Hailee Steinfeld jabs at Dolphins, other Bills rivals with one-liner

While Hailee Steinfeld hasn’t generated the amount of attention as Travis Kelce’s significant other, the actress has been a mainstay at NFL games in recent years to watch her fiancé Josh Allen.

In an interview with WhoWhatWear, Steinfeld’s football knowledge was put to the test and she took the opportunity to put the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets on blast. When asked what teams are in the AFC East, she quipped, “You got the Buffalo Bills and the Bills’ three sons.”

Historically, the opposite is true. The Bills are the only team in the division without a Super Bowl win, and their all-time .490 win percentage is way behind the Dolphins’ .553 and Patriots’ .550.

But it’s hard to argue about the Bills’ recent dominance in the AFC East. Buffalo has recorded six straight seasons with double-digit wins and won the division title in each of the last five years. In 2024, they won it by five games — the largest margin of any division winner.

Steinfeld, who has starred in movies like True Grit, Bumblebee, and The Edge of Seventeen, got engaged to Allen in November.

Patrick Paul: 'All I’m focused on' is preparing to be a starter

Neither Terron Armstead nor the Miami Dolphins have announced if the 33-year-old offensive tackle intends to play for the team in 2025 or not. But for Patrick Paul, that decision doesn’t change anything.

“I’m working toward being a starter, and that’s all I’m focused on, is being the best version of myself this year,” Paul told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on Saturday.

Paul, 23, was a second round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but started his rookie year as the Dolphins’ fourth option at offensive tackle behind Armstead, Austin Jackson, and Kendall Lamm. All three of those veterans dealt with injuries, though, so Paul was called upon to play significant snaps in seven games and start three.

Now he’s prepping for the real possibility that he’ll take over as a starter opposite Jackson. That starts with trimming down after Paul played the 2024 season at over 330 pounds.

I’ve been working on things that I saw weaknesses in during the draft process that was last year, and just fine-tuning myself,” Paul told the Sun-Sentinel. “Lost a lot of weight, double-digit pounds since the season’s been over. Been on a good diet, just learning from the older guys how to do the offseason properly, how to take care of your body. That’s what we’re doing.”

While Armstead has been a good player for the Dolphins in his time on the field, injuries have been a constant throughout his career. The veteran missed two games in 2024 and sat out for stretches in another five. If he returns to Miami in 2025, Armstead would be due to count $22.8 million against the team’s salary cap.

The Dolphins could get $15 million of that cap space back by cutting Armstead with a post-June 1 designation. Restructuring or extending his contract could also save a significant chunk.

One way or another, Miami will have a decision to make if Armstead doesn’t retire. How ready the Dolphins think Paul is for the starting role could play a significant factor in that choice.

Dolphins claim former Ravens, Seahawks CB off waivers

The Miami Dolphins claimed cornerback Ryan “Bump” Cooper Jr. off waivers, the team announced Monday.

Cooper, 23, began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent last spring. While he appeared in one game as a practice squad elevation, Baltimore cut ties with Cooper in November.

The Seattle Seahawks scooped up Cooper later that month, and he spent the remainder of the year on the team’s practice squad. After the season, the Seahawks re-signed Cooper to a futures contract, but the team waived the cornerback on Friday.

Miami is thin at the cornerback position after parting with starter Kendall Fuller earlier this month to save salary cap space. While the Dolphins have seven-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey on one side of the field, there’s not much else at the position. Former second-round pick Cam Smith, 2024 undrafted find Storm Duck, and pending restricted free agent Kader Kohou round out the depth chart.

Dolphins operating as if Terron Armstead won't return in 2025

The Miami Dolphins still don’t know if Terron Armstead intends on playing in 2025, but they’re not counting on it.

“He’s not totally ready to make that decision,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Tuesday at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. “As a result, I think we have to operate as though he won’t play – just because you have to prepare for things that you can’t control. But I think he’s going to take his time with his family and loved ones and make that decision because it is not an easy one. But we will be operating as though we are moving on in that way, simply for the execution of free agency and the draft.”

Armstead, 33, sounded like he was leaning toward a return when he spoke to reporters on radio row before Super Bowl LIX. But the five-time Pro Bowler’s retirement wouldn’t necessarily be bad news for the Dolphins.

If the oft-injured offensive tackle hangs up his cleats, it would clear $15 million in space for the salary cap-crunched Dolphins.

Miami drafted Armstead’s eventual replacement when they took Patrick Paul in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, and Paul is itching for the opportunity to take the reins.

During his time on the field, Armstead has still been a very reliable player. He earned the team’s highest grade from PFF in 2024, but missed two games and sat out for stretches in another five games. In 12 seasons in the NFL, Armstead has never played in more than 15 games in a year.

Terron Armstead to take 'minimum' contract while he mulls future

The Miami Dolphins still don’t know if Terron Armstead plans to return in 2025, but they’re set to get a salary cap reprieve while they wait for his decision.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Armstead “plans to take his contract down to minimum” while he decides his future. The move is expected to clear $13.745 million in salary cap savings for the Dolphins, a huge help for a team that entered the 2025 offseason without much room to spare.

Armstead, 33, was previously due to count $22.8 million against the Dolphins’ salary cap in 2025, fourth most on the team behind only Tua Tagovailoa, Bradley Chubb, and Tyreek Hill.

The Dolphins have several avenues to clear more space, including contract extensions for players like Jaelan Phillips and Zach Sieler that would lower their cap number in 2025. But Armstead’s slashed salary is a huge help as the Dolphins head into free agency with tons of needs to address, including a deficient offensive line and no starting safeties.

Last year, Miami picked Patrick Paul in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft with the hope that he’d eventually take over for Armstead at left tackle. Regardless if that happens in 2025 or at a later date, the Dolphins salary cap situation is already looking much more manageable.

Can the Dolphins pass up on Michigan cornerback Will Johnson at No. 13?

Fresno State v Michigan

Photo by Aaron J. Thornton/Getty Images

Miami has needs at safety and offensive line, but Johnson’s playmaking ability could be too good to pass up in the first round.

The Miami Dolphins have drafted just one first-round cornerback since 2009 (Vontae Davis), but with the 2025 NFL Draft approaching, they may have a chance to change that.

The Dolphins will need a new starting safety duo, and the offensive line is a glaring weakness, but can they pass up adding Michigan cornerback Will Johnson if he’s still on the board at pick No. 13?

Johnson, 21, is always around the football. He was named the 2023 National Championship defensive MVP after intercepting Michael Penix Jr. five seconds into the second half. He has intercepted nine passes over his three-year college career, returning two of the last three for touchdowns.

Once projected as a top-five draft pick, Johnson played just six games last year due to a shoulder contusion and turf toe. Still, he was named second-team All-American after finishing the year with 14 tackles, three pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Miami released Kendall Fuller earlier in the offseason, opening up a starting cornerback spot across from Jalen Ramsey. With the Dolphins expected to pursue offensive linemen in free agency and quality safeties available in the second wave, Johnson could be a day-one starter for a defense that averaged less than one takeaway per game last season.

While Johnson comes with injury risks, he played 26 games over two seasons with the Wolverines before last season’s struggles. Ramsey is entering his 11th season, and the Dolphins must get younger on defense. If Johnson falls to 13, the chance of selecting a day-one starter — with the ceiling of a defensive cornerstone — needs to be considered before going in a different direction.

Johnson to miss Pro Day but plans private workout

Johnson recently suffered a hamstring injury that will prevent him from participating in Michigan’s Pro Day on March 21. ESPN’s Jordan Reid reported that the hamstring injury isn’t serious and that Johnson will have a private workout on April 14.

Johnson reportedly met with the Dolphins at the NFL Combine and has floated between picks 9 and 15 in recent mock drafts. Once projected as a top-five pick, Johnson’s stock remains fluid, with over a month left before the draft kicks off in Green Bay on April 24.

Your take on the NFL Combines influence over teams draft picks

81953112.0.jpg

1998 Miami Dolphins first round pick John Avery | Set Number: X57011 TK4 R6 F4

Last week, since we were right in the middle of the annual NFL combine, I asked the following question:

Do you believe that teams rely too much on the combine results for players when determining their draft boards and, ultimately, the actual picks they make, compared to what they observed from the player on the field?

Below are some of our thoughts and answers on the question-

Dolphster believes teams often lean too much on things like 40 times at the combine.

I think sometimes teams do put too much emphasis on combine results, especially the 40. Of course speed is important, but there are plenty of sprinters who can’t physically separate from DBs when they are bumped at the LOS, etc. The immeasurables are just as important. Football IQ, heart, drive, commitment, etc. One of the reasons I loved Zach Thomas so much. Too short, too slow, but a Hall of Famer.

SlayerNation1 says the NFL's annual beauty pageant is more important for the time spent between GMs and players' agents.

More aptly named: The NFL Pagent

I believe each team’s legation gets more accomplished at the bars and restaurants than The Pagent. Agents selling their Free Agent clients is what the event is all about.Put full pads on the invitees and it will be worthwhile.

Yarganaught, I agree; thus, “rely too much on.”

I don’t think that teams rely solely on Combine results, because you see players drafted over others fairly often. I think they may look at groupings of players at certain positions of interest, like “these 3 men all have similar results at Safety” and then use internal metrics like “went to a SEC school” or “played in a similar Defense” when deciding.

StanleyDoyle1 makes a strong point by mentioning the Dolphins' 1998 first-round pick, who lasted less than two seasons before being traded for a wide receiver who was an even worse player (Marcus Nash).

John Avery says no, the combine is a perfect measure. A Jimmy Johnson special.

Dolfanjoe makes a solid point. Personal interviews are probably part of the combination that has the most value.

How to gauge levels of immaturity. Can he even read a play, for that matter can he read ? Can he run ? Can he deal with questions and deal with people ? Getting to talk to his teammates and see what they think of him as a person. Yes underwear Olympics are deceiving. As anyone who has had to throw on pads and a helmet knows. But if you are really interested in a player, that is why you have years of film also to see what he looks like in game situation. Great time for coaches and GMs to talk trades and gauge interest in possible draft scenarios ! Now when you have just spent 4 - 5 years busting your but and you were not invited to the Underwear Olympics, you have to be a little pissed !

Thomas23059 pretty much agrees with Dolfanjoe.

I think the meetings at the combine are useful for the teams. As for the rest of it, I am constantly amazed that teams can look at what someone does over a weekend and somehow think they were wrong about what the guy has put on tape for four years.

Francesco ITA is on board with the previous two.

Its good to measure some of the character of a player... is he smart ? do we think he will make the necessary sacrifices to excel ? is he confident or over-confident ?

For example i dont like when QBs dont throw at the combine, to me is a lack of competition spirit, but we have also cases of great QBs who didnt do it ...

Well, if there’s a consensus, the actual value of the combine isn’t the workouts or the 40 times but rather the personal interviews that teams can conduct with players. This is likely accurate, as some players have failed in the NFL due to their inability to perform at that level, others because they were complete headcases or simply unable to follow the law, and others just unable to take coaching. Thank you, as always, to each of you who responds to our question of the day.

NFL Free Agency: 3 positions the Miami Dolphins must target when legal tampering opens

Kansas City Chiefs v San Francisco 49ers

Photo by Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images

The Dolphins must strike the right balance between urgency and smart spending.

After restructuring the contracts of Terron Armstead and Bradley Chubb, the Miami Dolphins created some flexibility and are expected to enter free agency with roughly $25 million in cap space.

While the Dolphins can restructure contracts or extend players to create even more space, they have enough room to address some of the roster’s largest needs once free agency begins. Signings become official when the new league year starts on March 12, but players can begin negotiating with franchises at noon on March 10.

Miami won’t be a big spender, but major holes need to be addressed early in free agency.

Offensive Line

Only 19 guards across the NFL have an average annual salary of over $10 million, but that number will quickly rise once free agency begins. Trey Smith, expected to be the top guard on the market, was franchise-tagged by the Kansas City Chiefs for $23 million, thinning the supply before free agency began.

Miami’s options will include projects like Teven Jenkins and Mekhi Becton, along with established vets like Kevin Zeitler and Aaron Banks. Although players hit free agency for various reasons, the open market will drive up prices — especially when every team needs help in the trenches.

We’ve learned that the market is the market, and guard is one position the Dolphins can’t afford to whiff on if they hope to return to the playoffs in 2025.

Quarterback

Miami’s plan at backup quarterback was a failure last season. The offense failed to reach 16 points in four of the six games where Tua Tagovailoa was out of the lineup. While the hope is that Tagovailoa is more available next season, the Dolphins need a solid backup plan behind a quarterback who’s played 13 or fewer games in four of his five seasons in the NFL.

“That’s a position we will always focus on,” general manager Chris Grier said on Jan. 7, “and it will be a position that we will focus on this offseason. I will tell you that every stone will be unturned.”

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Denver Broncos v Buffalo Bills

While Grier added that they were “in on a number of top-flight backup quarterbacks” last offseason, he also mentioned financial restraints and “compensatory pick stuff.” Considering how the position derailed the 2024 season, attempting to salvage a pick at the end of the third round doesn’t justify ignoring a glaring weakness.

Former Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota has already been linked to the Dolphins. Options like Zach Wilson or Cooper Rush may not sound appealing, but both have five or more games with two touchdown passes. Skylar Thompson, who started last season as the backup quarterback, has only thrown one regular-season touchdown pass across ten career appearances.

Safety

The Dolphins currently have two safeties under contract. Patrick McMorris, a 2024 sixth-round pick, played 106 snaps last season. Jordan Colbert, a 2024 undrafted free agent, spent his first season on the practice squad.

Miami’s lack of answers creates a compelling case to re-sign Jevon Holland, but his projected salary of $15 million — or more — is a bit much to stomach in a league where six safety contracts exceed that threshold annually.

The Dolphins can find a cost-effective solution if they act quickly once legal tampering begins. While a team will pay Holland to be a defensive pillar, capable starters will be available for much less. DeShon Elliot, who was stout for the Dolphins in 2023, signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $3 million annually before starting 14 games last season.

Today at 12 pm E.T, the Miami Dolphins and the rest of the NFL clubs can begin talking to free agents and negotiating contracts. It’s been pretty tight lipped around the Dolphins as they haven’t been linked to any player so far. We do know that the will need two new guards on offense and two new safeties on defense. The Dolphins made two great signing in linebacker Jordyn Brooks and tight end Jonnu Smith last year. They’ll need more moves like that to get back to the playoffs. Stay tuned, as it’s going to be a whirlwind couple of days with all the moves going on around the league.

Having signed Mike White in 2022, the Dolphins are signing Zach Wilson to a fully guaranteed one-year $6 million deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson spent last season backing up Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

Wilson, 25, has played 34 games with the Jets, throwing for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions. He has five games with at least two touchdown passes in his career. Skylar Thompson, Miami’s backup quarterback to begin last season, has thrown one touchdown in 10 regular-season appearances.

The Dolphins averaged fewer than 14 points per game without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who’s played 13 or fewer games in four of his five seasons with the franchise. While any team struggles without its starter, Miami entered the offseason with a clear need for depth behind Tagovailoa.

There’s still plenty of time to adjust the roster, but signing Wilson is a step in the right direction on the first day of free agency.

Dolphins add a QB and two OL on day 1 - The Splash Zone 3/11/25

NFL: Las Vegas Raiders at Denver Broncos

Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

The Miami Dolphins, like the rest of the NFL, began to talk to free agents yesterday. While the 31 other clubs were busy signing players the Dolphins decided to take the sit on your hands approach and made their first move six hours into the legal tampering period. Their first reported signing of the new year will be quarterback Zach Wilson, who was most recently with the Denver Broncos. Wilson has the physical tools, but hasn’t put it all together yet. Perhaps he will continue the trend of former New York Jets quarterbacks doing well in other places. We can only hope so.

But Chris Grier decided to make his biggest move later in the night by signing guard, James Daniels. He was considered one of the top guards on the market, despite tearing his Achilles last year in week 4 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Daniels is a very clear upgrade over what the Dolphins had at guard last season and let’s hope he is somewhat fully healthy when he puts the pads back on.

A short time later, Grier decided he wasn’t done on the offensive line and added Larry Borom. He will most likely server as the Dolphins new swing tackle as he has played on both sides of the offensive line. Or perhaps they’ll slide him into guard.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

What you think the Dolphins should do with Phillips

Buffalo Bills v Miami Dolphins

Last week, knowing that Jaelan Phillips is going into his final season playing on his option year, I asked the following question:

What would you like to see the Dolphins do with Phillips going forward? Do they extend before or during the season, attempt to trade him if he is healthy mid-season, wait and see how he holds up this season, and then try to re-sign him or tag him, let him walk if he is injured again, or just let him walk no matter how his upcoming season goes?

I also posted a poll asking

What would you like to see the Miami Dolphins do with Jaelan Phillips going forward?

The results-

  • 32% or 108 of you said- Wait and see how he starts the season and then try to extend him during the season if he’s healthy and playing well.
  • 24% or 89 of you said- Extend him now!
  • 24% or 88 of you said- If he stays healthy all season long, attempt to re-sign him after the season or tag him.
  • 9% or 32 of you said- If he is injured again, let him walk after the season.
  • 6% or 22 of you said- If he’s healthy at the beginning of the season, attempt to trade him before the deadline.
  • 6% or 21 of you said- Let him walk after the season and just hope for a decent comp pick in 2027.

Below are some of your answers and thoughts on the question of the day-

It seems Alley Gator is ready to let him walk after this season.

Learn from signing Tua a year too early. Don’t sign known injury problems. It’s been two years since he played a full season and was productive, and that production had a lot to do with Chubb being on the other side. Pass. Depending on compensatory picks, we could bring in a big haul of younger and cheaper players this year.

Jptapt says trade or let him walk is the way to go.

I really like him, but business is business. I would try to trade him. If you can’t, let him walk after the season. We are already paying enough for injury risks (Tua).

sdphinsfan has a well-thought-out plan, but I warn you, it requires the use of math.

Always an interesting proposition when you’re considering what to do with talented and productive players who’s only real knock is suffering injuries. Is money part of this game? At every level. Are injuries part of this game? Definitely, and for whatever reason, more so in Miami it seems.

In Phillips case, here’s a player who has shown us everything you hope you see from a 1st round pick. Heart, effort, leadership, and most importantly, productivity. There are a handful of Edge players who affect to a very visible degree how the whole front 7 performs on D. Garrett, Hutchinson, Hendrickson, Crosby, Jones...when those guys are on the field, the entire D performs to another level as opposed to when they aren’t. Phillips has that same effect and it would be more powerful if he could stay on the field.

So based on how he’s played and what he contributes, there is every reason to make every effort to re-sign him. But you can’t ignore the missed snaps due to injury. Grier will wait. He’ll say “play it out and let’s do an extension”. It’s what he does predominantly. When Phillips plays it out and kills it, we’ll hear from Grier that this player has busted his butt and deserves a chance to hit FA. Or, he’ll let Phillips play it out, Phillips will kill it, and then we’ll extend him paying him the highest amount possible, because at that point he’ll have to compete with other clubs for Phillips services. And with the cap going up by roughly 10%, an already expensive position will become more so. Outside of the RB position, it’s more expensive to sign FA’s at any position and the numbers only go up...

Most players going into a second deal are looking intently at the guaranteed money in the offer. Those going into a second deal who’ve had numerous injuries are focused almost solely on guaranteed money. So if I’m Grier, I’m making a solid offer of guaranteed money this offseason. I’d look at what the top 10 Edge guys are making guaranteed, and then I’m looking at the percentage of snaps Phillips has played vs those guys. I apply the percentage of snaps to the average dollar amount and that’s what I guarantee. Its fair for the team, its fair to the player. On top of that, I include incentives for more than average snaps played and for performance metrics. So Phillips has his guaranteed money and if he does more, he gets more. The team gets him at more responsible price, and they get a young player who has everything to gain if he goes out and performs to an even higher level. Unfortunately we don’t operate that way. We’ll let him walk, or pay him the premium a year from now.

glen55 believes he might be a bit of a bargain if we re-sign him now.

It’s not that there is no such thing as a player being injury-prone, but it’s not nearly as common as fans seem to think, and the most common explanation for one guy having several injuries is something akin to random number generation.

I’d go for it right now while his price might be down. No guts, no glory.

Bill Moody says to re-up him now but is happy it's not on him.

This is a tough one, but I voted to extend him now. Its a risk due to his injury history, but you’re not gonna get a better price by waiting. The guy clearly has the talent and work ethic, but he’s useless if he’s not on the field. Therefore, I think its best to try and lock him up for 2-4 years before his value jumps, and take the risk that he doesn’t get another major injury. I’m glad I’m not the one to have to make this decision though.

MIAMI235, I guess, is saying to let him walk because he will be signed for more than 13 million per, even with his injury history.

Not willing to keep him at anything close to his current salary, regardless.

Dolfanjoe wants the team to let him start the season and see what happens before making any decision.

Another good player who does give it his all. Injuries are part of the game and at this point no one knows if he will ever be the same ! What’s a GM on the thin red line to do ? Little money for extensions when we need to sign free agents to bolster the team. Very little choice but to let him play and see what he can do in 25. Top 5 at his position will we be able to afford him in 26 ? Trade him at the trade deadline and get great return from a contender, especially if we are not ! If we are not successful in 25 we will be starting over from management on down. And we need not worry about franchise tags and such. Like most of this team now, play it out and see the results.

Miami7 is biased and says roll the dice now. I agree, and I would like to see them give him a deal that they can dump after 2026 or 2027 if things go south.

Probably my favorite current Dolphins player, so a bit biased I spose’.

I’d be open on extending him now - while his price is ‘significantly’ lower than it would be if he’d remained healthy AND should be less than if they wait ‘into the season’ to get a deal done (if he’s doin’ his thing & killin’ it) - but they HAVE TO give themselves viable ‘outs’ along the way to protect themselves.

JP is/was on the cusp of ‘greatness’. Understandably, he is a big risk. The Dolphins decision makers of the past 30 years aren’t folks that’d end up in the “Who’s Who” of financial wizardry registrars or certainly NFL proliferation reports. (Financial or talent wise). So, in all likelyhood, whatever they do will be the wrong choice. I just enjoy this kids work ethic & ability/growth (when on the field).

SlayerNation1 says to wait until the middle of the season or after the season to decide.

See how it goes with rehab. Use head over heart for once, you can extend during or after the season.Further complicating is the very likely lame duck regime. To attract the best available GM/HC, a team would want the fewest bad contract entanglements.JP is the anti-Jevon Holland. JP would do anything to be on the field making plays. JP goes about His business quietly and is something of an anachronism by today’s standard.

Thomas23059 believes it's bad luck and not because he's injury-prone. I've thought that all along, so I would re-sign him now for a low cost. Eventually, this team will need guys who are outplaying their contracts if we want to get to where we want to get to.

The guy is running downfield, trying to make a play, and one of his teammates takes out his knee. That is bad luck, not injury prone. You don’t punish him for that. But you do make sure he is healthy first. Give him something like 2 years, $20 million fully guaranteed, with three void years to spread out the cap hit. If he shows he is back in 2025, you give him a new long term deal with the money you save by releasing Chubb.

NFL: OCT 20 Dolphins at Colts

Keeping up with everything Miami Dolphins throughout free agency.

The start of the 2025 NFL free agency period is here. The negotiating period - commonly called the “legal tampering period” - begins on Monday at 12 p.m. Eastern and continues through 3:59 p.m. on Wednesday. The new league year begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, opening the free agency signing period.

During the negotiating period, the league allows for a soft open to free agency, when teams are allowed to contact agents and begin negotiations for soon-to-be free agents. Contracts are not allowed to be executed during the two days. Still, there will be plenty of rumors and reports of players agreeing to deals, with the contract officially signed sometime after the start of the new league year.

Throughout the week - and into the next few months - we will continue to keep up with the latest Miami Dolphins news, updates, rumors, and signings right here.

Combine Meeting You Want To Become Miami Dolphins Draft Picks

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 07 SEC Championship Game

Malaki Starks S Georgia | Photo by David J. Griffin/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Last week, I posted the following question in reference to the NFL combine and the players that our Miami Dolphins had met with:

Among the players that Miami is reported to have met with, which of these prospects would you like to see the team make a concerted effort to draft at some point during the draft?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers on the PQOTD-

Yarganaught didn’t know!

Charles Grant, OT, William & Mary

I didn’t realize anyone from The Tribe was eligible to play in the NFL. I would have spent more time inside the stadium watching the games, instead of tailgating, if I had known they were playing real football.

finfanfromsiam likes the safety from Georgia and the corner from Michigan.

Starks S, Johnson CB.

Balantine has a complete draft plan.

My choice for the draft is trade down and take Zabel. He is a plug-in at guard, and a instant back-up at tackle. Also, if Paul doesn’t work, then Zabel can.

That should give us low 3rd round pick.

If Starks is available at 48, that is a no- brainer. Or, take 48 w/ 115 and trade lower to get him, if there.

Then we can address TE/WR and DL with the two third round picks.

That is my thoughts at the moment.

SlayerNation1 is also on board with the former Bulldog.

Starks, from that list.

2024 would have had the same Safety production rolling out 2 Tackling Dummies every Sunday.

Instead, they fielded 2 dummies who couldn’t tackle.

Spok507 likes Gabriel for his skill set and size, which is similar to Tua’s.

After reading up and watching some tape on Dillon Gabriel, I’d be on board taking him in the 4th. His size isn’t much different from Tua’s, and his skill set is similar meaning they wouldn’t have to adjust the offense much for him to take over when needed. He’s been a starter in various schemes his entire career and led Oregon to the Big Ten Championship by reading the field, keeping the offense moving and not making mistakes. He’s also more mobile than Tua and much more durable despite his size. He didn’t have to scramble much considering Oregon had a very good OLine, but was able to do so and extend plays when needed. I think he’d be a good fit. Depending on who they can bring in as a veteran, having someone like Gabriel to develop would be worth a late 3rd or 4th if he’s still there.

In response to Spok507, Dolphster points out Gabriel’s lack of size but believes that he could become a decent NFL backup.

I think he is only 5’11” (I could be wrong) so that concerns me some. But I think he could be a solid NFL backup which is of course even more important for Miami with Tua always being an injury concern.

Spok507 then replied to Dolphster, pointing out the similarities between Gabriel and Tau as well as a couple of differences that Gabriel has over Tua.

Tua’s only listed at 6’ (and I think that’s generous) so, like I said, he isn’t that much different than Tua. It’s his added mobility I liked. Despite being a good pocket passer and being able to read defenses quickly, he was in a few different offensive schemes and was able to adapt to them all and run them well. So his potential is intriguing. And he’s seemingly more durable — he started and played every game for Oregon last season going 13-0. He’s missed 11 games in his college career with most of those at Oklahoma when he broke his clavical in the 3rd game and was out the rest of the season. A clavical isn’t something that is a recurring injury, so I’d take that over concussions and a destroyed hip.

It was a slow night, but we still wound up with some solid responses. If you missed the initial post HERE, which player that the Miami Dolphins front office met with at the NFL Combine would you like to see added to the roster in April?

As always, thank you to everyone who stopped by to answer our Phinsider Question of the Day.

NFL Mock Draft 2025: Yahoo updates first-round projection as free agency moves begin

NFL: APR 25 2024 Draft

Photo by John Smolek/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Who did the Miami Dolphins select in the latest Yahoo! Sports 2025 NFL Mock Draft?

This has been a busy week around the NFL. The league’s negotiating period began on Monday, allowing teams to start working with expected free agents on the terms of a contract. Those contracts and any other roster moves, including trades and post-June 1 roster cuts, began to be executed when the new league year began at 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday. Players agreeing to contracts dominated the news around the league throughout the week.

However, another announcement was made, which could also have a huge impact on the league. NFL teams were awarded compensatory draft picks this week, adding 35 additional selections to the college prospect selection process. These picks were awarded to teams who lost free agents in 2024, with a formula adjudicating who received picks and which signings countered a loss as free agency progressed. Picks were awarded starting in the third round and continuing into the seventh round.

The awarding of compensatory picks finalized the draft order - at least until trades are made to shuffle them around again.

Having the initial round of free agent signings, along with a finalized draft order, tees up the continuation of the 2025 mock draft season. At Yahoo! Sports, Nate Tice and Charles McDonald released the sixth version of their first-round projection, updating their predictions that began back in October. Who do they see the Miami Dolphins selecting with the 13th pick?

Previous Yahoo! Spots Mock Draft Miami Dolphins Picks

Mock Draft 1.0: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado (2nd pick, October 2)

Mock Draft 2.0: Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon (12th pick, November 28)

Mock Draft 3.0: Jalon Walker, LB, Georgia (13th pick, December 26)

Mock Draft 4.0: Josh Simmons, OL, Ohio State (13th pick, January 12)

Mock Draft 5.0: Kelvin Banks, OL, Texas (13th pick, February 11)

Yahoo! Sports 2025 NFL Mock Draft 6.0 - Miami Dolphins pick

The picks in this version of the Yahoo! mock had McDonald making the odd picks while Tice made the even selections. University of Miami fans will enjoy McDonald’s first-overall selection, with the Tennessee Titans using the selection to add quarterback Cam Ward. The mock continued with the Cleveland Browns selecting Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter with the second pick, followed by the New York Giants using the third selection on Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. The draft order was then shaken up as the Las Vegas Raiders traded up into the fourth position, gaining the New England Patriots’ selection to pick Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The Jacksonville Jaguars rounded out the top five picks with Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham.

Jumping to the Dolphins’ 13th pick, McDonald provided the Dolphins with a presumed day-one starter at a position they have targeted early in free agency but still could use the additional move. McDonald used Miami’s selection to add Georgia safety Malaki Starks. Of the pick, he wrote:

Jevon Holland out, Starks in. Starks is a supremely talented defensive back who, at his best, can be a dominant tackler and coverage player on the back end — the exact player the Dolphins need in their secondary right now.

How would you feel about the Dolphins using the 13th pick on a safety? Is Starks the right pick for Miami? What player or position would you prefer they target if they did not select Starks?

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Your Favorite Addition Edition

NFL: DEC 29 Titans at Jaguars

Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The NFL league year kicked off yesterday at 4 PM EST, although the feeding frenzy over free agents began on Monday for the two days the media calls the “legal tampering period.” Like last year, our Miami Dolphins sat back and waited for the big-name, big-dollar players to be scooped up before jumping in and signing some of the lesser/cheaper talent left. I expect that, like last season, some of these signings will work out and pleasantly surprise us, while others will likely disappoint and not be worth even the small dollar contracts they were given. Below is the list of guys signed that are NEW to the roster (as of the writing of this post).

  • Larry Borom, guard/tackle
  • K.J. Britt, linebacker
  • James Daniels, guard
  • Ashtyn Davis, safety
  • Alexander Mattison, running back
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, safety
  • Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, wide receiver

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is: Which new additions to the roster do you believe will have the most significant positive impact on the team and why?

Please give us your answers and thoughts in the comments section below, and please do not forget to vote in our poll.

MAREK’S MOCK: Full Miami Dolphins 7-round 2025 NFL Draft mock version 4.0

NFL Scouting Combine

Who should the Miami Dolphins select in the 2025 NFL Draft?

We are back again with another mock draft ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, and this week, the powers-that-be gifted the Miami Dolphins another draft pick in the form of an additional compensatory 7th round selection. This brings Miami’s total number of draft picks in the upcoming draft to a whopping 11 selections — which means my latest mock draft is a super sized edition!

Another reason why my latest mock draft is different than the previous three is because this version is the first mock I’ve done since the NFL’s free agency period began, which means there have been some needs addressed by Chris Grier and the Dolphins’ front office since we last ran the old simulator.

As a reminder, once a week, every week until the 2025 NFL Draft, I’ll be doing a full 7-round mock, and then giving you a chance to grade my results. Each draft will look slightly different, because, let’s be honest, the Dolphins have a ton of needs and can go in a million different directions come late April when the actual NFL Draft kicks off.

This exercise will allow us to examine different pathways to success for our beloved South Florida franchise, while hopefully having some fun in the process!

So, without further adieu, let’s unwrap my latest mock draft!

ROUND 1 - Pick #13

Tyler Warren — TE — Penn State

What the experts are saying:

The ultimate “whatever, whenever” player in the 2025 draft with the size, athleticism and competitive spirit to make good on his intentions. Warren plays with swagger and “best player on the field” energy. He imprints on games with alignment versatility, allowing opportunities for play-callers to stress the defense. Despite his size, he’s quick enough to beat man coverage underneath and plays with good recognition of holes in coverage. He has the ball skills and toughness to win contested catches and withstand punishing contact. He’s very capable as a lead/move blocker but will need a little improvement at sustaining blocks when blocking in-line. Warren can access all three levels of the field but is best served short and intermediate. He possesses elite football character and plays with a confidence that can be contagious. He has a chance to become one of the best tight ends in the league. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 2 - Pick #48

Azareye’h Thomas — CB —
Florida State

What the experts are saying:

Florida State Seminoles cornerback Azareye’h Thomas is a physically gifted developmental cornerback who has the ability to become a quality starter in the NFL. Thomas has a valuable blend of length, fluidity, and physicality to play in space on the perimeter.

With quality NFL coaching, can eventually become a disruptor in coverage. Thomas played mostly in man coverage and quarters this past season at Florida State and experienced opportunities to play with eyes on the quarterback and straight man coverage. He’ll need to develop his press technique and his sense of when the ball is in the vicinity to reach his ceiling, but he offers a baseline ability for life on the outside. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 3 - Pick #98

Shemar Turner — DT —
Texas A&M

What the experts are saying:

Texas A&M Aggies defensive tackle Shemar Turner projects as a starting defensive tackle at the NFL level. Turner boasts excellent punch power and upper-body strength, illustrating some ideal reps as a lock, peek & shed point of attack defender.

There are some consistency issues that need to be ironed out, but Turner looks and feels like an eventual starter. Turner has flashed some versatility but should be generally considered a B-gap defender in the NFL. There are baseline traits present to be a dangerous pass rusher, but he’s more proficient and ready to contribute on early downs to help control the point of attack against the run. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 4 - Pick #116

Jackson Slater — OG — Sacramento State

What the experts are saying:

Slater plays with good core strength and firmness into contact. He’s well-schooled but might lack the desired foot quickness to keep defenders in front of him once he makes the jump in competition. Slater is smooth in his sets and utilizes independent hands but will have trouble recovering once he’s behind. Proving he has position flexibility at guard and center will help, but Slater appears to have a limited ceiling. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 4 - Pick #135

Jeffrey Bassa — LB — Oregon

What the experts are saying:

Oregon Ducks linebacker Jeffrey Bassa projects as a developmental starter at the NFL level. Bassa is a former safety who converted to linebacker during his freshman season with the program, leaving him with promising continued room for growth as a stack linebacker.

Bassa is a fast, fluid, and dynamic athlete who has appeal as a man or zone coverage defender. His ability to improve attacking blocks and gaps alike in the run game will determine if he reaches his potential ceiling as a pro. In the event his transition does require added time, Bassa sports a notable special teams resume and should be a viable contributor in these phases to support his 53-man roster spot. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 5 - Pick #150

Jordan Phillips — DT — Maryland

What the experts are saying:

Maryland Terrapins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips projects as an athletic starting nose tackle at the NFL level. This is a young talent who, as a redshirt sophomore, posted impressive tape as a point-of-attack defender with lateral range and the anchor ability to hold the point and protect his linebackers.

There’s enough athletic upside with Phillips to warrant consideration for a long-term role that is more diverse and impactful on passing downs, too. He has a good first step and heavy hands that can create momentum for power rushes back into the lap of the quarterback. Phillips is built squatty and low to the ground, which affords him ample natural leverage to anchor double teams. He also shows good technique in dropping a knee and eating combo blocks to clog the interior. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 5 - Pick #155

Kyle McCord — QB — Syracuse

What the experts are saying:

Pocket passer with good size who played in a high-volume, pro-passing scheme that should give him a head start as a pro. McCord was too inconsistent at Ohio State, relative to the talent around him, but he proved to be confident and productive last season at Syracuse without that same level of supporting talent. His fundamentals are usually solid and he plays with adequate poise in the face of pressure. He has enough arm to make window throws and push the ball around the field. McCord seeks to attack coverages vertically instead of operating as a “Checkdown Charlie.” While he can hit chunk throws, his decision-making and ball placement aren’t always good fits for his gunslinger mentality. His mobility inside and outside the pocket is average. McCord has good size, adequate talent and commendable resilience. He could find a home as a backup quarterback with modest upside. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #224

Devin Neal — RB — Kansas

What the experts are saying:

Kansas Jayhawks running back Devin Neal projects as a potential NFL starting running back. He has been an ascending talent with his passing game contributions to complement good vision, physicality, ball security, and competitive toughness as a primary runner.

Neal lacks ideal burst and foot speed for consistent explosive plays in the open, but his contact balance and well-built frame will create challenges for tacklers on the second level. He illustrates a savvy feel for navigating backfield pressure and contact, finding ways to slip through creases and optimize his run opportunities. Neal has been an efficient and effective short-yardage player who illustrates growing passing game appeal. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #231

Jackson Hawes — TE —
Georgia Tech

What the experts are saying:

Hawes is a thump-and-drive tight end with the technique and fire to help make a difference in the run game as both a lead/move blocker and at the point of attack. Hawes proved he could move from the Ivy League to the ACC and fit right in despite the step up in competition. There are correctable areas as a run blocker but his demeanor and size make it easier to project his move to the NFL in that area. He’s limited as a route runner and pass catcher, so a roster spot will need to be secured with a steady diet of physicality. Hawes has Day 3 value with a chance to earn NFL snaps. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #253

Barryn Sorrell — EDGE — Texas

What the experts are saying:

Texas Longhorns edge defender Barryn Sorrell projects as a successful piece of a defensive line rotation at the NFL level. He appears to have the baseline skills of an early-down defender, thanks to his active hands and good leverage to the play side, while also sporting good motor as a second-effort pass rusher.

He’s an instinctive player who processes block keys well and boasts a good reflexive shedding technique. You do wish he offered an extra gear of explosiveness to be a viable impact player, but he should be a high-floor defender who has some more room for production in a different scheme. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #256

Kai Kroeger — P — South Carolina

What the experts are saying:

South Carolina punter Kai Kroeger is aiming for an NFL opportunity after five standout seasons with the Gamecocks. Known for his strong leg and consistency, he also brings versatility with his ability to execute fake punts, having completed multiple passes for touchdowns in his career. Dolphins continue adding to roster - The Splash Zone 3/15/25

Las Vegas Raiders v Miami Dolphins

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

Over the past couple of days, the Miami Dolphins have continued to add players to their roster in the hopes they can get back to the postseason. The Dolphins brought in K.J. Britt to bolster their linebacker room and he should be a nice depth piece for the defense and special teams. The Dolphins running back room also needed a physical presence, so the team added Alexander Mattison who should be used in short yardage situations while De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright handle the bulk of the work. This last move will make all the fans sad as the team brought back Liam Eichenberg on the offensive line. As an emergency depth piece that is fine, but if he is in the starting lineup week 1, this is an utter failure.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Almost a week ago, I posted about an article on Pro Football Focus (HERE) that suggested moving Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane to wide receiver. The article by PFF explains the reasoning behind their argument and points out that Achane should be on board with this move. The chances of him securing a much larger contract with his next deal as a wide receiver compared to a running back are significantly better. I'm unsure if the team would consider designating him as a wideout instead of a running back for that very reason. After pointing out the PFF article and their argument for doing so, I posted the following question:

Do you believe that our Miami Dolphins should consider moving De’Von Achane to wide receiver or not, and why or why not?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers on the PQOTD. Please also vote in our poll.

sdphinsfan is against the idea and makes a solid argument for his opinion.

Let me see...let’s try to fill a hole that doesn’t exist, and create another one while we do it. And lets take a player who is a total mismatch for any LB or S in the pass game and put him in an area of the field where it’s an “easier” cover for CB.

It’s like having a really good hammer. It hammers great, and it’s a “good” tool when you need to pry something loose. But that’s what pry-bars are for. And if that’s what you need, that’s what you should get if that’s the task you’re addressing.

One other thing. Achane is going into year 3, which means next year is the last year of his rookie deal. At RB, assuming his current level of productivity continues, it’s probably gonna take $10M to $15M a year to re-sign him. If you move him to WR, and he’s good there, its $25M a year to re-sign him. Why would you do that to yourself?

SlayerNation1 says don’t try and reinvent the wheel.

I can’t see it as His primary role, just situationally.

Address the real issue: Achane is no more meant to be a WR than He is meant to be a featured RB.

If the Defense allows Achane to peel out as a WR against a LB, for an obvious mismatch, take advantage of it.

NFL route running is a highly refined skill, particularly for a timing based Offense. Get a lifelong WR to be a WR. Furthermore, a stable of WRs of different sizes is needed, by that meaning bigger WRs not as small ad Achane.

Also, if Achane can’t block as RB, who will He improve as a blocking WR?

Just continue to use Achane as a running/catching RB out of the backfield. No reinventing the wheel.

FinsRegard is just hoping for solid production while wondering if his dynamic game against the Denver Broncos was the absolute pinnacle of his career.

At times I enjoy him watching him run, I thought he was bigger than 5 foot 8 inches, 188.James, I am wondering did this Dolphin concept of smaller, faster players have its peak performance in the Denver home game in 23? I grow weary of what may be possible for the Dolphins in concept in 25 after watching the reality of the Eagles dominate in the recent playoffs.I hope Achane can be productive wherever he plays in 25.That is being a Dolphin fan, hoping in the offseason.

Spok507 is in agreement!

I agree with everyone who answered — don’t fix something that isn’t really broken. While Achane was one of the few bright spots in the offense last season, we just don’t need another small, fast WR. We need a bigger one who can separate and make contested catches. We also need a bigger back to make those short yardage power runs. Achane has a perfect role as a RB/WR hybrid who can catch the ball when presented with a coverage mismatch. Trying to fill a non-existent hole and create another would be counterproductive considering all the actual holes this team has. I suppose everything depends on who they chase in free agency this week and who they target in the draft next month. But right now, it doesn’t seem like switching Achane is something that should be on the radar or any kind of priority.

tvegas897 says leave him alone already!

Every time this comes up in conversation, my first reaction is, “What a dumb idea!” Leave Achane alone please. He’s a dual threat runner and receiver that will accel behind a better OL

Yarganaught would be surprised if it doesn’t happen.

Considering I started thinking they were going to move him to WR towards the end of last season, based on all the passing targets he was getting, I would be more surprised if he stayed a RB.

21Dave wants me to stop already, but I don’t see him sending me any post ideas.

Stop it Tex!! Don’t feed into this idea!!!

Luvs2drnk2.0 believes that entirely trying to convert him at this point could ruin him.

I just don’t see it happening. It’s too late in his development to make it worthwhile. People will try and use Tyreek Hill as something similar, but it’s a bad example. Hill was basically a dual threat in college who played RB/WR split evenly. He was then drafted to play WR, and was developed in the NFL as one. Achane was a primary RB in college, and was drafted and developed to be a RB in the NFL. Trying to change him into a slot WR at this point in his career would kill his career and earning potential. The reason he does well receiving now is because he’s likely going against much slower LBs who can’t keep up with him allowing him to gain more YAC. That will change drastically when he has to start going against bigger and faster (not faster than him, but faster than LBs) DBs, who will make it a point of jamming him at the LOS. At 5’9”, 188lbs, he’s going to lose a majority of those at the LOS, the same thing that happens to Hill when he doesn’t motion or play off the line. Achane’s best bet is to be the change of pace back/3rd down receiving back, getting 10-15 touches per game (runs and catches). With Wright being a bit more of the bell cow back getting 15-20 touches (mostly runs).

twinssdfan, I think, just wants a bigger WR.

Another bigger Nat Moore.

SuperG! says it would extend his NFL career and make his contracts larger.

It will extend his career if he can convert from an RB to a WR. It will also benefit his salary long term. He’s got to learn to run all the route trees, so if that’s the plan then start grooming him now.

We clearly had a consensus with this one, with almost everyone against it for various reasons. Thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our question of the day. Please join us again tomorrow evening for another Phinsider Question Of The Day.
