Eagles-Chargers Film Review: Weirdly, there were some positive signs on offense

imagn-27775759.jpg

This one might surprise you, but I’m going to focus on some more of the positives this week. I’ve been highly critical of this offense all season long, but weirdly, there were some positive signs to cling to this week. I can’t be bothered to write about the same rubbish stuff we have seen all season long. Let’s try to look at what has changed and what remains the same. At times, this one contained the worst version of Jalen Hurts we’ve seen in years, and it was a reminder that when this offense is bad, it is catastrophically bad. But there was some stuff I liked about this performance.

Offense

The type of concept is exactly what we’ve been begging for, but no one is open. It’s excellent coverage by a very good defense. Hurts processes it correctly and throws a ball that should go for an explosive gain. Instead, AJ Brown drops it. This was a missed opportunity that immediately set the tone for the day. AJ Brown is usually very reliable, but he had some huge drops in this game.

Eagles' Offense All22 Thread vs. Chargers. 1) Ah, what could have been. The Eagles ran way more concepts this week, where they flooded one side of the field, which is good! No one is open here, so Hurts gets backside and plays buddy ball with AJ Brown. Sadly, AJ can't haul it in.… pic.twitter.com/8tXoCe5go5

The shotgun run game remains one of the most fundamentally broken parts of the offense. The Eagles’ interior simply can’t create any push strain out of the shotgun. What are Jordan Mailata and Dallas Goedert doing here? It’s the same story week after week. The coaches keep calling inside zone from shotgun as if something will magically change. It’s a reminder that the “bad” parts of this offense are catastrophically bad. Even though the run game had some more success, they still had far too many negative runs.

2) Eagles' run game showed some life from under center in this game, but the shotgun run game was a disaster. Just a total nightmare. They get 0 push here. I have no clue what Goedert and Mailata are doing. Mailata doesn't help out Dickerson much and then blocks no one. Goedert's… pic.twitter.com/y6DR1Xuj3C

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This is better. Under-center, downhill, with double-teams actually generating displacement. The difference here is night and day from the clip above. The blocking is cleaner, the angles look more natural, and Saquon Barkley looks like Barkley again because he has space to work! The Eagles look more comfortable running the ball this way. When the Eagles get under center and lead with double teams at the line of scrimmage, good things seem to happen.

Coaching Malpractice in a nutshell 👇

Saquon Barkley Rushing Stats:
Under Center – 10 carries for 102 yards (10.2 ypc), 1 TD, 50% success rate.
Shotgun – 10 carries for 22 yards, (2.2 ypc), 10% success rate.

If you remove the 52-yard TD from UC because it was gimmicky, it's…

— Shane Haff (@ShaneHaffNFL) December 9, 2025

Plays like this show there is a path forward, but only if the staff commits to the version of the run game that actually functions.

3) However, the Eagles did remember that if they run from under center and focus on getting double teams inside, the run game suddenly works.

Here's a crazy thought… maybe do this stuff a little more? Barkly had 10 under center runs and 10 shotgun runs. How about we do more of… pic.twitter.com/IFqQMWeNJY

This is one of Hurts’ bad moments and one of the clearest examples of him overcorrecting into unnecessary aggression. The Chargers are in 2-man. Nothing is there. The design doesn’t give him a winning option, and the corner has leverage on AJ. The design provides him with nothing here. That doesn’t absolve him of blame. Hurts forces a ball that never had a chance. It’s almost like you can see the internal battle he’s fighting. I’m guessing the staff has been preaching conservatism and now wants the offense to take more risks. It felt like Hurts went too far in the other direction. The balance was off.

4) I think Hurts was frustrated at times in this one and started forcing things. I'm guessing there was an emphasis on being more aggressive, and Hurts took it too far. This is a terrible play call against 2-man, and Hurts has to try to make a play with his legs. Trying to fit… pic.twitter.com/JKmI0N2Jyo

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

Everything about this play shows a staff finally trying to stress a defense horizontally and vertically at the same time. It’s lovely. There were some good designs in this game. Goedert’s route crosses into open space, and Hurts has an easy throw. It’s almost like the staff can scheme open receivers when they move beyond the static hitches and mirrored concepts that have bogged this offense down. Goedert’s YAC ability also finally mattered again, something missing for weeks. YAC is a coaching and QB stat; it’s not just on the receivers themselves. The frustration isn’t that they can’t do it, it’s that they don’t do it often enough.

5) Hey, we saw some cool stuff in this game. There were a lot of designs I liked. I'm not kidding! We saw a few more designed rollouts. Here, the Eagles run post cross wheel and leak Goedert out the other side that Hurts is rolling too. They also use Pony personnel (2 backs) to… pic.twitter.com/PWWKc1e7gb

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This is another beauty. I love this. This is the kind of sequencing good offenses build around. Play-action that looks like earlier runs and concepts that put stress on defenders. This is where the optimism comes from this week. When the Eagles moved toward a more varied, layered passing game, the results were genuinely encouraging.

6) Again, more good stuff! Under center play-action with Hurts throwing into intermediate zones after flooding one side of the field. This checks a lot of boxes. I am OK with committing to more of an under center game plan and seeing more play-action pass plays like this. This… pic.twitter.com/U39mxse2ZI

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This was Hurts’ worst play of the season. He immediately eliminates the first side of the read and doesn’t work through the combination backside long enough to see Jahan Dotson popping open. Instead, he forces a ball into an area dominated by coverage defenders and a dropping defensive tackle sitting in the window. This is a bad one. He doesn’t make throws like this often, and he will be the first to admit this is not good enough.

7) Obviously, a rough one from Hurts. This just can't happen. It looks like he is eliminating the left side of the field (the concept gives him nothing to go to) so he has to get back to the other side. If he worked past AJ Brown he would see that Dotson is coming open. However,… pic.twitter.com/bYDc4mcceC

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This interception is more of a structural failure than a Hurts error. You cannot run heavy hitch-based concepts against a defense whose corners trigger downhill this violently. I said this in the preview! The Chargers’ DB jumps it easily because he’s seen this exact route from the Eagles all year. DeVonta Smith slipping only makes the result worse, but the real issue is that the Eagles keep calling predictable concepts that don’t threaten defenses. The Eagles’ passing game has to evolve beyond these staples. We saw signs of it in this one, and we need to keep evolving.

8) This one is a bit more complicated. This is another example of design not helping anyone out. The Eagles did not run as many hitches in this one (based on what I saw, anyway) but Donte Jackson just reads this the whole way.

I said in the preview that the Chargers DBs are too… pic.twitter.com/6vbr7wuUo0

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

Another design I like! Another example that some of the new stuff is genuinely working. This is exactly what the offense should look more like. The challenge is whether the staff actually commits to this approach or whether it becomes another one-game blip before retreating back into stale structures because they are scared of the turnovers.

9) Once again, under center play-action flood concept and Hurts hits AJ perfectly. Beautiful. We saw far fewer 2×2 static concepts and a lot more expansive passing plays in this one. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected.

I really hope the Eagles' offense doesn't just go… pic.twitter.com/E7vZYRKGwb

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This run is one of the best-executed plays of the game. There are some fantastic blocks, as well as the obvious disguise. Mailata’s reach is excellent. Goedert seals the edge. Darius Cooper makes a great block, and might start taking WR3 snaps away from Dotson if he blocks like this. Barkley reads it decisively and bursts upfield for a long touchdown.

10) Some lovely blocks on this one. It's cool to see Darius Cooper getting after the safety. Mailata does an exceptional job reaching the wide edge defender and Goedert pops the corner. Good stuff! pic.twitter.com/uNuwjzLzC7

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

From the broadcast, this looked like Hurts throwing a bad hospital ball. But on film, it’s much more of a drop. Hurts puts the ball where it needs to be, Brown has a chance to secure it, and instead it falls incomplete. These are the plays that swing games, especially on a night where Hurts desperately needed someone to help stabilize the offense. The QB was already playing poorly, but some of the excellent throws he made weren’t rewarded. AJ Brown will be disappointed with his drops in this one.

11) I thought this was a bit of a hospital ball live, but I think differently from this view. When Hurts releases it, AJ Brown has a decent chance of catching this. I don't love these throws because the receivers can take serious hits, and Hurts rarely throws them, but I think… pic.twitter.com/rauSvzFcS7

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

Please, stop doing this. Asking Tyler Steen and Grant Calcaterra to pull in counter is a waste of a down. Can we just replace every run like this with under center duo? This is a coaching failure, not a player failure. Steen isn’t strong enough to create displacement at the line of scrimmage, and Calcaterra is just bad. The Chargers wreck the play instantly because it’s obvious the Eagles don’t have the bodies to make this structure work. Just, don’t do this stuff anymore. Please.

12) The Eagles will have an interesting decision to make on Tyler Steen in the off-season. I think in pass pro, he's been good, but he gets no push in the run game right now. He's not moving anyone.

Running counter and pulling Steen and Calcaterra is as dumb as it gets. Just,… pic.twitter.com/RhiDqJnTvJ

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

This is the drop that probably frustrated Hurts the most. It’s a perfect read against the blitz. It’s a perfect throw. It’s a moment to flip the narrative after a pretty terrible performance. However, AJ Brown lets it bounce off his hands. This isn’t about blaming one player; AJ Brown is as good as it gets at this stuff. He just had an off night. However, the offense cannot afford its best players failing to finish plays when the quarterback is having a bad day. This could have been a significant turning point. I will give Hurts credit for staying aggressive and continuing to try to make plays when things were going wrong.

13) This is the most depressing AJ Brown drop of the game because he makes this exact play all the time. The Chargers blitz, and Hurts puts it right on the money down the field. This is a perfect throw that you want your number 1 receiver to catch. Hurts clearly did not play… pic.twitter.com/1mCwdrZ0jW

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

The screens… oh boy. What can you say about this? They are abysmal. They are predictable, slow-developing, poorly spaced, and entirely unsupported by motion or misdirection. Defenses know they are coming because they always look the same, always come from the same formations, and never create any stress. What are they actually doing here? What is the plan? The Chargers blow this up instantly because it’s an awful design. These are wasted downs. The offense would instantly improve if you binned all these screen passes to receivers.

Then, out of nowhere, Hurts drops one of the best throws he’s made all season. After four interceptions. In overtime. On 3rd and long. Just pause this throw when he releases it. It’s a beauty. Hurts isn’t known for throwing with anticipation to the middle of the field, but we have seen progress the past couple of weeks, despite the overall poor play. Imagine if the Eagles’ coaches gave him a chance to make a throw like this on the 3rd and long you can see above?

15) One of the best throws of Hurts' career, without a doubt. On 3rd and long in overtime, he delivers this strike. Do yourself a favour and pause when Hurts releases the ball. That is anticipation.

I will give Hurts credit for staying aggressive after multiple turnovers. Sadly,… pic.twitter.com/0ibNSTEjL9

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 9, 2025

And then the overtime interception. Ugh. This sucks. This is the classic RPO flat with DeVonta Smith faking to block and releasing that we saw last week. First of all, Hurts should hand this off to Barkley. I have no idea why he keeps it. The EDGE defender forces him backward, and he tries to force it into an impossibly small window as he falls. He can’t do this. The Chargers’ corner closes the window instantly. The Chargers’ secondary was awesome, and we have to give them some credit. But in a tied game. In overtime. On first down. Hurts can’t make this throw. It’s not the type of mistake that Hurts makes very often, but I think he was pushing in this game and playing a little bit too much ‘hero-ball’. Despite all this, the Eagles must strike a balance between their former conservative play and this newly reckless overcorrection. Hurts must learn when to push and not to. This was not the moment to get aggressive.

16) As stated above, it ended in defeat because of this. I have no clue why Hurts doesn't hand the ball off. The EDGE is watching Hurts, which causes Hurts to fade back. The Eagles run the same RPO they had success with last week, but the Chargers are ready.

Hurts is too… pic.twitter.com/ge4Xr0DBD6

Final Thoughts

In the end, this was a maddening offensive performance because it somehow contained both the most evident signs of progress we’ve seen in weeks, and the most self-destructive football of Jalen Hurts’ career. 2 of the turnovers were inexcusable. But the under-center game was effective, and some of the route concepts were finally layered and purposeful.

The problem is that the bad remains catastrophically bad. The shotgun run game is a dead end. The operation still fails in high-leverage situations. And Hurts, who usually covers up structural cracks, is now contributing to them. You can feel the offense searching for a new balance, and they haven’t found it yet. They went from ultra-conservatism to over-aggressiveness. I really hope the coaching staff doesn’t resort to ultra-conservatism because that would be the wrong thing to do, in my opinion. You have to give the Chargers’ defense a lot of credit. Their pass defense is exceptional. I called it in the preview!

But despite the loss, despite the turnovers, this wasn’t a hopeless performance. If the Eagles commit to the things that actually worked, the under-center identity, the layered concepts, the defined reads, and strip away the stale, predictable, broken parts of the playbook, this offense still has the talent to get back to being dangerous. It isn’t fixed. It isn’t even close to being fixed. It probably won’t get fixed. But I’m choosing to focus on some of the positives…

Eagles reportedly set to face their former backup quarterback in Week 15

gettyimages-2250605651.jpg

Former Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett is likely to start against the Birds when the Las Vegas Raiders visit Lincoln Financial Field in Week 15.

Pickett is the Raiders’ backup quarterback but starter Geno Smith is unlikely to play due to a shoulder injury suffered in Week 14, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Is this definitely a downgrade for the Raiders? Smith has been pretty terrible; he’s thrown 16 touchdown passes to 14 interceptions for a 84.5 passer rating. Pickett completed eight of his 11 attempts for 97 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions, and a 129.7 passer rating in relief of Smith against the Denver Broncos.

Of course, that’s a very small sample size. And Pickett’s success took place late in the fourth quarter with the Broncos already up by 17 points. Probably safe to say Denver wasn’t going all out to stop the Raiders at that point as much as they were playing prevent defense.

The much larger sample of Pickett’s entire career suggests he shouldn’t be much of a threat to an Eagles defense that’s coming off another strong game. Whereas Smith has thrown 16 touchdowns to 14 interceptions in 13 starts this season, Pickett has thrown 16 touchdowns to 14 in 25 starts over his entire career. The New Jersey native’s career passer rating is 79.9.

In fairness to Pickett, his last start was a good one with a strong showing for Philly against the Dallas Cowboys last year. But his support system with the Raiders is certainly much less optimal than what he was working with as a member of the 2024 Eagles.

For as much as there’s legitimate reason to be skeptical about the Eagles’ outlook right now, I’m selling the idea of Pickett coming to Philly for a “revenge game” win over his former team. He’s not good. Vic Fangio is.

Now, it’s entirely possible the Eagles’ offense doesn’t play well yet again. But the Raiders’ offense is probably even worse.

There’s a reason the Eagles are 11.5-point home favorites despite losing their last three games. The Raiders stink, regardless of whether it’s Smith or Pickett under center.

Eagles open practice window for Charley Hughlett

gettyimages-2238216936.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles opened the 21-day practice window for 35-year-old long snapper Charley Hughlett to return from injured reserve, according to an official team announcement.

This development was expected after the Eagles waived Cal Adomitis on Tuesday evening.

Hughlett suffered a core injury in late September that required surgery. He’s now presumably healthy enough to suit up again. The Eagles have until 4:00 PM Eastern on Saturday, December 13 to activate Hughlett from IR in time to play against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

There’s reason to believe Hughlett’s return to the field is the key to saving the Eagles’ 2025 season and Jake Elliott’s career:

FWIW

Eagles record with Charley Hughlett: 4-0
Eagles record with Cal Adomitis: 4-5

Jake Elliott misses with Hughlett: 0
Jake Elliott misses with Adomitis: 6https://t.co/xQfUojoYPD

— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) December 9, 2025

The Eagles originally signed Hughlett in March, somewhat surprisingly opting not to retain two-time Super Bowl champion Rick Lovato. There was thought that Lovato was going to call it a career but he had a nine-game stint with the Los Angeles Chargers before he then retired in early November.

Eagles Injury Report: Lane Johnson on track to miss Raiders game and his backup was limited

gettyimages-2241956463.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles issued their second official injury report in advance of their Week 15 home game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Eagles listed three players under DID NOT PARTICIPATE: Lane Johnson, Jalen Carter, and Landon Dickerson.

A second straight DNP for Lane Johnson indicates the Eagles’ starting right tackle is on track to miss Sunday’s game. Additional reporting from Jeff McLane also suggests as much.

Carter is on track to miss his second straight start.

Dickerson was DNP on Thursday after being listed as limited on Wednesday. He had “rest” added to this injury description, however, so it seems like he should be able to suit up on Sunday. The Eagles also rested Dickerson in their second practice of the week leading up to Week 14. Brett Toth is the top backup at left guard.

The Eagles listed one player under LIMITED PARTICIPATION: Fred Johnson.

Fred Johnson is a new addition to the injury report with an ankle issue. It seems like he got banged up during Thursday’s practice. It’s certainly not a good development for the Eagles if neither Lane Johnson nor Fred Johnson can play right tackle on Sunday. The team would be down to their third-string option at that point … and it’s probably Matt Pryor, who struggled and got benched in favor of Fred Johnson earlier this season. Pryor going up against Maxx Crosby? Yikes! We’ll find out more about this situation when the Eagles issue their final injury report on Friday.

The Eagles listed three players under FULL PARTICIPATION: Zack Baun, Charley Hughlett, and Cameron Williams.

Baun and Hughlett were full go for the second day in a row. The latter is likely to be activated from injured reserve in time to play on Sunday.

The Eagles opened Williams’ 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve on Thursday. With Lane Johnson still injured and Fred Johnson getting banged up, perhaps they’re looking to boost their offensive tackle depth. To be determined if the team will actually activate Williams from IR or just let his window eventually expire, like they did with Willie Lampkin and Myles Hinton.

Backup running back (and former Eagle) Raheem Mostert was added to the injury report with a knee injury. He did not practice.

The Raiders upgraded star edge rusher Maxx Crosby, starting linebacker Jamal Adams, starting nickel cornerback Jeremy Chinn, and third tight end Ian Thomas from DNP on Wednesday to limited on Thursday.

Jason Kelce gets brutally honest about the Eagles’ positivity bunny

gettyimages-2246082476.jpg

The Eagles were looking to bounce back after an embarrassing loss to the Bears, and A.J. Dillon decided that the locker room needed some good vibes by way of a gigantic inflatable Easter bunny. It seemed like something that could help the situation, but after their Monday night loss to the Chargers, the playful decoration was removed.

Former Eagles captain Jason Kelce spoke about the positivity bunny on the most recent episode of ‘New Heights,’ and gave his honest opinion about the silly addition to the locker room last week.

“If I’m being very brutally honest, I thought it was a surprise to see the rabbit, because, I’m like, it’s a sign of just too much joking around with something that I think is actually like, you should be really f***ing pissed off about the way you’re playing.

It’s okay to be positive, but this is something you do when everything’s rolling and you’re freaking performing well. You don’t do antics like this when you’ve shit the bed for the last couple weeks.“

Kelce’s opinion didn’t stray far from many fans, who saw the gimmick as nothing more than a distraction to the real problems the team’s been having.

Both Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts have been quoting Jeff Stoutland this week, emphasizing that execution fuels emotion, and if they want better vibes, they need to play better football. It’s something they’re certainly capable of, but have failed to do over the past several weeks — but hopefully they can put together a big win against the Raiders and use it to fuel the vibes they’re searching for as they look to the end of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Eagles-Raiders Final Injury Report: Fred Johnson will play

imagn-27085880.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles issued their third and final official injury report in advance of their Week 15 home game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Two players were ruled OUT: Jalen Carter and Lane Johnson.

Carter will miss his second straight start. The Eagles will roll with Moro Ojomo, Jordan Davis, Bryon Young, Brandon Graham playing more often on the interior, and Ty Robinson at defensive tackle. The Eagles were largely able to take advantage of the Los Angeles Chargers’ bad offensive line in Week 14. They should be expected to do so again against a bad Raiders offensive line on Sunday.

There was originally some hope that Lane Johnson might be able to play in Week 15 (otherwise the Eagles could’ve just put him on injured reserve when he first got hurt) but he didn’t practice this week. Maybe he has a chance to return in Week 16.

The Eagles ruled one player QUESTIONABLE: Cameron Williams.

Williams was a full participant in practice the past two days after the team opened his 21-day window to return from injured reserve on Thursday. The guess here is the Eagles aren’t rushing to activate him for Sunday’s game. The team has until 4:00 PM Eastern on Saturday, December 13 to activate him or not if they want him to be available against the Raiders.

Fred Johnson, Landon Dickerson, Zack Baun, and Charley Hughlett are all listed without a game status.

This means they’re ready to play despite appearing on the injury report this week.

Fred Johnson was upgraded to full go on Friday after unexpectedly being added to Thursday’s report with an ankle injury. And so he’ll once again start at right tackle in place of an injured Lane Johnson. Big test for Big Fred as he goes up against Maxx Crosby.

Dickerson was back in full on Friday after resting on Thursday.

Baun was full go all week.

The Eagles officially activated Hughlett from injured reserve to be their long snapper. They waived Cal Adomitis earlier this week and he went unclaimed.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES INJURY REPORT (FRIDAY)

OUT

DT Jalen Carter (shoulders)
OT Lane Johnson (foot)

QUESTIONABLE

OT Cameron Williams (shoulder)

RESERVE/RETIRED

CB Jaire Alexander
EDGE Za’Darius Smith

Smith unexpectedly retired from football on October 13. Alexander was placed on this list on November 12.

RESERVE/INJURED

OT Myles Hinton
G/C Willie Lampkin
S Andrew Mukuba
EDGE Azeez Ojulari
EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo
FB Ben VanSumeren
OT Cameron Williams (practice window open)
WR Johnny Wilson

The Eagles opened Williams’ 21-day practice window to return from IR on December 11. Ojulari is currently eligible to return from IR. Mukuba is eligible to return from IR after Week 16 (TBD if he’ll be healthy enough to play again this season). The practice windows to return from IR were previously opened for Lampkin and Hinton but the Eagles did not activate them before they closed, thus ending their seasons. BVS, Wilson, and Okoronkwo suffered season-ending injuries.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS INJURY REPORT (FRIDAY)

The Raiders ruled three players OUT: starting quarterback Geno Smith, starting left tackle Kolton Miller, and depth wide receiver Alex Bachman.

Smith’s absence means Eagles Super Bowl LIX champion Kenny Pickett will start against his former team. Vic Fangio’s defense should be expected to significantly limit Pickett.

Miller’s absence means the Raiders will continue to start Stone Forsythe at left tackle. He’s allowed a league-high 10 sacks of any tackle this season.

Bachman has been the Raiders’ primary punt returner this season.

The Raiders ruled three players QUESTIONABLE: starting nickel cornerback Jeremy Chinn, starting center Jordan Meredith, and third tight end Ian Thomas.

Chinn missed practice on Wednesday before being limited on Thursday and Friday.

Meredith was full go in practice all week.

Thomas was upgraded in practice each day.

Eagles-Raiders Game Preview: 5 questions and answers with the Week 15 enemy

imagn-27522148.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to snap their three-game losing streak by beating the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

In order to preview this Week 15 matchup, I reached out to our enemies over at Silver And Black Pride. The magnificent Matt Holder kindly took the time took the time to answer my questions about this upcoming battle. Let’s take a look at the answers.

[For my answers to Matt’s questions about the Eagles, check out SAPB.]

1 – Do you think Kenny Pickett starting could be an upgrade on Geno Smith at this point? Why or why not?

It can’t get much worse!

Geno has been pretty awful this season. He’s been playing more like a rookie quarterback, holding onto the ball too long and taking too many sacks, and forcing throws that lead to turnovers. While those were a few of his biggest issues in the past, the Raiders haven’t been getting the high-level throws from that helped Smith overcome those flaws with the Seahawks.

When Geno went down last week against the Broncos, Pickett got his first meaningful snaps in Las Vegas and led two scoring drives. Granted, those were in garbage time, but he showed better pocket mobility than Smith to help overcome some of the offensive line issues and was more decisive with the football. I’m not holding out much hope, but the former Eagle may be the best quarterback on the Raiders’ roster right now.

2 – What’s the biggest matchup working in the Raiders’ favor in this game?

If Lane Johnson doesn’t return, then I’d say Maxx Crosby against Fred Johnson. Crosby hasn’t been as dominant as a pass-rusher this season, primarily because opponents divert all of their attention to him since the Raiders don’t have another noteworthy defensive lineman. But he still has nine sacks and has been a force against the run, already logging a career-high 25 tackles for loss.

If Johnson is back in the lineup, then I’ll go with the Raiders’ other notable player, Brock Bowers. I don’t know if there’s a specific one-on-one matchup to highlight because each team seems to play Bowers differently. Some defenses will treat Bowers like a No. 1 receiver and put their top cornerback on him, while others go the more traditional route of slowing down a tight end. Either way, he’s hard to stop when the Raiders have someone who can get the ball to him. The latter has been a big problem this season, though…

3 – What’s the biggest matchup working in the Eagles’ favor in this game?

Even if Jalen Carter misses another game, it’s the Eagles’ defensive line against the Raiders’ offensive line. Las Vegas has been one of the worst teams in the trenches this season, while Philadelphia has a deep front four. Jordan Davis, Jaelan Phillips, Nolan Smith and the rest of the crew should have a field day on Sunday.

One o-lineman whom I am curious to see how he performs is rookie third-round pick Caleb Rogers. The guard made his regular-season debut a couple of weeks ago and has been good so far. This week is a different test, though.

4 – If you could steal one player from the Eagles’ roster to add to the Raiders, who would you pick and why?

This is going to be kind of funny because the Raiders had a chance to draft him, but went with Tyree Wilson instead: Jalen Carter.

As referenced above, Las Vegas’ defensive line needs someone to take the pressure and attention away from Crosby. That was supposed to be Christian Wilkins before that situation went completely haywire at the beginning of training camp, and Carter is one of the best interior pass-rushers in the game. I think if his incident at Georgia had not been similar to and just a few months after Henry Ruggs III’s incident, the Raiders would have drafted Carter.

5 – Who wins this game and why? With the Eagles currently listed as 11.5-point home favorites, what’s your score prediction?

I think the Eagles win, but I like the Raiders to cover the spread. Philadelphia should be able to dominate both sides of the trenches, as this could be an opportunity to help get Saquon Barkley going and get the running game right heading into the playoffs. However, the Eagles’ offense also has problems with the passing attack, so Las Vegas could keep this one close. Plus, Pete Carroll proved last week he pays attention to the spread, angering the gambling community by kicking a meaningless field goal to get the cover.

I’ll go 20-13 Eagles for my score prediction.

Eagles Opponent Film Room: Scouting the Las Vegas Raiders’ defense

imagn-26916954.jpg

Each week, I dive into the film of the Eagles’ upcoming opponent to get a feel for who they really are. Think of it less as a stats preview and more as an overview of what shows up repeatedly on film, and what the Eagles will be facing.

This should be a get-right performance for Philadelphia’s offense. I am hoping we see some of the progress we made last week (minus the turnovers) carry over into this week’s performance against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Pass Defense

The structural issues start with this defense pre-snap. The Raiders rarely disguise coverage, barely rotate, and primarily play Cover 3 and Cover 1. Additionally, they play in base personnel more than any team in the NFL for half a decade, leaving slow linebackers and below-average safeties on the field against modern passing concepts. The defense feels a little outdated.

Quick Raiders' Defense All22 Thread. 1) Obviously, they are nowhere near as bad as the offense, but I still wasn't impressed. They barely rotate or disguise coverage and it feels extremely predictable. There is a lot of spot drop or predictable man coverage that good offenses can… pic.twitter.com/vwclbw8gwV

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

This defense plays tough, and they are not bad because of a lack of effort, but because the structure is slow and the personnel are insufficient. There is little pattern-matching, little disguise, little simulated pressure, and almost no multiplicity. These are things that all good modern defenses do. If the Eagles cannot move the ball against this defense, it says far more about Philadelphia’s offensive issues than anything Las Vegas is capable of.

2) This feels like watching the NFL from decades ago. 4 vertical routes vs. clear Cover 3 with no real match elements. It's so easy. The Eagles will have opportunities to take advantage of single-high in this game. pic.twitter.com/mdjut5zWM2

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

No player embodies the issues with this defense than Devin White. He plays almost every snap, but I don’t think he is playing very well at all. He is targeted, manipulated, and schemed into mismatches every week, and offenses treat him like the matchup they must attack. The Eagles must do the same!

3) Good things happen when you target Devin White (45) as a run defender and in coverage. He's still not very good. You can get after him with misdirection, and he just looks confused a lot of the time. The Raiders play a ton of base defense so he's on the field all the time! pic.twitter.com/imjsSYycKN

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

The defensive roster is thin everywhere. Their secondary features multiple young players who should not be playing full-time NFL roles yet. Their pass rush, outside of Max Crosby, is virtually nonexistent. Crosby remains the only real threat, playing through knee and shoulder injuries but still carrying elite effort and motor. With Lane Johnson out, this becomes a crucial matchup, but it’s not enough to compensate for the deficiencies everywhere else. The Eagles should try to chip Crosby and prevent him from getting pressure. They really do not have much on defense outside of him.

5) Crosby is an awesome pass rusher still. Outside of him, they don't have much else, though. Without Lane Johnson, I'd expect the Eagles to try to chip him because if you can stop him, you should stop the Raiders' pass rush. Tyree Wilson has his moments but hasn't really… pic.twitter.com/hSBPox62gZ

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

The Raiders’ defense plays hard for Pete Caroll, and it isn’t terrible, but the offense puts them in tough situations, and they aren’t good enough to compensate. The Eagles should come out and throw on this defense because I have less faith in the run game this week…

Run Defense

The run defense is better than the pass defense, primarily because they commit extra bodies to the box via heavy base looks. The issue is that this is also why their pass defense is bad. They leave slow players on the field to defend horizontal and vertical spacing concepts, which they simply cannot match. But they are at least structurally sound early in games against the run. They play hard, they fit downhill, and Crosby is a real factor as a backside chaser.

4) The run defense is pretty decent, largely because they stack the box and play a ton of base, and have Max Crosby! Crosby is still awesome and so physical against the run. I hope the Eagles don't repeatedly run into these stacked boxes for no gain on early downs on Sunday. pic.twitter.com/k8GQ2lC2hz

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

Still, the unit wears down late because they’re forced to defend for 35–40 minutes every week due to the offense sucking. Once the DL tires, cutback lanes and second-level gaps open quickly. Their LB group is slow laterally, and Devin White’s misreads consistently create advantages for offenses willing to press, bounce, or manipulate run fits. You can get outside on this defense. I would like to see some under center toss plays to the opposite side of Crosby.

6) If I had to get the ground game going, I'd run away from Crosby and get to the outside. If you can use motion to confuse their linebackers and Devin White, then even better. I think they can be vulnerable at the 2nd level, especially on outside runs. Just always go at 45. He's… pic.twitter.com/LH8TDsxBGK

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) December 11, 2025

Early down success may be limited against this defense, but I wouldn’t give up on the run. The Eagles should show heavy looks and run at times to get the Raiders into base personnel, and then throw. I wouldn’t give up running on early downs, even though it’s a pretty good run defense.

Final Thoughts

There is no getting around it: The Eagles must win this game, and the offense must look competent doing it. I don’t want a 16-7 win. I want the offense to score points and look good doing it. The Raiders are in the middle of a full organizational teardown. Their defense is outdated, slow, poorly constructed, and undermanned. Outside of Maxx Crosby, there is not much talent here at all.

This is the exact type of matchup where the Eagles should re-establish rhythm and regain confidence. If they don’t? It says everything about where this team truly is heading into the final month. I will lose all optimism I have left if they can’t look good this week.

Sunday Night Football: Vikings vs. Cowboys

gettyimages-2250117303.jpg

The NFL Week 15 slate of Sunday games will cap off with a Sunday Night Football matchup between the Minnesota Vikings (5-8) and the Dallas Cowboys (6-6-1).

The Philadelphia Eagles will obviously be rooting for a Cowboys loss here.

The Cowboys lead the all-time regular season series between these teams, 15-12, and have won five of their six most-recent meetings. They last faced off back in 2022, when the Cowboys won huge on the road in Minnesota, 40-3. They’ve also met in the postseason more frequently than most, and while Dallas leads the series there too, 4-3, the Vikings have won their last two playoff meetings.

Eagles-Raiders snap counts: Brandon Graham got 2 sacks without even playing much

gettyimages-2251893418.jpg

The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 15 win over the Las Vegas Raiders are in! Let’s take a look and run through some analysis.

OFFENSE

Screenshot-2025-12-15-at-3.18.35%E2%80%AFAM.png

  • Entering Week 15, Jordan Mailata was the only Eagles player to have played 100% of the team’s offensive snaps this season. He finally got some rest within a game this year with Matt Pryor taking over at left tackle in the fourth quarter.
  • Fred Johnson and Tyler Steen were the only offensive starters to play the entire game.
  • Dallas Goedert led all pass-catchers in playing time, targets (7), receptions (6), yards (70), and touchdowns (2).
  • A.J. Brown only played one fewer snap than Goedert but saw just two targets. Three if you count the defensive pass interference penalty he drew on the Eagles’ first drive.
  • Grant Calcaterra was utilized on too many non-garbage time snaps.
  • Jahan Dotson did not log a target for the third time in 14 games this season.
  • DeVonta Smith saw two targets.
  • Tank Bigsby logged a season-high 17 carries for 57 yards (3.4 average). He was just shy of scoring his first touchdown of 2025.
  • Darius Cooper set a new career-high in receiving yards with 29 in this game. He also drew a pass interference penalty to set up a goal-to-go sequence.
  • Cameron Latu continues to line up at fullback.
  • Brett Toth replaced Landon Dickerson at left guard in garbage time.
  • Drew Kendall replaced Cam Jurgens at center in garbage time.
  • Tanner McKee replaced Jalen Hurts at quarterback in garbage time.
  • Will Shipley only managed to get four snaps and zero offensive touches despite garbage time opportunities being available. The Eagles chose to ride Bigsby hard instead.
  • Britain Covey logged his first offensive snaps of the season in garbage time. Covey last played on offense in Week 13 of the 2024 season.

DEFENSE

Screenshot-2025-12-15-at-3.34.40%E2%80%AFAM.png
Screenshot-2025-12-15-at-3.34.59%E2%80%AFAM.png

  • The most snaps played by any Eagles defender was 39. Vic Fangio’s defense got some much-needed rest after being relied on to play a ton of snaps in recent weeks.
  • Cooper DeJean and Zack Baun are still tied for the lead in snaps played by Eagles defenders this season.
  • Marcus Epps continues to start over Sydney Brown at safety.
  • Moro Ojomo continues to be the Eagles’ top defensive tackle in Jalen Carter’s absence. Ojomo notched one sack, putting him up to five on the season.
  • Nakobe Dean once again played a little less than Baun, with rookie Jihaad Campbell coming in to take some snaps.
  • Jaelan Phillips logged zero tackles but he had two pass deflections (one for a fourth down stop) and two quarterback hits.
  • Nolan Smith is up to three sacks in his six games since returning from injured reserve.
  • Brandon Graham only needed SEVEN snaps to log two sacks! He also logged a TFL in that short span. Talk about efficiency. BG’s still got it. The Eagles gave him the wily veteran a game ball for this performance.
  • Ty Robinson continues to play sparingly as DT5 with Carter out.
  • Andre’ Sam played the first regular season defensive snaps of his NFL career in this game.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Screenshot-2025-12-15-at-3.49.58%E2%80%AFAM.png

  • Jake Elliott continues to be perfect on all kicks with Charley Hughlett as his long snapper. And the Eagles continue to be undefeated with Hughlett on the active roster. The Cal Adomitis curse is over.
  • For the second time this season, Braden Mann only had to punt once.

DID NOT PLAY

INACTIVE: Lane Johnson, Jalen Carter, Joshua Uche, A.J. Dillon, Mac McWilliams, Sam Howell

  • Johnson is reportedly expected to return to practice this week. If he doesn’t play in Week 16, he could be back on the field in Week 17.
  • Carter’s timeline to return is unclear. No need to rush him back at the moment.
  • Weekly question: why is Dillon on the roster?

Monday Night Football: Dolphins vs. Steelers

gettyimages-2186998524.jpg

The final game of Week 15 will be a Monday Night Football matchup featuring the Miami Dolphins (6-7) on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6).

The Steelers barely lead the all-time regular season series between these teams, 13-12, and the Dolphins have won three of their four most recent meetings. They last faced off back in 2022 when the Dolphins won in Miami, 16-10. Pittsburgh will certainly have the advantage this time, though, with weather expected to be a big factor.

The polar vortex is in full swing and at kick-0ff, it’s expected to be 18 degrees with an 8mph wind, and a real feel temperature of 8 degrees. Things could get very interesting.

Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s game.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 16 Edition

imagn-27816541.jpg

With Week 15 of the 2025 NFL season is in the books, it’s time for an incredibly meaningful and serious exercise: NFL Power Rankings! What differentiates these rankings from all the others is that they’re THE only truly accurate ones in the entire universe. Hard to believe, I know. Let’s take a look at how all 32 teams stack up.

BLG’S NFL WEEK 16 POWER RANKINGS

1 – Los Angeles Rams (Last Week: 1) – The Rams keep rolling. They can cement their status as the NFL’s top team by sweeping the season series with Seattle on Thursday night.

2 – Seattle Seahawks (LW: 2) – It took a 56-yard field goal with under a minute remaining to narrowly beat the Philip Rivers-led Colts at home. The defense is good but the offense is in question.

3 – Denver Broncos (LW: 4) – The Broncos are getting all the one-score game luck this season; they have six straight wins by eight points or fewer. Denver might ride their fortune all the way to the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoff picture.

4 – New England Patriots (LW: 3) – The Pats have shown a lot of promise this season but blowing a 21-point lead shows they might not have fully arrived just yet. It’ll be interesting to see how they respond with a road game against the Ravens in Week 16.

5 – San Francisco 49ers (LW: 6) – Must be nice to the get a four-game stretch of the Cardinals, Panthers, Browns, and Titans. And now the Colts are up next. Could very well be five wins in a row.

6 – Houston Texans (LW: 7) – Six straight wins and they get the Raiders next, so, make it seven. Houston’s in a good spot to at least be the No. 7 seed. They also have a valuable head-to-head tiebreaker over Buffalo and they could earn another one over the Chargers with a win in Week 17. Could move up to the No. 5 spot.

7 – Buffalo Bills (LW: 9) – Josh Allen, this is your year. No Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs to stop you.

8 – Green Bay Packers (LW: 5) – Losing Micah Parsons for the season is a huge deal. Just look at how the Dallas defense fell off without him.

9 – Detroit Lions (LW: 8) – The Lions are committed to the bit of alternating between wins and losses. They lost to the Rams but they’ll beat the Steelers in Week 16. Good chance Detroit makes the playoffs if they win out.

10 – Chicago Bears (LW: 10) – The Bears picked up an easy win over the Browns but now it’s three challenging games to end the season: vs. Packers, at 49ers, vs. Lions. Not impossible that Chicago loses out and misses the postseason.

11 – Jacksonville Jaguars (LW: 11) – It’s been hard to take the Jags seriously but they rank seventh in point differential and Trevor Lawrence has thrown nine touchdown passes to zero interceptions over the past three weeks. Still don’t seeing them going on a playoff run.

12 – Los Angeles Chargers (LW: 13) – Fun fact: the Bolts are the only team to not lose a division game this season. They’re 5-0 with a Week 18 matchup against the Broncos remaining. If Denver stumbles, the Chargers might seize the AFC West.

13 – Philadelphia Eagles (LW: 14) – Are the Eagles truly back on track? It’s too early to conclude as much. But dominating the Raiders was at least a step in the right direction. Now let’s see if they can build on that performance and pick up at least one more win to officially clinch the NFC East.

14 – Pittsburgh Steelers (LW: 16) – Two weeks ago, there was a lot of talk about Mike Tomlin’s uncertain future. That’ll pick up again if the Steelers falter down the stretch but they’re currently in a solid position to lock up the AFC North with a magic number of three.

15 – Baltimore Ravens (LW: 17) – Even if the Ravens go 2-0 and the Steelers go 0-2 over the next two weeks, Baltimore must beat Pittsburgh in Week 18 to win the AFC North. The pressure is on Lamar Jackson to come up big down the stretch.

16 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (LW: 15) – Losing at home to the Falcons is pretty unserious. The Bucs might win the NFC South anyway despite going 1-5 in their last six games.

17 – Minnesota Vikings (LW: 22) – The Vikings were eliminated from playoff contention prior to their Week 15 game but they fought hard to beat the Cowboys anyway. J.J. McCarthy has played his best two games of the season over the past two weeks.

18 – Dallas Cowboys (LW: 12) – The Cowboys’ red hot streak is over after two straight losses. Their path to winning the NFC East is now limited to the Eagles going 0-3 and Dallas going 3-0 down the stretch.

19 – Carolina Panthers (LW: 18) – With the Bucs losing on Thursday night, the Panthers had a golden opportunity to take the NFC South lead with a win over the Saints. Instead, they lost. Now the Panthers play the Bucs twice within the last three weeks with the Seahawks sandwiched between those games. The winner of this division is probably just going to get crushed by the No. 5 seed (likely the Seahawks or Rams) anyway.

20 – Miami Dolphins (LW: 19) – Needing a win to keep their season alive, the Dolphins no-showed in Pittsburgh.

21 – Indianapolis Colts (LW: 21) – To their credit, the Colts showed good fight and nearly stole a win in Seattle. But they didn’t pull it off and have now lost four straight. Looking like they won’t make the playoffs despite their 8-2 start.

22 – Kansas City Chiefs (LW: 20) – Clearly just not their year.

23 – Atlanta Falcons (LW: 26) – Interested to see how they handle their quarterback situation after this season. Seems like Kirk Cousins might still be able to play. Do they reinstall him as the starter or just try to ride with Michael Penix Jr.?

24 – New Orleans Saints (LW: 27) – Tyler Shough hasn’t been so good that the Saints should avoid drafting another quarterback. But he’s making a case to be in the mix for the starting job next year.

25 – Cincinnati Bengals (LW: 23) – Joe Burrow seems pretty disillusioned with his situation in Cincy. Bengals fans should be nervous about that.

26 – Cleveland Browns (LW: 24) – Shedeur Sanders sure looked like a rookie in the Browns’ blowout loss to the Bears.

27 – New York Jets (LW: 25) – The Jets would be wise to lose out. They really need a quarterback.

28 – Washington Commanders (LW: 29) – The Commanders made a lot of dumb decisions last offseason but now they’re making a smart decision to shut down Jayden Daniels. Washington will still be looking to play spoiler to Philly with two of three remaining games against the Eagles.

29 – Arizona Cardinals (LW: 28) – Jonathan Gannon is 1-11 in his last 12 games. He is 15-33 as the Cards’ head coach.

30 – New York Giants (LW: 30) – The Giants can make this bad season worth it by getting the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They must lose their Week 17 game against the Raiders. Otherwise, that could be the difference.

31 – Tennessee Titans (LW: 31) – One thing you can say about the 2025 Titans is that they’re bad.

32 – Las Vegas Raiders (LW: 32) – The Raiders are listless. Outside of Maxx Crosby, the players look ready for the season to be over.

More than 30 former Eagles already eliminated from playoff contention

gettyimages-2242232100.jpg

With only a few games left in the 2025 NFL regular season, 12 teams have already been eliminated from the playoffs, many of which include former Eagles.

The Eagles need to win just one of their next three games to win the NFC East and secure their spot in the postseason. They’ll likely be the only team advancing from the division — the Giants and Commanders have already been eliminated and the Cowboys have <1% chance to extend their season.

Here are the teams and Philly alumni whose season will end after Week 18:

Atlanta Falcons — Kentavius Street

Arizona Cardinals — PJ Mustipher, Josh Sweat

Cincinnati Bengals — Oren Burks, Joe Flacco

Cleveland Browns — DeAndre Carter [IR]

Kansas City Chiefs — Gardner Minshew, Janarius Robinson [IR], James Winchester

Las Vegas Raiders — Thomas Booker, Terrell Edmunds [PS], Tristin McCollum, Raheem Mostert, Albert Okwuegbunam [PS], Kenny Pickett, Devin White,

Miami Dolphins — Quinton Bell, Rasul Douglas

Minnesota Vikings — Javon Hargrave, Isaiah Rodgers, Carson Wentz [IR], Eric Wilson

New Orleans Saints — Jack Stoll

New York Giants — Cameron Johnston

Tennessee Titans

Washington Commanders — River Cracraft [PS], Zach Ertz [IR], Tyree Jackson [IR], Marcus Mariota, Jeremy Reaves

Other news

There are three teams eyeing postseason games with a considerable number of former Eagles on their roster, including the Chicago Bears [Ryan Bates, Kevin Byard, T.J. Edwards, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, D’Andre Swift, Olamide Zaccheaus] who are expected to win the NFC North, the New England Patriots [Christian Elliss, Mack Hollins, Milton Williams] who are currently No. 1 in the AFC East, and the Pittsburgh Steelers [Jack Driscoll (PS), Kenneth Gainwell, Lew Nichols (PS), Isaac Seumalo] who have taken the lead atop the AFC North.

And, speaking of the Steelers, Aaron Rodgers spoke about Kenny Gainwell at length after their Monday night win over the Dolphins, and was effusive in his appreciation for the running back.

💚 Aaron Rodgers has loved Kenny Gainwell since he was on the Eagles & shocked Steelers signed him for next to nothing

“I love playing with him. He’s as smart as they come. I still can not believe what we got him for. I told him a long time ago my goal was to get him paid” pic.twitter.com/YchK3vwFvl

Eagles News: Vic Fangio appreciation

imagn-27814620.jpg

Eagles Question of the Day: Who is your Eagles MVP on defense this season and why is it them? Head over to The Feed and weigh in with your explanation!

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …

‘A master at work’ — What makes Vic Fangio truly unique – NBCSP
Vic Fangio has been coaching football for 47 years, and he’s been coaching in the NFL for 40. After all those years – nearly a half century teaching and coaching defense – you might think he’d be stubbornly set in his ways, inflexible and unwilling to waver or compromise, like a lot of older coaches in a lot of sports. Not Vic. One of the reasons Fangio has enjoyed sustained success is because he’s exactly the opposite. “He stays relevant because he’s good at his job (and) how he’s able to adapt with the times,” Jalyx Hunt said after walkthrough Tuesday. “He has a way he likes to play defense, but he doesn’t force players to convert their playing styles. He just uses our playing styles to the benefit of the entire defense.” All the Eagles’ defense has done in nearly two years under Fangio is allow an NFL-low 18.1 points per game, an NFC-low 298 yards per game and an NFC-low 4.89 yards per play, help the Eagles win an NFL-best 23 games (tied with the Lions and Bills) and win a Super Bowl. After a modest start this year, the Eagles’ defense has been phenomenal lately. In six games since the bye week, the Eagles are allowing just 14.3 points per game, by far the fewest in the league.

Eagles defensive rankings since Week 10:

• 1st in opponent completion percentage (51.5%)
• 1st in fourth-down defense (14.3%)
• 2nd in opponent passer rating (67.2)
• 3rd in points allowed per game (14.3)
• 3rd in pressures (90)
• 3rd in quarterback hits (45)
• 3rd in… pic.twitter.com/Pp6eDrBU7a

Eagles-Raiders Film Review: The offense might have an identity – BGN
It’s Week 15, but do the Eagles have an offensive identity? The last two weeks feel different. I said last week, despite the turnovers, that I was optimistic about the offense. For the first time since the bye, the Eagles looked like an offense with a clear identity rather than a collection of ideas. Yes, the Raiders suck. But I still care how the Eagles play. That’s just as important as winning the game. Let’s get into it.

Eagles-Commanders preview: 5 things to watch – PhillyVoice
2) The Eagles should have opportunities against the Commanders’ pass defense as well. Let’s first continue on with the Commanders’ linebackers, who haven’t covered well this season. Luvu’s coverage numbers are hilarious. Per PFF, he has allowed 34 receptions on 36 targets (94.4%!) for 294 yards and 4 TDs. Again, attack that fraud. Wagner has allowed 35 receptions on 45 targets (77.8%) for 475 yards and 3 TDs, though he does have 2 INTs. The Commanders have allowed 73 receptions for 905 yards and 9 TDs to opposing TEs this season. The 905 yards are sixth-worst. The 9 TDs are third-worst. This could be a Dallas Goedert game. But also, the Commanders cornerbacks are banged up, as Marshon Lattimore and second-round rookie Trey Amos are both on IR. Amos started 8 games this season. 32 tackles, 6 PBUs, 0 INTs. He was up and down this season. Too many missed tackles. He suffered a fractured fibula in November and his season is over. Lattimore looked cooked when he was healthy this season, committing 9 penalties in 9 games. He tore an ACL in November and his season is over.

Keep Tweaking – Iggles Blitz
Again, this isn’t anything groundbreaking. The coaches just needed to mix things up and use some different routes and route combinations. It is frustrating that it took this long to get things adjusted, but it is a good sign that they are making changes. These tweaks will give the defense more to look at and think about. It will give Jalen Hurts different looks and options. The goal is to be able to get the ball to the playmakers more easily. Let AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert make plays for you. Get them the ball. The run game was still a mess for part of the Raiders game, but did get going late. Maybe that was the Vegas defense wearing down. Maybe the Eagles offense finally got into a good rhythm with the running game. We’ll see how things go on Saturday in Washington. The increased running by Hurts certainly helped. If teams have to account for him, it opens up things for Saquon and the other backs.

Jalen Hurts on blocking out the criticism: ‘This isn’t my first rodeo’ – Inquirer
How was he able to drown out the scrutiny? “It’s who I am,” Hurts said. “It’s my focus. This isn’t my first rodeo, you know? So very unprecedented journey to be here. But unprecedented is unprecedented.”
Hurts has been here before. He often points to his benching at Alabama as one of the pivotal moments of his football career, one that taught him lessons of perseverance and determination. He responded emphatically to that low point, leading Alabama to victory in the SEC title game the following season and finishing as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy the season he transferred to Oklahoma. Hurts was the fifth quarterback taken in the 2020 draft — and the first to win a Super Bowl.

Jalen Hurts update, playoff bid within reach, another short week: Eight Eagles Thoughts – The Athletic
In Sirianni’s postgame speech on Sunday, he told the team they had another short week. One player was surprised. He didn’t realize that the Eagles, in fact, play a Saturday game. By this point, the Eagles are used to it. This is their fifth short week of the season, as defined by fewer than six days between games. That’s the most of the Nick Sirianni era and tied for the most in the NFL since at least 2000, joining the 2020 Bills and the 2024 Ravens.

NFL Week 16 latest buzz, questions, news and fantasy tips – ESPN
Who is the most interesting offseason trade candidate? Fowler: I have several candidates, but let’s start with A.J. Brown. The weekly concerns about Brown’s messaging — from sonnets to soundbites — must be taxing on Philadelphia’s locker room, even if players understand the receiver’s frustration due to the limitations of the Eagles’ passing attack. Several executives I spoke to believe the Eagles could look to move Brown, who’s 28 and still has prime years left. He would undoubtedly have a market. He’s due $50 million in cash over the next two years, which is manageable for a WR1. The Eagles would absorb a $20 million cap hit if he’s traded before June 1, or they could save $7 million on the cap by waiting until after June 1 to deal him. Either way, the Eagles have shown cap challenges won’t deter them (see: the Carson Wentz trade). And it seems that Brown would welcome a new passing game at this point.

Bowen: Was that actual fun the Eagles were having? Maybe try and do that again – PHLY
I get it, though. For whatever reason – whether it’s Patullo, or Hurts’ reluctance to embrace certain pass concepts, or the up-and-down play of the offensive line – this attack needs Hurts to be able to go “cheat code” here and there, as he did in darting to a third-and-12 QB-draw first down Sunday. Given the talent on hand, maybe that shouldn’t be the case, but 14 games into the season, it is. The Eagles need another game like this Saturday at the 4-10 Commanders. It won’t be 31-0 – that sort of blowout doesn’t happen much within the division, and Washington is more talented than Las Vegas — but the offense can take another step forward, building confidence and rhythm toward the postseason. Oh, and, don’t anybody get hurt.

A win on Saturday would make Eagles first team to repeat as NFC East champions since 2004 – PFT
The NFC East was created in 1967. The Cowboys have the most division titles with 25, followed by the Eagles with 13, Washington with nine, Giants with eight and St. Louis Cardinals, who were realigned out of the division in 2002, with two.

9 coaches who would make the Cowboys defense better in 2026 – Blogging The Boys
Jim Schwartz. Let’s start with the whale: Jim Schwartz is currently wrecking quarterbacks’ Sundays as the Browns defensive coordinator. Getting him to Dallas would not exactly be easy. That said, the Browns are 3-11 and rumors continue to persist around head coach Kevin Stefanski’s job security. If he gets fired, Schwartz would be very available. Even if Stefanski sticks around, he may opt to shake up his staff, or Schwartz may want to jump ship for somewhere more stable. The Cowboys aren’t exactly the model of stability, but Brian Schottenheimer has earned plenty of good will by now, and Schwartz would immediately be welcomed warmly. Schwartz’s scheme would also mesh well with the current roster. He cut his teeth under Jeff Fisher and Gregg Williams, and emphasizes physicality and aggression over everything. Schwartz loves playing press man coverage and, while not blitz-happy, his Browns do currently rank 10th in blitz rate. He’s more selective with his blitzes, like Mike Zimmer last year, but uses simulated pressures to find ways to win with four. Stealing Schwartz away from the Browns would be as close to a home run as the Cowboys could get. His track record on defense is impeccable, and he was named the Assistant Coach of the Year back in 2023, his first year with the Browns. [BLG Note: It would suck if the Cowboys hired Schwartz.]

Did Adam Peters’ 2025 Roster Decisions Set the Commanders Back? – Hogs Haven
For all the hype and fanfare when Adam Peters arrived in D.C., his results have been a VERY mixed bag. With a mindset of building through the draft, Peters has liquidated the Commanders draft picks through trades, making his mission of doing so much tougher. Washington is without a second and fourth in April’s draft and Peters will need to supplement, and do so SMARTLY, in free agency, to rebuild this roster with talent and youth. Year three will be big for the 46-year-old who studied under some of the game’s best. Can Peters turn the franchise around and get Washington back into playoff contention moving forward, or did some of the past decisions set this team back another two-to-three years? Only time will tell…

Giants-Vikings odds, Week 16: New York expected to lose ninth straight – Big Blue View
The 2-12 New York Giants have lost eight straight games. Oddsmakers think that streak will reach nine against the Minnesota Vikings in NFL Week 16, with FanDuel Sportsbook establishing the Vikings as 2.5-point favorites. Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET game is at MetLife Stadium. The half-empty stadium and apathetic crowd at MetLife in last week’s loss to the Washington Commanders, being at home won’t be much of an advantage for the Giants against Minnesota.

Rams vs. Seahawks is the most important Thursday Night Football game of the year – SB Nation
It’s not often that Thursday Night Football gives us the game of the week, but here we are. The Los Angeles Rams travel to face the Seattle Seahawks, and it’s a game with huge implications not just for who could end up with the NFC West crown, but potentially the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, with home field advantage being the prize at the end. With both teams sitting at 11-3 there’s so much on the line. The winner will functionally need to botch their last two games of the season not to end up with the top seed, while the loser will be on the road in the opening round of the playoffs. Let’s dive into the scenarios for this big game.

Eagles Injury Report: Saquon Barkley upgraded to full participation

gettyimages-2196101822.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles issued their second official injury report in advance of their Week 16 road game against the Washington Commanders.

Note that this report is an estimation because the team held a walkthrough in lieu of a normal practice.

The Eagles listed four players under DID NOT PARTICIPATE: Landon Dickerson, Jalen Carter, Lane Johnson, and Fred Johnson.

Dickerson has a “rest” description next to his calf injury so one would think he’s going to follow the pattern of recent weeks and still start at left guard.

Carter is on track to his miss his third straight start.

Lane Johnson is on track to miss his fifth straight start.

Fred Johnson was listed under DNP for the second day in a row but he told Jeff McLane that he plans on being able to play against Washington.

The Eagles listed one player under LIMITED PARTICIPATION: Cameron Latu.

Latu was upgraded to limited after being listed under DNP on Tuesday. Seems like he might be able to play this weekend. If not, he could be back in Week 17.

The Eagles listed five players under FULL PARTICIPATION: Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Zack Baun, Jaelan Phillips, and Cameron Williams.

Barkley was upgraded from DNP on Tuesday to full go on Wednesday. He’ll be ready to play.

Bigsby was upgraded from limited to full. His illness was never likely to cost him playing time.

Baun, Phillips, and Williams were full go for the second day in a row. The Eagles don’t seem to be in a rush to activate Williams from injured reserve.

Jalen Hurts is not listed on the injury report despite the brief scare at the end of the third quarter during the Eagles’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

He didn’t appear to be hampered at all during the media-attended portion of Tuesday’s practice.

Same seasons, different decades

gettyimages-2251657126.jpg

A Philadelphia team that came into the season as recent Super Bowl winners but can’t get into gear. A Washington team with a double digit loss season a year after landing a franchise QB.

What decade is this?

John Stolnis is correct, this isn’t 2023 all over again. If this season is a repeat, it’s a repeat of 2018. Consider:

  • In their first 13 games, the 2018 Eagles were outgained by their opponents, an average of 31.3 yards per game. For the rest of the season, including playoffs, the 2018 Eagles would outgain their opponents, though the bulk of that yardage differential, 271 yards, came in a shutout win over Washington. In their first 13 games, the 2025 Eagles were outgained by their opponents, an average of 34.9 yards per game. They just had a 312 yardage differential in a shutout win over Las Vegas.
  • The 2018 Eagles, having lost their offensive coordinator (though one who did not call plays) late in the cycle, promoted from within and got it wrong, and finished 18th in points per game. The 2025 Eagles, having lost their offensive coordinator (who did call plays) late in the cycle, promoted from within and are currently 18th in points per game.

Or maybe it’s 2019.

  • Out of their Week 10 bye the 2019 offense, which was already disappointing in the first half of the season, the team scored a measly 10 points, and followed that up with a 9 point performance, and a three game losing streak from the end of November to the beginning of December. The 2025 Eagles followed their Week 9 bye with a 10 point performance, and followed that up with an equally uninspiring 16 point game. They too had a three game losing streak from the end of November to the beginning of December.
  • The 2019 team ended the season on a 4 game win streak, starting with a win over the 4-12 Giants, who they would play and beat twice and would fire their coach, a 3-13 Washington team, and the 8-8 Cowboys. They then lost to the Seahawks in the first round. The 2025 Eagles just pounded the Raiders, who will probably fire their coach. They too play a bad divisional opponent twice in Washington. In the first round the Eagles will likely play the 3rd place NFC West team, which, looking at remaining schedules, very well could be… the Seahawks.

Meanwhile Washington is running back their own version of the 2010s.

  • In 2012 they drafted Heisman winner Robert Griffin III 2nd overall, and won double digit games–and the division–in his rookie year, and did it without a lot of help for the QB other than RB Alfred Morris. The team’s leading receiver had just 633 yards, the defense was 22nd in points per game. But they found their QB, who won Rookie of the Year, the franchise had turned around in an instant. Including the playoffs, Washington went 7-1 to end the season.
  • In 2024 Washington drafted Heisman winner Jayden Daniels 2nd overall, and won double digit games–not enough to win the division but enough to win three other divisions had they been in them–in his rookie year, and did it without a lot of help for the QB other than WR Terry McLaurin. The team’s leading rusher that wasn’t Jayden Daniels had just 799 yards. But they found their QB, who won Rookie of the Year, the franchise had turned around in an instant. Including the playoffs, Washington went 7-1 to end the season.

Both teams followed it up with miserable seasons. The 2013 team went 3-13, including an eight game losing streak. The 2025 team is sitting at 4-10, having already completed their own eight game losing streak. And in both seasons, the franchise QB didn’t play like one.

When running the ball is an integral part of a QB’s game and they aren’t as effective running the ball, their passing efficiency suffers. We see it pretty much every year around the league, and this year it’s happening to Jalen Hurts.

We’ve also seen these seasons before from both teams. And with another matchup in two weeks, we’ll be getting re-gifted twice this holiday season. Bah humbug.

Thursday Night Football: Rams vs. Seahawks

gettyimages-2247047653.jpg

Week 16 of the 2025 NFL season will feature a matchup between the Los Angeles Rams (11-3) on the road against the Seattle Seahawks (11-3) for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

The Seahawks lead the all-time regular season series between these west coast teams, 28-26, but the Rams have won four of their five most-recent meetings. They last faced off in just over a month ago, when the Rams won in L.A., 21-19.

The Rams faced quite a few travel hurdles, including a delayed flight that required the team finding a new plane, and head coach Sean McVay — days after welcoming his second child — had to fly separately to prevent getting the rest of team from getting sick.

Eagles opposing player to stop, Week 16 edition

gettyimages-2184888144.jpg

The Eagles should beat the depleted, sagging, disappointing Washington Commanders on Saturday, and wrap up the NFC East for the second-consecutive year, making them the first repeat winners of the NFC East Division in 21 years, since the Eagles were four-time NFC East champions from 2001-04.

That is what should happen, if the Eagles do not fall into the complacency well, beginning at the NFL-odd start time of 5 p.m. at Northwest Stadium. The Eagles are one victory away from clinching the division, while Washington sits at 4-10 and is probably one of the largest letdowns in the NFL this season, after reaching the NFC Championship last year and watching Philadelphia 76ers/Commanders’ owner Josh Harris dance on the sideline. There was no dancing this season, with Jayden Daniels on and off the disabled list, replaced by former Eagles’ backup Marcus Mariota. The 2025 Commanders hint more as last year as an outlier and this season being indicative of what the Commanders are.

Perhaps the only thing Washington has going is wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who has had his share of problems last season going up against Eagles’ cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. In 12 career games against the Eagles, McLaurin has caught 64 passes on 89 targets for 917 yards, averaging 14.33 yards a catch, and five touchdowns. This year, McLaurin has missed a career-high seven games due to a quad injury and is about the only threat the Commanders have. Tight end Zach Ertz, the former Eagle, is finished for the season with an ACL. Daniels has been shut down. There was even some debate in Washington about shutting down McLaurin, who only missed three games in his previous six years in the NFL and will turn 31 next season.

The Commanders have nothing to gain, other than players trying to produce good film to either stay in Washington or for another future team. The Eagles are playing for the consecutive NFC East titles and still need to smooth out what has been a shaky offense as the postseason looms. The Commanders just snapped what as an NFL-high nine game losing skid in Week 15 to the equally low New York Giants, giving them their victory in over two months. McLaurin figured prominently in the victory with three catches on four targets for a game-high 69 yards receiving, which included 51-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Mariota.

Eagles’ coach Nick Sirianni will be receiving some personal history after the Eagles beat the Commanders. In his five years as head coach of the Eagles, Sirianni has garnered a 57-25 record during the regular season, tied with all-time great Hall of Famer Paul Brown, who was 57-6=3 in his first five seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. A victory over Washington would put Sirianni past him on the all-time list of NFL coaches in their first five years.

Hopefully, it is an omen of good things to come for Sirianni and the offensively stunted 2025 Eagles. Brown won his first of three NFL championships in his fifth year, going 10-2 during 1950, opening that season with an emphatic 35-10 victory over the defending NFL world champion Eagles.

For Sirianni to surpass Brown, the Eagles must shut down McLaurin, if he plays. When the Eagles beat Washington, 26-18, on Nov. 14, 2024, in Week 11, Mitchell held McLaurin to one catch on two targets, though each time Mitchell covered him, Daniels left him alone, never throwing in McLaurin’s direction on 20 plays.

NFL Week 16 betting advice: Eagles-Commanders pick and prop bets

gettyimages-2195594194.jpg

Steve Maltepes, known as “The Philly Godfather,” will impart his gambling wisdom on the Eagles and where the smart money is going on various pro football games each weekend this season. Maltepes is one of the nation’s hottest sports betting experts who appears weekly on national radio, is the best-selling author of “Booked: The True Life Story of the PhillyGodfather,”and has his own website, www.thephillygodfather.com.

Philadelphia Eagles (9-5) at Washington Commanders (4-10) at 5:00 p.m. Saturday

The Line: Eagles minus-7/Total: 44.5

What is the line telling you:

This is a tricky game for the Birds after blowing out a really bad Raiders team last week. Even though Washington has one of the most injured—and weakest—defensive backfields in the NFL and has only won four games all season, this isn’t a walkover. When Marcus Mariota started, he’s shown the ability to move the ball and put points on the board. With Mariota under center, Washington scored 29 points against the Giants, took Denver to overtime and scored 26 against a Broncos team that may have the best defense in the NFL, put up 41 against Vegas, and scored 27 against a Falcons team that still ranks top 10 in many defensive metrics. Add in the fact that this is a road divisional game, and things can get weird.

Bottom line:

The Eagles should win this game—they’re the better team and hold an overall +8 health advantage. Washington also has the third-worst turnover differential in the league. That said, late-season divisional games are always wacky, and Mariota is clearly playing for a potential starting job next season. As a backup this year, he’s thrown for 1,600 yards with a 62% completion percentage. One more thing: as of right now, nearly 90% of the early public money is on Philadelphia. That should be concerning for anyone looking to invest in the Eagles tomorrow. We like Washington +7 and the over 44 here, as long as the weather stays as projected for tomorrow’s game.

Prop bets for the game:

Jalen Hurts over 210 passing yards -135

AJ Brown anytime TD +120

Dallas Goedert anytime TD +185

Marcus Mariota anytime TD +300

(Betting lines are subject to change.)
