Commanders vs Eagles Thursday Injury Report: Another OL added to the list

gettyimages-2215279627.jpg

The Washington Commanders were inside the bubble for today’s practice due to high winds in Ashburn, VA. The team is preparing to travel to Philadelphia on Sunday to face the Eagles in the season finale. It’s the holiday season, and that means some players have been dealing with illness over the past few weeks. Last week Chris Rodriguez Jr. missed the Cowboys game on Christmas day due to illness. Bill Croskey-Merritt missed practice yesterday, but was a full participant today. WR Treylon Burks is the latest player to get hit with an illness, and he didn’t practice.

Two other players who didn’t practice today, and they are both expected to miss Sunday’s game. Dan Quinn said QB Marcus Mariota was doubtful due to the quad injury he’s still dealing with. Laremy Tunsil is also a long-shot to play as he’s still dealing with the oblique injury that kept him inactive for the last two games. Brandon Coleman has filled in at LT, but he was added to today’s injury list with a knee injury. Tomorrow’s practice will be a big one for him.

Daron Payne (back) and LB Nick Bellore (concussion) both missed the Cowboys game, but were full participants again today. Payne and Bellore are on track to play in the season finale.

15. Washington Commanders (Down 7)

Projected Week 18 starters:

LT Brandon Coleman
LG Chris Paul
C Nick Allegretti
RG Andrew Wylie
RT Josh Conerly Jr.

The Commanders placed right guard Sam Cosmi on injured reserve last week due to a concussion, which thrust Nick Allegretti into the lineup against the Cowboys on Christmas Day. Allegretti struggled and earned a 44.9 PFF pass-blocking grade, though.

To make matters worse, center Tyler Biadasz suffered a lower leg injury in the loss. As a result, Allegretti moved inside to center and Andrew Wylie entered the game at right guard. Wylie earned a 42.3 PFF overall grade against the Cowboys in Week 17.

Best player: Chris Paul

Paul’s 77.0 PFF pass-blocking grade this season ranks sixth among all guards.

Practice notes | Johnny Newton ‘wreaked havoc’ in opportunity as starter

Newton, lined up to the fight of center Cooper Beebe, had to fight off a double team and then go around fellow defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, which ended up obscuring him from Prescott’s view. The next thing the quarterback knew, he was getting slung to the ground for an eight-yard loss.

That opportunity came last week when it was announced that Daron Payne would miss the rematch against the Cowboys with a back injury. Although the Commanders fell to 4-12 with a 30-23 loss, Newton provided a glimpse of what his future could hold with three sacks and five quarterback hits, both of which were single-game career highs.

Pro Football Focus gave him the seventh best pass rush grade among defensive tackles in Week 17 ahead of players like Jalen Carter and Quinnen Williams.

It was an encouraging sign for what could come next in Newton’s career.

It was the first multi-sack game of his career, and he became the first [Washington] player to record at least 3.0 sacks in a single game since Preston Smith in Week 16 of 2015. His five quarterback hits were the most in a single game since Ryan Kerrigan (5) in Week 6 of the 2016 season.

It’s unclear what Newton’s workload will be in Week 18 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Daron Payne returned to practice as a full participant from his back injury, which would put him in line to return as the starter. But Newton showed that he can be a disruptive pass rusher, as he accounted for half of the Commanders’ six sacks.

NFL head coaching carousel intel, latest Week 18 buzz, news

League sources consider it likely that Washington makes a change at defensive coordinator after Joe Whitt Jr. was stripped of playcalling duties earlier this season. The Commanders are 31st in total defense. Injuries and a lack of pass rush personnel have contributed, but coach Dan Quinn faces a critical third season in Washington and appears poised to make changes. Quinn has been calling the defense; whether he continues to do so will depend on an offseason review.

• Kingsbury’s head coaching candidacy is interesting despite Washington’s struggles. The Commanders rank 21st in total offense — ahead of Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh — despite a poor supporting cast ravaged by injury. He’s a potential fit in Tennessee, with a young quarterback in Cam Ward who fits his style of offense. Las Vegas, should that job open as many around the league expect, will take a hard look at improving its offense. Kingsbury has been selective but is also open to becoming a head coach again. So while he’s not the shiniest name because of Washington’s record, I could see him being in the mix again.

• Former Giants coach Brian Daboll should be a viable offensive coordinator option for teams looking to hire one. He could get head coaching interviews, as well. He has significant playcalling experience and did some good things with Jaxson Dart before his November firing.

Heavy.com

Treylon Burks : Misses practice Thursday

Burks (illness) did not practice Thursday. Burks wasn’t listed on Wednesday’s injury report, an indication that his illness is a new development. Unless he’s able to resume practicing in full Friday, it appears that Burks will be assigned an injury designation for Washington’s season finale against the Eagles on Sunday, for which third-string quarterback Josh Johnson is trending toward another start.

Riggo’s Rag

Commanders must give their defense the offseason attention it deserves

There is a significant amount of hard work ahead. John Keim of ESPN believes this should all start with a defensive overhaul. And after watching this unit completely capitulate once again in 2025, anything less is organizational malpractice.

“In training camp, Washington’s defense often outplayed an offense without wide receiver Terry McLaurin, among other players. The defense appeared to be sound. Turns out, that was a mirage. The Commanders’ D enters the season finale ranked 31st in takeaways, 27th in points allowed, 29th in the red zone, 30th versus the run and 30th in yards allowed per play. Coach Dan Quinn took over playcalling duties from coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. in Week 11. The Commanders will need to settle the coordinator duties while seeking upgrades to every level of their defense. “John Keim

Keim isn’t alone. Fans are clamoring for the Commanders to get younger and more explosive on defense. There are too many aging veterans past their prime, and there are too many young breakout hopefuls who just haven’t come close to meeting expectations. Nothing but a complete revamp will do. And make no mistake; this should be the most pressing priority above all else.

Commanders vs Eagles Friday Injury Report: OL depth is questionable for the season finale

The Washington Commanders held their third, and final practice of the week, and their last full practice of the season.. The team is preparing to travel to Philadelphia on Sunday to face the Eagles. Dan Quinn said QB Marcus Mariota was doubtful due to the quad injury and he’s now done for the season. Josh Johnson steps in for the second week and he’ll have Jeff Driskel and Sam Hartman to back him up. Jayden Daniels was already ruled out for the final three games of the season, but wasn’t placed on injured reserve so he could continue to practice with the team.

Laremy Tunsil was also ruled out due to the oblique injury that kept him inactive for the last two games. Brandon Coleman has filled in at LT, but he was added to yesterday’s injury list with a knee injury, and he’s listed as questionable for the game. Washington has Trent Scott and George Fant available if Coleman can’t play, or has to leave the game. Andrew Wylie is also a tackle option, but he’s already filling in at right guard for Sam Cosmi.

Two players missed a practice this week due to illness, but they were both full participants in practice today. Bill Croskey-Merritt was out on Wednesday, and WR Treylon Burks caught the bug yesterday. Last week it was Chris Rodriguez Jr. was added to the injury list on Christmas morning, and didn’t play vs the Cowboys.

Daron Payne (back) and LB Nick Bellore (concussion) both missed the Cowboys game, but were full participants all week. They should both be good to go for the season finale.

Exit interviews: Commanders reflect on how this season turned so sour

A year after their surprising run to the NFC title game, the Commanders are back to being bottom-dwellers. They sit at 4-12 entering Sunday’s season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, closer to the top of April’s NFL draft than a return to the playoffs.

For a team that retained nearly its entire coaching staff, brought back most of its starters and traded future draft picks to acquire proven veterans Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel Sr. in the offseason, it’s a staggering outcome with no simple explanation.

Injuries — including the dislocated left elbow that knocked Daniels out of Washington’s loss to the Seahawks — tell part of the story. By season’s end, the Commanders will have had 32 players miss at least 156 games. But the collapse has been multifaceted.

The roster, as assembled by General Manager Adam Peters, is the oldest in the NFL and lacked the depth to compensate for injuries to key players. The offense struggled with consistency and discipline. The defense missed tackles and blew assignments at inopportune moments.

The Commanders had their moments offensively, but consistency eluded them. Defensively, it was a season-long slog. Coach Dan Quinn took over play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. in Week 11, but the unit remained one of the worst in the NFL.

It will likely be an offseason of significant change. Whitt’s future in Washington is in doubt, and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury could draw interest from other teams with openings for a head coach. A departure could have ripple effects on the rest of the staff.

Meanwhile, the roster has 35 players who are set to become free agents and a collection of others whom the team may move on from for salary cap reasons. And, of course, there will be newcomers added via trade, free agency and the draft.

For those who remain, the lessons of 2025 could prove useful in avoiding a repeat in 2026.

The Washington Post spoke with 17 of the 33players who are under contract next year. Together, they painted a nuanced portrait of when and why a promising year unraveled — and how the franchise can get back on track in 2026.

The Athletic (paywall)

The Commanders’ offseason to-do list has some clear priorities. Here are the biggest

When Quinn was hired, he said he didn’t want to repeat any perceived mistakes from his first go-round as a head coach, in Atlanta from 2015-2020. He learned in those years that he was a better coach when he was fully attentive to all three phases and delegated to his staff. It’s largely why he didn’t assume play-calling duties here and instead tabbed Joe Whitt Jr. to run the defense.

Washington enters Week 18 ranked 31st in the league in both defensive total EPA (-132.05) and turnover margin (-12), with the second-most explosive plays allowed (130) and the highest rate of opponent down set conversions (78.6 percent), according to TruMedia.

Extend a pair of valuable veterans

Tunsil’s first year as Washington’s left tackle showed why he’s been a Pro Bowl selection five times.

Keeping Tunsil won’t be cheap, but such is the price for an elite left tackle. And surely Washington didn’t give up four draft picks to keep him around for only two seasons.

Re-upping center Biadasz could be next. The 28-year-old has been one of Washington’s most reliable and consistent players since joining in ‘24. Keeping him for the long term would allow Washington to keep its front five intact for at least a couple more years

Weigh some necessary veteran cuts

There’s no recouping the lost picks, but cutting Lattimore would save $18.5 million in salary cap space (he has a $2 million roster bonus due in March, and a $16.5 million salary for 2026).

The Athletic (paywall)

What I’m hearing about the NFL coaching carousel

Commanders coach Dan Quinn is expected back for the 2026 season, though changes to the offense and the defense remain possible after Washington has slumped to a 4-12 record. Quinn took over defensive play calling from Joe Whitt Jr. in early November, and Washington has also had conversations about potentially moving on from Kingsbury even if he doesn’t get a head-coaching job. Some in the building say there’s been a disconnect between Kingsbury and general manager Adam Peters. When was the last time we were watching to see if an offensive coordinator was going to get fired while he was also preparing for head coaching interviews? We’ll see how this shakes out.

Two notes from Fowlers article

1. The owner in Tennessee seems really stupid.
2. Kliff might get more looks simply because of the lack of offensive HC candidates…hmmm#RaiseHail pic.twitter.com/KBsr4wIDz9

3 keys to Commanders vs. Eagles

Execute in winning time moments.

The Commanders struggles with execution have been an issue all season, but it was so prevalent against the Dallas Cowboys during their Christmas game that head coach Dan Quinn called it out during his postgame press game press conference and on Monday. While he loves the team’s desire to fight, he said, that alone is not enough for them to win.

The Commanders had multiple opportunities to come away with what would have been their first home win since Week 3. Two trips inside the Cowboys’ 5-yard line ended with field goals, rather than touchdowns, and the offense couldn’t take advantage of a missed field goal from Brandon Aubrey and had to punt not long after. On defense, the Commanders forced the Cowboys into six fourth down situations but allowed them convert each one.

The Commanders had a similar situation against the Eagles on in Week 16. They managed to build a 10-7 lead at halftime but struggled on offense once Marcus Mariota left the game. The defense went on to allow 22 unanswered points from the Eagles, making the odds of a comeback slim.

Heavy.com

Nick Bellore : Cleared to play Sunday

Bellore (concussion) doesn’t carry an injury designation into Sunday’s game against the Eagles, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Bellore missed the Week 17 loss to the Cowboys, but the special-teamer is good to go for the regular-season finale. The 36-year-old Bellore has logged 11 tackles (seven solo) across 321 special-teams snaps.

A to Z Sports

Commanders were at the Oregon and Texas Tech game; got a good look at David Baily, a big favorite to be drafted by Washington in the 1st round

The Commanders had scouts at the Oregon and Texas Tech Orange Bowl game in the College Football Playoff, and got to see one playmaker who is a huge target to land in Washington in Arpil.

The Washington Commanders still have one game left in the season, but they’re on the road watching the best games in the College Football Playoff, as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Scouting is a year-long process, and going to a game to watch it live is a big part of the scouts’ travel schedule during the year to see critical must-see matchups. The Commanders had scouts at the Oregon and Texas Tech Orange Bowl game in the College Football Playoff, and got to see one playmaker who is a huge target to land in Washington in Arpil.

EDGE rusher David Bailey didn’t disappoint in his final college game, and the Commanders had to be impressed with what they saw.

David Bailey dominates against Oregon in CFB Playoff showdown

The Commanders need a pass rusher this offseason, and there’s no doubt that David Bailey is the best pure pass rusher in the 2026 NFL Draft. Rueben Bain Jr. had a massive game against Ohio State, and plays with a lot of strength, but he doesn’t have the speed and pass-rush moveset that Bailey has. It didn’t take long for Bailey to show up against the Ducks, and he had a sack in the first drive that flashed his speed around the edge.

David Bailey sack pic.twitter.com/j5AKgVnV7i

— Billy M (@BillyM_91) January 1, 2026

Can David Bailey be a good enough run stopper?

For as good a pass rusher as he is, people will question if he can play all three downs as a dependable run stopper, and he made his case against a really good Oregon rushing attack as well. Bain is surely the better run stopper between the two, but Bailey’s speed and ability to explode in the backfield showed themselves as well.

Riggo’s Rag

Commanders have a simple decision to make with Marshon Lattimore this offseason

The veteran cornerback was a bombshell trade acquisition before the 2024 deadline, signaling the Commanders’ return to contention. It hasn’t gone according to plan, and the chances of him being around in 2026 seem remote.

Lattimore’s hamstring injury upon joining the Commanders hindered his ability to make an immediate impact. Hopes were high that the four-time Pro Bowler could regain his old form this season, but he quickly became a weak link. And his torn ACL sustained against the Seattle Seahawks represented the final body blow.

Releasing Lattimore this offseason comes with no dead money and saves $18.5 million on Washington’s salary cap next season. This would take Peters’ available financial resources to more than $100 million, so it seems like a no-brainer.

Riggo’s Rag

Adam Peters should be preparing for Lance Newmark’s eventual exit

Washington Commanders’ assistant general manager Lance Newmark was named by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated as a potential future NFL general manager. It is the second straight year he has made this list.

Breer collects the names of the hottest candidates by querying executives and scouts from all over the league. This year, he included 26 staffers, about half of whom are currently serving as assistant general managers.

Eagles left tackle admits he’s contemplated an early retirement

Mailata, like Jason Kelce before him, has taken on a mentor role in the Eagles’ locker room, and like the former All-Pro center, Mailata will play a role in finding his eventual successor. While speaking with NJ Advance Media’s Cayden Steele, Mailata hinted at an early retirement, but only after he finds his replacement.

“I care a lot, man,” Mailata said. “I care a lot because I only have so long to play this game, man. Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you can play another five years.’ Yeah, bulls—. I’m already in the phase of bringing the next guy along with me. Who’s it gonna be? I can’t tell you, but it’s a high standard playing in this city, so just gotta keep that going. And for me it’s just, I want the best for those boys. I am always going to root for the underdog.”

“In a sense, I’d feel a type of way,” Mailata said about not finding his replacement before retirement. “You just want to leave it in a good place. Leave it as you found it.”

Eagles QB Tanner McKee excited to face Commanders in Week 18

The 25-year-old McKee is in his third NFL season. He has appeared in five games, making only one start. McKee started the 2024 regular-season finale against the New York Giants and completed 27 of 41 passes (65.9%) for 269 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles, in a similar position, rested their starters and defeated New York 20-13.

Philadelphia coaches and players believe in McKee. As for McKee, he prepares every week like he’s going to start, but understands it’s different.

“Obviously super excited for the opportunity,” McKee said Friday, via Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia. “But I feel like each week leading up, I’ve been preparing like I’m going to play in case I do. So I feel like preparation has been pretty similar. It’s nice to get more reps in practice, obviously. But really excited for the opportunity.”

Commanders (4-12) at Eagles (11-5)

4:25 p.m. ET | CBS | PHI -4.5 (38.5 O/U)

What we’re hearing on the Commanders:
With LT Laremy Tunsil unlikely to play because of an oblique injury, Washington would be without 11 players who were projected starters this season. But even in a lost season, the Commanders have a few things at stake: LB Bobby Wagner needs five tackles to become the third player to reach 2,000 for his career; DE Von Miller needs another sack to give him nine and another $500,000. The Commanders can’t finish lower than seventh in the draft, but a loss Sunday could improve their pick. — John Keim

What we’re hearing on the Eagles: Philadelphia is planning to sit QB Jalen Hurts and other starters as the Eagles gear up for the playoffs. Coach Nick Sirianni is prioritizing giving some of his key players rest after another marathon season. “For the guys who are actually down this week, it’s a mental break. They need the mental break,” tackle Jordan Mailata said. “And that physical break is a huge aspect; now they can just focus on getting right for playoffs. For us, it’s the biggest advantage possible. It’s like another bye week.” — Tim McManus

Stat to know: Commanders RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the past three games. He could join Antonio Gibson, Alfred Morris and Skip Hicks as the only Washington rookies with a rushing score in four or more consecutive games. — ESPN Research

NFL Week 18 picks: Upset and score predictions, matchup breakdowns for every game

temp-eagles-game.jpg

Why Brooke picked the Eagles: Two weeks ago, Philly defeated Washington by 11 points in a game Marcus Mariota started but couldn’t finish. This time around, Mariota (hand/quad) is unlikely to take the field at all, while the Eagles reportedly are expected to rest Jalen Hurts and most starters. So gear up for this Tanner McKee vs. Josh Johnson thriller? OK, that might be a stretch.

My trust in this one rests on one person: Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. His unit has hit its stride in the second half of the season, ranking first in the NFL with 14.5 points per game allowed since Week 10. It also has at least one takeaway in eight straight games. I get that many of this unit’s stars won’t be on the field, but Fangio knows how to get the most out of the guys who are available. I don’t see that D completely folding against an already-struggling Commanders offense trotting out a 39-year-old third-string QB.

The Raiders’ future

The Las Vegas Raiders have an inside track to the No. 1 pick in April’s draft and are likely headed toward a head-coaching change in 2026. That’s a significant amount of potential turnover, and the bigger question might not be whether 74-year-old Pete Carroll is dismissed, but who ultimately makes that decision. Is it principal owner Mark Davis? Minority owner Tom Brady? General manager John Spytek?

Maxx Crosby’s Raiders future is also being questioned around the league. Las Vegas shut down its five-time Pro Bowler last week against his wishes, and the relationship between the sides remains strained. It’s a dramatic shift from just two months ago, when Crosby and Davis nixed any trade discussions ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline. Many believe Las Vegas will be open to moving its star pass rusher if the relationship remains at an impasse, allowing Crosby, who will turn 29 this summer, an opportunity to compete on a team built to win now.

Why Vikings’ plan for J.J. McCarthy failed — and what’s next

McCarthy’s performance, when he wasn’t missing seven games because of three separate injuries, was at times so concerning that it was reasonable to suggest he should be replaced after one season. The more likely outcome is the Vikings having a renewed interest in adding a starting-caliber veteran to pair and possibly compete with McCarthy, according to league sources. That potential move would create a more robust quarterback room than the one that doomed them in 2025.

McCarthy demonstrated some progress during a December winning streak, but it came in games against three of the NFL’s worst defenses. Entering Week 18, McCarthy’s QBR (33.9) ranks 46th out of 58 quarterbacks who have made at least one start. He has had only two games with more than 200 passing yards.

What made the Vikings think McCarthy was prepared to lead a playoff team? Why did they spend $350 million on the 2025 roster but end up with a thin quarterback room after having veterans Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones on their roster and receiving interest from Aaron Rodgers? Why did McCarthy play so poorly earlier this season — and what will become of him in 2026?

ESPN has tracked the transition since it began last spring and spoke to league and team sources about it. One of the clear takeaways is that Jones’ decision to sign with the Indianapolis Colts upended the Vikings’ plan far more than previously known. There is also widespread agreement that the Vikings overestimated McCarthy’s floor as a first-year starter.

The most optimistic spin, Warner said, is that McCarthy needs more time before a full judgment can be made.

[T]he Vikings envisioned Jones as a starting-caliber hedge against McCarthy’s inexperience and health. Team officials sensed strong positive vibes from Jones throughout the fall and winter, and they believed he would sign their offer, which was competitive with the $14 million deal he ultimately signed with the Colts.

But the Vikings had misread Jones’ level of interest in their scheme and culture. He liked the organization and the people in it, but business was business. A league source said the Colts offered the best “fit.” In other words, Jones wanted to be on the field in 2025 and thought he had a better chance of overtaking the Colts’ young quarterback — third-year pro Anthony Richardson Sr. — than McCarthy.

By default, the Vikings had made McCarthy their unquestioned starter. When the Seahawks made veteran backup Sam Howell available via trade on the final day of the draft, Adofo-Mensah took the deal.

McCarthy’s arm strength is NFL-caliber, [Kurt] Warner said, but his tendency to throw maximum-velocity passes decreases the time that receivers can adjust to inaccurate throws in the air. And Warner said it is a “very hard and very rare thing” for a player to dramatically improve accuracy at the pro level.

The Vikings thought they had surrounded him with receivers talented enough to overcome those imperfect throws, but if anything, the inconsistency of his passes seemed to have the opposite effect.

Receiver Justin Jefferson’s drop rate this season is a career-high 3.2%, nearly twice his previous career average. Tight end T.J. Hockenson’s drop rate (7.6%) more than quadrupled, as did receiver Jordan Addison’s (9.3%).

The Vikings tied for No. 30 in the NFL in completion percentage above expected (-3.5%). McCarthy and his receivers share responsibility for those numbers, but Warner said it demonstrates his view that McCarthy isn’t a “natural thrower.”

In Week 10, McCarthy referred to a competitive alter ego he called “Nine,” creating what will likely be a lifetime social media meme. He also tested the coaching staff’s patience by launching into a touchdown celebration 5 yards before scoring in Week 15 against the Cowboys. Days before, he had bobbled the ball during a similar celebration in practice and was told not to try it in a game.

In a news conference afterward, McCarthy admitted he was actually “more enticed” to celebrate after hearing the warning.

Speaking specifically about “Nine” during his weekly appearance on KFAN-100.3, O’Connell said an NFL quarterback needs confidence and a “comfort” in themselves.

Can Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell commit another season to his development?

The Vikings likely will be connected to every rumor about possible trades for an established starter

What almost everyone agreed on, however, is that the Vikings can’t fail again to acquire a veteran quarterback who can provide what Darnold delivered in 2024 and what they hoped Jones would give them in 2025.

Saturday Night Football: Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers

gettyimages-2234189339.jpg

The NFL has two games on it’s Week 17 Saturday slate and they’re both huge games to decide division titles. The Seattle Seahawks are traveling south to take on the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West title. The winner clinches the No. 1 seed in the NFC, a first-round bye, home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and the NFC West title. The loser is still in the playoffs, but the Seahawks would be the 5th seed with a loss, and the 49ers could be the fifth or sixth seed depending on the outcome of the other division game between the Rams and the Cardinals. This is the best game of the weekend, and should be a fun one to watch!

Who will take the No. 1 seed and secure home turf? 🔥

Washington Commanders Roster Moves: Two players elevated from practice squad

gettyimages-2253522516.jpg

The Washington Commanders made two moves before tomorrow’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. They have elevated DT Ricky Barber and WR River Cracraft for the season finale. Both players were also elevated for last week’s game on Christmas day against the Dallas Cowboys.

Ricky Barber only played 15 snaps on defense in his NFL debut, but he made a big impression. He had 5 combined tackles and a sack against the Cowboys. Fans were hoping to get another look at the rookie UDFA from UCF, and they could get another look tomorrow. Daron Payne missed last week’s game due to a back injury, but was a full participant in practice all week, and is expected to play against the Eagles. Johnny Newton also took advantage of Payne’s absence last week, recording 9 combined tackles, 3 sacks, and 5 QB hits.

River Cracraft has been with the Commanders on and off since last season, and hasn’t seen much action. He was active last week, but only played one snap on special teams. He returned one punt for 0 yards.

2026 NFL Playoffs: Super Wild Card Weekend schedule

The 2025-26 regular season is over, and the Washington Commanders aren’t going to the playoffs. They finished the season with a 5-12 record and “earned” the No. 7 overall pick in this year’s draft. They beat the Philadelphia Eagles who would have moved up to the #2 seed with a win, but now sit behind the Chicago Bears at #3.

The Seattle Seahawks(NFC) and Denver Broncos(AFC) were the best teams in their conferences and earned a first round bye. The other 12 teams will play 6 games that the NFL spreads over its 3-day Super Wild Card Weekend.

Adam Peters and Dan Quinn talk about the season and the future of the franchise

Screenshot_20260105_174149_X.jpg

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media after the players cleaned out their lockers as they prepare for the offseason. The Commanders’ season was a disappointment, and didn’t meet their standards. They plan out evaluating the roster and coaching staff, but weren’t ready to announcing any changes today. They acknowledged that the team needs to get younger and faster, and also build around Jayden Daniels.

— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) January 5, 2026

Changes needed:

Dan Quinn said they have not yet determined what changes will be made. "Everything needs to be thoroughly examined and discussed and answer what went wrong and what to do to fix it to make sure we never go through this again."

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 5, 2026

— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) January 5, 2026
Adam Peters said he thinks he and Terry McLaurin would agree they would've liked to get his contract done earlier than they did.

"It didn't happen that way. There's reasons for that," he said. "But ultimately, we'd like to get those things done before we did."

— Tom Schad (@Tom_Schad) January 5, 2026

Kliff Kingsbury:

Asked about Kliff Kingsbury, Dan Quinn says that the team is going through evaluations right now. Says everything needs to be better

— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) January 5, 2026

Weak spots on the roster:

Adam Peters: "Health played a big part and wasn't close to the only part. … I feel really good at some spots, but there's certainly some spots where there could be improvement."

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) January 5, 2026

Adding another pass rusher:

Adam Peters: "Certainly another pass rusher would be something we're looking for. Whether that's the draft or free agency, I think we have a lot of options in both."

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) January 5, 2026

Getting younger:

Peters: "We're always trying to get younger, faster. That will be a big emphasis for us this offseason."

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 5, 2026

Long-term deals:

Adam Peters said he has no aversion to long-term deals. But: "In past places I've been, the biggest mistakes made is investing a lot of years into a player you don’t know."

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 5, 2026

Protecting Jayden Daniels:

Adam Peters, on if there's a long-term plan to keep Jayden Daniels healthier: "From my perspective, a GM's perspective, I think that's continuing to put good players around him … and not put it all on his shoulders … getting a good defense on the other side. "

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) January 5, 2026

Laremy Tunsil:

Adam Peters on Laremy Tunsil: "He's an outstanding leader. He's an outstanding mentor. … Incredibly hard-worker. … And on the field I thought he was one of the better LTs if not the best. … We definitely want to get something done with him, and sooner rather than later."

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) January 5, 2026

Trading down in the 1st round:

When talking about the draft picks, Peters mentioned not having a second or fourth (Tunsil trade). "I would do that one all over again… Obviously we have a top-10 pick, which we could look to move and get more picks if the opportunity arises."

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 5, 2026
Peters said the #Commanders would be open to trading the No. 7 pick to amass more draft capital. They have just two picks in the first four rounds.

— Tashan Reed (@tashanreed) January 5, 2026

Dan Quinn makes coaching staff decisions:

Adam Peters says Dan Quinn has control of coaching staff decisions and the front office is supportive. DQ adds it's a collaborative process and he's appreciative of it.

— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) January 5, 2026

Defensive player caller next season:

Dan Quinn demurred when asked if he's going to call defensive plays next season. Still evaluating best step forward. But said he'll be "heavily involved" with the defense one way or another.

— Tom Schad (@Tom_Schad) January 5, 2026

Wide receivers:

Adam Peters on their WR depth: "I think anytime you [lose] your top 2 guys it hurts your depth. A lot of it has to do with opportunity, one, and the cost. … Both Noah's and Terry's injuries were probably a little bit longer than we thought it would be. … I think it's a good…

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) January 5, 2026
Adam Peters says of the WR room – Terry & Noah Brown injuries went longer than expected, explored lots of options, liked what they saw from Burks, but needs to be better for Jayden

Tanking vs the Eagles:

As Commanders pack up, Jayden Daniels considers how 2026 can go better

A dispiriting season for the team and its franchise quarterback may bring significant changes: “You don’t want to have locker room clean-out this early.”

“You don’t want to have locker room clean-out this early,” Daniels said Monday. “You want to be in the dance. It’s most definitely motivation for next year.”

Daniels already has seen both ends of the public perception spectrum in his young career. When he burst into stardom as a rookie sensation, he was voted the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year and crowned the jewel of his draft class. But he took a step back in Year 2, spending most of this season sidelined while fellow second-year quarterbacks Drake Maye, Bo Nix and Caleb Williams guided their teams to the playoffs.

Entering this offseason, he’s confident in his ability to bounce back.

The most immediate question for Daniels is whether he wil be working with a new offensive coordinator. Kliff Kingsbury is under contract for next season, but he’s expected to receive interest from teams with head coaching vacancies. Despite a disappointing season, Daniels remains an ardent supporter of Kingsbury and hopes to have him back.

“I love working with Kliff. Me and him have a special relationship,” Daniels said. “I kind of just wish I was out there more to play for him this past year.”

Jayden Daniels on the microphone one last time before he hits the offseason.

I asked Jayden if he has to change his play style going forward?

He said, "I think you always grow and mature. The best ability for myself is availability…if I'm not out there I'm hurting the team." pic.twitter.com/YvXwqflg8N

The Athletic (paywall)

For the disappointing and disappointed Commanders, ‘hard decisions have to be made’

In their usual end-of-season news conference with reporters, Quinn and general manager Adam Peters acknowledged the obvious — changes will be and need to be made to the roster and coaching staff — while conceding little about their plan for improving the Commanders, including potential changes to the coaching staff.

“Everything needs to be and is being thoroughly examined and discussed,” Quinn said. “And really our work is answering the question of what went wrong and what do we need to do to fix it to make sure we never go through this again.”

It’s plausible the Commanders could return for 2026 with a mostly new coaching staff, outside of Quinn. Joe Whitt Jr. was stripped of defensive play-calling duties, putting his long-term future with the franchise in jeopardy. And Kliff Kingsbury, whose offense was lauded for its creativity and fit for quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2024, could be a candidate for a head-coaching job elsewhere, although the team may opt for a complete change anyway.

[O]ne priority is getting a deal done with left tackle Laremy Tunsil “sooner rather than later,” Peters said.

Adam Peters on trying to extend Laremy Tunsil, who has one year left on his contract but is likely to hold out if he doesn't get a new deal:

"We definitely want to get something done with him, and sooner rather than later."

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) January 5, 2026

Peters acknowledged…the general identity of the roster needs a full reset, too.

“I think you’re always trying to get younger and faster,” he said. “And that will be a big emphasis for us this offseason.”

Me: "Sam, who do you sum up the season? What happened here?"

Sam Cosmi: (insert chuckle) "That's a great question. I think I need a little bit more time to figure that out." pic.twitter.com/NRAxfcZoMh

— Scott Abraham (@Scott7news) January 5, 2026

Quinn took over the play calling in Week 11 and initially left the door open for him to continue in that role in 2026. But when asked on Monday, Quinn softened his response.

“I think what I’ve learned is that we’ll make the best decision for what the team needs,” he said. “What I do know is I’ll be heavily involved, one way or another, and that’s the part that I do enjoy. But I think I’ll keep an open mind as I go through the next parts of the process.”

5 takeaways from Commanders vs. Eagles

Von Miller moves up on the all-time sack list.

Like Wagner, Miller is already considered one of the best to ever play his position, but he added another bullet point to his already extensive Hall of Fame resume on Sunday, when he recorded his ninth sack of the season in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.

The play tied him with Cowboys linebacker Demarcus Ware for ninth most sacks all-time on the official list, putting him in the same company as Terrell Suggs (139), Michael Strahan (141.5), Chris Doleman (150.5) and Julius Peppers (159.5).

Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury Top Candidate for AFC Opening

Kingsbury’s name popped up immediately as a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders head coach position after Pete Carroll was fired after one season in which he went 3-14 and the Raiders secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

Take into account the Raiders might not be the only team after Kingsbury, with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans both reportedly already seeking interviews.

“The expectation is that the Titans, Giants, and other teams with openings will request to interview Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury for their HC jobs, per sources,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on X on Monday, January 5. “One of the league’s top QB developers, Kingsbury has worked with Jayden Daniels and Kyler Murray in their OROY seasons and with Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech.”

Kingsbury does have one very important connection with the Raiders in former teammate and team co-owner Tom Brady, who reports say is acting as the “de facto boss” for the franchise in terms of decision making.

If Kingsbury ends up with the Raiders, it will be his second head coaching job and second time taking over a team with the No. 1 overall pick.

Raiders, Kingsbury Have Weird History

Just Blog Baby’s Levi Dombro laid out why Kingsbury might not get a shot with the Raiders.

” … There are two glaring reasons why Kingsbury wouldn’t be a good match in Las Vegas,” Dombro wrote. “One is that, according to Fowler, Kingsbury is being selective about where he coaches. Given the stability of the Raiders’ head coach post in recent years, Kingsbury may want to steer clear. Second, and perhaps more important, is that Kingsbury and the franchise have already crossed paths before, and it didn’t end well. Last offseason, Las Vegas hired Kingsbury to be its offensive coordinator under Antonio Pierce. It was a done deal. However, in the middle of the night, Kingsbury jumped ship and left for the same position with the Commanders, spurning Mark Davis and the Raiders over what was called a contractual dispute.”

Commanders can hit the Eagles where it hurts with this Joe Whitt replacement

[Jonathan] Gannon’s time in Arizona didn’t go as planned. However, he secured the top job due to his sterling work as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator. If he is interested in getting back to work quickly, the Commanders would be wise to inquire.

The Commanders could use an experienced presence who has served as a coordinator. There is a lot at stake for Quinn in 2026, and betting on unknown quantities may not be smart. There is considerable merit in targeting someone with Gannon’s undoubted credentials.

Gannon had an exceptional defensive résumé before taking the job in Arizona, devising a scheme that spearheaded the Eagles to another Super Bowl. He could take some time out of the game before making his next move, but there would be no shortage of suitors looking to find out more if he wants to get back into the mix immediately.

Austin Ekeler says goodbye to Commanders, fans

The Washington Commanders lost running back Austin Ekeler to a torn Achilles in a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers. A big part of Washington’s offense and a safety valve for quarterback Jayden Daniels was gone.

Ekeler took to Instagram on Monday to thank the Commanders and their fans.

Ekeler was one of several veterans, alongside Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz, who became respected locker-room leaders in 2024, alongside their production on the field. All three will be free agents in March.

Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt is the only running back under contract for Washington next season, so the position could look much different. Chris Rodriguez Jr. is a restricted free agent, while Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols will be unrestricted free agents.

Chris Rodriguez Jr. is now a restricted free agent.

I asked him about his future.

He told me, "it's not up to me right now…first thing for me will be to rest and recover. Whatever happens after that happens…I would love to come back." pic.twitter.com/6LiiP2tBDz

Eagles vs. Commanders: 7 winners, 7 losers, and 3 IDKs

JALEN HURTS

If Jalen Hurts is truly THE problem with the offense, why did it still stink without him playing on Sunday?

I don’t think he has to worry about being benched anytime soon.

LOSERS

NICK SIRIANNI

We all know the Eagles aren’t a head coach-centric organization. I doubt Sirianni and Sirianni alone made the decision to rest most starters instead of playing them. But one would think he had a significant voice in the decision. I have a hard time believing he really wanted them to play given the lack of aggression we’ve seen from him all season long.

It feels fitting to me that the Eagles were burned by the hubris of Sirianni’s overly conservative approach. My friend Jimmy Kempski phrased it well earlier this season when highlighting the Eagles’ alarming lack of ambition in end of half scenarios:

“Sirianni would rather give up on unlikely-but-realistic scoring opportunities, in fear that extremely unlikely worst case scenarios will happen instead.” https://t.co/pLDbbYjtV3

— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) November 25, 2025

Too much focus on what could go wrong and not enough on what could go right.

And what would’ve gone right for the Eagles is that they probably would’ve been the No. 2 seed if they played the starters in Week 18.

KEVIN PATULLO

Different quarterback … and yet a lot of the same issues that have plagued the offense this season. It’s almost like the coaching might be a problem.

TANNER MCKEE

McKee didn’t play well. This was a disappointing performance; I expected more from him since he’s looked pretty good in his other limited opportunities. I was discouraged by his poor pocket presence; I thought he bailed too early and right into pressure a number of times. He missed too many throws. He made a really bad decision to force a throw to a tightly covered Darius Cooper instead of running for a wide open first down on 2nd-and-1 on a drive where the Eagles ended up punting. McKee’s final throw of the game went out of bounds … on fourth down.

4 reasons why the Cowboys got manhandled in the Meadowlands

With the final score of 34-17, the Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 season is now over. The New York Giants, with nothing but pride to play for, soundly beat the Cowboys to send Dallas into the offseason with a whimper. After a comedy of errors in the first half, the Cowboys opted to sit Dak Prescott in the second half, likely to protect him from any unnecessary injuries. With the loss, the Cowboys fell well short of expectations and to a 7-9-1 record.

The Cowboys have battled their demons of poor fundamental football and a lack of cohesion on the defensive end.

Delaying defensive coordinator decision will only cost Cowboys

There is no good that can come from the Cowboys delaying a Matt Eberflus decision

The last few weeks have made Matt Eberflus’ departure from the Cowboys feel inevitable. He has served as the defensive coordinator for one of (literally speaking) the worst defenses in both franchise and NFL history.

The Dallas Cowboys finished with the No. 4 worst defense in the history of DVOA.

The Cincinnati Bengals were on this list for much of the season but improved in December. pic.twitter.com/OLMDO301iX

— Aaron Schatz 🏈 (@ASchatzNFL) January 5, 2026

[W]aiting on and dragging this thing out will only serve to hurt the Cowboys. Unfortunately, it seems like they might be doing that. It was reported after Sunday’s season finale that they could even take “10-to-12 days” to work through this whole thing.

Decision on the future of Matt Eberflus not expected until thorough review over “next 10-to-12 days” is completed, Cowboys said.

“Once you go through the process, you know what you want to do. I don’t think we’ll rush any of these decisions.”

MORE ⬇️https://t.co/qG5AfStqKr

— Nick Harris (@NickHarrisFWST) January 4, 2026

[T]here is heavy competition going on right now.

The longer the Cowboys wait to move on from Eberflus, assuming it is their eventual plan, the longer they are providing time for potential replacement candidates to find homes elsewhere. This is common sense.

Only coaches who have a first-round bye, or aren't in the playoffs, are permitted to interview this week. That list includes Lou Anarumo, Vance Joseph, Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo, who all have slips from Tennessee. https://t.co/X2bphn2n81

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 5, 2026

The Cowboys missed out in this provision last year. Recall that Dallas spent Wild Card week (so this week) last year debating on the future of Mike McCarthy. There were reports about how they were taking their time, going back and forth, and it was ultimately on the Monday of the Wild Card round (the day of the final game) that they announced they were moving on.

By dragging that decision out the Cowboys not only missed out on head coach candidates who were interviewing with teams through that week, but they also cost themselves the opportunity to interview candidates from the top seeds at the time which were the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn both got head coaching jobs, Johnson has the Chicago Bears in the playoffs this year, and the Cowboys didn’t even speak to either of them.

For all we know the Cowboys could wind up keeping Matt Eberflus at his post. That decision would be met with, um, disagreement, but you know what? If they decided that immediately wouldn’t that at least be some sign of progress?

Waiting helps nobody. It hardly helps Matt Eberflus either to have his name tossed around on the internet. Waiting only hurts. Stop waiting. Do something. Anything. Just do it.

The Cowboys so desperately need to commit to something that doing so, even if it was something we disagreed with, and foregoing dragging the process out, would be improvement.

NY Giants star wide receiver won’t promise return for Week 1 of 2026

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, rehabbing from a torn ACL, said Monday he is “not really sure” if he will be ready to play when the 2026 season starts next September.

“If my body doesn’t feel right then I’m not gonna go out there,” Nabers said.

“Target date is when my body feels ready to be out there.”

The star wide receiver, who tore his ACL in Week 4, said he is “right on track” in the rehab process.

Nabers said backup quarterback Jameis Winston has helped him since the injury occurred.

“I kept asking him ‘why it happened to me, why it happened to me?’,” Nabers said. “He was like, ‘why not you? Why not go back to the bottom trying to find your way back to the top?’

Raiders fire Pete Carroll after one season; GM John Spytek remains

The team fired the 74-year-old coach Monday after it went 3-14 this season, which ended with a 14-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Raiders owner Mark Davis said in a statement that general manager John Spytek, who was hired along with Carroll last year, will lead football operations with minority owner Tom Brady, including the search for the team’s next coach.

Now, Las Vegas will search for its sixth head coach since 2021. The last coach to be with the organization for at least two seasons is Jon Gruden (2018-21).

Las Vegas attempted to help Carroll fast-track the rebuilding process by hiring offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, trading for starting quarterback Geno Smith and taking running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Raiders lost by double digits nine times and were held to fewer than 10 points five times. They went 1-5 against AFC West opponents.

Las Vegas ranked at the bottom in every major offensive category, including rushing yards per game (77.5). Smith never lived up to Carroll’s expectations, throwing for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and a league-high 17 interceptions.

Defensively, the philosophies of Carroll and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham didn’t translate to much consistency. Las Vegas was 25th in points allowed (25.4).

Many around the league believe that if the relationship between Maxx Crosby and the Raiders remains strained, Vegas would be open to trading its star.

Mike McDaniel says he’s Dolphins’ coach until told otherwise

The Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel said he will be part of the team’s interview process for its next general manager and will remain the head coach until he’s told otherwise. The Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier parted ways on Oct. 31.

McDaniel spent most of the 2025 season among the favorites to lose their job, after Miami lost seven of its first nine games, but rebounded with a four-game winning streak to come within a game of a .500 record. The Dolphins (7-10) still finished with a losing record for the second consecutive season, which McDaniel called a “failure.”

When asked about his job security, the fourth-year coach said it’s “my understanding I’m the coach of the Miami Dolphins until told otherwise,” and added that he’ll speak with team owner Stephen Ross about how to move forward successfully.

A source told ESPN the team believed in McDaniel throughout the Dolphins’ struggles and suggested their issues were quarterback-related. McDaniel benched starter Tua Tagovailoa after a Week 15 loss in favor of rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers.

The Dolphins are currently projected to be $6.4 million over the salary cap entering next season but own five picks in the first three rounds of the 2026 NFL draft. McDaniel stressed the importance of building through the draft, as Miami did with its 2025 class.

Ravens again fail to live up to expectations. What does it mean for John Harbaugh?

No one in the Ravens’ locker room on Monday disputed the notion that this team underperformed and failed to live up to expectations. When that happens, notable changes are typically inevitable.

As a handful of teams fired their head coaches over the last 24 hours, Monday came and went without Baltimore making any significant decisions. That shouldn’t be surprising. Bisciotti typically allows the emotions that accompany the end of the season to die down before charting his organization’s offseason path. There surely will be conversations between Bisciotti, general manager Eric DeCosta and Harbaugh — if there hasn’t been already — in the coming days.

"NFL owners don't handle unmet expectations well." 👀@danorlovsky7 on if the Ravens should move on from John Harbaugh 🏈 pic.twitter.com/9JCUeT7zjI

— NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) January 5, 2026

Several teams with head-coaching vacancies are monitoring the situation with Harbaugh to see if he ultimately becomes available. Harbaugh would likely become the top candidate on what’s perceived as a thin head-coaching market.

If Bisciotti is determined to keep Harbaugh for his 19th season, Harbaugh will have to decide if major changes are necessary with his coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr, in particular, had a rough night Sunday with his group having no answers for the Steelers with the game on the line. Given how many resources the Ravens have put into their defense, they surely expect more from that unit, which has a tendency to wilt late in games.

Now, the Ravens wait for what comes next. The uncertainty was palpable throughout their locker room Monday.

Reacting to Commanders end of season press conference

Dan Quinn and Adam Peters held their end of season presser, here are the main takeaways

After reports over the weekend emerged suggesting there could be a rift between offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Adam Peters, the pair were asked about Kingsbury’s season. Quinn again deflected the question and refused to be drawn on specific people. “Yeah, we’re going through all of the coaches. Kliff, offensively, defensively, on the [special] teams side. So that’s really what we’re digging into, to find what’s best, how do we do it, you know, where do we find spaces to improve? For Kliff, for Joe [Whitt], for Larry [Izzo], for all of us, that’s our main focus, so we’re never in this space again and that’s what we want to dig in hard on.”

That’s a lot of words to essentially say nothing, but if we’re reading between the lines, there were no real positives or endorsements of Kingsbury by Quinn in that answer. Obviously, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but given the opportunity to praise or back his offensive coordinator, Quinn didn’t say anything positive at all. It could just be an honest answer that they’re in evaluation mode, but I’d be surprised if Quinn doesn’t have a pretty strong view on Kingsbury. Quinn has typically been very quick to praise people that work for him and have their backs, so the fact he didn’t take that opportunity to do so is notable.

Commanders QB Marcus Mariota had high praise for OC Kliff Kingsbury:

“I think so much of Kliff. … When you’re able to play for someone that you truly believe in and trust, I think that’s why I ended up playing my best.

I would love to see him get another shot at (head coach).” pic.twitter.com/hqXnd20V2T

Listened to entire Dan Quinn & Adam Peters presser. Some thoughts…

When I look at the openings right now, Baltimore is hands down the crown jewel. Great organization. Established culture. A feeling you will get stability from the organization and patience from the owner. Great GM. MVP QB (for now at least). The best roster of all the openings.

— James Palmer (@JamesPalmerTV) January 6, 2026
Amid recent leaguewide buzz about Kliff Kingsbury’s future, many believe Baltimore, paired with Lamar Jackson, would be an ideal landing spot for the now former Commanders offensive coordinator.

That will be a name to watch.

Dan Quinn wanting to run the ball more is odd to me primarily because we know in 2026 that you don't run to possess the ball you possess the ball to run.

Dan Quinn and Adam Peters want to run the ball more.

Yet, we were 9th in rushing attempts with Kliff Kingsbury as OC.

However, here's the breakdown:

120 QB runs/scrambles (2nd in the NFL)
345 RB carries (25th in the NFL)

More rushing attempts for RBs protects Jayden Daniels. pic.twitter.com/RefVibahNE

— District Divided (@DistrictDivided) January 6, 2026
Even this year, when they only got seven not great games from Jayden Daniels the Commanders EPA/P splits were:

Designed run: +.01
Designed pass: +.06

In 2024 it was

Designed run: +.06
Designed pass: +.19

Pretty tough to argue they passed too much! https://t.co/JTQaiVBWst

— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) January 6, 2026
One thing to note: As others have said Washington will look outside for KK's replacement (not 100 % they hire that way however). One thing Quinn felt good about when he set up this offensive staff was having a line of succession IF KK left for a HC job. Clearly things changed.

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 6, 2026
When Kliff Kingsbury gets another gig this offseason, he'll be on three payrolls.

The Cardinals are still paying him for one more season. The Commanders will be paying him for this season. And the new team will be paying him for this season.

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) January 6, 2026
Rams OC Mike LaFleur is an intriguing name for the #Commanders OC opening.

He has distinct ties to the new regime, and has the desirable McVay/Shanahan pedigree.

Inside the Offensive Coordinator Search That Could Also Shape Dan Quinn’s Future

Screenshot_20260107_134657_Chrome.jpg

There is a narrow margin for error when a head coach enters year three coming off a 5–12 season. While there are many underlying factors as to how they got here, the fact simply can’t be ignored.

For Dan Quinn, the search for Washington’s next offensive coordinator is not simply about improving the unit or maximizing the skill set of a young quarterback. It is about professional survival.

And now, it’s a paradox Quinn now faces. If he gets the hire wrong, Washington risks another stagnant offensive season in 2026, and Quinn could be on the outside looking in by the time 2027 arrives. But if he gets it right—really right—and lands a coordinator with head-coaching cachet or upward momentum, success may create its own complications.

A playoff return and a revitalized offense would instantly make that coordinator a priority retention piece for general manager Adam Peters and owner Josh Harris. In that scenario, Quinn’s authority and longevity could quietly come under scrutiny, especially if the offense continues to serve as the defining identity of the roster.

With Kliff Kingsbury now gone, Washington is again searching for offensive direction. What makes this cycle different is that the roster is no longer theoretical. Jayden Daniels is entrenched under center. Terry McLaurin remains the offensive centerpiece. And Laremy Tunsil remains the anchor at left tackle. There are also young pieces developing at the skill spots, so the next coordinator will not be inheriting a blank slate. He will be stepping into a pressure cooker.

Here are four names to know as Washington begins their evaluation process.

Nate Scheelhaase, Pass Game Specialist, Los Angeles Rams

If Washington prioritizes innovation, adaptability, and a coach who understands how modern offenses evolve without abandoning structure, Scheelhaase deserves consideration.

For the 35-year old Scheelhaase, his path has never been linear, and that may be his greatest asset. His coaching career began at Illinois in 2015, when the university hired him as Assistant Director of Football Operations after he declined the same role the year prior due to a commitment to youth ministry in Louisville, Kentucky. When Illinois head coach Tim Beckman was fired later that summer and Bill Cubit was promoted to interim head coach, Scheelhaase transitioned onto the field as the running backs coach, a steady climb that would define the next decade of his career.

His time at Iowa State under Matt Campbell, now the head coach at Penn State, solidified his reputation. Hired as running backs coach in 2018, Scheelhaase moved to wide receivers in 2019, then added running game coordinator duties in 2021. By 2023, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, replacing Tom Manning and overseeing a unit that balanced physicality with spacing and multiplicity.

That trajectory caught the attention of Sean McVay, and in February of 2024, Scheelhaase joined the Rams as pass game specialist, a role that places him directly inside one of the league’s most demanding and detail-oriented offensive ecosystems.

For Washington, Scheelhaase represents a coordinator who understands how to build an offense around quarterback strengths rather than forcing a rigid system. His background coaching both running backs and receivers matters for a team still shaping its offensive identity, and with Jayden Daniels, that versatility and willingness to blend concepts could be invaluable.

Spencer Whipple, QB Coach, Jacksonville Jaguars

Washington’s offensive growth in 2026 will be tethered to Daniels’ health, surely, but also continued development as a complete quarterback, not just a dynamic athlete.

That reality places quarterback-centric coaches at the forefront of the conversation, and Whipple fits that profile cleanly.

Whipple has spent recent seasons in Jacksonville working closely with Trevor Lawrence, helping expand the Jaguars’ offensive menu and layering in more intermediate and downfield concepts. While Lawrence and Daniels are different stylistically, both benefit from structured freedom, defined reads paired with the ability to attack defenses both vertically and horizontally.

What makes Whipple intriguing for Washington is his exposure to an offense that demands timing, spacing, and discipline across all three levels of the field. Jacksonville’s skill-position usage has evolved, leaning into matchup creation and route combinations that stress coverage rules rather than simply winning with isolation talent.

For Daniels, whose game thrives on decisiveness and controlled aggression, a coordinator with Whipple’s background could accelerate growth as a processor and passer. The hire would be less about reinvention, and more about refinement, building layers onto what already works.

Davis Webb, Pass Game Coordinator, Denver Broncos

At just 30 years old, Webb represents the younger edge of the coordinator spectrum, but his résumé already carries weight well beyond his age.

Webb has been instrumental in Denver’s work with Bo Nix, helping guide a young quarterback through the transition to an NFL offense while emphasizing footwork, timing, and situational awareness. His presence in the interview cycle — including an upcoming head coaching interview with the Raiders — signals how quickly his reputation is rising within league circles.

For Washington, Webb would be a bet on developmental upside and long-term vision. Moving from the AFC to the NFC, from Nix to Daniels, the appeal lies in Webb’s quarterback-specific focus. Daniels does not need to be protected schematically; he needs to be expanded as a passer. Challenged, if you will, and Webb’s background suggests he understands how to do that without sacrificing efficiency.

This would be a forward-looking hire, one that aligns with Daniels’ timeline and positions Washington as a team investing in continuity rather than short-term fixes.

Dave Ragone, QB Coach, Los Angeles Rams

If Washington wants immediate credibility tied to a proven offensive infrastructure, Ragone is a name that naturally rises to the top.

Another member of the McVay coaching tree, Ragone currently serves as the Rams’ quarterbacks coach and has been deeply involved in game planning and offensive sequencing.

The appeal here is simplicity married to sophistication. Ragone understands how to structure an offense around its best players, and Washington has pieces worth building around. Daniels’ athleticism and arm talent. McLaurin’s dominance on the perimeter. Additionally, a backfield tandem that saw young depth emerge in 2025 with Chris Rodriguez and Bill Croskey-Merritt, similar to the youth-infused presence of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum in Los Angeles.

This would not be a rebuild hire, it would be an optimization hire, aimed at maximizing what already exists while tightening execution.

Brian Daboll, Former Giants HC and Bills OC

Then there is the name that changes the temperature of the room.

Daboll is not simply a coordinator candidate, he is a potential statement hire. He’s a former head coach with playoff experience, a former offensive coordinator who helped mold Josh Allen into one of the games elite, and a coach who interviewed Daniels during the pre-draft process before New York ultimately passed on selecting a quarterback that spring.

If Daboll joins Washington, he does so as a figure with gravitational pull. His presence alongside Dan Quinn would instantly reshape the power dynamic, potentially positioning Daboll as a head-coach-in-waiting whether anyone says it aloud or not.

For Washington, the upside is obvious despite the roller coaster that was his time in New York. Daboll’s track record with quarterbacks, his ability to adapt systems to talent, and his comfort commanding an offense could unlock another level for Daniels and re-align the team’s competitive window.

But this is also where Quinn’s dilemma sharpens. If Daboll gets it right and Washington’s offense reaches levels similar to 2024, the long-term question becomes unavoidable in that who is the individual to steer the future of the franchise?

For Peters and Quinn, the offensive coordinator search is not just about play design or weekly game plans. It is about alignment, authority, and trajectory. It’s a calculated search for the right fit, absolutely, but the reality remains in that Quinn could be hiring someone who could either stabilize his tenure, or quietly shorten it. That’s the nature of the beast in the NFL.

For the burgundy and gold, the priority is clear: find the coach who best positions Washington to win. Whether that path leads to continuity or eventual change may be secondary.

What is certain is that Washington can’t afford another miss. Not with Jayden Daniels in place. Not after 5–12. And not with the clock already ticking.

Washington Commanders Coaching Tracker: Mike McDaniel fired by the Dolphins

gettyimages-2167469264.jpg

Update: Mike McDaniel fired by the Dolphins

Mike McDaniel was officially fired by the Miami Dolphins, and he immediately becomes the favorite to be the Washington Commanders new offensive coordinator due to his ties to current head coach Dan Quinn. McDaniel was famously fired by Quinn who encouraged him to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. McDaniel said he is forever indebted to Quinn with his path to sobriety:

Dan Quinn holds a special place in my heart and my career. I think he was there at ground zero when I became sober and supported me and gave me the opportunity to continue what I love to do. So for that, I’ll be forever indebted to him.

I think it speaks to the type of leader he is. I know he really touches every player he coaches from a true, authentic standpoint. I think the Commanders are very fortunate to have him.

— COMMANDERS FOOTBALL (@HogsHaven) January 8, 2026

The Washington Commanders moved on from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson yesterday. There are more changes expected with two new coordinators set to be hired. Kingsbury was expected to get head coaching consideration, despite the Commanders 5-12 season, but conflicts about offensive scheme reportedly led Washington to let him go shortly after the season ended.

There was more news from Washington yesterday, with Commanders assistant QB coach David Blough reportedly getting an interview with his former team, the Detroit Lions, for their newly-vacated offensive coordinator job. Johnny Morton was fired after one season of not being able to live up to the legend of Ben Johnson.

Blough was seen as a young, upcoming coach who was being groomed to take over OC when Kingsbury left for a bigger opportunity. QB coach Tavita Pritchard left Washington late last year for the head coaching position at his alma mater, Stanford, and Blough took on a lot of his responsibilities, along with Brian Johnson. Blough, along with other coaches that were seen as Kingsbury guys could also exit after yesterday’s news.

Follow along here for update from Washington’s search, and from other searches around the league. Seven head coaches have already been fired, and a few of them could be candidates for Washington’s coordinator openings.

McDaniel will be a name to monitor in the Commanders OC search.

McDaniel and Dan Quinn are really close from their time in Atlanta together. https://t.co/ExwOKOdSdB

McDaniel was informed this morning. This was a shock to Mike; his camp fully expected him to be retained. Ross decided to make the change after assessing situation in aftermath of meeting with McDaniel.

I’m not convinced Mike McDaniel doesn’t get another shot as a HC. Very weak cycle of offensive options.

Does WSH want to go out of the building with a Shanahan tree guy? He would make sense.

Do they want to stay in house to smooth the transition over with a Daniels confidant?…

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) January 8, 2026
In a cycle most view lacking a true A+ slam-dunk candidate, 8 teams have now moved on from their HC, choosing to see what’s behind Door No. 2 instead of sticking with what they had behind Door No. 1.

Dolphins, Ravens, Giants, Titans, Falcons, Raiders, Cardinals, Browns all open. https://t.co/NlV9aD8Dbu

Obviously McDaniel could get a HC look. But if not hard to see DQ not trying to get him. Was with AP in SF too

— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) January 8, 2026
McDaniel will, of course, have several options as an OC if an HC job doesn't crystallize. Natural to point to his connections with GM Adam Peters ( San Francisco years) and HC Dan Quinn ( Atlanta years) in Washington. Similar to Kingsbury, would be getting paid by someone else.

— Peter Schrager (@PSchrags) January 8, 2026

Washington Commanders Coaching Tracker: Drew Terrell interviewed for OC

gettyimages-1234701912.jpg

We’ve got another name for the Washington Commanders coaching search. Ian Rapoport reports that Cardinals passing game coordinator/WRs coach Drew Terrell was interviewed for the position. He said the team has also interviewed several internal candidates. Assistant QB coach David Blough was expected to be interviewed, and has interest from other teams like the Lions. Terrell has history in Washington, and was with the team from 2020-2022 under former head coach Ron Rivera. He left for Arizona before the coaching staff was fired after the 2023 season. He was part of Jonathan Gannon’s staff that was just let go.

Dan Quinn is trying to hire Dallas Cowboys TE coach Lunda Wells again, or at least interview him for the Washington Commanders open offensive coordinator position. When Quinn was hired as head coach, he attempted to bring Wells with him as his OL coach, but the Cowboys blocked it because it wasnt a promotion. Quinn moved on and hired Bobby Johnson, but he was just fired along with DC Joe Whitt Jr, and OC Kliff Kingsbury(mutually agreed to part ways*).

The Commanders have requested permission to speak with Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells regarding their offensive coordinator opening, according to multiple sources. Wells has been big part of game planning in his 6 seasons. He was on staff with Dan Quinn for 3 years.

The Washington Commanders are hiring David Blough as their new OC

gettyimages-1455092313.jpg

The Washington Commanders have quickly moved on from former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, reportedly hiring current assistant QB coach David Blough as his replacement. He was one of three known candidates to interview for the job, and he’s now getting a big promotion in a critical season for the franchise. Blough already had an interview request from the Lions for their recently opened OC job.

Head coach Dan Quinn made several coaching staff changes after a disappointing 5-12 season. Kingsbury and the team “mutually agreed to part ways” after reported conflicts over offensive philosophy and player usage. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson were also fired. Former QB coach Tavita Pritchard left during the season to become Stanford’s head coach, giving Blough more responsibilities at the end of the year.

The Commanders also interviewed Dallas Cowboys TEs coach Lunda Wells and Arizona Cardinals passing game coordinator/WRs coach Drew Terrell for the position. There was a lot before speculation that Quinn would dip back into his past coaching connections to try to bring in former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, but he is receiving interest in other head coaching opportunities with 8 current openings around the league.

Blough was considered a young coach on the rise, and has been getting some of the buzz that fans remember from Sean McVay’s early coaching years in Washington. He’s a former NFL QB who only retired from the game in 2023, last playing for the Detroit Lions. Blough has worked closely with QB Jayden Daniels, and will continue that relationship as his new coordinator. This will be key to running a successful offense, and maximizing Daniels’ potential, while continuing to develop his game to the next level.

Washington Post (paywall)

Commanders go young, promote David Blough to be offensive coordinator

The 30-year-old is just three years removed from his final start as an NFL quarterback.

Washington had been expected to consider recently fired head coaches such as Mike McDaniel or Kevin Stefanski for the vacancy — or perhaps a current offensive coordinator who does not call plays, such as the Los Angeles Rams’ Mike LaFleur. McDaniel and LaFleur both coached on Quinn’s staff during his previous coaching stint in Atlanta.

Instead, the Commanders ultimately interviewed just two external candidates: Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells and Arizona Cardinals passing game coordinator Drew Terrell, who coached Washington’s wide receivers from 2020 to 2022. They also interviewed passing game coordinator Brian Johnson and tight ends coach David Raih, in addition to Blough. Wells and Terrell are both minority coaches, allowing the search to comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview two non-White or female candidates who are not employed by the team for coordinator vacancies.

By promoting Blough, Quinn is leaving room for some schematic continuity, which would be sensible after the team’s wildly successful season with Kingsbury’s offensive scheme in 2024. But given Blough’s varied experiences as a player, there are sure to be new wrinkles and changes, too. It will be Blough’s first time calling offensive plays.

Quinn is also looking to hire a new defensive coordinator to replace Joe Whitt Jr., who was fired Tuesday. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the Commanders interviewed two candidates for the position Friday: Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and Kansas City Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen.

Pride of Detroit

Lions OC candidate David Blough off the board after taking Commanders job

It’s been a meteoric rise for Blough, who only retired from his NFL playing days after the 2023 season. Since then, he has been the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Commanders for the past two seasons. He also served as the interim quarterbacks coach for the final month of this past season after Tavita Pritchard left the position to become Stanford’s head coach. While rare, a quick rise up the ranks isn’t unheard of in the NFL. The most recent example is Kellen Moore, who retired from playing in 2017, became the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018, and was their offensive coordinator in 2019. Five years later, he was hired to become the Saints’ head coach.

David Blough’s trajectory —

November: Assistant QBs Coach
December: QBs Coach
January: Offensive Coordinator

Incredibly fast rise.

Pride of Detroit

4 reasons Blough should be a legitimate candidate for Lions offensive coordinator

He’s in higher demand than you may think

Blough may only be two years into his coaching career, but the man has already drawn the interest of several teams. Last year alone, the Commanders had to block interview requests from the Jets (QB coach), Bears (pass game coordinator), and Jaguars (QB coach). Obviously, Aaron Glenn and Johnson chasing him is no surprise considering their shared time in Detroit, but Liam Coen was also interested, and he has no history with Blough. Word is getting around.

He’s already designed some very successful plays

While play-design is only a small part of the job of offensive coordinator, Blough has already been credited with pitching in for some critical plays at critical times. Here’s Commanders QB Jayden Daniels talking about this game-winning touchdown play in Week 16 against the Eagles (via Albert Breer):

“It set up perfectly,” Daniels says of Blough’s concept. “We did that same play in practice, same route, right behind the linebacker, in two-high coverage. That was my first read presnap from what I’ve seen—I’m going to go right here and trust in him to make a play.”

Remember the reverse flea-flicker the Lions pulled off against the Cowboys? That play was called “Boilermaker.” Why? Because Blough, a Purdue alumnus, brought it with him from college.

He’s already being tabbed as a future head coach candidate

While the Lions certainly wouldn’t want to have another successful offensive coordinator poached from them in the future, it speaks to Blough’s legitimacy that some believe he’s destined to be a head coach someday soon. David Aldridge, a Commanders columnist for The Athletic, had this to say about Blough:

“But it feels more likely that Quinn will go outside the building, though he’d love to keep assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough, who’s on the fast track to becoming a head coach sometime very soon.”

Blough also made The Athletic’s 2025 list of the NFL’s “50 under 40”— a list of rising young talents in the league at coaching and executive positions. Here’s what authors Jourdan Rodrigue and Mike Jones said about Blough:

“Kingsbury described Blough as ‘one of the brightest quarterbacks I’ve ever been around,”‘and praises his rapport with his players, his insight and communication skills. Blough received interest from Aaron Glenn and the Jets about their quarterbacks coach opening, but the Commanders blocked Blough from interviewing, viewing him as a valuable piece to their quarterback room and with potential to rise through the ranks of their organization.

Source: Commanders promote David Blough to offensive coordinator

Blough took over the quarterback coach duties after Tavita Pritchard, who held that role, was hired as Stanford‘s head coach Nov. 28.

A former quarterback, Blough played five seasons in the NFL with four different organizations. He appeared in nine games, making seven starts.

Kingsbury often raved about Blough’s football acumen. He pointed to his experience in multiple systems, including under Ben Johnson in Detroit and Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota.

“He’s very bright, there’s no doubt,” Kingsbury said last month. “He’s been around some great offensive minds … so his biggest strengths are he sees it from the lens of the player and yet he can kind of separate and still be the coach.”

Blough developed a strong relationship with Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels — the two would play a football version of H-O-R-S-E before practice each Friday.

But, Kingsbury said, Blough was demanding of the players. Kingsbury said that likely is because Blough “maximized who he was as a player.”

Commanders promoting David Blough to offensive coordinator

Blough’s playing career exposed him to multiple systems and play callers that he said shaped his offensive philosophy. He was with Darrell Bevell (in 2019 and 2020) and Anthony Lynn (2021), who is now the Commanders’ run game coordinator and running backs coach, during his first stint in Detroit. In 2022, Blough spent time with Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota, where he was first exposed to the Sean McVay-style condensed splits, then learned Kingsbury’s up-tempo offense in Arizona later that year. He ended his playing days as a practice-squad quarterback with the Lions, with then-offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, now the Bears’ head coach.

“One thing that people would say about me is I’m a journeyman,” Blough said in 2024. “What they don’t realize is the blessing of getting to play for so many different minds. So, now being here and trying to put as much of that together to help formulate the best thing we can, I think, has been really beneficial to me.”

Jeremy McNichols : Career year in 2025

McNichols rushed 44 times for 221 yards and a touchdown while catching 25 of 31 targets for 196 yards across 17 regular-season games in 2025. With Austin Ekeler (Achilles) sustaining a season-ending injury early into the Commanders’ 2025 campaign, McNichols was thrust into the role of the team’s primary pass-catching running back. The Boise State product performed well, recording a career-high 417 total yards while averaging 6.0 yards per touch. Set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, McNichols could draw interest from teams seeking a third-down back ahead of the 2026 season.

Inside Washington Commanders’ high-stakes reset in 2026

THE HARD DECISIONS began Tuesday with the change in coordinators.

Quinn and Kingsbury didn’t share the same offensive vision for the future, according to multiple team and league sources. According to multiple team sources, Quinn wanted a different offensive identity and spoke often with his staff of wanting a better run-pass balance.

If any philosophical issues existed last season, they were masked by winning. One team source said this season unmasked the divide. Washington ran the ball more down the stretch and finished the season ranked ninth in number of rushes, but it was 25th in carries by its backs. The Commanders were fifth and 19th, respectively, last season.

The speed with which Quinn moved on Kingsbury was noteworthy to some. The feeling among multiple team and league sources is that if Quinn doesn’t succeed in Washington, he will likely not get a third chance as a head coach. So, waiting until it’s too late to make a move was not an option. Quinn has said as much himself.

People who know the situation, and know Quinn well, said the risk would be in keeping the staff intact when Quinn and Kingsbury did not share the same vision. One team source said the goal is for the staff to be completely aligned — something several others said was not the case this season.

“You need to do what’s best for your organization. If you feel you need to change and then don’t? A year from now everyone’s fired,” said a source close to the situation.

Washington has six picks in this April’s draft, including the seventh overall selection. The Commanders also have approximately $90 million in cap space but only 36 players signed for next season. They can create $18.5 million in more space by releasing corner Marshon Lattimore, who tore an ACL in November.

They’ve built a strong offensive line, with only one current starter — left guard Chris Paul — a potential free agent. They have Daniels. They have McLaurin. They could use other contributors on offense, but they have a foundation. On defense, they have questions. One offensive assistant, whose team faced Washington in the second half of the season, said the only two players who truly caused concern were tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw.

The Commanders are encouraged by second-year linebacker Jordan Magee’s growth and like how rookie corner Trey Amos played before breaking his leg in Week 10. But they have only two defensive linemen under 25 years old: Jer’Zhan Newton, a second-round pick in 2024; and Drake Jackson, a second-round pick in 2022 by San Francisco who saw limited time in 2025.

“There’s a lot of spots we can look at,” Peters said. “Certainly another pass rusher would be something we’d definitely be looking for. Whether that’s the draft or free agency, I think we have a lot of good options in both of those areas.”

Riggo’s Rag

Dan Quinn is betting his Commanders’ future on David Blough

It’s also a sign that Quinn is drawing on past experiences to make his decisions. He’ll no doubt remember Matt LaFleur and Mike McDaniel taking their chances elsewhere when he was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He clearly didn’t want the same thing to happen again with Blough, who has worked with respected offensive minds such as Ben Johnson and Kevin O’Connell in recent years.

Fans were expecting something bigger. McDaniel became their primary target after he left the Miami Dolphins, but it seems like he could be another head-coaching job quickly. Quinn didn’t want to drag out the process, and there is obvious conviction in the building that Blough can eventually become an upgrade.

He’s got no play-calling experience. Blough’s been around the game for a long time, but there is just no telling for sure how he’ll handle the pressure cooker. And with Quinn fighting to avoid speculation about his own future beyond 2026, it is a massive risk.

But sometimes, with massive risk comes massive reward.

His appointment also keeps some semblance of continuity around quarterback Jayden Daniels. Kingsbury and Pritchard are not around. Blough has worked with the LSU product for two seasons, so there is an already established relationship. There is a lot to be said for familiarity, but the play-caller will be under pressure to devise a scheme that maximizes his skill set while minimizing the risk of injury.

The Commanders didn’t want to lose an up-and-coming coach. Quinn knows what that feels like, and he was eager to see history not repeat itself. The stars aligned perfectly for Blough, but whether he’s up to the task remains to be seen.

6 takeaways from Commanders hiring offensive coordinator David Blough

Mike McDaniel was perfect fit but……

Again, Washington could not afford to wait on McDaniel. While McDaniel holds Quinn in high regard, he could be interviewing for multiple head coaching vacancies. He will interview with the Titans next week, and the Browns reportedly want to speak to him, too. He could also be a candidate with the Ravens and the Raiders.

With several other candidates on playoff teams, this could’ve dragged on for weeks. Quinn wisely chose not to wait.

Offensive style

There are some who are asking: “Why promote Kingsbury’s assistant to run his offense and not just keep Kingsbury?”

That’s not going to be the case here. Blough played for Ben Johnson, Kevin O’Connell and Kingsbury. Those are three of the NFL’s top offensive play-callers. Johnson and Kingsbury have both praised Blough for suggesting plays to attack specific coverages while he was a player. The idea here is that Blough can keep some of the components of Kingsbury’s fast-paced, no-huddle offense, blending with Johnson’s and O’Connell’s ability to have a power running game, use play action and have Daniels play under center more. Daniels under center could be lethal, especially with a dynamic running back behind him.

While it will be several months before we see Washington’s new-look offense, that’s the goal. Also, Johnson and O’Connell employ a zone blocking scheme, which should benefit the Commanders’ athletic offensive line. It will be interesting to see who Blough brings aboard as his offensive line coach.

NY Giants 2025 free agent report card: Joe Schoen didn’t get what he paid for

The 2025 offseason brought yet another spending spree, as Joe Schoen tried to patch a weak secondary for then–defensive coordinator Shane Bowen — an effort that ultimately failed in year one.

Schoen also added veteran quarterbacks and front-seven pieces for the defense, and he took a jab at swing tackle. Some of these contracts worked out better in year one than others. Schoen also resigned WR Darius Slayton to a three-year, $36 million contract, and Slayton followed it up with his worst season as a Giant; the veteran receiver caught 37 of 60 passes for 538 yards with a touchdown and six drops, most in critical situations.

QB Russell Wilson

One year, $10.5-million, fully guaranteed

There is something unquantifiable about Wilson’s leadership with the young players on the team, but the end result of Wilson’s tenure as a Giant was a stain on both his and the Giants’ resumes. Wilson started three games and finished with 69 completions (58%) for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions; 450 of those yards came against a terrible Matt Eberflus coached Dallas defense. Wilson also completed three passes against Chicago and one against the Chargers.

Wilson was later benched a second time in favor of Jameis Winston when Jaxson Dart was in the concussion protocol, and Winston moved the offense and provided an explosive element to the team. The offense was stagnant and unwatchable under Wilson, who operated the first-team offense all throughout training camp, effectively taking those snaps from Jaxson Dart and Winston. Luckily, it was a one-year deal; that, plus the Dallas game, prevented this from earning an F.

Grade: D-

OT James Hudson III

Two years, $12-million, $6-million guaranteed ($6-million AAV)

Hudson confused football with boxing throughout training camp. The tackle was constantly fighting the defense and getting into skirmishes. If he wasn’t fighting, he was committing false start penalties. This all culminated in Week 2 against Dallas, when Hudson committed four penalties on the first drive of the game and was benched for the day in favor of third-round rookie Marcus Mbow. The fact that Hudson III received one million dollars less than Jermaine Eleumunor one off-season later should be studied.

NFL playoff picks: Score predictions and matchup analysis for every Wild Card Round game

temp-niners-eagles.jpg

Why Tom picked the Eagles: Gennaro nailed it; this one is tough. In the end, I had to make a decision between what I want and what I think is right, which is really the dilemma at the heart of this cursed exercise every week. I wanted to pick the 49ers for a number of reasons, including Brock Purdy’s renewed swagger, Kyle Shanahan’s coaching acumen and, ultimately, because I just like them more. As far as defending champs go, the Eagles have been, let’s say, unconvincing. They’ve notched some recent solid wins against competitive teams, like low-scoring squeakers over the Bills (13-12 in Week 17), Lions (16-9 in Week 11) and Packers (10-7 in Week 10), and they’ve handled themselves against also-rans like the Commanders and Raiders, but there is exactly one victory over a fellow playoff contender in which they broke the 20-point mark: that wild 33-26 win over the Rams back in Week 3, which was, don’t forget, padded out by a freak return TD from a 336-pound nose tackle. Over the last nine games of the regular season, Philly ranked 22nd in the NFL in EPA per play on offense — that’s Panthers/Cardinals territory, folks. And much worse than the 49ers’ extremely appealing placement of third in the span, with Purdy returning from injury in Week 11. I don’t have much faith in the Eagles’ ability to move the ball, especially compared to the significantly livelier operation coming to town.

So why don’t I permit myself to enjoy life and ride with San Francisco? Well, it’s that pesky other side of the EPA-per-play equation — the defensive side. In that arena, Philadelphia has been dominant, finishing sixth in the NFL on the season, well above where the Niners sit, in 25th — that’s Giants/Cardinals territory, folks. The last time San Francisco faced an elite defensive squad with a ho-hum offense, one whole week ago, things played out just how the magical numbers whispered they would, in a narrow Seahawks victory. And that was in Santa Clara. This Sunday, on the East Coast, with the Niners’ injury report including crucial names like Trent Williams and Ricky Pearsall while the Eagles get healthier, I’ve got to obey the math spirits again.

Home-field advantage isn’t what it seems in the first round of the NFL playoffs

In three of the six opening-round matchups, the road team had more wins than the home team, and collectively, the road teams had one more win during the regular season.

In four of the matchups, the road team is favored in most betting markets.

So, these shape up as competitive games, and no one should be particularly surprised if a few lower seeds advance.

In a season that had plenty of very good teams but no dominant ones, the playoffs appear to be more equal opportunity than usual.

Best case scenario is he finds a way to blend the up-tempo, no-huddle stuff Kliff did, with the run game/play-action sequencing from Ben Johnson. But that’s a HUGE task for someone so young and inexperienced. Going to be bumps in the road

Washington Commanders Coaching Tracker: Former Titans DC interviewed

gettyimages-2248940960.jpg

Dennard Wilson interviewed for DC

Dennard Wilson is a veteran NFL coach who was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans the last two seasons. He is the latest name added to the Washington Commanders interview list for their open defensive coordinator position.

Wilson, 43, is a Hyatteville, MD native who went to DeMatha High School and played at Maryland. His only season in the NFL was with the Washington Redskins in 2004, playing safety on the practice squad. Wilson entered coaching after an injury ended his first season, going back to DeMatha as their passing game coordinator & DBs coach. He spent two years as a graduate assistant at Maryland before getting his first opportunity to coach in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams as a defensive quality control coach. Wilson spent time with the Jets, Eagles, and Ravens, before getting his first coordinator job with the Titans in 2024.

Joe Cullen interviewed for DC job

Mike Garafolo reports that Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen has interviewed with Washington as the replacement for fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt. This is the first time Cullen’s name has been mentioned nationally this cycle. Back in 2024, prior to Super Bowl LVIII, Kansas City quietly inked him to a contract extension.

Cullen, 58, entered the NFL as a defensive assistant in 2006 with the Lions. He returned to the college ranks in 2009 before the Jaguars hired him as their defensive line coach a year later. He also was the defensive line coach for the Browns (2013), Bucs (2014-15), Ravens (2016-20) and joined the Chiefs in that role in 2022. In 2021, Cullen was the defensive coordinator of the Jaguars.

It would seem that his most obvious link to the Commanders decision-makers may have come from his 3-year stint (’06-‘08) as the Lions defensive line coach when Asst GM Lance Newmark was in Detroit, but relationships in the NFL often run deep.

The #Commanders have interviewed #Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen for their vacant defensive coordinator job, source said. He is a long-time D-line guru and was previously the #Jaguars DC.

Drew Terrell

Lunda Wells interviewing for OC job

Original story

The #Lions have started off their OC search with an intriguing name: David Blough, a former Detroit QB.

Former NYG HC Brian Daboll
Former CLE OC Tommy Rees
Current JAX OC Grant Udinski

Just got off the phone with one coaching agent who said the Commanders may get a better coach at OC than one of these teams with a vacancy get at head coach

Harbaugh, as said when he was let go, is #Giants No. 1 and they’re going all-in to get him, I’m told.

Would be a huge hire that can reset direction of franchise. https://t.co/Dcmlem2T8o
