NFL Playoffs 2026: Divisional round schedule is set

imagn-24788290.jpg

There were some great games over the NFL’s three day Wild Card Weekend and now we know the matchups for this weekend’s divisional round. We have four games to watch over two days, with an AFC and NFC game each day.

The NFL’s Divisional playoff rounds starts Saturday afternoon with an AFC game between the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos. The Bills are favored on the road against the #1 seed Broncos

The Saturday night game features and NFC West rematch between the No. 6 seed San Francisco 49ers and the No. 1 seed Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers are the heros of the playoffs, knocking last year’s Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Seahawks are big favorites, and won’t their last game against the 49ers to claim the top spot. Can the Niners luck continue against the Super Bowl favorites?

Sunday starts off with the AFC again, The Houston Texans just defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to secure the last spot in the divisional round, and their smothering defense was on display again. The Patriots faced one of the easiest NFL schedules…ever, but they easily took care of the Los Angeles Chargers to move on to the next round.

The divisional round finishes on Sunday night with the Los Angeles Rams visiting the Chicago Bears. The Rams took out the upstart Carolina Panthers in a game that was closer than a lot of people expected. Chicago ended the Green Bay Packers season, and put head coach Matt LaFleur’s job status in the spotlight. Can Chicago continue on the same path the Commanders were on last season with one more win?

Dennard Wilson interviewed for DC

Dennard Wilson is a veteran NFL coach who was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans the last two seasons. He is the latest name added to the Washington Commanders interview list for their open defensive coordinator position.

Wilson, 43, is a Hyatteville, MD native who went to DeMatha High School and played at Maryland. His only season in the NFL was with the Washington Redskins in 2004, playing safety on the practice squad. Wilson entered coaching after an injury ended his first season, going back to DeMatha as their passing game coordinator & DBs coach. He spent two years as a graduate assistant at Maryland before getting his first opportunity to coach in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams as a defensive quality control coach. Wilson spent time with the Jets, Eagles, and Ravens, before getting his first coordinator job with the Titans in 2024.

Joe Cullen interviewed for DC job

Mike Garafolo reports that Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen has interviewed with Washington as the replacement for fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt. This is the first time Cullen’s name has been mentioned nationally this cycle. Back in 2024, prior to Super Bowl LVIII, Kansas City quietly inked him to a contract extension.

Cullen, 58, entered the NFL as a defensive assistant in 2006 with the Lions. He returned to the college ranks in 2009 before the Jaguars hired him as their defensive line coach a year later. He also was the defensive line coach for the Browns (2013), Bucs (2014-15), Ravens (2016-20) and joined the Chiefs in that role in 2022. In 2021, Cullen was the defensive coordinator of the Jaguars.

It would seem that his most obvious link to the Commanders decision-makers may have come from his 3-year stint (’06-‘08) as the Lions defensive line coach when Asst GM Lance Newmark was in Detroit, but relationships in the NFL often run deep.

The #Commanders have interviewed #Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen for their vacant defensive coordinator job, source said. He is a long-time D-line guru and was previously the #Jaguars DC.

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 9, 2026

Drew Terrell

We’ve got another name for the Washington Commanders coaching search. Ian Rapoport reports that Cardinals passing game coordinator/WRs coach Drew Terrell was interviewed for the position. He said the team has also interviewed several internal candidates. Assistant QB coach David Blough was expected to be interviewed, and has interest from other teams like the Lions. Terrell has history in Washington, and was with the team from 2020-2022 under former head coach Ron Rivera. He left for Arizona before the coaching staff was fired after the 2023 season. He was part of Jonathan Gannon’s staff that was just let go.

The #Commanders interviewed #AZCardinals passing game coordinator/WRs coach Drew Terrell for their vacant OC job, sources say. Terrell worked in Washington before AZ.

The team also interviewed several internal candidates.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 9, 2026

Lunda Wells interviewing for OC job

Dan Quinn is trying to hire Dallas Cowboys TE coach Lunda Wells again, or at least interview him for the Washington Commanders open offensive coordinator position. When Quinn was hired as head coach, he attempted to bring Wells with him as his OL coach, but the Cowboys blocked it because it wasnt a promotion. Quinn moved on and hired Bobby Johnson, but he was just fired along with DC Joe Whitt Jr, and OC Kliff Kingsbury(mutually agreed to part ways*).

The Commanders have requested permission to speak with Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells regarding their offensive coordinator opening, according to multiple sources. Wells has been big part of game planning in his 6 seasons. He was on staff with Dan Quinn for 3 years.

— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) January 8, 2026

Update: Mike McDaniel fired by the Dolphins

Mike McDaniel was officially fired by the Miami Dolphins, and he immediately becomes the favorite to be the Washington Commanders new offensive coordinator due to his ties to current head coach Dan Quinn. McDaniel was famously fired by Quinn who encouraged him to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. McDaniel said he is forever indebted to Quinn with his path to sobriety:

Dan Quinn holds a special place in my heart and my career. I think he was there at ground zero when I became sober and supported me and gave me the opportunity to continue what I love to do. So for that, I’ll be forever indebted to him.

I think it speaks to the type of leader he is. I know he really touches every player he coaches from a true, authentic standpoint. I think the Commanders are very fortunate to have him.

Original story

The Washington Commanders moved on from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson yesterday. There are more changes expected with two new coordinators set to be hired. Kingsbury was expected to get head coaching consideration, despite the Commanders 5-12 season, but conflicts about offensive scheme reportedly led Washington to let him go shortly after the season ended.

There was more news from Washington yesterday, with Commanders assistant QB coach David Blough reportedly getting an interview with his former team, the Detroit Lions, for their newly-vacated offensive coordinator job. Johnny Morton was fired after one season of not being able to live up to the legend of Ben Johnson.

Blough was seen as a young, upcoming coach who was being groomed to take over OC when Kingsbury left for a bigger opportunity. QB coach Tavita Pritchard left Washington late last year for the head coaching position at his alma mater, Stanford, and Blough took on a lot of his responsibilities, along with Brian Johnson. Blough, along with other coaches that were seen as Kingsbury guys could also exit after yesterday’s news.

Follow along here for update from Washington’s search, and from other searches around the league. Seven head coaches have already been fired, and a few of them could be candidates for Washington’s coordinator openings.

The Commanders interview Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen; could be underrated hire that improves Washington’s defense

Cullen has been a defensive coach since 1991 and has extensive experience calling plays as a defensive coordinator, most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. Quinn will likely want an experienced defensive coach as the next defensive coordinator, rather than a young coach like David Blough on offense.

The players like Cullen, and he brings an intensity on defense that Quinn would love to have around his scheme. Cullen is another old-school coach who would mesh well with what Quinn wants to do.

Cullen has done a great job with the Chiefs’ defensive line over the last few seasons, and even in a down year this season with a top-10 defense under Steve Spagnuolo. The Chiefs allowed the ninth-lowest rushing yards per game, and that starts up front with Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, and others in the trenches. The Commanders had the third-worst rushing defense in the league, even with the majority of the team’s salary cap invested in Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw.

The Chiefs haven’t invested a lot of draft capital or salary cap on the defensive line, and Cullen still got a lot out of others outside of Jones. The Commanders need to invest and revamp the defensive line this offseason, and not just at the edge position. The defensive tackles have been very disappointing, and hopefully, Cullen could get the most out of Javon Kinlaw and Johnny Newton, while Adam Peters decides on Payne.

Commanders want Bryce Young mentor to coach Jayden Daniels

The Washington Commanders seemingly aren’t done with reshaping their coaching staff on offense, with an emphasis on surrounding star quarterback Jayden Daniels with familiar faces, even one whose biggest claim to fame in the NFL is helping Carolina Panthers signal-caller Bryce Young live up to his draft status.

Young finally played like a No.1 overall pick this season, and assistant quarterbacks coach Mike Bercovici is credited with having “played a big role” in his development. That’s according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, who reported on Monday, January 12 “The #Commanders have requested to interview Panthers assistant QBs coach Mike Bercovici for their QBs coach position on OC David Blough’s staff.”

Bercovici is an ideal candidate to step into the role vacated when David Blough was promoted from Daniels’ position coach to offensive coordinator. As Schultz pointed out, Bercovici “crossed paths with Jayden Daniels at Arizona State in 2019.”

I missed the low-hanging fruit, and arguably the most relevant piece…

Bercovici was on staff when David Blough served as a backup QB for HC Kingsbury in Arizona (2022).

Blough started two games in 2022 replacing the injured… wait for it…
Colt McCoy.

Commanders bring Jonathan Gannon in for DC interview

They could do a lot worse than recently fired Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon, who will be in for an interview this week and will be a hot commodity for several teams looking to fill their defensive coordinator spots.

“Former Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon has a busy week ahead,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on X. ” … his interview schedule is as follows: Cowboys for DC (Tuesday) — Commanders for DC Thursday — Titans for HC Sunday.”

Gannon spent a decade-plus as an NFL defensive assistant before he was hired by the Cardinals as head coach following the 2022 season and following 2 seasons as defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

5 things to know about Commanders OC David Blough

He has a receiving touchdown.

Not many NFL quarterbacks can say they have a receiving touchdown on their resume. Blough only made one career catch during his professional career, but it was a memorable one.

Blough ended up starting the final five games of the Lions’ 2019 with the season finale being a home matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The Lions, who entered the game 3-11-1, were looking for anything to jolt their offense, and that’s exactly what they got on their second drive of the day.

With the ball at the Packers’ 19-yard line, Blough faked a handoff to running back Ty Johnson before flipping the ball back to wide receiver Danny Amendola. Amendola rolled out to his right before passing the ball to Blough, who was wide open for the touchdown. Blough chucked the ball into the stands as a celebration for giving the Lions an early 7-0 lead.

Commanders 2025 position review | Running back

The Commanders had a strong rushing offense for the second straight season, ranking fourth in the league with 134.7 yards on the ground per game. While the loss of Ekeler for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon forced the Commanders to change their plans, they still tied for fourth in the league with 4.7 yards per carry and eighth in rushing touchdowns (20). Even more impressive was that the Commanders pulled this off with just 345 combined carries from their running backs.

Bill and who else? Croskey-Merritt is set to be the only running back on the Commanders’ roster when the new league year begins in March. Rodriguez is a restricted free agent, which means that the Commanders have the right to match any offer he receives in free agency. Rodriguez could come back, but the Commanders would still need to add to the room even if he does re-sign with them. There are some intriguing players set to be available, including Najee Harris, Travis Etienne and Javonte Williams. However, what players the Commanders target will depend on new offensive coordinator David Blough’s vision for the offense.

Washington Post (paywall)

Commanders offseason roster guide

Washington will undergo significant construction this offseason. “We got a lot of work to do,” Coach Dan Quinn admitted.

Washington doesn’t have much money tied up into the future. For the three most expensive players in this category — McLaurin, Sam Cosmi and Javon Kinlaw — 2026 is the final season on their respective deals with any guaranteed money.

This will be a pivotal year for Daniels. Players on rookie contracts are eligible for an extension after three seasons. His play — and availability — in 2026 will dictate how much he’s able to command in the offseason of 2027.

Daron Payne also could be looking for a new deal, but the Commanders might not have the same urgency to extend him. He finished with 46 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks and a pressure rate as a pass rusher of 7.5 percent (27th among defensive tackles who played at least 500 snaps).

If the Commanders trade Payne, they will save roughly $16.8 million in salary cap space.

Salary cap

The NFL hasn’t set the salary cap for the 2026 season, so cap space can only be estimated at this point. Contracts website Spotrac projects the league will increase the salary cap from $279.2 million to $304.3 million. Based on that number, the Commanders would have about $93.6 million in cap space (fifth most in the league). NFL salaries website Over the Cap projects a salary cap of $295.5 million. Based on that number, the Commanders would have about $80.5 million in cap space.

Washington will have ample cap space, and it can create even more by releasing players, making trades, restructuring contracts and signing players to extensions.

Jake Martin : Career-high 5.5 sacks in 2025

Martin had 5.5 sacks among his 39 tackles (17 solo) while playing in all 17 regular-season games in 2025. Martin set new career highs in both sacks and tackles while tacking one pass defensed and one forced fumble onto his ledger. He started 14 games, matching his total from the 2021 season in Houston. Outside of those two campaigns, Martin has only one regular-season start in six other NFL seasons. His career-best output in 2025 should help Martin earn some attention in free agency this offseason.

The lingering question: Is the Eagles’ offensive breakup inevitable?

There is no worse-kept secret in the NFL than the frustration internally and externally with the Eagles’ offensive coaching this season. Coordinator Kevin Patullo, promoted to replace the outgoing Kellen Moore, has been a longtime assistant for coach Nick Sirianni. But Patullo was evidently underqualified for his role. Wide receiver A.J. Brown was visibly upset to varying degrees throughout the year. Running back Saquon Barkley was not nearly as productive as he was last season. Quarterback Jalen Hurts continued to struggle with throwing to the middle of the field.

There will almost certainly be a new offensive coordinator in Philadelphia next season — the fifth in five years. But perhaps the greatest question is if anything else will be new in the Eagles’ offense? Brown, who went over 20 minutes of game clock in the second half without a target and was seen arguing with Sirianni on the sideline, was a rumored target for many teams at the trade deadline. His contract represents a substantial dead cap ($66.9 million) if he’s traded, and he would likely have to collaborate with the Eagles’ front office and finagle the finances if he demands a trade.

Other than Brown, tight end (and key red zone option) Dallas Goedert will be a free agent. At 31, he’ll want to cash in on what probably will be his final good years, and the Eagles don’t have a ton of cap space to pay him. But they also don’t have a good TE2 waiting in the wings. Right tackle Lane Johnson, a franchise mainstay for more than a decade, missed the end of the season because of a foot injury and will turn 36 this spring. How much longer does he want to play — and how effective would he be? It feels like a bigger change than a mere coordinator switch is on the horizon for Philadelphia’s offense as the Eagles look to get back on top of the NFC.

Bowen: Thank God that’s over, now the Eagles need to fix this

Looking to this offseason, I have two main points, which are probably the same as your main points – we all watched the same crap.

The first is offensive scheme and playcalling, big surprise. There is just no way forward with this unimaginative, dreary, poorly sequenced attack. The problem isn’t just Kevin Patullo, a lot of it is what Nick Sirianni is comfortable with and what Jalen Hurts is comfortable with. Going forward, I’m fine with them both being uncomfortable. Bring in a fresh offensive mind and give that person total control.

I don’t care about Sirianni’s feelings, and I don’t care how many offensive coordinators in how many years Hurts has had. It would be absurd to fire Sirianni a year after a dominating Super Bowl victory, but if he wants to quit rather than give up say over the offense, I’d be fine with that. Someone asked me this after Sunday’s game: “If the Eagles fired Nick Sirianni, who hires him as their head coach?” Quite possibly nobody, which is kind of amazing and probably worthy of another column at some point.

#Eagles QB Jalen Hurts on if he wants OC Kevin Patullo back in 2026: "It's too soon to think about that. I put my trust in Howie, Nick, and Mr. Lurie."

Not exactly an endorsement…

Texans-Steelers on Wild Card Weekend Monday: What We Learned from Houston’s 30-6 win

Houston’s S.W.A.R.M. defense suffocates Steelers. The Texans’ calling card has long been their league-best defense and the unit did not disappoint Monday night, keeping Houston in a tight, low-scoring contest by repeatedly shutting down Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers and eventually breaking the door down by getting involved in the scoring themselves.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins took a tense game and turned it permanently in favor of the visiting Texans when he split a sack with Will Anderson Jr., forced a fumble, snatched the live ball from the pile of bodies and sprinted to the end zone, giving the Texans a 17-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. The 11-point advantage instantly felt insurmountable for the Steelers because of the elite resistance they faced.

Houston held Pittsburgh to 2 of 14 on third down on the night, forced six punts, shut down Pittsburgh’s two most promising drives short of the Houston 10-yard line (resulting in two Chris Boswell field goals) and slammed the door definitively by scoring two defensive touchdowns in the final period, punctuating a run to the playoffs that has been powered by DeMeco Ryans’ elite unit.

Texans defense tonight …

• 153 yards allowed.
• 11 first downs given up.
• 3 takeaways.
• 2 touchdowns scored.
• 4 sacks.
• 12 QB hits.
• 7 tackles for losses.

Rodgers’ storybook run fizzles out. The 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers entered Wild Card Weekend on a bit of a roll of late, helping the Steelers win four of their final games to secure the AFC North title and a home playoff game.

Yes, their offense had issues, but Steelers fans had reason to feel optimistic entering the first round of the postseason. Unlike previous playoff runs, Pittsburgh had a veteran quarterback capable of throwing it to victory. But clues of an eventual demise first surfaced two weeks earlier when the Steelers managed just six points in an upset loss to a team with another strong defense in Cleveland. This time around, they were facing a defensive beast that was vastly upgraded by comparison and the results proved it. Rodgers leaned into the quick-fire approach that propelled the Steelers to the playoffs early in the contest, leading a promising first-quarter drive that covered 58 yards before stalling in Houston’s red zone. It would end up being their most productive possession of the night.

Rodgers found himself under frequent duress from there, facing pressure on 45.9% of his total dropbacks. He was sacked four times, fumbled twice, lost one of them, completed just 5 of 13 attempts under pressure for 47 yards and didn’t end up standing a chance against Houston’s defense, throwing a pick-six on his final attempt of the night. Instead of using his arm and two decades’ worth of experience to guide the Steelers to their first postseason victory since 2016, Rodgers became the latest Pittsburgh quarterback to spend his final moments in a somber, expressionless state on the bench. We’ll see if it was his last time on an NFL field.

Bills lose Gabe Davis to torn ACL

For the second straight year, wide receiver Gabe Davis suffered a major left knee injury, this time a torn ACL, coach Sean McDermott said Monday.

Davis returned to the Bills this season after he played 10 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 before suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee. He was able to return to the field with Buffalo in Week 11, playing in six regular-season games and Sunday’s wild-card win at Jacksonville.

Buffalo also will be without starting safety Jordan Poyer on Saturday after a hamstring injury kept him out of the second half against the Jaguars.

The Washington Commanders were hoping to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, and that is happening today. His contract is expiring, but Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has already said he’d like him back if he doesn’t get an opportunity to be a head coach again during this hiring cycle. The Commanders could use someone of Flores’s coaching pedigree, but he is in high demand, and a lot of people expect him to stay in Minnesota.

Washington interviews Seahawks DB coach/pass game coordinator Karl Scott

The Washington Commanders added another name to their defensive coordinator search list today. ESPN’s John Keim reports they have interviewed Seattle Seahawks DBs coach/pass game coordinator Karl Scott for the position formerly held by Joe Whitt Jr. He has been coaching since 2007, but didn’t get a job in the NFL until 2021 as a DBs coach with the Minnesota Vikings.

Scott has been with the Seahawks since 2022, and is highly-regarded around the league. The Seahawks have one of the top defenses in the league, and have several players Washington could be interested in adding in free agency this year. Scott is also the only known candidate who doesn’t have past experience as a DC.

Washington interviewed Seattle DB coach/pass game coordinator Karl Scott per me and @BradyHenderson for their defensive coordinator opening. He's the only one they've interviewed without prior DC experience. They will meet with Jonathan Gannon Thursday.

Dennard Wilson interviewed for DC job

NFC East News: New York Giants finalizing deal to hire John Harbaugh

imagn-6875804.jpg

There are currently 9 open head coaching jobs in the NFL, and the first domino is reportedly falling with the news that John Harbaugh is finalizing a deal to become the New York Giants’ next head coach. Harbaugh was considered the top target for several teams looking to make a change. He was let go by the Baltimore Ravens after 18 seasons, and reportedly had big demands for his next team.

The New York Giants will now be on their 5th head coach(not counting two interims) since Tom Coughlin was fired during the 2015 season. There has not been a lot of success associated with that franchise over the last decade, and ownership has continued to try different people with similar results. Brian Daboll was fired during another disappointing season with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka taking over to play out the string.

Every NFC East team will have at least one new coach next season, but the Giants were the only one replacing their head coach. The Washington Commanders fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and they’re still looking for his replacement. They “mutually agreed to part ways” with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and hired assistant QB coach David Blough to replace him. The Eagles are looking for a new OC, and the Cowboys need a DC. Fun times in the division.

John Harbaugh and the Giants are working to finalize an agreement to make him New York’s next head coach and, barring a setback, a deal is expected, multiple sources tell ESPN.

With the United Football League in the midst of draft season ahead of their 2026 season, the reigning champion DC Defenders have drafted Gabe Taylor, brother of former Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

NEWS: The DC Defenders have signed defensive back Gabe Taylor, brother of former Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

Taylor played four seasons at Rice, totaling 236 total tackles and 10 interceptions.#UFL pic.twitter.com/Y1giPwwSD0

— Christian Paolantonio (@CPaolantonio_) January 15, 2026

Gabe played his college ball at Rice University, where he spent five seasons and 49 games, finishing with 236 total tackles and 10 interceptions.

After going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Gabe Taylor received an invite to the Washington Commanders rookie mini-camp. Taylor did not sign an NFL contract following rookie camp, and has remained unsigned since.

Taylor’s biggest liability comes from his size, listed at 5’9 190 lbs., but he makes up for it with his speed and superb range on the backend. Taylor consistently ran 40 yard-dash in the 4.38-4.44 range at his Rice Pro Day, placing himself in a special category.

On the 14th anniversary of his older brother Sean Taylor’s passing, Rice’s Gabe Taylor just sealed a win for his team with this INT 🙏

While Taylor played safety at Rice, he was listed as a cornerback when the Defenders announced his draft selection, so it remains to be seen where he lines up this spring.

Taylor joins a defensive backs room in DC that currently includes Deandre Baker, Lewis Cine, Ekow Boye-Doe, Bryce Thompson, Azizi Hearn, Kiondre Thomas, Leon O’Neal Jr., Trey Dean III, Sam Kidd, Kai Nacua, Deontay Anderson, and Maceo Beard-Aigert.

UFL players will begin reporting to camp in just over a month, as the league kicks off on Friday, March 27th. Keep an eye out for the UFL’s official schedule release on January 22nd.

Film Session: Can Johnny Newton develop into a 3-down lineman?

gettyimages-2253663341.jpg

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Johnny Newton is entering a critical offseason of his rookie contract. Newton had a relatively quiet second season before his stat-stuffing performance against the Dallas Cowboys, when he compiled three sacks, five quarterback hits, two TFLs, and nine tackles. Not to suggest he didn’t have his “moments,” but the former 2024 second-round pick had not truly put his stamp on the games he played in yet. Newton saw 38 percent of defensive snaps in 2025, which is a 13 percent decrease from his rookie season. Granted, in 2024, former Commanders’ defensive tackle Jonathan Allen’s injury impacted Newton’s increased usage.

Newton’s vision of the football stands out, and he has an excellent motor that allows him to stay in most plays. While he flashes with his hand usage, it is inconsistent, and currently lacks secondary or tertiary moves that help win engagements. Newton is quick as well and shows flashes of it occasionally, but he can improve his lower-body and core strength.

In this Trap or Dive film session, I studied Johnny Newton’s last few games of the season. I detailed which alignment he had most success with, what he wins with as a pass rusher and run defender, and the inconsistencies that are hindering his impact heading into his third season.

Like, Subscribe, and comment your thoughts on the Newton’s ceiling heading into year three.

Washington Commanders Coaching Search Tracker: Former NFL QB hired as assistant QB coach

Danny Etling hired as assistant QB coach

The Washington Commanders have hired their third new coach on offense, adding former NFL QB Danny Etling as assistant QB coach. He will work under new offensive coordinator David Blough and QB coach D.J. Williams. Blough was given the promotion from assistant QB to OC after Kliff Kingsbury’s departure earlier this month. Etling never played in a regular season NFL game, and spent the last two seasons in the UFL with the Michigan Panthers. This will be his first coaching job after retiring from playing football. Etling and Blough were teammates in college at Purdue.

The #Commanders are hiring former LSU and NFL QB Danny Etling as assistant quarterbacks coach, sources tell @CBSSports.

Was a 2018 draft pick of the Patriots and then spent six seasons in the NFL as a player. Now set to return to the NFL as a coach. pic.twitter.com/sWehXJjedo

D.J. Williams hired as QB Coach to replace Tavita Pritchard and to work under David Blough

The Commanders front office has been searching for a QB coach ever since announcing David Blough’s promotion last week. Today Adam Schefter and others reported the hiring of D.J. Williams, son of Washington legend Doug Williams, for the role.

Commanders are hiring former Falcons QBs coach D.J. Williams as their QB coach, per sources. D.J. is the son of Washington legend Doug Williams, an executive in the Commanders’ front office.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 15, 2026

After 2 years of entry level work in with the Saints, Williams joined the NFL coaching ranks as an offensive assistant for New Orleans in 2019. Williams was hired as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Falcons in 2024, and promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2025. The Atlanta staff is in flux following the firing of head coach Raheem Morris, and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is seen as an attractive candidate for a number of teams trying to replace defensive coordinators, including the Commanders.

D.J. is the first new coach to join David Blough’s staff. The Commanders also interviewed Mike Bercovici, the Panthers assistant quarterback coach, for the position.

Brian Flores interviewing today

The Washington Commanders were hoping to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, and that is happening today. His contract is expiring, but Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has already said he’d like him back if he doesn’t get an opportunity to be a head coach again during this hiring cycle. The Commanders could use someone of Flores’s coaching pedigree, but he is in high demand, and a lot of people expect him to stay in Minnesota.

The #Commanders are, in fact, interviewing Brian Flores for their DC job today, source said. https://t.co/LcOZvqqXyt

Everything there is to know (currently) about the Commanders new stadium at the RFK stadium campus is available in one place

temp-cover-photo.jpg

A 35-page document that has been submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission for review.

The full document is available for review by clicking HERE.

The document does not answer every question about the stadium — it primarily addresses how the stadium fits into the surrounding area and complies with legal requirements.

You won’t find seating area design, discussion of the food service or what type of field surface is planned.

This is still a broad-brush document, but even with its limited scope, it is interesting and provides a lot of good information.

Here are just a few excerpts and highlights from that document:

NFL Divisional Playoffs: Buffalo Bills vs Denver Broncos

gettyimages-2193026280.jpg

The divisional round of the playoffs is here and we’ve got two games today. The AFC kicks off a great weekend of football with the Buffalo Bills visiting the Denver Broncos. The Bills defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 27-24 thriller last week to earn their ticket to the next round. The Broncos had the best record in the AFC, and will come into today’s game well rested after their first-round bye. Josh Allen took a beating last week, but he’s on a quest for his first Super Bowl ring. Can second-year QB and the Broncos defense kill those dreams again, or will Allen advance to the Conference Championship Game and not have to worry about Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow?
