Tyrod Taylor to start in place of injured Justin Fields for Jets vs. Buccaneers

imagn-27084596.jpg

Jets quarterback Justin Fields left the team’s Week 2 loss against the Buffalo Bills with a concussion. Head coach Aaron Glenn announced on Wednesday that Fields will miss the Week 3 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Veteran signal caller Tyrod Taylor will make his first Jets start this Sunday.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 17, 2025

The Jets signed Taylor a year ago as a veteran backup for Aaron Rodgers. He saw only mopup duty in his first season with the Jets in a couple of blowout losses.

Since Taylor’s contract contained guarantees for a second season, he returned to the Jets in 2025 to serve as Justin Fields’ backup.

Taylor is a veteran with plenty of starting experience. He was the primary starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills from 2015 through 2017. Since then he has mainly been a short-term placeholder and backup.

While Taylor has mobility, he and Fields are different types of quarterbacks. Taylor likely won’t miss the easy throws Fields misfired on against Buffalo in Week 2. He will also likely protect the football. But he doesn’t possess Fields’ ability to make big plays.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets brought in eight defensive backs for tryouts yesterday. They ultimately signed one, cornerback Nik Needham, to the practice squad. It’s not exactly a franchise altering move. Nonetheless, at least the Jets brass is being proactive, scouring all available avenues to make incremental changes to improve the team. In the short term, the move itself is trivial. In the long term, a leave no stone unturned approach to rebuilding this roster may yield some interesting results. It’s not splashy, but it’s better than some recent Jets GMs who stood pat and watched clearly undermanned Jets rosters while making minimal efforts to improve. Baby steps are better than no steps.

Justin Fields and a tale of two games

imagn-27037394.jpg

The New York Jets and their fanbase would love nothing more than for free agent acquisition and former first round pick Justin Fields to play so well that everyone is confident that the team has their guy at the helm of the franchise for the next decade. Whether that happens will be decided on the field. Through two weeks, “the field” has told two wildly different stories.

Justin Fields in Week 1: 0.68 EPA per attempt, his best in 46 career starts.

Justin Fields in Week 2: -0.58 EPA per attempt, his worst in 46 career starts.

— Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) September 14, 2025

EPA is estimated points added, and it essentially measures whether or not a given play has increased the likelihood/amount of points that a team is expected to score on a given drive. As shown by the tweet, Fields was perhaps the best he’d ever been at the NFL level in Week 1 and the worst he’d ever been at the NFL level in Week 2. Talk about a Jeckyl and Hyde type of situation.

Which of those two is closer to reality will be determined throughout the season after Fields returns from his concussion. In the interim though, we fans have gotten a quick crash course in just how good Fields can look when it’s all going right and just how bad he can look when it’s all going wrong. I think we can all see firsthand why the opinions of others on Fields have been so divided over the years.

TNF: Bills vs Dolphins Game Thread

gettyimages-2182720836.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 3. Tonight we have a clash of AFC East rivals as the Buffalo Bills host the Miami Dolphins.

The Buffalo Bills have gotten out of the gate quickly, winning their first two games. Opening day saw the Bills stage a miracle comeback with three scores in the final four minutes as they squeaked out a 41 – 40 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills followed that thrilling win with a demolition of the New York Jets last Sunday, 30 – 10, in a game not as close as that blowout score might indicate. Now the Bills strive to make it a 3-0 start to the season against the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins have gotten their 2025 season off to a miserable start. The Dolphins got blown out, 33 – 8, by the Indianapolis Colts on opening day. They followed that up with a 33 – 27 home loss against the New England Patriots last Sunday. Now they head into the lion’s den against a Bills team that once again looks like a Super Bowl contender. A loss by the Dolphins would give them sole possession of last place in the AFC East and put another nail in the coffin of what could be Mike McDonald’s farewell tour.

The Dolphins have not beaten the Bills in Orchard Park since 2016, and the Bills have won 15 of the last 17 games between these two teams. The Dolphins have their work cut out for them tonight.

It’s the Bills and the Dolphins tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

What kind of game is Fanduel expecting after Justin Fields was ruled out?

imagn-21236942.jpg

I think it’s fair to say that the average New York Jets fan is probably not expecting a victory since the team announced that quarterback Justin Fields will miss the team’s week 3 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not only are the Buccaneers playing well with a 2-0 record, but the Jets will now be trotting out quarterback Tyrod Taylor as their starter, who might provide a higher floor than Fields but probably also provides a lower ceiling in a week that they could really use a plus performance.

Just how dire is it? To determine that, I figured I’d check the implied odds provided by Fanduel’s current moneyline (as of Wednesday at about 5:30PM EST). I don’t do this in order to encourage a bet, but rather because I figure the amount of data and resources at their disposal makes them more qualified to estimate the outcome of games than any of us. So what does the line suggest?

To start, Fanduel has the moneyline set at +260, meaning you can bet $100 on the Jets to win an additional $260. The implied odds of this line suggests Fanduel thinks the Jets have about a 28% chance of victory. Honestly, that’s probably higher than most Jets fans do, so we could choose to view this as a rosy prediction.

Beyond that, they have the spread at -6.5, meaning they expect the Jets to lose by a touchdown. They also have the over/under set at 44.5, meaning they expect a 26 to 19-ish kind of game if we put those two figures together. I don’t think most fans would sign up for a loss, but I think that’s likely a more competitive game than many expect.

While unlikely, these figures from Fanduel don’t exactly imply that the Jets are a lock to lose. Fans will just have to hope for a bit of an upset.

What do you think? Can the Jets pull out the win?

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and it’s possible the Jets defense will catch a break. Buccaneers Starting guard Cody Mauch is out for the season. The same goes for starting tackle Luke Goedeke. Starting receiver Emeka Egbuka has not practiced this week, and All Pro tackle Tristan Wirfs has been limited. That’s a lot of Buccaneers offensive talent that may be out or hobbled on Sunday. It may be just the break the beleaguered Jets defense needs to get on track after opening the season giving up 30+ points in back to back games.

The Jets aren’t built to win shootouts. If the Jets defense doesn’t drastically improve this will be a very long and frustrating season for the players and fans alike. Here’s hoping the defense gets on track this Sunday. Maybe the NFL injury gods can help out a little in that respect.

A tale of two offensive lines

imagn-26423944.jpg

It has long been said that an NFL game is “won in the trenches.” Through that lens, the play of the offensive line is critically important. I imagine that this is a message that is not lost on New York Jets fans after some of the offensive lines that they have been forced to watch in recent years.

This weekend the shoe seems to be on the other foot. So far this season, the years of investment of the New York Jets into the offensive line seems to be paying dividends.

Jets OL grades by PFF through 2 weeks

Fashanu: Overall 58.3 (55th/ 92 Ts) – 49.3 pass 60.6 run
Simpson: Overall 48.1 (71st/ 82 Gs) – 66.2 pass 51.8 run
Myers: Overall 64.5 (16th/ 40 Cs) – 64.3 pass 63.2 run
Tippman: Overall 72.3 (9th/ 82Gs) – 80.1 pass 67.1 run
Membou: Overall…

— The Buffalo Jet Fan (@BuffaloJetFan) September 16, 2025

In particular, the right side of the offensive line has been lockdown with first round pick offensive tackle Armand Membou leading the charge with the 3rd best PFF grade among tackles after 2 weeks.

By comparison, the Buccaneers offensive line comes in a bit wounded, potentially allowing the Jets defensive line to control the pace of play when they’re on the field.

Ok, so options for Bucs OL I think are best given a brutal situation.

Assuming Wirfs/Goedeke/Jordan/Mauch all out this week (worst case scenario), I would start this way:

LT Barton
LG Klein
C Bredeson
RG Feeney/Opeta
RT Chukwuma

Trying hard to avoid playing Haggard or Heck

— Jon Ledyard (@LedyardNFLDraft) September 18, 2025

You never know what a Sunday brings, but the Jets seem to be have a considerable advantage when comparing the two offensive lines, at least on paper. If the Jets pull off the upset, this will likely be a big reason why.

Fan confidence in Jets, Justin Fields plummet after Week 2 loss

imagn-27082636.jpg

A week ago, the Jets were 0-1. Still our SB Nation Reacts surveys showed a lot of confidence in the team and quarterback Justin Fields. 92 percent of fans said they were confident in the team’s direction. An identical 92 percent said Week 1 increased their confidence in Justin Fields. It was reasonable to expect a drop after a brutal loss to the Buffalo Bills. How far did things fall?

NewYorkJets_1_091725.png
NewYorkJets_2_091725.png

I don’t think these figures are a big surprise. If you have followed our fan confidence surveys through the years, you know well that these things can swing wildly based on a good performance or a bad performance. Even if Jets fans were not expecting a win against Buffalo, I think it is fair to say that most were expecting the team to show more fight and more competitiveness.

The only good you can say about that game is it’s over. The Jets have a chance to put that ugliness behind them.

SNF: Giants vs Chiefs Game Thread

imagn-17076288.jpg

Week 3, Sunday Night Football. Tonight we have a matchup between two last place winless teams. The New York Giants host the Kansas City Chiefs in a battle of the cellar dwellers on Sunday Night Football.

The New York Giants were expected to struggle this year, and they have. They started the season with two road games. On opening day the Washington Commanders dominated the Giants, 21 – 6. A week later the Giants took the Dallas Cowboys into overtime in Dallas before succumbing, 40 – 37. The Giants offense has been up and down, but the defense is currently the worst in the NFL. That may not bode well against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs went to the Super Bowl last season. They were favorites to do the same this season. So far they have not looked the part. The Chiefs have yet to score more than 21 points in a game, and Patrick Mahomes has looked pedestrian with many of his best weapons hurt or suspended. In what has been a surprisingly tepid start for the Chiefs they have lost their first two games on the way to their current last place in the AFC West standings. The Chiefs offense scares nobody at this point, and the defense has only been middling. The offense will have a good opportunity to get untracked against a porous Giants defense tonight. If the Chiefs squander this opportunity their playoff chances will begin to be in doubt. Very few teams recover from an 0 -3 start to make the post-season.

It’s the Giants and the Chiefs tonight on Sunday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

The Jets didn’t give Will McDonald a second chance to leap over the line and block a kick

imagn-27139876.jpg

Will McDonald’s blocked field goal, return, and score gave the Jets the leave with under 2:00 left in the fourth quarter of the team’s Week 3 game against the Buccaneers.

The lead was short lived. The Buccaneers promptly got the ball back and drove down the field for the winning score. Shortly after McDonald blocked a field goal attempt, Chase McLaughlin kicked another attempt through the uprights as time expired.

I’m not saying McDonald would have done it again. I’m certainly not saying this cost the Jets the game. But it is odd to me that the Jets didn’t put McDonald in the same alignment on the second kick as the first.

When he blocked McLaughlin’s try you can see he lines up as close to the long snapper as possible. It gives him a chance to leap over the line. Once he does so, he’s flying up the middle right into the kick.

View Link

But just a few minutes later as McLaughlin lines up for the game-winning attempt, McDonald aligns in a different spot. He is all the way on the outside. There is no chance to leap over the line again and shoot up the middle.

View Link

I admit it would have been a lot to ask for Will to do that a second time, but I don’t see why you would go away from something after it just worked. If Tampa Bay handles it better, so be it. Force them to handle it better, though. At the very least, the sight of McDonald trying to leap again might have gotten into McLaughlin’s head.

It’s a long shot, but everything about winning the game at that point was a long shot for the Jets.

Scouting Jets linebacker Cam Jones

imagn-26887161.jpg

The Jets recently claimed linebacker Cam Jones off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. Today we break Jones down in detail.

The 25-year old Jones is listed at 6’2″ and 227 pounds and was an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in 2023. Jones played all 32 regular season games over the past two seasons, starting two and racking up 36 tackles and a quarterback hit. His main role was on special teams though and he’s played a similar role with the Jets so far this season.

Background

Jones was a three-star high school recruit who headed to Indiana in 2018 and contributed well as a freshman with 20 tackles, two forced fumbles and in interception in 11 games.

His role increased in 2019 although he remained as a backup. He had 35 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups and a pick-six.

Jones made his first start in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was named as an all-Big 10 honorable mention as he had 35 tackles, three sacks and a career-best three pass breakups in just eight games.

In 2021, he was productive again with a career-high 64 tackles and two sacks in 11 games. However, his 2022 season ended prematurely due to injury. Despite this, he was so productive that he named as an honorable mention again. In just five games, he had 55 tackles and two sacks.

Jones was invited to the scouting combine but ended up going undrafted. Despite this, he made the Chiefs’ opening day roster as an undrafted free agent and remained on the team for the next two seasons, mostly in a special teams role.

As a rookie, he had only played three defensive snaps entering the last week, but started the last game as the Chiefs were resting their starters for the postseason. He racked up 12 tackles in that game.

Last year, the same thing happened as he had played seven snaps leading up to the season finale but then started and had a full-time role in the last game, in which he again had 12 tackles. The Chiefs lost this one 38-0, though.

Having been released in final cuts, Jones was claimed by the Jets and has played a role on special teams for them so far this year.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Jones brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Jones shows good athletic ability in his game film but only ran a 4.71 at the scouting combine. However, he got this down to 4.61 at his pro day. He has below average size and length.

The rest of his workout numbers were disappointing as he had a 33-inch vertical, below average agility numbers and 17 bench press reps.

Usage

Jones is an off-ball linebacker, which obviously requires him to match up in the slot from time to time.

At Indiana, he started off in the husky role, which is a hybrid safety position used in nickel packages. He then moved to the stinger position (weakside linebacker) in 2019.

Run defense

Jones has been a productive run defender with the ability to cover ground going sideline to sideline and shoot gaps to make plays.

cam9.gif

He typically plays with good discipline but there are occasions where he will get stuck on a block.

cam3.gif

Coverage skills

A lot of Jones’ assignments in coverage simply involved him dropping into the middle of the field and reacting to limit the damage on passes underneath, although he will drop deeper or latch onto a man coverage assignment at times.

cam5.gif

He’s generally given up completions on a high percentage of his targets (76 percent in college, 85 percent in preseason action and over 90 percent in regular season action), although he hasn’t been responsible for many big plays. He got beaten for six touchdowns in coverage in his college career.

Jones doesn’t have much on-ball production with no passes defensed in NFL regular season or preseason action and only nine in five years in college. He intercepted two passes but the last of these was in 2019, albeit that it was a pick-six.

cam6.gif

Tackling

Jones has good closing speed and is a hard-hitter but his tackle efficiency has typically been solid. He averaged six missed tackles per season in college, but did have 14 in 2023. He missed five tackles in his two NFL starts though.

cam2.gif

In college, Jones showed a bit of a knack for forcing fumbles with five in five years.

Blitzing

Jones had eight sacks in his college career but he didn’t blitz very often and, when he did, his pressure percentages were underwhelming. A lot of his production instead came from when he was spying the quarterback and stepped up to make the tackle behind the line or apply pressure on a throw.

cam4.gif

Special teams

Jones has already shown with the Jets than he can contribute as a blocker and in coverage on special teams. He has good experience on every unit apart from the placekicking unit.

While he only had four special teams tackles at Indiana, he’s had a bigger role at the NFL level with 12 special teams stops in two years with Kansas City and three in his first two games as a Jet.

cam0.gif

He has contributed as a blocker already with the Jets, although he had two penalties for holding and an illegal block in the back with the Chiefs.

Physicality

Jones isn’t very particularly big and can struggle to fight off blocks but he can hit and shows some aggression when attacking the line of scrimmage.

cam1.gif

He has no defensive penalties at the NFL level and had just four in his career at Indiana.

Instincts/Intelligence

Jones has good versatility and the ability to recognize play design so he can blow up plays.

cam7.gif

One of his key attributes is his patience. He is more likely to allow plays to develop rather than overpursue or get himself sealed off.

cam8.gif

Jones has been fooled by play-action and misdirection from time to time, though.

Attitude

Jones was a captain for three years at Indiana and is known for being a vocal and willing leader with an exceptional work ethic.

In 2021, Jones received Indiana’s Howard Brown “Dedication to IU Football” Award.

As noted, his on-field discipline, both in terms of penalties and his assignment discipline have been excellent.

Injuries

Jones’ only injury at the NFL level was a chest injury during the 2024 postseason which saw him placed on injured reserve. He hasn’t missed a regular season game.

His college career was disrupted by a foot injury that forced him to have season-ending surgery just five games into his final season. However, he only missed one other game.

Scheme Fit

Jones is currently listed as the backup to Marcelino McCrary-Ball, which suggests that if he was to get any defensive reps, he’d be the third linebacker in base packages. However, he has played a few different roles over the course of his career. Of course, his primary role is going to be on special teams.

Jones and McCrary-Ball were actually teammates at Indiana. He has also been a teammate of current Jets Esa Pole and Byron Cowart with the Chiefs, although strictly speaking he only overlapped with Cowart by five days and wouldn’t have practiced with him.

Conclusions

The Jets desperately needed some players with experience to add to their linebacker unit because after final cuts, the only linebackers on the roster apart from Jamien Sherwood and Quincy Williams were a rookie, a player who had never played any defensive snaps in a regular season game and a player with only three defensive snaps of experience.

Jones has at least had those two starts, but these were both meaningless games and one of them was a blowout loss. Other than those, he’s only played 10 snaps himself. In the event of a long-term injury, the Jets would probably still be more likely to turn to Mykal Walker, who was subsequently added to the practice squad, unless McCrary-Ball or Kiko Mauigoa really improves in the meantime. Naturally, this is an immediate concern following Quincy Williams’ shoulder injury on Sunday.

At 25, he’s still young enough to develop, but for now, Jones’ focus and priority should be on special teams. He’s already been active within that role, so hopefully that continues.

Jets acquire cornerback Jarvis Brownlee in trade with Titans

imagn-27081983.jpg

The Jets have made a move at the cornerback position, trading for Jarvis Brownlee. The deal reportedly involves a late round pick swap with the Tennessee Titans.

New #Jets CB Jarvis Brownlee was a 5th-round pick of the Titans in 2024 — he has 1 career INT and 10 PBUs.

Aaron Glenn adds a young corner to his defense, while Tennessee gets a better draft pick in 2026. https://t.co/k0WJN6Ia35 pic.twitter.com/8kiLz8K1zP

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) September 23, 2025

A fifth round pick out of Louisville a year ago, Brownlee became a rookie starter for the Titans.

Rookie stats from Music City Miracles:

Pro Football Focus credited Brownlee Jr. with allowing 55 receptions on 81 targets last season for a conversion-to-completion rate of 67.9 percent. Brownlee Jr. allowed 663 yards and four touchdowns. He was very competitive at the catch point, recording six pass breakups and one interception.

He was whistled for nine penalties, which represents an area of improvement for 2025.

Those coverage numbers are not great. Brownlee is also a tad undersized. You have to wonder whether that contributed to the high penalty count. Still, fifth round rookies usually don’t see the field much at all. Perhaps all the reps will be beneficial for his development, and he can help the Jets going forward. At least that will be the hope.

The Brandon Stephens signing has been a disaster for the Jets. Despite Brownlee’s early career inconsistency, it would not be a shock to see him step into the starting lineup in place of Stephens in the near future.

New York Jets Flight Connections 09/24/25

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

Lots of news involving the New York Jets today. The Jets placed linebackers Quincy Williams and Marcelino McCrary-Ball on the injured reserve list, a damaging blow to the Jets defense. They signed a couple of scrub linebackers to fill in. The Jets also traded a 2026 sixth round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for second year cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and a seventh round pick. That seems like a pretty good deal for the Jets. Brownlee was a decent starting cornerback for the Titans. A late round pick swap seems a minimal price to pay for such a player.

For now Brownlee has a lower leg injury and will probably not see action right away. Further down the line Brandon Stephens and/or Michael Carter may be in jeopardy of losing snaps to Brownlee.

Armand Membou continues to excel

2201962578.jpg

Fans would love if every first round pick stepped onto the field in week 1 of the regular season and proceeded to dominate. In reality, that very rarely happens.

The New York Jets though? Well, it looks like they might have done just that in the first year of the Aaron Glenn-Darren Mougey tenure.

Jets rookie Armand Membou now up to 8th in pass block win rate (96%) among tackles.

The four tackles immediately ahead of him: Joe Alt, Dion Dawkins, Garett Bolles, Penei Sewell.

To keep it simple, those are some fantastic names for a rookie tackle to be listed near. If he can live up to the play of those guys then the Jets will have found a franchise tackle to build around.

If you want more than that though, then here are some of his raw counting stats. It’s truly elite play from the first-year rookie who, in theory, should only get better with time and experience.

Jets rookie RT Armand Membou has been excellent in his first three starts. It’s even more impressive who he’s done it against in veteran groups for PIT, BUF & TB.

• 108 pass pro snaps
• 3 pressures
• 1 sack
• 3.7% pressure rate allowed

— Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) September 21, 2025

With the Jets already 0-3, it sure seems like the team is going to need some reinforcements. Right tackle though? That seems locked in for quite some time.

The Jets need to be smarter about avoiding bad Brandon Stephens matchups in key situations

imagn-27140975.jpg

I know I risk entering Captain Obvious territory when I say the Jets covering Mike Evans with Brandon Stephens on the goal line of the team’s Week 3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a bad idea. The play resulted in am easy Tampa Bay touchdown.

There is something I would like to point out about the play that shows just how bad of a matchup it was for the Jets. The Bucs were in a run play.

You can see a pair of double teams up the middle. This is a run blocking scheme called Duo.

duo.png

Running back Bucky Irving is also driving forward at the snap as though he is going to receive a handoff. There is no fake from Mayfield so this isn’t play action.

duo1.png

As you are likely aware, there is nothing unusual about a play like this in a modern NFL offense. Quarterbacks, particularly veteran signal callers frequently have the freedom to throw the ball if they see a matchup they like presnap, even if the call is for a run play. Aaron Rodgers did this a lot last year.

I just think it speaks volumes that Mayfield identified this as a mismatch like the rest of us watching at home did.

The Jets really need to be smarter about how they match up with opponents at the goal line because putting Stephens on a receiver of this caliber this close to the end zone is close to an automatic touchdown. In fact I would imagine the Bucs sent Evans isolated to the outside to see whether Stephens would follow him and Mayfield could get an easy touchdown.

stephens.png

You can be certain upcoming Jets opponents will see the film on this and hunt for this matchup when close to a score.

Justin Fields back at practice for Jets but not cleared to play yet

imagn-27083331.jpg

The Jets play at Miami on Monday night. The team has begun to practice for the game but still does not know for sure who will be starting at quarterback. Justin Fields returned to the practice field on Thursday, but he still hasn’t been cleared to play in Week 4 as he recovers from a concussion. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that Fields will play if medically cleared.

Justin Fields will practice today, but he's still in the concussion protocol, per Aaron Glenn. #Jets

Fields will start against the Dolphins if he's cleared by docs, per Glenn. #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) September 25, 2025

You might be wondering about how a player can be cleared to practice but not yet cleared to play in a game. The answer is simple. Quarterbacks cannot be hit in practice so the threshold to be medically cleared is lower than it is to play in a game.

The fact Fields is getting first team reps as the team begins installing its game plan for the week is a sign that the team is optimistic he will be cleared in time for the game. A bit of uncertainty might help the Jets in this one. Fields and Tyrod Taylor have different styles as quarterbacks. A defense will likely gameplan differently for a game where Fields is starting than it would when Taylor starts. The mystery could be beneficial for the Jets.

TNF: Cardinals vs Seahawks Game Thread

imagn-24945486.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 4. Tonight we have a clash of NFC West rivals as the Arizona Cardinals host the Seattle Seahawks.

The Arizona Cardinals have benefitted from an easy schedule to get off to a 2-1 start to the 2025 season. They beat the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers, two of the NFL’s weaker teams, to start the season before falling to the San Francisco 49ers last week in a 16 – 15 squeaker. Now the Cardinals seek to stay out of the highly competitive NFC West basement tonight against the 2-1 Seattle Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks have also gotten their 2025 season off to a 2-1 start. Like the Cardinals, the Seahawks lost to the 49ers in a close, low scoring game. Also like the Cardinals the Seahawks beat up on the lowly New Orleans Saints. The other Seahawks victory came against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom the Seahawks blew out in Week 2, 31 – 17. Now they head into Arizona trying, like Arizona, to stay out of sole possession of last place in the NFC West.

History is on the Seahawks’ side. They have beaten the Cardinals seven straight times and eight of the last nine. The Cardinals have just one victory in Arizona against the Seahawks since 2012.

It’s the Cardinals and the Seahawks tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

New York Jets edge rushers leave much to be desired

imagn-24493276.jpg

Running an NFL team is really no different at its core than any other business at its core. Just like any business, teams invest resources and hope to yield strong returns on their investments. For an NFL team, perhaps their highest resources that can be allocated are draft picks, given that the players are cost-controlled and allow the team their highest possibility of yielding a great player. Among those picks, a first-round selection is by far the most valuable.

Based on that, the New York Jets were really being built for the defense to run through its edge rushers, a position where they invested two first round picks over the last four years. What have they have gotten for those investments? Well, I think it’s fair to say that their return on investment hasn’t lived up to the hope.

#Jets PFF DE ranks among EDGE (min. 70 snaps):

• Will McDonald: 49.6 (67th out of 75 qualifiers)
• Micheal Clemons: 41.4 (72nd)
• Braiden McGregor: 38.7 (74th)

Tyler Baron hasn’t played enough snaps to qualify, but he’d rank 68th.

Jermaine Johnson (70.9 grade) ranks 32nd.

— Justin Fried (@JustinTFried) September 22, 2025

While 2022 first round draft pick Jermaine Johnson has been a starting caliber player, 2023 first round pick Will McDonald has yet to find that same success. And the rest of the edge rusher room? Not any better.

Overall, the Jets defense has yet to be what many had hoped for this season. The play of the edge rushers likely has played a significant role in that and it will need to improve if the Jets are to save their season over the coming weeks.

Previewing the Jets’ opposition: Miami Dolphins

imagn-24944042.jpg

The Jets haven’t won in Miami since 2014 in a game Jets fans will remember as The Geno Smith Perfect Game Game. They got close last year, though, as Miami’s late comeback sent the game into overtime, with the Dolphins ultimately winning 32-26. Miami had a more comfortable win over the Jets in the season finale but both teams enter Monday night’s clash winless.

Let’s break down the Dolphins roster, going position-by-position:

Quarterbacks

Tua Tagovailoa is a 2023 pro bowler who led the NFL in completion percentage last year. However, he’s off to a rocky start in 2025 with four interceptions already as his interception percentage is double his career mark. He’s also been sacked eight times, fumbling twice.

The other concern with Tagovailoa has been injuries, which means we can’t rule out Zach Wilson getting a chance to make his former teammates lives hell in a a relief appearance. Wilson looked solid in preseason and is five for eight with three first downs in regular season action for his new team.

Seventh round rookie Quinn Ewers is also on the roster and has been serving as the number three quarterback.

Offensive Line

As was the case with the Bucs last week, Miami has been decimated on the offensive line. They have seven offensive linemen on injured reserve, including last year’s starting right guard Liam Eichenberg and the opening day right guard and right tackle – James Daniels and Austin Jackson – who were injured in week 1.

This leaves them with a group that lacks experience. Three of the four new starters had barely played before this season with the exception being new right tackle Larry Borom, who never started more than nine games in a season and only started four last year.

Left guard Jonah Savaiinaea is a second round rookie and has struggled badly in pass protection so far. The new right guard is Kion Smith, who hadn’t started an NFL game before this season and has been struggling in the running game. At left tackle, last year’s second round pick Patrick Paul, who just started three games as a rookie, has been holding up reasonably well but is a downgrade from Terron Armstead, who retired in the offseason.

Center Aaron Brewer is at least experienced, as he has started every game for three straight seasons. He was tied for the team lead with nine penalties last season, though, and already has three this year.

Ironically, the Dolphins’ bench has a ton of starting experience, so they could change things up if the likes of Smith or Savaiineaea don’t improve. Cole Strange, Daniel Brunskill and Kendall Lamm have 139 starts between them. Brunskill already saw some action last Thursday night in place of Smith.

Running Backs

With the offensive line in flux, it’s not surprising that running back De’Von Achane hasn’t got off to a great start. He’s averaging less than 50 rushing yards after having rushed for over 900 and had 12 total touchdowns last season. However, he leads Miami with 18 catches, including an 8-for-92 performance in week 2 against New England. Achane had 78 receptions last season.

On the bench, sixth round rookie Ollie Gordon has been the number two, ahead of 2024 draft pick Jaylen Wright. Gordon has rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown.

2023 pro bowl fullback Alec Ingold remains on the roster too. He has three receptions in the first three games.

Pass catchers

Miami’s most dangerous playmakers are still Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, even though both saw their production dip last season. Hill is now 31 but has a 100-yard game two weeks ago. Waddle had one of his best games of last season against the Jets with 99 yard on nine catches.

The main reserve so far has been Malik Washington, who has six catches but also has six carries as he is a jet sweep option.

While he only has three catches so far this season, offseason addition Nick Westbrook-Ikhine shouldn’t be underestimated after racking up nine touchdown catches with the Titans last year.

Dee Eskridge and Tahj Washington are also on the roster but Washington has been inactive.

At tight end, Miami brought in the freshly unretired Darren Waller but he’s been injured. He returned to practice on a limited basis on Thursday.

In Waller’s absence Julian Hill and Tanner Conner both got work. Conner had three catches in the first three games.

Defensive Line

Miami has some talent on their defensive line with Chop Robinson, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips all getting decent playing time on the edge. Robinson had six sacks as a rookie and Phillips leads the team in total pressures but Chubb is currently the only player on the team with more than one sack or hit. He has three sacks in three games.

The interior defensive line is anchored by Zach Sieler, who 10 sacks in each of the past two seasons, and the 335-pounder Benito Jones.

Veteran Matthew Judon is currently playing a rotational role off the bench on the edge, while Matthew Butler is joined by three rookies as interior reserves. Kenneth Grant was Miami’s first round pick in April, while Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers were picked on day three.

Linebackers

At linebacker, Tyrel Dodson and Jordyn Brooks play a full-time role. Dodson leads the team with 33 tackles, having led them with three interceptions last year. Brooks was the leading tackler in 2024, as he racked up 143 tackles.

KJ Britt, Willie Gay and Cameron Goode fill out this position group but their primary role is special teams, as they’ve combined to play just 12 defensive snaps.

Phillips is also listed as a linebacker but he plays exclusively on the edge.

Defensive Backs

Miami’s defensive backfield took a hit in training camp when both Artie Burns and Kader Kohou suffered a torn ACL to rule them out for the rest of the season. They also saw Jevon Holland walk in free agency and traded away Jalen Ramsey to bring back safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick starts at safety alongside former Jet Ashtyn Davis with another ex-Jet Elijah Campbell listed as a backup but primarily used as a special teamer. Fifth round rookie Dante Trader started against the Bills in week 3 as the Dolphins opened up in a three-safety look, but he ended up playing just 13 snaps. Ifeatu Melifonwu is also on the roster but he’s been inactive.

At cornerback, starter Storm Duck has been injured to further weaken an undermanned unit. He’s only played one game so far and is not back in practice yet. Veteran Rasul Douglas was signed at the end of August to provide some stability. He’s been starting along with Jack Jones but Miami has not yet intercepted a pass or forced a fumble yet this season.

Fifth round rookie Jason Marshall has been the main slot cornerback so far but he’s also not been practicing this week. In his absence, this could be somewhere Fitzpatrick’s versatility comes in handy, but Cornell Armstrong has also seen some time in the slot.

Ethan Bonner and Juju Brents are also available to provide cornerback depth off the bench.

Special Teams

Miami’s kicker Jason Sanders is currently on injured reserve so they’ve been elevating ex-Jet Riley Patterson, who is perfect through three games, from the practice squad. They will need to sign him to the active roster for this game because they’ve used up his three standard elevations. Sanders will be eligible to return next week.

Punter Jake Bailey is a solid veteran option with unremarkable career and season numbers. He’s in his third year in Miami after four in New England.

In the return game, Malik Washington is listed as the primary return man on both kickoffs and punts. His 45-yard kickoff return after the Jets took a late lead last year set up Sanders’ field goal to send the game to overtime and he has already had a 74-yard punt return touchdown this year.

Eskridge has actually been getting more of the work on kickoff returns and he had a 54-yard return already this season. Wright is also listed as a reserve on kickoffs with Hill and Waddle the backups on punts.

In coverage, Miami lost most of their most productive tacklers from last year and already gave up a kick return touchdown to New England. Campbell, a primary gunner, and Hill are consistent contributors in coverage but their leading special teams tackler so far this season is actually Fitzpatrick.

The Jets need to get more out of the screen game

imagn-27140362.jpg

One of the big surprises for me during the first three weeks of the season is how little the Jets have gotten from the screen game on offense. Before the start of the regular season, I named it as one of the big four areas the Jets needed to exploit to put together a productive offensive season. With Justin Fields in at quarterback the first two weeks, the Jets barely threw a screen.

I counted four last week with Tyrod Taylor. Unfortunately, those plays barely amounted to anything.

Sometimes there are concepts that look better on the chalkboard in the coach’s office than they do on the field.

You can understand why the Jets would want to utilize the athleticism of Armand Membou. There are limits to the types of blocks you can ask a player to hit, though.

On this play, the Jets have Breece Hall motion out of the backfield. The ball is going to him on a screen.

screen1.png

Membou has to go a long way to hit a block.

screen2.png

It’s just too much to ask.

screen3.png

You can see it all here.

View Link

Later on it’s Arian Smith going across the formation.

screen4.png

He gets a screen thrown to him. Membou has to run an even longer way.

screen5.png

Again it’s too far.

screen6.png

On this play, the Jets offensive line started to run block. It made me wonder for a second whether this was called a run play, and Taylor switched it on his own because he thought Smith had more room to work. Membou is on his way out to block before the ball is thrown, though. It looks like a screen all the way after a few viewings.

View Link

The Jets aren’t overloaded with talent at wide receiver so they might need to get the screen game working for this offense to function well. They will need to be more realistic about what their players can execute going forward, though.
