Four former Dolphins find new homes in the AFC West

The first wave of free agency is coming to an end with the NFL Draft quickly approaching.

We’re only three days into the 2025 NFL league year, and the free-agent pool is quickly drying up. All 32 teams are balancing the salary cap with a roster that allows them to enter the draft with an open mind and take the best player available if a premier player drops down the board.

Safety Jevon Holland, Miami’s top free agent entering the offseason, signed a three-year deal with the New York Giants. The Dolphins are reshaping the roster in hopes of returning to the playoffs, and here are four former players who’ve found new teams out west.

Da’Shawn Hand, Los Angeles Chargers

The Dolphins hope that Calais Campbell will return for another season, but re-signing Hand would’ve been a positive addition to a roster lacking depth at defensive tackle. Hand only started two games last season but played at least 50 percent of snaps in nine of 17 games.

Instead, Hand, 30, signed a one-year, $2,350,000 contract with the Chargers on Thursday, leaving Zach Sieler and Neil Farrell Jr. as the only defensive tackles on the Dolphins roster. Defensive tackle could be an early option in the draft, but that may not be enough — especially if Campbell chooses to retire after 17 seasons.

Raheem Mostert, Las Vegas Raiders

Mostert played 44 games over three seasons in Miami and was released shortly before free agency began. Last season, he averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry, rushing for two touchdowns and fumbling twice on 85 attempts.

Despite the struggles, Mostert showcased the potential of Mike McDaniel’s rushing scheme in 2023, leading the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. That said, his role in Miami was diminishing after Jaylen Wright was drafted in the fourth round in 2024.

The Dolphins and Raiders essentially traded backs with Alexander Mattison agreeing to a deal with Miami earlier this week. De’Von Achane is Miami’s best play-making running back and the franchise hopes Wright takes a step forward in 2025. The franchise will ideally add depth to the unit with five picks on Day 3 of the draft, but having a veteran in the room doesn’t hurt.

Elandon Roberts, Las Vegas Raiders

Roberts hasn’t played for the Dolphins since 2022, but it’s hard to forget the physicality he added to the defense. After starting 29 games over two seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Roberts continued his journey farther west to the Raiders.

The New England Patriots selected Roberts in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, which means he’ll be re-connecting with former teammate Tom Brady, who is now a minority owner of the Raiders.

Miami signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker K.J. Britt, who brings the same hard-hitting attitude to the linebacker group behind Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson. While it’s nice to have players who thrive in space in today’s pass-happy NFL, nothing ends a drive like a run-stuffing linebacker on Third and 2.

Trent Sherfield, Denver Broncos

There was a moment during the 2022 season when Trent Sherfield was the perfect complement to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Fast forward two seasons, and while Miami hopes Nick Westbrook-Ikhine is the answer at No. 3 wide receiver, Sherfield hasn’t matched the production he had for the Dolphins.

Sherfield, at 6’1” and 206 pounds, set career highs in receptions (30), yards (417), and touchdowns (two) with the Dolphins, but has only 19 receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the two years since leaving Miami.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Champ Kelly Edition

Las Vegas Raiders Announce Coaching Changes

During a busy week of notable free agent player signings and losses, our Miami Dolphins also made a noteworthy addition to their front office. Miami added former Las Vegas Raiders assistant general manager Champ Kelly. Kelly is well-respected around the league and has been interviewed by several NFL franchises for their open GM positions in the past few years. Kelly’s new title with Miami is senior personnel executive.

We are all aware that much of the blame for the Dolphins' recent failures by the fans has fallen at the feet of current general manager Chris Grier. A large portion of the fan base was calling for Grier, Mike McDaniel, or both to be fired after this past season's failure to make the playoffs. There were also rumors that Grier might be looking to step down from his GM position to move into another position within the organization.

No one knows what owner Stephen Ross will do if the following season results in another round of disappointment. It is well known that Ross is fond of Grier, but if things are not working, changes will be made at some point. Grier might also turn the rumor of him stepping down to take a different position into reality in order to avoid unemployment if he senses that Ross is about to pull the trigger on relieving him of his duties.

I wonder if he was brought in precisely with the idea that he would move into Grier's position after this upcoming season. Perhaps the rumors that Grier would step down and take a different position were true, and the person or people who initially leaked the news were just off on their timeline. Maybe that was the initial plan, but either Grier or Ross decided the timing was wrong.

I am all for them adding him to this front office with the idea of more help, and different viewpoints are always good. I do, though, wonder why other organizations did not hire him after the new Raiders GM let him go if he had interviewed with so many different clubs. I also wonder why the Raiders, an organization that has been promoted from within in the past, did not hire him or even keep him on the staff following the loss of their previous general manager.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is: If Grier steps down or is fired after this upcoming season, would you like the team to move Kelly into the GM position, making it a more effortless and smoother transition for all sides involved? Would you instead prefer to see the team look outside the organization for someone with an entirely different take on building a team versus what you have seen from the Dolphins and Raiders in the past?

Recapping Dolphins first week of free agency - The Splash Zone 3/17/25

NFL: Green Bay Packers at Pittsburgh Steelers

Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

It’s been one week since NFL free agency kicked off and the Miami Dolphins have brought in several news faces. Yesterday they added a new punter to the team in Ryan Stonehouse, who will be a huge upgrade over Jake Bailey. Stonehouse did not have that great of a season last year compared to his previous seasons. But he was recovering from a torn ACL, MCL and a broken bone after he had a punt blocked late in 2023. But the Dolphins really haven’t made an big splash signings as of now. They may have added one of the better guards in the market with James Daniels, but there is still plenty of work to be done. Chris Grier is going to have to hit on a ton of draft picks next month if he wants this team to have success this upcoming season.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Unfinished Business Edition

Miami Dolphins v Cleveland Browns

Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

The first week of free agency is behind us, and like every other NFL team, our Miami Dolphins added their fair share of free agents to the roster. Some of these guys were just Miami re-signing their own guys, and others were the new guys brought in as upgrades, replacements, or depth. Even with the multiple signings and the NFL draft coming up at the end of next month, areas of the roster need to be addressed. I have my idea of at least a couple of places that they should or need to still add some depth to before the draft, but this is, of course, not about me but about what you think.

So tonight, Phinsider's question of the day is: What area of the roster/positions would you still like to see your Miami Dolphins address before the draft via free agency? Beyond the specific area of the roster or position, do you have any players you believe the Dolphins should re-sign from their own list of free agents or another free agent still out there from another team that would be an excellent fit for this roster?

MOCK DRAFT: Mel Kiper projects Dolphins to replace major star in latest mock

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Dolphins dump Terron Armstead and welcome Will Campbell in latest mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper.

With the National Football League’s free agency frenzy slowing down, fans’ focus has once again shifted to the 2025 NFL Draft and the multitude of mocks being done all across the world wide web — including some from yours truly.

Today’s featured mock draft comes from longtime NFL Draft guru, ESPN’s Mel Kiper. Kiper has been covering the draft since 1984 and is often considered the father of mock drafting, so when he speaks, plenty of ears perk up.

So, who did Kiper select for the Miami Dolphins in his Tuesday morning mock?

LSU offensive lineman, Will Campbell, was his pick — but his reasoning may surprise you.

Left tackle Terron Armstead will be 34 if he returns for the 2025 season, but that’s a big if. He is mulling retirement, and the Dolphins are operating as if he won’t be back. So, considering the concussion and injury history of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Miami should be focused on finding Armstead’s heir apparent. Plus, this team ranked 28th in pass block win rate last season (55.7%), so it needs upgrading anyway.

Yes, Campbell’s arm length comes into question. He measured 32⅝ inches at the combine, which isn’t ideal for an NFL offensive tackle. But plenty of tackles start their careers at guard, and Campbell’s great footwork points to a successful career despite the length limitations.

The selection of an offensive lineman at pick #13 isn’t surprising, but the fact that Kiper would project Campbell to be Armstead’s successor at left tackle should raise some eyebrows, considering the Dolphins seemed to have already drafted that player in 2024 second-round pick Patrick Paul.

Kiper does mention that Campbell could start his career at guard, and that would be the likely scenario if Miami were to make him the selection in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. We will find out in just over a month if ESPN’s lead draft analyst is correct in assuming Chris Grier will want to continue to shore up Miami’s offensive line after signing James Daniels and re-signing Liam Eichenberg this offseason.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: To Trade Down or Not To Trade Down Edition

Miami Dolphins News Conference

Our Miami Dolphins once again underperformed last season based on the fan base's expectations. The cause is likely the same as it has always been: the lack of quality talent at specific roster spots and/or the lack of quality talent among the depth players. The team’s season was all but completely derailed when starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa went down yet again to injury. With the total lack of quality at the backup quarterback position, the team could not dig themselves out of the hole they had dug once Tua returned from IR. That lack of depth also applies to other positions on the team on both sides of the ball, with both starters and depth pieces.

So, what’s the solution to a roster's lack of talent? It's clear that it involves acquiring better talent, and there are three ways to do this in the NFL: sign free agents, trade for players, or draft players. The first two options are fine, except that the team suffers from salary cap issues that prevent them from engaging with top-notch players during free agency and/or trading for top talent/high-dollar players from another team. Occasionally, a player may not fit well on another roster, allowing for a beneficial value trade, but these deals tend to be more of an exception than the norm. Then there’s the third and most practical method...

The most logical method of building any roster seems to be via the draft, then using free agency and trades to top off your roster when your roster is ready to compete for a championship. The Dolphins seemed to embrace this concept but maybe pulled the trigger a couple/a few years too early, falsely believing that the roster was “there,” thus trading away still much-needed draft capital. That brings us to this year's NFL draft. Miami will enter the draft, barring any trades to give away or acquire more picks before the draft, with 10 picks. Their top pick comes at #13 in the first round. There is also, when a lot of new/fresh/young talent is needed on a roster, the idea of trading down to acquire more picks.

A strong argument exists for staying at 13 versus trading down to acquire more picks. In most drafts, a player's talent level at 13 is likely to be higher than what you can obtain by trading down a few to several picks. There are exceptions, as better talent sometimes slides for various reasons, including conduct issues, rumors, injury concerns, or because teams ahead of you are picking based on need rather than the overall quality of the player. Our Miami Dolphins have benefited significantly from these kinds of slides in the past, notably with QB Dan Marino and, more recently, with OT Laremy Tunsil. The argument for trading down is twofold in Miami’s case. They need more talent at multiple positions and better depth on the roster, and since the draft can often be a hit or miss, it additionally improves the team's chances of having more players who succeed.

So, what would it be worth if the team traded down? Well, there are more draft pick value charts out there than ever. The chart began with former Miami Hurricanes, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins head coach Jimmy Johnson. While most believe that his chart is outdated, the truth is that any pick is only worth what some other team is willing to give up, which is generally driven by how desperate they are to move up to take a particular player. Over the Cap has a decent chart HERE that you can check out to gauge the overall value of each pick. Searching the internet will also give you a variety of “proposed trades” for other teams to move up to 13 in this year's draft.

So tonight’s Phinsider question of the day is: Would you like to see the Dolphins trade out their 13th overall pick to add more picks, and what would you hope to receive in return? Would you also possibly be in favor of trading down more than one time in more than one round in an attempt to add as many picks as possible (ala the New England Patriots of old), or do you believe that in most rounds, it would serve the team better to stay pat in most or all rounds and pick the best possible player available?

Please give us your answers and thoughts in the comments section below-

Dolphins, four other teams to meet with South Carolina safety prospect

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl - South Carolina vs Illinois

The 2025 NFL Draft has clear-cut top safeties — could one slip to round 2?

Attention is turning to the 2025 NFL Draft with the first wave of free agency slowly coming to a close.

With a third-round compensatory pick, the Miami Dolphins hold three of the draft’s top 100 selections and could benefit from at least two immediate contributors by the end of Day 2. Cornerback, defensive tackle, and guard are obvious needs at pick No. 13, but safety remains another possibility.

South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori will travel to Flowery Branch to meet with Falcons in coming week or two, he said Tuesday. He also is visiting Panthers, Seahawks, Bengals and Dolphins.

— Josh Kendall (@JoshTheAthletic) March 18, 2025

According to The Athletic’s Josh Kendall, the Miami Dolphins (holding picks 13 and 48 in the first two rounds), the Atlanta Falcons (15 and 46), the Carolina Panthers (8 and 57), the Seattle Seahawks (18, 50, and 52), and the Cincinnati Bengals (17 and 49) are all planning to meet with South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori in the coming weeks.

Emmanwori appeared in 37 games over three years at South Carolina, recording 88 tackles, four interceptions, three tackles for loss, and two pick-sixes in 13 games last season. An Associated Press First-Team All-American, he has the talent to be an immediate Day 1 starter in Miami’s defense.

The Dolphins signed safeties Ifeatu Melifonwu and Ashtyn Davis early in free agency. While a top-15 pick may be too rich for a safety, Miami needs to rebuild the position after losing Jevon Holland to the New York Giants. If a top prospect falls to the Dolphins at pick 13, they could consider trading back into the late first or early second round to land one of the draft’s top safeties.

NFL Mock Draft 2025: A growing trend for Miami’s first-round pick?

Florida v Georgia

Daniel Jeremiah sees Georgia safety Malaki Starks as just what the Miami Dolphins need.

With less than a month until the 2025 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins’ secondary remains a work in progress. Whether it’s a cornerback or a safety, drafting a defensive back in the first round could solidify one of the roster’s largest issues.

On Tuesday, Kevin Nogle, the Phinsider’s managing editor, projected South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori as the Dolphins’ first-round pick. NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah followed suit in his latest mock draft.

After projecting Texas’ Kelvin Banks Jr. in his initial mock and Alabama guard Tyler Booker in 2.0, Jeremiah flipped to the defensive side and selected Malaki Starks for the Dolphins at No. 13.

“The further we get into the evaluation process, the more teams I find that are in love with Starks’ game,” Jeremiah wrote. “He would be a plug-and-play replacement for Jevon Holland, with the versatility to play as a high safety or nickelback.”

Drafting Starks, a two-time First-Team All-SEC safety during his time with the Bulldogs, would add another flexible piece on the back line of Anthony Weaver’s defense. He led Georgia with 77 tackles while starting 13 games last season.

Despite signing safeties Ashtyn Davis and Ifeatu Melifonwu in free agency, Starks has the potential to start on Day One and develop into a long-term defensive pillar, something the Dolphins could use after losing Holland to the New York Giants.

Whether it’s Starks or Emmanwori, a first-round investment at safety could be the difference-maker Miami needs in the secondary.

Dolphins clear additional cap space with Austin Jackson restructure

Buffalo Bills v Miami Dolphins

Are the Miami Dolphins and Chris Grier about to make a move?

Lost among the Benito Jones signing was this lovely little nugget from the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson that the team has restructured a key player — freeing up additional cap space for general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel to use in free agency and the draft.

According to Jackson, Over the Cap reports that the Miami Dolphins and right tackle Austin Jackson have agreed to restructure his contract.

Jackson, 25, signed a three-year extension with the Dolphins last offseason worth an additional $36 million. He would start eight games for Miami before having his season cut short due to a knee injury. Jackson is now healthy and ready to build upon his strong 2023 campaign.

As for Jackson’s contract restructure, although all the terms are not yet fully known, Over the Cap reports that Miami will convert $9.71 million of Jackson’s 2025 salary into a bonus. His 2025 cap hit was expected to be $13.83 million before the restructure.

Restructures, however, come with a cost, and it appears the first of those ‘costs’ will come next year when Jackson is set to make an additional $1.942 million — bringing his 2026 cap hit to $15.8 million.

Here’s the official snippet from OTC:

“The Dolphins converted $9.71 million of Jackson’s 2025 salary into a signing bonus, reducing his salary cap number by $7.768 million. Each additional contract year, including void years, will see a cap increase of $1.942 million.”

Adding additional money to void years seems counterproductive, but the Dolphins had to get flexible. And for guys like Grier and McDaniel — who could have their future decided based on the outcome of this upcoming season — it needed to be done. The question is, what’s next?

It’s hard to say what this move means for the Dolphins. Could they be readying to give 38-year-old Calais Campbell a hefty contract to return? Perhaps they have their eyes set on a cornerback or safety. Or maybe, just maybe, they let things play out and use that money for their 2025 NFL draft class & any emergency players they need to sign later in training camp.

Whatever the reason, the Dolphins now have a bit more cap space to play with.

What are your thoughts on Austin Jackson restructuring his contract? Do you think this means Calais Campbell will be back? What other players would you like to see Miami bring in this offseason? Let us know in the comments section below!

Dolfans sound off on Champ Kelly's addition to the front office

New York Jets v Las Vegas Raiders

I wrote an article/PQOTD post last week about the addition of former Las Vegas Raiders assistant GM Champ Kelly. Kelly’s new title with our Miami Dolphins is senior personnel executive. The team has thus far not stated Kelly’s complete list of duties with the team. I then asked the following questions:

If Grier steps down or is fired after this upcoming season, would you like the team to move Kelly into the GM position, making it a more effortless and smoother transition for all sides involved? Would you instead prefer to see the team look outside the organization for someone with an entirely different take on building a team versus what you have seen from the Dolphins and Raiders in the past?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

MIAMI235 knows the answer to what we should do is not simple, although it should be by now.

It ought to be obvious what SUCCESS looks like. However, with where we are at as a Team, determining the correct direction, may not be as simple as wins and losses. Though it should be.

Yarganaught is not totally opposed to the job Grier has done but wishes he would stop giving in to others with a stake and drafting “projects” that might not eventually pan out.

I guess I’m not one of those fans who is all that upset with the job Grier has done. Has he been perfect... no. But he seems to always find the $$$, and does better than most give him credit for with the Draft. If anything, I feel like he makes too many concessions to the coaches when he drafts a project like an Iggy or Cam Smith.

dedstrk316 wants Ross to exercise careful consideration. dedstrk326 also trusts Crabbs take on the new hire.

I would hope Ross takes everything into consideration and look outside the organization. I know nothing about this guy at all.

Kyle Crabbs from Locked on Dolphins is very positive about the hire so I will be also. Kyle is one I trust when getting Dolphins information.

SlayerNation1 doesn't want Ross to settle but instead overturn every stone to find the right guy.

If/When Grier is done at GM, I should hope Ross does an earnest search for a replacement from the outside (Same for HC).

Kelly would already be an insider at that point and indoctrinated into an already failed ecosystem.

Kelly hasn’t landed as a permanent GM yet with a stint as Interim. Diligence is always Due. Please don’t settle for quick and easy.

Dolfanjoe isn’t worrying about any of it now.

If they do not put it together this year, there will be a new GM and head coach next year. Really no need to worry about who they hire this year.

Miami7 prefers to go after someone from one of the well-run organizations.

Know nothing about the guy....but a Raiders cast-off isn’t the necessarily the dumpster I’d be divin’ in lookin’ toward the future. But....like with pretty much nearly every decision of the past 30 years, I’m sure it’ll work out swimmingly.

This team ‘already set’ to compete, just needing the fringes? ..............WOW?!!!!!!

The furure’s so bright I gotta wear shades....to hide from the inevitable embarrassment that awaits. Certainly wanna be sure to pluck candidates to aid future plans that come from the most well run organizations.

finfanfromsiam says ditto!

Someone from winning organization that has a proven formula! Need new unDolphins blood! Not Raiders, Jags, Brownies, ect....

It seems as if most of you are where I was with this guy. I doubt this is “the guy” if the Raiders let him go, and all of his other interviews for GM resulted in nothing. Thank you, as always, to each of you who took the time to answer our question of the day. Please join us tomorrow evening for our Victory Of The Week post and Saturday for another PQOTD response post.

MAREK’S MOCK: Full Miami Dolphins 7-round 2025 NFL Draft mock version 5.0

NFL Scouting Combine

Who should the Miami Dolphins select in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Wake up! It’s Friday! And with another Friday comes another mock draft from yours truly! Last week, the National Football League gifted the Miami Dolphins an additional 7th round pick thanks to the complicated mechanisms contained within the compensatory formula. Well actually, that was a short lived joy as the NFL quickly removed Miami’s 11th pick due to a clerical error committed by a nerd sitting at a desk in the NFL’s offices. This brings Miami’s total number of draft picks in the upcoming draft back down to 10 selections — but that’s still a lot to work with!

As a reminder, once a week, every week until the 2025 NFL Draft, I’ll be doing a full 7-round mock, and then giving you a chance to grade my results. Each draft will look slightly different, because, let’s be honest, the Dolphins have a ton of needs and can go in a million different directions come late April when the actual NFL Draft kicks off.

This exercise will allow us to examine different pathways to success for our beloved South Florida franchise, while hopefully having some fun in the process!

So, without further adieu, let’s unwrap my latest mock draft!

ROUND 1 - Pick #13

Malaki Starks — SAF — Georgia

What the experts are saying:

Three-year starter with reams of high-leverage games on his résumé. Starks is a versatile safety with the size and athleticism to eliminate contested catches and the speed and ball skills to shine when the action travels deep. Connection to the route is inconsistent in man and he’s baited out of position by misdirection, but better discipline and anticipation should clean that up. He’s not a true force player near the line and his pursuit angles can be raggedy but he gets guys down when he’s in position. Starks has feast-or-famine moments on tape and disappointed with his short-area testing at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran well in Indianapolis, though, and was impressive in interviews with teams. He is a future starter as a movable back-end piece whose consistency will determine his floor/ceiling. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 2 - Pick #48

Wyatt Milum — OG — West Virginia

What the experts are saying:

West Virginia Mountaineers offensive lineman Wyatt Milum is a well-built presence along the offensive line who offers scheme versatility at the next level. Milum plays with good cadence, effective mobility, and power at the point of attack, as well as plenty of experience, which should suit him well as he transitions to the NFL.

Milum’s best NFL outlook is likely on the interior because of some of his physical limitations with agility and length. These issues can create challenges in space or on the edge, but I can foresee him developing into a sufficient level starter on the interior, where those limitations are more masked. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 3 - Pick #98

Omarr Norman-Lott — DT — Tennessee

What the experts are saying:

Tennessee Volunteers defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott projects as an interior pass rusher at the NFL level. There’s developmental upside present to tap into as a potential long-term starter, but Norman-Lott’s first step quickness, immediate power, and heavy hands all combine for a challenging profile to stay in front of in protection.

He’s a player with significant growth potential despite his status as a 23-year-old rookie. He logged less than 1,000 defensive snaps across five seasons of college play between Arizona State and Tennessee. His anchor and point-of-attack skills aren’t where you’d prefer them as a run defender, but he has the physical tools at his disposal to make positive strides if he lands in an environment that can nurture his potential. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 4 - Pick #116

Terrance Ferguson — TE — Oregon

What the experts are saying:

Oregon Ducks tight end Terrance Ferguson looks and plays like a flex tight end. His performance in the Oregon passing game features a good look at how he’d be optimized at the NFL level, too. He’s effective running hitches and shallow crosses underneath while offering a big-bodied presence up the seam with good concentration and body control.

However, his room for growth lies in his contributions beyond being a big receiver. He may be the victim of a culture shock when he’s required to offer more sturdy contributions in the run game moving forward, which creates a challenging developmental curve. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 4 - Pick #135

Demetrius Knight Jr. — LB — South Carolina

What the experts are saying:

Passionate linebacker with great size, good instincts and a feel for how to play the position. Knight is a fluid athlete with average pursuit speed and short-area burst. He uses his eyes and instincts to diagnose quickly and he maneuvers around bodies like a running back. He’s adept at slipping blocks and rarely allows blockers to stick and sustain on the second level. He’s aware and productive in zone but could struggle to stay connected in man coverage. He’s not a twitchy mover but knows how to play the game and has a chance to play on all three downs. Knight’s field demeanor and football character should seal the deal as a future starter at inside ‘backer. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 5 - Pick #150

Jordan Phillips — DT — Maryland

What the experts are saying:

Maryland Terrapins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips projects as an athletic starting nose tackle at the NFL level. This is a young talent who, as a redshirt sophomore, posted impressive tape as a point-of-attack defender with lateral range and the anchor ability to hold the point and protect his linebackers.

There’s enough athletic upside with Phillips to warrant consideration for a long-term role that is more diverse and impactful on passing downs, too. He has a good first step and heavy hands that can create momentum for power rushes back into the lap of the quarterback. Phillips is built squatty and low to the ground, which affords him ample natural leverage to anchor double teams. He also shows good technique in dropping a knee and eating combo blocks to clog the interior. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 5 - Pick #155

Charles Grant — OT — William & Mary

What the experts are saying:

Highly consistent performer with elite length and better technique than many prospects coming from a higher level of competition. Grant played with both urgency and positioning in William & Mary’s zone-heavy approach, but he needs to add bulk and improve his pad level to play with the drive and anchor needed as a pro. The former high school wrestler utilizes a bag of tricks with his protection approach and possesses adequate core strength to absorb a speed-to-power pass rush. He could develop into a solid pro as either a guard or tackle if he cleans up issues with hand usage. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #224

Jalen Travis — OT —
Iowa State

What the experts are saying:

Iowa State Cyclones offensive tackle Jalen Travis projects as a developmental tackle to the NFL level. Travis played one year at Iowa State after securing his undergraduate degree while playing at Princeton and showcased NFL-caliber strength and length on the edge.

His technical development, particularly with his hand usage, will be key in unlocking his potential. He has starter traits, although he is a bit less dynamic and forceful in the run game than you’d expect when you see his profile up close and in person. Travis would greatly benefit from finding more engagement in his lower half to sustain push and momentum to create displacement at the point of attack. (Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #231

Ja’Corey Brooks — WR — Louisville

What the experts are saying:

Brooks posted a career year at Louisville in 2024 after three seasons at Alabama. He has good size and average speed. He’s a decent athlete with the length and ball skills to have success downfield. He’s not going to outrun many NFL corners on a sprint and he’s too tight-hipped to uncover with his route-running, which is one reason for so many contested catches. The touchdown production and yards per catch are favorable, but Brooks might have to fight for a back-end spot on a roster. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

___

ROUND 7 - Pick #253

Brady Cook — QB — Missouri

What the experts are saying:

Tantalizing prospect thanks to his athleticism and arm talent but the more I studied, the more doubt creeped in. Cook played with a better command of the offense in 2023, which led to better in-game rhythm and results. He can make every NFL throw but struggles to make them with consistent timing and accuracy. Cook needs to improve his eye discipline to keep windows open and safeties out of his business. He’s an average decision-maker and field-reader who defaults to unsound passing platforms when he feels pressure. He has the size and mobility to make plays as a scrambler and with designed runs. Cook’s physical traits and athletic ability are worth a discussion as a developmental prospect. (Lance Zierlein, NFL.com)

Dolphins top needs after free agency - The Splash Zone 3/22/25

NFL: DEC 08 Jets at Dolphins

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

The Miami Dolphins have had two weeks to sign new players and bring back some of their own. While they haven’t made any splash moves, they have added players who should be big contributors to this football team this year. We are a month away from the 2025 NFL Draft and the Dolphins still need help at several positions. The Dolphins desperately need help at cornerback with no clear starter opposite Jalen Ramsey right now. The team also needs some help behind Zach Sieler along the defensive line as there isn’t much depth there as Miami waits on a Calais Campbell decision. It won’t be shocking to see the Dolphins invest multiple picks in those positions next month, along with some offensive line picks.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Miami Dolphins Unfinished Business You Want Addressed

NFL: DEC 29 Dolphins at Browns

Photo by Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

With likely the lion's share of free agents our Miami Dolphins are going to add this offseason being already added at this point,t I asked the following question in a previous post:

What area of the roster/positions would you still like to see your Miami Dolphins address before the draft via free agency? Beyond the specific area of the roster or position, do you have any players you believe the Dolphins should re-sign from their own list of free agents or another free agent still out there from another team that would be an excellent fit for this roster?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

finfanfromsiam says hi and wants a free agent addition from last season added back to the roster.

Calais Campbell and evening!

Alley Gator wants the safety free agent from the Colts.

Julian Blackmon, S, Colts. It fits for zone, cover 2, and cover 3. Counting on injury-prone Ifeatu

dedstrk316 wants some more help for the defense that is not injury-prone.

We need to get a DL or an actual CB not an injury prone Artie Burns. If we can get one of those two I’d feel okay going into the draft. CC being the obvious choice for me. I’d also accept getting Julian Blackmon. Then we can go into the draft looking to select one or two of these positions in the first and second round.

Jptapt doesn’t believe the front office has addressed any position correctly up to this point.

I’m not sure any positions have been addressed adequately. Maybe some backup spots at best. As I said elsewhere, I don’t see anything yet that makes me think we are headed to the playoffs this year. Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t see it so far.

Dolfanjoe second’s Clark's sentiment. And for my money, a past-his-prime Calais is still a damn good option.

Cambell ? He’s old and past his prime ! Certainly someone will tell him this and he will get his cane and just make it to the lounge chair ! Who wouldn’t want him on there team ? Get him signed and wait till the draft and the undrafted. Truly our only hope for the season !

cyberflea did not have an answer but did have some interesting information.

MIAMI DOLPHINS IN LATEST NATIONAL POWER RANKINGS

NFL.com Rank: 20 Among AFC Teams: 9

Analysis: After losing starters on both sides of the ball, the Dolphins have tried to patch those holes in the secondary and on the offensive line. But more than anything, it has been a steady drip of end-of-roster additions. (For example: New RB Alexander Mattison will presumably play a bit role in short-yardage situations, at best.) They’re preaching patience on South Beach, but it’s hard not to be more than a little concerned with the fact that a few starting jobs are up for grabs now, and we still don’t know if LT Terron Armstead will be back for another year. OL additions James Daniels and Larry Borom could both end up starting, and Miami still likely needs one more interior blocker. Both the O-line and secondary have me worried. I’m gonna try that patience thing, but the current state of this roster spawns anxiety.

Pro Football Focus Rank: 21 Among AFC Teams: 9

Analysis: Losing Jevon Holland is a significant blow to a Dolphins defense that ranked eighth in EPA allowed per drop back in 2024. Miami attempted to fill the void by signing Ifeatu Melifonwu, a promising young player who is still a downgrade from Holland. With a full season of Tua Tagovailoa under center, Miami’s offense should be more efficient. However, keeping him upright and healthy remains a priority. The signing of James Daniels provides a potential upgrade in protection, but he is coming off an Achilles injury suffered last September, leaving some uncertainty about his impact.

USA Today Rank: 21 Among AFC Teams: 9

Analysis: Question – what do you get when you tie up a ton of money into a quarterback and No. 2 receiver frequently short-circuited by injuries to go with an otherworldly (if often moody) WR1? Answer – Bengals South … which means the softer, less imposing version.

The Sporting News Rank: 20 Among AFC Teams: 9

Analysis: The Dolphins feel like they’re trying to lift Tua Tagovailoa as much as possible by not totally trusting him. They might not be able to do that with more of a defensive fade in store.

We didn’t receive the largest response, but it’s clear that there are needs you all feel still need to be addressed. Calais Campbell still appears to be a popular choice as a hopeful future addition. That guy, at his age, is amazing. I hope you are all having an excellent weekend, and as always, thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our daily questions.

FILM | Dolphins see ‘untapped potential’ in QB Zach Wilson and I do too

Denver Broncos v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Zach Wilson is now Miami’s QB2, but is it enough to overcome Tua Tagovailoa’s inevitable injuries? Let’s check out the tape! #FinsUp

For two consecutive seasons, I frantically wrote up my thoughts on the players I’d like to see the Miami Dolphins sign most in free agency. And for the second straight year, a young gunslinger named Zach Wilson made my list — which is hypocritical, considering this is the same Zach Wilson that I made jokes about on social media and trolled the New York Jets fanbase for selecting over Justin Fields. (Jokes on me, I guess)

Nevertheless, he’s now an uber-important part of our favorite team — given Tua Tagovailoa’s long history of injuries and inability to stay healthy — whether we like it or not. “The Bad” may be all you remember about Wilson, but the Dolphins see ‘untapped potential.

The question many are wondering, though, is whether or not there is something worth building upon. Even more important, is whether or not he can win a football game or two or three when Tua does go down.

Let’s take a look at what the 2023 film says.

Before we dive into the tape, let’s remember::::

What the scouts were saying about Zach Wilson pre-draft!

Lance Zierlein: Ascending quarterback prospect who possesses the swagger and arm talent to create explosive plays inside and outside the pocket. The gunslinger’s mentality and improvised release points are clearly patterned off of one of his favorite players, Aaron Rodgers. However, his play is a little more reminiscent of a blend between Jake Plummer and Johnny Manziel coming out of college. As with Manziel, too much of Wilson’s work comes off-schedule due to inconsistent anticipation and a desire to hit the big play. But like both Manziel (at Texas A&M) and Plummer, he’s mobile with the ability to extend plays and hit the chunk play. Wilson’s sophomore year tape shows troubling decision-making, so NFL teams will need to balance his 2019 and 2020 production in the evaluation process. He’s put in a lot of work to get to this point and has the potential to become a good pro. However, he might need to play with a more disciplined approach to reach his ceiling.

How does Zach Wilson fit with the Dolphins?

For those of us who may have thought Miami would bring in a more experienced veteran to back up Tua Tagovailoa, we may have been wrong. As of now, it seems like Wilson is the Dolphins QB2 despite his 12-21 career record. The last time he saw any regular season action was in 2023, when he started 11 games for the Jets, completing 60.1% of his passes for 2271 yards, 8 TDs, and 7 INTs.

He’s now THE guy to backup Tua, which likely means he’ll play at least a game or two throughout the upcoming season. I’m not sure that necessarily instills faith in me, but after so many years of having quarterbacks that are what they are, having a bit of unknown in a former second-overall pick is kinda exciting.

What does the film say about Zach Wilson?

I tried to go back and find the good in Wilson’s film, as I think we all remember the dreadful performances by the young quarterback. The one trait that immediately stood out was the same trait that got him drafted so damn high in the first place, and that was his rocket arm. He puts zip on the ball that tua and other QBs simply can not. This helps him make up for maybe seeing things a bit late.

He made a few throws to the tight end down the seam or after avoiding the pass-rush that made me sit up in my computer chair. No, he’s not tua in that regard, but there’s definitely SOMETHING there. Untapped potential, as I think Miami has called it. It’s a pretty sight when everything is perfect, and he’s in rhythm.

Wilson did appear to move around in the pocket well and knew when to take off or roll out when necessary. This is an added dynamic that he brings to the table that other quarterbacks have not — even if Snoop Huntley showed a little bit of that potential last season.

Check out my cut-up below! Like and subscribe too if you enjoy this type of #content :)

The Verdict

All in all, my good pal Brian Cat said it best: regardless of who the backup quarterback is, the season rests on the shoulders of Tua Tagovailoa and Tua Tagovailoa alone. If he goes down, the ship— as we’ve seen before — goes down with it. Only this time, instead of a journeyman backup like Teddy Bridgewater, Mike White, Skylar Thompson, or Snoop Huntley, Miami’s backup quarterback is a 25-year-old former first-round draft pick with ‘untapped potential’ (Those words are not mine.... but I do agree!).

I like the signing and see the potential, but are we any more confident this year than in years prior? Is Zach Wilson enough to help keep the ship afloat? I want to answer with a resounding YES, but I’ve been wrong about these types of things before. Nevertheless, there’s a good chance we’ll get our answer sooner rather than later.

What are your thoughts on Zach Wilson signing with the Dolphins? Are you confident in his ability to start if/when Tua Tagovailoa drops? Is there another quarterback you would have preferred? Let us know in the comments section below!

Your take on the Dolphins trading down or staying pat!

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl - South Carolina vs Illinois

South Carolina Gamecocks DB Nick Emmanwori | Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Last week, I discussed how some fans supported our Miami Dolphins trading down in the first round to acquire extra picks. Many other fans would prefer the team to stay at 13 to maximize the overall talent level of their first-round pick. During this time of year, the usual wave of rumors—mostly proven to be false—also suggests both ideas with various possible outcomes. These are all just wild guesses until we see how the draft unfolds with the preceding picks and who might fall or be taken off the board sooner than anticipated.

I then asked the following question:

Would you like to see the Dolphins trade out their 13th overall pick to add more picks, and what would you hope to receive in return? Would you also possibly be in favor of trading down more than one time in more than one round in an attempt to add as many picks as possible (ala the New England Patriots of old), or do you believe that in most rounds, it would serve the team better to stay pat in most or all rounds and pick the best possible player available?

I also posted a poll with the following question:

Would you like to see your Miami Dolphins trade down from their 13th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft?

The results are as follows-

  • 51% or 203 of you chose- Yes, this team needs all the picks and talent it can add.
  • 33% or 131 of you chose- No, please draft the best talent available at 13.
  • 16% or 62 of you chose- No, unless some team offers a stupid, cannot refuse kind of a deal in return.

Below are some of your thoughts and answers to the question of the day-

MIAMI235 wants to trade down. I think that’s what that means...

Down, down, down….

DalFinsFan wants Grier to stop screwing around.

CG likes to move all over the draft so he can play “I’m the smartest GM in the league” but it rarely works out positively. How about he just let the draft come to him this year and pick BPA since we need players at every position.

Miami7 prefers to stay at 13 if you believe a player available there will be a surefire star or game-changing type. If not, consider trading down.

The chances of attaining a generational talent - (who’s the last Miami draft pick we’d ably say that about...X? Or all the way back to Zach/JT?)...no matter what one’s opinion on that....it’s too far & in between. They (one player) change/influence SO many things, as a rarity able to affect as much as two others, lift those around him. The best ‘chance’ to get a generational talent is to draft as early as conviction that he’s the guy allows. If ya believe in a guy ‘enough’ take him. If yer on the fence trade out.

Get two guys that solidify in whatever ways they might. Not any ‘wrong’ choice. I just prefer to find THE guy and have a Dolphin player that changes games/is a focal point for opposing teams. I hope pick #13 is the greatest player to ever don a Miami Dolphins uniform! Even if the uniforms suck now! Hahaha

FinsRegard is implying I don’t know what exactly. Maybe that the Dolphins are just flat-out cursed?

I read the Jimmy Johnson Bio a lot in Florida over the decades.I read it like this.Last game with the Canes national champion.Last game with the Cowboys , Super Bowl win.Last game with the Dolphins 62 -7 loss at Jacksonville.

Luvs2drnk2.0 wants more options! Don't we all!?!

This can’t really be summed up with the options available. I’m all for trading down, but only if they are still able to get a starting caliber player with the lower pick. Trading down just to get more picks doesn’t mean you’re going to get more talent. It might give you a better chance, but it kind of gets negated as you’re taking a chance that multiple lower picks will be just as valuable as the higher pick being traded. I would only trade down if there is not a day one starter at S or CB available at 13. The moves they have made in FA seem to indicate that is where they are going to go in the first round.

SlayerNation1 says to just go with the best player available at 13, as it will fill an area of need. Sadly, that’s probably correct, even if it’s not the most significant area of need.

Overall BPA at 13. It will be some area of need and a Week 1 starter. This GM/HC don’t come off as clever enough to cash in on more picks. They will get grifted by a sharper Front Office.

Francesco ITA says to wait to see how the board falls.

you cant plan to trade down after the 5 first picks, because you dont know which players will fall to you... and deciding to trade down a priori means giving up on exercising your role, which is to take the best possible players for your team

herbert pollack says Grier is finally listening to us. If only!

Looks like Chris is listening to us He isnt wearing a baseball hat with a suit

twinssdfan just wants to wait to see who falls. Someone always seems to.

I’d keep the 13 pick someone is bound to fall, do a compllete report in scouting all players and any Red Flags.

Alley Gator says to trade with someone else who has been as terrible and irresponsible with the cap as the Dolphins.

“So, what’s the solution to a roster’s lack of talent? It’s clear that it involves acquiring better talent, and there are three ways to do this in the NFL: sign free agents, trade for players, or draft players.”

Well we’ve signed players and traded for players till we at the end of our cap. The only way out is acquire as many picks as possible and play them, because they’re cheaper than what got us in this cap hell. Trade down if you can find anyone that’s as financially irresponsible as we were the last couple years.

There are ten random comments. The fan base seems divided on this issue, with some wanting to trade down to accumulate as many picks as possible to address the poor cap situation or due to the multiple holes needing filling on the current roster. Others prefer to draft the best talent available at 13. Some are fine with trading down if there isn't a truly game-changing player available when our pick comes up. As always, thank you to everyone who took the time to answer our question of the day. Please join us tomorrow evening for another PQOTD post.

The Miami Dolphins were expected to add quite a few free agents since they were going to have quite a few players with expiring contracts. The Dolphins made several moves to bolster their roster in the hopes that they can make it back to the postseason. The splashiest signing they made was for guard James Daniels, who will immediately upgrade the Dolphins offensive line. Wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine will be a boost to the wide receiver room with his blocking prowess and brings some much needed size to the receiver room. Who is your top signing for the Dolphins so far?

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Should They Or Shouldn't They Edition W/Poll

Miami Dolphins v Cleveland Browns

If nothing else, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is a polarizing figure. Some Dolphins fans would trade him for a piece of lint from your dryer, while others would sooner trade their own mother before letting Hill go. Hill has, at times, seemed like the entirety of the Dolphin's offense with his dynamic speed, which always seems to keep opposing defenses on their heels. Then there is the list of “issues” he has had before and since arriving in Miami.

This post isn't about his off-field history; instead, it focuses on the incident when he removed himself from the last game of the previous season, stating, "I’m out” after the game and the laundry list of speculation that it continues to fuel. While Hill and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, seem to have smoothed things over with the Miami Dolphins front office, the speculation that he will be traded this offseason could not be much higher. While there is speculation that he will be traded, no team is listed to have actually inquired about him.

Most of the stories seem to be from writers lacking other topics to cover. As far as I can tell, these stories do not appear to be based on any actual rumors or facts. Instead, they all seem to stem from speculation framed as predictions. One of these stories has the Dallas Cowboys trading their second and third-round picks for Hill. Another story is that the Green Bay Packers could CB Jaire Alexander, WR Romeo Doubs, and the 198th overall pick to Miami for HIll and their 224th overall pick. Another story lists the Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Commanders, and most surprisingly, the Buffalo Bills. I, for one, cannot see a world in which the Dolphins send Hill to the Bills unless they return just an asinine level of compensation.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is: Should our Miami Dolphins trade Tyreek Hill this offseason, and if so or not, why?

Please give us your thoughts and answers in the comments section below-

Dolphins get Zach Sieler a running mate in latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 02 Ole Miss at Arkansas

Photo by Andy Altenburger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

In the latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft from CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco, the Miami Dolphins fill a massive need in the middle of Anthony Weaver’s defense.

Before we get started, let me remind you of a phrase I live and die by:

“Mock drafts are like buttholes, everyone has one, and they all stink!”

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s break down Pete Prisco’s latest 2025 NFL mock draft, shall we? This time, however, the mock draft is a bit unique and has the Dolphins selecting a position of need, but maybe not necessarily a player who has been mocked to Miami in the past (There are three billion mock drafts, I’m sure there are a few).

But before we get into who Miami takes with the 13th overall pick, why Prisco made the selection, and our thoughts on the prospect, let’s take a look at the first twelve picks in the 2025 NFL Draft::::

  1. Tennessee Titans: Cam Ward, QB, Miami
  2. Cleveland Browns: Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State
  3. New York Giants: Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado
  4. New England Patriots: Will Campbell, OT, LSU
  5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado
  6. Las Vegas Raiders: Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State
  7. New York Jets: Mason Graham, DT, Michigan
  8. Carolina Panthers: Jalon Walker, EDGE, Georgia
  9. New Orleans Saints: Tyler Warren, TE, Penn State
  10. Chicago Bears: Kelvin Banks Jr, OT, Texas
  11. San Francisco 49ers: Jahdae Barron, CB, Texas
  12. Dallas Cowboys: Will Johnson, CB, Michigan

My Thoughts:

Not a ton of surprises here, but I’d be very upset if the Cowboys draft Will Johnson — ONE PICK — in front of Miami. As of March 25th, 2025, he is the ideal pick for Miami (IMHO), and I wonder if Michigan alum, Stephen Ross, would agree?

Nevertheless, Johnson is now in Dallas with a star on the side of his helmet. This means, it’s time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for::::

With the 13th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select:

Walter Nolen, Defensive Tackle, Ole Miss/Texas A&M

NCAA Football: Senior Bowl
Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images

HOMETOWN: MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

Here’s what Prisco had to say about the Dolphins selecting Nolen:

“When the Dolphins lost Christian Wilkins in free agency to the Raiders, the defense wasn’t the same. They need a player to go with Zach Sieler inside. They could also consider tackle or guard here as well.”

My Thoughts:

A lot could change between now and next month’s NFL Draft, especially if 38-year-old defensive tackle Calais Campbell decides to return this upcoming season. Miami is waiting patiently to see if he wants to play another season, and if he does, they’d be more than happy to have him back. In the meantime, they’ve watched talented players sign elsewhere. And if he were to hang up the cleats, they’d need to find someone else to man the battle station next to Zach Sieler in the middle of Miami’s defense.

So, I like the pick of Nolen, who I’ve heard nothing but good things about from people much smarter than me. That said, my biggest question is whether or not he’s better than Kenneth Grant or some of the other defensive line prospects in this loaded class. For example, could Miami draft Armand Membou here and then land Sieler’s tag-team partner on day two? Definitely something to consider.

Additionally, while it sucked to see Wilkins go, Campbell fell into Miami’s lap and helped ease the pain. Bentio Jones and some of the other role players also had a say in that. So it’s hard for me to fully agree with Prisco’s analysis that the defense was never the same. Obviously, it will never be the same as it was with salt and pepper playing next to one another. That said, it was awesome to see Campbell ball out in 2024. An encore would be ideal, but if he does call it quits, Miami would then be in dire need of a DT.

Making Walter Nolen a prime target for Dolphins general manager Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel in next month’s draft.

What are your thoughts on the Miami Dolphins selecting Walter Nolen with the 13th overall pick? What would you do if this is the way the board falls? Trade down? Select Nolen? Is there another player you fancy? Let us know in the comment section below!

Phinsider Question Of The Day: What Are Their Actual Plans Edition

New England Patriots v Miami Dolphins

I have no doubts that Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier appreciate starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as a person. He certainly seems like a genuinely friendly and good person. Unfortunately, while having players with those qualities is tremendous and even preferred, it’s not what he or any player in the NFL is being paid for. As much as I know, some of you are hoping this is another one of those “Do you think Tua is the guy?" posts where we ask you, the fan, to weigh in on what you think about him and his long-term future as a starter for the Dolphins. It’s not. It’s more of a what does the team think kinda post.

This is more about what you think the front office might be thinking about Tua’s long-term future as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. I see a lot of articles written about our Phins by various fan blogs/sites and even some of the most respected media outlets, who make just downright silly/stupid posts about the team. Some of these make you wonder if they have ever watched the team play over the last couple of seasons or know anything about the team's players and how good or bad they actually are before putting their idiocy into an article and sending it out over the internet for the entire world to ridicule.

Then, I read a couple of different articles over the weekend, which made me wonder why I had not thought of that yet. And to be fair, several writers do a solid job and try to be informed about the subject they cover. The gist of the articles was that the author believed there was a clear sign that the Dolphins' front office may not be as sold on Tua as their long-term answer despite what they repeatedly claim in public. Maybe they actually think he’s the answer, and this is just him (or perhaps some of us as well) looking for something that is not there, but again, I had not thought of it until I saw someone else say it.

Some believe that the team signed Zach Wilson due to his possible untapped talent that he was assumed to have when he was drafted back in 2021 as the second overall pick. I don’t know about that, and while it's possible, I think the idea is that they just believed that he was the best option to be a backup at a somewhat reasonable price is more likely. There’s also the rumor that the team is considering drafting Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillion Gabriel on day three of the draft. Gabriel is a player whose skills are often compared to Tagovailoa’s. Some have even speculated that they will target Gabriel to prepare him to take over after a couple of seasons and send Tua down the road.

The article's main point was that while the Dolphins closed in on free agency and began restructuring various players' contracts, they decided not to do so with the biggest deal on the books, Tua’s colossal deal that he signed just last offseason. Why would they pass on reworking the deal that would have easily given them the most additional money to spend in free agency? Why would they not kick some of that money down the road if they planned on him being in Miami for a long time? Maybe they were not planning on him being their long-term starter, or perhaps they were again in a wait-and-see position.

There is the possibility that they felt like they had to give him a deal to keep him happy while also giving themselves the ability to wait to see if he could stay healthy for at least a couple of seasons straight. Given how the deal is structured, it also keeps the possibility of being able to walk away from him after the 2026 season in their back pocket. Tua didn't even manage to stay healthy for the first two games of the 2024 season, sending him to IR for over a month. I don’t care what the front office’s stance was on Tua, how good they think he is, or how much they love him as a person or player. There’s no chance that the incident did not make them wonder if they had made the correct decision by handing him the big deal in the preceding off-season. I’m reasonably sure that most of us thought it the second it happened.

If nothing is altered, Tua’s cap hit this coming season is $39,181,294. The only way the team could shed him before this impending season without incurring a giant dead cap hit that would cost much more than keeping him would be to trade him post-June 1st. The same applies to the following season. If the team were going to move on him at some point and could not trade him, it would be best to do so post Junee 1st in 2027, where his dead money would only be 8.4 million versus the 45 million they would save against the cap. If they had reworked his contract, it would have pushed more money into the 2027 season.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is: Do you think the team is positioning themselves to move on from Tua as soon as financially viable? If not, do you think they should be planning to move on ASAP? If so, do you think they should not be looking to move on from him, as he’s the long-term answer we have been looking for all this time?
