That Pacers loss was frustrating to watch. JJ putting up a triple-double and the team still can't close it out in the clutch - that's been the story too many times this season.

The analysis about Jay Huff's impact in the second half is spot on. You could see the Hawks completely change their approach once he was anchored in the paint. First half they were attacking the rim with confidence, then suddenly everyone's settling for contested jumpers and kick-out threes that aren't falling. That 44 points in the paint in the first half dropping to 20 in the second tells the whole story.

I get Snyder's frustration about ball movement and assists, but I think the bigger issue was abandoning what was working. When you're cooking in the paint like that, you don't just pivot to becoming a jump shooting team because a shot blocker checked in. Find the counters - Daniels' floater worked, go to it more. Get Huff in foul trouble. Make adjustments.

The inbounds turnover at the end was brutal. Seven seconds, chance to tie, and we don't even get a shot up. Those are the moments that separate playoff teams from play-in teams.

Really hoping OO comes back soon. His presence changes everything about how this team operates, and Snyder basically said as much without saying it directly. The unselfishness he brings affects everyone else's rhythm.

Two days off before Miami - need that one bad with how tight the standings are in the 5-8 range.

Report: Vit Krejci traded for Duop Reath, two seconds

The Hawks aren’t done making moves this season.

After picking up CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert from the Wizards in the Trae Young trade, they have now reportedly made another move. Per Shams Charania of ESPN:

The Atlanta Hawks are trading guard Vit Krejci to the Portland Trail Blazers for Duop Reath and two future second-round picks, sources tell ESPN. Krejci has averaged 9 points and 2.2 3-pointers made per game on 42.3% shooting, which ranks top 20 in the NBA. pic.twitter.com/3MAOTnks5M

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 1, 2026

Jake L. Fischer later clarified the picks coming Atlanta’s direction:

Apologies, Portland is trading the Blazers’ own 2027 second and New York’s 2030 second to Atlanta, sources say. https://t.co/4xmt85VzeW

— Jake Fischer (@JakeLFischer) February 1, 2026
To further clarify: That 2027 second is the Hawks’ own second, heading back to Atlanta, from Portland.

That was the tricky part.

So… Portland has indeed sent one team back its previously traded draft pick before the deadline… https://t.co/Nrb1YfKpyW

— Jake Fischer (@JakeLFischer) February 1, 2026

Reath is a 29-year-old 6-foot-9, 245-pound big man from South Sudan and Australia who entered the NBA three years ago despite leaving LSU in 2018 to play professionally internationally. Per 36 minutes, he has averaged 16.8 points and 7.0 rebounds on 45% shooting from the floor and 36% from three in his NBA career.

The primary motivation for this move seems to be acquiring the two second-round picks over the player, who is out for this season with a fracture in his foot — although he will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

All the best to Krejci as he heads to Portland!

Jalen Johnson named to first career All-Star Game

Today marked a big milestone in the new franchise player’s career. It was announced this evening that Jalen Johnson has been named to the bench of the Eastern Conference All-Stars for the first time in his career:

Making his 1st NBA All-Star appearance… Jalen Johnson of the @ATLHawks.

Drafted as the 20th pick in 2021 out of Duke, @Jalen_J23 is averaging 23.1 PPG, 10.5 RPG and 8.0 APG for the Hawks this season. pic.twitter.com/9m973S5oqa

— #NBAAllStar (@NBAAllStar) February 1, 2026

Having ascended to the number one option in Atlanta with Trae Young now in Washington D.C., Johnson is averaging career highs in the three traditional box score stats: points per game (23.4), assists per game (8.1) and rebounds per game (10.7).

Johnson is the only qualifying player averaging at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists per game this season. In fact, if he maintains these averages until the end of the season, he’ll be just the fifth player in NBA history to meet those marks in season after Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Russell Westbrook, and Nikola Jokic.

He’s also shooting 50% from the field, 36% from three, and 78% from the free-throw line for a career-high 59% true shooting percentage. After struggling with injuries in the prior two seasons as a starter, Jalen Johnson has played in 46 of 51 games and is 11th in the league in minutes (1,636) as of this morning.

The fourteen Eastern and Western Conference reserves were selected from a combination of the fan, player, and media voting. The All-Star format won’t be the traditional East vs. West battle. Instead, it will consist of three teams in a round robin format where two teams are composed of U.S. players and the third of international players.

Congratulations to Jalen Johnson on this momentous achievement!

Hawks lose to Rockets by double digits in Jalen Johnson’s absence

The Atlanta Hawks squared off against the Houston Rockets on January 29 at State Farm Arena, and their outing didn’t seem to go the way they wanted it to. The Hawks were fresh off a win against the Boston Celtics, defeating them 117-106, and the Rockets recently lost to the San Antonio Spurs, but Houston defeated Atlanta 104-86, losing by double digits.

Jalen Johnson’s Absence

Hawks’ forward Jalen Johnson did not play against the Rockets last night due to calf tightness. Johnson has been averaging 23 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game this season.

Johnson’s offensive production was definitely missed as they struggled to get things going in the second half. Hawks’ guards CJ McCollum and Nickeil Alexander-Walker picked up the slack, with McCollum having 23 points and Alexander-Walker scoring 20. Forward Corey Kispert was third in scoring with 17 points.

The Hawks did well in the first half, keeping the score close — their backcourt got hot early, and they were only down one at 43-42. The Rockets were ranked in the top five in scoring defense, so the Hawks would have had to make the most of their offensive possessions, but Houston’s defensive prowess rang true. But things got away in the second half with players like Rockets forward Kevin Durant, Reed Sheppard, and Jabari Smith Jr. having productive games.

Hawks’ Defensive Struggles

The Hawks’ defense struggled against the Rockets, with Kevin Durant scoring 31 points on 12-for-22 shooting. The Hawks had a tough matchup guarding Durant on the perimeter.

Size differential could’ve been an issue for the Hawks as well. Houston was able to take control of the paint with 59 total rebounds to the Hawks’ 46. Houston forward Jabari Smith Jr. had five blocks while guard Reed Sheppard had 13 points.

In the postgame press conference, Hawks head coach Quinn Snyder said that when Durant is “at the nail of the foul line, it’s very difficult to double team there.” Also emphasizing that when Durant is doubled, that hurt them in rebounding.

Hawks Injuries

To the Hawks’ credit, they did well in the first half, but things just went negative in the second half. But they also have quite a few injuries with Jalen Johnson not playing due to a calf issue. Onyeka Okongwu, Zaccharie Risacher, and Kristaps Porzingis did not play either.

In the postgame presser, Snyder iterated that Okongwu and Johnson are among their better players. Against a team with a size differential, such as Houston, this was evident in rebounding.

The Atlanta Hawks will go against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. For the Hawks, a key to getting back on track for the rest of the season is getting players healthy and having their core players available.

Atlanta is now 24-26 and ninth in the Eastern Conference.

Johnson, McCollum lead Hawks to commanding 127-115 victory in Miami

In a matchup featuring the two fastest teams in the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks were in South Beach to take on the Miami Heat on Tuesday evening. After dropping two consecutive games against Houston and Indiana, the Hawks were looking to get back to winning ways — and keep the surging Charlotte Hornets* off their tails for the 10-seed in the Eastern Conference.

*winners of seven straight!

The Hawks were without Kristaps Porzingis* (illness) and Onyeka Okongwu (dental fracture) for this one. Meanwhile, Miami were missing Andrew Wiggins (left hamstring tightness), Tyler Herro (ribs), and Norman Powell (personal) — who was named to his first career All-Star game on Sunday.

Atlanta reinserted Christian Koloko into the lineup tonight, as he joined Daniels, Alexander-Walker, Risacher and Jalen Johnson in the starting unit. Davion Mitchell, Pelle Larson, Myron Gardner, Simone Fontecchio and Bam Adebayo started the game for Miami.

Miami’s pace was on display early on, as they raced out to a 9-3 lead with multiple buckets in transition before back-to-back triples from Risacher and Alexander-Walker got Atlanta settled into the contest.

Though Norman Powell was sidelined for this one, Jalen Johnson reminded the Miami crowd that there was still an All-Star competing in tonight’s game — slicing through the lane for this emphatic jam on Jaime Jaquez Jr. mid-way through the quarter to put the Hawks up 17-13.

Miami knotted things at 19, before a 14-4 Hawks run over the last four-and-a-half minutes of the period put the good guys up by 10 heading into the second quarter. Though Risacher gets the highlight for this deft finish in transition — CJ McCollum was instrumental for Atlanta during this run, pouring in 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting off the bench in the opening frame.

Atlanta kept their foot on the gas to open the second quarter. Asa Newell and Jalen Johnson made their presence felt on the interior with back-to-back jams, before a three from Luke Kennard extended the lead to 48-30 at the 7:51 mark of the second.

A mini-run from the Heat brought them as close as 11 points, but the Hawks quickly extinguished any talk of a first-half comeback, closing the quarter on a Jalen Johnson-led 11-5 run to take a 67-50 lead into the locker room.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 4, 2026

The biggest difference between the two sides in the first half was the three-point shooting. Atlanta shot 11-for-28 (39.3%) from distance while Miami went just 5-for-19 (26.3%). Jalen Johnson led all scorers at the half with 15 points. Simone Fontecchio was the high man for Miami with 11 points.

Miami looked the better team to start the second half, opening the quarter on a 19-7 run to cut the lead to five at the 7:03 mark of the period. With the Heat gaining momentum, an and-one bucket from Kispert at the 5:37 mark kept Miami at arms length.

True to their nature however, Miami would not concede so easily — cutting the lead to 11 at the 8:52 mark of the fourth, resulting in an early timeout for Quin Snyder. Out of the timeout, a refocused Hawks side put things right, going on an 8-0 run (punctuated by the Mo Gueye triple below) to get the lead back up to 19 with 7:01 remaining.

From there, it was quite comfortable for Atlanta. Both sides cleared their benches with a little over a minute left to play, and the Hawks took home a comfortable 127-115 win.

Jalen Johnson finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists — his 9th triple-double of the season. CJ McCollum poured in 26 points (6-for-9 from three-point range) — setting a new Hawks-high for the veteran guard. Nickeil Alexander-Walker chipped in with 19 points.

Atlanta is back in action on Thursday night, taking on the Utah Jazz on their home floor. They’ll be looking to to continue to build momentum as the All Star break approaches.

Report: Hawks snag Kuminga, Hield from Golden State

In a stunning development, the Atlanta Hawks have reportedly traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield per Shams Charania of ESPN.

BREAKING: The Golden State Warriors are trading Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis, sources tell ESPN. pic.twitter.com/eqNWwCupEZ

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 5, 2026

Porzingis was acquired over the summer, and played just 17 games in a Hawks uniform before being moved. He averaged 17.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while knocking down 36% of his looks from beyond the arc this season.

Kuminga is the centerpiece of the return package and is an extremely talented — albeit enigmatic — wing, who had struggled to find a regular spot in Steve Kerr’s rotation since being drafted seventh overall back in 2021. For his career, he’s averaged 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game with 50.3/33.1/66.9* shooting splits.

*FG%/3P%/FT%

When Jimmy Butler went down in last year’s West Conference Semi-Finals, Kuminga provided a huge spark for Golden State, averaging 24.3 points on 55.4% shooting from the field (38.9% from downtown) over the final four games of the series. Kuminga will be another addition to Atlanta’s crop of wings and will be sure to provide some firepower off the bench this season. He has a team option for $24.3 million next season, and it will be fascinating to see how he develops under Quin Snyder over the rest of the 2025-26 season.

Also coming Atlanta’s way in the deal is Buddy Hield — a nine-year NBA veteran with a stellar 39.9% career three-point percentage (7.7 attempts per game). He won’t add much in terms of playmaking or defense but will be another shooter off the bench to provide some competition for Luke Kennard and Corey Kispert.

Hield is under contract through the 2026-27 season at just under $10 million per year, with a player option for $10.1 million in 2027-28. Of note, he is only guaranteed $3 million in 2026-27, with his full salary becoming guaranteed the day after the draft (per Spotrac).

With less than 24 hours to the trade deadline, we are all in wait-and-see mode to see if the Hawks are done making moves. Stay tuned.

Report: Hawks flip Kennard for Lakers guard and second, waive Reath

The Hawks remained busy on deadline day. After getting a strong last month from their offseason guard acquisition, Luke Kennard is now on the move to the Western Conference. This from Shams Charania of ESPN:

The Los Angeles Lakers are trading Gabe Vincent and a 2032 second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Luke Kennard, sources tell ESPN.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 5, 2026

Kennard is shooting a league-leading 49.7% from three after taking criticism for his passivity to begin his stint with the Hawks this season. In comes Gabe Vincent, a forgotten man in Los Angeles who broke out with the Miami Heat during their most recent run to the NBA Finals.

Vincent makes $500,000 more than Kennard ($11 million) in salary, but both player’s deals are up after this season. This move seems primarily motivated by picking up the Lakers’ 2032 second-round pick.

Additionally, the Hawks have announced the Jock Landale deal while also waiving Duop Reath to open up a roster spot.

The Hawks have reportedly added a center one day before the trade deadline tomorrow. In fact, it’s a player they already know. This per Shams Charania of ESPN:

The Atlanta Hawks are acquiring center Jock Landale from the Utah Jazz for cash considerations, sources tell ESPN.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 4, 2026

Landale has played the entire season with the Memphis Grizzlies, but he was included in a blockbuster deal that took him with Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz.

The Australian international joins Dyson Daniels and the recently acquired Duop Reath as players on the team who represent the Land Down Under. Jock Landale is having a career year in the wake of Memphis’ injury crisis, averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

He’s an offensive-minded 6-foot-11, 255-pound player, but will help the team rebound with his physicality and can space the floor from three (38% shooting from deep in 2.9 attempts per game).

The Hawks have actually had him as a part of their organization twice before: once as part of their 2018 Summer League team after going undrafted from Saint Mary’s. The second time, he was acquired with Dejounte Murray back in 2022 before being moved on to the Phoenix Suns that same summer.

He joins a big man group looking for depth behind the largely unavailable Kristaps Porzingis.

Passing out grades for the deadline moves

The 2026 NBA trade deadline has come and gone, and the Hawks’ roster looks fairly different as compared to earlier in the season. We have yet to see three of the acquired players play for the team, but enough dust has settled by now to judge the totality of the moves.

Let’s get to it by going through each move chronologically (according to when the news broke), and how I grade them based on short-term and long-term impact:

CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert for Trae Young

This one was the blockbuster that kicked off things early in January. Enough time has passed, and so I won’t go through the minutiae of it all.

Trae Young had been seeking an extension since the summer given that he holds just a $49 million player option for next season and nothing beyond that. The Hawks neglected to offer him an extension.

Ultimately Young’s value as a defense-deficient, ball dominant guard outweighed his track record as a productive offensive engine. But the team was still motivated to find a resolution — even as Young was sidelined with injury. And so, he, his agents, and the team quickly found a home for him in the District of Columbia.

Coming the other way was microwave combo scorer (now in a sixth man role) CJ McCollum and big-bodied wing Corey Kispert who is equally comfortable shooting or driving on the offensive end. Both are clearly both useful depth players with the former on an expiring contract and the latter on a deal that extends for two more years at $13.5 million annually (plus a team option in 2028-29).

Given the drama that surrounded his financials for half a season, the Hawks did do well to act early and turn the keys to the franchise over to Jalen Johnson. But frankly, they dealt Young at his lowest value and netted just so little in return (they couldn’t even muster one measly pick?).

Time will truly tell if the Wizards can build a consistent winner around Young. But without the benefit of hindsight, I’d have to say the team just barely passed this test — and certainly without flying colors.

Grade: C-

Duop Reath and two second rounders for Vit Krejci

Duop Reath has since been waived, but he was never the true focal point of this deal.

Vit Krejci was an outstanding development story for the Hawks. From arriving from Oklahoma City for very little, to getting cut, to playing for both the Iowa Wolves and later the College Park Skyhawks on a two-way deal. Along the way, he gained more and more confidence in his three-point shot.

By the time he was sent to Portland at this deadline, he had become one of the league’s deadliest three-point shooters. Dating back to 2023-24, he has shot 42% on 4.1 attempts per game.

In the 2024 offseason, he signed a multi-year minimum value deal to remain with the Hawks. But recent moves may have crowded out his position in the rotation going forward.

Atlanta sent him to Portland this week in a deal that allows him to see minutes for a Blazers team that badly needs shooting. And in return, the Hawks netted two second-round picks: their own pick back in 2027 that they gave up in a deal to land Mouhamed Gueye in the 2023 NBA Draft and New York’s 2030 second rounder.

So, they landed two picks for a player they didn’t see in their plans any more — although admittedly a fan favorite on a great contract. Sentimentalities aside, it’s a minor win and nothing more.

Grade: B

Jock Landale for cash considerations

This is an easy one. When did cash considerations ever grab a rebound? Or block a shot? Or put the ball in the bucket?

I promise I had this take prior to Landale’s explosion in his first game with the Hawks. Landale tied his career high in points (26) and assists (5), grabbed a ton of rebounds (11), swatted shots (4), and he set a new career high with made threes (5) in a narrow home win on Thursday.

The burly center brings a level of physicality as a rebounder and space clearer in the lane that the Hawks desperately need, plus he capably stretches the floor to space the court for Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and others to get downhill.

He even drove from Memphis to Atlanta just to open up a can on the Utah Jazz (who were clearly shorthanded and not particularly interested in winning). Landale was in the middle of a breakout season with the Grizzlies before being sent to Utah in the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade, so he decided to take out his revenge on a team that saw no use for him.

With the Jazz facing a roster crunch, especially with their glut of bigs, Atlanta had the wherewithal to pounce and grab him for straight cash, homie.

It’s an obvious A from me.

Grade: A+

Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for Kristaps Porzingis

This is a weird one that I have yet to wrap my brain around.

It’s clear that from Atlanta’s point of view, Porzingis’ continued absences from the lineups were difficult to chew on. No one is to blame here, of course, as ‘KP’ was very open about his battle with post-viral syndrome and/or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Everyone involved believed he was passed those health struggles, but clearly he was not — not to mention a recent Achilles injury that kept him out of his final games with the Hawks.

On the other side, Golden State has had a very public saga with their former number seven overall pick who has largely seen inconsistent minutes at best for a fading dynasty. Steve Kerr made some very candid comments about where things went wrong on Thursday evening:

Steve Kerr to ESPN on Jonathan Kuminga: "He needed the runway to make more mistakes…It was very tough not being allowed to make those mistakes. For us as a staff, it was tricky trying to develop him while we were trying to win. I think it’s as simple as that."

Full quote pic.twitter.com/WNneAegbaP

— Anthony Slater (@anthonyVslater) February 5, 2026

So a deal came together along wherein two teams felt like a change of scenery was best for everyone involved.

Jonathan Kuminga gets a chance to show he can use his athleticism for good and be a focal point for an NBA team. It often gets lost that the talented but mercurial forward is just 23 years old. Atlanta is taking a bet that in a different situation, his pre-draft promise can truly shine. I, however, am less than enthused about that prospect:

Kuminga thoughts

Good: the Hawks are last in the NBA in drives/100 and 29th in free throw rate. JK's downhill pressure will help those areas.

Bad: the Hawks are first in assist rate, but JK is a ball stopper with a career 4 asts/100 and 3.2 TOs/100. I question the fit there.

— Wes (@bloghawk) February 5, 2026

Also, 33-year-old Buddy Hield is along for the ride because why not? You can never have too many shooters. Unlike Kuminga, who has a $24.3 million team option for next year, Hield does also have a $3 million partial guarantee, so the Hawks did pick up a tad bit of future money here.

I really don’t know how this will go, but the Hawks got something for a player who was perpetually absent from the lineup, so I’m a tad cautiously optimistic — although mostly skeptical at best.

There’s very little commitment from either side beyond this year. But it’s just so strange a move that it may just work.

Gabe Vincent and a second rounder for Luke Kennard

It’s tough to see Kennard go just as he picked up the scoring aggression. At first, it looked as though his passivity in games would be an anchor on his impact despite gaudy shooting efficiency.

But once the light switch flipped telling him to look for his shot more, he was a genuine weapon off the bench. He’ll figure to continue that hot streak in LA as he plays off Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and others.

On the other side, Gabe Vincent has not performed as well as hoped when he signed a three-year, $33 million contract off the back of a playoff run with the Miami Heat. In the first season after signing his deal, he had arthroscopic knee surgery and only saw the court for 11 games with the Lakers, all off the bench.

He has bounced back somewhat the past two seasons to be a passable contributor off the bench, but even this year he has dealt with a lumbar back strain.

There’s no doubt that the Lakers are getting the better player in the deal, although Vincent still has some utility as a point guard defender, ball handler and decent three-point shooter. But it’s likely he doesn’t play many if any meaningful minutes off the suddenly logjammed Hawks bench.

Cynically, similar to the Krejci deal above, this trade came down to swapping two players with expiring deals (Vincent makes just $500,000 more than Kennard) so that the Hawks could pick up a Lakers 2032 second-round pick. Kennard could have helped the team more down the stretch of this season, but the long-term outlook was prioritized over the short term here.

Another meh win, I suppose.

The Atlanta Hawks were in action on Thursday evening to face the Utah Jazz. With the NBA trade deadline behind them, the Hawks didn’t have most of the players that they traded for in this matchup, but they were able to have Jock Landale in the lineup after acquiring him yesterday. In fact, Landale made the start at center in his first game with the Hawks.

As for the Jazz, they made a big splash acquiring Jaren Jackson Jr. at the deadline, but he was not active for this game.

Landale made an impact early in the game, grabbing multiple offensive rebounds, knocking down a three-pointer, and getting blocks.

Dyson Daniels was able to knock down a three-pointer earlier in the game.

It was a back and forth game between both teams, and the Hawks were able to get stops when they needed on the defensive end to stay within striking distance.

Landale continued his defensive impact on the court with another block.

Going into the second quarer, the Hawks trailed 31-3o.

To end the first half, the Hawks went on a huge run led by Landale, as he knocked down a few three-pointers to cut the deficit. The Hawks ended up with the lead going into halftime, 61-60.

Both teams traded baskets to start the second half, but it was the Jazz that was able to pull away with the lead for most of the third quarter. Landale continued his hot streak throughout the quarter, and his teammates set him up with easy shots.

Getting down to the stretch of the game, the Hawks were able to execute and get some shots to go down. With a chance to tie the game or take the lead, the Hawks gave up several offensive rebounds, but in the end they were able to get the stop.

Landale came in clutch once again with a big three-pointer to give the Hawks a 117-116 lead.

The Hawks came back down on the other end and got a big stop, and the Jazz had to play the foul game from there. Alexander-Walker made both of the free throws to give the Hawks a three-point lead with 13.8 seconds left.

The Jazz came down after a timeout and knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game, courtesy of Ace Bailey. The Hawks didn’t call a timeout and decided to take the ball down the court, and Alexander-Walker was the player to deliver, knocking down a tough jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining.

Johnson finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists, Landale finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Alexander-Walker finished with 23 points.

The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday to face the Charlotte Hornets.

The Atlanta Hawks were in action on Saturday evening to face the Charlotte Hornets. The Hawks were coming off a clutch win against the Utah Jazz a couple of days ago, with big help from Jock Landale, who made his debut with the team. The Hawks also will have some new players this time around, with Buddy Hield and Gabe Vincent being active.

As for the Hornets, they’re probably the hottest teams in the league, and they came in on a eight-game winning streak.

The Hawks were also able to get Onyeka Okongwu back in the lineup.

The Hawks started the game hot from the three-point line, and Okongwu knocked down two of them early.

Things got a little physical late, with less than two minutes between Okongwu and Mousa Diabate, and they both received technical fouls.

Going into halftime, the Hawks and Hornets were tied at 60.

The Hornets took the lead to start the third, and were up by as much as seven points. That didn’t bother the Hawks, and they started a run that led them to taking the lead.

The Hawks took the lead for a moment, but the Hornets got it back after getting several shots in the paint. The Hornets kept the lead late into the quarter, and the Hawks were able to get some stops to keep it a three-point deficit with 32.1 seconds remaining in the game.

Johnson was able to go to the free throw after getting fouled, and knocked down both to cut their deficit down to one point. The Hawks played the foul game from there, and LaMelo Ball knocked down both to give the Hornets a three-point led again.

The Hawks decided not to call a timeout after the free throws, and though Alexander-Walker was able to get a clean shot to tie the game, he missed. Brandon Miller went to the line and made both of his free throws, and the Hornets found themselves up 124-119 with 12 seconds left.

That ultimately led the Hawks to a loss and extended the Hornets’ win streak to nine games.

Johnson finished with 31 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, Risacher finished with 18 points, and Okongwu finished with 16 points.

The Hawks will be back in action on Monday to face the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Hawks send statement in Miami as Johnson’s triple-double powers wire-to-wire win over Heat

gettyimages-2259805089.jpg

MIAMI, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 03: Dyson Daniels #5 of the Atlanta Hawks drives against Jaime Jaquez Jr. #11 of the Miami Heat during the second quarter of the game at Kaseya Center on February 03, 2026 in Miami, Florida. The Atlanta Hawks sent a clear message Tuesday night, controlling the game from the opening tip and never relinquishing command in a wire-to-wire win over the Miami Heat. The Hawks defeated the Heat 127 – 115. Atlanta came out aggressive and confident, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first half behind sharp ball movement and efficient shooting, while Miami struggled to find offensive rhythm.

Atlanta wasted no time establishing control. Crisp, purposeful passing carved up Miami’s defense early, leading to open three-pointers and downhill driving lanes. The Hawks shot an impressive 13-of-22 in the opening quarter, building a 33–23 lead while holding the Heat to just 38 percent shooting. The early execution set the tone and forced Miami to play catch-up for the rest of the night.

When the starters sat, the Hawks didn’t blink. Atlanta’s second unit brought a noticeable jolt of energy, maintaining pressure on both ends of the floor. Active hands on defense fueled transition opportunities, and the Hawks continued to stretch the floor with confident perimeter shooting. Miami briefly cut into the margin midway through the second quarter, but Atlanta answered with a decisive 9–2 run to reassert control. At halftime, the Hawks held a 58–47 advantage — a reflection of efficiency and discipline rather than unsustainable shooting.

Predictably, Miami came out of the locker room with renewed urgency. Defensive pressure ramped up, the pace quickened, and the Heat trimmed the deficit to six midway through the third quarter. But this is where Atlanta showed its growth. Instead of forcing shots or rushing possessions, the Hawks leaned into execution. They slowed the game, hunted favorable matchups, and continued to generate quality looks. Every time Miami threatened to seize momentum, Atlanta responded with a timely bucket or a crucial defensive stop. Entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks still held a comfortable 10-point cushion.

At the center of it all was Jalen Johnson, who continues to make triple-doubles feel routine. Johnson delivered another all-around masterpiece, finishing with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. He attacked mismatches in the paint, stepped confidently into open jumpers, and consistently made the right read when Miami sent extra help, serving as the engine behind Atlanta’s offense.

Veteran leadership also played a major role, as CJ McCollum led the way with a polished scoring performance. McCollum scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three, mixing pull-up jumpers with deep-range shots to keep Miami’s defense honest. His shot-making opened the floor for everyone else and prevented the Heat from loading up defensively.

Atlanta’s depth again proved decisive. Luke Kennard provided a spark with 12 points on near-perfect shooting, while Corey Kispert added 11 points and high-energy minutes off the bench. Zaccharie Risacher chipped in across the board, making his presence felt on the glass and with smart positional defense.

First-timer to stay busy during All-Star weekend

Jalen Johnson has ascended in meteoric fashion during his five-year basketball career.

Johnson has gone from G Leaguer, to rotation player, to franchise cornerstone in that short span. And now, he’s been named to his first All-Star Game in his career. The weekend festivities will take place in southern California, primarily in the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, the home of the Clippers.

But that won’t be his only involvement next weekend. It was recently announced that he will join fellow Duke Blue Devils Kon Knueppel, a rookie phenom, and Corey Maggette, a retired 14-year NBA veteran, in the NBA All-Star Weekend Shooting Stars Challenge.

In that competition, he’ll take on these three other trios:

  • Team All-Star: Scottie Barnes, Chet Holmgren, Richard “Rip” Hamilton
  • Team Harper: Derek Harper, Ron Harper Jr., Ron Harper Sr.
  • Team Knicks: Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony-Towns, Allan Houston

The contest makes its first appearance since the 2015 All-Star weekend. In it, there are seven spots on the floor with which the players can shoot from and earn various amounts of points with 70 seconds. Please see the attached PDF for a full set of rules and regulations.

Many will remember franchise icon Dominique Wilkins not only taking part in three straight competitions but winning the three most recent editions of the competition — a veritable dynasty as part of Team Bosh with NBA star Chris Bosh and WNBA star Swin Cash.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 14 after 5 PM EST on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

Shorthanded Hawks can’t recover from second quarter burst

gettyimages-2260808730.jpg

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - FEBRUARY 09: CJ McCollum #3 of the Atlanta Hawks dribbles the ball against Jaden McDaniels #3 and Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the fourth quarter at Target Center on February 09, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One decisive quarter proved too much for the Atlanta Hawks to overcome.

The Hawks surrendered 40 points in the second quarter and never fully recovered in a 138–116 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night at Target Center.

Atlanta was shorthanded, as Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels were both ruled out before tipoff. Johnson missed the game due to left knee inflammation after being listed as questionable on the injury report. The Hawks opted to sit him as a precaution in the second game of a back-to-back road set.

Daniels was also held out with right ankle inflammation after being listed as questionable earlier in the day, as the team chose to prioritize his recovery.

Despite the absences, the Hawks showed early fight, trading baskets with Minnesota in an up-tempo first quarter and trailing by just seven points.

The game swung decisively in the second quarter, however, as Minnesota capitalized on defensive breakdowns, pushed the pace and found open lanes to the basket. The Timberwolves shot efficiently and used crisp ball movement to stretch the margin to double digits by halftime.

Atlanta showed resilience coming out of the break, trimming the deficit in the third quarter behind improved ball movement and shot-making. But the Hawks were unable to string together enough defensive stops to seriously threaten Minnesota down the stretch, as each run was quickly answered.

The Hawks were led offensively by CJ McCollum, who finished with a game-high 38 points and kept Atlanta afloat even as the deficit grew. Nickeil Alexander-Walker turned in a strong all-around performance with 23 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Onyeka Okongwu added 14 points and five rebounds, while Corey Kispert and Jock Landale each scored 12 points.

For Minnesota, Anthony Edwards led the way with 30 points, consistently breaking down Atlanta’s defense. Julius Randle recorded a triple-double, and Rudy Gobert was perfect from the field, anchoring the paint on both ends as the Timberwolves controlled the game.

The loss dropped Atlanta to 26–29 on the season and underscored the challenge of sustaining defensive intensity against elite Western Conference teams.

While the Hawks’ offense continues to show it can score with anyone, turning games like this into wins will require consistent defensive effort over full quarters, not just brief stretches.

Risacher named as replacement to Rising Stars challenge

Last year’s number one overall draft pick Zaccharie Risacher was overlooked on the initial list for the 2026 Rising Stars event at the All-Star Weekend that will take place in under a week’s time. I outlined his injury-riddled disappointing second season earlier.

But with Ajay Mitchell of the Oklahoma City Thunder ruled out for the challenge due to injury, the NBA needed to backfill one of the sophomore spots. Today, we got some fortunate news for Risacher:

Hawks forward Zaccharie Risacher will replace Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell on Team T-Mac in the 2026 Castrol Rising Stars (2/13, 9 PM ET, Peacock).

Risacher will compete in Rising Stars for the second straight year. Mitchell is out with an abdominal strain. pic.twitter.com/3wh51WecGK

— NBA Communications (@NBAPR) February 10, 2026

Risacher is averaging 10.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game — both figures fewer than his rookie season when he finished second in Rookie of the Year voting.
