case. He did make a couple of tackles in preseason action though:

jarv3.gif

In college, he had experience on every unit apart from the placekicking unit and had 11 special teams tackles and three special teams penalties in his career.

Instincts/Intelligence

Brownlee’s highlight reel has plenty of examples of him blowing plays up in the flat. Again, this speaks to his aggressive nature and eagerness to come up and make plays near the line. However, he also displays solid play recognition and teams don’t seem to have been able exploit any over-eagerness on his part very often.

jarv11.gif

He’s shown good versatility to play both inside and outside without much disruption and was on the ACC honor roll in college.

Attitude

Brownlee’s attitude has been a concern, which factored into his decision to transfer out of Florida State and his lower than expected draft position. He looked to have put aside these concerns by earning a starting job and having a productive rookie season, but the same concerns are also believed to factored into the Titans’ decision to trade him.

Quotes from multiple NFL scouts from before and after he was drafted use words like “baggage”, “cancer”, “high-maintenance” and “drama” with one describing him as a “nut” who was basically the defensive back version of George Pickens. One incident saw him refuse to practice at Florida State because he wasn’t happy with his NIL money.

Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt also mentioned some things behind the scenes that he wouldn’t go into detail about but apparently would have been likely to have led to a trade, if true.

On the field, despite his high penalty count, it’s worth noting that he doesn’t have any penalties for taunting or unsportsmanlike conduct at the NFL level. His only two personal fouls were for grabbing the facemask. However, when asked how he might adjust his play to prevent penalties being called on him earlier this year, his response was that he thought he played well, and this apparent unwillingness to change his style has been cited as a reason for the Titans opting to move on from him.

Simply put, he might be considered uncoachable by some. However, it’s worth noting that the Jets’ defensive backs coach is Chris Harris, who coached Brownlee in Tennessee in his rookie season. Clearly Harris must be confident he can get more out of Brownlee, otherwise this deal would never have been made.

Injuries

Brownlee is currently week to week with an ankle injury that kept him out of his last game with the Titans and his potential first game with the Jets. He was reportedly in a walking boot at one point but it doesn’t sound likely he’ll be out for much longer.

He also had an ankle injury when he was due to work out at the 2024 combine and missed three games with a foot injury in 2023.

Scheme Fit

The Jets have said they have a plan for Brownlee, who – as noted – has been coached by Harris in the past. With Brandon Stephens, Michael Carter II and Sauce Gardner all currently on contracts worth over $10 million per year it makes you wonder how he’s going to fit. Have they already given up on Stephens after fan criticism which began as soon as he was signed and shows no signs of slowing down through the first month? Or could the plan be to move Stephens back to safety?

It may just be that the Jets saw an opportunity to add a talented guy they’ve liked for a while for a low price and were prepared to make the move and worry about how the pieces all fit over the next few weeks and months.

He was a college teammate of current Jets Jermaine Johnson and Lawrance Toafili, and was also a teammate of Nick Folk with the Titans.

Conclusions

Brownlee is an interesting addition at a position where the Jets already have an interesting mix of veterans and youngsters. However, Aaron Glenn knows the cornerback position and clearly thinks Brownlee adds some talent that could make the overall secondary stronger.

Many Titans fans were shocked that they let him go, given the fact that they are a rebuilding team and he was one of their more promising youngsters, but obviously there is a personality or style clash on some level which made it easy for them to decide he’s not part of their future.

As to whether he can be part of the Jets future, the cost of bringing him on board was not prohibitive, but he’s known to be a handful and if they sense he’s having a negative influence on their culture, they may be compelled to cut their losses too. Hopefully being traded and reunited with Harris is something Brownlee will see as a fresh chance so he will approach the opportunity like a pro.

He could be a steal if he lives up to his potential, so it’s a worthwhile gamble for a team in the Jets’ situation.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets are preparing to take on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Cowboys have the NFL’s #1 ranked offense in terms of yards gained and passing yards gained, and they have the NFL’s #32 defense in yards allowed. This game has the potential for lots of things to go right for the Jets on offense. It also has the potential for a disastrous showing on defense, as the Jets’ porous pass defense takes on the Cowboys’ prolific passing attack. Dallas has scored 40 points in two of their four games. The Jets will need to dramatically improve on defense if they are to keep the score respectable in this one. We’ll see if they are up to the task.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Jets fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The 2025 season is not off to a positive start for the New York Jets. The team finds itself 0-4 entering this week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. We have watched a lot of bad and undisciplined football through the first four games. The Jets have not looked like a winning team. So when will the Jets finally get their first win? That is our question in this week’s SB Nation Reacts survey.

Who knows? Maybe a win can make a big difference. Maybe the Jets can get on a little bit of a roll. We can dream at least. Vote in our survey, which also includes the weekly confidence rating poll, and we will bring you the results later in the week.

TNF: Rams vs 49ers Game Thread

imagn-24974447.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 5. Tonight we have a clash of NFC West rivals as the Los Angeles Rams host the San Francisco 49ers.

The Los Angeles Rams have gotten off to a fast start to the season with a 3-1 record, good for first place in the NFC West. The Rams only loss has been to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Last week the Rams beat the previously undefeated Indianapolis Colts. The Rams feature a solid defense and a well-balanced offense with an efficient running game and the most dominant receiver in the NFL this season in Puka Nacua, who is on pace for well over 2000 receiving yards. Now the Rams seek to gain sole possession of first place in the NFC West against another 3-1 team, the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers sit in a three way tie for first place in the NFC West at 3-1. They lost their first game of the season last week against the surprising Jacksonville Jaguars. Now they take on a very good Rams team. They’ll have to manage without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who is out with an injury. Starting in Purdy’s stead will be journeyman quarterback Mac Jones.

The Rams have taken the last three games between these two teams. Prior to that the 49ers had won nine of the previous ten contests.

It’s the Rams and the 49ers tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the cornerbacks have been worse

imagn-27082799.jpg

Say what you want about the New York Jets for the last few years, but one thing that hasn’t been up for debate has been the high quality of their cornerback core. While other teams wished that they had one lockdown corner, the New York Jets were regularly trotting out three over the past few years in Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed, and Michael Carter II.

Things sure feel different this year though. What was once a wide receiver’s nightmare matchup against the top-tier trio has become far less daunting if you ask many Jets fans, and apparently if you ask ProFootballFocus too.

PFF coverage grades by season for @nyjets DB's:

Sauce Gardner:

2022: 90.8
2023: 90
2024: 73.1
2025: 60.6

Michael Carter:

2021: 56
2022: 71.2
2023: 83.3
2024: 47.9
2025: 35.9

Tony Adams:

2022: 61.8
2023: 65.2
2024: 67.5
2025: 53.6

Through the first month of the 2025 season, the returned duo of Jets cornerbacks have played well below their career norms. What was once elite is currently looking mediocre, which is less than ideal given the contracts that both are trying to live up to. Moving forward, if the Jets are to improve then this is probably an area where they’ll have to see some upticks.

Jets pass coverage is struggling to execute the basics

imagn-27208763.jpg

There are many frustrating parts of watching the Jets play defense. At the top of the list are the lack of cohesion and communication this team shows on that side of the ball.

Let’s take a look at an the opening play of the second quarter in the Week 4 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Sauce Gardner is aligned outside against Tyreek Hill.

communication.png

Hill cuts across the field as most Jets defenders up front bite on a play action fake. From here, it looks like Tony Adams (yellow arrow defender) might be in better position to pick up Tyreek Hill (red arrow receiver) while Gardner (red arrow defender) could be in better position to take Julian Hill (yellow arrow receiver).

communication2.png

What happens is Gardner and Adams both take Julian Hill.

communication1.png

Tyreek Hill ends up wide open. If you’re going to choose one guy to not cover on Miami’s offense, Tyreek Hill is a less than ideal choice.

Let’s fast forward a bit. On this next play, the Dolphins have Jaylen Waddle in the slot and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine aligned outside. Sauce Garnder is the outside corner while Michael Carter II is the slot corner.

communication3.png

The Dolphins run a basic rub route with Westbrook-Ikhine running into Carter. This is to free up Waddle

communication4.png

Westbrook-Ikhine doesn’t get a great piece of Carter, but he gets just enough. A receiver with Waddle’s speed doesn’t need much help to create separation.

communication5.png

Again these are basic things the Jets are failing to execute. Gardner isn’t recognizing the play and jamming Westbrook-Ikhine to prevent him from getting the rub executed. Nobody seems to be calling this out. Carter seems unaware he is getting caught in traffic. The result of the play is a 28 yard gain.

Let’s move onto the third quarter. Gardner is lined up on Waddle this time.

communication6.png

Waddle breaks inside.

communication7.png

Gardner is clearly calling out for help and releases Waddle.

communication8.png

No help is there.

communication9.png

You’ll see on the video that most of the defenders again bite hard on play action. The help Gardner is expecting is in no position to provide any.

The reasons for the Jets defense struggling to this extent are many. Plays like this certainly play a role. The defense is busting some pretty basic assignments.

An open letter: Please be better, New York Jets. Your diehard fans deserve it

imagn-27054396.jpg

This week, the New York Jets once again went head and embarrassed themselves in a nationally televised game of professional football. The latest feat? Three lost fumbles, including one at the one yard line. Perhaps an even more impressive one? A fair catch caught at the two yard line.

The #Jets just fair caught a punt… at the 2-yard line. 🤦‍♂️

These are just not the sorts of things that happen to a serious team.

And in previous years of my life, this type of stuff would’ve had me looking like this.

I think that was just about what I looked like after the New York Jets beat the Buffalo Bills in 2017 to start the late season “surge” that moved them from a spot that guaranteed them one of the draft’s presumed top quarterbacks to one that would eventually require a pretty costly trade up. It was a similar reaction when the team seemingly opted not to bid on wide receiver Amari Cooper when the Dallas Cowboys traded him, presumably to leave the wide receiver room wide open for that offseason’s “up-and-coming star” (turned deserving castoff once games were actually played), Elijah Moore, to take the lead as second year quarterback Zach Wilson’s pre-draft top target.

The team used to enrage me. I cared enough about this team that their failures were bothersome. In fact, those failures were really, really, REALLY bothersome. Embarrassingly so in hindsight, but that’s fandom, right? Nowadays though? I usually just laugh when “Jets stuff” (very derogatory) happens to the Jets. I expect so little from this team that their failures don’t bother me one iota anymore as their failures have come to be what I expect.

I can’t imagine that I’m the only previous diehard Jets fan that has experienced this change. In fact, I have to imagine it’s been most at this point.

I mean they lost ME as a fan who their losses hurt, and I really did not think that was possible for a very long time. If they lost that level of care from me? Well, then they had to lose many, many, many other fans along the way. It’s anecdotal but based on my lived experiences, I have to imagine that the apathy is common because I meet more people who tell me that they’re Jets fans who just make fun of the team when we realize that we’re both privy to the same sad displays than I do fans who are hopeful and optimistic.

My dad though? My dad still has hope. He watches every week. He plans his days around their schedule. He went to opening day. He spends all offseason hoping that they’re going to be a good team. It’s admirable and it’s a level of hope that I wish I still had. He was disappointed when they stunk yet again on Monday, same way he was in the weeks from this season that preceded it.

So with that said, I hope that this reaches someone in the Jets office because it’s a message that needs to be made clear: There are still a lot of people like my dad out there and they deserve better than what this franchise is giving them. Heck, they deserve it more than just about team’s franchise at this point because what Jets fans have had to endure for 16 to 17 Sundays for the past 14 years or so has been nothing short of consistently pathetic. At some point, you will lose those fans because everyone has a breaking point and I think you’re getting dangerously close to it for the last group of diehards who have been holding out hope year after year after year despite you giving them so little reason to.

So be better and find a way to do it fast. Not for me. Not for you. But for people like my dad because when you lose them then you might as well just move the franchise somewhere else.

SNF: Bills vs Patriots Game Thread

gettyimages-2193283812.jpg

Week 5 Sunday Night Football. Tonight we have a matchup between AFC East rivals. The 4-0 Buffalo Bills host the 2-2 New England Patriots.

The Buffalo Bills come into this game as the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL. They have already beaten the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins by double digits this season. Now they look to make it a clean sweep of the AFC East against the Patriots in the first half of the schedule.

The Bills look like perhaps the best team in the NFL early in the season. Josh Allen has the offense humming, scoring 30+ points in every game this season, and the Bills defense has allowed just 51 points over the last three games combined. It’s going to be a very difficult task for the Patriots to keep pace with this Bills team.

The New England Patriots have been a Jekyll and Hyde team this season, alternating dominant performances with disappointing losses. In two of their games the Patriots scored 33+ points. In their other two games they scored 27 points combined. Which Patriots offense shows up tonight will likely dictate whether they can compete with the Bills juggernaut. On the road in Buffalo, I wouldn’t hold my breath for a Patriots victory.

It’s the Bills and the Patriots tonight on Sunday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.
