Hall of Famer
Well the Red Sox, Rays, Braves, Cardinals, Tigers, and Rangers all had playoff implications going yesterday on the last day of the regular season. I never thought game 162 would mean so much for one season in the MLB. It was probably the most exciting night of MLB baseball in a long time.
So here's what went down. First lets start with the Tigers and Rangers. The Rangers lead the Tigers by 1 game in the race for second place and homefield advantage in the ALDS as of yesterday. The Tigers won, and the Rangers scored in the ninth inning to win. So the Rangers earned the second best seed in the American League.
The Braves lead the National League wild card by 8.5 games at the start of September.
Next the Braves and the Cardinals. They both were tied going into yesterday for the National League Wild Card. The Cardinals easily beat their opponent, the Astros, with a complete game 2 hit shutout from Chris Carpenter. All they needed to do now, was to watch the Braves game and hope they lost so they didn't have to play again in a one game playoff on Thursday. The Braves were up 3-2 in the top of the ninth, and then they let up a run, and blew the lead. They went to extra innings, and the Phillies scored in the top of the 13th to take the lead. The Braves couldn't score in the bottom of the inning, after grounding into a season ending double play. So the Cardinals celebrated in their clubhouse as they completed the comeback and won the National League Wild Card.
Next we have the most exciting race of all. The Boston Red Sox lead the Tampa Bay Rays by 9 games at the start of September.
The Rays were playing the Yankees, while the Red Sox were playing the Orioles. They were tied in the American League wild card going into the games. The Yankees took an early 7-0 lead over the Rays, and kept that lead into the eighth. The Rays were not done yet. They scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th to fall behind by only one, 7-6. The Rays were then down to their final out and Dan Johnson came up to bat, and hit a line drive homer to tie the game at 7. Then in the twelfth inning, Evan Longoria who earlier homered in the eighth inning, hit a walk off shot! The Rays had won.
The Red Sox were up 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, with the Orioles at bat. Jonathon Papelbon blew the lead, and then let up the game winning hit. The Red Sox did not make the playoffs, and the Rays won the American League Wild Card.
Whoooof. So did you get all that? Well it was for sure an exciting night, and I don't think it could have been much more exciting.
