NFL Week 5 odds: Winners picks for 49ers vs. Rams on Thursday Night Football

gettyimages-2231427082.jpg

The NFL calendar is on to Week 5, with the San Francisco 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams for the Thursday Night Football kickoff to the week. Both teams enter the game with a 3-1 record, tied for the lead at the top of the NFC West. Tonight’s game also marks the second-straight NFC West rivalry game on Thursday night, following last week’s meeting between the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.

The NFC West is tight early this year, with the Rams, 49ers, and Seahawks all holding identical 3-1 records while the Cardinals are just a game back at 2-2. Could tonight’s game spark a run from either the 49ers or the Rams?

Throughout the season, our contributors predict the winner for each game on the schedule. We primarily focus on the outright winner of each game from Week 1 through the Super Bowl, but we can also pick against the spread. Adjusting Dolphins offense without Tyreek Hill – The Splash Zone 10/3/25

new_splash_zone.jpg

Tyreek Hill is done for the season and it’s a major blow to a Miami Dolphins offense that heavily relied on the Pro-Bowl receiver. Even when Hill wasn’t going to be part of the play, just his presence alone made defenses adjust to him being on the field. Many believed this was going to be Hill’s last season with the Dolphins and we are going to get an early look as to what that offense was going to look like without him. The hope is Jaylen Waddle can step right into that top receiver role and he has proven plenty of times he is capable of that task. It’s terrible the injury happened, but it is going to be so interesting see how the Dolphins game plan their offense and how opposing defenses line up now.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Panthers starting running back to miss game against Miami Dolphins

gettyimages-1236875065.jpg

Friday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Carolina Panthers starting running back Chuba Hubbard is expected to miss the team’s Week Five game due to a lingering calf injury.

#Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard, who has been dealing with a calf injury the last couple of weeks and hasn't practiced this week, is expected to miss Sunday's game against the #Dolphins, per me and @MikeGarafolo. Rico Dowdle is the team's backup. pic.twitter.com/alRA3uQaQV

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 3, 2025

Which team are they playing against on Sunday? That’s right — our Miami Dolphins.

Hubbard’s absence figures to be a big blow to the Panthers’ offensive hopes, as Miami’s defense allows 5.1 yards per carry to opposing ball carriers — the fourth worst mark in the entire National Football League. The 632 yards the Dolphins have surrendered on the ground through four games is the third worst figure in the league as well. Only four teams have given up more rushing touchdowns than the Dolphins have this season (5).

The Panthers will presumably turn to Rico Dowdle to handle the lion’s share of carries for the club. Dowdle has mustered just 83 yards on 28 carries this year (3.0 yards per carry), while scoring just once in four games. However, last year, as lead back for the Dallas Cowboys, Dowdle had a breakout season in which he carried the ball 235 times for 1,079 yards (4.6 yards per carry). He added 39 receptions for Dallas in 2024 as well.

Anthony Weaver — Miami’s defensive coordinator — has stressed that his team needs to play with more “violence” this season. We will see if the heavy hitters come out to play on Sunday when the Dolphins travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to battle the 1-3 Panthers.

Dolphins vs. Panthers Week 5: Where can I watch?

gettyimages-2237804891.jpg

The Miami Dolphins head up the East Coast this weekend to face the Carolina Panthers. Miami, coming off its first win of the 2025 NFL season, will look to continue to battle back toward a .500 record while adjusting to being without star wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The Panthers are hoping to avoid back-to-back losses to the AFC East, having dropped their Week 4 game to the Dolphins’ division rivals, the New England Patriots.

This game is not exactly a marquee matchup, with both teams sitting at 1-3 on the year. The FOX broadcast area for the game only reinforces the lack of a draw to watch Sunday’s contest.

The plan for the game includes only South Florida, the Carolinas, and Hawaii. Most of the country will be getting the Dallas Cowboys at New York Jets game.

The map below, via 506Sports.com, emphasizes the lack of desire for the Dolphins at Panthers game on local affiliates around the country.

The Script – How the Dolphins can beat the Panthers in Week 5

gettyimages-1737698959.jpg

The Miami Dolphins enter Week 5 at 1-3, facing a less-than-formidable opponent in the 1-3 Carolina Panthers. After an 0-3 start to the season, the Dolphins will want to use the momentum from their Week 4 victory over the New York Jets to improve themselves to 2-3.

The Panthers, meanwhile, are looking to make a statement on home turf, and start their journey towards a winning season, which would be their first since 2017.

As always, this is the NFL. These games are often decided by nothing more than a few inches here and there. With that said, here’s a look at one way the Dolphins can win, and one where they can lose.

The Winning Script: Early Score Gets The Win

For the Dolphins, their path to winning is simple: start fast, and don’t look back.

The Panthers will be without lead running back Chuba Hubbard on Sunday, stripping them of their best option in the backfield. That leaves the onus squarely on Bryce Young’s arm to win the game for Carolina. If the Dolphins score early, they’ll tilt the game script in their favor, forcing Carolina and Young into obvious passing situations. Force them into 2nd-and-10, 3rd-and-9, 4th-and-6.

On obvious passing downs, as weak as Miami’s defense has been this season, I just don’t trust Bryce Young to deliver. The earlier the Dolphins can put points on the board, the sooner they can dictate tempo and keep the Panthers chasing the game.

Score first, make Bryce Young beat you from the pocket, and the Dolphins probably leave Sunday with a win.

The Losing Script: You Get A First Down, You Get A First Down, Everyone Gets A First Down!

Of course, the Dolphins can just as easily lose this game. One way that happens is if Miami can’t get off the field on third down.

The Dolphins’ third-down defense has been one of the worst in the NFL this year, allowing opposing offenses to convert on 51.1% of their third downs, second worst in the NFL.

Fun stat (that might interest only me): The Dolphins offense is second-best in the NFL on third down; the Dolphins defense is second-worst in the NFL on third down.

— Alain Poupart (@PoupartNFL) October 2, 2025

Their inability to get off the field has killed them in key moments so far this season, and the same could happen on Sunday.

Those 3rd downs I spoke about earlier? Well, if those 3rd downs look more like 3rd-and-2 and less like 3rd-and-9, I can see the Panthers being able to extend drives and keep Bryce Young in rhythm with short passes. Even without Hubbard, Carolina doesn’t need to gash Miami with the run; they just need to stay ahead of the chains. A couple of five-yard completions here, a broken tackle there, and suddenly Miami’s defense is sucking wind while the Panthers chew up both time-of-possession and momentum.

If Miami allows “death by a thousand third downs,” they’ll hand Carolina every chance to steal this one at home.

Final Prediction

Dolphins 24-20 Panthers.

For the second week in a row, I’m predicting a #FinsWin.

I don’t see Bryce Young posing much of a threat to the Dolphins without Chubba Hubbard next to him, and I think Miami’s offense should get off to a hot start at the hands of De’Von Achane and Jaylen Waddle. The latter should be due for a big game with the unfortunate loss of Tyreek Hill for the season, so watch out for that.

Which script do you see playing out on Sunday? Do you think the Dolphins can grab back-to-back wins? Let us know in the comments below!
