Chiefs Team Notes

Chiefs hope to develop promising WR with new reserve/future contract

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Tyquan Thornton to the practice squad in November last year after the New England Patriots waived him. The surprising release opened the opportunity for Kansas City to develop the 24-year-old for a potential role in the offense.

Last week, Kansas City made it official by re-signing Thornton to a reserve/future contract with the potential of filling a role that could be available with several free agents at the wide receiver position. He didn’t play in a regular season game with the Chiefs last season, as he remained on the practice squad. Veteran players like DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown were inserted into the active roster after returning from injury and via trade.

A 2022 second-round pick out of Baylor, Thornton clocked in at an impressive 4.28 time in the 40-yard dash at that year’s NFL combine. He never panned out with the Patriots, accumulating 13 starts in 28 games and 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns. In 2024, he only had four catches for 47 yards in six games for New England.

Sheeeeesh… Bailey Zappe to Tyquan Thornton!

Kansas City natives headline top talent to be tested at NFL combine

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to get an up-close look at some of the top college football players in the country at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana next week.

Among the players who will be working out will be several standout athletes from the Kansas City area, who might be ideal targets for the Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft in April.

Though Kansas City’s front office will be evaluating all prospects in attendance at the combine, the Chiefs are sure to be keeping a close eye on players from Western Missouri or Eastern Kansas.

Kansas City’s roster is sure to undergo a full-scale rehaul in the offseason, and the Chiefs may choose to pick a player in the draft with local ties to aid their rebuild.

Chiefs scouting report: Oregon Ducks WR Traeshon Holden

Five Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers become free agents when the new league year begins. The team needs to invest at least one selection in the 2025 NFL draft in a dynamic new pass catcher for Patrick Mahomes.

The best value picks at wide receiver in this year’s weak class fall outside the first round.

Oregon Ducks wideout Traeshon Holden is 6’1 1/2″, 203 lbs with arms that stretch beyond 32 inches. He primarily lined up out wide for the Ducks but also took more than a quarter of his snaps in the slot throughout 2023 and 2024.

He never developed into a top option in college despite originally signing with Alabama as a four-star recruit but carved out a significant role in a receiving room that included Tez Johnson and Evan Stewart.

Holden quickly releases from the line of scrimmages and makes some sharp cuts to generate immediate separation. However, he’s not twitchy and struggles to defeat press coverage when his chops miss the cornerback’s jams. His ability to generate quick separation comes and goes, but he possesses the tools to become more consistent.

Holden is a springy and explosive athlete with enough speed to stretch the field vertically. He destroys defenses over the deep middle of the field. Defenses using two-high shells need to keep an eye on him at all times. Holden overtakes and pulls away from off-man defenders, but his downfield speed is built up instead of instantaneous. This makes him vulnerable to contact early in the route.

Sheesh Traeshon Holden pic.twitter.com/XTGcFI8PYM

— Billy M (@BillyM_91) December 1, 2024

Holden’s catch radius helped him haul in 61% of his contested catch attempts over the past three seasons. He occasionally suffers from concentration drops but usually tracks the ball well. Holden lacks the elusiveness and contact balance to create after the catch. He displays good effort as a stalk blocker on the perimeter for outside runs and screens.

Holden projects as a mid or late Day 3 selection. He possesses the size and speed to create problems downfield for cornerbacks but lacks the dynamic athleticism to create separation at all three levels of the field. He would provide nice depth behind Kansas City’s preferred starting wide receivers.

Chiefs scouting report: Virginia Tech Hokies CB Dorian Strong

The Kansas City Chiefs need to examine the cornerbacks available in the 2025 NFL draft to prepare their roster for the future. Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams become free agents after the upcoming season, which creates a need for new faces in the secondary.

Virginia Tech standout Dorian Strong is 6’0 5/8″, 179 lbs. but punches above his weight in press coverage. He delivers firm one and two-handed punches to re-route receivers or force them to stall at the line of scrimmage. This provides the defense with a huge advantage, considering most NFL-caliber quarterbacks throw the ball in under three seconds.

Strong’s patient footwork helps him mirror the receiver’s release. He quickly gets into phase on the receiver’s hip and uses mid-route collision to gradually grind down routes. Strong compresses outside releases along the sideline and smothers inside releases with his physicality and tight coverage.

Virginia Tech DB Dorian Strong deserves some more love.

Quick, fluid, instinctive corner that can really run who is also competitive as a run defender. I think he shows that in Mobile next week. pic.twitter.com/uzrtB1qfSj

— Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) January 22, 2025

Strong understands leverage at a high level, which makes him an asset in man coverage. He showcases a strong understanding of his help coverage when operating in zones. Strong pinches throwing lanes to deter quarterbacks from targeting his side of the field.

Strong lacks the consistent technique to stack and shed blocks, but he occasionally wins with swipes. He quickly diagnoses and attacks wide receiver screens, either making the play or forcing the pass catcher inside toward pursuing defenders.

Strong’s arm length and lean frame present some physical limitations. His punch accuracy and power in press need to improve. Strong lacks the twitch to mirror smaller receivers, and his speed makes him vulnerable to explosive field stretchers.

Most analysts list Strong as an early fourth-round prospect. The cornerback depth in this draft class should lead to a run on corners in the fourth round. That means the Chiefs must select Strong with their second selection in the third round.
