Islanders Anxiety – Episode 363 – Pixie Dust Everywhere

Islanders_Anxiety_Art___2023.jpg

Mike and Dan are relaxed and excited as the Islanders win three in a row and put themselves in good position for both the playoffs and the NHL Trade Deadline.

We were worried that going into two places they never win in – Montreal and Columbus – and coming back to face the rabid Panthers at home could be a significant hill for the Islanders to climb immediately after the Olympic break. But behind the Disney Dads, Anders Lee and J-G Pageau, and the literally unbelievable Matthew Schaefer, they won all three in uncharacteristically exciting fashion and have us thinking that something special is going on here. Going down 0-2 in each of them isn’t ideal, but coming back to get points and create separation between them and the teams chasing them means everything right now as teams enter their final 24 game stretch.

The wins also mean that the games this week in California against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks have just a little less weight on them. If they can keep the streak going, they have a real chance to lock things up long before the season’s final week, which is huge departure from the last few seasons.

Later, we look ahead to Friday’s NHL Trade Deadline and how the Islanders have positioned themselves to do something big. Adding around the edges might be okay in most seasons, but if they can find some bigger fish to relieve the pressure on their current leaders, they might really scare the rest of the field.

Finally, we pay our respects to two great NHL voices that we have lost recently.

How can you not be entertained? | Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images

The Islanders are headed West, where the Kings are falling but the Ducks are surging again. A few bounces here or there and they could be beginning this trip under a dark cloud, but the comebacks and magical individual efforts to win the last three games have them six points ahead of the next Metro foe (Washington) and on par with the Atlantic-dominated wild card spots.

Meanwhile, the trade deadline is Friday afternoon and everyone’s waiting for the first shoe to drop.

The Islanders and their five-game win streak touched down in California and got their skating legs going at practice Tuesday. A back-to-back begins tonight in Anaheim, which will be playing its own back-to-back after losing at home last night to the Avalanche.

Ducks 5 (EN), Islanders 1: Toss it out

gettyimages-2264856446.jpg

Lotta, lotta orange. | Getty Images

The California trip got off to a thud of a start with a 5-1 loss in Anaheim as the Islanders could not get much going and could not finish nor get better looks against the Ducks’ backup-backup goalie.

Ville Husso made 42 saves, but the game really turned in the first period as the Islanders gave up three quick goals, the first one on a Ducks power play, to erase the Anders Lee power play goal that opened scoring.

Trailing 3-1 going into the first intermission, the Isles outshot Anaheim 13-4 in the second period (though that looks more lopsided than it was) but still couldn’t get back on the board.

When Ryan Poehling scored early in the third to make it 4-1, that was about it. With Mathew Schaefer’s regular partner Ryan Pulock out, Poehling’s goal was another occasion where Schaefer and Scott Mayfield were not in sync heading back to the D zone, though Calum Ritchie was the guiltiest party leaving Poehling all alone in front with time to beat David Rittich.

Islanders News: Trade Deadline Day thread

gettyimages-2244245861.jpg

We’re still here…right? | NHLI via Getty Images

On the NHL’s trade deadline day, the New York Islanders are in playoff position but far from contender position. They have a Vezina candidate (favorite?) goalie and a Calder favorite who have driven an exciting season above expectations. Their power play is abysmal, and their overall team defense often leaves us scratching our head. They have a couple of older UFAs who are very much contributing to where they are, including a longtime captain who is climbing the franchise’s games played and goal list.

There is value to a playoff appearance, both financially and culturally. And maybe they can get there without making any other changes. (They added Ondrej Palat and Carson Soucy before the Olympic break, who fall into the “veterans settling rotating-cast positions” category.)

GM Mathieu Darche is surely balancing all of this as the marketplace hits its final hours. The Isles certainly shouldn’t be big-game hunting unless there are prime players with term, but then what is the cost of that?

Two names that keep coming up around the league and in fan debates Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, both in the first half of long-term deals with full no-trade protection. The Blues are reportedly asking exorbitant prices for each, and that seems to be the point: They don’t need to trade either — it’s not a firesale — so they are in “make me an offer I can’t refuse” mode. Sounds like they went down that road with the Sabres on multiple players, including Colton Parayko (for a first and last summer’s 9th overall pick), and the player blocked the trade anyway.

Unless the Blues shift their approach in fallout or re-evaluation of what’s happening there, I can’t see a package from the Islanders that makes sense for them and meets the Blues’ price. The Isles still need to think long term, not this spring, so there may be opportunities to revisit a bigger acquisition this summer.

Here's where it sits for #Isles/Darche
– Continues having talks on multiple possibilities
– He does not like acquiring rentals
– Dealing 2025 first-rounders Aitcheson, Eklund likely a no go
– Struck early on Soucy/Palat before prices skyrocketed and said to be fine if that's it

— Andrew Gross (@AGrossNewsday) March 6, 2026

If they weren’t in playoff position — truly in position, not just chasing in the wild card bubble — it would be easy to conclude they should sell Anders Lee and J-G Pageau. But the team’s play (thanks, Ilya and Schaef!) has put them in a different position. Tere’s no indication either has been on the market this season, and it’s completely defensible for a team competing in playoff position with 19 games to go to keep two key players rather than deflate the roster.

Islanders News

  • About last night: Ugly enough to make you doubt whether this team will, in the end, reach the postseason. Hopefully it was and remains their worst showing of the season. [LHH | Newsday | Post]
  • Trade deadline? Yeah, there are jitters. [Newsday]
  • The Devils put Max Tsyplakov (and two others) on waivers. He continued to get the same amount of ice time and same (lack of) production, with zero points in nine games, 7-9 minutes per night. [Devils]

Elsewhere

  • In a bit of a shock and a handsome return, the Capitals send John Carlson to Anaheim. [NHL]
  • Yet another Luke Schenn trade: He and Logan Stanley head from Winnipeg to Buffalo. [NHL]
  • David Perron returns to the Red Wings…maybe: The Senators get a 4th if the injured winger plays a game, and it’s a 2nd if he appears in half their playoff games through two rounds. [Sportsnet]
  • Ottawa, meanwhile, took Warren Foegele from the Kings. [CP]
  • 38-year-old Jeff Petry goes from Florida to Minnesota for a 7th-round pick, the universal currency of “we just want you to leave.” [NHL]
  • How many times have we seen this before: Evgeni Malkin losing his cool. This time he gets an ejection for slashing Rasmus Dahlin — playing the role of Travis Hamonic in Malkin’s nightmares — in the head. [Sportsnet]

Islanders re-sign Pageau, get B. Schenn in trade for Drouin, Colorado 1st, Gidlof

gettyimages-1239878063.jpg

Come with us. | NHLI via Getty Images

Well this was all most unexpected.

Amid rumors of New York Islanders interest in Robert Thomas or Jordan Kyrou of the St. Louis Blues, who were reportedly requiring exorbitant prices for those locked-in prime-age centerpieces, the Isles instead sent a 1st-round pick for 34-year-old Blues captain Brayden Schenn — a center who has declined into a winger and part-time cener in his later age — and announced the re-signing of 33-year-old center J-G Pageau for three more seasons at a reported $4.85 million per season.

There’s a little more to it, of course: the 1st going to St. Louis is likely a late one, as it’s the pick they acquired from the Avalanche, who are a favorite to go three or four rounds deep in the playoffs. The Blues also took back Jonathan Drouin (and his $4M cap hit through next season), who has just not worked out since his offseason signing. And the Isles sent 6’7” goalie prospect Marcus Gidlof, their 5th-round pick (147th overall) from 2024. And a third-round pick. It feels like a lot.

Schenn had to waive his no-trade clause to accept the trade — so, yay! he likes us now, despite being on his no-trade list before — but he is signed for two more seasons at a $6.5 million AAV.

If I was nervous about what the Isles might send to the Blues for Kyrou, a 27-year-old winger signed for four more years at $8.125 million (I was), I am uninspired by this move.

Schenn is beloved, a heart-and-soul guy with fire in his belly. He can still snipe from the wing (though Mathieu Darche said it’s possible he’ll play center, where he does win faceoffs), he will fight anyone, and he’ll fit the group and be popular with fans on his good nights. You will see him get a LOUD ovation from Blues fans when the Isles visit St. Louis on Tuesday night. But he is experiencing the age decline that comes for all of us, and the Isles just took on that decline with a $6.5 million cap hit for the next two seasons.

Still, did the Islanders improve the current roster, by removing Drouin and adding Schenn? Yes, yes they did. This season’s ride continues.

The Lighter Side

As luck would have it, both the Isles and Blues are in San Jose, two ships passing in the night. Schenn had 90 minutes to run into people and make a decision.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! – Episode 82 – Chad Johnson & Michal Neuvirth (with guest Joe Yerdon)

Weird_Islanders_art.jpg

Along with Sabres reporter Joe Yerdon, we remember Chad Johnson & Michal Neuvirth, back-up goalies who were traded for each other at the deadline but didn’t help the Islanders much at all.

On paper, Chad Johnson was the perfect addition to what looked to be a quality Islanders team in 2014. He was coming off a great season backing up Tuukka Rask in Boston and should have done the same for Isles starter Jaroslav Halak. But when called upon, Johnson was consistently inconsistent, and made giving Halak a break here and there a dangerous proposition.

Meanwhile in Buffalo, goalie Michal Neuvirth wasn’t having any fun playing on a team going nowhere but the draft lottery (again). His numbers were solid despite the roster around him, so a swap was made that everyone hoped would free one team of its biggest problem and solve another problem for a goalie who had shown skill in the recent past. On paper, the trade made a lot of sense.

Sadly, they don’t play the games on paper, and both Johnson and Neuvirth became bewildering footnotes in Islanders history. Joe helps us understand both goalies as people and the circumstances surrounding the trade from the Sabres’ side of things. We also ponder what makes a goalie good, how two proverbial “tidy pieces of business” could go so horribly awry and how to forgive a guy who was barely a villain to begin with.

Thanks again to Joe for coming on. We’ve wanted to get him for a long time and not only was he as great as expected but this ended up being the perfect time and the perfect subjects. Follow him everywhere you can on all the socials and at his website, NotedHockey.com.

We have a Weird Islanders Extra Patreon exclusive bonus episode with Joe as well so check that out, too.

WEIRD BONUS MATERIAL

  • Fun Fact: Chad Johnson was a Hobey Baker Trophy finalist as a standout goalie for the University of Alaska – Fairbanks.
  • In 2014, the Islanders needed a backup for Jaro Halak. They found one in Johnson, who had put up good numbers backing up Tuukka Rask in Boston (after stints with a bunch of teams). This LHH article includes sage goaltending wisdom from a certain blogger-turned-actual-NHL-general-manager.
  • Michal Neuvirth’s NHL career was a wild ride. After leading the Hershey Bears to back-to-back Calder Cups and winning an AHL playoff MVP along the way, he burst on to the scene with the Capitals with a few stellar early seasons. But with injuries and Braden Holtby grabbing the Caps’ crease, Neuvirth was traded to the Sabres for Jaro Halak.
  • There weren’t a ton of highlights of Chad Johnson’s short Islanders tenure, but this 30-save 3-2 win in Boston against his former team stands out as maybe his best performance of the season.
  • Johnson’s time with the Islanders never got on track and he was traded at the deadline to Buffalo for… Michael Neuvirth! That team was good, while Johnson was not.
  • Neuvirth wasn’t happy in Buffalo but played well in the face of one of the most bald-faced tank jobs in NHL history. Eventually, he was traded to the Islanders to back up… Jaro Halak!
  • Sadly, on the morning of his first start with the Sabres, Johnson hurt his ankle, causing him to miss the rest of the season. But he did play the next year as their No. 1 starter (backing him up was future Islander Robin Lehner).
  • There is even less video of Michal Neuvirth playing for the Islanders, but here he is in a 4-3 OT win in Toronto. Not the best performance but he could look good, as on this PK
  • Neuvirth didn’t last long on Long Island, either. Even before free agency began in 2015, he was already talking to a few teams. He found a home in Philly, where he would spend the next and final four seasons of his NHL career.
  • In a rare turn of events, the Islanders lit up Neuvirth in his first game against them as a Flyer, winning 6-1
  • In a 2017 game against the Devils, Neuvirth collapsed in the Flyers’ crease and he was removed from the ice. It was a scary scene that he talks about here.
  • Neuvirth signed a PTO with the Leafs and played at their 2019 training camp. But injuries (and possibly some indifference) led to him getting cut. He then signed a two-year deal with Spartak of the Czech Extraliga, but never played for them due to more injuries.
  • The Sabres were not Johnson’s last stop. All told, he played for eight teams, including Buffalo twice. There are even more teams that held his rights that he didn’t play for. He’s comfortable being called a “journeyman,” which is the best description of his career (this article doesn’t even include his last NHL stop in Anaheim).

What makes a “Weird Islander?”

We’re always open to suggestions about other Weird Islanders to discuss. Remember the criteria. Candidates must fulfill one of the two of the following:

  • Played one (1) season or less for the Islanders or very short stints over multiple seasons.
  • Be a veteran NHLer who is not generally associated with his time on Islanders.

Islanders Gameday: In San Jose with Schenn, #10

gettyimages-2203514241.jpg

Now #92 in your program… | NHLI via Getty Images

The 2025-26 New York Islanders begin the rest of their season with a roster that has three veterans they did not have a couple of months ago. Two of them were once semi-stars but are now in their decline — while carrying cap hits that reflect the former phase than the latter — but Mathieu Darche is betting they will add enough to carry this year’s team forward into securing their playoff position and possibly making a little noise. The impact on following seasons is for another day.

The newest, Brayden Schenn, joins the team for their game in San Jose tonight, where his former Blues teammates beat the Sharks, 3-2 in overtime, despite lobbing only 14 shots on goal.

Newly extended backup Alex Nedeljkovic was in goal for that one, so the Islanders will presumably face Yaroslav Askarov tonight.

Based on the first draft of lines, the Islanders see Schenn as a center, a second-line center, pushing Calum Ritchie to the wing. That might be a subtle improvement as Ritchie adjusts in his rookie season at age 20, but it’s also asking too much a lot of Schenn, who was frequently moved to wing with the Blues over the past few seasons. With the matchups, and J-G Pageau taking on some assignments, maybe it’s more like they have two third lines.

First Islanders Goal picks go here.

Islanders News

“You should see the texts we got from former players, players that have been with him,” says Mathieu Darche in the media availability scrum below. This does not surprise me at all; I’m a fan of Schenn’s game at its peak and his approach even today. The challenge and fear is that was yesteryear. Former players are former players for a reason. Schenn probably gets, and delivers, a boost down the stretch here in this new environment, and freed from the burden of captaining a team that was in full identity crisis.

The impact on following seasons is, again, for another day.

At the beginning of this hotel interview about leaving the Blues, Schenn talks a little bit about excitement for the team and opportunity he’s joining — and later, about he and his brother Luke fielding “probably 45 calls” since 11 p.m. the night before discussing possible trade destinations and logistics with family:

Here’s how they may line up tonight:

I’m actually curious to see if the Isles ever use Schenn in 3-on-3 overtime. You wouldn’t think it from his speed at this age, but he can be effective and finish coming down the wing in that role.

  • More from Schenn on joining the Islanders, and the Darche-Other-Schenn connection. [Isles]
  • Our reactions (and comment fights) to the trade and the extension of J-G Pageau. [LHH]
  • Another bit of trivia and orientation: Schenn will wear the #10 he’s worn at every NHL stop — save for his first callup in Philly — while Simon Holmstrom will take #92, while Lou Lamoriello rolls over in his retirement chair.

Islanders 2, Sharks 1 (OT): Horvat winner keeps Isles perfect in overtime

gettyimages-2264842205.jpg

Who’s gonna be the hero? | NHLI via Getty Images

Bo Horvat scored with a nifty backhand on a breakaway as the Islanders continued their insane overtime record (9-0) and salvaged a win from their California swing, defeating the San Jose Sharks, 2-1.

Brayden Schenn made his Islanders debut and was a presence for both the regulation goal for and against, settling in next to Ondrej Palat and the center he’s temporarily bumped to wing, Cal Ritchie. Wearing the #10 ceded to him by new #92 Simon Holmstrom, Schenn was credited with winning 6 of his 14 faceoffs, a blocked shot and a check in 17:26 of ice time.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

The first two periods were not super eventful, though that in itself is a big improvement over the previous two games. There were a few good saves from both star goalies. Tony DeAngelo broke the ice with a shot through traffic midway through the first period. The Isles were victimized by super sophomore Macklin Celebrini finding space just 33 seconds into the second period to tie it at 1-1.

The rest of the second was a standstill, but the Islanders came out with real jump in the third and logged 11 of the first 13 shots. They couldn’t convert though, and every Celebrini rush provided a scare, just as every Matthew Schaefer counter doused the flame.

With time winding down, the Islanders were perhaps gifted with a power play with under four minutes in regulation, when noted pest(ilence) Kiefer Sherwood took a run at Mat Barzal on the Isles forward’s way to the bench. Barzal got a crosscheck back at him, but perhaps Sherwood’s reputation and prior behavior earned him the only call.

As they always do, however, the Isles completely wasted that power play. There was a TV timeout, and Patrick Roy started the second unit, which promptly skated in offside to burn their 30 seconds.

And worse, the officials gave the Sharks a chance of their own when Pelech held Sherwood’s arm on a counterattack after J-G Pageau failed to get the puck in at the Sharks blueline. The Sharks spent the final 1:28 of regulation on the power play and got a couple of golden chances that required five-star saves from Sorokin.

The power play carried into overtime for about 30 seconds of 4-on-3, but the Isles killed that off with some great anticipatory interceptions by Schaefer.

Horvat’s winner came when things were back to 3-on-3 with a great threaded feed from Schaefer, his 26th assist of the year. He got a step around all three Sharks and slipped a backhand through Yaroslav Askarov’s wickets, which proved a better approach than shooting him in the mask.

It’s Schenn Packing Day as the Islanders finish this road trip Tuesday in St. Louis, where Schenn will get to pick up his things, do a farewell wave and hopefully take two points from his former team.

The win nudges the Islanders into 2nd in the Metro, a point ahead of Pittsburgh, which lost in extra time (as did Columbus). Both have two games in hand on the Isles.

Kings 5, Islanders 3: Chasing their tails

It’s a good thing the Islanders managed three dramatic comeback wins coming out of the Olympic break, because then they headed to southern California and played like doodoo. Actually, their starts and play in SoCal wasn’t that much different from the prior three games, just the bounces and outcomes were a little different.

They followed up a 5-1 loss in Anaheim with a 5-3 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles Thursday. For moments, I had Scott Gordon Era flashbacks, staying up late to watch depressing performances on the West Coast and questioning life choices.

However, this one also had a distinctly Patrick Roy flavor, with a very early goalie pull that provided some surrealist entertainment for the final 8:30 of the game.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

Things got off to a weird start when Ilya Sorokin lost his stick in an encounter with Anze Kopitar, and no Islander bothered to sweep it back to him. Even after the Islanders cleared the zone once and the Kings had the puck at their own blueline with all five Isles skaters between them and Sorokin, no one bothered to retrieve the goal stick from the corner.

Sorokin made a couple of sterling, groin-defying saves without his stick, but then they left Artemi Panarin all alone in front, and the Russian was patient in beating his countryman (no)stick side.

This is just frustrating to see. What the hell were they doing and thinking?

Patience pays off for Panarin 🍞

In DJ Smith’s second game as interim head coach, the Kings committed two too many men penalties in the second period, one with six skaters and one with seven(!). During an in-game interview, Smith took the heat for it while noting “one by the D, one by the forwards” as too eager to get on.

But what’s the risk? The Islanders power play, rarely inspiring, was downright abysmal. The Kings had the best scoring chances on both advantages.

Meanwhile, the defense continues to be mind-boggling, too:

This can’t happen. Like ever. pic.twitter.com/Fnhsg4pmtg

— Rob Taub (@RTaub_) March 6, 2026

Speaking of which, the Kings made it 2-0 late in the second period with the Islanders coverage scrambling all over the place. Carson Soucy was bodied off the puck, did well enough (maybe?) to reach and poke the puck around the boards, but it was intercepted, and Soucy spent the intervening time complaining to the ref while covering no one.

Within a couple minutes, it was 3-0.

The Islanders would get one more power play to try to get back into the game, and while they at least gained the zone a few times — progress! — they still posed no threats.

HOWEVER…a J-G Pageau faceoff win and a Bo Horvat bullet led to the all-too-rare faceoff goal with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Horvat put everything into the shot and whipped it in off the far post. Impressive.

At least Bo Horvat gives a shit to shoot pic.twitter.com/mUjFjwTZ0e

— Rob Taub (@RTaub_) March 6, 2026

The Islanders followed that up by coming out in the third with a little more pep, but Veteran Experienced Ondrej Palat took an offensive zone slashing penalty, and the Kings cashed in on the ensuing power play to make it 4-1 just 2:30 into the period.

Then Ilya Sorokin sailed a puck over the glass to put the Kings on the power play again, and it looked like we were in for more pain. But that was a failure of the imagination, because I neglected to envision the classic Pageau-Adam Pelech shorthanded 2-on-1, which Pelech finished like an opportunistic sniper to cut the lead to 4-2.

Adam Pelech just scored shorthanded lmao pic.twitter.com/VEwXrXM7ha

— Rob Taub (@RTaub_) March 6, 2026

Did that make it a game again? It did not. A 3-on-2-ish from the Kings four minutes later restored the three-goal lead.

Patrick Roy pulled Sorokin for a sixth attacker with over eight minutes left, which provided some late-night entertainment at least. The Islanders mostly controlled the puck and were able to make some goal-saving blocks on Kings empty-net tries.

With 1:59 left and after a few more blocked empty-net tries, the Isles finally got one through. Matthew Schaefer’s point shot was deflected by Emil Heineman past Darcy Kuemper to make it 5-3.

That’s where things would finish, after one final empty-net block by Schaefer. Sorokin got himself a nice long rest. The Isles got zero points from their southern tour.

Islanders Anxiety – Episode 364 – Breakfast with the Islanders

Islanders_Anxiety_Art___2023.jpg

Dan is joined by Lighthouse Hockey’s Jenny Berman to discuss the acquisition of Brayden Schenn and the games surrounding this season’s Trade Deadline.

It was a wild weekend for the Islanders, who dropped two massive duds in Anaheim and LA, then made a shocking last minute trade for the St. Louis Blues captain on Friday’s deadline that no one saw coming. After speaking with Schenn in person at the hotel both the Blues and Islanders were staying at, he agreed to waive his no-movement clause to join the veteran-heavy squad as they march towards the playoffs. The trade plus the re-signing of J-G Pageau was puzzling (and pricey) but Mathieu Darche’s post-deadline presser helped bring the plan into more focus. The deal also ended the Islanders’ Jonathan Drouin saga, which is probably a relief to him, the team and, in an odd way, Jenny’s dad.

A day later, the Islanders got two massive points in San Jose thanks to Bo Horvat’s latest OT goal. They’re still in the driver’s seat in the Eastern Conference playoff race, but things are still very much up-in-the-air for the few teams that haven’t sunk to the bottom of the standings. The week ahead has more opportunities to pick up valuable points and finally come back home for much of the rest of the season.

Fresh off a plane from Singapore, where she spent an enjoyable but sweltering week, Jenny gives us her thoughts on the games, the trades, the number exchanges, some other deals around the league and on following the NHL from the other side of the world (or on a plane). Thanks again to Jenny for stepping in after a long day. She’s earned a vacation from her vacation.

We also take a call from a “Mike from Long Island,” who has many feelings on the newest Islander and how the deal went down.

The Islanders finish their four-game road trip with a stop to help Brayden Schenn pack up in St. Louis, where the Blues are returning from a lottery-spoiling perfect four-game western road trip of their own. In full selloff mode, the Blues somehow took out the Kraken, Sharks, Kings and finally the Ducks, with a 4-0 win last night.

Jonatha Drouin even scored for them, naturally.

Islanders vs. Blues Gameday: Road trip finale, Darche talks deadline

“Whatever dude, one day you’ll work for ME.” | Getty Images

The Islanders’ final out-of-time-zone road trip comes to a conclusion tonight in St. Louis, with a golden chance to go .500 on a four-game trip that began with a couple of stinkers in Southern California.

The Blues are in the middle of a cratering season that has brought Brayden Schenn to Long Island. However, they are now on a 4-0 post-Olympic run — including a 4-0 win over the Ducks, with a Jonathan Drouin slumpbuster — that has lifted them a few points above the not-Vancouver line, sending the fanbase into panic over the potential spoiling of their lottery odds. Their youth movement is underway, with Jake Neighbors (who praised Schenn’s influence on his way out) a young power forward now getting a letter, and 2023 first-rounders Otto Stenberg and Theo Lindstein getting called up before this game.

Ilya Sorokin will get the start for the Isles. This one is a TNT/HBO broadcast.

Islanders 4, Blues 3 (OT): Barzal caps 3-goal comeback

gettyimages-2265341765.jpg

The new guy had to say some goodbyes first. | NHLI via Getty Images

The Islanders’ incredible overtime magic continued with their 10th OT winner of the season, this time built off the foundation of a three-goal comeback and a rare double-power-play conversion from a team whose power play can rarely shoot straight.

Mat Barzal finished the 4-3 win in St. Louis, using his speed to wrongfoot forward Jordan Kyrou for the overtime tally at 2:11. But the Isles only got there thanks to some good fortune, good power play passing and a timely coach’s challenge that prevented a 4-0 deficit.

The Isles had outshot the Blues badly in the first period and to start the second, but they allowed too many golden chances and were behind 3-0 just over midway through the game. It looked like it was 4-0 when Robert Thomas put in another golden chance, but it was overturned by video review after the Isles challenged for offside. Before the challenge, it even looked like the Isles might’ve been considering putting David Rittich in, but thankfully they didn’t, because Sorokin’s elite services later proved necessary.

That overturned goal was the fortune teller’s turning point if not the actual turning point; it wasn’t until much later in the second period (17:50) that J-G Pageau finally got the Isles on the board. With the way the Isles had generated chances prior to that point (still outshooting the Blues 29-14 through 40 minutes), it felt like that gave them a fighting chance going into the third.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

But who would’ve expected that chance to be cashed in by not one, but two power play goals? Honestly, when Pavel Buchnevich was called for a double-minor high-sticking on Calum Ritchie five minutes into the third, my first thought was, “Great, there goes four more minutes of comeback time wasted.”

Instead, the Isles power play moved the puck around and retained it along the boards decently enough — though not as well as the Blues, who just missed restoring their three-goal lead on a power play late in the second. Their persistence was rewarded when Jack Finley (son of former Islander and Blue Jeff Finley) accidentally pushed a loose puck over the line as he and another Blue battled with Bo Horvat and Cal Ritchie in the crease.

The goal was credited to Ritchie at 5:52, erasing the first minor and bringing the Isles to within one. They pulled off a proper power play sequence to get the next one, Horvat finishing a tic-tac-toe play in the slot from Ritchie and Barzal.

— Islanders Videos (@SNY_Islanders) March 11, 2026
Cal Ritchie (PPG, PPA) said it was a matter of simplifying things on the man advantage (2 for 4). Patrick Roy said that entailed trying to move the puck quicker, which he said #Isles did, certainly on back to back PPG in third period on Pavel Buchnevich four-minute high stick

— Andrew Gross (@AGrossNewsday) March 11, 2026

That left it tied 3-3, paving the way for some nervy moments but mostly two teams who were fine with tossing a coin for the extra point.

Overtime was your usual cagey affair, and Barzal wisely awaited the right moment to turn on the jets just after Kyrou came on the ice (and after receiving the puck from Brayden Schenn, who was shadowed by his trade counterpart Jonathan Drouin on the play). As Darren Pang said on the TNT broadcast with Butch Goring and Brendan Burke*, “Barzal going up against Kyrou, not exactly a Selke-nominated player.”

*At the game, staring into space as I waited for my daughter to use the restroom, I was startled to see Burke and Goring in line for the men’s room among the masses. I knew the game was on TNT but didn’t realize they had the call — didn’t even realize Butch does TNT games?! — so I was disoriented but happy, and take full credit for the comeback that ensued.

That burst of speed and 3-on-3 matchup allowed Barzal to bait Kyrou outside before cutting inside and firing upstairs from the slot. Game over.

MAT BARZAL 😱

He dashes in for a magnificent goal in @Energizer OT! pic.twitter.com/NKdDGPrh4l

— NHL (@NHL) March 11, 2026

Overall, it was a mostly well-earned two points for the Isles with the final shots tally 49-23. But many of their shots did not have the desired traffic or rebound presence, while they let up some inexcusable openings on the Blues goal. That included a 4-on-1 counterattack to open scoring for the Blues, and a wide open backdoor Jimmy Snuggerud after Scott Mayfield, Carson Sousy and Ritchie were all mesmerized watching Thomas in the left wing corner. Dylan Halloway’s goal to make it 2-0 was at least a fantastic shot that stunned Ilya Sorokin, but the Blues forward was allowed to much space to dance into the slot unimpeded.

Schenn’s Farewell

What a crazy, whirlwind week for new Islander Brayden Schenn! Switching teams without switching hotels in San Jose, getting one game in (an OT win, it’s how we do) before heading right back to his home for the past decade, then taking in a tribute and thank you after a parting that he did not request. With three kids, including a newborn, he’ll surely settle in on Long Island just fine.

Brayden Schenn said he's normally able to stay on top of his emotions. But he admits reception from Blues' crowd, actually, almost everything associated with today, got to him and deeply touched him.

On the ice, he looked a little more comfortable, logged five shots in 17:06 and won seven of 10 faceoffs. He had an early chance to get on the board that required a stretching stop from Joel Hofer. And for the record book, he gets the assist on the OT winner, even if all he did was hand it off to Barzal on his own way off for a change.

That was huge, getting not one but two points from an 0-3 deficit in a game the hockey gods tried to steal from them. That pulls them even with Pittsburgh, which has a game in hand and picked up an OTL point tonight.

The Isles head home from the trip 2-2 thanks to some OT magig. They’ll have a home back-to-back vs. L.A., which beat them too easily last week, and Calgary, which lost 4-0 tonight in Manhattan.

With an extra day between games and preceding a rare home back-to-back, it’s a good day to sit back and relish the joy, the rarity and surreal fact that the Islanders are 10-0 in games decided in overtime this year. Mathew Barzal’s streaking goal in St. Louis was the latest addition to the chronicles, largely made possible by a consistent dose of Matthew Schaefer and Ilya Sorokin.
