According to Next Gen Stats LT Laremy Tunsil has allowed the 6th-lowest pressure rate (min. 150 pass blocking snaps) and the 5th-longest time to pressure (3.22 seconds) among left tackles this season (min. 20 pressures allowed).

— John Keim (@john_keim) December 11, 2025
Tunsil has allowed 3 or fewer pressures in 9 of his 12 games, tied for 3rd-most among all left tackles (min. 20 pass blocking snaps in each game).

This 3-10 season is impacting Tunsil, who has been very good. He is not among the top 10 in fan votes for the Pro Bowl.

Practice notes | Ben Sinnott ready to ‘do what I know I can do’

“I’m excited to…do what I know I can do,” Sinnott said.

Sinnott was the second tight end taken off the board when the Commanders selected him with the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was praised for his route running coming out of Kansas State, where he recorded 1,138 yards and 10 touchdowns on 82 receptions over three seasons, as well as his potential as a blocker. He’s done more of the latter during his NFL career, with more than a third of his snaps coming on special teams. Over the last two seasons, he has had nine catches on nine targets for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

The Commanders, who already had their primary starting and backup tight ends in Ertz and John Bates when they drafted Sinnott, have tried to give him time to develop as the third player on the depth chart. So far, Sinnott has felt the effects of that approach. He said the game is slowing down for him, and he’s gaining confidence in his role within Washington’s scheme.

Quinn has noticed the work he’s put in to improve, too. He’s seen the extra work he’s done with Ertz on the sideline during practice, and Quinn said it’s made a noticeable difference in his development. “We feel his speed,” Quinn added, “we feel his energy to go do that.”

Sinnott has shown flashes of what he can do as a pass catcher over the last two years. He made a 22-yard grab — the longest of his career so far — in Week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Two weeks later, he got the second touchdown catch of his career on a four-yard pass from Marcus Mariota against the Detroit Lions.

After the game, Quinn said it has been good to see the improvements Sinnott has made “come to life” in a game scenario. And after seeing him start to make more plays, Quinn has more confidence that he’sready for a larger role.

It’s been difficult for Sinnott to get on the field, though, mostly because of the overall talent in the position group. Ertz is one of the best tight ends in NFL history, and Bates, while not a pass-catcher, provides invaluable snaps as a blocker. Ertz said that there are few people on the planet who can block like Bates, and it’s been hard for the Commanders to justify leaving either player on the sideline.

That doesn’t mean Kingsbury or anyone else on the coaching staff is down on what Sinnott has to offer.

“He’s a dynamic player in space for that type of position,” Kingsbury said. “[He] Can create separation, all those things … He’s progressed just the way we want.”

NFC East roundup | Commanders begin final division stretch

It is the first time the Commanders will face quarterback Jaxson Dart under center; Week 1 in Washington, quarterback Russell Wilson, who has now been relegated to the No. 3 emergency quarterback position with Jameis Winston serving as the backup, was at the helm. The Commanders will be facing a well-rested Giants team, who are coming off a late Week 14 bye.

Both Washington and New York are among the league’s worst defenses, ranked No. 30 and No. 31, respectively. Offensively, the Giants have a slight offensive edge against the Commanders’ offense. The difference in this game could come down to turnovers, which Washington had three of against Minnesota, while New York had a fumble lost to the New England Patriots in its Week 13 Monday Night Football matchup.

Riggo’s Rag

7 players the Commanders could turn to for Zach Ertz replacement in 2026

Commanders could draft Kenyon Sadiq

There is a cheaper way to fill the void left by Zach Ertz. The Commanders could identify a talented prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft, but that would carry more risk. Much will depend on how those in power view Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff. However, nothing should be off the table at this early juncture.

Arguably, the best tight end prospect coming out this year is Kenyon Sadiq. The Oregon sensation has flourished with the Ducks this season. He’s explosive and dynamic, and he makes the complex look routine. He’ll be a hot commodity after the pre-draft testing process, so expect to hear his name in the first round at some stage.

It’s improbable that the Commanders will spend what could be a top-five pick on Sadiq. But if Peters can negotiate a trade down for more assets, that could give him the luxury to take this sort of swing.

Commanders could sign Kyle Pitts

Even though Kyle Pitts hasn’t quite reached the generational talent hype coming out of Florida, there will be a queue of suitors if the Atlanta Falcons let him test the market next spring. And don’t be surprised if the Commanders are among the first to make him an offer.

Pitts is athletic, experienced, and can completely take over games when in the mood. Finding the right consistency can be challenging at times. Still, linking up with quarterback Jayden Daniels would be a tempting proposition for someone with a lot of good football left.

This isn’t the type of veteran Adam Peters has looked to in the past. Pitts is firmly in his prime, representing a long-term part of the plans. After how things have unfolded for Washington this season, pulling off a signing like this would represent a significant statement of intent about the future.

It’s hard to gauge what Pitts’ future holds in Atlanta. But make no mistake, the Commanders should be monitoring developments closely.

Washington Post (paywall)

Commanders mailbag: How do they fix this mess ahead of next season?

Why does the OC not have Jayden Daniels be under center more often? — Timothy Hannan

Tom:
No team in the NFL has operated out of pistol or shotgun more frequently than the Commanders in 2025. They’re under center less than 10 percent of the time, according to TruMedia. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was asked about this last month and said that while there are several layers to this, he defaults to pistol and shotgun primarily because that’s what Daniels ran in college. “We want to tailor offense to what he is used to, comfortable with and does the best,” Kingsbury said. When the Commanders’ offense struggles, I know it’s tempting to view more under-center snaps as a solution. But the fact is the team also led the league in shotgun snaps last season and had a ton of success. The truth is the unit just has to execute better.

I know the Commanders have had A LOT of injuries this year, but to me the most glaring shortcomings are both the offensive and defensive lines. How are the Commanders going to address this problem? — Barry Tiller

Tom:
I don’t think the offensive line is going to change a ton, with the possible exception of left guard, where Chris Paul will be a free agent and perhaps looking for a raise. The defensive line, though, could get an overhaul. Payne is scheduled to make $28.1 million next season and could be a trade chip. And the only defensive linemen signed beyond 2026 are Javon Kinlaw, Jer’Zhan Newton and Javontae Jean-Baptiste. Quinn cut his teeth as a defensive line coach and knows the lack of pressure up front has had massive ripple effects on the rest of the defense. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Commanders spend a bit on a quality free agent here, use a high-draft pick to get someone up front — or perhaps both.

With such a rotten season and steps back for the offense, is Kliff Kingsbury’s opportunity to be a head coach now off the board? — Vernon Campbell

Tom:
This question really gets at some of the stark truths about hiring in the NFL. Kingsbury is the same guy he was a year ago, so in theory, he should still be a hot head coaching candidate. But the reality is that Kingsbury is a retread head coach. And we’ve historically seen retreads only hired when their team is winning or their specific unit is excelling. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Kingsbury generated interest, I think guys such as Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady or Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak are more likely to get jobs. For better or worse (and often worse), many owners would rather take a flier on an unproven hotshot than someone who has done it before.

NFL Week 15 picks: Upset and score predictions, matchup breakdowns for every game

temp-commies-at-giants.jpg

Why Dan picked the Giants: Don’t tell me there’s nothing on the line in this meeting between NFC East cellar-dwellers. The game has major draft order implications, with the Giants currently holding the No. 3 pick and the Commanders at No. 6. Washington will be well on its way to picking inside the top five for the second time in three years if it can’t pull the upset. It’s tough to know what to expect here.

Neither squad has won a game since early October, with both teams playing competitive ball some weeks and getting trounced in others. Jayden Daniels has been ruled out, but I’m not sure it matters much, considering Washington was scorched, 31-0, by the Vikings in Daniels’ start last week. Marcus Mariota has had his moments filling in for Daniels, but he’s also turned the ball over six times in his six starts.

Giants rookie Jaxson Dart has given the ball away just twice in his last six starts. Give me the team that’s playing at home and coming off a bye.

Jason Kelce gets brutally honest about the Eagles’ positivity bunny

A.J. Dillon decided that the locker room needed some good vibes by way of a gigantic inflatable Easter bunny. It seemed like something that could help the situation, but after their Monday night loss to the Chargers, the playful decoration was removed.

Former Eagles captain Jason Kelce spoke about the positivity bunny on the most recent episode of ‘New Heights,’ and gave his honest opinion about the silly addition to the locker room last week.

“If I’m being very brutally honest, I thought it was a surprise to see the rabbit, because, I’m like, it’s a sign of just too much joking around with something that I think is actually like, you should be really f***ing pissed off about the way you’re playing.

It’s okay to be positive, but this is something you do when everything’s rolling and you’re freaking performing well. You don’t do antics like this when you’ve shit the bed for the last couple weeks.“

Kelce’s opinion didn’t stray far from many fans, who saw the gimmick as nothing more than a distraction to the real problems the team’s been having.

Both Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts have been quoting Jeff Stoutland this week, emphasizing that execution fuels emotion, and if they want better vibes, they need to play better football.

Eagles Injury Report: Lane Johnson on track to miss Raiders game and his backup was limited

The Eagles listed three players under DID NOT PARTICIPATE: Lane Johnson, Jalen Carter, and Landon Dickerson.

A second straight DNP for Lane Johnson indicates the Eagles’ starting right tackle is on track to miss Sunday’s game. Additional reporting from Jeff McLane also suggests as much.

Carter is on track to miss his second straight start.

Dickerson was DNP on Thursday after being listed as limited on Wednesday. He had “rest” added to this injury description, however, so it seems like he should be able to suit up on Sunday. The Eagles also rested Dickerson in their second practice of the week leading up to Week 14. Brett Toth is the top backup at left guard.

The Eagles listed one player under LIMITED PARTICIPATION: Fred Johnson.

Fred Johnson is a new addition to the injury report with an ankle issue. It seems like he got banged up during Thursday’s practice. It’s certainly not a good development for the Eagles if neither Lane Johnson nor Fred Johnson can play right tackle on Sunday. The team would be down to their third-string option at that point … and it’s probably Matt Pryor, who struggled and got benched in favor of Fred Johnson earlier this season.

CeeDee Lamb gives optimistic update on concussion, status vs. Vikings

The moment was a terrifying one for all who watched helplessly as CeeDee Lamb’s helmet banged against the turf at Ford Field last week, the Dallas Cowboys’ All-Pro wide receiver blacking out for a moment as his fingers locked, similar to what was witnessed on multiple occasions by Tua Tagovailoa, and it was immediately known he suffered a concussion against the Detroit Lions.

He was immediately removed from the contest and ruled out with said concussion, but he’s made significant progress toward potentially clearing the league’s protocol to take the field in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Lamb made it to the team’s charter flight to depart with his teammates, and with no assistance needed, bags or otherwise, then showing up to work out on Monday, and he’s since returned to full practice duties — effective Thursday — more great signs that he does have “only one or two” more benchmarks to clear, per head coach Brian Schottenheimer, before being released from the league’s concussion protocol.

NY Giants awarded wide receiver from Tampa Bay Buccaneers via waivers

Giants continue tweaking the bottom of their roster

The New York Giants on Thursday claimed wide receiver Ryan Miller off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Miller, is a 6-foot-2, 221-pound receiver who played college football at Furman. He has two receptions for 34 yards in 13 games this season. In 25 career games, he has 14 receptions, with three of those for touchdowns.

Miller has been a core special teams player for the Buccaneers, playing 60% of Tampa Bay’s special teams snaps this season.

No corresponding roster move was announced. The Giants, though, do have wide receiver/kick returner Gunner Olszewski in the concussion protocol after a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit Week 13 against the New England Patriots.

Falcons complete comeback as Bucs drop from first in NFC South

The Falcons came back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-28 at Raymond James Stadium. The win was capped by Falcons kicker Zane Gonzalez, who hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired.

The Falcons were led by monster nights from quarterback Kirk Cousins, running back Bijan Robinson and tight end Kyle Pitts Sr.

Cousins finished 30-of-44 for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns, Robinson had 19 carries for 93 yards and another 82 receiving yards on eight catches, and Pitts had a night to remember, exploding for 11 catches for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns.

This loss was a big blow for the Buccaneers, who are battling the Carolina Panthers for the NFC South crown. Tampa falls half a game behind Carolina with three weeks to go.

Tampa Bay has won once in its past six games, while Atlanta won just its second game in its past nine.

NFL.com

Falcons-Buccaneers on ‘Thursday Night Football’: What We Learned from Atlanta’s 29-28 win

Just a crushing loss for the stumbling Bucs. Leading by two scores early in the fourth quarter, the Bucs appeared to be putting the Falcons away and making them pay for their countless mistakes throughout the game. But Tampa Bay’s defense allowed the Falcons to drive twice for touchdowns, with Baker Mayfield’s interception an absolute killer with just over eight minutes left. Even though the Falcons missed two two-point tries, Atlanta stopped Mayfield and the Bucs’ offense with just under two minutes left and drove 45 yards to set up Zane Gonzalez’ game-winning kick. This loss (the Bucs’ sixth in seven games since the bye) helped push the Panthers into first place heading into Sunday’s matchup at the Saints, and it suddenly puts the Bucs in real danger of missing the postseason for the first time since the 2019 season. Not even Mike Evans’ impressive return to the field could spur the Buccaneers enough. The division will still come down to the Bucs’ two matchups with Carolina, but with the way they’re playing, you have to say the Panthers have the edge now.

Pitts made money with career-best game. One of the more intriguing 2026 free agents is helping his cause to get paid in the offseason, and Thursday was his best game yet. Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts registered career highs in receptions (11), receiving yards (166) and touchdowns (three), lifting the Falcons to the stunning win. Pitts had two of his three scores in the first half, helping Atlanta take a 14-13 lead into the break, and his 7-yard TD catch — with his keister barely touching in the end zone before his elbow hit out — with 3:34 left cut the Bucs’ lead to two points. Atlanta faced a third-and-28 on the final drive, but Pitts’ 14-yard catch at least made the fourth down manageable, with David Sills (who dropped a would-be TD earlier) snagging a 21-yarder on fourth-and-14 to put the Falcons in business. But the story on the night was Pitts, who was shredding the Bucs even after they issued extra defensive attention his way. The 25-year-old hasn’t produced as expected — he had one TD coming into the game — but has been on a recent hot streak and could parlay that into a big March payday.

Pro Football Talk

Falcons’ 19 penalties were the most in an NFL game in nine years

Atlanta committed 19 accepted penalties for a total of 125 yards on Thursday night. That’s the most accepted penalties in an NFL game in nine years.

The last time a team committed more penalties than that was October 30, 2016, when the Raiders committed 23 accepted penalties. That game was also against the Buccaneers, and the Buccaneers also managed to find a way to lose that one, 30-24 in overtime, despite all their opponents’ miscues.

On Thursday night the Bucs committed just four accepted penalties, for 25 yards. But they lost 29-28 despite the huge advantage in penalty margin.

Todd Bowles lets the expletives fly in post-game press conference

Asked what he tells the team in the locker room after a game like this, Bowles was blunt. And repeatedly profane.

“It’s inexcusable,” Bowles said. “We don’t make excuses. We — you gotta fucking care enough where the shit hurts. You gotta fucking care enough where the shit hurts. Gotta fucking mean something to you. It’s more than a job, it’s your fucking livelihood. How well do you know your job? How well can you do your job? You can’t sugar coat that shit. It was in-fucking-excusable. And there’s no fucking answer for it. There’s no excuse for it. That’s what you tell them in the locker room. Look in the fucking mirror.”

He’s right. The problem is that, the buck for the Bucs ultimately stops with him. Salary-cap consequences limit the number of players that can be dumped after a given season. There’s no cap charge for changing coaches.

But there’s still hope, for the Buccaneers and for Bowles. They can wake up, win out, secure the division, and get to the playoffs for the sixth straight year. Bowles’s ability to keep his current job may indeed be hinging on it.

The #Falcons last night had…

Commanders vs Giants Friday Injury Report: CB depth thin with another starter ruled out

gettyimages-2249774615.jpg

The Washington Commanders held their third, and final practice before they travel to New Jersey to take on the New York Giants on Sunday. Three players have been ruled out, and another two are questionable. Jayden Daniels was ruled out earlier in the week, and Dan Quinn said he’s still not cleared for contact. He was limited in practice this week, and the team will reassess him for the final three games of the season. He reaggravated the injury when he returned a month after the original elbow dislocation.

Drake Jackson also continues to sit out as he attempts to return from a patellar tendon injury from 2023. He was activated from IR last week, and has only had two limited practices since then.

Starting CB Jonathan Jones didn’t practice all week, and has been ruled out with a new rib injury. He returned from IR in Week 7, and has been a starter for the last four games. This leaves the team thin at CB for the Giants game, with only Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and Antonio Hamilton Sr healthy on the 53-man roster. They also have Tre Hawkins, Darius Rush, and Kevon Seymour available to elevate from the practice squad.

Two players are questionable for the Giants game. RB Chris Rodriguez Jr was limited the last two days with a new groin injury. Washington signed Chase Edmonds from the practice squad earlier this week, giving them another option if Rodriguez is limited, or can’t play on gameday.

Deebo Samuel is also questionable after missing today’s practice with an illness.

WR Noah Brown returned from IR last week, but will likely remain on the injury report for the rest of the season. He suffered a knee injury during June’s mandatory mini-camp, and then a groin injury during Week 2. Brown and Terry McLaurin both had planned rest days today.

Daily Slop: 13 Dec 25 – Laremy Tunsil wants to stay in Washington beyond 2026 with a contract extension this offseason

Washington Post (paywall)

Laremy Tunsil: ‘I want to be paid.’ He’d like it to be Commanders’ money.

The offensive tackle, who came to Washington in an offseason trade, has been as good as promised, and he’ll be seeking a contract extension after this year.

Through 13 games, he has played at a high level for the Commanders. That deal he signed with Houston is set to expire after the 2026 season. Extension talks between Tunsil and GM Adam Peters almost certainly await this offseason.

“Whatever happens, happens,” Tunsil said. “Of course, I want to be paid. Of course, I want to stay with this organization. … When we get to the offseason, we can handle it.”

Tunsil, who will turn 32 before the start of next season, is set to make a base salary of $20.95 million. The highest-paid left tackle in the NFL is Los Angeles Chargers star Rashawn Slater, who’ll be just 27 in 2026 and makes an average annual salary of $28.5 million.

It’s unclear if the Commanders will be willing to go that high, but Tunsil has again performed among the league’s top left tackles this season. He has been an elite run blocker. As a pass protector, he has allowed just two sacks (tied for third among players who have spent at least 300 snaps at left tackle) and 15 pressures (tied for second), according to TruMedia.

always think I’m the best. That’s just how I’m wired,” Tunsil said. “I feel like my play speaks for itself. The tape don’t lie.”

Tunsil spends a large chunk of every offseason working with his personal offensive line coach in Auburn, Alabama. This time around, he invited young Commanders offensive linemen Josh Conerly Jr. and Brandon Coleman. His preparation was intense, but that’s his norm.

Tunsil is supremely confident, but he’s also self-aware enough to criticize himself. Last year, he led the NFL with 17 accepted penalties. In an effort to cut down that number, he focused on his fundamentals. Although he has long been a premier pass blocker, he also made it a point of emphasis to improve as a run blocker.

Those efforts have brought results. Tunsil is responsible for just five accepted penalties this season. He’s also been a big reason the Commanders are averaging 4.9 yards per carry (seventh-best in the NFL).

I’ve been “complete as a whole player from top to bottom,” Tunsil said.

3 keys to Commanders vs. Giants

Get off the field on third down.

The Vikings have one of the league’s worst third-down offenses, but you wouldn’t have guessed that looking at the stat sheet from last weekend’s game. They converted six of their 11 attempts against the Commanders after the Seattle Seahawks held them to 2-of-10 the week before.

The Giants present a more difficult challenge, converting 41.14% of their third downs. Dart’s legs provide the Giants with an extra dimension for defenses to account for. He leads the team with seven rushing touchdowns and is second on the team with 5.5 yards per carry. In the passing game, tight end Theo Johnson ranks second on the team in targets, receptions and yards. Twenty-three of his 42 receptions have resulted in first downs.

There were several reasons why the Commanders had problems against the Vikings, but one of the biggest was that they allowed McCarthy to get in a rhythm and gave him easier looks to dissect. Dart has proven he can be a potent threat to any defense, holding his own against teams like the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

The Commanders only forced one punt from the Vikings last week. They will need to do better than that to give themselves a chance against the Giants.

Four young Commanders to watch down the stretch

Defensive tackle Johnny Newton

It’s doubtful that his play time will increase over the final four games. He’s playing behind starters Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw, but he’s another second-round pick from 2024 who needs to factor in Washington’s future.

The Commanders need to make a decision on Payne in the offseason — he has a $28 million cap hit in 2026; the team could save $16.8 million if it released him. Regardless, it would be helpful for Washington if Newton ascends.

He has an 8.7% pressure rate, up from 5.8 as a rookie. He has two sacks, same as last year. He has just two tackles for loss and hasn’t registered a quarterback hit in the last five games.

Washington has used Newton at end in recent games, sometimes as a stand-up rusher from that spot.

“It makes me more versatile,” Newton said. “I remember growing up watching Aaron Donald get reps on the edge, Chris Jones get reps on the edge.

“With my athleticism coaches knew I was capable of getting some d-end reps. Everybody knows I’m an inside guy, get off the ball, but whatever I can do to help the team win I’ll do.”

Defensive line coach Darryl Tapp said Newton has had a steep learning curve. Before his first camp Newton dealt with two foot surgeries. That made last season a “work in progress.” This year they’ve focused on details with Newton: getting out of his stance the proper way, how to attack blocks based on the stance you take.

“I know that [his impact] can be kind of taken out of context with him being a second-round pick,” Tapp said. “I get that. So you expect more of him. But now he’s behind two to three big deal savvy vets and this is an opportunity for him. … He’s so athletic and explosive, you can use him in different ways. We’re just trying to find ways to get him on the field.”

7 Commanders players dangerously close to being done in Washington

Jonathan Jones – Commanders CB

This is not a time to be sentimental or emotionally attached. Adam Peters has displayed a cutthroat mindset since joining the Washington Commanders, and that must continue. He might not like some choices, but the difficult decisions must be made for the greater good.

Jonathan Jones is an interesting case. The veteran cornerback joined the Commanders in free agency after a prolific spell with the New England Patriots. He brought outstanding production and Super Bowl-winning credentials to the table. He thought linking up with head coach Dan Quinn could get him another ring, but it’s been far from that case.

The Commanders have failed to meet the required standards. Jones’ contribution has been fleeting, restricted by injury. He’s played a lot more in recent weeks after returning to health. Still, one couldn’t look at his performance levels and think he’d get another extension from the organization next spring.

Massive changes are coming to the cornerback unit this offseason. And when the dust settles, Jones will probably be playing in a different uniform next season.

Signing him was a good move by Peters, but things just haven’t worked out as anyone hoped.

Trent Scott – Commanders OL

The Washington Commanders haven’t had many positives to speak of this season. However, the offensive line is undeniably their most encouraging bright spot amid the almost constant doom and gloom.

If the Commanders extend Chris Paul, their starting five offensive linemen will all be back. That will be a massive boost to continuity. It will also allow general manager Adam Peters to focus on bolstering the depth options rather than anything more drastic.

It’ll be interesting to see what Peters decides, but things aren’t looking especially promising for Trent Scott. He’s done well to last this long under the current regime, especially given the fact that he was a Ron Rovera holdover. That’s down to his versatility, and he was also the player who unbelievably caught Jayden Daniels’ first touchdown pass in the NFL.

That will be something for Scott to tell his grandkids one day. But he should be looking for alternative employment next spring.

Game status | Chris Rodriguez, Deebo Samuel QUESTIONABLE for Sunday vs. Giants

Running back Chris Rodriguez and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are both questionable for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Rodriguez, who has dealt with a groin injury this week, did not participate in practice on Wednesday but returned in a limited capacity on Thursday and Friday. Samuel was added to the injury report on Friday with an illness and was given the day off by the coaching staff.

Rodriguez, a 2023 sixth-round pick, has emerged as the Commanders’ primary running back over the last few weeks. Rodriguez has averaged 4.6 yards per carry in 11 games, but his usage has increased since the Commanders’ Week 9 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Over the last five games, he has led the team with 253 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 54 carries.

The Commanders have three options to replace Rodriguez if he is inactive on Sunday. Veteran Jeremy McNichols provides help as a pass catcher in addition to averaging 6.6 yards per carry. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, despite his role decreasing in recent weeks, adds quickness and vision as a runner.

Chase Edmonds, who was added to the active roster following Zach Ertz’s season-ending ACL tear, is also an option. Edmonds has 1,972 yards and 11 touchdowns on 450 carries in seven seasons.

Drake Jackson : Sidelined for Week 15

Jackson (knee/groin) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Giants. Jackson was able to practice in a limited capacity Thursday and Friday, but he has not progressed enough in his recovery to be cleared to play Sunday. He continues to work through a lingering knee injury from 2023 — along with a newer groin issue — and will aim to be available for Week 16 against the Eagles on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Playoffs

Pro Football Talk

In Week 15, there’s only one meaningless game

[E]ven with nine teams (nearly a third of the entire league) eliminated from playoff contention, only one game will be truly meaningless: Commanders at Giants. The other 15, starting with Thursday night’s Falcons-Bucs game, have at least one team that has postseason aspirations.

The fact that the Falcons, who are out, upended the Bucs, who are desperately trying to get in, underscores the reality that the teams playing for nothing won’t necessarily be checking one of the few remaining boxes before it’s time to get a much-deserved break from football.

The biggest games mean something for both teams. In Bills-Patriots (1:00 p.m. ET), it’s Buffalo’s last-ditch effort to stay in the division race. The Patriots, in turn, hope to clinch their first AFC East title since 2019 while also continuing to push for the lone AFC first-round bye.

For the 9-4 Chargers and the 6-7 Chiefs, L.A.’s opportunity for its first sweep of the Chiefs since 2013 also includes a chance to ensure that the AFC playoff tree will omit the team that has climbed to the top of it five times in six seasons.

Packers-Broncos at 4:25 p.m. ET could be a Super Bowl preview.

Lions-Rams (4:25 p.m. ET) has the obvious storyline featuring the quarterbacks who were traded for each other (with the Lions also getting two first-round picks and a third-round pick) nearly five years ago. But the 8-5 Lions are currently on the outside looking in, and the 10-3 Rams have very realistic No. 1 seed aspirations.

In the Sunday night window, it’s a literal elimination game for the 5-8 Vikings — and a de facto go-home proposition for the 6-6-1 Cowboys.

The 8-5 Eagles need to prove to the world that they aren’t slipping and sliding out of the NFC East lead against a 3-10 Raiders team with nothing to lose (except their eighth game in a row).

Jalen Hurts quieted his doubters in February. They’re awfully loud again.

NFL primer: The Eagles’ offense is a mess, and much of the finger-pointing is directed at Hurts, who had five turnovers in Philadelphia’s third straight loss.

Until Monday, turnovers by Hurts had not been the Eagles’ problem. He had thrown 19 touchdown passes with only two interceptions in the season’s first 12 games. But he threw four interceptions and didn’t have a touchdown pass Monday. He threw an interception and then, after the Chargers fumbled on the return and Hurts made the recovery, lost a fumble on the same play. And after the Chargers got a field goal on the opening possession of overtime, Hurts led the Eagles into the red zone before throwing an interception to end the 22-19 loss.

— NFL (@NFL) December 9, 2025

The Eagles have plenty that must be fixed on offense. Barkley ran for 122 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers; but he’s on course for a comparatively modest 1,127 rushing yards this season after having the ninth 2,000-yard season in NFL history last season. Brown has had three straight 100-yard receiving games; but that’s after his modest role in the offense created so much consternation earlier in the season.

The tush push has not been as automatic as it usually is: The Eagles’ conversion rate on it is 67 percent, down from 85 percent over the previous three seasons, according to the ESPN broadcast Monday.

The recent spiral has raised fears about a repeat of the 2023 collapse in which the Eagles, on the heels of their Super Bowl defeat to the Chiefs, followed a 10-1 start by losing five of their final six regular season games and exiting the playoffs in the opening round.

Maybe the seventh time will be the charm as the Giants look for a coach

Since parting with Tom Coughlin after the 2015 season, owner John Mara has struck out six times trying to find a winning coach.

The list of coaches for the New York Football Giants in the 10 years since the venerable Tom Coughlin “stepped down” — or, more to the point, was pushed out — does not exactly bathe this once-great franchise in glory.

In no way does that list indicate an ownership group that is remotely astute at staffing this position, and if anything it reveals a flawed process marred by a particular commonality. It has prompted a major course correction in how the Giants’ latest coaching search will unfold. Owner John Mara won’t get fooled again by someone who has never coached an NFL team or a major college program, finally learning from mistake after mistake. After firing Brian Daboll midseason, he wants someone who has already done this job, quite preferably with at least a modicum of success along the way.

This hardly ensures what was once considered a model front office won’t butcher this most important hire yet again. No one who has been paying attention would believe in that group. It’s also clear that a fan base in despair won’t subscribe to another complete start-up overseen by someone they have barely heard of who has questionable qualifications. There’s every reason to believe on-the-job experience will carry massive weight as the Giants interview and weed through candidates in the coming weeks.

The Giants have one playoff victory since Coughlin left. They have one 10-win season since (2016 with McAdoo). They have not won the division since 2011. They have been victorious in five of 30 football games since the start of the 2024 season. Since Coughlin departed, Giants coaches have a combined record of 53-107-1. None has surpassed even 20 wins at the helm.

Just consider the past six Giants coaches since Coughlin’s quasi-retirement: Mike Kafka, Brian Daboll, Joe Judge, Pat Shurmur, Steve Spagnuolo and Ben McAdoo. Apologies for making you read that. But facts are facts. That’s the list.

“It’s not going to be another first-time guy, I promise you that,” said a high-ranking official of one NFL team who could possibly be involved in a coaching search and spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not permitted to speak publicly about other team’s hires. “… It’s not going to be [Brian] Daboll 2.0. They want someone who has done it before.”

For what it’s worth, the betting markets have long favored former Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy for the position, and while it’s hard to imagine him not getting consideration, it also feels a little too old-school for an owner who seemingly wants to change his spots.

NY Giants edge defender to miss another game; Backup CB done for year

Kayvon Thibodeaux will miss his fourth straight game for the New York Giants on Sunday. Thibodeaux, who has a shoulder injury has been ruled out against the Washington Commanders.

Giants backup cornerback Nic Jones is done for the season. He will have shoulder surgery. That was first reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic. Jones has been a key special teams contributor, and his injury is one reason why the Giants on Thursday claimed Ryan Miller on waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Miller, a 6-foot-2, 221-pound wide receiver, had been a core special teams player for Tampa Bay.

Interim head coach Mike Kafka said on Friday that wide receiver/kick returner Gunner Olszewski had progressed to the next step of the concussion protocol, and could clear in time to play Sunday.

Punter Jamie Gillan will not kick on Friday, but the Giants were not yet ready to rule him out on Friday morning. Still, it seems likely that veteran punter Cameron Johnston, signed to the practice squad this week, will be punting.

Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, questionable with a hamstring injury, was a new addition to the injury report.

T.J. Watt’s collapsed lung injury update, dry needling explained

“Yesterday TJ had successful surgery to stabilize and repair a partially collapsed lung suffered Wednesday after a dry needling treatment session at the facility,” J.J. Watt wrote on social media. “Recovery timeline is still TBD, but all went well and he is being released from the hospital today. He and his family are very appreciative of everyone’s kind words and well wishes.”

Dry needling isn’t unusual during an NFL player’s physical therapy, but a significant incident like this is uncommon.

Did Watt have a chest or back injury before the dry needling?

Watt has not been listed on the team practice or injury report this season. Tomlin also said Thursday that, to his knowledge, Watt didn’t have an injury that was worthy of being on an injury report or after the Steelers’ Week 14 game.

What is dry needling? What is required to legally administer dry needling? How safe is it?

Dry needling is a skilled intervention where the provider uses a thin needle to penetrate the skin with the goal of alleviating pain and improving movement. Unlike “wet” needling, which utilizes a hollow bore needle (which has a central channel to allow liquid to pass through it) to inject a medication, dry needling utilizes a solid needle and no substance is injected.

Common applications for dry needling include, but aren’t limited to, muscle pain/strains (e.g., hamstring, quad), tendinitis/tendinopathy (e.g., patellofemoral, biceps, rotator cuff), plantar fasciitis and headaches. Utilization has expanded within the past decade, in particular, and it is not uncommon to see dry needling in most athletic rehabilitation settings or training rooms.

[Note from BiB in the difference between acupuncture & dry needling (per Google): Acupuncture comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, targeting meridian lines to balance overall Qi (energy) for broad wellness, while Dry Needling is a Western technique focusing on anatomical trigger points (muscle knots) to relieve localized musculoskeletal pain, often within physical therapy]

What should be the typical prognosis for Watt? Will there be any long-term effects?

The most critical aspect of Watt’s case is that once he reported symptoms and was evaluated, he was sent to the hospital for care emergently and treated promptly by the appropriate personnel. This gives him an excellent chance of full recovery.

Lung tissue is remarkably resilient, especially in a young, healthy athlete. A lung injury like Watt’s has the potential to heal within 7-10 days, and there should be no long-term effects.

Is this like the Tyrod Taylor situation? What are the differences?

Taylor was reportedly dealing with two cracked ribs and received a pregame pain-relieving injection, the intent of which was to decrease localized pain and allow him to compete on game day. The needle punctured a lung, and the result was a pneumothorax (where air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest wall, putting pressure on or “collapsing” the lung).

In Watt’s situation, according to his brother JJ, he suffered a partially collapsed lung (also a pneumothorax) after a dry needling treatment session. By definition, dry needling means no medication was being delivered via the needle, making this different from Taylor’s specific procedure.

Washington Commanders Roster Moves: CB elevated from practice squad

gettyimages-2220103576.jpg

The Washington Commanders only made one move before tomorrow’s game against the New York Giants. Cornerback depth was thin with Jonathan Jones out with a rib injury. Washington was down to Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and Antonio Hamilton Sr. on the active roster.

Darius Rush was elevated from the practice squad for the first time this season. He was a 5th round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, and has been with several teams since entering the league. He signed to the Commanders practice squad after getting waived by the Browns before the season started.

Washington only elevated one player from the practice squad last week. DE DeMarcus Walker was active for the first time, and played 18 snaps on defense. Jalyn Holmes has been a healthy scratch the last few weeks, and could be active this week if needed.

Commanders Vs. Giants (Game Two) – Studs and Duds

With nothing left to play for this season except pride, Dan Quinn’s squad showed they still have some fight left in them. Despite being outgained in total yards 384-340, going just 3-11 on third downs, losing the turnover battle 2-1 and getting flagged 11 times on the afternoon, Washington escaped MetLife Stadium with a 29-21 victory.

The leg of Jake Moody and a HUGE punt return touchdown by rookie Jaylin Lane were the differences in the game. Against a better football team, the Commanders likely would have lost by at least 6 points, but against the lowly Giants, this performance resulted in a win.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.

Studs:

  • Bill Croskey-Merritt: Bill carried the ball 18 times for 96 yards and a 16-yard touchdown. He averaged 5.3 yards per touch. He still needs to work on blitz pickup, but he’s EASILY our most dynamic presence in the backfield.
Bill BURSTS for a 16yd TD! pic.twitter.com/Rrjc9TNtyx

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Jaylin Lane: Lane had a massive 63-yard punt return touchdown (his second of the season) that helped increase Washington’s lead. He had three returns for 91 yards and the score in the game. Lane was only targeted once and didn’t bring in the pass, but he showed well as a blocker on some quick screens.
Jaylin Lane punt return TD right before the half! pic.twitter.com/p9BT0yWZBa

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Sam Cosmi: Cosmi was a damn BULLY all game! He was opening up holes in the run game and keeping his defender at bay in pass protection. He’s had an excellent season since returning from a knee injury.
  • Quan Martin: Martin had what I felt was his best game of the season in both coverage and run support. He led the team with nine total tackles (seven solo) and showed well in coverage with a few nice plays including his defended pass in the endzone to save a touchdown.
Quan Martin with a nice pass defended in the endzone on a 4th and goal! pic.twitter.com/0HIoA3P21o

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Antonio Hamilton: Hamilton played a REALLY good game coming up with multiple big plays. He led the team with two passes defended and disrupted another that would have been a touchdown to Slayton. His coverage on the day was outstanding.
Give Hamilton credit here for helping disrupt this catch pic.twitter.com/OLBtCkZSaX

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025

Duds:

  • Josh Conerly: The rookie had a HORRID start to the game, collecting two penalties on the Commanders opening drive and giving up a strip-sack on Washington’s next offensive possession. He allowed multiple pressures and quarterback hits on the afternoon. It was a HUGE step backwards for a guy who had been paying pretty well over the last five games.
Josh Conerly couldn’t have started this game any worse…

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Jeremy McNichols: McNichols carried nine times for six yards, had a false start penalty and a bad fumble late in the game, and although that didn’t come back to bite Washington, things like that simply can’t happen.
McNichols fumble late in the 4th quarter pic.twitter.com/2Li1azg0dQ

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025

Notes:

  • Preston Smith played his best game in his second stint with Washington. He had two tackles, one for a loss, a quarterback hit and two pressures.
Preston Smith with the TFL pic.twitter.com/HyDOALzLHH

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Marcus Mariota was playing a pretty good game until his bone-headed fumble that almost came back to haunt Washington. He’s good for at least one of these plays every game. He had two fumbles in the game. One was lost. He did throw for 211 yards and a score, while adding 43 rushing yards – so overall it wasn’t a bad game for the veteran.
EVERY GAME Mariota is good for at least one bone-headed play. Here is that play… pic.twitter.com/23k10NKJor

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Terry McLaurin didn’t get his normal high snap count, but he had a big impact on the game with his 51-yard catch-and-run touchdown. He had three receptions for 69 yards and the score.
51yds from Mariota to McLaurin for the TD!!! pic.twitter.com/1Sy8DuKPLZ

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Mike Sainristil had a beautiful interception off Jaxson Dart. It was the eighth interception of his young career. Unfortunately, he was also picked on some during the game allowing five receptions and a touchdown.
Sainristil with the beautiful INT! pic.twitter.com/uqm7P3lrPP

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) December 14, 2025
  • Jake Moody connected on all three of his field goal attempts (46, 39 and 42 yards). He would have made the Studs list if it wasn’t for his missed extra-point and kickoff out of bounds right after that.

  • This staff is OBVIOUSLY trying to do whatever it can to get Bobby Wagner to 2,000 career tackles. Right now, he’s 30 tackles shy with three games left to play. Let’s hope he gets there because I don’t want him coming back for the 2026 season because he ended up six tackles shy!

The Ben Sinnott catch.

Nice route. Clearly a primary option (rare occasion). He puts his right foot in the ground to sell a shorter route and the DB squats. And then he beats him inside. Nice read and throw by Mariota, too. pic.twitter.com/a06h4Ezka5

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) December 15, 2025
In his first game without Zach Ertz, Ben Sinnott played on 57% of Commanders' snaps. He was on the field for 35 of Washington's 61 plays.

John Bates was the top guy in single TE sets (42 snaps). Sinnott saw just 1 target and made 1 catch in the game; same as Bates. pic.twitter.com/trVuniNVwc

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) December 15, 2025
I'm as annoyed by the 1 target for Ben Sinnott as anybody, but I will say that there are a few plays like this when you watch game back.

He's open a couple times and ball doesn't come his way. He was on the field for 11 passes, ran 10 routes, ball came near him twice. pic.twitter.com/Fdi9HC2hGL

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) December 15, 2025
Sinnott has been on a good streak of games as a blocker, with this Giants game up there among his best. He’s certainly earned more playing time and pass catching opportunities, but what John says is right here. Blocking really well from a variety of spots https://t.co/vDhDRwLtOS

— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) December 15, 2025
Do not underrate this skill. Yes Bates is a blocker but Sinnott adds quite a bit here too. Having more than one good blocker can open up the run game. Avoiding blowouts helps too.

This is a great chance for Commanders fans to spread the love and show appreciation for the rookie 7th round draft pick who has been a sensation and fan favorite since his arrival in Washington

Bill began his NFL career with an impressive Week 1 performance against the Giants was historic.

In that first game against the Giants, Bill ran for 82 yards and a touchdown, and won the Rookie of the Week voting. This time, with Chris Rodriguez injured and unavailable to help, Bill ran for 96 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers.

His 2-game production against the Giants is 178 yards & 2 touchdowns on 28 carries (6.4 yards per carrry). Impressive!

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels ‘super frustrated’ by season

Against Minnesota, Daniels was shoved to the ground while pursuing linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who had intercepted him. Daniels landed on his left elbow and stayed on the ground for a minute after the play before bouncing up and running to the sideline, clearly frustrated.

After the game, Quinn said Daniels could have returned to the game — he was never ruled out. But by Wednesday, the coach said that Daniels had aggravated the injury.

Daniels said, “Adrenaline is a hell of a drug. Things change when stuff settles down.”

He said that they did more tests the day after the game and that “I felt it.”

Daniels wanted to keep playing but, because he wasn’t cleared and because of the shortened week, the decision was made for him to stop.

“This was the right call,” Quinn said, “even though it was a difficult one.”

The Athletic (paywall)

Jayden Daniels ‘frustrated’ and ‘disappointed’ by injury-riddled season

Jayden Daniels described his injury-riddled 2025 season as “frustrating” and “disappointing” and wholly unlike anything he or the Commanders expected.

“A lot more emotions,” he said Tuesday in his first comments since coach Dan Quinn announced the quarterback will not play in Washington’s final three games. “… I don’t wanna miss games at all. I’ve been frustrated this whole season missing games. I want to be out there with my teammates as much as possible, so it’s just been a frustrating year at this point in the year, but you learn from it when you move forward.”

Only four of Daniels’ starts this season went all four quarters. And only two of his appearances resulted in wins. He’s the only quarterback in NFL history to win offensive rookie of the year and then play as few as seven games the next season, according to Next Gen Stats.

Adding to Daniels’ frustration, however, is the belief that at least two of his injuries were fluke incidents.

“Other than that one game I missed for the hamstring, I mean, my knee and obviously my elbow, those aren’t things that you could really necessarily prepare for,” he said. “Those are freak accidents and things like that, so it’s most definitely frustrating and, at that time, I would say, traumatic and stuff like that.”

Conerly did allow two pressures, including a sack, en route to earning his lowest PFF pass-blocking grade (55.8) since Week 7.

NFL offensive line rankings ahead of Week 16

7. Washington Commanders (No change)

Projected Week 16 starters:

LT Laremy Tunsil

Washington’s offensive line helped set the tone in a Week 15 win over the Giants. Across 26 dropbacks, the Commanders yielded four pressures — including just one sack — on their way a 90.4 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating, ranking eighth in the NFL.

It was not all good news for the Commanders’ offensive line, though. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil departed in Week 15 with an oblique injury. However, his replacement, Brandon Coleman, gave up no pressure on 14 dropbacks and earned a team-high 86.4 PFF pass-blocking grade.

Best player: Laremy Tunsil

Tunsil, who surrendered no pressure against the Giants, is uncertain to play in Week 16

Tunsil (oblique) was [listed with an injury] on Tuesday’s practice report. Tunsil sustained oblique and shoulder injuries during Sunday’s win over the Giants, but it is the former injury that he was tagged with to open Week 16 prep. Tunsil will have two more chances to practice ahead of Saturday’s game against the Eagles, but if he’s not cleared to play, then Brandon Coleman would be the top candidate to start at left tackle.

What is going on with Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys?

Late last week, Diggs said he expected to play against the Minnesota Vikings after a two-month absence from a concussion and a stint on injured reserve with a right knee injury. On Saturday, he was told he would be inactive again.

“I was upset,” Diggs said.

He watched the 34-26 loss Sunday from the sideline.

After the game, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said, “Diggs isn’t healthy enough to be out there for us. Period.”

During the week leading up to the game, coach Brian Schottenheimer alluded to things beyond Diggs’ health. He said coaches needed to see consistency in “everything” from Diggs, just as they see it from quarterback Dak Prescott, tight end Jake Ferguson and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

Schottenheimer said Monday. “I told him not only the reasons why but also the standards and expectations. So again, I’m always going to have real conversations. I would never not play a player and not explain to them why they weren’t going to play. I know he feels he’s ready, but in our long conversation, I thought I made it very clear. And so I’ll leave it at that.”

Whatever they discussed, Diggs said after the game he still didn’t know why he was not active.

“From the first conversation that we had, it was practice. I guess I wasn’t showing them what they wanted to see in practice,” Diggs said. “This week, I showed them what they wanted to see in practice and it’s still the same result. I don’t know what else I need to do or what to show. At this point I feel like it’s not even, it’s not up to me or what I do. It’s really up to them, and what they want to do. I’m just showing up every day. I’m going to go to work.”

Since signing a five-year extension worth $97 million that included $33 million guaranteed after he put up Pro Bowl seasons in 2021 and ’22 with 14 total interceptions, he has played in 19 of a possible 47 games.

He tore his left ACL in a Week 3 practice in 2023. He played in 11 games last season until it was determined he needed a chondral-tissue graft on his left knee.

That surgery was performed in January.

Diggs spent the offseason doing most of his rehab work in South Florida, which upset the organization. The team wanted him rehabbing with its athletic training staff, but Diggs said he felt more comfortable rehabbing with Dr. Sharif Tabbah of Alkeme Sports Rx.

The Cowboys enforced a $500,000 de-escalator clause in his contract, dropping his base salary to $8.5 million for 2025, for failing to take part in at least 84% of the voluntary offseason program.

He opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list but was activated in time to be ready for the regular-season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles. In six games, he was credited with 13 tackles and a tackle for loss, but he had more pressures (two) than interceptions (zero) and pass deflections (zero).

The right knee became problematic before the Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears. It wasn’t until he went through a pregame workout that he was OK to play. But in the first series, he gave up a long touchdown pass after playing the wrong technique.

He was inactive against the Washington Commanders and a week later was placed on injured reserve because of the right knee issue that would knock him out for the next four games.

The Cowboys began his practice window on Nov. 30. They have until Saturday to add him to the 53-man roster. If they don’t, he will revert to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

“I got healthy. I’m back healthy,” he said. “And I’m just waiting for, I guess, the opportunity.”

Big Blue View

How to Tank, by Joe Schoen

If the Giants are not trying to tank the season and “earn” the first pick in the draft, how do you explain Younghoe Koo? How do you justify Evan Neal being on the roster? Or having Jalin Hyatt run a middle-school level inbreaking route that baits Jaxson Dart into throwing an interception. Or – don’t get me started – a hundred other examples of complete and utter incompetency. No, this all has to be four dimensional chess level planning to ensure the first pick. I mean, no one can be this stupid, right? Hopefully, the Giants are paying Joe Schoen a bonus for earning that first pick… because he is unemployable going forward.

Washington Commanders vs Philadelphia Eagles Week 16: Five Questions with Bleeding Green Nation

2196095629.jpg

It’s week 16 of the NFL season and the 4-10 Washington Commanders will be facing a 9-5 Eagles team at home at Northwest Stadium on Saturday at 5:00 pm ET. The Eagles started the season extremely strong, going 8-3 to start the season, but lost 3 of their most recent 4 games before recovering with a blowout/shutout win against the Raiders last week.

On offense, the Eagles are in their first year with Kevin Patullo as OC and their fifth year of offensive-minded HC Nick Sirianni. The Eagles offense this year has been very up and down, with six games scoring fewer than 20 points and three games scoring more than 30 points. One of the biggest problems for the Eagles offense has been penalties and negative plays, as this year’s Eagles team currently has the most offensive penalties (47) and the highest zero-or-negative play percentage (33.6 percent) of the Sirianni era. Recently, the Eagles have used more under-center plays and RPOs to play to the strengths of QB Jalen Hurts and run more heavy packages with an extra TE or OL to try to kickstart their stalled run game. They have also used more play action and crossing routes to open up the middle of the field, which has resulted in increased production from TE Dallas Goedert, who has received 17 targets over the last 2 games. Overall, the Eagles offense ranks 22nd in passing yards, 19th in rushing yards, and 18th in total points.

On defense, the Eagles are in their second year with Vic Fangio at DC. Fangio typically runs a 3-4 front and 2 deep safeties to limit explosive plays. He also typically runs a light box, relying on stout defensive lineman to stop the run while dropping most of his players back in coverage. This worked well last year, but ran into issues this year after the departure of DT Milton Williams and EDGE Josh Sweat in free agency and the retirement of Brandon Graham. The Eagles have managed to fortify their DL midseason by trading a 3rd-round pick to the Dolphins for talented EDGE Jaelan Phillips and convincing Brandon Graham to come out of retirement midway through the season, though the defense has remained vulnerable to the run. Overall, the Eagles defense has remained one of the NFL’s better defenses, ranked 9th in passing yards allowed, 22nd in rushing yards allowed, and 5th in total points allowed.

I asked Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation five questions to better understand the state of the Eagles and what to look for in this game.

1) How has the offensive scheme and play-calling changed under OC Kevin Patullo and how much of the offensive design should be credited to him vs Nick Sirianni vs. Jalen Hurts?

Sirianni and Hurts definitely have significant input on the offense. It’s not like Patullo is bringing his vision to the table without them being heavily involved.

With that in mind, it’s not always simple to parse through who deserves credit/blame. And there’s certainly been more blame than credit going around this season. The Eagles have the most expensive offense in the NFL by a significant margin … and it’s a group that’s largely underperformed. Entering Week 15, the Eagles were in a five-game stretch where they scored just eight touchdowns. Only the Las Vegas Raiders had fewer in that same span.

The Eagles obviously looked better against those Raiders this past weekend. How much of that was genuine improvement on their own? How much of that was the fact that the Raiders are atrocious?

Eagles_Patullo.png

I know you’re the one asking me the questions but we’ve yet to see the answers in that regard. I think it’s fair to say that game was a step in the right direction for the Eagles. It could serve as a much-needed confidence boost.

But we previously saw the Eagles make some strides on offense in wins over the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants before then only managing to score just two touchdowns in wins over the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.

So, I need to see more to truly believe the offense is on the right track. If they go out and stink again against Washington, that’ll be discouraging.

It’s easy to target Patullo since he’s the new variable in the equation. I don’t think he’s done an amazing job this year (except for in goal-to-go situations, where the Eagles have been really efficient). But I also think he’s hardly the only problem with the offense.

2) The Eagles offense has been really up and down this year. What seems to be the common factors through the Eagles good offensive games and the common factors through the Eagles bad offensive games this season?

We can dumb it down to Jalen Hurts playing well (or not) but I don’t even think that’s necessarily true. Hurts had a perfect passer rating against the Minnesota Vikings, for example, but I don’t think the offense as a whole really functioned well as much as he made big plays out of structure.

Quality of opponent has definitely been a factor. The Eagles’ two biggest games in terms of yardage gained were against the teams currently picking top two in the 2026 NFL Draft order: the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders.

Then again, an optimist could point out that the Eagles gained their third-highest yardage total against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14. Meaning that two of their three highest games have come over the past two weeks. Maybe they’re turning a corner. I still need to see more to truly believe it.

And that’s because the bad has been really bad. The Eagles have led the league in three-and-out percentage. The offense can go through really long stretches where it looks like moving the ball is an impossibility. It’s a bad combination of lacking schematic answers and poor execution in the form of missed throws, poor blocking, dumb penalties, or all of the above.

3) What has the Eagles special teams been like this year and are there any players on special teams particularly worth highlighting?

KICKER: Jake Elliott has had some struggles; he’s missed five field goal attempts and one extra point. It’s worth noting that all of his misses were with Cal Adomitis filling in at long snapper. The Eagles waived Adomitis last week and activated veteran Charley Hughlett from injured reserve. I don’t think Elliott’s misses were only about the long snapper change because he also had struggles in 2024. But Hughlett’s returned is welcomed nevertheless.

PUNTER: Braden Mann ranks fourth in punts this season with the Eagles going three-and-out way too often. His 42.7 net punting average ranks seventh in the NFL. He’s solid.

LONG SNAPPER: Already touched on this in the kicker section. Hughlett > Adomitis.

PUNT RETURNER: The Eagles originally had former Washington draft pick Jahan Dotson as their PR but he didn’t have a great feel for it, which makes sense given his lack of experience in that role. They then went with Xavier Gipson, who got cut by the New York Jets for fumbling issues. Gipson then had a really bad punt return in the Eagles’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys where he fielded the ball at the 2-yard line and then fumbled. The Eagles moved on from Gipson and signed Britain Covey, who had been on the practice squad all along, to the roster. Covey has been one of the best punt returners in the NFL over the past few seasons, so, it’s not exactly surprising to see that he’s having success once again with a 12.1 average. Just weird it took this long for the Eagles to go back to him.

KICK RETURNER: The Eagles rank 29th in kick return average. Not a strength.

ST COVERAGE: Special teams tackles numbers vary depending on the source but Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Kylen Granson, Kelee Ringo, and Cameron Latu are the Eagles’ leaders in that category. I especially enjoy watching Latu play because he looks like a beast out there. Latu is on the injury report this week, so, we’ll see if he plays … but if he does, don’t be surprised if you see No. 36 make a big hit on special teams.

PUNT/FG BLOCKS: Latu blocked a punt in the Eagles’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that got returned for a touchdown. Jalen Carter blocked a field goal in the Eagles’ win over the Los Angeles Rams … and so did Jordan Davis, on the Rams’ game-winning attempt.

4) Who is one Eagles player on offense and one player on defense that Washington fans probably don’t know much about, but should?

OFFENSE: Darius Cooper. The undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver was a summer standout, which helped him make the roster as a long shot. Cooper was a prolific pass-catcher for Division II Tarleton State but he’s done well to carve out a role as a dirty work player in the NFL. His blocking efforts and special teams contributions have led to him earning more playing time on offense, where he’s starting to show up a bit more. Cooper logged just two targets for seven receptions in his first eight games. He’s since had three targets for three catches and 48 yards in the past two games. Cooper also drew a pass interference penalty in Week 15. With Jahan Dotson set to be a free agent after this season, Cooper could be a contender to take over the WR3 role in 2026.

DEFENSE: Are Commanders fans super familiar with Jaelan Phillips? He’s a former first-round pick … but he played in a different conference before the Eagles traded for him. And he’s actually never played against Washington. So, to answer my own question: yes, I’m counting him. I think Phillips could be a huge factor in Saturday’s game. He’s been very disruptive and him going up against rookie right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. seems like a huge mismatch in Philly’s favor. Only nine players have generated more pressures than Phillips this season, according to Pro Footabll Focus.

Eagles_Phillips.png

5) How should Washington go about game-planning this matchup on both sides of the ball?

Vic Fangio will likely prioritize shutting down the Commanders’ run game in an effort to make Marcus Mariota throw the football a lot. The Eagles have stifled opposing rushing attacks more often than not but they have had two really bad games where they got bullied on the ground. Those came in losses to the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears. Both of those games were played with the Eagles on short rest (one Thursday, one Friday). The Commanders should look to see if they can bully the Birds. Might not work but worth a shot. Also, as a general rule, I would advise against Mariota throwing to whoever is being covered by Quinyon Mitchell. Adoree’ Jackson has played well recently but he’s much more gettable than Mitchell … or Cooper DeJean, who’s also great.

The Commanders’ defense should be looking to get after the Eagles’ right tackle. It looks like Lane Johnson is going to miss another start and his backup, Fred Johnson, has also missed practice time this week. If third string option Matt Pryor has to start at right tackle, well, that’s a pretty concerning development.

A companion article to this with my answers to Brandon’s questions is linked here.

Thanks again to Brandon Lee Gowton for taking time out of his day to answer our questions about the Eagles.

Washington Commanders Roster Moves: TE elevated from the practice squad

imagn-26811566.jpg

The Washington Commanders only made one move before today’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Tight end depth was thin with Zach Ertz on IR, and Colson Yankoff dealing with an ankle injury. Washington was down to John Bates and Ben Sinnott on the active roster.

Lawrence Cager was elevated from the practice squad for the first time this season. He was an undrafted free agent in 2020, and spent the last three seasons with the Giants. Cager(6’5″, 220lbs) didn’t play in a game last year, and will get an opportunity to get some snaps today if Yankoff can’t play. Washington recently signed TE Gee Scott Jr to the practice squad, but went with Cager instead this week.

The Commanders are also thin on the defensive line, but didn’t elevate a second player for depth. DT Eddie Goldman was ruled out with a concussion, and Johnny Newton popped up on the injury report yesterday with an illness. Washington will be getting some help on the DL today with DE Drake Jackson finally being cleared for contact. This will be his first game since suffering a patellar tendon injury with the 49ers in 2023.
