News Dolphins Team Notes

Lot of moving pieces here for Miami. The Slowik hire is interesting - that 2023 season with Stroud was legitimately impressive, but you can't ignore how things fell apart in Houston. The predictable play-calling criticism is concerning, especially for a team that's struggled offensively. Hopefully working under McDaniel for a year gave him some new ideas to incorporate.

The staff overhaul makes sense with the new regime. Bringing in Downard from Green Bay is a solid move - that Packers secondary has been pretty good, and having someone who knows how Hafley and Sullivan operate should help with the transition.

As for the QB situation, I think the fan takes in that thread are pretty reasonable. Ewers getting a shot makes sense from a cost perspective, and if he flames out, you're looking at a better draft position for what should be a stronger 2027 class. The Willis option is intriguing if the price is right - his sample size is small but he's shown flashes. The mobility element would at least give defenses something different to prepare for.

The cap situation sounds brutal though. That potential $118 million in dead money is absolutely crippling. Hard to see how they make any significant moves in free agency with those numbers hanging over them.

Should be an interesting offseason to watch unfold. Curious to see what direction they go at 11 - BPA or do they reach for a QB if someone they like is there?

Phinsider Question/Discussion Of The Day: What Needs Addressing First Edition

gettyimages-2245505350.jpg

With another season behind us and yet another rebuild underway for our Miami Dolphins, much of the discussion surrounding the roster is centered on the quarterback. Focusing on the quarterback or lack thereof is, of course, fair given that it’s the most important position on the roster and some might say the position that got the former front office and coaching staff sent on down the road in the first place. But what about beyond that singular position? There’s zero chance that much of the discussion about players going forward centers on the quarterback. But what else should the front office and scouts be focused on finding for this team?

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

After the quarterback, which position(s) do you want to see this new front office focus on adding to and or improving immediately before heading into next season? Basically, outside of quarterback, which are the positions on this roster that need the most immediate upgrade if this team has any hope of competing next season?

Jeff Hafley continues to retool coaching staff – The Splash Zone 1/28/26

imagn-28060241.jpg

new_splash_zone.jpg

Jeff Hafley has been busy assembling his coaching staff since being hired as the Miami Dolphins head coach last week. Bobby Slowik was promoted to offensive coordinator, while Chris Tabor was hired to oversee special teams. Defensive coordinator has not been announced yet, but a name has been rumored. Sean Duggan who is currently the Green Bay Packers linebackers coach is expected to be offered the position as soon as Anthony Weaver’s head coach search concludes. Duggan will not be calling the defensive plays as Hafley has already confirmed he will be doing that on gamedays.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Dolphins center Aaron Brewer named finalist for NFL Protector of the Year Award

gettyimages-2250156875.jpg

Every year, the National Football Leagues gives out prestigious accolades for skill position players and impact defenders — but in 2025, the big men up front are finally getting the recognition they deserve in the form of the first-ever Protector of the Year Award which will be given annually to the NFL’s best offensive lineman.

Among the finalists is one of the Dolphins’ best offensive players — center Aaron Brewer.

Brewer was named one of just six finalists for the award — joining Creed Humphrey of the Kansas City Chiefs, Garett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz of the Denver Broncos, Joe Thuney of the Chicago Bears, and Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions.

While being one of the most egregious snubs for the Pro Bowl this season, Brewer was named an Associated Press Second-Team All-Pro for his stellar 2025 campaign in Miami. The Chiefs’ Humphrey took home First-Team honors.

The award will be given out — along with many others, including NFL Most Valuable Player — on Thursday, February 5th at the league’s annual award show — NFL Honors.

While being nominated and named a finalist is an honor in and of itself, winning would surely be a massive feather in the cap of Brewer (who is heading into the final year of his 3-year, $21 million deal with the Dolphins).

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Do You Think They Got It Right This Time Edition

gettyimages-2257616265.jpg

We have all been here before. For those of us like me who have been fans of the team longer than many of you have been alive, we have relived this whole scene more times than I can count since we saw the Miami Dolphins send the great Don Shula off into retirement. Jimmy Johnson was a solid hire following Shula, but his tenure did not last long enough, and ever since then, it’s mostly just been pain for us, the fans. More recently, it seems as if the people with all the power prefer the first-time head coach. I assumed that this time might be different, but I assumed wrong.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

Do you think that the ownership has finally got things right with their latest hire of Jeff Hafley, another first-time head coach, or do you think they again made the wrong choice and that we will just be right back here in the next four or five years? If you believe Hafley was the correct choice, why, and if not, which direction should this team have gone in?

What You The Fan Want Addressed With The Miami Dolphins Roster First

With our Miami Dolphins preparing for yet another reset, I asked the following question this past week:

After the quarterback, which position(s) do you want to see this new front office focus on adding to and or improving immediately before heading into next season? Basically, outside of quarterback, which are the positions on this roster that need the most immediate upgrade if this team has any hope of competing next season?

Please share your thoughts and answers in the comments section below-

MIAMI235 wants what we’ve all been yelling for for a very long time.

Offensive Line……my usual answer!

madcitydave is looking past the players to the next set of coaches.

How soon until we find out about Anthony Weaver? I would like to see Miami pursue Jim Leonhard if they don’t retain Weaver.

TheRoo1 is concerned with the team’s O-line and secondary and wants the team to select the BPA in the draft.

The O line, db’s and generally,,,,,

BPA

CluelessNFLfan has a list of wants and needs.

So many holes to fill but here goes in no particular order.

Offense: RT, big physical WR to pair with Waddle, a complete TE

Defense: CB, S, LB

Of course this may all change depending on what JES does with the players currently on the roster

Luvs2drnk expects the focus to be on defense this offseason.

I would venture to guess the defense will be the top priority this season and the offense next season when they are more likely to know what their QB situation will be.

cyberflea is actually excited for the draft now that Grier has been shown the door.

QB is the obvious biggest need. I’m thinking as it now, Ewers will be the starter on a cheap 7th rd rookie contract this coming season although Sully will draft a QB sometime in the draft despite the weak class.

My guess is that defense will be the Dolphins 1st rd pick, either Edge or DB. I’m pretty psyched about the draft for the first time in a long time now that our super genius Chris Grier is finally booted out the door which should have been done years ago.

Dave G hopes the new regime does all they can to drum up some more draft picks as the cap will keep the team from building via free agency.

As we know, this will be built from the inside out. This is the order of need IMO.

1. OL

2. PASS RUSH

3. CB

4.WR

5. SAFETY

With the old regime completely destroying any hope for free agency, considering our rediculous cap situation, we will be forced to start this thing very slowly by only using the draft. With that said, we need to trade anyone we can get draft capital for that isn’t part of the future of this team. In my perfect world, we would have Achane, Waddle, and 28 draft picks. Hope this regime sees things the same.

Dolfanjoe wants more picks, damn it.

Obtain more draft picks, because we need players all over the board ! Name a position other than running back that we do not need improvement on ? And if we get a good trade for Achane draft day we will need help there also !

Alpha6 is the first to point out the defensive line.

Which are the positions on this roster that need the most immediate upgrade if this team has any hope of competing next season?

Two immediate for me:

D-line & WR.

I realize all the rest, but for me these two areas are first…

Left Shark sounds like a trenches guy.

Build from the inside out– big and tough all weather players.

That’s our ten random comments this evening. It seems, taken as a whole, that the fan base believes the entire roster needs to be addressed, aside from maybe running back. If you missed our original post, feel free to add your thoughts and answers to the comments section below. As always, thank you to each of you who takes the time to read and respond to our Phinsider Question Of The Day posts.

2025 was a miserable year for the Miami Dolphins and their fans as it resulted in the firings of both general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel. One of the main issues was the play from the Dolphins quarterbacks. Tua Tagovailoa saw most of the action and had his worst year as a professional. He was benched with three weeks left in the season in favor for Quinn Ewers. The offense got a little jolt from the seventh round rookie out of Texas and should have the chance to compete for the starting spot this upcoming season. With the Dolphins cap

NFL salary cap increasing to $305.7 million for 2026

gettyimages-2256985592.jpg

The NFL is increasing the salary cap for all teams to $305.7 million in 2026, as per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The NFL informed clubs today it is projecting a 2026 salary cap in the range of $301.2 million to $305.7 million per club, per source.

That would represent another significant jump from this year’s $279.2 million cap number, and nearly $100M than the $208.2M cap in 2022. pic.twitter.com/3Mr146H01C

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 30, 2026

The NFL salary cap has increased nearly every year over the past decade, with a slight decline in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This year, the salary cap jumps from $279 million in 2025, to over $300 million in 2026. The exact number isn’t confirmed yet, but expect it to fall within the range of $300 million to $305 million, as Pelissero reports. On average, over the past decade, the cap has increased by about 7% each year.

NFL Salary Cap History

  • 2026: $301.2 million – $305.7 million
  • 2025: $279.2 million
  • 2024: $255.4 million
  • 2023: $224.8 million
  • 2022: $208.2 million
  • 2021: $182.5million
  • 2020: $198.2 million
  • 2019: $188.2 million
  • 2018: $177.2 million
  • 2017: $167 million
  • 2016: $155.2 million

As it relates to the Dolphins, this is good news. The Dolphins are well over the salary cap, and are currently projected to have -$30 million in cap space in 2026 (per OverTheCap). An increase in the projected salary cap certainly helps the Dolphins get under that number, but there’s still a long way to go. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill will almost certainly be a post-June 1st cut, which would save the team some money. Linebacker Bradley Chubb, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and guard Austin Jackson are the next three highest earners on the team, and all three of them may not be returning to the Dolphins next year due to financial constraints.

— FinsXtra (@FinsXtra) January 29, 2026

Of course, only general manager John-Eric Sullivan knows what the Dolphins will do. It’s certainly possible that the Dolphins bring back Hill, Chubb, Fitzpatrick, and Jackson, and save money another way. However, don‘t be surprised to see some notable exists this offseason either. One way or another, the Dolphins need to get under the cap.

Here's the non-guaranteed cash due to players on the list compared to effective cap space.

Vikings & Commanders really stand out for potential roster churn, followed by the Dolphins & Cardinals. pic.twitter.com/2p0fNkcOJW

— Nick Korte (@nickkorte) January 8, 2026

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Tua Tagovailoa, who is far and away the biggest earner on the team, owed nearly $40 million in base salary for 2026. However, due to the structure of the contract, the Dolphins are essentially on the hook for his contract in 2026 and 2027, and would lose nearly $90 million in dead money if they were to release him.

But for now, Tua, along with his high-earning teammates, are all still contractually obligated to play for the Dolphins next season.

Did The Miami Dolphins Get It Right? Your Take!

gettyimages-2257616044.jpg

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JANUARY 22: Miami Dolphins General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, and Head Coach Jeff Hafley pose for a photo during a press conference at Baptist Health Training Complex on January 22, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Carmen Mandato/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The 2025-2026 Miami Dolphins season ended where it has far too often in recent times, with the last game of the regular season. With another disappointing season behind us, what many of us knew was likely coming did. The ownership of our Miami Dolphins decided to fire both the general manager and the head coach, and with that, I asked the following question:

Do you think that the ownership has finally got things right with their latest hire of Jeff Hafley, another first-time head coach, or do you think they again made the wrong choice and that we will just be right back here in the next four or five years? If you believe Hafley was the correct choice, why, and if not, which direction should this team have gone in?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

Phin is the Word believes it was a better swing than some of the past ones.

RE: GM and Coach, I think they got it right-er than the last personages on those jobs.

AquaAndOrange is relieved that Grier is gone and doesn’t really care how strange anyone looks, so long as they can pull off the job.

Well, they got rid of grier. That was definitely the right decision. I’m going to actually wait until I see how Hafley does before I go all chicken little. I don’t care about his hair or his forehead. I didn’t care about McD’s shoes or pants or watch either. Those are just ad hominem (fallacy) attacks. I just want my team to win games. They haven’t even started the season yet. We had to suffer through griers ineptness for how many years ? I think I’ll give the new regime a chance. Could they honestly be any worse than what we’ve been through already ? I think we’ve reached rock bottom and the only way to go is up.

MiamiItaliano is confident that they got it right, but is still a bit reserved because it was Ross pulling the levers.

I like Sully’s strategy of building in the trenches on both sides of the ball. If you give Hafley a monster D-line, he will find ways to throw opposing QBs off their game and make secondary coverages easier in the process. Hafley trusts Slowik to get the most out of the offense and Sully should fix the pass blocking problems with a solid O-line. I’m optimistic that Ross made two good decisions. But, it is Ross, so all fans should wait and see if the Dolphins become a competent football team.

Lone_Star88 believes we must give the new regime at least a year or two of grace as they rebuild, but we won’t know whether they made the right choice for at least three or four years.

Did they get it right? That’s the question on one can answer, not yet. We realistically won’t be able to answer that for 3-4 years. There’s so much that has to be fixed that years 1-2 will be more about cleaning up the mess from the prior administration’s mistakes. He wasn’t my choice, but I also don’t know what candidates were actually a real possibility. JES seems to be the right choice, so for now we just have to defer to his judgement. Haf seems to have allot of interest in the league and a very good reputation, so we’ll see if he can step up and lead an entire locker room and not just one side of the ball. Again, he’s gonna need a whole bunch of grace his first couple of years while he and JES get this mess sorta out, so we all need to keep that in mind when we start criticizing every move they make this offseason and then during the regular season.

Spok507 says it wasn’t his choice, but doesn’t hate it either.

Not who I wanted, but I don’t dislike the hires. If anything, they should be able to bring some toughness and shift some of the narratives. So in that respect, it’s something we haven’t had in a long time. I’m willing to give Hafley a chance to see what he can do and who ha can bring on board. So I’m willing to give them a shot. Let’s see who they bring on staff and how they manage their first draft. Then we’ll have a better idea of whether or not they can build something positive here.

Molly Polly II believes they might have gotten it right.

Appears to me Hafley has earned this opportunity, I have absolutely no reason to doubt his ability to significantly move our beloved Miami Dolphins in positive direction! Am looking forward to seeing good things. Matter of fact, the Chargers game this coming season better sell out!!! Harbaugh, McDaniel, welcome to Miami!!! 🤣 LETS GO FINZ NATION 🐬🐬🐬

NeenerWhacker is in on the new GM but not so much the new HC.

I like JES. I think he was the right hire.

But I don’t think Hafley has the stuff to be head coach. Another true coordinator hire just like the last 2. I can see how Haf aced the interview process. Speaks well (compared to uhm, uh, um) says he wants to do the opposite of all the things we’ve been criticized for years for.

I just don’t see the value in having your head coach call defensive plays. Although McDonald vs Mcvay was pretty cool last week on that final drive. Hope I’m wrong about Haf

ncumpire51 seems completely on board.

Yes,I have no issue with the hire of sully and haff as they say they like to be called. Don Shula was a defensive backs coach before becoming Baltimore’s HC, and went on to having a record of 71-23-4 for the Colts. So it can work out for a first time HC with no prior HC experience. You can’t base it on who we’ve had in the past. Both our GM and HC came from a winning organization and worked hard to get to the point to where they have this opportunity. I watched the 57 minute introductory press conference and loved every minute of it.They’re the complete opposite of what we just had. If they can instill the toughness and back up what they say they will bring to this franchise I’m all for it. Let’s all give these men a chance and see what our beloved Dolphins play like before we bury them.

Dolphinsfan2021 isn’t so sure, especially about some of the assistant coaches brought on thus far.

I think Hafley was a good pick, maybe not the best option, but hopefully he turns out to be a solid head coach. Some concerns about his assistants though. There are a lot of good coaches out there and I think you have to put aside bringing in all your buddies to bring in the best assistants. So far the assistants seem ok, thought some better options were out there but willing to see how they work out. Highly against Hackett. He is not a good coach and has bad track record, dont understand that hiring. He has made teams worse everywhere he went. So not a good pick when Dolphins most important fix will be at QB position. Hafley’s career will be tied to his QB pick the next 3 years and QB coach and OC. So not off to good start. Getting the sense team will be back to days of Dave Wanstedt with good defense no QB and questionable offense. Let’s hope Hafley is the next McDonald, and the GM pulls some great moves and hits on draft picks. Otherwise could be 4 years and done again.

JKBMia believes that picking quality guys from a quality organization is a solid start.

I think JES was a good hire and I think we’re picking quality people up from a quality organization and they’re saying all the right things.

Hafley wasn’t my first choice, but it would stand to reason that we had a completely different group of people making the decision this time, and even though it wasn’t what I wanted, I tend to have trust in those people who were in charge.

I do have hope, but I think it would be ridiculous to say at this point that they got it right.

Well, that’s our random ten comments for this evening. If you would like to see all of the original comments, you can see the original post HERE. As always, I would like to thank each of you who takes the time most evenings to read and answer our Phinsider Question Of The Day.
