San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver tore his left ACL in Thursday's team workout, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

No date for surgery has been set, but Culliver will miss the upcoming season, according to the source.

Culliver was carted off with an apparent left knee injury barely 45 minutes into Thursday's workout. He was covering a punt in a non-contact drill when he went down in pain. He held his left knee and buried his head in his hands before being taken off the field.

Coach Jim Harbaugh and players looked on as trainers attended to Culliver. General manager Trent Baalke consoled Culliver by putting his arm around the cornerback before he was carted off the field.

Culliver had 47 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble last season while playing primarily as the team's third cornerback. He was drafted in the third round out of South Carolina in 2011.

The 49ers can definitely go on without this guy, but this is bad news for a team that many have picked to win the Super Bowl this year.

49ers are still an outstanding football team. They have a lot of depth on defense, so this shouldn't hurt them too much.
