News Commanders Team Notes

Have the Browns changed their minds on trading Myles Garrett?

Myles Garrett shocked the NFL world earlier this month when he revealed he wanted a trade out of Cleveland this offseason. Citing a desire to win, Garrett publicly declared his desire to head elsewhere.

While fans and analysts across the NFL began immediately preparing fantasy trades for Garrett, the Browns insisted they had no desire to move their franchise player. The eight-year veteran is a six-time All-Pro and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Have the Browns changed their minds?

In a recent report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, she noted the Browns weren’t changing their minds — yet.

Meanwhile, Cleveland is playing hardball. Teams from both the NFC and AFC have been calling and the response from Cleveland’s front office? “We are not moving him… but stay tuned.”

Stay tuned is certainly a different response than the original “we are not trading him.”

Russini mentions multiple AFC and NFC teams have inquired about Garrett, which they should. He’s arguably the best defensive player in the NFL and impacts every game. The Washington Commanders have been a popular potential destination for Garrett after their surprising success in 2024 with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Garrett was asked at the Super Bowl if he’d welcome a trade to the Commanders, to which he responded, “Absolutely.”

Garrett has even apparently done his homework on the Commanders.

“I think they need a pass rusher,” Garrett said of the Commanders. “I think that’s something that they dearly missed. They’re in the playoffs and some of the big games, and I feel like I can fill that role.”

He’s correct. A game-changing pass rusher is arguably Washington’s biggest need this offseason.

While no one can officially say which teams have checked in on Garrett, you can bet Commanders GM Adam Peters has at least inquired.

So, don’t count out Garrett to Washington just yet.

What trait is important for Commanders GM Adam Peters?

We are one week away from the 2025 NFL combine. That means the entire NFL world will gather in Indianapolis, Indiana, where we officially begin the countdown to the 2025 NFL draft.

The combine is important for many reasons, least of which are the 40-yard dash times. Yes, teams want to see a player’s speed, but the film always trumps workouts. Teams use the 40 as more of a confirmation than anything about a player’s speed and athleticism.

Different teams, specifically general managers, look for different things. What is an important trait for Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters?

Ryan Fowler, an NFL analyst for The Draft Network, uncovered some excellent information about Peters. Peters is a big fan of the short shuttle drill.

Certain teams have specific thresholds from a height, weight, speed, length perspective, while some GMs have certain testing landmarks that can really move the needle on a player.

For Commanders GM Adam Peters, the short shuttle – where a players ability to quickly change… pic.twitter.com/7dxI3FDAW1

— Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) February 20, 2025

The Commanders drafted players with two of the three best short shuttle times from last season’s NFL combine, three of the top 12, and four of the top 22.

Cornerback Mike Sainristil and wide receiver Luke McCaffrey had the second and third-best short shuttle times from last year’s combine. Linebacker/safety Domonique Hampton and tight end Ben Sinnott were two of the other players Washington drafted with excellent short shuttle times.

What does the short shuttle measure? Most importantly, it tests a player’s change-of-direction ability and indicates quickness and agility. These are arguably more important traits than only a 40-yard dash, especially at specific positions, such as cornerback, wide receiver and tight end.

So, while it’s not the ultimate indication of who Peters will choose, if you’re a Washington fan, you should pay close attention to those short shuttle times next week.

Commanders boast 3 of NFL's rising 50 under 40

When the Los Angeles Rams hired Sean McVay as their head coach in 2017, he became the youngest head coach in the NFL at the age of 30. His hiring sparked a league-wide wake-up call that there are more young people who are capable of making an impact in the NFL than most realize. To that end, The Athletic created its top 40 under 40 in 2020, which is the result of younger hiring trends across the league.

This year, The Athletic released its top 50 under 40 list, which includes rising coaches, executives, personalities, and other personnel who significantly impact the NFL. The Washington Commanders boast two coaches and an executive on this list:

David Blough, Assistant Quarterbacks Coach

“The 29-year-old Purdue product bounced around the NFL as a backup quarterback before connecting with Kliff Kingsbury in Arizona. He then followed Kingsbury to Washington, where he assisted Kingsbury, Brian Johnson and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard with the development of Jayden Daniels. Kingsbury described Blough as “one of the brightest quarterbacks I’ve ever been around,” and praises his rapport with his players, his insight and communication skills. Blough received interest from Aaron Glenn and the Jets about their quarterbacks coach opening, but the Commanders blocked Blough from interviewing, viewing him as a valuable piece of their quarterback room and with potential to rise through the ranks of their organization.”

Blough’s football IQ exceeds his football ability, and that’s okay. His experience as a player might have been brief, but it is enough for him to relate to the younger players and help them acclimate to the league, which is exactly what he did with Jayden Daniels. And his ability to connect with players and provide valuable insights to the team will be an asset to Washington for years to come.

Brian Johnson, Assistant Head Coach/Offense

“The former Utah quarterback spent 11 seasons in the college ranks before joining the Philadelphia Eagles as quarterbacks coach in 2021 and 2022 and offensive coordinator in 2023. Johnson moved to the Washington Commanders’ staff as assistant head coach and offensive pass game coordinator last season. There, he joined forces with Kliff Kingsbury to help guide Jayden Daniels to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in a season in which Washington won 12 games and reached the NFC Championship Game after fielding one of the top offenses in the league. Kingsbury may depart for a head coaching job in the next hiring cycle. Johnson would likely succeed him as OC if he doesn’t get snatched up by another team.”

After just one season with the Commanders and their success with Jayden Daniels, the Houston Texans came knocking and interviewed Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator position. The Texans ended up going in a different direction, but Johnson is certainly catching the eye of teams around the league.

Brandon Sosna, Senior VP of Football Operations

“After holding a variety of administrative jobs with college programs like the Cincinnati Bearcats and USC Trojans, Sosna joined the Detroit Lions as senior director of football administration in 2022. After two years, he moved to Washington, where as senior vice president of football operations, Sosna serves as lead contract negotiator. Sosna also oversees Washington’s analytics, health and performance departments while also taking part in aspects of the team’s business operations.”

Sosna joined the Commanders in 2024, like most of the coaching staff and other executives. He worked closely with Adam Peters and Dan Quinn, among others, to ensure that the Commanders not only brought in the right players but that the money made sense, too. He’s been involved in several things in Washington, gaining some experience and piquing the interest of other NFL teams that may want to bring him on in the future.

Commanders projected to be Super Bowl contenders in 2025

The Washington Commanders had a miraculous season in 2024, far better than anticipated and their best since 1991. They rode the coattails of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to the NFC Championship game, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

After such a stellar performance, it’s no wonder some are predicting that the Commanders will make a serious run at the Super Bowl in 2025, and that includes NFL analyst Bucky Brooks. Brooks named the eight teams with the biggest Super Bowl window and the Commanders were seventh.

The presence of the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year gives the Commanders a puncher’s chance against any opponent. Though Jayden Daniels’ magical debut season and run to the NFC title game must be kept in perspective, the Washington star undeniably showed he is a playmaking wizard with the talent and tools to elevate the team around him.

With $75 million of projected salary-cap space at the Commanders’ disposal, Daniels could enter 2025 with a more dynamic supporting cast. Washington can morph from a surprising upstart into an NFC heavyweight by adding speed and explosiveness on the perimeter and bringing in bullies at the point of attack.

The veteran-laden defense flourished in Dan Quinn’s first season, but the unit needs reinforcements to upgrade the speed and athleticism along the front seven. Veterans — and pending free agents — Dante Fowler Jr. and Bobby Wagner were essential to the team’s playoff run in 2024. Still, the Commanders could climb higher on the ladder of contention with an upgraded roster.

Given the salary cap increase announced earlier this week, the Commanders have plenty of capital to work with this offseason. They’ll work to keep the pieces they can and seek replacements for those they can’t or those who simply aren’t working out.

Adam Peters and Dan Quinn got a taste of success in 2024, as did the Commanders’ players. The entire organization wants more of that and will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Expect the Commanders to be just as formidable next season as they were in 2024.

Bobby Wagner, Zach Ertz may cost more than Commanders want to pay

The Washington Commanders are shaping up to be very busy over the next few weeks. Free agency opens in less than three weeks, but before that, Washington must determine how many of its 31 free agents, including 28 unrestricted free agents, it wants to retain.

Two of the Commanders’ top free agents are linebacker Bobby Wagner and tight end Zach Ertz. Both 34, Wagner and Ertz were outstanding on and off the field for Washington in 2024. Wagner continued to defy age, while Ertz proved he was still a very capable starting NFL tight end. The two veterans started all 17 regular-season games and each of the three playoff games.

Even better, they did it on the cheap. Wagner had a salary cap number of $6.5 million last season, while Ertz earned $3 million. Both veterans want to return to Washington in 2025.

The team would like to retain them, too, but at what cost? The Commanders are trying to take the next step and must be careful about paying for past production. Wagner and Ertz meant so much more to Washington than what they produced on the field.

Judging by their performances last season, Wagner and Ertz earned a raise, but again, that’s tricky.

What would a new contract for each player look like in 2025?

Former NFL agent Joel Corry appeared on the “BMitch & Finlay” show on 106.7 The Fan in Washington on Friday and discussed both players.

“Ertz was practically the lowest-paid starting tight end on a veteran contract at $3 million base last year, and if you look at him statistically, it compares to Pat Freiermuth, who signed for $12.1 million as an extension of his rookie deal, and Hunter Henry, who is at $9 million,” Corry said of Ertz, via Lou DiPietro of Audacy.

“So, where they are, I think maybe $7 or $8 million on a one-year deal for him,” he said.

Would the Commanders, who have around $80 million in salary cap room want to commit to that number for Ertz?

What about Wagner?

“Wagner, all the guy does is get accolades, and last year, Lavonte David signed a one-year deal for $8.5 million with up to $10 million in incentives, and Demario Davis signed for two years at an average of $8.625 million,” Corry said of the future Hall of Famer. “Bobby’s better than both of those guys always have been, and the cap has gone up at least 10 percent, so I think that $10 million could be his floor, because you have to throw age stuff out the window with him.”

So, if Corry is correct, Washington could be paying Wagner and Ertz a combined $18 million in 2025. The good news is they will likely only require one-year deals, but with so many holes, the Commanders would like to spend money across the roster to give Jayden Daniels more help.

It should be fascinating to see how general manager Adam Peters handles this over the next couple of weeks. The odds are Washington will find a way to get it done with both veterans.

Jay Gruden grades Commanders QB Jayden Daniels' rookie season

Former Washington head coach Jay Gruden is a big fan of Jayden Daniels. Gruden, who is an analyst for Underdog Fantasy and regularly appears on Washington-area radio shows throughout the season, praised Daniels throughout his phenomenal rookie season.

Gruden often said he was running out of good things about Daniels.

Daniels led the Commanders to 12 wins and an appearance in the NFC championship game. It was the franchise’s best season in 33 years.

Daniels would win every Rookie of the Year award before winning the official NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award at this month’s NFL Honors.

So, how did Gruden assess Daniels’ rookie season?

Gruden handed out grades for each of the rookie quarterbacks, and, no surprise, Daniels came out on top with an “A+.”

Grading rookie QBs. JD5 was first pic.twitter.com/GZNPa7sYVW

— Jay Gruden (@Coach_JayGruden) February 20, 2025

Gruden was clear on why Daniels was first. It was his consistency and how Daniels made those around him better. Gruden’s former quarterback in Washington, Colt McCoy, also his co-host, gave Daniels an “A+.”

Gruden said Daniels set a standard that is hard to follow, but he believes Daniels can do it.

Wild trade scenario would bring Tyreek Hill to Commanders in 2025

The Washington Commanders have plenty of capital to work with during the offseason, something they’ll need to lean into during free agency so they can nail down some extra weapons for Jayden Daniels. They’ll use the draft for some of that, but for immediate-impact players, they’ll have to make trades or target guys in free agency. To that end, Bleacher Report has suggested a wild trade that would bring Miami Dolphins wideout Tyreek Hill to Washington.

In the trade proposal, Miami would get a 2025 2nd-round pick, a 2025 fifth-round pick, and a 2026 3rd-round pick from Washington. In return, the Commanders receive Tyreek Hill, a 2025 7th-round pick, and a 2026 5th-round pick.

Bleacher Report’s trade suggestion is based on comments Hill made after the Dolphins’ final game of the regular season.

“This is my first time I haven’t been in the playoffs,” Hill said to reporters. “I just gotta do what’s best for me and my family. If that’s here or wherever the case may be, I’m finna open that door for myself. I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro.”
While on ProFootballTalk, Hill said, “I’m taking full accountability for what I said. I’m gonna come back next year. I wanna stay with the Dolphins.”
However, if the Dolphins get off to a slow start or struggle next season, they should be wary of Hill’s temperament. He may grow frustrated and become a distraction.

Should the Dolphins decide to trade Hill, who has indicated he plans to retire after the 2026 season, the Commanders make a prime landing spot for the wideout. Having Jayden Daniels throw the ball to Hill, who would line up across from Terry McLaurin, would make the Commanders almost unstoppable on offense.

The Commanders don’t need much to get to the next level, and adding a weapon like Tyreek Hill would go a long way toward reaching that goal. If Miami decides to trade him, and if he lands in Washington.

Commanders' Jayden Daniels fifth-highest graded QB in 2024

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels breathed new life into the organization in 2024. Adam Peters and Dan Quinn put together a solid team with not just the right talent, but the right character qualities to get the players on the same page and buying what they were selling. Daniels took those pieces and launched them to a level no one anticipated.

In leading his team to its best season since 1991, Daniels didn’t just break records, he shattered them. He earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades and NFL Moment of the Year for his game-winning Hail Mary pass against the Chicago Bears.

Now that the season is over, Pro Football Focus released its highest-graded quarterbacks for 2024, and Daniels was fifth on the list.

5. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders (90.6)

It’s hard to have a better two-year stretch than what Jayden Daniels put together between his last year of college at LSU and his rookie year with the Commanders. He followed up his Heisman-winning senior season with an Offensive Rookie of the Year performance in which he led Washington to its first NFC Championship game appearance in 33 years. Daniels threw for 4,390 yards, 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while adding 1,026 yards and seven scores on the ground through the postseason.

Daniels completed 69% of his passes in 2024 and finished with a 100.1 quarterback rating. He was fifth behind Lamar Jackson (94.9), Joe Burrow (93.9), Josh Allen (91.9), and Justin Herbert (91.2).

His play in 2024 dispelled any concerns anyone may have had about his ability to transition to the professional level. Daniels clearly has what it takes to play in the NFL, and the Commanders will keep him around for as long as they can.

Michigan star would give Jayden Daniels, Commanders an intriguing offensive weapon

We know the Washington Commanders must get Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin more help in 2025. We know Tee Higgins isn’t coming to Washington. Veterans such as Cooper Kupp, Christian Kirk, and Deebo Samuel have been mentioned as possibilities for the Commanders if their current teams move on from them.

But what if Washington’s new offensive weapon isn’t a wide receiver?

Picking 29th in the 2025 NFL draft, the Commanders will likely miss out on the top wide receiver prospects, although there will be several potential options in the second round. But what if Washington picks a tight end with the 29th overall pick?

Penn State’s Tyler Warren will be gone, but the Commanders selected Michigan tight end Colston Loveland in a new mock draft from Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire.

The Commanders top two tight ends are free agents and Colston Loveland is a playmaker as a receiver at the position and has a huge upside.

First, let’s address Washington’s top two tight ends from 2024. Zach Ertz and John Bates are free agents, but fill very different roles. Ertz was the No. 1 tight end and was an integral part of the offense. He’ll be 35 in 2025 but wants to return. The Commanders want him back, too. Bates is primarily a blocking tight end, but a very good one. There’s an excellent chance both return.

There is also 2024 second-round pick Ben Sinnott.

What would that mean for Loveland? Nothing.

If the Commanders picked Loveland, it doesn’t mean they’re down on Sinnott. When general manager Adam Peters selected Sinnott, he compared him to two Pro Bowlers he had in San Francisco: tight end Goerge Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury could have a more versatile role in mind for Sinnott in 2025.

As for Loveland, the potential is through the roof. Loveland is 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, with speed, athleticism, hands and excellent route running. He could line up in the slot for Washington, while Ertz lines up in the more traditional tight end role next season. The Commanders could move Loveland across the entire formation. He’s that type of offseason weapon.

Loveland is only 20 years old and would be an exciting pickup for the Commanders. Much like Warren, though, he likely doesn’t make it to No. 29.

Commanders GM Adam Peters says Martin Mayhew is retiring

The man Adam Peters replaced as general manager of the Washington Commanders is retiring. During his media availability on Tuesday at the NFL combine, Peters said senior personnel executive/advisor Martin Mayhew is retiring from the NFL.

Mayhew, 59, spent nine seasons as a player in the NFL, most notably with the Redskins from 1989-92, winning a Super Bowl. After Washington, Mayhew spent four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring after the 1996 season.

In 1999, Mayhew was a personnel intern for Washington under former general manager Charley Casserly. In 2001, Mayhew went to the Detroit Lions, where he’d spend 15 seasons, first as a senior director of football administration before becoming Detroit’s general manager from 2008-15.

After the Lions fired him, Mayhew spent one year as the director of football operations with the New York Giants before moving to San Francisco in 2017. He then spent two seasons as a senior personnel executive before being promoted to vice president of player personnel for three seasons.

In 2021, Mayhew returned to Washington as then-coach Ron Rivera’s handpicked general manager.

While Rivera was fired last January, Mayhew was one of the few people Peters kept because their relationship dates back to San Francisco.

In addition to his NFL accomplishments, Mayhew also earned a law degree from Georgetown University.

Mayhew’s retirement follows the recent news that Marty Hurney is no longer with the organization. Mayhew and Hurney were Rivera’s two high-profile personnel hires in 2021.

Best wishes to Martin Mayhew in his retirement.

One free agent each NFL team should want to sign in 2025

We’re less than a month away from the start of NFL free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 12. But the legal tampering window opens two days before that on March 10 at 12 p.m. ET, where teams will be able to negotiate with free agents before the official start of the new league year.

The 2025 salary cap hasn’t been set yet, but it will land between $277.5 and $281.5 million, according to NFL.com. A number of NFL teams have some work to do over the next month when it comes to building their 2025 rosters.

Our NFL Wire editors identified one pending free agent (at the time of publication) that each team should sign to help improve their roster. And it seems like guard Trey Smith and edge rusher Josh Sweat will be in high demand.

Player Overview

JT Tuimoloau was such a gifted athlete in high school, he had a couple of choices for what sport to pursue in college. The basketball player could have accepted an offer to continue in that sport at the University of Oregon. The football player that was the top prospect in the country, named Polynesian High School Player of the Year, and led his team to two state championships in Washington had offers from several major programs. Tuimoloau chose to attend Ohio State, but thought he would play both sports for the Buckeyes. He ultimately decided to focus on only football.

That was probably the right decision because Tuimoloau saw the field early and often. He played in every game as a true freshman in 2021, accumulating modest stats in limited snaps. Tuimoloau announced himself in 2022 with a standout game against Penn State where he played a role in four turnovers, including a pick-six, in the win over the Nittany Lions. He’d be named first-team All-Big Ten for the season. In 2023, he improved on his sack numbers en route to another first-team All-Big Ten selection. He made his last season in Columbus his most productive, helping propel the Buckeyes to the National Championship while once again being named first-team All-Big Ten.

Strengths

  • Prototypical size for a 4-3 DE
  • Quick off the snap
  • Heavy hands that jolt blockers
  • Excellent vision into the backfield
  • Strong enough to hold the edge in the run game
  • Can be effective dropping into zone coverage

Weaknesses

  • Hip tightness makes it hard for him to bend around blockers
  • Despite being a good athlete, not a rusher that wins with speed
  • Needs to string together pass rush moves more consistently
  • Can miss tackles by leaving feet or not breaking down

Let’s See His Work

How He Fits on the Commanders

The Commanders signed several players to remake the defensive end position. Dante Fowler, Jr., Clelin Ferrell, and Dorrance Armstrong were added in free agency while Javontae Jean-Baptiste was a late-round draft pick. The position left many wanting not only more production, but better run-stopping ability. Fowler, Jr. was the most productive of the bunch, but will be a free agent along with Ferrell.

JT Tuimoloau would bring much needed size and athleticism to the position. He has plenty of strength to set the edge in the run game and bull rush a tackle. While he isn’t the speediest or bendiest, he has good get off at the snap as well as straight-line speed. Tuimoloau has the talent to start opposite Dorance Armstrong as a rookie because he has a high floor. There should be no problem stopping the run right away. It will allow him to stay on the field while he improves elements of his pass rushing. While he may not be the dynamic rusher many fans are looking for, Tuimoloau should at worst be a reliable starter for the Commanders.

One position group (of many) that is filled with question marks heading into 2025 is interior offensive line. This group seemed to be in pretty good shape as the 2024 season came to an end, with C Tyler Biadasz, RG Sam Cosmi, and LG Nick Allegretti all under contract in Washington for 2025, but Cosmi’s ACL injury in the playoffs threw a wrench into roster planning for the offensive line. Right guard went from being the most secured position in the unit to be the biggest hole. A compounding factor in solving it is the fact that Cosmi’s replacement needs to be high-quality, but not long-term since the Commanders will obviously want their 2021 second-round draft pick to return to the lineup as soon as he is healthy, whenever that may be.

2024 roster

C Tyler Biadasz signed with Washington as a free agent last year on a 3-yr, $30m contract. He played well for the Commanders and appears to be a solid part of the roster core for the coming two seasons. His backup Michael Deiter played poorly, and will almost certainly not be re-signed by the Commanders for the coming season.

Had RG Sam Cosmi not torn his ACL in the playoffs, I probably would have written that the Commanders should focus on trying to upgrade the LT position held by Nick Allegretti, who, like Biadasz, signed a 3-yr contract in 2024, but for considerably less money ($16m for 3 years). With Cosmi’s injury, any upgrade at LG may need to be put on the back burner.

Backups Chris Paul and Julian Good-Jones are both under contract for 2025, though International Player Pathway practice squad player Haggai Chisolm Ndubuisi has not (yet) re-signed with the team. I think it’s fair to say that the depth at all three interior positions needs to be addressed with some urgency in free agency and the draft

2025 Estimated cap space and free agency options

Following the release of Jonathan Allen on Friday, the Commanders have an estimated Effective Cap Space of about $74.1m.

NOTE: Earlier this week, Washington announced the re-signing of kicker Zane Gonzalez, and it was confirmed that All Pro LB Bobby Wagner has been re-signed as well.

Both contracts were reported to be one-year deals — Gonzalez for an estimated $1.2m and Wagner for a reported $8m guaranteed plus incentives. Neither has (yet) been added to the Over the Cap database and so neither is included in these figures.

It seems probable that the two signings (together) will reduce Commanders estimated cap space by just over $9m.

The breakdown looks like this:

  • Current estimated available cap space (46 players): $80.76m
  • Less: Cap space required to sign draft picks: $8.32m
  • Add back: Rule of 51 offsets/other adjustments: $1.67m
  • 2025 Effective Cap Space: $74.11m
  • Less: allowance for injury replacement during season: $5.11m
  • 2025 Cap space available for signing/re-signing veteran free agents: $69m

(If you reduce the available space for the extensions for Wagner & Gonzalez, roughly an estimated $60m in cap space would remain for free agency at the moment.)

Washington currently has one solid healthy starter (Biadasz) and one acceptable starter (Allegretti) backed up by two unproven backups to man three key positions. The team will clearly need to be active in both free agency and the draft to add a starter and one or two quality backups to the interior offensive line to be ready to compete in 2025.

For a full list of upcoming free agents, CLICK HERE

The list can be sorted by team or position.

Of course, some — maybe even most — of the most talented of these players will re-sign with their current teams, but Washington should be a popular destination for free agents looking for an opportunity to get to the playoffs with a dynamic quarterback. Washington should offer more appeal to high-quality free agents than at any other time in this century.

Options in the NFL Draft

Below is a list of college interior offensive linemen who will be entering the NFL via the draft in April, ranked by CBS Sports.

The overall rank in the left column can provide some general guidance about which round each player is expected to be drafted in, though such rankings are highly subjective and likely to change substantially between now and the end of April.

Washington holds the following draft picks (per Tankathon):

REPORT: TE John Bates re-signed to 3-year deal

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Washington Football Team

Bates's back!

Just one day after the Commanders came to terms with veteran tight end Zach Ertz to return for 2025, Adam Peters finished putting the tight end band back together. According to Mike Garafolo and others, John Bates, who was drafted by the Washington Football team in the 4th round of the 2021 draft, has been given a 3-year extension. The contract value wasn’t immediately reported upon.

The #Commanders have agreed to terms with TE John Bates on a three-year deal, sources say.

A terrific blocker who has added 61 catches for 592 yards in four seasons in Washington, Bates returns alongside TE Zach Ertz, who re-upped with the team over the weekend. pic.twitter.com/qJbePugyES

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 10, 2025

Throughout his 4-year NFL career, Bates has been used more as a blocker than pass-catcher, though he has demonstrated pretty reliable hands and strong ability to get tough yards after the catch.

Washington re-signed TE John Bates to a 3-year deal, per source. A key signing for the Commanders. Bates' blocking ability, particularly in space vs. defensive ends, made him a key person to retain.

This move ensures that the Commanders will have the same tight end room that they finished the ‘24 season with (Ertz, Bates, Sinnott, Yankoff), meaning that Adam Peters can focus on other priorities during the balance of free agency and April’s draft.

Other key roster moves:

  • Bobby Wagner - 1 year extension
  • Zach Ertz - 1 year extension
  • Zane Gonzalez - 1 year extension
  • Jonathan Allen - released
  • Deebo Samuel - acquired in trade from 49ers
  • Chris Rodriquez - tendered (ERFA)

Washington Commanders Free Agency: Jeremy Chinn agrees to 2-year, $16 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders

NFL: Washington Commanders at Cincinnati Bengals

Sweet Chinn Music moves to Sin City

The Washington Commanders lost another free agent on the first day of the NFL’s “legal tampering” period. Dyami Brown agreed to a 1-year, $10 million deal that’s worth up to $12 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier today. Washington wanted to bring back safety Jeremy Chinn after he was brought in on a prove-it deal. Chinn was expected to hit free agency, and have enough interest to price him out of a return to Washington. That’s exactly what happened, and Chinn is heading to Las Vegas on a 2-year deal worth over $16 million.

Washington Commanders Free Agency: Jonathan Allen agrees to 3-year, $60 million deal with the Vikings

Big Jon gets paid

The Washington Commanders attempted to trade Jonathan Allen, but there were no takers, so he was released. This allowed him to get a head start on free agency before the legal tampering began, and teams started spending big money. Allen reportedly visited the Minnesota Vikings, and has agreed to a 3-year, $60 million contract per Adam Schefter.

Allen has been a leader on the field for years, and return from a pec injury to help the Commanders in their playoff push. GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn have been reshaping the team, and moving on from some high-priced players. Jer’Zhan Newton was drafted in the second round last year, and Javon Kinlaw reportedly agreed to terms on a 3-year deal yesterday.

The RBs are all coming back

The Washington Commanders are bringing another familiar face back. RB Jeremy McNichols has reportedly been signed on a 1-year deal. He was the #3 RB behind Brian Robinson Jr and Austin Ekeler. He beat out the returning Chris Rodriguez Jr and UDFA Michael Wiley for a solid spot on the roster. McNichols had 55 rushes for 261 yards and 4 TDs during the regular season, and added 9 receptions for 27 yards. He also returned 7 kickoffs for 164 yards during the season.

Washington Commanders Free Agency: Patriots DE Deatrich Wise Jr. signs 1-year deal worth up to $5m

Buffalo Bills v New England Patriots

An experienced DE with a super bowl ring and ties to the Commanders

Shortly after signing former Patriots CB Jonathan Jones, the Commanders went back to the NE well to sign 8-year veteran defensive end Deatrich Wise, a 30-year-old listed at 6’5”, 280 pounds.

With Dante Fowler, Clelin Ferrell and Jalyn Holmes all becoming free agents with the start of the new league year, Washington needed to add depth, experience and skill at the position group. In addition, the Commanders front office is clearly on a mission to beef up its leaky run defense from 2024 as it heads into the 2nd season of the Dan Quinn era with heightened hopes and expectations.

Wise was drafted in the 4th round of the 2017 draft by the New England Patriots. He has spent his entire career with New England, and has a super bowl ring. His career has been free of major injury. Wise’s father played professional football, and his younger brother Daniel played defense for the burgundy & gold in 2021 & 2022.

Washington signed DL Deatrich Wise to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, as @AdamSchefter reported. Wise is a 6-5, 280-pound DE with 34 career sacks in eight seasons with New England. Second Patriot to join the Commanders, along with CB Jonathan Jones.
