A dispiriting season for the team and its franchise quarterback may bring significant changes: “You don’t want to have locker room clean-out this early.”
“You don’t want to have locker room clean-out this early,” Daniels said Monday. “You want to be in the dance. It’s most definitely motivation for next year.”
Daniels already has seen both ends of the public perception spectrum in his young career. When he
burst into stardom as a rookie sensation, he was voted
the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year and crowned the jewel of his draft class. But he took a step back in Year 2, spending most of this season sidelined while fellow second-year quarterbacks Drake Maye, Bo Nix and Caleb Williams guided their teams to the playoffs.
Entering this offseason, he’s confident in his ability to bounce back.
The most immediate question for Daniels is whether he wil be working with a new offensive coordinator. Kliff Kingsbury is under contract for next season, but he’s expected to receive interest from teams with head coaching vacancies. Despite a disappointing season, Daniels remains an ardent supporter of Kingsbury and hopes to have him back.
“I love working with Kliff. Me and him have a special relationship,” Daniels said. “I kind of just wish I was out there more to play for him this past year.”
Jayden Daniels on the microphone one last time before he hits the offseason.
I asked Jayden if he has to change his play style going forward?
He said, "I think you always grow and mature. The best ability for myself is availability…if I'm not out there I'm hurting the team."

In their usual end-of-season news conference with reporters, Quinn and general manager Adam Peters acknowledged the obvious — changes will be and need to be made to the roster and coaching staff — while conceding little about their plan for improving the Commanders, including potential changes to the coaching staff.
“Everything needs to be and is being thoroughly examined and discussed,” Quinn said. “And really our work is answering the question of what went wrong and what do we need to do to fix it to make sure we never go through this again.”
It’s plausible the Commanders could return for 2026 with a mostly new coaching staff, outside of Quinn.
Joe Whitt Jr. was stripped of defensive play-calling duties, putting his long-term future with the franchise in jeopardy. And Kliff Kingsbury, whose offense was lauded for its creativity and fit for quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2024, could be a candidate for a head-coaching job elsewhere, although the team may opt for a complete change anyway.
[O]ne priority is getting a deal done with left tackle Laremy Tunsil “sooner rather than later,” Peters said.
Adam Peters on trying to extend Laremy Tunsil, who has one year left on his contract but is likely to hold out if he doesn't get a new deal:

Peters acknowledged…the general identity of the roster needs a full reset, too.
“I think you’re always trying to get younger and faster,” he said. “And that will be a big emphasis for us this offseason.”

Quinn took over the play calling in Week 11 and initially left the door open for him to continue in that role in 2026. But when asked on Monday, Quinn softened his response.
“I think what I’ve learned is that we’ll make the best decision for what the team needs,” he said. “What I do know is I’ll be heavily involved, one way or another, and that’s the part that I do enjoy. But I think I’ll keep an open mind as I go through the next parts of the process.”

Von Miller moves up on the all-time sack list.
Like Wagner, Miller is already considered one of the best to ever play his position, but he added another bullet point to his already extensive Hall of Fame resume on Sunday, when he recorded his ninth sack of the season in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.
The play tied him with Cowboys linebacker Demarcus Ware for ninth most sacks all-time on the official list, putting him in the same company as Terrell Suggs (139), Michael Strahan (141.5), Chris Doleman (150.5) and Julius Peppers (159.5).

Kingsbury’s name popped up immediately as a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders head coach position after Pete Carroll was fired after one season in which he went 3-14 and the Raiders secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
Take into account the Raiders might not be the only team after Kingsbury, with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans both reportedly already seeking interviews.
“The expectation is that the Titans, Giants, and other teams with openings will request to interview Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury for their HC jobs, per sources,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on X on Monday, January 5. “One of the league’s top QB developers, Kingsbury has worked with Jayden Daniels and Kyler Murray in their OROY seasons and with Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech.”
Kingsbury does have one very important connection with the Raiders in former teammate and team co-owner Tom Brady, who reports say is acting as the “de facto boss” for the franchise in terms of decision making.
If Kingsbury ends up with the Raiders, it will be his second head coaching job and second time taking over a team with the No. 1 overall pick.
Raiders, Kingsbury Have Weird History
Just Blog Baby’s Levi Dombro laid out why Kingsbury might not get a shot with the Raiders.
” … There are two glaring reasons why Kingsbury wouldn’t be a good match in Las Vegas,” Dombro wrote. “One is that, according to Fowler, Kingsbury is being selective about where he coaches. Given the stability of the Raiders’ head coach post in recent years, Kingsbury may want to steer clear. Second, and perhaps more important, is that Kingsbury and the franchise have already crossed paths before, and it didn’t end well. Last offseason, Las Vegas hired Kingsbury to be its offensive coordinator under Antonio Pierce. It was a done deal. However, in the middle of the night, Kingsbury jumped ship and left for the same position with the Commanders, spurning Mark Davis and the Raiders over what was called a contractual dispute.”
Riggo’s Rag
[Jonathan] Gannon’s time in Arizona didn’t go as planned. However, he secured the top job due to his sterling work as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator. If he is interested in getting back to work quickly, the Commanders would be wise to inquire.
The Commanders could use an experienced presence who has served as a coordinator. There is a lot at stake for Quinn in 2026, and betting on unknown quantities may not be smart. There is considerable merit in targeting someone with Gannon’s undoubted credentials.
Gannon had an exceptional defensive résumé before taking the job in Arizona, devising a scheme that spearheaded the Eagles to another Super Bowl. He could take some time out of the game before making his next move, but there would be no shortage of suitors looking to find out more if he wants to get back into the mix immediately.
Commanders Wire
The Washington Commanders lost running back Austin Ekeler to a
torn Achilles in a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers. A big part of Washington’s offense and a safety valve for quarterback Jayden Daniels was gone.
Ekeler took to Instagram on Monday to thank the Commanders and their fans.
Ekeler was one of several veterans, alongside Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz, who became respected locker-room leaders in 2024, alongside their production on the field. All three will be free agents in March.
Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt is the only running back under contract for Washington next season, so the position could look much different. Chris Rodriguez Jr. is a restricted free agent, while Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols will be unrestricted free agents.
Chris Rodriguez Jr. is now a restricted free agent.
I asked him about his future.
He told me, "it's not up to me right now…first thing for me will be to rest and recover. Whatever happens after that happens…I would love to come back."

JALEN HURTS
If Jalen Hurts is truly
THE problem with the offense, why did it still stink without him playing on Sunday?
I don’t think he has to worry about being benched anytime soon.
LOSERS
NICK SIRIANNI
We all know the Eagles aren’t a head coach-centric organization. I doubt Sirianni and Sirianni alone made the decision to rest most starters instead of playing them. But one would think he had a significant voice in the decision. I have a hard time believing he really wanted them to play given the lack of aggression we’ve seen from him all season long.
It feels fitting to me that the Eagles were burned by the hubris of Sirianni’s overly conservative approach. My friend Jimmy Kempski phrased it well earlier this season when highlighting the Eagles’ alarming lack of ambition in end of half scenarios:
“Sirianni would rather give up on unlikely-but-realistic scoring opportunities, in fear that extremely unlikely worst case scenarios will happen instead.”

Too much focus on what could go wrong and not enough on what could go right.
And what would’ve gone right for the Eagles is that they probably would’ve been the No. 2 seed if they played the starters in Week 18.
KEVIN PATULLO
Different quarterback … and yet a lot of the same issues that have plagued the offense this season. It’s almost like the coaching might be a problem.
TANNER MCKEE
McKee didn’t play well. This was a disappointing performance; I expected more from him since he’s looked pretty good in his other limited opportunities. I was discouraged by his poor pocket presence; I thought he bailed too early and right into pressure a number of times. He missed too many throws. He made a really bad decision to force a throw to a tightly covered Darius Cooper instead of running for a wide open first down on 2nd-and-1 on a drive where the Eagles ended up punting. McKee’s final throw of the game went out of bounds … on fourth down.

With the final score of 34-17, the Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 season is now over. The New York Giants, with nothing but pride to play for, soundly beat the Cowboys to send Dallas into the offseason with a whimper. After a comedy of errors in the first half, the Cowboys opted to sit Dak Prescott in the second half, likely to protect him from any unnecessary injuries. With the loss, the Cowboys fell well short of expectations and to a 7-9-1 record.
The Cowboys have battled their demons of poor fundamental football and a lack of cohesion on the defensive end.

There is no good that can come from the Cowboys delaying a Matt Eberflus decision
The last few weeks have made Matt Eberflus’ departure from the Cowboys feel inevitable. He has served as the defensive coordinator for one of (literally speaking) the worst defenses in both franchise and NFL history.
The Dallas Cowboys finished with the No. 4 worst defense in the history of DVOA.

[W]aiting on and dragging this thing out will only serve to hurt the Cowboys. Unfortunately, it seems like they might be doing that. It was reported after Sunday’s season finale that they could even take “10-to-12 days” to work through this whole thing.
Decision on the future of Matt Eberflus not expected until thorough review over “next 10-to-12 days” is completed, Cowboys said.
“Once you go through the process, you know what you want to do. I don’t think we’ll rush any of these decisions.”

[T]here is heavy competition going on right now.
The longer the Cowboys wait to move on from Eberflus, assuming it is their eventual plan, the longer they are providing time for potential replacement candidates to find homes elsewhere. This is common sense.
Only coaches who have a first-round bye, or aren't in the playoffs, are permitted to interview this week. That list includes Lou Anarumo, Vance Joseph, Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo, who all have slips from Tennessee.

The Cowboys missed out in this provision last year. Recall that Dallas spent Wild Card week (so this week) last year debating on the future of Mike McCarthy. There were reports about how they were taking their time, going back and forth, and it was ultimately on the Monday of the Wild Card round (the day of the final game) that they announced they were moving on.
By dragging that decision out the Cowboys not only missed out on head coach candidates who were interviewing with teams through that week, but they also cost themselves the opportunity to interview candidates from the top seeds at the time which were the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn both got head coaching jobs, Johnson has the Chicago Bears in the playoffs this year, and the Cowboys didn’t even speak to either of them.
For all we know the Cowboys could wind up keeping Matt Eberflus at his post. That decision would be met with, um, disagreement, but you know what? If they decided that immediately wouldn’t that at least be some sign of progress?
Waiting helps nobody. It hardly helps Matt Eberflus either to have his name tossed around on the internet. Waiting only hurts. Stop waiting. Do something. Anything. Just do it.
The Cowboys so desperately need to commit to
something that doing so, even if it was something we disagreed with, and foregoing dragging the process out, would be improvement.

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, rehabbing from a torn ACL, said Monday he is “not really sure” if he will be ready to play when the 2026 season starts next September.
“If my body doesn’t feel right then I’m not gonna go out there,” Nabers said.
“Target date is when my body feels ready to be out there.”
The star wide receiver, who tore his ACL in Week 4, said he is “right on track” in the rehab process.
Nabers said backup quarterback Jameis Winston has helped him since the injury occurred.
“I kept asking him ‘why it happened to me, why it happened to me?’,” Nabers said. “He was like, ‘why not you? Why not go back to the bottom trying to find your way back to the top?’

The team fired the 74-year-old coach Monday after it went 3-14 this season, which ended with a 14-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Raiders owner Mark Davis said in a statement that general manager John Spytek, who was hired along with Carroll last year, will lead football operations with minority owner Tom Brady, including the search for the team’s next coach.
Now, Las Vegas will search for its sixth head coach since 2021. The last coach to be with the organization for at least two seasons is Jon Gruden (2018-21).
Las Vegas attempted to help Carroll fast-track the rebuilding process by hiring offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, trading for starting quarterback Geno Smith and taking running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
The Raiders lost by double digits nine times and were held to fewer than 10 points five times. They went 1-5 against AFC West opponents.
Las Vegas ranked at the bottom in every major offensive category, including rushing yards per game (77.5). Smith never lived up to Carroll’s expectations, throwing for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and a league-high 17 interceptions.
Defensively, the philosophies of Carroll and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham didn’t translate to much consistency. Las Vegas was 25th in points allowed (25.4).
Many around the league believe that if the relationship between Maxx Crosby and the Raiders remains strained, Vegas would be open to trading its star.

The Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel said he will be part of the team’s interview process for its next general manager and will remain the head coach until he’s told otherwise. The Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier parted ways on Oct. 31.
McDaniel spent most of the 2025 season among the favorites to lose their job, after Miami lost seven of its first nine games, but rebounded with a four-game winning streak to come within a game of a .500 record. The Dolphins (7-10) still finished with a losing record for the second consecutive season, which McDaniel called a “failure.”
When asked about his job security, the fourth-year coach said it’s “my understanding I’m the coach of the Miami Dolphins until told otherwise,” and added that he’ll speak with team owner Stephen Ross about how to move forward successfully.
A source told ESPN the team believed in McDaniel throughout the Dolphins’ struggles and suggested their issues were quarterback-related. McDaniel benched starter Tua Tagovailoa after a Week 15 loss in favor of rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers.
The Dolphins are currently projected to be $6.4 million over the salary cap entering next season but own five picks in the first three rounds of the 2026 NFL draft. McDaniel stressed the importance of building through the draft, as Miami did with its 2025 class.

No one in the Ravens’ locker room on Monday disputed the notion that this team underperformed and failed to live up to expectations. When that happens, notable changes are typically inevitable.
As a handful of teams fired their head coaches over the last 24 hours, Monday came and went without Baltimore making any significant decisions. That shouldn’t be surprising. Bisciotti typically allows the emotions that accompany the end of the season to die down before charting his organization’s offseason path. There surely will be conversations between Bisciotti, general manager Eric DeCosta and Harbaugh — if there hasn’t been already — in the coming days.

Several teams with head-coaching vacancies are monitoring the situation with Harbaugh to see if he ultimately becomes available. Harbaugh would likely become the top candidate on what’s perceived as a thin head-coaching market.
If Bisciotti is determined to keep Harbaugh for his 19th season, Harbaugh will have to decide if major changes are necessary with his coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr, in particular, had a rough night Sunday with his group having no answers for the Steelers with the game on the line. Given how many resources the Ravens have put into their defense, they surely expect more from that unit, which has a tendency to wilt late in games.
Now, the Ravens wait for what comes next. The uncertainty was palpable throughout their locker room Monday.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles has not yet met with the Glazer family about his future but said “I’ve earned the chance. I’ve won three straight division titles so that says at lot as far as I’m concerned.”

Dan Quinn and Adam Peters held their end of season presser, here are the main takeaways
After reports over the weekend emerged suggesting there could be a rift between offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Adam Peters, the pair were asked about Kingsbury’s season. Quinn again deflected the question and refused to be drawn on specific people. “Yeah, we’re going through all of the coaches. Kliff, offensively, defensively, on the [special] teams side. So that’s really what we’re digging into, to find what’s best, how do we do it, you know, where do we find spaces to improve? For Kliff, for Joe [Whitt], for Larry [Izzo], for all of us, that’s our main focus, so we’re never in this space again and that’s what we want to dig in hard on.”
That’s a lot of words to essentially say nothing, but if we’re reading between the lines, there were no real positives or endorsements of Kingsbury by Quinn in that answer. Obviously, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but given the opportunity to praise or back his offensive coordinator, Quinn didn’t say anything positive at all. It could just be an honest answer that they’re in evaluation mode, but I’d be surprised if Quinn doesn’t have a pretty strong view on Kingsbury. Quinn has typically been very quick to praise people that work for him and have their backs, so the fact he didn’t take that opportunity to do so is notable.
Commanders QB Marcus Mariota had high praise for OC Kliff Kingsbury:
“I think so much of Kliff. … When you’re able to play for someone that you truly believe in and trust, I think that’s why I ended up playing my best.
I would love to see him get another shot at (head coach).”
