Eagles-Browns snap counts: A shift in the QB3 battle

The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns are in. Let’s take a look.

OFFENSE

Interesting that Brett Toth played the entire game when he’s exclusively been repping as the first-team left guard during Landon Dickerson’s absence. Maybe that’s a good sign that the Eagles feel good about Dickerson starting Week 1? Or maybe they felt like Toth really needed the reps to gear up for regular season action? Toth played just 19 snaps at left guard before moving inside to center for 28 snaps.

Drew Kendall logged 19 snaps at center before moving to left guard for 28 snaps. Kendall lacks significant guard experience and this is a proper time to get him some.

Terrace Marshall’s seven special teams snaps in this game alone equal half the 14 he’s played over his four-year career. He didn’t do much with all of his offensive playing time, though he wasn’t exactly set up to succeed given the Eagles’ QB and OL struggles.

Darius Cooper played a lot on offense but only saw one target for no receptions. He was lined up as a kick returner but didn’t return any kicks.

Neither Dorian Thompson-Robinson nor Kyle McCord saw much action in the joint training camp practices. Nick Sirianni talked about wanting to rotate them in this game but McCord clearly ended up with the majority of playing time. Could be a good sign that the Eagles wanted to see more from the rookie after the veteran really struggled.

Myles Hinton played LT and Cameron Williams played RT.

Trevor Keegan exclusively played at right guard after splitting time between RG and center in the first preseason game.

Darian Kinnard played at RG.

Matt Pryor played at RT.

Kendall Lamm played at LT.

Kylen Granson and E.J. Jenkins saw near identical playing time as they’re battling for the TE3 spot. I’d give the edge to Granson.

Ainias Smith led the Eagles in receiving (lol) by catching both of his targets for 19 yards and one touchdown. He only played one special teams snap; his punt return for 10 yards.

Montrell Johnson Jr. made his Eagles debut after missing the first preseason game.

Cameron Latu hasn’t shown much of anything on offense but he did have some nice plays on special teams. He probably belongs on an NFL practice squad. Good player to temporarily elevate if some extra ST help is needed.

Interesting that Johnny Wilson only played eight snaps. Did he get hurt? Or were the Eagles preserving him?

No special teams role for AJ Dillon, who didn’t play much. But is clearly the RB3 with Will Shipley not suiting up.

The Eagles actually used Ben VanSumeren on offense! And as a kick returning option. He played the most special teams snaps of any Eagle.

Harrison Bryant barely played one day before being traded to the Houston Texans along with a draft pick swap in exchange for John Metchie III.

DEFENSE

Byron Young played a good amount in his Eagles debut.

Jakorian Bennett and Mac McWilliams were the third and fourth outside cornerbacks to enter the game, respectively. They ended up playing the same amount of snaps. The Eagles also seemed to be evaluating Bennett on special teams, where he only has 27 career snaps.

The Eagles seem to like Andre’ Sam and Smael Mondon Jr. on special teams. Not the case for Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who played a lot despite starting in this game.

Gabe Hall played a good amount despite getting banged up at one point.

Sydney Brown was in the game slightly longer than Andrew Mukuba. Mukuba obviously made the stronger case for a starting position on Saturday.

Kelee Ringo, who got the start at left cornerback, wasn’t far behind Bennett and McWilliams in playing time.

Jihaad Campbell playing fewer snaps than Trot Jr. and Mondon Jr. seems like some preservation going on, which is a good sign for his stock.

Patrick Johnson played identical snaps to Ogbo Okoronkwo but the former played seven special teams snaps while the latter played none. Advantage: Johnson.

Adoree’ Jackson played on the Browns’ first two drives. He was on the field during the TV timeout before the Browns’ first drive of the second half … but Ringo ran on to replace him.

Brandon Johnson was the starting slot in this game. The Browns really went after him.

Eli Ricks didn’t enter the game until the fourth quarter. Not good for his stock.

Antwaun Powell-Ryland is not making the roster. Practice squad.

New guy Justin Rogers didn’t play much.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Screenshot-2025-08-17-at-9.12.31%E2%80%AFPM.png

No offensive snaps for Avery Williams. His sole punt return gained 11 yards.

The Eagles’ inept offense kept Braden Mann busy with seven punts. He’s up to 11 punts in two preseason games (span of nine days). For perspective, he only punted the ball 10 times through the Eagles’ first four regular season games in 2024 (span of 23 days). Give the guy’s leg a rest!

Charley Hughlett made his Eagles debut. No obvious issues.

No defensive snaps for Tariq Castro-Fields, Maxen Hook, or A.J. Woods (who was carted off the field).

No offensive snaps for undrafted rookie Hollin Pierce. Don’t think the Eagles are hiding him as much as they don’t trust him to play on offense.

DID NOT PLAY

QB Jalen Hurts, WR Jahan Dotson, EDGE Nolan Smith, WR DeVonta Smith, WR A.J. Brown, QB Tanner McKee, LB Nakobe Dean, RB Saquon Barkley, CB Quinyon Mitchell, RB Will Shipley, S Reed Blankenship, DB Cooper DeJean, DB Lewis Cine, C Cam Jurgens, LB Zack Baun, OG Tyler Steen, OLB Jalyx Hunt, OT Lane Johnson, OT Laekin Vakalahi, OT Jordan Mailata, OG Landon Dickerson, OG Kenyon Green, TE Grant Calcaterra, WR Elijah Cooks, TE Dallas Goedert, DT Jordan Davis, DT Moro Ojomo, DT Jalen Carter

The Eagles rested most of their starters.

Non-starters who didn’t play due to injury: Cine, Green, Cooks.

Dean is still on the active/PUP list.

Vakalahi didn’t see any snaps in this one after getting some last week. We’ll see if the international exemption gets any run in the third and final preseason game against the Jets.

Eagles-Browns Film Analysis: Encouraging signs from Jihaad Campbell and Andrew Mukuba

imagn-26861787.jpg

Well, this wasn’t the most interesting Philadelphia Eagles preseason game. But there were some interesting things to look out for on defense against the Cleveland Browns, so let’s get into it!

Defense

It was great to see 1st round pick Jihaad Campbell jump off the screen straight away. He’s explosive, slippery through contact, and an excellent pass rusher from an off-ball position. Even more importantly than this sack, there was a play later on where he was lined up at off-ball linebacker before walking him down to EDGE. That flexibility is huge. Campbell picked up an early sack on Dillon Gabriel with this simulated pressure, where Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari dropped to the flats. The Eagles weren’t as vanilla on defense as last week, and they did try some interesting pressure looks in this one.

Eagles Defense All22 thread Preseason Week 2 vs. Browns. 1) It was great to see the rookie Jihaad Campbell get a chance to get after the QB. He's explosive and can get off blocks on his way to the QB. This was an interesting look with Uche/Ojulari both defending the flats and… pic.twitter.com/HId76bvsot

It felt like Azeez Ojulari needed a game like this and he delivered as a pass rusher. Finally! Based on reports, his summer’s been quiet, so this was encouraging. However, his run defense was shaky as he was inconsistent at setting the edge (he was responsible for a successful reverse later) and was too often moved off his spot.I’m not sure how much you can play him on early downs. Andrew Mukuba did well covering the tight end here, too. Sadly, Adoree’ Jackson didn’t have a great game and this rep highlighted that. He’s too passive and doesn’t seem to be moving too well either. I don’t think he’s locked up a starting position by any means. If he does start, I don’t think he will have a long leash!

2) It was good to see Ojulari (13) show up and have a promising game. I think the Edisappointinggles need him to play well this year and contribute something. It was good to see Mukuba (24) come down from a two-high look and cover the TE. Pretty disapointing rep by Adore Jackson… pic.twitter.com/yLrbR5i9ZX

On first watch, I thought this was a fire zone. After going back, it’s probably just a man blitz, but it ends up looking like a 3-deep/3-under coverage due to how it plays out. Either way, the disguise and rotation worked. Both corners did well, and Jakorian Bennett did exceptionally well to end up with a pass breakup. I worry that Bennett is a little bit grabby in coverage, but his speed is very helpful at stopping these crossing routes. This is a great play. I thought Kelee Ringo did OK overall, although he was caught in traffic on another crosser later on in the game and gave up a big catch, too. I thought Bennett was probably the best corner, but I don’t feel great about anyone right now.

3) Really nice rep of fire zone from the Eagles here after rotating from two-high to a 3-deep/3-under coverage. The Eagles do a good job of condensing space and Ringo (7) and Bennett (49) do well. I worry a little bit about how grabby Bennett is, but his speed is incredibly… pic.twitter.com/H5YYCCIffk

Ty Robinson continues to have some nice moments. Here, he plays the run perfectly. He controls the tackle’s outside shoulder, then rips inside to finish. This is perfect. Later on, he added some quick interior rushes that stood out on film, too. It feels like he is coming along nicely.

4) Speaking of encouraging reps, this was great to see from Ty Robinson. He dominates the tackle immediately and has full control of his rep. He maintains his outside gap and then immediately crashes inside to make the tackle. Really good stuff. pic.twitter.com/rSMbY9cebP

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025

This was Azeez Ojulari’s best rush of the night. He wins with hands, flattens the arc, and finishes perfectly! That’s the version of Ojulari that you hope shows up more often. He’s capable of big splash plays as a pass rusher, which has value. I really hope he has turned the corner and we see more of this.

5) The best rep of the game from Ojulari who gets off the snap well, wins with good hand placement and turns the corner effectively. I was so glad to see him flash as we haven't heard many promising reports so far. pic.twitter.com/1wx0n5T0Q7

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025

Good work on the outside here from Mac McWilliams, who quietly had some nice moments playing both left and right corner. I thought McWilliams would be a slot-only guy, but he looked very comfortable on the outside in this one. If the outside cornerbacks struggle this year, it’s not crazy to think that McWilliams may get some snaps at outside cornerback near the end of the season. It’s not impossible! Kelee Ringo explodes downhill on the in-breaker at the top of the screen, too, showing the traits that mean I can’t give up on him. He’s such an interesting talent.

6) I thought Mac McWilliams (22) had some good reps outside, too. I don't see him as an outside CB but he looked pretty comfortable. Ringo (7) looked excellent here, exploding out of his break to cover the in route. I've not given up on Ringo yet. He still has potential due to… pic.twitter.com/31DzpQKMPl

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025

I thought you saw both sides of Andrew Mukuba in this game. He gets beat here by a little push-off, and I do worry he may struggle against size/length in man coverage. I think he will struggle in man coverage at times this year.

7) Mukuba (24) had a good rep earlier coming downhill from safety, but gets beat here. There's a little push off from the receiver, but I think it's a fair route. I think Mukuba may struggle against physical and long receivers/tight ends in man coverage at times, just due to his… pic.twitter.com/78mY1u7pXv

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025

But then Mukuba made the play of the night. He reads the crosser, trusts his corner outside to carry the vertical route, and jumps it for six. It’s not hard to see why he’s pushing Sydney Brown for the starting safety. I expect Mukuba to be a bit up-and-down in his rookie season, but I’m cautiously optimistic he will play well due to plays like this. I think he reads the game really well in zone coverage.

8) However, he made up for it with this one! Mukuba had 5 interceptions his final year of college and he's got a great knack for making big plays. He does a great job leaving the deep route to the outside CB and getting his eyes on the crossing route. I thought Mukuba was… pic.twitter.com/MYStDV12Fl

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025

I thought the linebacker room bounced back after some shaky play last week. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. continues to be a reliable presence who is always in the right spot. Smael Mondon Jr. was a lot better as well, making back-to-back tackles on this drive and looking more comfortable than he did last week. He was a lot better compared to the Bengals game. He trusted his eyes more, was more decisive, and tackled a lot better. He obviously still has some issues to clean up, but it’s good to see some improvement from the rookie.

9) I said the same last week, but I struggle to watch Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (54) and not come away impressed. He's got such good instincts and feels ultra reliable. It was good to see Ringo get off his block and help out in the flat, too. One thing that made the Eagles' defense… pic.twitter.com/Nr2jvxMK8a

— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) August 18, 2025
10) Let's end with Smael Mondon (42), who really struggled last week but had a better showing this week. He wasn't perfect by any means, but it was good to see a more positive performance. He does well to get through the linemen and blow up the screen pass. pic.twitter.com/kkvXrzpLxY
