Teams in it at the moment and their chance of getting him:

Rangers: 75%
Yankees: 25%

This blog was written a few days ago. I will write another one for an update later.

12/08/10

Cliff Lee, the biggest free agent on the market this year, has many rumors going on about him. It has been said that Cliff has two 7 year offers on the table. I doubt that this is true. It is most likely a rumor started by Cliff’s agent. At the moment I do not think Cliff has been offered a formal offer. I do think that teams have talked to him very seriously though. I think that the two front runners are still the Rangers and Yankees. The Angels have been in talks with Lee’s agent but I do not think that they are going to be a team that actually has a chance to get him. I think that the Yankees have the best chance at getting Lee but the Rangers might just jump in there and shock people. I think that the Angels really want to go after Lee but I do not think he is interested. They may be used as a piece to drive the price up though. The Nationals I believe are the least of the teams. They just spent a bunch of their free cash on Jason Werth and I don’t think they want to create two huge contracts in the same year.
I have had this feeling in the back of my mind for the last few weeks. These talks have been far to quiet. I know Cliff doesn’t like to show all his cards but I am guessing that there is something going on behind the scenes. Is it the Rangers or is it another team we haven’t heard of? I don’t know. But I do think that the Yankees have a large chance of having one of the best left handed pitchers stolen from them for the second time this year. Here is my logic behind it.
1. I really think Cliff loves Texas. I think at first when he came here he was naturally disappointed. But the crowds that showed up to watch him play and all the nice people he met there may have changed him. Yes it is hot in Texas but Cliff is from Arkansas. The other reason he likes it here is because it is close to his family and I think that the Yankees don’t realize how much of a family man he is.
2. If Cliff Lee was going to New York I think he would have signed an offer by now. If he was telling people he wanted to be in New York the Rangers or another team would have made him a good offer by now to try to get him not to and he would have signed whatever the Yankees gave him to outbid that. I think that the wait is because he is trying to get the Rangers or another team to give him a good enough offer by seeing what the Yankees offer first. I think Cliff may be using the Yankees to get a bigger contract and I think the Yankees might know this. That would be why Cliff does not have an offer from the Yankees yet. Because they are worried that he will use the offer to get more money from someone else.
These things may be my head just thinking up ways for Cliff to get to Texas but for some reason I can’t get it out of my head. I think that this seriously could he happening and Cliff could be on his way to Texas by the end of the month.

Teams with a chance:

Yankees: 68%
Rangers: 25%
Angels: 5%
Nationals: 2%

I think he'll go to the Yankees. He will have a better chance of winning the series. All players would trade anything for that

oh my, yankees dropped down big time. I think whomever gives him the better offer will get him.

The Yankees fan spit at Cliff Lee, booed him, threw stuff at him, and everything when he beat them in the ALCS. Why on Earth would he want to go join the Yankees? Money. That's what it's all about to most players. That's why Carl Crawford is now playing for the Red Sox instead of the Tampa Bay Rays, where he belongs. I hope Cliff Lee doesn't do like Carl Crawford.

12/11/10

On Thursday morning the news came out that the Yankees had offered Cliff 7 years for around 160 million. The news coming out of the Rangers camp didn't sound good. They wouldn't say much but what they said is that they weren't going to put the team in a bad place. That night Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg, co-owner Ray Davis and assistant general manager Thad Levine went to visit Lee in his home town in Arkansas. They gave him a "menu" of offers and although none of the numbers are known exactly it is believed they gave him a 5 year deal, a 6 year deal, and a 6 year deal with another year as an option. Now at first look you may think that there is no way Cliff would even think about signing these offers but think about a few things.

1) I think Cliff would rather be in Texas
2) If the Yankees offer Cliff 160 million the Rangers only have to put up 144 million to match the offer. The reason for this is the Tax difference between Texas and New York.

At first i didn't know why Ray Davis would go on the trip but after thinking about it i have a few things. If Davis really wants to he can put up his own money to help buy Lee. If he did this it would not go into the Rangers budget and could help them A BUNCH. Also this is totally legal in Baseball because there is no salary cap.

I think that there has been a HUGE momentum swing here. I think at this point the Rangers are winning. Why would Cliff be leaving a 7 year offer on the table this long? He isn't going to get any more money from the Yanks and i don't think he will from the Rangers either. I think he is waiting for the best offer he can get from the Rangers.

Also i believe that now that the offers are in there is no way Cliff is not in Texas or New York.

Please give me your opinion guys. I really want to know what you think about this.

Pleas explain this?

The Rangers won the freakin American League this year. Their division isn't getting any better this year and they shouldn't have trouble getting to the playoffs. The Yankees have a lot of players that are not playing good defense any more as they are old aka A-fraud, Jeter, Posada. Also their division just got WAY harder with the Red Sox.

You are right but remember that a better offer doesn't necessarily mean the most money. It means the best offer for Cliff and his family

  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman tells Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger that "nothing has happened as of yet" regarding Lee's decision.
  • Sherman's colleague, George A. King III writes that the Yankees will not increase their offer to Lee again. The Yankees have extended three offers, the longest of which is believed to be in the seven-year, $160MM range.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post opines that Lee and agent Darek Braunecker have "used time expertly" to discomfort the Yankees and force them into upping their offer one last time prior to sealing the deal

Yes they are known as one but that doesn't mean that next year and for the next few years they will be good. The Rangers have a great chance of being REALLY good for the next 5-6 years.

Also yes he would be in a great rotation but the Yanks have made it obvious that he WOULD NOT be the number one starter. In Texas he would be the ace...
