Great Lakes Loons pitch seven-inning no-hitter

In the Dodgers’ minor league games on June, we have a seven-inning no-hitter, two players with two-homer days, and Chris Campos shows how it’s done with a seven-inning start for the win.

Player of the day​

Eriq Swan pitched six no-hit innings in his best professional performance so far. Needing 84 pitches (50 strikes), Swan matched his career high with seven strikeouts. The 23-year-old is MLB Pipeline’s 17th-ranked Dodger prospect. Taken in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, Swan has a fastball that reaches triple digits and is given a scouting grade of 70. In his last five starts, Swan has 28 strikeouts in 19⅓ innings and a 3.26 ERA.

Triple-A Oklahoma City​

It was the battle of the Jarvisses as Comets starter Justin Jarvis squared off against Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) starter Bryce Jarvis (no relation). Justin gave up two runs, Bryce gave up four runs, and the Comets beat the Aces 5-3. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Comets left fielder Nick Senzel hit a solo home run. In the bottom of the fourth, things got out of control. Four walks and a hit-by-pitch allowed the Comets to score three runs with just one hit, a single. The four runs turned out to be enough, as five Comets pitchers held the Aces to just three runs on the evening.

Will Klein struck out three of his four batter faced in 1⅓ innings in his Dodgers organizational debut.

Double-A Tulsa​

The Drillers defeated the Amarillo Sod Poodles (Diamondbacks) 7-4. Tulsa starter Chris Campos pitched a classic game for the win, going seven innings, giving up two runs, three hits, and two walks. Chris Newell provided him with all the offense he would need, with two home runs and four RBIs.

High-A Great Lakes​

The Loons played a doubleheader against the South Bend Cubs, which meant two 7-inning games. The Cubs won the first game 6-5 when they pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh without the benefit of a hit. A walk, steal, balk, and sacrifice fly was the winning formula. A grand slam home run by the Loons’ Logan Wagner in the sixth turned a 5-1 deficit into a brand new game.

Mike Sirota, fresh off the seven-day injured list, also hit a homer for the Loons.

The second game featured a 3-0 Loons victory on a seven-inning no-hitter. Swan pitched six of those innings, striking out seven and walking two. Roque Gutierrez finished it with a hitless seventh for the save. Logan Wagner again provided the offense, hitting another home run and driving in two of the runs.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga​

The San Jose Giants defeated the Quakes 6-4 in ten innings. The Quakes came from behind to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, the key hit being a triple by Eduardo Guerrero. They had a chance to win it in the ninth. With the bases loaded and two out, Joendry Vargas popped out to first to end the threat. Earlier in the game, Eduardo Quintero hit his league-leading tenth home run.

Tony Gonsolin on injured list with right elbow discomfort

Any sort of literal relief from the Dodgers adding Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech back to the bullpen on Saturday was muted with the corresponding move of Tony Gonsolin landing on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort.

Gonsolin, who missed the entire 2024 season after Tommy John surgery in September 2023, has had an uneven return to the major league rotation this season, with a 5.00 ERA and 5.22 xERA in seven starts.

He allowed four home runs on May 30 against the Yankees, but battled back to remain in the game for six innings to earn the win. Gonsolin’s 24.2-percent strikeout rate is a bit higher than his 23.2-percent career rate, but his 11.5-percent walk rate is his highest since 2021 and well above his 8.9-percent career walk rate.

Gonsolin’s last start was Wednesday against, in which he allowed three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings in a loss to the Mets.

He was slated to start on Tuesday in San Diego, so those innings will need to be filled. Gonsolin’s injury likely also means an extended stay in the rotation for Justin Wrobleski, who replaced Landon Knack on the roster and started Friday.

Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki are all on the injured list, none of them particularly close to a return, having not yet progressed to even starting a rehab assignment. The short-term path for the Dodgers rotation involves basically what they already have.

With Nick Frasso recently moved to the bullpen in Oklahoma City, the only starting options available in Triple-A are Knack (who can’t return before June 21 unless replacing an injured player), Matt Sauer, and Bobby Miller.

The Dodgers have been resistant to move Ben Casparius into the rotation given his value as an incredibly effective bulk reliever, but perhaps with Yates and Kopech now back in the bullpen, a path for Casparius to start could be made.

The roster move of Gonsolin to the injured list was announced after Dave Roberts’ pregame media scrum on Saturday, so more information will come later. But no matter how you slice it, this is a huge blow and a further test to a Dodgers depth chart already stretched to its limits.

Dodgers avoid being swept by Cardinals behind Clayton Kershaw’s gem

Kershaw goes five innings, allowing just one run and striking out a season-high seven hitters en route to his first win of 2025.

The Dodgers were able to give Clayton Kershaw ample run support on Sunday, as they avoided a sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals by taking the finale by a 7-3 final score.

The Dodgers immediately put a man in scoring position to begin the game against Cardinals right-hander Michael McGreevy, as Shohei Ohtani lined a double on the first pitch of the game. The Dodgers’ 2-4 hitters couldn’t provide any further offense as Ohtani was left on base to close the half inning.

St. Louis threatened in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out double from Brendan Donovan, but Clayton Kershaw was able to record a strikeout of Willson Contreras to keep the game scoreless.

The Dodgers opened the second frame with two straight singles from Max Muncy and Will Smith, and the former Cardinal Tommy Edman sliced a single up the middle to bring home the game’s first run. Hyeseong Kim lined a bullet down the right field line that crept into the corner, plating both Smith and Edman as Kim hustled into third base with a two-run triple, giving the Dodgers their biggest lead of the entire series.

Kershaw kept the Cardinals at bay in the second inning, as he recorded a pair of strikeouts, including a one of Pedro Pagés on his signature 12-6 curveball to end the bottom half. Kershaw added another pair of strikeouts in the third inning to bring his total on the afternoon to five, already surpassing his season total of three coming against the Cleveland Guardians on May 27.

Will Smith led off the fourth inning and slashed a leadoff triple, the second of the game for the Dodgers. Tommy Edman fought off a pitch near his hands and poked it down the third base line and past Nolan Arenado for an RBI double, pushing the Dodger lead to four.

Kershaw found himself in a jam in the fifth inning, as he allowed a pair of singles to Alec Burleson and Pagés to begin the inning. The Cardinals could only mount one run off of Kershaw all afternoon, as Masyn Winn lined a double to put St. Louis on the board. Kershaw rebounded quickly by striking out Donovan for his seventh of the game. The last time Kershaw had recorded at least seven strikeouts in a game came back on this day two years ago. His seventh strikeout was the 2,981st of his big league career, surpassing old teammate Zack Grienke for 20th on the all-time strikeout leaderboard.

The Cardinals let out a collective sigh of relief after Kershaw’s day was over, as Contreras knocked an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning against Lou Trivino and followed up with an RBI single in the seventh inning against Kirby Yates making his return from injury.

The Dodgers did get an insurance run before the bottom of the seventh inning as Mookie Betts connected for his first home run since his two-home run game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 19. It was the Dodgers’ first home run of the series, and the first overall since Andy Pages went deep on Wednesday against the New York Mets.

Tommy Edman recorded his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly before Max Muncy scored on a wild pitch from rookie Matt Svanson in the top of the eighth inning to push the Dodger back to four runs.

Tanner Scott recorded a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning before Michael Kopech came on for the ninth inning, making his season debut. After allowing a leadoff single to Ryan Vilade, Kopech needed just eight more pitches to seal a Dodger victory.

Swan struck out a career-high 8 in his second 6-inning start in a row for Great Lakes. Feduccia started a winning rally in the ninth inning for Oklahoma City.

Three of four Dodgers minor league affiliates won their games on Wednesday.

Player of the day​

Eriq Swan continued his strong stretch for Great Lakes, striking out a career-high eight in six innings on Wednesday, allowing just one run on two hits and a pair of walks. A fourth-round pick of the Dodgers in 2023, Swan has pitched six innings in each of his last two starts after capping out at four innings in his previous professional outings, dating back to last season.

Swan on Monday was named Midwest League pitcher of the week after six scoreless, hitless innings last Thursday. The right-hander has allowed zero or one run in five of his last six starts, with a 2.84 ERA and 33.3-percent strikeout rate during that span.

Triple-A Oklahoma City​

Albuquerque has been a hitting haven, especially for Oklahoma City in the previous two trips to the high elevation in New Mexico, averaging over 10 runs per game. But that hasn’t transpired so far this week. The Comets scored just once in the first eight innings on Wednesday before rallying for four in the ninth inning to beat the Isotopes (Rockies).

Hunter Feduccia started the winning rally with his third hit of the day, a double. That was followed by three straight singles, then Nick Senzel doubled home a pair to give Oklahoma City the lead, the Comets’ fifth straight hit to open the ninth inning.

Landon Knack in his first start since getting optioned had a very Pacific Coast League start, striking out eight but also allowing four runs with three walks in 5⅓ innings.

Oklahoma City’s first run on Tuesday came on a sixth-inning triple by James Outman, who scored on a balk. Outman had two hits in this one and has 12 extra-base hits in 17 games since getting sent down.

Double-A Tulsa​

Drillers batters managed only three hits in a shutout loss to the Springfield Cardinals. Catcher Yeiner Fernandez had two of the hits, including a double.

High-A Great Lakes​

Swan was backed by a balanced offense, with a hit by seven of the nine players in the Loons lineup to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers).

Zyhir Hope singled twice, walked, and stole two bases. Josue De Paula singled, walked, and scored two runs. Kyle Nevin had a two-run double. Mike Sirota walked, stole a base, scored a run, had an RBI triple in the win.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga​

The Quakes scored early and often in a rout of the Inland Empire 66ers (Angels).

Second baseman Elijah Hainline drove in four including a three-run home run, and also stole a base. Right fielder Jose Meza had two hits, walked once, stole two bases, and scored three runs. The Quakes stole eight bases on the night, and on the season have 61 more steals than any other team in the California League, through 59 games.

Brandon Dufault, the Inland Empire starting pitcher, was so wild that Quakes batters literally took pitches by Dufault. He threw 39 pitches, only 13 of them for strikes, and walked four and hit another of his 10 batters faced, allowing four runs (two of them earned) while recording only three outs.

In all, Rancho Cucamonga batters walked 12 times. Eduardo Quintero walked three times, singled and scored twice.

Quakes starter Logan Tabeling walked four batters himself, but also struck out four and allowed only one run in five innings to earn the win.

Notes: Hyeseong Kim, Emmet Sheehan, Kiké Hernández

Saturday night marked the first time Dodgers infielder/outfielder Hyeseong Kim and Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee played in the same major league game.

Both were teammates in on the Kiwoom Heroes (formerly the Nexen Heroes) from 2017-23 in the KBO, and both played together on the South Korean national baseball team. Sonja Chen at MLB.com talked to both players prior to this weekend’s matchup:

“It’s going to be very special,” Kim said. “We were drafted together, we’ve played together, but now we’re facing each other in the big leagues. It’s special that we’re in the same division. It’s going to be very exciting.”

Kim on Saturday had an RBI single, while Lee walked once.

After we talked yesterday morning about several rehabbing Dodgers and the possibility of Emmet Sheehan returning soon, manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that Sheehan will start one of the four games against the Padres, though hasn’t yet specified which game.

Sheehan, who struck out seven and allowed four runs in 3⅓ innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City, had a 3.97 ERA and struck out 21 against only one walk in 11⅓ innings in his four rehab starts, with a 44.7-percent strikeout rate. The right-hander was at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.

“This year and last year, the team being so good, I just wanted to be able to contribute and do my part and not be able to do that, it did suck, but now it’s nice to be at the end of the process,” Sheehan said in the locker room Saturday.

Ohtani will make Dodgers pitching debut Monday vs. SD

Monday will mark Ohtani’s first game since August 23, 2023 with the Angels.

The National League home run leader will start for the Dodgers on the mound on Monday against the Padres. Shohei Ohtani will make his pitching debut for the Dodgers in the series opener against the divisional rival, the team announced Sunday night.

How long Ohtani will last in the game remains to be seen but it likely won’t be too long. His longest simulated game, facing minor league hitters in recent weeks, has been three innings.

Ohtani told reporters on Saturday night that he was nearing a return. From Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic:

“I think it has a lot to do with pitch counts, but with the last live BP, I felt like the intensity was there and my stuff was game-ready,” Ohtani said after slugging a pair of home runs, including career home run No. 250, in an 11-5 win over the San Francisco Giants.

This was shortly before the Dodgers made the announcement that Ohtani would start Monday against the Padres.

All along there was nothing normal in Ohtani’s rehab from September 2023 Tommy John surgery, his second such procedure. He’s been balancing rehabbing his pitching arm while also being the everyday designated hitter for the team. Because he’s on the active roster, Ohtani could not go to the minors for rehab games like pitchers usually do. But nothing Ohtani does is really normal.

The usual caveat of throwing a pitcher into the fire even though he isn’t quite built up is muted somewhat by the fact that Ohtani is literally an extra pitcher on the roster. Already active as a two-way player, he does not count against the 13-pitcher limit. So him going, say, only two or three innings, isn’t as onerous for a staff since Ohtani pitching wouldn’t cost them another active pitcher on the roster.

So it’s into the breach we go, with Ohtani adding pitching back to his bag of tricks, for the first time with the Dodgers.

Emmet Sheehan and the long road back

Sheehan rejoins the Dodgers rotation 13 months after elbow surgery to start Wednesday night against the Padres, making his first major league appearance since the 2023 NLDS.

Emmet Sheehan will be activated later Wednesday to start against the Padres at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers right-hander returning from last May’s Tommy John surgery.

Sheehan has been all smiles this week at Dodger Stadium, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. He had the same demeanor a month ago while throwing live batting practice to then-injured regulars Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman. That was when Sheehan’s rehab kicked into gear, followed by a two-inning start in the Arizona Complex League and three starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

He pitched into the fourth inning in each of his last two rehab starts but topped out at 10 outs recorded. The results were excellent though, striking out 16 of his 41 batters faced (a 39-percent rate) against only one walk in Triple_A. He allowed five runs in 9⅓ innings for the Comets, but that was in the offense-heavy Pacific Coast League, and Oklahoma City announcer Alex Freedman called the two-run home run allowed by Sheehan last Thursday “an Albuquerque special.”

Sheehan had a promising first season in the majors in 2023. Sure there were growing pains, but he pitched so well down the stretch that the Dodgers had no choice but to put him on the Division Series roster. Entering 2024, he was penciled into the starting rotation but was slowed in spring by forearm discomfort that didn’t progress like anyone hoped.

Now he’s back on a major league mound, just 13 months after Sheehan had the hybrid Tommy John surgery and internal brace procedure last May 15. He joins a growing list of Dodgers pitchers returning from long post-surgery layoffs this season:

• Dustin May: first game back April 1, 685 days after previous MLB game
• Tony Gonsolin: first game back April 30, 621 days after previous MLB game
• Shohei Ohtani: first game back Monday, 663 days after previous MLB (pitching) game
• Sheehan: Wednesday is 620 days after his last MLB game

Sheehan at 25 years old is the youngest of these returning starters. The promise remains, and he gives the Dodgers another viable starting option for a rotation that has been in scramble mode for the last month or so.

Chavis nearly misses another cycle, Zazueta strikes out 10

In the Dodgers’ minor league games for Wednesday, June 18th, we have Comets setting off fireworks, more Zaza from Zazu, and some cyclical synchronicity.

Player of the day​

Michael Chavis came within a home run of pulling off one of the most unlikely feats in baseball history… the James Outman. In August of 2022, Outman also playing for Oklahoma City, hit for two cycles in the span of four games. Michael Chavis, who three games prior hit for the cycle, had four hits, a single, two doubles, and a triple on Wednesday.

One of those doubles was hit 352 feet at 107 mph, but fell short of the home run needed to replicate the mathematically improbable feat. There have been about 200 cycles in Major League Baseball in the last 75 years, or roughly 2-3 per season. Post 1900, there have been three major league players who have hit for multiple cycles in the same year. Aaron Hill, in 2012, hit two cycles eleven days apart, the closest that two cycles have ever been hit in the majors.

Triple-A Oklahoma City​

The Comets offense was unrelenting, as the Comets put up fifteen runs on the Round Rock Express (Rangers). The enigmatic Bobby Miller, in his first start since giving up ten runs eight days prior, gave up one unearned run in five innings, striking out seven. Two depth relievers for the parent Dodgers, Nick Frasso and Edgardo Henriquez, pitched no-walk, one-hit scoreless innings.

The scoring for the Comets began the same way as it did yesterday, with an Alex Freeland home run in the first inning, his tenth.

And also just like yesterday, the Comets followed that up with a five-run second inning.

Esteury Ruiz had a home run and four RBIs, and Kody Hoese had four hits in the one-sided slugfest. Interestingly, the legend himself, Outman, hit another home run, his 15th.

Double-A Tulsa​

The Drillers couldn’t get out of the seventh inning until nine runs scored, and lost to the Midland RockHounds (Athletics), 11-5. Patrick Copen pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits, five walks, and striking out five, leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. Taylor Young drove home all five runs for the Drillers.

High-A Great Lakes​

It’s called Great Lakes for a reason, as the Loons game was rained out once again.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga​

The Quakes defeated the Lake Elsinore Storm (Padres) 5-3. MLB Pipeline’s nineteenth-ranked Dodgers prospect, Christian Zazueta, pitched another gem, continuing a run of ace-like performances from Dodgers starting pitchers in the lower minor leagues. His stat line was an almost perfect five innings, no runs, one hit, no walks, ten strikeouts. Zazueta threw only 15 balls while striking out ten of the sixteen batters he faced. It’s only Low-A ball, but Zazueta is someone to keep an eye on. He was acquired in February 2024 as part of a deal that sent Caleb Ferguson to the Yankees.

The offense put up five runs, with catcher Angel Diaz driving in three. Eduardo Quintero was given the day game off after a night game, probably tired from running around the bases so much.

Hit batters & manager ejections in the final game of a 4-game series. San Diego prevented a 4-game sweep by LA

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Shohei Ohtani were hit by pitches in the ninth inning in the seventh game between two heated rivals over 11 days. Managers Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt were both ejected in the top of the ninth.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched into the seventh inning, but the Dodgers offense had a rough night, though they scored three in the ninth inning after trailing by five runs. Xander Bogaerts homered and had four hits in the Padres win on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.

Player of the day​

Hunter Feduccia continued his hot hitting with two hits, including his fourth home run. Feduccia now has twenty-two hits in his last fifty at-bats. Feduccia’s batting line stands at .306/.407/.468.

Triple-A Oklahoma City​

The Comets were cruising to victory over the Round Rock Express (Rangers), entering the ninth with a 6-1 lead, and retiring the first batter. Then a game-tying five-run rally broke out. All of that excitement became an exercise in futility a half-inning later when ex-major league relief ace Craig Kimbrell walked Austin Gauthier with the bases loaded to plate the winning run. The 37-year-old Kimbrell has worked 22 games in the minor leagues this season.

Prior to the ninth, the Express were very quiet. Comets starter Justin Jarvis surrendered just a single run in five and one-third innings, Jose Rodriguez struck out four of the six hitters he faced, and Edgardo Henriquez pitched a perfect eighth inning. Henriquez pitched for the second consecutive day, pitching scoreless innings in both games, and is ready for recall upon notice. His final pitch of the evening, a 102.9 mph fastball, was swung on and missed for his second strikeout.

Esteury Ruiz had two hits and his 34th stolen base (in 38 attempts). Ruiz is sporting an on-base percentage of .395; his minor league OBPs have been well over .400 for the three years prior. His .285 batting average is also on par with his .287 lifetime minor league batting average. Ruiz led the American League with 67 stolen bases in 2023.

Double-A Tulsa​

The Midland RockHounds (Athletics) beat the Drillers 6-5. The Drillers scored four runs in the eighth inning to make the game close, but couldn’t close the gap. Third baseman Kendall Simmons had three hits for the Drillers and drove in three of their five runs.

High-A Great Lakes​

The Loons scored eight runs in the seventh inning to blow open a close game and defeated the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals) 13-4. Jake Gelof had a big game with a double, a home run, two walks, and five RBIs.

Mike Sirota and Frank Rodriguez also homered for the Loons. Luke Fox started the game and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out six.

The following boxscore anomaly requires some explanation. It lists Sirota as going from left field, to DH, and back to left field, which is against the rules. The best I can piece this together is Zyhir Hope was listed as the DH in the lineup card, but then took a defensive position in left field, which is somewhat akin to batting out of turn, so he was removed from the game at the start of the third inning. This lost the DH for the Loons. Sirota, the left fielder in the original lineup, then went to left field, where he should have been, and the pitcher’s spot was now in the cleanup position.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga​

The uakes won their eighth game in a row, defeating the Lake Elsinore Storm 3-2. This game marked the end of the 66-game first half with the Quakes 41-25. Sterling Patick started for the Quakes and pitched five innings, yielding one run on three hits. The teams took a 1-1 tie into the eighth inning, when Eduardo Quintero singled in a run, giving the Quakes the lead heading into the ninth. But the Storm pushed across a run to tie it. The Quakes then deployed the walk, walk, bunt, balk strategy, which worked perfectly to secure the win.
