Omarion Hamtpon, Chargers RB room ranked just inside top 16

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers Offseason Workout

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The Chargers added a blue-chip running back prospect and a 4-time 1,000-yard rusher to their backfield but they still barely cracked the top half of NFL

The Chargers revamped their entire running back room last offseason, adding four new players that all played elsewhere the previous season. The group was headlined by former Ravens J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards and rounded out with rookie sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal and veteran Hassan Haskins.

Fast-forward one year later and the Chargers once again reshaped the top of their backfield by signing former Steelers back Najee Harris and drafting North Carolina standout Omarion Hampton. Harris should be seen as a refreshing dose of consistency (four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to begin career) for the Bolts as they haven’t had a rusher hit that mark since Melvin Gordon in 2017.

As for Hampton, he was a two-time 1,500-yard, 15-touchdown back for the Tar Heels who received back-to-back All-American honors to end his collegiate career. With all this in mind, it’s tough not to think that streak of rushers falling short of the 1,000-yard threshold will finally come to an end this season.

However, what if I told you that the Chargers backfield, with all of its new additions and potential, barely made it in the top 16 of a new set rankings by Pro Football Focus? Posted on Wednesday, analyst Dalton Wasserman went about ranking all 32 running back rooms in the league and the Bolts somehow landed at No. 15. That was one spot behind the Commanders (and former back Austin Ekeler) and one spot above Jonathan Taylor and the Colts.

“Similar to the division rival Las Vegas Raiders, Chargers running backs struggled to produce last season, so they turned to what they hope will be more reliable options,” says Wasserman.

“First-round pick Omarion Hampton is the headliner, earning a 90.5 PFF rushing grade and racking up the second-most yards after contact in the FBS, behind Ashton Jeanty, over the past two seasons. Free-agent acquisition Najee Harris has never been the most efficient player, but he earned a career-high 77.2 PFF overall grade last season.”

I’m not going to lie here, I think it’s a bit ridiculous to put the Chargers this low, especially when the Raiders are ranked several spots higher solely because of Asthon Jeanty’s pedigree. The rest of that room is not great. Veteran Raheem Mostert, Sincere McCormick, and Zamir White make up the rest of their room. The issue here is that PFF does go strictly by their grades and because Harris and his 1,000-yard season in 2024 came with a less-than-stellar grade, it all of a sudden doesn’t mean as much.

I’m pretty sure if you’d ask anybody else if the Raiders or Chargers running back room was better entering this season, they’d say Los Angeles. But, I digress.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I’m so excited to see 2025 Najee Harris
I think we may be in for a huge surprise this year

The NFL announced this summer’s joint practices and the Chargers will host just one with the crosstown Rams.

On Wednesday afternoon, the NFL announced all 24 joint practices that will take place between NFL teams during the month of August. For the Chargers, they will host just one joint practice in El Segundo at The Bolt when they welcome the Rams on August 13.

The first joint practices of the offseason will take place on August 5 wen the Ravens host the Colts and the Cowboys host the Rams, which also happens to take place on the West Coast in Oxnard, California.

The Chargers are hosting the Rams the week prior to their August 16 matchup in Week 2 of the preseason. That will actually be the Chargers’ third exhibition this offseason since they will face the Lions in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game to kickoff the preseason on July 31.

Los Angeles will also face the Saints and 49ers this preseason with the former coming on August 10 and the latter taking place on August 23.

Chargers catch a stray in new bold prediction about the AFC West

Los Angeles Chargers Mandatory Minicamp

The Chargers finished second in the AFC West in 2024, but an NFL.com analyst believes it’s the Broncos who will win the divisional crown this year over the Chiefs.

Like both the Raiders and the Broncos, the Chargers have spent the offseason making proactive and calculated moves to gain some form of ground and attempt to put an end to the Chiefs and their stranglehold on the division.

I don’t think it’s crazy to say that every team behind the Chiefs got better in some way, shape, or form in the past four months, but it remains to be seen which team exactly has propelled themselves the closest to Kansas City.

In a recent article from NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha, the analyst listed a number of very bold predictions for this upcoming season and one of those centered on a team finally upsetting Kansas City en route to taking the divisonal crown from them for the first time 2015.

However, to the dismay of everyone here, Chadiha did NOT pick the Chargers. In his expert opinion, it’s the Broncos that he believes are built best to win the AFC West crown in 2025.

“The Chiefs have reigned over the division since 2016 and they’ve barely been challenged during most of the years that quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been under center,” says Chadiha. “Most of that success comes down to the Chiefs’ greatness but they’ve also been helped plenty by the ineptitude of the teams sharing the AFC West with them. Kansas City has been led by future Hall of Fame coach Andy Reid during that entire run of dominance. Every other team in the division has had at least four different head coaches within that same stretch. That churn appears to have slowed, though, with Pete Carroll (Raiders), Jim Harbaugh (Chargers) and Sean Payton (Broncos) now working in the AFC West.”

We can only hope the immense amount of coaching talent in the division shakes things up, right? Several years ago it felt like every AFC West team was loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, but it actually ended up being another underwhelming year for everyone aside from Kansas City. Makes you think twice about buying the hype this year again.

In the end, it’s Payton’s pedigree as a Super Bowl-winning coach and his team’s elite defense that leads Chadiha to believe this is Denver’s time to shine for the first time since they went to Super Bowl 50.

“Of those three coaches — all of whom have either reached or won the Super Bowl — Payton is sitting on the most impressive team aside from the Chiefs. The Broncos have an elite defense, and it looks like they landed a franchise quarterback in Bo Nix in last year’s draft. We know Payton can coach up the offense, especially as the Broncos add more playmakers. We’ve also seen how Denver gave Kansas City fits last season in Arrowhead, with a blocked field goal keeping them from securing an impressive upset. Denver is good enough to win this division now. With the other teams also creating more resistance to the Chiefs — who went 5-1 in the AFC West after resting their starters in a Week 18 loss to the Broncos — Denver will earn its first crown since Peyton Manning was their quarterback.”

The Chargers have finished second in the division four times since the 2015 season and have finished third or fourth five times. Unfortunately, history tells us the Chargers are more than likely to be in the bottom half of the division than the runner-up and/or challenger to the Chiefs, but eight of those nine previous seasons did not have Harbaugh as the coach. The floor seems higher than it’s ever been, but you simply cannot discount the rest of the division and how they’ve improved, specifically the Broncos whom have only continued to lean into their identity.

But so have the Chargers. And all of this is wishful thinking and what-ifs until the season actually arrives, but it’s hard not to feel slighted in some way, especially after being the most recent team to finish second to Kansas City in the division.

Will the Broncos really end up leapfrogging the Chargers this year? I sure hope not.

Chargers are set to face relentless 2025 home schedule

Mexico v Dominican Republic - Gold Cup 2025

Photo by Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images

The combined 2024 win-loss record for the Chargers’ home opponents this season is vastly greater than their road opponents.

The Chargers were able to capitalize on one of the league’s easiest schedules in 2024 en route to winning 11 games in Jim Harbaugh’s first season as head coach while also punching their ticket to the postseason.

Unfortunately, the downside of being able to take advantage of a soft schedule one year is that the following year is likely not going to be nearly as easy. Without digging any deeper than the team names on the schedule, the Chargers are going to be in for a tough time. The reigning champion Eagles are coming to Sofi Stadium, along with the Vikings, Texans, Commanders, and Steelers.

The strength of schedule for every team this season! pic.twitter.com/u87JLKfhy4

— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) May 15, 2025

In fact, the home schedule for the Chargers is LIGHTYEARS more difficult than their road gauntlet. To see just how tough their home/away splits are, I went ahead and added up the 2024 records for every team on their schedule to show just how big the discrepancy is.

Just check this out.

Home Opponents

  • Chiefs (15-2)
  • Raiders (4-13)
  • Broncos (10-7)
  • Commanders (12-5)
  • Colts (8-9)
  • Vikings (14-3)
  • Steelers (10-7)
  • Eagles (14-3)
  • Texans (10-7)

Total win-loss record at home: 97-56

Away Opponents

  • Chiefs (15-2)
  • Raiders (4-13)
  • Broncos (10-7)
  • Giants (4-13)
  • Dolphins (8-9)
  • Titans (3-14)
  • Jaguars (4-13)
  • Cowboys (7-10)

Total win-loss record on the road: 54-82

To put it into a number, the win percentage from 2024 of teams the Chargers will face at home is 63 percent. Contrast that to their road opponent’s combined win-loss percentage and you get 39.7 percent. That’s one heck of a difference.

Any NFL team who wants to be one of the best in the league wants to, and should, take care of business when opposing teams come into their house. If you’re not good at home, it likely means you’re not going to have a good year in general.

Whether or not you believe the Chargers go better this offseason, this upcoming season is going to be difficult. I don’t think that reality can be challenged. If everyone thought year one with Harbaugh was going to show how just good this coaching staff is, year two should end up doing that two times over.

4 Chargers land in new Top 100 players for 2025 by CBS Sports.

Los Angeles Chargers Mandatory Minicamp

Justin Herbert, Ladd McConkey, Rashawn Slater headline the Chargers who made CBS Sports’ list of the top 100 players in the NFL this season.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports recently dropped his top 100 players in the NFL for the upcoming 2025 season and the Chargers managed to land four players on the list.

Let’s go ahead and dive in to see who made the cut.

38.) OT Rashawn Slater

“The former top 10 pick is a rock on the left side of the Chargers line. He excels in pass protection for Justin Herbert, but he’s also powerful in the run game.”

Slater made his first Pro Bowl since his rookie season and looked to be back as one of the league’s best offensive tackles. He helped keep Justin Herbert clean all season, helping his quarterback to throw just three interceptions in 17 regular season games. With another year in Greg Roman’s system, I’ll be looking to see if Slater can take another step in unleashing this Chargers run game behind a new duo of backs.

49.) QB Justin Herbert

“In his first season under Jim Harbaugh, Herbert threw for 3,870 yards with 28 touchdown passes and just three picks. Over the final four games, he threw nine touchdown passes. He’s another who needs to win in the playoffs.”

Herbert authored his cleanest season of football in 2024 by throwing just three picks. Forget the playoff game. Doesn’t matter. Herbert may have unlocked a new level to his career with a strong play-action game that should only get better in 2025.

Add in the fact the team added back old friend Mike Williams and drafted a pair of tall, athletic pass catchers (Tre Harris and Oronde Gadsden) and you’ve got what could be a surprising passing attack, as well

Look, if Roman was able to get Lamar Jackson an MVP trophy, I’d like to think he could do the same for Herbert.

93.) WR Ladd McConkey

“As a rookie, McConkey caught 82 passes for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 14.0 per catch and should be even better in 2025. He also had nine catches for 179 yards and a touchdown in his team’s playoff loss.”

McConkey makes what may be his debut on any sort of Top 100 list right here at No. 93. The rookie set the franchise rookie records for both receptions and receiving yards, on top of the postseason single-game receiving yards mark by a rookie.

McConkey was lightning in a bottle for the Chargers offense in his first season but the team still sorely needed help elsewhere as carrying an offense as a rookie is never the ideal situation. Expect even bigger things from McConkey in 2025 now that the team has more weapons ready to roll alongside him in year two.

95.) S Derwin James Jr.

“James was back to playing at a high level in 2024 after a disappointing 2023 season. He was used more near the line of scrimmage, which plays to his strengths. He is not a player who can just sit in center field and dominate.”

Hard to believe a Second-Team All-Pro would fall this far down the list but that’s just what happened to a James after he earned the honor in 2024 as a slot defender. I’m not. big fan of Prisco seemingly flagging James for what he deems as an inability to play deep safety. I don’t think that’s the case at all. He’s just THAT good at what he does around the line of scrimmage. I don’t know how he fell all the way down here, but mistakes were made.

Los Angeles Chargers All Quarter Century Team: Wide Receiver No. 1

NFL: Green Bay Packers at San Diego Chargers

Christopher Hanewinckel-Imagn Images

We’re kicking off the journey to the Chargers Quarter-Century Team by voting on the team’s WR1 since 2000.

The first poll to decide the top Chargers wide receiver for the franchise’s All Quarter Century Team was a landslide victory for Keenan Allen who garnered over 90 percent of the vote. Now with the team’s WR1 out of the way, let’s figure out who will join him as the second receiver on the team.

Go ahead and drop into the poll below and come back in 48 hours to see who made the cut!

Malcom Floyd (2004-2015)

Floyd’s career with the Chargers started as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Wyoming in 2004. While he never got over the 1,000-yard threshold in any one season, his consistency as WR2/3 for the team never went underappreciated. In 12 years with the Chargers, Floyd amassed 5,550 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns. He recorded at least 700 receiving yards five times and hit five or more receiving scores four times before retiring in 2015.

Mike Williams (2017-2023)

Williams was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft following a year where Allen missed all but one half of a single game with a torn ACL. After a slow start to his career via injuries, Williams broke out in year two with 11 total touchdowns in 2018. He then went on to record his first 1,000-yard season in 2019 where he averaged a whopping 20.4 yards per reception. Before being released prior to the 2024 season (and signed back again this offseason), Williams recorded 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Vincent Jackson (2005-2011)

The two-time Pro Bowler for the Chargers joined the team as a second-round pick in 2005. At 6’4 and 241 pounds, Jackson was an athletic freak the way he could stride down the field with 4.50 speed despite being the size of a tight end. After recording a little over 1,100 yards in his first three seasons, Jackson broke out in 2008 with 1,098 yards, notching the first of his three 1,000-yard seasons with the Chargers. Before his time with the Bolts came to an end, he was named to two Pro Bowls and racked up 4,754 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Los Angeles Chargers All Quarter Century Team: Offensive Guard No. 1

NFL: Preseason-Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers

Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESS

We’re kicking off the journey to the Chargers Quarter-Century Team by voting on the team’s WR1 since 2000.

The Chargers were blessed with some very talented and blue-collard offensive lineman during those mid to late 2000s. From one side to the other, that front office built themselves a winner made out of high draft picks, late picks, free agency finds, and even an undrafted free agent.

Below are three of the best offensive guards the Chargers employed this turn of the century and unfortunately only two of them will make the cut for the Quarter Century Team.

Let’s go ahead and find out who the first one is!

Kris Dielman (2003-2011)

Dielman began his time with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Indiana who had most recently been playing defensive tackle. He parlayed that humble NFL beginning into becoming a two-time Second-Team All-Pro, four-time Pro Bowler, and being named to the Chargers 50th Anniversary Team.

By the end of his career, he had started 97 games and played in 120 total for the Bolts. Just like many of the offensive linemen who will be up for the Quarter Century Team, Dielman was part of the record-breaking seasons by LaDainian Tomlinson in the late 2000s.

Mike Goff (2004-2008)

Goff did not start his career with the Chargers but he sure had his best years as a professional with in San Diego. After six years with the Bengals, Goff joined the Bolts in 2004 and quickly became an impactful veteran presence.

In his first year, he started at right guard between center Nick Hardwick and right tackle Shane Olivia, both of whom were rookies. In 2005, he was named a First-Team All-Pro by Sports Illustrated.

In all, Goff started all 16 games in each of his five seasons with the Chargers.

Louis Vasquez (2009-2012)

The Chargers selected Vasquez in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He won the starting right guard job as a rookie and never looked back, holding it down through his entire tenure with the team.

While he was with the Chargers, Vasquez started every game he played in, totaling 54 with 10 missed to injuries. He would go on to become an All-Pro for the Broncos in 2013 and help them win Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers.

Los Angeles Chargers All Quarter Century Team: Offensive Tackle No. 2

NFL: San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos

Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

After Rashawn Slater was named the best Chargers offensive tackle this century, who will join him as OT2?

When I posted the poll for OT1, I actually wasn’t all that confident in who would end up taking the spot. Rashawn Slater ended up winning the poll with 53 percent of the vote, but Marcus McNeill was second with 41. In my head, I wouldn’t have been surprised if McNeill had won simply because of the success the team had during his tenure. Plus, I know how rose-colored glasses work in regards to those years.

Still, Slater is our OT1 of the All Quarter Century Team which means the majority of you believe we are living in the prime of blindside protection this century. That’s pretty cool!

But without further ado, let’s go ahead and find our OT2!

Marcus McNeill (2006-2011)

McNeill was a second-round pick for the Chargers out of Auburn back in 2006. He started immediately at left tackle and played a key role in helping LaDainian Tomlinson set the all-time single-season touchdown record. Despite being a lineman, McNeill finished fourth in the AP Rookie of the Year running.

He was a fixture on the blindside for the majority of his tenure with the Chargers before injuries took a toll on him during the 2011 campaign. He would end up retiring after that season.

Jeromey Clary (2007-2013)

The Chargers found a gem in Clary as a sixth-round pick out of Kansas State. He ended up going from day three pick to starting 93 games for the Chargers over his seven-year career, missing only nine games total during that span. He started 15 games in 2013, helping the Chargers to the postseason, and a postseason win over the Bengals, in his final season with the team.

Shane Olivea (2004-2007)

Another late-round find by the Chargers, Olivea was drafted in the seventh round after winning a national championship with Ohio State. He started immediately, earning nods in 31 of his first 32 games with the Bolts. In 2004, he was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. He played four solid years for the Chargers before being released in 2008.

Chargers just outside Top 10 ranked NFL teams by Mina Kimes, Ryan Clark

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Chargers

Mina Kimes and Ryan Clark gave their NFL team rankings, and the Los Angeles Chargers fell just outside the Top 10.

After free agency, the NFL Draft, and all team activities, the offseason has arrived. A lengthy break between now and training camp, and with it comes rankings, speculation, optimism and pessimism. Most recently, it’s a ranking of all 32 NFL teams from ESPN’s Mina Kimes and Ryan Clark on “The Mina Kimes Show.” The two discussed their ranking of each team, and the Los Angeles Chargers fell to No. 11, as Kimes and Clark debated between the Denver Broncos and Chargers for the spot.

“I went with the Chargers [over the Broncos], actually,” Clark said. “I am unapologetically a big Jim Harbaugh fan. I think in short spurts, I think he is incredibly, incredibly good at doing his job. And now, you look at Najee [Harris] and Omarion Hampton in the backfield – I think this puts Najee where he needs to be. You’re not going to ask him to be the lead guy. Omarion Hampton, I thought was just extremely explosive at North Carolina. He had vision, he had contact balance, he had the explosiveness to reel off the big run, which we know that’s not what Najee does. And you think about what they were able to do last year with Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins in the backfield.”

Last season, the Chargers ranked No. 17 in rushing, averaging 110.7 yards per game with former Baltimore Ravens duo J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. The struggles of the run game, according to the data, suggest some of the struggles were on the running backs. Last season, the Chargers were No. 13 in run-block win-rate but No. 27 in RBYBC/rush. The blocking is there but faults from the ballcarriers limited their production. With Harris and Hampton, expectations are they improve the ground game.

Clark also took into account wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who was just named to the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2025, entering his second season and anticipates he ascends to Pro Bowl worthy play.

“What I love was the amount of times [Ladd McConkey] beat man-to-man coverage in the intermediate to deep part of the field,” Clark said. “With route-running, with acceleration out of breaks; I know he takes that next step this year. And this is a dude that is going to play Pro Bowl caliber ball.”

Couple thoughts while pulling some Ladd McConkey clips...

1. He was COOKING guys in man coverage all year. 4th league-wide in yds/route run.

2. Absolutely has what it takes to be a 3-level threat. pic.twitter.com/hSG2aG2L9E

Los Angeles Chargers All Quarter Century Team: Offensive Guard No. 2

San Diego Chargers vs Oakland Raiders - September 11, 2006

Kris Dielman was named the OG1 for our Chargers All Quarter Century Team. Who will end up joining him as OG2?

In emphatic fashion, you all voted for Kris Dielman to be the first offensive guard selected to the Chargers All Quarter Century Team. Dielman earned 90 percent of the vote with the other two players receiving the remaining 10 nearly split down the middle.

With OG1 now out of the way, let’s go back to the poll and figure out who will join him as OG2!
