Islanders Anxiety – Episode 360 – Presented by Benihana

Islanders_Anxiety_Art___2023.jpg

Mike and Dan recap the Islanders’ wheezing last games and take stock of where the team sits at the Olympic break before enjoying a dessert of Ranger Piece Theater.

The Islanders did what we asked last week and grabbed at least four points. Too bad they looked mostly lousy while doing it. So while their comeback against the Penguins and a theft from the Devils were helpful and kept them in third in the Metro, they also didn’t offer a lot in the way of encouragement for the stretch run. The bottom half of the lineup provides almost no offensive support and the top half and the defense is constantly in flux thanks to a coach who seems out of ideas.

Still, we don’t want to lose sight of the fun times despite the dangers ahead. Few expected the Islanders to be in a playoff berth this late in the season (if at all) so we want to take the good with the bad. Next week, we’ll dive a little deeper into individual player performances, especially two the Islanders might regret not doing more with if they don’t come out of the break hot.

Meanwhile, we always have time to laugh at the Rangers, whose GM and captain have very little to say about where the franchise is and why their fans should still care. Fortunately, it feels like they’ll both be around for a while so they’ll have plenty of time to come up with their next blast of hot air.

This podcast is presented by Benihana, the new official hibachi partner of the New York Islanders.

Islanders Memories: Loudest moments at the Coliseum

gettyimages-1197342398.jpg

Earth shook.

Was Nassau Coliseum even louder during some 2000s Resurrection Moments than it was during the dynasty’s greatest moments? We’ll never know for sure, but a couple threads on Twitter elicited “loudest I ever heard that building” sentiments, though the Cup heyday and these other moments are a generation or two apart.

There was a release, to be sure, when the “NHL’s next great dynasty” (as Stan Fischler pegged them in 1976) finally reached its destiny, starting with the Bobby Nystrom overtime goal. And a case could be made for the decibel level following Ray Ferraro’s OT winners during his magical ‘93.

I wonder, then, with that glorious history behind them, and the torturous ‘90s years — 1993 excluded — casting an oppressive shadow, if the Shawn Bates and Anthony Beauvillier overtime goals tapped into a more primal roar, at least in the memory of those who lived them?

Where were you????#isles pic.twitter.com/oysPjLLEJE

— ICENET (@IslesICENET) February 9, 2026

This is not scientific, and it doesn’t really matter anyway, but for completely non-equalized sound comparison, or really just to give yourself a jolt of adrenaline or three, here are three massive moments in Nassau Coliseum history.

The 2002 series against Toronto had the added venom of the Leafs being such absolute, dirty shitheads on top of it being almost a decade since the Isles had competed in a playoff series.

That’s the Islanders’ retrospective version, and the production music kind of interferes with the crowd audio. Here’s the ESPN2 version, which captures more of the pure audio and the announcers are positively giddy about the atmosphere. (Bonus points for capturing Gary Roberts whining to the refs about the call somehow.)

(By the way, Weird Islanders guest Pinholes Graham had a great look at this series back in 2022.)

Then there’s the Beau (not Bo) goal, the last goal at Nassau Coliseum, forcing a Game 7 against the Lightning and ensuring that, even if they didn’t win that one to advance to their first Cup final in four decades, it at least closed the Coliseum in proper fashion.

Sometimes I still can’t believe this happened, 68 seconds into overtime (mercifully quick after a night of tension), and I wonder how that kid being hoisted by his dad next to the penalty box is doing today. Damn, what a moment:

But come on, nothing touches the OG, right? Part of the fun of Islanders’ playoff history is that non-star players like Bobby Nystrom and Ken Morrow didn’t just have one heroic moment, they had multiple, memorable OT goals:

As an extra time-wasting spiritually fulfilling bonus, here’s every playoff OT goal through 2021:

Anyway, the present-day Isles are off for three weeks but the Olympics start soon. Enjoy your day.

Well now just Czech this Olympian out. | NHLI via Getty Images

The NHL break continues but men’s hockey begins today at the Olympics, with Group B featuring Slovakia-Finland (10:30 a.m. EST) and Sweden vs. hosts Italy (3:00 p.m. EST).

There are three groups that will do round-robin in the preliminary round, and the U.S. has the relatively light Group C assignment with House of Frans Denmark, Latvia and Germany.

But first, a few Islanders bits:

  • Czech teammates love Ondrej Palat. [Post]
  • Sticking with the Czech(ia), Tomas Poletin is doing well in his WHL rookie season, adjusting to (and liking) North American hockey, and enjoying friendship with David Rittich. [Isles]
  • Others in a Prospect Report: Danny (don’t call me Brock) Nelson and Quinn (don’t call me Jeff) Finley head to head, plus more Nurmi and Dmitri Gamzin. [Isles]
  • In their final pre-Olympics Islanders Anxiety podcast, Dan and Mike were unimpressed by how the Isles finished, but they don’t want to overlook how fun this season has been thus far. [LHH]

Olympic Openers: Bo & Brock shine

Bo knows goals. | AFP via Getty Images

He’s not ours anymore, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate Brocktober in February.

The first couple of days in Olympics men’s hockey produced predictable results, with the top-rated teams rolling against less-heralded opponents. Canada brushed Czechia aside while Jordan Binnington pitched a shutout to temper concerns that his NHL season results would continue when he backs the most talented squad ever assembled:

  • New York Islanders center Bo Horvat also scored in the 5-0 win.
  • On the U.S. side, Brock Nelson was all over the Americans’ 5-1 win over Latvia, with two goals that counted, one that was called off due to Olympics crease rules, plus an offside that erased a teammate’s, a post, and more.
  • Nelson’s Olympic debut earned teammates’ praise. [NHL]
  • I’m pulling for Nelson rather than any individual team. I kind of agree with this column that the “gold or bust” pressure for Canada, USA and Sweden sucks some of the joy out of this — there’s really no reason for hockey’s best-on-best to be at the Olympics if not for joy. [Athletic]
  • Bourne: 12 thoughts fawning over Canada. [Sportsnet]

  • Switzerland not being a very neutral neighbor, smacks France around. (I honestly never knew Timo Meier was Swiss.) [NHL]
  • Something something Snoop Dogg. [NHL]

Friday’s matches include Sweden-Finland plus three mismatches in Italy-Slovakia, Canada-Switzerland, and France-Czechia.

The Olympic men’s hockey round robin is complete, with things generally playing out as expected save for a couple of exceptions. One of those is Sweden, though “didn’t win your group” is not exactly an emergency crisis like, say, losing to Latvia would be.

Back on the home front, non-Olympic NHLers (including all Russians, heh) are still on break as teams cannot reconvene for official practices until after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

In the meantime though, hey, share your data for the privilege of answering Ondrej Palat trivia. [Isles]

  • Border war: Italy and Switzerland will meet in the smaller rink, “inside a warehouse.” Oh, the glamor of the Olympics. [NHL]
  • But there are some other fun matchups Tuesday among the teams that didn’t receive a bye: France vs. Germany should be no contest (expect Draisaitl to sweep through Belgium to get around feeble French defense); the Czechs and Danes have a rematch of their OT round robin meeting that House of Frans won; and of course Latvia will look to repeat longshot history against Sweden. The prize for winning is to play again Wednesday against a rested favorite. [NHL]

Islanders Anxiety – Episode 361 – These Bums Have a Chance

Islanders_Anxiety_Art___2023.jpg

Mike and Dan run down the Islanders lineup to say something positive about each player and how they’ve contributed to the good overall season they’ve had so far.

We heard some feedback that the last episode came off a little too nervous or negative, so we challenged ourselves to accentuate the plusses of every position player. For some, it was easy. Players like Ilya Sorokin, Matthew Schaefer, Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal have been getting rightfully praised all season, while Adam Pelech, Ryan Pulock and J-G Pageau seem to have regained their former forms. Legacy players like Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee have shown they still have a place on this team, while newer guys like Emil Heineman and Cal Ritchie have only scratched the surface of what they’re capable of.

For others, the task was slightly more difficult. In a few cases, we wonder if the team is just ready to move on despite what skills the player may possess because they’re just not a fit. Regardless, we’re able to isolate their strengths or things we think they can bring in the future, even if it’s not evident this season.

This was a fun exercise to do during the Olympic break. Next week, we’ll look ahead to their first few games back.

Olympic Quarterfinal Day; Islanders back at practice

gettyimages-2261271726.jpg

But it’s not fair, he cheated. | Getty Images

Here we are! Well, sort of…almost. The Islanders are now legally allowed to reconvene, while Wednesday at the Olympics offers a full day of men’s ice hockey quarterfinals:

  • Germany vs. Slovakia
  • Czechia vs. Canada (Islander vs. Islander!)
  • Switzerland vs. Finland
  • Sweden vs. USA

The U.S. and Sweden likely gave themselves the toughest mutual matchup, thanks to Sweden’s round-robin slip and the U.S. failure to run up the score against each opponent as drastically as Canada did. #OlympicSpirit

It has always seemed to be Canada’s tournament to lose — or maybe Canada’s goaltenders’ tournament to lose — and the Czechs have shown little indication they pose an upset threat. The lost 5-0 to the red leafs in the opener, and also lost to Denmark in OT before beating the House of Frans, 3-2 in the knockout round.

Anyway, we’re now nine days away from the Islanders resuming their NHL schedule in Montreal, the start of 24 games in 48 days. To hold us over while stealing glances at the quarterfinals:

  • Prospect Report: A flashy and brilliant Cole Eiserman assist, narrated by the most Bahston of Bahston sounds you can imagine. [Isles]
  • What did the non-Horvat/Palat Islanders do with their time off? And how did they enjoy the first day back? [Isles]
  • Patrick Roy needs to get creative and stay on top of the non-Olympic Isles. [Newsday]
  • The value of the Isles’ first-round pick from Colorado in the Brock Nelson trade looks like it will be waaaaay late in the round. [THN]
  • It’s the final run for a lot of Swede vets…hopefully it ends today. [NHL]
  • The AHL suspended some guys for PED use. [TSN]

Canada, USA dodge disaster as Olympic semifinals set

They appear happy. | Getty Images

The practically pre-ordained dream final of Canada vs. USA in Olympic men’s hockey is still on the table after both tournament favorites needed overtime to avoid disaster in the quarterfinals.

Canada erased a late Czech one-goal lead (from current Islander Ondrej Palat, lest you forget) to then win on a Mitch Marner OT winner, while the U.S. outlasted Sweden and advanced on a Quinn Hughes OT winner.

In the other quarters, Slovakia continued its sleeper rise while easing past Germany — they get to face USA next — while Finland broke Switzerland’s heart with a comeback win, earning the Finns a meeting with the possibly Crosby-less(?) Canucks.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! – Episode 81 – Rob Davison (with guest John Cullen)

Weird_Islanders_art.jpg

Along with comedian, podcaster and new author John Cullen, we remember Rob Davison, who had one major moment against a marquee opponent in his very short stint on Long Island.

Like a lot of defensive defensemen, Rob Davison was not a player most people would remember. His job was preventing goals, not scoring them, for a very good San Jose Sharks team in the early 2000’s. When he was dealt to the Islanders at the tail end of the 2007-08 season, it barely registered with the fanbase and was more about filling a giant injury hole than anything else. He arrived late to his first game and would eventually leave the team after that playoff-free season.

BUT! In those 19-games, Rob Davison – of all people – scored a goal so crazy, so unbelievable, so memorable that we’re still talking about it 25 years later. In an otherwise pointless game at Nassau Coliseum between two teams going nowhere, Davison launched the puck 190-feet down the ice and ended up with one of the most ludicrous shorthanded goals in NHL history, forever tying him to former Sharks teammate Vesa Toskala in a moment of infamy no one who watched it will ever forget.

Instead of finding a Sharks fan to talk about Davison, we asked John – a fan of the hated Maple Leafs – to talk about that game, that goal and Toskala’s legacy in Toronto. Ironically, we all find a degree of sympathy for the goalie who faced an impossible play and whiffed on it the way just about anyone would have. We talk about his reaction to his friend Davison scoring a goal like that on him, and about how trading Davison helped the Sharks draft an upgrade, who has a goofy connection to the Islanders decades later. We also enjoy a rarely remembered fact about that famous game (that the Islanders still lost).

We can’t thank John enough for coming on. He’s a very busy man between his many podcasts, his new book – Curling Rocks! – being out (and recording its audio version) and his work for CBC covering curling at the Olympics. Check out his shows Broomgate, A Curling Scandal, What is…? A Jeopardy! Podcast (with Emily Heller), The POD Kast (with Bryan Quinby) and Blocked Party (with Stefen Heck).

A Weird Islanders Extra! bonus episode with us and John discussing the Islanders/Leafs/Tavares thing was released back in January.

WEIRD BONUS MATERIAL

  • After 176 mostly-quiet games and one Western Conference with the San Jose Sharks, Davison was traded to the Islanders for a seventh round pick that, ironically, turned into Jason Demers, another defenseman who played 200-plus games with the Sharks and an astute observer of the game.
  • On that same day, Garth Snow traded Chris Simon to Minnesota and Marc-Andre Bergeron to Anaheim. Replacing Bergeron with Davison is like replacing a fresh, sweet, juicy apple with an onion (in a complimentary way).
  • This man scored three (3) goals in his NHL career and this, from March 18, 2008, was by far the most memorable one (the Islanders lost 3-1). This was also the final NHL goal of Davison’s career.
  • That bouncing goal on Vesa Toskala of the Maple Leafs continues to be a core memory for those who saw it. Toskala and Davison were once teammates on the Sharks and, according to Davison, Toskala told him afterwards, ‘“If one guy was going to do it – I am glad it was you.”
  • Davison went on to have short stints with the Canucks (23 games) and Devils (1 game), and two seasons in Europe playing in Austria and Czechia. During his even more brief time with the Devils, Davison fought Islanders Micheal Haley and Matt Martin… in the same preseason game!
  • He signed a deal to return to the Sharks in 2013 but spent the season in the AHL with Worcester.
  • Since retiring, he’s had an extensive coaching career, winning a Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies and back-to-back championships with Salzberg in Austria. He’s currently an associate coach with the OHL’s Guelph Storm.

What makes a “Weird Islander?”

We’re always open to suggestions about other Weird Islanders to discuss. Remember the criteria. Candidates must fulfill one of the two of the following:

  • Played one (1) season or less for the Islanders or very short stints over multiple seasons.
  • Be a veteran NHLer who is not generally associated with his time on Islanders.

Olympic Hockey: U.S. women win gold, men go for medal round

The U.S. women get it done. | Getty Images

The U.S. women fulfilled their destiny, completing their running of the table and medal rounds, though this time they needed a late equalizer and overtime to get past Canada to win gold. It’s almost always an epic battle between those two, even when one is a clear favorite as the U.S. were this time around. The pressure and potential heartbreak for the Americans was immense.

That brings us winding down to the final days, men’s semifinals Friday and the medal games Sunday:

  • On the men’s side, four teams are left and three of them will get medals, with two of them acting like only gold will do. Canada faces Finland today without Sidney Crosby. [NHL]

Islanders News: Golden Brock and Bo Silver

gettyimages-2262981498.jpg

You guys I’m gonna cry | Getty Images

In 1980, it was Jim Craig. In 1996, it was Mike Richter. In 2026, it was Connor Hellebuyck playing the role of goaltender spoiler keying a U.S. victory over a favored opponent. Deciding the gold medal via 3-on-3 overtime feels silly, but it’s at least an improvement over the shootout (Peter Forsberg, 1994, and Czechs over Canada, 1998) and it provided the platform for Jack Hughes and Zach Werenski to take their heroic turn against the three top players in the world.

Like the Americans of Squaw Valley 1960 and Lake Placid 1980, they’ll always have a tale to tell their descendants about 2026. Compared to all the other athletes toiling away in obscure sports most of us only hear about every four years, Olympic hockey with NHLers is kind of a sideshow, a co-opted forum for what should basically be just a World Cup. But when the players get that into it, it’s fun to see them get their reward (or in Nathan MacKinnon’s case, heartbreak…those long faces, reminiscent of Gretzky, Lindros, Yzerman & Co. in 1996 when Canada was supposed to prove once and for all who owned the sport).

I do feel bad for Bo Horvat though; all he did was everything asked of him, winning faceoffs so the superstars could get on the ice, even drawing a penalty late in regulation to erase Sam Bennett’s mistake and give Canada’s goldenboy power play a chance to win it all. They let him down though. I hope someday Bo will be proud of his medal and this experience, ‘cause the whole “gold or bust” entitlement approach is no way to go through life.

  • But back to U.S. legends…I’m happiest for Brock Nelson and his family Olympic lineage. Remember when he was drafted and we heard bits and pieces about the Dave and Bill Christian connection? Remember how it wasn’t clear if he would make the NHL as a winger or a center, but then he just kept getting better and better? The stars aligned for him to become an Olympian and win gold, and share a special moment (and rare status) with his 88-year-old grandpa. [NHL]
  • But remember, this Olympics wasn’t about Connor Hellebucyk standing on his head and the U.S. winning gold, it was about how Sidney Crosby selflessly sat out the final due to injury. He’s the real hero here. [NHL]
  • The Americans had the spirit of Johnny Gaudreau (and his wife and kids) with them every step of the way. [NHL]
  • Luke Hughes and other Devils back home were pretty jacked for Jack. [NHL]
  • Viewing the pain from an entertaining (vs. pompous) Canadian perspective. [Pass it to Bulis]

This is an Islanders blog, though:

Islanders Anxiety – Episode 362 – Sloth in a Sauna

Islanders_Anxiety_Art___2023.jpg

Mike and Dan look ahead to the Islanders resuming their season with three huge games, and present a special Olympic version of Master Leaf Theatre.

The Islanders’ final 24 games will be a brutal sprint, with lots of in-conference opponents, a road trip out west and seven back-to-backs. They get a taste of all of those in the first week and a half starting with games in Montreal and Columbus before returning home to face a wounded Florida squad. It’s vital they get off on the right foot because there’s no time to feel things out. They need points to keep teams like the Blue Jackets and Panthers off their heels and solidify their playoff berth. And if they – and especially Ilya Sorokin – are not ready to go, this resumption of the season may be short-lived.

We devote the second half to something we didn’t anticipate – a Master Leaf Theatre focused on Team USA’s gold medal win over Team Canada in the men’s hockey tournament. There were enough sour grapes flowing and weird things said that we needed to commemorate them in our signature style. From furious forwards to whiny radio hosts to taking shots at the Maple Leafs media machine, this Olympic edition of Master Leaf Theatre is as varied as The Games themselves.

Islanders News: Returning to action…and trades

The NHL is back in action after its damn-near-monthlong Olympic break with eight games tonight, though the Islanders don’t resume until tomorrow night in Montreal, one of 12 games Thursday.

That didn’t keep them from kicking off the looming trade frenzy, though, with a minor league swap of Julien Gauthier to the Blues/Springfield for Matt Luff for the Isles/Bridgeport. This continues what is becoming a tradition of late-season scrapyard swaps between these two franchises.

Both guys have NHL experience and can step in when needed, but they are primarily AHL resources at this point. The Blues are terrible this season and have dealt with a cascade of forward injuries but only afforded Luff five NHL games. He’s been a scorer in the A though. Gauthier looked like he might have a chance at a regular bottom-line role a couple of seasons ago before injuries derailed both 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Islanders 4, Canadiens 3 (OT): Pageau wins it after Schaefer-Dobson draw

gettyimages-2263241963.jpg

Without whom none of this would be possible… | NHLI via Getty Images

Noah Dobson scored two fist-pumping goals in his first meeting against his old team, but Matthew Schaefer scored two of his own to erase those, then the Islanders tied the game late with a sixth attacker, which set the table for Canadiens-killer J-G Pageau to score the OT winner in Montreal.

The 4-3 win gives the Isles a two-point boost coming out of the Olympic break, in a game that could’ve slipped away from them after an unimpressive second period (until Schaefer’s late heroics) and a power play goal gave the Habs a 3-2 lead midway through the third.

The Islanders hardly touched the puck in OT through two long but mostly unthreatening shifts, before Simon Holmstrom won a faceoff board battle with, um, Dobson, and sent Pageau off to the races to settle down a wobbly puck just in time.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

The Isles had a decent start and though they opened scoring in the first period, but Marc Gatcomb’s goal was called back for offside, with Schaefer the glaringly guilty party. That seemed to stunt the Isles’ energy or give the Canadiens a boost, because play started to tilt after that.

Dobson’s opener at 12:11 wasn’t a particularly threatening play — though Schaefer screened Ilya Sorokin on the shot after stumbling from a netfront battle — but it followed a sequence of increasing, sustained Montreal control.

The Islanders made it to the first intermission only trailing one, but they didn’t rebound in the second. Cole Caulfield had a bid to make it 2-0 immediately waved off due to a kicking motion.

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) February 27, 2026

Scott Mayfield took the first penalty of the game, and Dobson converted on that power play to give the Canadiens a real 2-0 lead, one that seemed imposing at the time, based on how things were going.

But, well, you know: anything Dobber can do, Schaefer can do better.

The Islanders got the break they needed with a nearly full two-minute 5-on-3. It looked like they would need every second of it before Schaefer finally broke the ice with a wicked shot through the defender’s legs and over the glove. That got the Islanders on the board, though they couldn’t do anything with the remaining half minute of 5-on-4.

However, thankfully, Schaefer wasn’t done. Less than a minute later, he did one of his regroups, calling for the puck back at their blueline, flying through the neutral zone, orbiting behind the net, changing directions to shake the checkers and then whipping another shot through a screen to tie it at 2-2.

— Isles Territory (@IslesTerritory) February 27, 2026

So they were back even, a new game headed into the third period. They’d just need a solid start and a better 20 minutes and…oh. Simon Holmstrom took a penalty 18 seconds in, one of two correct-but-soft tripping calls the Isles would take.

They killed off the first one convincingly. They killed most of the second one (seven minutes later) with the same approach, but a squib through the crease left an open net for Caulfield to slam it home and give the Habs the lead with 10:49 to go in the period.

Things looked stark, but for once the Islanders pulled the goalie during a proper flow into the zone. Their top guys maintained possession despite some close calls from good defensive pressure from the Habs. Just when it seemed like that would all be for naught on that shift, Bo Horvat’s last-gasp shot from the high slot deflected in off the chest of captain Anders Lee, playing his 900th regular season NHL game.

We were mercifully spared a shootout thanks to Pageau finishing the game 1:46 into OT. The Canadiens won the faceoffs and controlled the puck up to that point, but they didn’t really threaten thanks to patient positioning from the Isles.

When Pageau won the next draw in the D-zone to the right wing, Holmstrom won his battle and chipped a puck off the boards to send his running mate in. The puck seemed to be wobbling all night, as if the [telecom or bank or whatever] Cent(e)r(e) ice care team took the entire Olympics off, and Pageau indeed had to settle this one before depositing it between Sam Monte…Monteba…Monte-not-gonna-work-here-much-longer’s legs.

The Islanders remain on the road in Columbus before coming back home tomorrow for a meeting with the Panthers. Both opponent are chasing to get back in the wild card spots, though it’s looking bleak for the two-time defending Cup champs. The Blue Jackets have two games in hand on the Isles but trail by three games, and those extra games mean their post-Olympic schedule is all the more compressed.

Let’s not hear the cannon tonight, okay?

First Islanders Goal picks go here.

Islanders 4, Blue Jackets 3 (OT): Overtime hot streak continues

imagn-28368857.jpg

Doin’ their thing, Simon’s turn this time. | Aaron Doster-Imagn Images

The Islanders pulled out yet another overtime win — their eighth in eight tries this season — and another two points from a game where they didn’t have their best and their opponent left feeling like they deserved better.

Trailing 2-0 early in the second period, Ilya Sorokin kept the Isles in the game long enough for them to mount a comeback, tying it with two goals in 22 seconds and even taking a 3-2 lead five minutes later. That feel-good spell was tempered when Columbus equalized just 1:48 after a rare Scott Mayfield go-ahead goal, and with just a minute left in the middle period.

But at least the Islanders had made a game of it after things looked stark in the first 30 minutes. The Isles got the bounces to get back in the game, as well as a friendly review denying Columbus’ goalie interference challenge on the equalizer. The third was scoreless, setting the stage for the Isles’ bread and butter.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

Because then came the hero: Simon Holmstrom took a long pass and a page out of his runningmate J-G Pageau’s play book by carrying down the right wing and going across the net for the winner. Instead of tucking through the pads like Pageau in OT two nights prior, Holmstrom used his long reach to go all the way around Jet Greaves.

HOLMSTROM CALLED GAME. #Isles pic.twitter.com/PNuUTqKogh

— Isles Territory (@IslesTerritory) March 1, 2026

It’s good eatin’ the Islanders are enjoying this year in overtime. There is definitely a fresher, smarter approach to OT than frustrating recent seasons, and there’s also the effect of having Matthew Schaefer around, but going 8-0 in OT through the first three quarters of the season is a run that will have you looking over your shoulder for Lady Luck’s sinister sibling.

For now, though, and as long as it rides, we’ll gladly take it.

The win gives the Isles four in a row and both on the road coming out of the Olympic break, keeping Metro chasers like Columbus behind.

Also: Anders Lee scored in consecutive games for the first time this season, scoring in his 900th game (tying Bobby Nystrom) and now his 901st (tying Brock Nelson). He has over 130 goals since the Isles retired John Tonelli’s #27 while allowing Lee to keep it and continue a bid to earn a banner of his own.

Islanders B2B Gameday News: Home for the Panthers

Simon knows best. | Aaron Doster-Imagn Images

No rest for the victors, as the Islanders return to Long Island to host the Florida Panthers after winning in Columbus last night. The Panthers are rested and might even be a little healthier, having lost at home to the Sabres on Friday night.

The two-time defending champs are 30-26-3 on the season and sit eight points behind the second wild card spot. Atlantic teams occupy both of those spots right now, so that’s really the only avenue they have to make a big climb back into it. If they miss the playoffs, they certainly wouldn’t be the first Cup champ to do so, but they’d have a little more grace considering how much hockey they’ve played and how many key injuries they’ve had for much of the season.

Amid that backdrop is the status of Sergei Bobrovsky, who’s having another mid-career-level Bobrovsky season rather than anything close to his Columbus and Panthers Cup-run peaks. His top-dollar contract certainly carried him through some highs and lows, so the Panthers are right not to want to rush into a premium extension for a guy who will be 38.

The Isles won’t concern themselves with any of that, of course. They’ll just want to have a better performance than the last two games, where they found ways to pull off 4-3 OT wins despite some shoddy play.

First Islanders Goal picks go here.

Islanders 5, Panthers 4: Another comeback with Lee’s late winner

imagn-28378461.jpg

There he goes again. | Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images

The Islanders pulled off a third consecutive two-goal comeback win and this time they didn’t even need overtime, though Anders Lee’s winner was practically that, coming with 32 seconds left in regulation on a stunning individual play by the captain.

Oh, also: Matthew Schaefer had another two-goal game, ho-hum, to bring his rookie season goal total to 20 goals at age 18.

It was a wild, back-and-forth affair that saw the teams enter the third period tied 3-3 after the Isles erased a 0-2 deficit and then Bo Horvat erased a 3-2 lead with a terrible-angle shot on Sergei Bobrovsky late in the second period.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

Schaefer scored to give the Isles a 4-3 lead midway through the first period, shooting through legs again but this time benefiting from a couple helpful deflections. To leave him this wide open with time to pick a spot at the top of the slot is both criminal and very welcome:

20 GOALS FOR MATTHEW SCHAEFER.

KID IS UNBELIEVABLE. #Isles pic.twitter.com/YnceaYIqYn

— Isles Territory (@IslesTerritory) March 2, 2026

The Islanders weren’t too bad trying to see out the game with a one-goal lead, but they allowed far too much traffic to develop through the slot once the Panthers pulled Bobrovsky for a sixth attacker. Sam Reinhart tied it with 1:58 to go, and there were some close calls around David Rittich’s net after that to hint this game might not make it to overtime.

But the script flip came on the Islanders’ side, again, after they escaped some bad turnovers and consecutive icings. It started with a bouncing pass to the neutral zone from Tony DeAngelo. Lee not only handled the pass but batted the puck once out of the air as he cut across the neutral zone from left to right. Simon Holmstrom crossed with him, staying on side but mixing up the Panthers’ top D pair just enough to give Lee some daylight down the right wing.

His sweeping power move took Bobrovsky by surprise — or at least, the Panthers goalie sold out completely to face the backhand — and Lee was able to slam it home after carrying around the Panthers goalie and Aaron Ekblad. Gustav Forsling was just a foot short with his emergency reach.
