Tyreek Hill teases potential Olympic reunion with Patrick Mahomes | KC Kingdom

In a post on X, Hill shared an emoji implying he wants to suit up for the Olympics in 2028. He’s already 31 years old and will be 34 during the Olympics, so it’s unclear whether the team would even want him, though his interest is clear.

Mahomes is, without question, the country’s top choice to play quarterback during the games. The opportunity to win a gold medal and represent the States on the largest scale is once in a lifetime, so if Mahomes wants to participate, there’s little question that he’d be the leader of the team.

If that happens, then Mahomes and Hill could be paired up once again. The duo lit the NFL on fire when Mahomes burst onto the scene, and Hill was a Pro Bowler all six years that he spent with the Kansas City Chiefs. Reunion rumors have long circulated, yet this is the best chance of it actually coming to fruition.

There’s a lot that can happen between now and 2028. Who knows, maybe Hill will even be back in a Chiefs jersey by then. Regardless, it seems fans might one day actually get to see Mahomes and Hill work together one again.

Did Chiefs vote to ban Tush Push? | Marca

Even with efforts to broaden the scope of the ban to cover all similar techniques, only 22 teams voted in favor, two short of the number needed to alter the rulebook.

According to Adam Schefter, the ten teams voted against the proposal were the Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans.

Philadelphia’s leadership, including team owner Jeffrey Lurie and recently retired center, Jason Kelce, actively lobbied fellow owners to keep the play legal. Their efforts appeared to sway enough opinions to ensure its survival.

According to ESPN, the initial vote on the proposal earlier this offseason was deadlocked at 16-16, forcing the matter to be tabled until the spring meeting before the Eagles won out.

The Packers even debuted a revised version of the proposal aimed to eliminate all forms of assistance to the ball carrier, not just at the line of scrimmage, in a bid to win the extra votes.

History says Chiefs will thrive in Week 1 | Sports Illustrated

While the NFL has a long, grueling 18 weeks of competition, starting your season off on the right foot is what every franchise wants. For Kansas City, nabbing a win overseas against a threat to the divisional crown could bode well in the long run.

The Chiefs haven’t become dominant overnight. Even before quarterback Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback for the franchise, the Chiefs had fared well in Week 1 festivities. Here is how the Chiefs have fared over the last decade when competing in Week 1 of the campaign.

2015: Chiefs 27, Texans 20 (1-0)
2016: Chiefs 33, Chargers 27 (2-0)
2017: Chiefs 42, Patriots 27 (3-0)
2018: Chiefs 38, Chargers 28 (4-0)
2019: Chiefs 40, Jaguars 26 (5-0)
2020: Chiefs 34. Texans 20 (6-0)
2021: Chiefs 33, Browns 29 (7-0)
2022: Chiefs 44, Cardinals 21 (8-0)
2023: Chiefs 20, Lions 21 (8-1)
2024: Chiefs 27, Ravens 20 (9-1)

The Chiefs haven’t lost a Week 1 combat since the 2023 season, which also marks the only blemish Mahomes has had in Week 1 games since becoming the starting quarterback in 2018. It also shows that the Chargers haven’t fared well against Kansas City to begin the season in years past.

Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay dies at 65 | ESPN

“We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon,” Colts chief operating officer Pete Ward said in a statement released by the team. “Jim’s dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed.”

Irsay is survived by his daughters Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson; his ex-wife and his daughters’ mother, Meg Coyle; and 10 grandchildren.

Irsay-Gordon, his eldest daughter, is seen as the most involved in team operations and took her father’s place during his NFL suspension in 2014 after his DWI arrest.

Lions withdraw playoff reseeding proposal | NFL.com

Detroit’s proposal was to amend the current playoff seeding format to allow wild-card teams to be seeded higher than division champions if the wild-card team has a better regular-season record. Under that format, the division champion with the best record would be seeded No. 1 and thereafter the remaining six seeds would be determined strictly by record, regardless of division finish.

Following the withdrawal, there was an extended discussion during Wednesday’s meeting among owners about the idea of the proposal. There is some support for the Lions’ proposal and the NFL will study possible reseeding scenarios for potential changes in 2026, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero and Battista reported.

Bills to be featured on ‘Hard Knocks’ training camp edition; ‘Hard Knocks: In Season’ to showcase NFC East | NFL.com

Hard Knocks is coming to Western New York.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Wednesday that the Buffalo Bills will be showcased on the 2025 version of Hard Knocks: Training Camp, HBO’s long-running documentary series, produced in conjunction with NFL Films.

Goodell added that Hard Knocks: In Season will follow the NFC East. It’s the second year that the in-season version of the show followed an entire division, with the AFC North featured last year.

Roger Goodell hints at 16-game slate ‘within five years’ | CBSSports.com

“The reason for it is, I think the potential for us to grow is there,” Goodell said at the CNBC CEO Council Summit. “This is the greatest opportunity for growth. We already have 200+ million fans here in the states, so we’re not giving up on the states. Continuing to expand here. But the international is just an open market for us. We’re introducing the game, we’re sharing our game and the fans are reacting to it in an extraordinary way. So we’re excited about our potential. Yes, I do see 16 regular-season games. I think that will happen sometime in the very near future. Within five years, probably.”

The NFL continues to experiment with its international schedule, and the Minnesota Vikings this season will be a test case of sorts when they play back-to-back games abroad. No team in league history has ever done so, but the Vikings will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns in Weeks 4 and 5 in Dublin and London, respectively.

NFL to debut new Protector of the Year award in 2025 | NFL.com

At long last, the hog mollies are getting some love.

The NFL is debuting a new award for the league’s best offensive lineman in 2025. Known as the Protector of the Year award, the honor will be decided upon by a panel that includes a number of former standout NFL linemen.

“I’m going to give credit to Dion Dawkins from Buffalo,” NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said Wednesday from the Spring League Meeting in Minnesota. “He was truly instrumental, him and Andrew Whitworth, of just making sure that we recognize the big fellas. LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, Shaun O’Hara, Orlando Pace, Will Shields and Andrew Whitworth will be the panel. ... They’ve come up with a criteria on skills, metrics, impact, leadership, durability and strength of the opponent. We’ll be tracking that quarterly with this group.”

3 years later, Pete Prisco thinks the Chiefs’ 2022 draft was even better

Kansas City Chiefs
2022 Grade:
A

The Skinny: They had 10 picks in this draft and all but one are still with the team heading into 2025, with five definite starters. They had two first-round picks, thanks to the Tyreek Hill trade with Miami, and landed corner Trent McDuffie with one of them and took edge George Karlaftis with the other. McDuffie is a top corner in the league, while Karlaftis is a good edge player. The other starters they got in the draft were safety Bryan Cook (second), linebacker Leo Chenal (third) and running back Isiah Pacheco (seventh). They also got backups in second-round receiver Skyy Moore and corners Joshua Williams (fourth), Jaylen Watson (seventh) and Nazeeh Johnson (seventh). All three corners have started games for the Chiefs and will compete for a job this year. They killed this draft.

How I did: I loved the picks of Karlaftis and McDuffie, but didn’t like the Chenal pick. I was wrong about Chenal. I also liked the Moore and Cook picks, although Moore hasn’t worked out.

New Grade: A+

Bill Barnwell isn’t sold on the Chiefs’ changes to the offensive line

Detroit Lions v Kansas City Chiefs

In a new analysis, the ESPN analyst gives an unfavorable view of Kansas City’s biggest offseason moves.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell took a senior class yearbook approach to one of the NFL’s conferences, summarizing the offseason of every AFC team with a superlative. Most of them were pretty negative — and his thoughts about the Kansas City Chiefs were no exception.

Kansas City Chiefs
The superlative:
Most likely to slide their pass protection to the left

For the second time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs lost a Super Bowl in which their offensive line was overwhelmed by the opposing pass rush. General manager Brett Veach responded to that first defeat by rebuilding the line with future standouts. He traded draft picks to acquire left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., signed top Patriots guard Joe Thuney and drafted future stars in center Creed Humphrey and guard Trey Smith in 2021. Those four became the core of a great line that helped Kansas City make it to the past three Super Bowls.

It’s no surprise Veach reinvested in the offensive line this offseason, but the Chiefs’ moves are a little more controversial this time around. After franchise-tagging Smith, he traded Thuney to the Bears, getting a fourth-round pick for a player who was a first-team All-Pro in 2024, albeit a 32-year-old who is a year away from free agency. Thuney was overmatched in the Super Bowl at left tackle, but he’s still an excellent, reliable guard.

The additions are hardly sure things, especially for 2025. At left tackle, the Chiefs signed lineman Jaylon Moore — who mostly served as Trent Williams’ backup and has only 12 career starts — to a deal guaranteeing $21.2 million. There’s nothing wrong with sitting behind a future Hall of Famer, but that’s a lot of money for an inexperienced, unproven tackle, especially one who is expected to be protecting Mahomes’ blindside in Week 1. Andy Reid has earned some benefit of the doubt with offensive line evaluation, but defenses were able to overload Moore’s plate at times last season. I would expect them to test Moore’s ability to deal with duals and unexpected rushers early in 2025.

Read Barnwell’s complete view on the Chiefs here.

My take

Essentially, Barnwell is choosing to view all of Kansas City’s offensive line adjustments in the worst possible light — and that’s OK. We must be prepared for the possibility that Veach has blown his most important offseason project. But is it fair to characterize these moves as “a little more controversial” than those made in 2021?

Of the four moves Veach made on the offensive line that year, only Thuney’s signing was a sure thing — and even then, the Chiefs’ GM was criticized for overpaying the longtime New England Patriots guard.

While Brown had spent most of the previous season playing left tackle in place of the injured Ronnie Stanley, it was in the Baltimore Ravens’ run-based offense; no one was entirely sure he’d do well in the Kansas City offense.

To be sure, Humphrey was a well-regarded second-round pick — but he was still going to be starting as a rookie. And although Smith has proven to be a top-flight guard, the medical issues that made him fall to the draft’s sixth round justified plenty of skepticism about his acquisition.

So while Barnwell’s suspicion about Veach’s 2025 moves isn’t inappropriate, it’s not that far removed from what fans felt four years ago; it’s only with the benefit of hindsight that the 2021 rebuild looks so good.

It’s true: Moore has only a small number of NFL starts — fewer than Brown when he came to Kansas City. But Brown had roughly the same number as Moore at the position he would play. And the Chiefs should be more comfortable with the former San Francisco 49ers’ tackle adjusting to the system than fans ever were with Brown.

And, it’s true: Simmons might not be ready to play until 2026. If that’s how it plays out (and as long as Moore is an effective stopgap), the $21.2 million the Chiefs have promised him will be a bargain. It will be a lot if he ends up being a swing tackle, but considering that the team has lost two league championship games largely because of issues on the offensive line, is that something fans should worry about?

That brings us to Suamataia. It’s reasonable to be concerned about his ability to play as an NFL guard; he didn’t inspire much confidence playing outside during his rookie season. Yet every year, we see college tackles with no NFL experience successfully transition to guard. Isn’t it possible that Suamataia could make the adjustments that many other players have made in his second year? And if he can’t, the Chiefs have other players who can step in.

Barnwell is right: there are reasons to be worried about Kansas City’s offensive line. But it’s not like the Chiefs haven’t been here before.

FanDuel Sportsbook, the official sportsbook partner of SB Nation.

Chiefs’ fan confidence

It looks like fans’ memory of Kansas City’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX is fading away. Nearly all Chiefs fans currently approve of the team’s direction.

How long will Brett Veach remain in place?

An overwhelming similar number of Kansas City fans believe the team’s GM will remain in place for at least five years — but fewer than two in five think the 47-year-old Veach will remain in place for more than 10 years.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas games

When Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around, it looks like NFL fans from around the country won’t see the Chiefs’ games as the main attraction.

The game in Brazil

But by a substantial margin, NFL fans think the Week 1 matchup between the Chiefs and Chargers at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo will be a good one.

Arrowheadlines: Patrick Mahomes now the world’s 18th highest-paid athlete

Kansas City Current v Portland Thorns

Chiefs headlines for Saturday, May 24.

The latest

Off-field earnings push Patrick Mahomes into top 20 of world’s highest-paid athletes | The Star

The San Francisco 49ers last week gave quarterback Brock Purdy a huge five-year contract extension worth $265 million, and many people were talking about .... the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes.

Yep, Over The Cap said Mahomes has the 14th-highest average salary per year among NFL quarterbacks.

The good news for Mahomes is he is still being paid handsomely by the Chiefs, and he’s also making a lot of money away from the field. Those endorsement deals are a big reason why Mahomes is ranked as the 18th highest-paid athlete in the world by Forbes.

Predicting the Best Rookie on Every Team in 2025 | Sports Illustrated

Kansas City Chiefs: Omarr Norman-Lott, DT

It’ll be interesting to see how the Chiefs’ left tackle situation unfolds, as first-round pick Josh Simmons, who’s still rehabbing from a torn patellar tendon sustained in October, competes with free agent signing Jaylon Moore for the starting job. Norman-Lott faces no such questions. The Tennessee product is a potent interior pass rusher. With Chris Jones commanding extra attention next to him, Norman-Lott will have plenty of advantageous opportunities to disrupt opposing quarterbacks.

Chiefs rookie LB Jeffrey Bassa describes collegiate position change | Chiefs Wire

A highly viewed four-star recruit in the class of 2021, Bassa took a unique path to finding his current role. He entered college primarily playing safety before kicking down to linebacker to cover for injured teammates. Bassa never returned to safety, but he retained most of the athletic traits that made him a coveted defensive back.

While at the Senior Bowl earlier this year, Bassa detailed his experience transitioning from safety to off-ball linebacker.

“It was great. You’re so used to guarding receivers all the time … You get transitioned into the box, and you’re dealing with linemen all the time. You’re dealing with vision of the quarterback, dealing with the linemen and assigning everybody to make sure they’re alright,” said Bassa. “I thought it was a quick and easy transition for me because I always wanted to have that vocal voice and for people to depend on me to get them aligned right. [I can] also do things that a DB can do and stop the run as well.”

Top extension candidate for every NFL team | CBS Sports

Kansas City Chiefs: QB Patrick Mahomes

Back in 2020, Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed to a 10-year, $447 million contract that could be worth up to $503 million. While that deal — which has Mahomes connected to Kansas City through the 2031 season — has been tweaked in recent years to give the Chiefs some cap flexibility, the quarterback market has changed rather dramatically. That could mean that they take a harder look at this deal to bring Mahomes up to a respective level. At the moment, Mahomes is making $45 million per season, which has him tied with Kirk Cousins (currently a backup) as the 14th highest-paid quarterback in the league. With Josh Allen recently reworking his deal to get him to $55 million per season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mahomes and the Chiefs follow suit.

Chiefs have kept C.J. Hanson on ice for a year and there’s a reason for it | Arrowhead Addict

It’s be easy to forget what made the Chiefs look Hanson’s way in the first place, which is understandable, but it all starts with that RAS—his Relative Athetic Score—a metric designed by Kent Lee Platte that takes into account a player’s height, weight, bench press, leaping drills, speed drills, and more. The result is a number measured up to 10.0.

Back to Hanson. Platte’s RAS for Hanson measured out to 9.84, which is basically otherworldly for an offensive lineman. Per Platte, it ranks at No. 26 overall among a group of 1,582 linemen from the mid-’80s to 2024. Yeah, that’s impressive.

Of course, NFL Draft history is littered with busts who were excellent at the Combine or at their respective Pro Days yet never turned in anything meaningful on the field. That said, Hanson is made of the sort of uber-athletic clay that coaches look forward to molding.

Beyond the raw athleticism, Hanson also entered the draft with an impressive amount of experience and reliability. While at Holy Cross, he’d started 38 games at right guard over three seasons and was named First-Team All-Patriot League in his final two seasons as a Crusader. He was also a team captain, and that leadership speaks volumes about the kind of person he will be for the Chiefs.

Around the NFL

The NFL and College Football Fight for the Calendar Is Brewing | Sports Illustrated

The NFL’s actions also speak loudly on Saturday when the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 allows the league to start airing games on college football’s typical place in the week starting after the second weekend of December. While in the past this hasn’t been a big deal, it is nowadays with a 12-game college football slate during the regular season with a conference championship weekend tacked on and an expanded playoff that now has four rounds worth of action.

When the CFP initially put out dates for its inaugural 12-team tournament, there was hope among some in college football circles that the NFL would opt to avoid going head-to-head with the three first-round games on Dec. 20, 2024. The league instead scheduled two marquee games—featuring the Kansas City Chiefs against the Houston Texans plus the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers—and put both on over-the-air networks to help bolster their reach even further.

Projecting performances of quarterbacks who changed teams in offseason | NFL.com

Geno Smith - Las Vegas Raiders
2025 numbers will be: BETTER

With the Seahawks electing to get younger and — slightly — cheaper at quarterback, Smith reunites with Pete Carroll, under whom he earned the only two Pro Bowl nods of his career.

Smith didn’t get enough credit for keeping the Seahawks offense afloat behind a porous offensive line. The interceptions, particularly in the red zone, were rough, but most quarterbacks become ineffective when battered as much as Smith was last year.

When stating that I expect better numbers from Smith, I don’t think he’ll pass for another career high in yardage, as I’m anticipating the Raiders to be more balanced. However, I do expect Smith’s efficiency numbers to improve. His -.02 EPA per dropback should improve while he cuts down on the backbreaking INTs. And the 53.8 QBR from 2024 should get back into the 60s, where it was when he was with Carroll.

I am interested in the fit with Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. A once-ballyhooed coach when he entered the NFL in 2013, Kelly created nary a buzz after returning to the pro game. Whereas once there were debates about Kelly and his style, now it’s mostly a shrug. How will his system mesh with Smith’s ability to assess at the line of scrimmage and make pre-snap reads?

The weaponry surrounding Smith is a fascinating collection. Tight end Brock Bowers is a No. 1 target. First-round running back Ashton Jeanty should make his life easier. The WR crew has some questions, but Jakobi Meyers is underrated and second-round pick Jack Bech brings a physical style. If Smith is protected better than he was last year, he can dramatically improve a Raiders offense that has been stuck in the mud for the past two years.

Aaron Rodgers drops massive hint he will sign with Pittsburgh Steelers | Penn Live

Free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers dropped the latest hint that he will sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rodgers traveled to Austin, Texas, over the weekend to join his friend and artist, Mike Stud, also known as mike. During the event, Rodgers held a Q&A with the crowd.

At one point, a girl asks him if he would ever play for the Chicago Bears, and Rodgers’ answer is another hint that he will eventually suit up for the Steelers.

“No,” Rodgers answered the question. “But I believe there is a team that might play in Chicago this year, a road trip to Chicago. I love Chicago, though, way more than they love me. It’s been a great relationship all one way.”

Bill Barnwell isn’t sold on the Chiefs’ changes to the offensive line

It’s true: Jalon Moore has only a small number of NFL starts — fewer than Orlando Brown Jr. when he came to Kansas City. But Brown had roughly the same number as Moore at the position he would play. And the Chiefs should be more comfortable with the former San Francisco 49ers’ tackle adjusting to the system than fans ever were with Brown.

And, it’s true: Josh Simmons might not be ready to play until 2026. It will be a lot if he ends up being a swing tackle, but considering that the team has lost two league championship games largely because of issues on the offensive line, is that something fans should worry about?

That brings us to Kingsley Suamataia.

3 other teams picked as ‘more complete’ than the Chiefs in 2025

Denver Broncos v Kansas City Chiefs

According to an NFL writer, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Detroit will have more talent in the coming season.

On Wednesday, NFL.com draft analyst Eric Edholm published a ranking of the league’s “most complete teams” for 2025. He listed the Kansas City Chiefs fourth, following the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

They continue to tinker with their wide receivers and offensive line. There will be new faces on defense, too. But the core of the 2025 Chiefs resembles the team that has forged its way into playing in five of the past six Super Bowls. They might be coming off a lopsided loss in Super Bowl LIX, but I don’t expect them to undergo a precipitous decline.

Kansas City’s defense had carried a bigger chunk of the load in recent years, but the Super Bowl LIX blowout proved the unit required reinforcements. Four draft picks, including three on Day 2, should help with depth. DT Chris Jones and CB Trent McDuffie are elite defenders, and the Chiefs also have solid to strong playmakers throughout the defense. New CBs Kristian Fulton and Nohl Williams should help.

Patrick Mahomes’ production has slipped a bit from his absolute peak a few years back, but he remains one of the most dangerous QBs in the game entering his age-30 season. Back along his side is Travis Kelce, a better running back situation than the team had last season and plenty of talent at receiver. Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Marquise Brown and rookie Jalen Royals all can be weapons. The offensive line has undergone big changes, but it could be better in 2025.

Some shakiness in the trenches keeps us from giving them an A across the board on the report card, but Mahomes and a handful of other elite players, combined with solid middle-of-the-roster talent, makes this crew a top-10 lock in my book. Drop them after the Super Bowl blowout at your own risk; there’s enough left in the tank for another run.

My take

By now, we’re accustomed to the idea that in every offseason, there will be a perception that other teams have improved more than Kansas City — and that in the coming season, one of them will rise to the top of the league.

And in any season, that could happen.

But in this case, Edholm doesn’t go quite that far. While he lists the Chiefs fourth behind three other talented teams, he still considers Mahomes “one of the most dangerous QBs in the game.”

There’s a good reason for this. Going into the 2022 season, Edholm’s predecessor Marc Ross ranked the Chiefs fourth after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers (!) and Buffalo Bills, noting that Kansas City would now be without wideout Tyreek Hill. A year later, Edholm listed the Chiefs second behind the Eagles. Then in 2024, he put them at third behind the San Francisco 49ers and the Ravens.

In all three seasons, the Chiefs made the Super Bowl — and won it twice. So while Edholm might have legitimate grounds to say other teams are more complete, he recognizes that Mahomes “and a handful of elite players” can make the difference.

He made the same point a year ago, starting by calling Mahomes “the best player in the world.”

Patrick Mahomes’ brilliance can overcome some of the shortcomings of a roster, as we’ve seen during back-to-back Super Bowl championships. Last season was more stark, with the Chiefs’ receivers threatening to destroy the whole operation. But even with Rashee Rice’s offseason legal troubles leading to questions about his status for the 2024 campaign, the additions of veteran Marquise Brown and first-rounder Xavier Worthy help stabilize the group and provide more vertical speed.

With Mahomes having all three of these wideouts back for 2025 — along with significant moves elsewhere — Edholm is right: Kansas City will certainly have enough left in the tank.

The Chiefs have proven they can beat any other team. But like any other squad, Kansas City can be derailed by injuries — and sometimes be its own worst enemy. There is, however, no reason to think it cannot contend again.

Let’s talk about everyone’s weekend plans!

Last weekend, the Savannah Bananas — a baseball team that puts on a show similar to the Harlem Globetrotters — had two sold-out performances at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. Terri and I were among 37,000 who were there on Friday night — and after seeing our first Bananas game, we highly recommend the experience. Were you among those lucky enough to get tickets? What did you think? Have you seen them in other cities?

Let’s talk about our journeys to Bananaland!

Chiefs OTA observations from Thursday’s Day 3

NFL: AUG 14 Chiefs Training Camp

Everything that went down during Kansas City’s third organized team activity session of 2025.

On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs conducted their third organized team activity (OTA) session of the 2025 season at their practice facility on the grounds of the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City.

This was the first OTA practice open to the media. There will be seven more: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, followed by four more in the following week. Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media — starting with an overcast (but comfortable) day.

It was a nice overcast day at the #Chiefs facility for Day 3 of OTAs. This marked media members' first opportunity to watch voluntary practices this offseason.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

As always at these voluntary practices, there were some no-shows.

We didn't spot six players at the voluntary workout: wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice, tight end Travis Kelce and offensive linemen Ethan Driskell, Jawaan Taylor and Trey Smith.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

Head coach Andy Reid offered some details.

After the practice, head coach Andy Reid applauded the attendance of the first few days, noting that a couple of players were out sick, including Rice. Patrick Mahomes reported Rice already looks like his old self after the injury. More on that here: https://t.co/VxkPVtp8Ql

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

Three other players were not full participants in Thursday’s practice.

CB Kristian Fulton and OL Josh Simmons were around but limited, and TE Jared Wiley attended the practice without a helmet. The #Chiefs have been impressed with Simmons and believe he may even be a full participant in mandatory minicamp. Those dates are June 17-19.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

A rookie caught Pete’s eye in the early going.

Alright, to the field.

The offense started a little slow in the initial team period, with LB Nick Bolton breaking up a Mahomes pass intended for WR JuJu Smith-Schuster. Rookie DT Omarr Norman-Lott looked like he would have had a sack in a full go.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

DE George Karlaftis on the additions of rookie DL Ashton Gillotte and Norman-Lott: “I think those guys, they’re young, they’re eager, they want to learn, they’re humble — all things you want to see in rookies and young guys. We’re gonna help them out."

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

A late addition to last season’s practice squad got some work...

Next was a 7-on-7 period, which saw WR Tyquan Thornton catch 2 quick passes. Thornton, a former 2nd-round pick, was among the offensive standouts on Thursday. Felt like he was everywhere.

LB Leo Chenal 'broke up' a pass sticking with TE Noah Gray. The ball hit him in the back.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

...as did a player who hopes to do more than return kicks in 2025.

In the same period, WR Nikko Remigio high-pointed a pass from QB Gardner Minshew, who threaded the ball just past a defender. Remigio held onto the ball as he fell to his back. An athletic play for the roster hopeful.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

Then it was on to the red zone.

In the RZ portion of 7-on-7, Mahomes threw touchdown passes to rookie WR Jalen Royals and Gray. I thought CB Jaylen Watson showed good coverage going up against WR Jason Brownlee, and CB Jacobe Covington broke up a pass from QB Bailey Zappe.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

The team’s star cornerback made a big play.

In the next 11-on-11 period, Mahomes started with a completion to Smith-Schuster before the defensive play of the day. Mahomes scrambled to his left and attempted his token flip, only for CB Trent McDuffie to make a diving interception.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

There were excellent offensive plays from an experienced veteran — and a second-year player, too.

The offensive play(s) of the day were two plays apart. RB Kareem Hunt brought in a pass in the flat with one hand as his momentum carried him down the right sideline. A play later, WR Xavier Worthy caught a pass one-handed across the middle.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

Worthy (a man of few words) on the play: “Oh man, Pat just threw the ball. Just reflexes.”

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

The exciting rookie wideout got in on the action.

Mahomes finished his day with a goal-line touchdown to Royals.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) May 29, 2025

It was all in a day’s work for the two-time MVP.

Mahomes 11-on-11 targets on the day: Moore (2), Remigio (2), Thornton (2), Gray, Hunt, Royals, Smith-Schuster, Worthy

Nikko Remigio

After spending his rookie season on Kansas City’s Reserve/Injured list — and most of his second season on the practice squad — the former Fresno State wide receiver finally got on the field for the Chiefs in December, returning 44 kicks for almost 400 yards. This season, however, he’ll be facing tough competition from hungry rookies like Jalen Royals and Brashard Smith. Still, a majority of Kansas City fans believe he’ll hang on to the job he earned in 2024.

Matt Araiza

A much larger percentage, however, believe the Chiefs’ punter will hold on to his job after a challenge from former USC punter Eddie Czaplicki.

Isiah Pacheco bulking up for bounce-back season: ‘He looks tremendous’

Kansas City Chiefs OTAs

After injuries last year, the Kansas City running back wants to add more weight ahead of his pivotal fourth NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is approaching this offseason with a different mindset. While some players focus on slimming down to stay quick and lean, Pacheco is doing the opposite: adding weight to better withstand the physical toll of NFL seasons.

“Just going through injuries, I wanted to gain weight and be a little heavier,” Pacheco told reporters on Thursday. “To surpass and get better — and build off of this past year on the field.”

Last season, the fourth-year back fractured his fibula in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals, missing nine games on the team’s Reserve/Injured list. While he eventually returned, he admitted he never quite felt like himself — something he attributes to losing his ideal playing weight during his rehab.

Pacheco, who is currently listed at 216 pounds on the Chiefs’ official website, didn’t want to reveal a specific target weight. But his added bulk hasn’t gone unnoticed by head coach Andy Reid.

“Physically, he looks real good,” Reid said. “He’s put on a couple pounds of good weight. He’d gotten himself down there a little bit last year and leaned up, but I think he looks tremendous right now.”

This offseason marks the first in Pacheco’s young career that he isn’t preparing to defend a Super Bowl title. That alone has served as fuel to work on his body — especially after returning home to his roots.

“I use it as a big motivation for me,” Pacheco explained. “I’m from Jersey, so I went back home and worked out at the gym where I started at the YMCA. I started reminiscing. You’ve got people from New Jersey wearing Eagles hats all the time. They’ll question me like, ‘Wow, you’re in here. We got you all this year.’ So that right there only motivates you to go harder.”

Now entering the season healthy, stronger, and mentally locked in, Pacheco is aiming to reestablish himself as a vital piece of Kansas City’s offense.

“I feel great,” Pacheco said. “I’ll say my mental toughness is good and my physical toughness is awesome. I’m just happy.”

A year later: Looking back at the Chiefs’ trades

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Taking another look at Kansas City’s 2024 trade history.

As the Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2024 season aiming to win their third consecutive Super Bowl, they made a series of trades to reinforce their roster.

Let’s revisit these moves, examining their impact on the season.

L’Jarius Sneed: a cornerstone lost

The offseason spotlight shone brightly on star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was coming off a stellar 2023 campaign. Known for his versatility and lockdown coverage — allowing no touchdowns during the regular season — Sneed played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run. He even delivered a game-changing forced fumble in the AFC Championship against the Baltimore Ravens.

Despite his value, the Chiefs faced a tough financial decision. Sneed was franchise-tagged on February 28, guaranteeing him a $19.8 million salary that would threaten Kansas City’s already tight cap space. With Sneed’s age (27) and rising demands, the Chiefs opted to trade him to the Tennessee Titans on March 22. The deal sent Sneed and a seventh-round pick to Tennessee in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick. The Titans promptly signed him to a four-year, $76.4 million contract.

While the move was risky, the Chiefs’ faith in Trent McDuffie and their young secondary paid off; despite Sneed’s absence, the defense remained stout. Meanwhile, Sneed’s season in Tennessee was derailed by injury; he landed on the Titans’ Reserve/Injured list in November with a quad issue. He finished with 23 tackles and no interceptions. In hindsight, the Chiefs navigated the trade well, saving cap space and securing valuable draft capital while maintaining defensive integrity.

Cameron Thomas: A short-lived experiment

In late August, Kansas City sought to bolster its pass rush by acquiring defensive end Cameron Thomas from the Arizona Cardinals for a seventh-round pick. Thomas, a former third-round selection from San Diego State, was viewed as a developmental project under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Unfortunately, Thomas made just five appearances, logging only six snaps on defense and failing to register a tackle. He was waived in November, rendering the trade a misfire.

Peyton Hendershot: Depth that didn’t deliver

On final cutdown day, the Chiefs traded a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for tight end Peyton Hendershot, who was known as a solid blocker. Initially released after limited action, Hendershot returned to the practice squad — and was promoted back to the roster following rookie Jared Wiley’s season-ending injury.

Hendershot also missed time with an injury, ultimately appearing in only seven games, collecting five catches for 51 yards. While Kansas City gave up little, it gained even less — making this trade inconsequential at best.

DeAndre Hopkins: A missed opportunity

The Chiefs’ receiving corps suffered early setbacks with Hollywood Brown’s preseason shoulder injury and Rashee Rice’s season-ending knee injury in Week 4. To address this, Kansas City traded with the Titans to get three-time All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins on October 23, parting with a conditional fourth-round pick.

Though the move promised fireworks, Hopkins struggled to find his rhythm in Kansas City. Over 10 games, he posted 41 catches for 437 yards and four touchdowns. As the season progressed, his role diminished — and the Chiefs showed little interest in re-signing him after the season. Despite the initial excitement, this trade ultimately fell flat.

Josh Uche: The rotation that never was

Seeking to reinforce their pass rush amid injuries to Mike Danna and Charles Omenihu, the Chiefs traded a 2026 sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots for linebacker Josh Uche. A former second-round pick, Uche seemed poised to contribute, but his integration into the rotation never materialized. He appeared in just five games and was a healthy scratch throughout December, leaving many puzzled by his limited use.

The bottom line

The Chiefs’ 2024 trades reflected a mix of savvy financial strategy and calculated risks:

  • L’Jarius Sneed’s trade ultimately benefited the Chiefs, preserving cap flexibility and enabling them to weather defensive injuries, though his absence was felt.
  • Cameron Thomas and Peyton Hendershot’s acquisitions failed to deliver meaningful contributions.
  • DeAndre Hopkins brought promise but little production, falling short of expectations.
  • Josh Uche’s trade was a low-cost gamble that didn’t pay off.

While not all its moves yielded immediate dividends, Kansas City’s front office demonstrated a willingness to strike a balance between short-term needs and long-term sustainability. Its efforts paid off, as Kansas City made yet another appearance in the Super Bowl.
