Utah Hockey Club v Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA - FEBRUARY 08: Matias Maccelli #63 of the Utah Hockey Club takes shot on Pyotr Kochetkov #52 and Shayne Gostisbehere #4 of the Carolina Hurricanes during the third period at Lenovo Center on February 08, 2025 in Raleigh, North Carolina. | Photo by Katie Januck/Getty Images

The Canes end their losing streak and scoring slump against Utah

The Carolina Hurricanes scored more than double the goals that they scored in their last three loses as they exploded to defeat the Utah Hockey Club, 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Lenovo Center.

With the score tied 1-1 after the first period, the Canes scored four times in the second to take over the game, including a rare powerplay goal.

Jalen Chatfield opened the scoring when he broke in with Jordan Staal midway through the first.

Seth Jarvis scored a powerplay goal to open the second.

Sebastian Aho then scored unassisted and the goal barrage continued.

After Clayton Keller broke in alone for Utah, Aho would score a shortie off an assist by, guess who, Seth Jarvis. They have to be the most dangerous duo in the league while playing short-handed.

Jarvis would score again just before the end of the period giving him 22 goals for the season. Aho now has 20.

In the third, Martinook and Roslovic closed out the scoring.

Jarvis finished the game with four points and Aho had three.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 36 saves on the 39 shots he faced.

Mikko Rantanen had the night off, reportedly for a sore knee. Brind’Amour said the injury was not serious.

The Canes now have a two week break for the Four Nations Tournament. We will have more about that later.

Game Preview: Utah vs. Carolina

Carolina Hurricanes v Minnesota Wild

The Canes seek to snap a three-game losing streak.

In the last game before the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Carolina Hurricanes are still searching for their first win this month.

Angst is setting in among the Caniacs, as line combinations, power play struggles, and the lack of production from new acquisitions are frustrating the Carolina faithful.

Especially with the recent flu outbreak in the locker room, the Hurricanes need this 4 Nations Face-Off break. The break would be that much better with a sendoff victory.

This afternoon is the second matchup between these teams. Carolina’s first trip to Salt Lake City was a frustrating game, as the Canes hammered 50 shots on net but lost 4-1.

UHC’s predecessor, the Arizona Coyotes, was 1-1-8 in the last ten games against the Hurricanes and had just two wins in the previous nine trips to Raleigh.

Utah has been hovering around .500 all season and has been streaky at times.

In January, a three-game losing streak was followed by a three-game winning streak. A five-game losing streak led to Utah’s current two-game winning streak.

Four of UHC's last five games have gone to overtime. Despite two losses, earning points in those games has helped Utah stay in the Western Wild Card hunt. Utah is six points out of the final Wild Card spot.

Utah has been a much better road team this season. UHC is 14-10-3 on the road and, with seven consecutive road victories, set the NHL record for the longest road winning streak by an expansion franchise.

Utah captain Clayton Keller is on pace for another point-per-game season. He leads Utah in points, assists, shots, and power play points.

Winger Dylan Guenther leads the team in goals despite missing 12 games this season due to injury.

Two games ago, Guenther returned to the lineup after a month and made a huge impact, scoring two goals and tallying one assist in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. He is on a two-game goal-scoring streak with his score against Columbus on Thursday night.

In terms of point production, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev is having a very good year. His ten goals match his career high, and Sergachev is logging more average minutes than any time in his career. Sergachev will need 31 points to set a career-high, but he needs just seven more points for the second-most in his career.

Utah has alternated their goalies over the past few weeks, so expect Karel Vejmelka in net. Vejmelka stunted in the Canes back in November, setting a career-high with 49 saves in the win.

Vejmelka has a losing record, but he ranks ninth in the league with a 2.46 goals against average and 14th with a .910 save percentage.

Carolina seems snakebit since ending January on a seven-game points streak. Despite generating many opportunities, the Canes have scored just three goals in the last three games.

It seems that the recent lull in scoring is causing the Hurricanes to grip their sticks a bit too tightly or make unnecessary passes.

The team needs a breather, and the upcoming schedule break could not come at a better time.

A hard reset on the power play is needed, but that probably won't happen today. The Utah penalty kill is ranked sixth in the NHL, so the Hurricanes face another uphill battle on the man advantage.

There is good news. Carolina is back home in Raleigh, where the Canes have the most home wins among Eastern Conference teams.

Via Walt Ruff, the Hurricanes are wearing the red sweaters this afternoon, and the team is 7-1-1 in those jerseys.

Ruff confirms Pyotr Kochetkov will get the start between the pipes. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour says there may be lineup changes and specifically points to the availability of Sebastian Aho and Mikko Rantanen.

Pyotr Kochetkov starts today for the #Canes against Utah.

As far as the rest of the lineup goes, Rod Brind’Amour says that there are still a couple of question marks.

When asked specifically about the availability of Sebastian Aho and Mikko Rantanen, he answered, “We’ll see.” pic.twitter.com/wNZ85sBNWm

The Canes look to end a two game slide in their last road game before the Four Nations break

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Hurricanes. While the Canes have been dealing with what seems like non-stop games, they had to deal with a seismic trade that has vaulted them to a serious Stanley Cup contender but also saw them lose two long-time pieces. For good measure they’ve had a sickness sweep through the locker room that is wrecking havoc with the health of players at various times.

I mean, if there’s a scene from a movie that is appropriate to this situation in both a figurative and probably literal sense, it’s this one from Bull Durham. (Language warning in case you’ve never seen this classic)

The good news here is that it looks like the Canes are coming out on the other side. Yes, they lost 3-0 against the Jets on Tuesday but can we all agree that if not for the NHL’s refusal to be consistent on Goalie Interference that game would look a lot different? If the first goal had stayed on the board and the Canes were playing with a 1-0 lead instead of having to chase the game, and then they were able to safely pull the goalie down 2-0 late in the third who knows what happened?

With that said there was a lot to like about that game. The revamped Power Play should have actually scored one, and the Aho/Rantanen pairing with Jackson Blake has clearly developed a ton of chemistry. Not to mention the only scratch on Tuesday was in favor of giving young defenseman Scott Morrow a chance to draw in. Taylor Hall is also fitting in quite nicely. Don’t forget this two game losing streak is coming off the heels of a seven game points streak, with only one being an overtime loss.

So in an effort to put the last few days behind them, the Canes went on ahead and bolted Winnipeg after the game and woke up in St. Paul Wednesday. Then they went ahead and practiced in the home of the Wild. They’ll wake up in the same beds today, and knowing that there won’t be a morning skate means everyone on the squad will be able to maximize their rest prior to tonight’s game. With a late arrival back in Raleigh tonight and then an early game Saturday before the break, it’s probably the right call.

We’ll know with Rod Brind’Amour’s availability today at 4:15 if there will be any lineup changes. Scott Morrow wasn’t sent back to Chicago, and as the Canes have been in the habit of banking cap space one would think there’s a decent chance he plays again tonight. It’s probably also safe to assume that Frederik Andersen will be between the pipes as he hasn’t played since Saturday’s loss to the Kings.

Their opponent in the Minnesota Wild come into the game tonight third in the Central and safely in the playoffs—t’s just a matter of whether they’ll be the Central’s two, three, or end up in Wild Card one as they are within sight of the Dallas Stars but the Colorado Avalanche are riding their bumper hard. They’ve been a little shaky as of late. They followed a two game losing streak with a three game winning streak and then followed that with another two game losing streak, and in both those games they were shut out. They have not scored goal in a week.

There’s a big reason for that, of course. The Wild thought they were getting star Krill Kaprizov back after missing a month with a lower body injury, but after playing just two games the Wild announced he was having surgery last Tuesday. While he’s now on LTIR, he is expected to be back this season—but the Canes at least catch a break they’ll miss him now. Of course, that didn’t help back when the two teams met in Raleigh on January 4th. That was the uninspired effort sandwiched between the dominating 4-0 win against the Panthers and the overtime comeback win against the Penguins.

Thus tonight it’s another playoff matchup against two teams that were shut out by their opponents on Tuesday on the road. We’ll see if the Canes can Dig In for these last two before a well-deserved two weeks off for all but four of the players.

One other note—This is yet another “national” game that is an ESPN+/Hulu exclusive. If you use ESPN+ to watch the Canes anyway, just know you won’t be listening to Mike and Tripp. If you’re used to watching on FanDuel Sports Net, then you’ll need to grab your streaming remote.

So, here’s how to catch the action if you won’t be in St. Paul to watch live:

  • Time: 7:30 PM Eastern
  • Location: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN
  • Streaming: ESPN+/Hulu only—no linear TV. Mike Manaco will handle play-by-play while AJ Mleczo will handle color. John Buccigross, Ray Ferraro, Emily Kaplan, and Arda Öcal will be in the studio for the intermissions and game updates.
  • Radio: Hurricanes Radio Network—99.9 FM in Raleigh, 730 AM in Charlotte, 107.5 FM in New Bern, and 107.5 in Greenville. Mike Maniscalco will handle play-by-play while Tripp Tracy will do color as only he can. Adam Gold will handle pre and postgame. Note-if you want to sync the video to the call from Mike and Tripp, just pull up 99.9 the Fan on a streaming device and since both are streaming they should sync up pretty well.

Carolina Hurricanes v Winnipeg Jets

WINNIPEG, CANADA - FEBRUARY 4: Goaltender Eric Comrie #1 of the Winnipeg Jets takes part in the pre-game warm up prior to NHL action against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Canada Life Centre on February 4, 2025 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. | Photo by Jonathan Kozub/NHLI via Getty Images

Winnipeg’s second goalie good enough to shut down Carolina

Winnipeg’s Vezina candidate goalie, Connor Hellebuyck had the night off, but the Jets got a shutout anyway from backup, Eric Comrie as they topped the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Tuesday night in Winnipeg.

The home team scored one goal in each period for the victory, including one from former Hurricane, Nino Niederreiter.

The Canes had one goal on the board in the first period before a review was requested for goaltender interference by the Jets. The call on the ice was indeed reversed and the goal taken off the board when it was determined that Mikko Rantanen touched Comrie skating through the crease.

Things just got worse for Carolina the rest of the way.

The Canes managed 29 shots on goal but were outshot by one as the Jets put on 30.

For the second game in a row, Brind’Amour blamed “bad bounces” for much of the bad luck in the game. But the Jets don’t have the best record in the league by accident and out-played Carolina in this one.

The Canes will take the short flight to Minnesota and will play the Wild on Thursday night.

Red hot Scott Morrow has been recalled

Tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes (32-17-4) take on the league leading Winnipeg Jets (37-14-3) at the Canada Life Centre. Game time is 8 P.M. Eastern and it will be televised by the FanDuel Sports Network.

The Canes are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Kings, but they are 6-2-2 in their last 10.

The Jets have won six games in a row. They are 8-2-0 in their last 10.

Carolina recently recalled defenseman Scott Morrow from Chicago. He has 10 points in his last eight games and has 29 points in a total of 41 games this season for the Wolves.

Pyotr Kochetkov is next in the goaltender rotation.

It was reported that everyone was at practice yesterday for Carolina except for Juha Jaaska.

Tough night of “bad bounces” for Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Los Angeles Kings would score three straight and went on the defeat the Canes, 4-2 at the Lenovo Center on Saturday night.

Andrei Svechnikov did not play because of an “upper body injury” but most of the other regulars played in this game, whether they were 100% or not.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi started things off when he tipped in a Sean Walker shot to make it 1-0.

The center now has six points in his last six games.

Los Angeles would tie the score before the end of the period.

In the second, the Kings scored twice more as Carolina managed only six shots on goal for the period.

The Canes got some juice when Brent Burns found Eric Robinson, who broke in alone to beat Darcy Kuemper. But that would be it for Carolina.

Kevin Fiala beat Frederik Andersen for the second time to make the score 4-2 which for all intent, ended things.

The Hurricanes will take Sunday off before they fly to Winnipeg for a game on Tuesday night.

Big game tonight for the 4 Nations Tournament

The “4 Nations Tournament” is about half way through and I must admit, the hockey has been more inspired than I thought it would be.

Your humble narrator took the week off, so my apologies if the last thread of comments was cumbersome.

With three games in the books so far, the point totals are pretty even. USA leads the way with three while Canada, Sweden, and Finland each have two.

USA and Canada will soon change those totals tonight though as they have only played one game while Finland and Sweden have played two.

Here’s hoping to see a competitive game with no injuries!

Round table games wrap up today

The 4 Nations Face-Off is back in action today as Team Canada and Team Finland play at 1 P.M. while Team USA and Team Sweden battle at 8. The location of the games moves to Boston, which will provide a significant home ice advantage for the Americans.

Team USA leads the way with a 2-0-0 record and a dominating 6 points earned. They have already qualified for the championship game. Each of the other teams have earned two points. If either Canada or Finland win this afternoon in regulation, they will face USA in the championship game.

The “mother of all” hockey games will be played in Boston tonight

Team Canada faces Team USA tonight in the championship game of the “4 Nations Face-Off.”

Team USA will have the home ice advantage. The game will start at about 8 P.M. and will be played in Boston.

The game will be televised by ESPN, ESPN plus, and other ESPN outlets.

I must admit, I have been pleasantly surprised over the intensity of this tournament, especially the first game between these teams when there were three fights within the first 10 seconds.

There has been hard hitting as well as some injuries. These players are playing to win.

The Canes come out flat in Toronto

The Carolina Hurricanes had a hard time getting into the flow of their hockey game against the Toronto Maple Leafs as they ended up with a 6-3 loss on Saturday night in Toronto.

Both teams had two weeks off for the “4 Nations Face-Off” tournament but the Hurricanes were the ones who looked incredibly rusty in the opening period as they fell behind 4-0.

The game seemed over after the first six minutes and change when it was 3-0.

The Leafs added another goal before the end of the period to make it 4-0.

After a scoreless second period, the Canes finally were able to light the lamp on a Shayne Gostisbehere shot with 12:27 gone in the third..

Then, they made it 4-2 when Andrei Svechnikov scored just two minutes later.

Jaccob Slavin showed he could play offense as well as defense when he knocked in a loose puck to make it 4-3 and for a moment, it seemed like the visitors might be able to at least pull out a point for their efforts, but the Leafs scored two empty-netters to close things out.

The Canes will try to lick their wounds and prepare for their next game in Montreal on Tuesday night.
