Miami Dolphins’ Most Valuable Player | Week Three | Thunder in South Florida

gettyimages-2236326164.jpg

The Miami Dolphins dropped their third straight contest to open the 2025 NFL season — certainly not the start anyone hoped for.

When your team looks headed for a lost season, expectations shift. For me personally, I want to see how the young players on Miami’s roster perform throughout the year in order to assess if they’re building blocks for the future. One such youngster had himself a heck of a game on Thursday night, and has earned more playing time as the season unfolds as well as earning Week Three’s Most Valuable ‘Phin award from yours truly!

Miami Dolphins Week Three MVP – Ollie Gordon II

Ollie Gordon was a sixth-round selection of the Miami Dolphins in the 2025 NFL Draft after having an accomplished college career. His play during the preseason opened a lot of eyes around the league, however his usage during the first couple of weeks of the season had plenty of folks questioning why Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel wasn’t utilizing Gordon’s skillset more.

That changed on Thursday night when Gordon was fed the ball 9 times, allowing him to run for 38 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and his first touchdown as a professional. More importantly, Gordon picked up multiple first downs in short-yardage situations — something the Dolphins have struggled with during Mike McDaniel’s entire tenure as the head coach in South Florida. Gordon was Pro Football Focus’ highest graded Dolphins player on Thursday Night Football (81.2).

Hopefully the former Oklahoma State product’s impressive performance has earned the young ball-carrier more playing time, as a duo of De’Von Achane and Gordon II could provide the Miami Dolphins that speed and power combination needed to succeed in today’s NFL.

The Lions also dropped their week one contest to their divisional foe, the Green Bay Packers, 27-13, before returning last week to take down another divisional foe, the Chicago Bears, 52-21. Both teams can move into a tie in their division with a win this evening.

Will the Dolphins get their first win on Monday night – The Splash Zone 9/23/25

gettyimages-2192544692.jpg

new_splash_zone.jpg

The Miami Dolphins are among six teams that have still not won a game this season yet. The Dolphins have lost to two undefeated teams in the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills and should have won their game against the New England Patriots. The Dolphins upcoming schedule eases up a bit with a matchup against the winless New York Jets on Monday night and it will be interesting to see where the Dolphins rank after that meeting. The Dolphins still wouldn’t be a top team and if they end up losing that one, it will probably be time to begin evaluation about the future.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

A win isn’t the only thing the Dolphins and their Week 4 opponent, the Jets, are chasing a breakthrough in as they enter their primetime showdown
Maybe if the Dolphins can find a few of these, it can help make those missing wins in 2025 a little easier to come by…

Fins Up, Fins Down | Week Three

gettyimages-2235069189.jpg

We’ve all had a little time to cool down from Thursday night’s Miami Dolphins defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills — and it’s a good thing we had those couple extra days, because the Dolphins’ 0-3 start is their worst since the dreaded 2019 tank special. The 2025 season has been disappointing, disheartening, discouraging, dismaying, depressing, distressing and so distinctly Dolphins, that many fans have already begun looking at highly rated college prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft — a draft in which Miami may have a top-5 pick if the team continues on its dismal downward spiral.

Speaking of incoming rookies, today’s Fins Up, Fins Down article features a pair of 2025 draft picks — one who is performing quite well, and one who has plenty of room to grow throughout the rest of the season.

Fins Up

This week’s Fins Up player is Miami’s sixth-round pick from this year’s selection process — running back out of Oklahoma State, Ollie Gordon II.

Gordon carried the ball nine times against the Bills, totaling 38 yards rushing (4.2 yards per carry) and a touchdown. It was Gordon’s highest touch count of his young career, and the 21-year-old certainly made the most out of his opportunity. During head coach Mike McDaniel’s tenure as Dolphins’ head coach, the team has struggled mightily in short yardage situations. Gordon handled three such carries against the Bills, and converted all three chances.

Miami’s primary back — De’Von Achane — isn’t going anywhere, but adding Gordon to the mix will diversify the Dolphins ground game which could prove important as the season rolls on.

Fins Down

This week’s Fins Down player is unfortunately Miami’s first-round selection from this year’s draft — defensive tackle Kenneth Grant out of Michigan.

Grant was Miami’s lowest graded defensive player against the Bills according to Pro Football Focus — earning a 32.7 score. He had just one solo tackle and didn’t record a sack, forced fumble or fumble recovery. In fact, through three games as a member of the Miami Dolphins, Grant has just three solo tackles total and has yet to show up on the stat sheet in any other meaningful way.

The entire Dolphins defense as a whole has struggled mightily this year, so getting too down on Grant at this stage is something I would strongly discourage, however seeing the youngster make an impact against the New York Jets on Monday night would certainly give Miami’s fanbase something positive to talk about during a season where positivity is in short supply.

Miami Dolphins climb in power rankings despite loss to Buffalo Bills

gettyimages-2236177121.jpg

The Miami Dolphins are not having the season people within the organization, as well as the team’s fanbase, hoped for. After losing 31-21 to the Buffalo Bills last Thursday night, the team fell to 0-3 to start the year.

Despite that loss, somehow the Dolphins climbed in the latest power rankings released by Mike Florio and his ProFootballTalk cronies yesterday. Miami had previously been ranked the worst team in the National Football League since before the season started, but after keeping it close against their division foes on Thursday Night Football, the Dolphins went from #32, all the way up to #30 — ranking just ahead of the New Orleans Saints (32) and the Tennessee Titans (31).

Do your thing with these . . . pic.twitter.com/Snc92iCT39

— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) September 23, 2025

The Saints — also winless — dropped their latest game by a score of 44-13 to the Seattle Seahawks. The Titans — once again, also winless — fell to the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 41-20.

The Dolphins will have a chance to continue their power rankings ascension this Monday night when they host the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. The Jets could once again be without their starting quarterback, Justin Fields, as the young player remains out of action while dealing with lingering effects from a concussion suffered in Week Two against the Buffalo Bills.

If the Dolphins are to make a run with the hope of sniffing the playoffs in 2025, the team must start putting things together and stockpiling wins — starting with their Monday night clash against their bitter division rivals, the Jets.

Five Things I Think I Think About the Miami Dolphins – Week 3

imagn-27114703.jpg

They aren’t who we thought they were? I mean. Not as bad as we thought they were.

Sadly, they’re still on the hook.

R.I.P. Dennis Green.

The Dolphins are trending up, sort of

At least Tyreek Hill agrees with me.

Look. I sincerely thought the Fins were looking at a 40+ point blowout loss on Thursday night. The fact that the game was 14-14 at the half, the Dolphins were in it until the end, and they were only really derailed by two major mistakes (Zach Sieler and Tua, please stand up), was wholly unexpected.

Ollie Gordon scored his first career touchdown and looked the part of a power back who can spell De’Von Achane’s speed. Achane was his usual productive self, while both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle found the end zone alongside Gordon. The previously (let’s face it, probably permanently) problematic offensive line surrendered 0 sacks on the evening and the defense even decided to stop Mr. Janu-Alien himself a few times.

Compare that to the absolute joke of a display opening week, the slightly less comical (but still paltry) showing in Week 2, and the team is ever so slowly climbing its way toward being functional.

Is that good enough?

Of course not.

0-3 teams have a 2.5% chance of making the postseason. Not great odds.

The Fins still have problems all over the place. The linebackers looked overmatched, with Tyrel Dodson standing out to me a few different times as someone in the wrong place, doing the wrong thing, even though he racked up a lot of stats by the end. The defense still gave up over 30 points. That’s 3 weeks in a row, but who’s counting?

Me.

I’m counting.

No matter how many silver linings we can dig up or layers of lipstick we can slap on this here pig, the Dolphins still lost and are sitting at 0-3 to start the season.

That said:

Mike McDaniel will last until the Bye Week

One of the main narratives coming into the game against Buffalo was head coach Mike McDaniel’s job security (or lack thereof). If the team laid an egg and/or the players looked like they’d given up the ghost, the theory was that MM could be gone before the return flight plane was loaded.

The Dolphins’ performance in Orchard Park was instead illustrative of a group that still gives a flying fin. My guess is that alone will be enough to buy McDaniel considerable good will with upper management and keep him in charge until the Week 12 Bye.

Counter arguments will point out that the Fins still lost and McDaniel himself spoke out against moral victories. But institutions hesitant to change will take the devil they know more often than not and point to the team’s glacial pace of improvement over the first 3 games as evidence of a massive ship wrestling against the waves to right itself. Comparisons to The Titanic notwithstanding.

Obviously what happens between Week 4 and Week 12 will have more bearing on MM’s employment than one Thursday Night game in Buffalo, but, for now, it appears he’s here a bit longer.

Even though:

Self inflicted wounds still ruled the day

We all saw it.

With 10:20 left in the 4th quarter, the Dolphins’ defense had forced the Bills into a 4th and 7 at their own 49 yard line. Buffalo lined up to punt, about to give the Miami offense the ball back, with the game tied at 21. It would put the Fins in the best position to win they’d seen since an early 7-0 lead.

Instead, Zach ‘Down by the River’ Sieler went for the punt block (undoubtedly and inexplicably requested by his Special Teams coach), carried too far past his blocker, and crashed into the Bills’ punter with the force of 1,000 suns. 15 yard penalty. Automatic 1st down. Ensuing Bills touchdown an absolute certainty. 28-21 Bills.

Fortunately, the Fins were still in the thick of it.

Down just one touchdown, they could easily (relatively) drive down the field for a game tying TD.

We all saw it.

With 3:06 left in the game, it was 1st and 10 for Miami at the Buffalo 21 yard line. A play that looked a little bit designed to drag a defender into the receiver’s path dragged a defender into the receiver’s path, where he nabbed an easy interception on an ill-advised pass from Tua to seal the game for the Bills.

The defender claimed he knew it was coming based on film study. Tua said he’d throw it again 10/10 times. I sadly believe both.

It was a Very Dolphins Way (TM) to lose a game. Speaking of Tua, however:

Tua and MM are secret Phinsider fans

Last week we hammered Tua for his lack of mobility and inability to extend plays and turn them into positives. Against the Bills, he looked as if he took those words to heart. While he still looks stiff and (to my eyes) like a guy suffering from an ever worsening hip injury, he managed to evade pressure all day, avoiding even a single sack, and keep his eyes downfield to find openings like a quarterback of the modern era would.

So Tua, since you’re reading this: “Next week, just do all the good stuff you did this week, minus the interception.” — a literal genius.

Mikey Mac, I know we have your ear too.

We bagged on MM for his poor operation and ceaseless pre-snap penalties. On Thursday, those were conspicuously absent. He even took on the stretch goal of calling a balanced game, with 25 rushes to 34 passes, while guiding the offense toward moving the ball respectably.

So Mike, since you’re also reading this: “Next week, just do all the good stuff you did this week, but call more runs when they’re working and throw the ball beyond the line of scrimmage more than behind it.” — basically Einstein reincarnate.

I’ll make the bold assumption that the whole staff is here by now, so Anthony Weaver: when the opponent is 12/12 against zone defense, stop calling zone defense. Like. Come on, man. If the broadcast team knows it, you have to know it. So just. Don’t do that.

Thanks.

Weekly Overreaction: Miami will blow out the Jets in Week 4

Gotta get those tasty controversy clicks somehow, right?

The Jets are 0-2 as of this writing. I suspect they’ll be 0-3 once they’ve had the chance.

The Fins are at home. They’re coming off of their best outing so far. They have a mini Bye between a Thursday night game and a Monday night game.

Let’s just be dumb about it and say Miami 34-10 over the Jets.

Is that based almost entirely on empty hope?

Is there any other way to root for the Dolphins?

Do you think Mike McDaniel stays to Week 12 or beyond? Do you think Miami can beat the Jets? Do you really want to hurt me? Dream in the comments below.

Miami Dolphins fan confidence poll – Week 4

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Dolphins fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Miami Dolphins have started the 2025 season with an embarrassing three-straight losses. The team admittedly looked more competitive in last week’s Thursday Night Fooball game against the Buffalo Bills, but an 0-3 start to the year does not exactly fire up the fanbase.

Our SB Nation Reacts fan confidence poll returns today to get an idea of how you are feeling about the Dolphins. The last two weeks have set, then re-set, the all-time low mark in our survey, with the Week 2 survey falling to just five percent of the fans thinking Miami is headed in the right direction, then the Week 3 poll results falling another percentage point to just four percent.

Will there be a rebound after the team was able to compete with the Bills for much of the game? Will the fan confidence continue to fall with the loss? Vote below and head to the comments to discuss.

Tagovailoa: I wouldn’t say I’m playing my best football

gettyimages-2236326413.jpg

After losing three consecutive games to open the 2025 NFL season — including back-to-back divisional contests — the Miami Dolphins find themselves with an 0-3 record heading into a pivotal matchup on Monday Night Football against the visiting New York Jets.

One reason why the Dolphins are underperforming is the fact that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s individual play has been significantly lacking compared to his prior seasons under head coach Mike McDaniel.

Through three contests, Miami’s quarterback is averaging just 191.6 passing yards per game. He has thrown a total of five touchdowns — but has also thrown four interceptions as well. In addition to those interceptions, he also has a fumble lost on the season, giving him five turnovers overall.

Speaking with the South Florida media after practice on Thursday, Tagovailoa had this to say about his recent struggles:

I haven’t played anywhere near the standard that I’ve played in years past and knowing the standard that I can play to. It starts with me — with the offense, getting our guys going. And then the defense being able to feed off of that as well, right? I wouldn’t say that I’ve been playing my best football yet.

Tagovailoa was paid handsomely following his stellar 2023 season — a season in which he led the league in passing yards with 4,624. Since then, his play has diminished.

Miami’s quarterback mentioned injuries taking their toll when asked why his game is different now than when he was starring at the University of Alabama.

One of the biggest changes and differences that I’ve felt [since my time at Alabama] would have been some of the surgeries that I’ve had… I can kind of feel some of the residuals within my ankles. I was running a little different when I was at Alabama and it’s just not the same [now]. I think that’s normal given the surgeries and everything that comes with the sport.

Regardless of how Tagovailoa’s body feels, the Miami Dolphins need wins. No excuses. They’ll look to get back to their winning ways against the Jets on Monday night.

The Seahawks began the season by dropping their game one to the 49ers, 17-13. Seattle has since rebounded by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-17 and the New Orleans Saints 44-13. On the other side of the ball, Arizona also suffered its only loss to San Francisco last week, 16-15. Tua Tagovailoa snaps back at former NFL MVP Cam Newton

gettyimages-2235574557.jpg

Speaking with the South Florida media following practice on Thursday, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa admitted he isn’t playing his best football to start the 2025 campaign. Tagovailoa is absolutely correct — as the passer has already accounted for five turnovers in just three games. The Dolphins are 0-3 and their lackluster quarterback play is a main reason why.

Last week, 2015 NFL MVP and Super Bowl starting quarterback, Cam Newton, addressed Tagovailoa’s struggles in relation to the quarterback’s big money contract he signed following the 2023 NFL season.

In this case, it should be more money, more expectations. … What you’re being paid, what you’re asked to do, what you have the capability of — from one quarterback to the other, I look at the situation like, come on, dawg. Especially when you’ve got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that other quarterbacks wish they had.

Tagovailoa was asked about Newton’s comments and clapped back at the former Carolina Panthers passer.

Well, anybody can play quarterback in this league then. I want to see anybody on the streets come and play quarterback,” Tagovailoa said. “Cam is doing his thing for sure, but I think it’s easier to be able to hold a clicker and talk about it that way or talk about what someone else is doing wrong when you’re not going out and having to do the same as them.”

Miami’s signal caller continued: “I think it’s easy to do that, I think anybody can do that. I don’t think anybody can play quarterback.”

While Tagovailoa was, for the most part, talking about analysts and fans who have never suited up in the league, it was strange to hear him question Newton’s ability to handle playing quarterback in the NFL, as the former #1 overall pick in the 2011 National Football League Draft had a highly successful 11-year professional career.

For Tagovailoa and the rest of the Miami Dolphins, the harsh criticisms will most certainly continue until the players and coaches silence the noise by winning football games. Until then, talk is just that — talk. It’s time to let the Dolphins’ play on the field do the talking for them.

The Miami Dolphins defense hasn’t been great, but that was to be expected with a secondary that lost plenty of talent this past offseason. The Dolphins offense on the other hand was expected to carry this team, but has been on the struggle bus since the season began. Mike McDaniel has been under fire, since he calls the offensive plays but had a pretty good game plan against the Buffalo Bills last week. Now eyes are turning towards QB Tua Tagovailoa, who just hasn’t looked like his normal self out there. We always knew there was limitations to Tua’s game, but the quick passing attack hid those blemishes.

Your Jets @ Dolphins Predictions/Players You Would Steal

gettyimages-2192559599.jpg

With our Miami Dolphins set to take on the New York Jets at home this coming Monday evening, I asked the normal pre-game questions.

Which Jets player(s) would you steal to be placed on the current Dolphins roster and why? Also, what is your prediction or are your predictions for the upcoming Monday evening game between our Phins and the Jets?

Below are some of your thougths and answers:

Dolfan88 sounds cranky, but we still love you, Bill.

Don’t know who is on the jests and don’t care. Don’t want them!

heatforlife wonders why Bill doesn’t want Fireman Joe Ed back.

fireman joe ?

SuperG! reminds us of a time when Ed was making better fandom choices for himself.

Fireman Ed. He started as a Dolphins fan and switched to be a Jests fan when he was 10 years old.

finfanfromsiam is with Bill!

View Link

PA phinphan doesn’t want any Jets players, but we all want some damn secondary help.

Not that I want any Jests on the Dolphins, to me, the obvious choice would be Gardner.

Some choose violence. glen55 prefers sarcasm.

Gardner would have a decent chance of starting for the Fins if he really worked at it.

SlayerNation1 wants to bring JT’s kid home and sees Miami finally pulling one out. If only we could sign every former Dolphins player currently playing in the NFL, it would be a significant upgrade for the roster.

Take JT’s Son for immediate upgrade to TE.

MIA 27 – NYJ 24 OT , or maybe the reverse

I can see the Jets winning, but ultimately settled on MIA eking out the win which they will rue in the end as NYJ beat them out in drafting position based in this game. NYJ draft Sellers who, in two to three seasons, becomes Josh Allen 2.0 in the division.

Waller, first catch fumbles. He hasn’t had an NFL pop in nearly 2 calendar years and is injured and doubtful He really wants to play.

Louie the lobster also wants an upgrade at corner but does not see the PHins winning this one.

Gardner

23-24 Jets

If the Patsies can beat us at home, so can the Jets.

heatforlife, in response to Louie, is not a fan of Gadner, but I would argue he’s still an upgrade at this point.

he holds every play

I find it frustrating when things reach this point with our Miami Dolphins, where hope for the current season has largely vanished among the vast majority of fans. At the same time, this organization should not expect anything else from a long-time, emotionally battered fan base. Anyway… Please join us tomorrow for an early morning game thread featuring the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers from Dublin, Ireland, followed by all our usual live threads for games throughout the day and Sunday Night Football. The NFL’s Sunday slate of games kicks off with an early international game from Dublin, Ireland. The 2-1 Pittsburgh Steelers will serve as the hosting team for this game. Pittsburgh narrowly escaped week one with a win over the New York Jets 34-32. Week two was worse for the Steelers, as they dropped their game to the Seattle Seahawks, 31-17. Pittsburgh again returned to the win column last week with its 21-14 victory over the New England Patriots.

The Minnesota Vikings enter this game also with a 2-1 record. Week one saw the Vikings defeat their divisional rival, the Chicago Bears, 27-24. Also, as with the Steelers, the Vikings lost their Week Two game. The Vikings dropped that game to the Atlanta Falcons 22-6. Again, like Pittsburgh, the Vikings walked away with their second victory in week three, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in blowout fashion, 48-10.
