Chargers re-sign OL Trevor Penning to 1-year deal

Just before the trade deadline this past season, the Chargers traded for Saints offensive tackle/guard Trevor Penning, sending back a late day-three pick in 2027. Penning never quite found his footing as a starter for the Chargers but he provided value as the team’s swing tackle in heavy personnel packages.

That little bit of impact he had on the running game was seemingly enough to earn him another contract with the Chargers. Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Bolts are inking a new one-year, $4.5 million deal with Penning to keep him in Los Angeles for another year.

Penning is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2022 out of the University of Northern Iowa. He started out as a tackle for New Orleans but was transitioned to guard during the 2024 season. He played left guard prior to being traded and saw time at both left tackle and right guard for the Chargers in the latter half of the season.

The Chargers need to reinforce their depth along with their starting lineup for 2026 and this is just one of those moves to make sure that there’s familiarity among the second- and third-stringers.

Browns sign former Chargers OG Zion Johnson to 3-year deal

The Chargers will now be in the market for two new offensive guards this offseason.

Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, former Bolts left guard Zion Johnson has reached an agreement on a three-year, $49.5 million deal with the Cleveland Browns. Johnson has been with the Chargers the past three seasons, playing both left and right guard for the team since being drafted in the first round of the 2022 draft (Boston College).

The Chargers made their first move towards revamping their offensive line by signing center Tyler Biadasz who was recently released by the Commanders. After filling the pivot spot, the Bolts will now look to find their new left and right guards, whether that’s in free agency, the NFL Draft, or both.

General manager Joe Hortiz continues to stay conservative with his spending and Johnson being allowed to walk at that price likely gives us an idea on how much he’s willing to spend on a starter. Knowing that Johnson was going to be near the top of this free agent class, he’ll now likely pivot to a cheaper veteran for one of the vacancies while filling the other via the draft.

Cowboys signing former Chargers DT Otito Ogbonnia

Another Chargers free agent has found a new home.

Per NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Cowboys are signing former Chargers defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia to a one-year, $3 million deal. Ogbonnia was the Bolts’ fifth-round pick out of UCLA in 2022. He started 20 games across four years while playing in 42 total contests.

While with the Chargers, Ogbonnia played mainly in a rotational role where he recorded 82 total tackles, four tackles for loss, and a half sack.

With Ogbonnia now signing elsewhere, the Chargers’ defensive line room now consists of just Teair Tart, Jamaree Caldwell, Justin Eboigbe, and Scott Matlock. With that shallow of a group, expect the Chargers to target the position in the middle rounds of the draft, on top of either re-signing Da’Shawn Hand or finding a new veteran to add to the group.

Chargers re-sign OL Trey Pipkins

The Los Angeles Chargers are bringing back some depth for their offensive line.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Chargers are signing offensive lineman Trey Pipkins to a two-year deal worth $10 million. The contract will give Pipkins the opportunity to earn up to $2 million in bonuses.

Pipkins, who turns 30 in September, has been with the Chargers since he was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. This will be his eighth season with the team, and he has started at least 10 games in each of the last four seasons. He was a full-time starter from 2022-24, but he came off the bench in three games for the Chargers this past season.

Considering the fact that Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are both coming off of big injuries, it is important for the Chargers to get a player that can fill in for them on a moment’s notice. Pipkins played that role last season, and he will continue to do so for the Chargers in 2026.

Chargers re-sign special teams ace Del’Shawn Phillips

The Chargers continue to bring back some of their depth pieces as they’ve agreed to a new two-year deal with linebacker and special-teamer Del’Shawn Phillips. The deal is for $7.5 million but can increase to $10.5 million with incentives.

Phillips led the NFL in special teams tackles in his first year with the Chargers and he was rewarded with a nod to the All-Pro Second Team.

The 6’2, 230-pounder started one game for the Chargers in 2025 and recorded a career-high 37 tackles to go with one tackle for loss, one sack, and a fumble recovery. After playing in all 17 games, the Chargers most certainly wanted to retain one of their biggest contributors in the third phase of the game. It also helped that Phillips played well in the final two games of the season when he was asked to fill in for both injured starters and when they were benched for the regular season finale.

With the start of the new league year beginning this afternoon, the Chargers went ahead and announced all of their recent moves, including one signing that was not announced ahead of time.

Per the Chargers, they officially re-signed linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips and cornerback Deane Leonard, but they also announced that long snapper Josh Harris and the team have come to an agreement on a new contract to keep the veteran in Los Angeles.

All three players were integral in keeping the Chargers special teams unit afloat during the 2025 season, especially following a pair of moves that got rid of notable special-teamers Caleb Murphy and Ja’Sir Taylor.\

Phillips turned into one of the best in the league as he finished the season with the most special teams tackles in the NFL en route to earning Second-Team All-Pro honors.

Leonard has gone from seventh-round pick to the team’s top gunner on kick coverages. Chargers fans know very well how a bad unit can hurt the overall success of the team’s season so this move is very much a-okay in our book.

Lastly, Harris battled a surprisingly long injury during the 2025 season but he’s just a few years removed from being an All-Pro and remains one of the best in the league at his position.
