Mike McDaniel called off Bills interview in Florida

gettyimages-2245863820.jpg

The Mike McDaniel situation continues with another chapter.

On Saturday morning, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that Mike McDaniel called off his meeting with the Bills in Florida on Friday and he’s officially withdrawn his name from Buffalo’s head coach search. At the same time, Russini notes that McDaniel is still in the running for the Raiders head coach job as of now.

Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel now has withdrawn from the head coach searches in both Buffalo and Cleveland. https://t.co/IToVtklOtJ

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 24, 2026

Earlier this week, it was reported by numerous insiders that the former head coach of the Dolphins was expected to become the Chargers’ next offensive coordinator. However, the Bolts have yet to make the move official with any sort of announcement. As things stand, McDaniel has taken his name out of the searches for both the Buffalo and Cleveland jobs.

Where that currently leaves him is seemingly between the Las Vegas gig and calling the offense for the Chargers. McDaniel could very well be using the Raiders job as leverage to earn a better pay day with the Bolts and I personally think that is the case. Taking over one of the worst franchises in the NFL as opposed to taking a year off head coach duties to coach one of the league’s best quarterbacks sounds like a no brainer before pursuing his next head coach job in 2027.

At the end of the day, nothing is for certain until they put ink to paper. Let’s just hope that happens sooner than later for the Chargers and McDaniel.

Chargers interview Rams’ Aubrey Pleasant for DC position

gettyimages-2166542698.jpg

On Saturday morning, the Chargers announced they have completed an interview with Rams assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant for their defensive coordinator vacancy. Pleasant has been with the Rams since 2023 and previously spent a four-year stint in LA coaching cornerbacks. Both Rams stints sandwich a two-year stretch where Pleasant coached defensive backs for the Lions (2021-2022) and was a offensive consultant for the Packers (2022).

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 24, 2026

Pleasant played collegiately for the University of Wisconsin from 2005-2009. He went undrafted before immediately starting his career in coaching at Grand Blanc High School in Michigan. From 2011-2012, he was a graduate assistant and assistant defensive backs coach at Michigan.

During the past two preseasons, Pleasant was given the chance to act as the Rams head coach in a game against the Chargers. Pleasant went 2-0 in those games, winning 13-9 in 2024 and 23-22 in 2025.

This past season, the Rams finished with the 20th-ranked passing defense, allowing 223.1 yards through the air per game. The prior year, they ranked 19th and allowed an average of 216.7 passing yards per game.

Philip Rivers pulls out of Bills HC search

gettyimages-2253055981.jpg

On Monday morning, multiple NFL insiders reported that former Chargers quarterback Phillips Rivers has pulled out of consideration for the Bills’ head coach search after interviewing with the team this past week. Rivers came out of retirement this season to join the Colts and help them make a late playoff push, the Indy went 0-3 in Weeks 15-17 leading to their elimination before the end of the regular season.

Philip Rivers has withdrawn from the #Bills’ coaching search, as @DMRussini reported. NFL head coaching might very well be in his future, just not right now. Sounds like he enjoyed the process with Buffalo but now isn’t the right time for him and his family. pic.twitter.com/9zgNk5IuZh

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 26, 2026

Since retiring following the 2020 season, Rivers has been the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama where he has coached his son Gunner into one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects. Gunner will enter his senior season at St. Michael later this year and it’s likely Rivers looks to move up in the coaching ladder following his move to college.

Rivers likely took the chance to interview for a head coach gig to gain experience for the future, not with the full intention of potentially leading a franchise with zero college or professional coaching on his resume. Even at 44 years old, Rivers still had more than enough to compete in the modern NFL. It’s highly unlikely he ever steps on the field again in pads, but the wealth of knowledge and experience he could bring to any team, including a fiery competitive spirit, would be special, even for a NFL franchise.

Chargers sign DT Teair Tart to 3-year extension

gettyimages-2256272902.jpg

On Monday, just hours after the Chargers announced the official hiring of Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator, the team announced another signing with one of their best defenders from the 2025 season.

Per ESPN’s Kris Rhim, the Chargers are inking defensive tackle Teair Tart to a three-year deal worth up to $37.5 million. That would only make Tart the 30th-highest paid defensive tackle in the league, putting him just behind D.J. Jones of the Broncos and Grover Stewart of the Colts.

Deal is 3 years up to $37.5 million, source says https://t.co/jGJn4fyuw5

— Kris Rhim (@krisrhim1) January 26, 2026

Tart played in all 17 games for the Chargers in his first season as a starter. It was also his first year he started every game of a regular season and he did it all while being one of the most consistent and impactful players for the Bolts. He recorded 32 total tackles, four tackles for loss, four pass deflections, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery during the regular season before adding a sack, two tackles for loss, and a pass deflection against the Patriots in the wild card round.

The veteran ended the year with a 67.9 overall season grade by Pro Football Focus, good for second best of his career when he’s played at least 400 snaps in a season. His run defense grade of 73.3 was the best mark of his career and his 21 stops — constituting a failed play by the offense — were also the second-highest total of any season in his career.

Chargers defensive lineman earns praise from analyst

gettyimages-2256272883.jpg

The Los Angeles Chargers had one of the best defenses in the NFL this past season as Jesse Minter led the group to the number five overall unit in the league.

Minter became the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, but there are still a number of players that could stand out for the team that are still on the roster. One of those players is defensive lineman Teair Tart, who was named the unsung hero of the Chargers by NFL.com analyst Kevin Patra.

“Tart brought the beef to the Chargers’ stingy defense. The sixth-year pro led the Chargers with 12 run stuffs, and his 5.3% run-stuff rate was the sixth best among all defensive linemen in 2025, per NGS. With swift but powerful moves, the 315-pounder muddled the middle of offensive lines, taking on double-teams against the run and pushing the pocket in passing situations,” Patra wrote.

“He generated 18 total pressures and a sack from his defensive tackle position, per PFF (including playoffs), and he helped key a run defense that finished fourth in the NFL in the regular season in EPA per called rush (-0.16). Little wonder that the Bolts wanted to keep him around; per a Monday report from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the team agreed to terms with Tart on a three-year, $37.5 million extension.”

Tart should be with the Chargers for the next three seasons. His contributions have clearly been noticed by the front office. He is expected to be a key part of the Chargers defense moving forward, and the team will need him if it wants to maintain the success that it had in 2025.

BFTB community, what do you think of Tart’s extension and how does it affect the Chargers moving forward? Chime off in the comments section below with your thoughts.

Chargers interview trio of in-house names for defensive coordinator

gettyimages-2191187773.jpg

On Monday, the Chargers announced on Monday that they had completed a trio of interviews with in-house coaches for their defensive coordinator opening. They were outside linebackers/edge rushers coach Dylan Roney, safeties coach Adam Fuller, and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale.

we’ve completed an interview with Steve Clinkscale for defensive coordinator pic.twitter.com/70Axoq0xF3

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 27, 2026

Roney finished his second season with the Chargers after following Jim Harbaugh out to Los Angeles from the University of Michigan. From 2021-2023, Roney was a graduate assistant for the Wolverines, mainly helping on the defensive side of the ball with game planning and day-to-day operations.

The 2025 season was Fuller’s first coaching at the NFL level. The former defensive coordinator for Florida State had a strong year coaching Derwin James and the rest of the safety room that featured standout performances from veteran Tony Jefferson and rookie R.J. Mickens. James was also named a Second-Team All-Pro for the second consecutive season.

Clinckscale has been seen by many as the most ready and preferred choice to replace Jesse Minter should the Chargers choose to roll with an in-house name. The veteran coach cut his teeth at the college level for 23 years before joining Harbaugh’s staff in 2024. Under Clonkscale, the defense has finished top 10 in both passing yards allowed and interception rate while allowed just 40 touchdowns to 34 picks over that span. The latter two numbers are good for third best in the league from 2024-2025.

Chargers make it official with new OC Mike McDaniel

gettyimages-2253221015.jpg

The Chargers have finally made it official with their own unique announcement regarding their new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

After about a week since the initial reports that the Bolts were expected to hire McDaniel to replace Greg Roman, the social media team dropped a snippet from a video with McDaniel wearing the powder blue and gold while being instructed how the “introduction video” will be shot. At the end, McDaniel introduces himself as the offensive coordinator for the Chargers.

Minutes later, the social team dropped a more familiar post announcing the hire:

The Chargers have now filled one of their two coordinator openings for the 2026 season. The next step, at least on the offensive side, is to find their next offensive line coach. As of now, the number priority in that area for the Chargers should be going after former Falcons OL coach Dwayne Ledford who is widely

With the hire, one thing we can do now is turn towards pending Dolphins free agents and see what players make sense, if at all, for the Chargers to target later this year.

For the first time since Kellen Moore, Chargers fans can now be fully and apologetically excited about the guy calling plays for Justin Herbert.

Chargers hire Western Michigan DC Chris O’leary as new defensive coordinator

Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-9.18.09%E2%80%AFAM.png

On Wednesday afternoon, just hours after his interview with the team, the Chargers announced they are hiring former safeties coach and Western Michigan defensive coordinator to call their defense for 2026 and beyond.

O’Leary was hired by Jim Harbaugh to his initial staff in 2024 and quickly made waves in his first season with LA. Following the trade for safety Elijah Molden, O’Leary was tasked with getting him up to speed on short notice, eventually leading to a standout season that earned Molden a three-year extension with the Bolts. He also oversaw the rebound of safety Derwin James who earned his first of two back-to-back Second-Team All-Pro honors under O’Leary in 2024.

As the defensive coordinator for Western Michigan, his unit ended the year ranked ninth at the FBS level in points allowed per game at 17.4. The Broncos also finished 19th in total defense (305.5) after ending the prior season before his hiring ranked 108th.

O’Leary spent six seasons before his first Chargers stint at Notre Dame where he helped coach players such as Kyle Hamilton, Xavier Watts, and current Bolts cornerback Cam Hart.

Following the announcement of his hire, current Chargers defenders Daiyan Henley, Tony Jefferson, and Molden all went on social media to express their excitement for their new defensive coordinator.

Bucky Brooks gives Chargers a tried-and-true pass rusher in new ‘26 mock

gettyimages-2256606491.jpg

Following the Ravens hiring former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to be their next head coach, the chances of the Chargers re-signing edge rusher Odafe Oweh took a big hit. Despite Oweh telling reporters after the season that he hoped to stay in L.A., it’s hard not to think the Ravens won’t make a push to bring back their former player after the standout year he had.

There now is a worst-case scenario where veteran Khalil Mack chooses to retire or play elsewhere in hopes of chasing a Super Bowl trophy one last time, coupled with Oweh not returning to the Bolts. This means the defense could be down two of their top pass rushers from this past season, leaving them with Tuli Tuipulotu, an aging Bud Dupree, and 2024 fourth-rounder Kyle Kennard as their top three.

That’s not a great place to be with other big needs topping the offseason to-do list, but it’s nonetheless a reality.

It’s with all of this in mind that NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks has the Chargers selecting Miami edge rusher Akheem Mesidor with the 22nd-overall pick in his Mock Draft 1.0.

“The energetic pass rusher would make the perfect replacement for Khalil Mack, who is staring at both free agency and potential retirement. As a power rusher with outstanding instincts, Mesidor would complement Pro Bowler Tuli Tuipulotu on the edges.“

If Akheem Mesidor was three years younger he’d be a top 15 pick.

This is my favorite rep pic.twitter.com/CWDiBO4vBD

— Omari (@OmariiBrown) January 23, 2026

The biggest downside to Mesidor is going to be his age. He turns 25 in early April and will be halfway to 26 by the time he plays his first snap in the NFL. This also means he will be dang near 30 when his rookie contract is up. Is that worth a first-round pick? I honestly do not think so. A player like him on day two? Sure thing. The premium position he plays still means something, but the age 30 threshold will be here (if you subscribe to that line of thought with NFL players) early in just his second contract. That’s not good for him personally (it will limit how long the deal is) and won’t be good for teams (who may be risking too much on a player already at this stage of his career).

But what do you all think? Would you select Mesidor in the first round? Yay or nay? Let us know all of your thoughts below!

Chargers hiring former Dolphins OL coach Butch Barry

gettyimages-2179438264.jpg

On Wednesday morning, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported that the Chargers are set to hire former Dolphins offensive line coach Butch Barry to the same position. Barry has been the offensive line coach under Mike McDaniel each of the past three seasons and it looks like the latter believes that continuity will serve the Bolts well up front.

— Cameron Wolfe (@CameronWolfe) January 28, 2026

During the 2025 season, the Dolphins spent the third-lowest amount of money on their offensive line room but finished the year tied for fourth in rushing yards per attempt as a team at 4.70. They ranked 13th in rushing yards per game which is impressive given that they had a terrible passing game to help balance the offense (25th).

In 2023, the Dolphins boasted the league’s top passing offense (265.5) while also ranking sixth in rushing (135.8). Veteran Raheem Mostert ran for over 1,000 yards that season while scoring 18 times on the ground. Then-rookie De’Von Achane also rushed for 800 yards and eight scores on just 103 carries, good for a robust average of 7.8 yards per carry.

This past season, Barry helped develop center Aaron Brewer — a former UDFA out of Texas State — into one of the top players at his position in all of the NFL. Brewer finished the 2025 season with an 87.4 overall season grade by Pro Football Focus, including a 91.5 in run blocking. As a pass protector, Brewer allowed just one sack and 12 total pressures in 17 starts.

Since the event is taking place out in LA, two NFL players with ties to the city will be participating in this year’s NBA All-Star Celebrity in former USC and current Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen.

The news was first broke by NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Some of the other announced participants in the game are NBA insider Shams Charania, Los Angeles music producer Mustard, and Memphis rapper GloRilla. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts has also been tabbed to be one of the coaches for the event.

Other notable NFL players who have participated in the Celebrity game in recent years have been Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons and Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. Chargers have difficult Odafe Oweh decision coming

The Los Angeles Chargers are at a crossroads when it comes to pass rusher Odafe Oweh.

Oweh was acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens in the middle of the season and the team could look to keep him on board for 2026 and beyond. However, he is hitting free agency this offseason and could have other teams interested in his services.

“The Chargers traded for Oweh, a first-round pick in 2021 who had struggled for four seasons in Baltimore, and turned him into one of the league’s most productive edge rushers. Oweh had 7.5 sacks in 12 games with the Chargers after having zero before they traded for him,” ESPN insider Kris Rhim wrote.

“His best game came in the postseason, when he had three sacks and two forced fumbles in the Chargers’ 16-3 playoff loss to the Patriots, setting the single-game postseason franchise record for sacks. At 27, Oweh will be one of the most promising edge rushers available, and the Chargers will likely have to spend to keep him in L.A. For what it’s worth, Oweh said after the season that he wants to remain in L.A.”

The Chargers also have Khalil Mack hitting free agency, so they need to retain at least one of the two to have a top-tier pass rusher on the roster. It won’t be easy keeping either of them, but that has to be one of the top priorities for the Chargers during the offseason.

BFTB community, what do you think of the possibility of keeping Oweh for 2026? Should the Chargers keep him or let him walk? Chime off in the comments section below.

Chargers trio lands amongst NFL’s top 50 pending free agents

The Chargers will have a ton of money to spend this offseason as their potential to reach over $100 million in cap space is high with just a few smart cuts to current contracts. Now that seems like a lot to work with — and it is — but the Bolts also have some in-house names to keep an eye on who will likely garner a decent amount of attention.

Let’s go ahead and check where they landed in ESPN’s top-50 free agent rankings by analyst Matt Bowen.

9.) EDGE Odafe Oweh

What he brings: An explosive pass rusher who gets off the ball in a hurry, Oweh can also flatten his path to maneuver around offensive tackles. After getting traded from the Ravens on Oct. 7, Oweh had 7.5 sacks and 27 pressures in Los Angeles. Plus, he recorded three sacks in the team’s wild-card loss to the Patriots.

Oweh exploded with the Chargers in a way no one had seen from him since he was drafted by the Ravens several years ago. Going from zero sacks in five games with Baltimore to start the year to 10.5 sacks in 13 games (including the wild card round) is a heck of a jump and all that shows is Oweh just needed the right staff and scheme to maximize his strengths.

Now that he’s shown that potential, Oweh will have suitors. He plays a premium position as is still fairly young. It sure seemed like Oweh was set on returning to LA this offseason, but after Jesse Minter took the head coach job with the Ravens, there’s now a chance he gets whisked away by his former defensive coordinator.

22.) EDGE Khalil Mack

What he brings: An elbow injury forced Mack to miss five games early in the season, yet he finished with 5.5 sacks and 28 pressures. He will need to be used more as a situational rusher at this stage of his career, but he is still a powerful defender who can create impact plays off the edge.

After notching a career high 17 sacks in 2023, Mack has combined to record just 11.5 sacks over the past two seasons for the Chargers (missed five games in ’25 with injury). While that may seem like the veteran has finally dropped off, Mack has still been one of the best players at the position when it comes to the overall role of modern day edge rushers.

Per Pro Football Focus, Mack was the highest-graded defensive player for the Chargers this past year, earning an 83.0 To give more perspective, Mack had ended both the 2024 and 2023 seasons with overall grades over 90.0. So yes, in a way the numbers show he has regressed, but everyone in that locker room and knows how valuable he remains nonetheeless.

Mack is still chasing his first playoff win and that hasn’t come to fruition as a member of the Chargers the past four seasons. Will that lead him to look elsewhere in 2026? It very well could, especially given Minter’s move to Baltimore.

33.) OG Zion Johnson

What he brings: A young and durable interior blocker with movement traits, Johnson fits in both zone and gap run schemes. He is just entering his prime playing years, with a 90.7% pass block win rate over his four-year career.

Per PFF, Johnson is coming off his worst year as a pro with a 57.4 overall season grade. Still, Johnson’s best ability is availability as he’s played over 1,000 snaps in four consecutive seasons. If you step back PFF’s grading system, however, you’ll see a young lineman coming off a campaign where he set career-best marks with pressures (26) and sacks (3) allowed .

At only 26 years old, Johnson’s best ball can still be in front of him. He’s been working diligently with offensive line guru Duke Manyweather over the last year and that training has seemingly help based on his numbers alone.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Chargers retain him as a cheap starter while looking to upgrade center and right guard this offseason.

Could Chargers trade for Tyreek Hill?

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to improve their team this offseason, and they can do so in a number of different ways.

The team could benefit from adding a vertical threat on offense for Justin Herbert to throw to. That’s part of the reason why CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan listed the Chargers as a potential landing spot for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill if he were to be traded.

“As we noted, Hill almost certainly will require a new deal with whichever team he’s traded to, which could alter the price tag. While he has no guaranteed money remaining on his deal, Hill currently has a bloated $29.9 million base salary and a $51.1 million cap hit, so there will need to be some sort of adjustment,” Sullivan wrote.

“Further diluting his value, the veteran is set to enter his age-32 season and is coming off a 2025 season where he was limited to four games due to a gruesome left knee injury that included a torn ACL he suffered in Week 4. Teams will need to get a good prognosis on Hill’s recovery before trading for him, so a deal revolving around him would likely need to feature conditional draft pick compensation linked to playing time/production. If he’s able to come close to his former self, however, he’s a dynamic weapon.”

Hill, who turns 32 next month, comes as a flight risk given his off-field conduct, but as a player on the gridiron, he is still potentially one of the elite wideouts in the NFL.

Hill played just four games this season, grabbing 21 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown, before tearing his ACL in Week 4. He is expected to be ready in time for the upcoming season, and the Chargers might be able to get him on a discount if they were to make a trade.

It might only cost the Chargers a day three pick to get Hill on board, and if that is the case, the Chargers should truly consider the idea of trading for him.

BFTB community, what are your thoughts on the possibility of trading for Hill? Chime off in the comments section below.

Chargers linked to Tyler Linderbaum in free agency

The Los Angeles Chargers are in need of improving their interior offensive line and free agency this offseason.

The team could also look to improve in the draft, but given the fact that they are a playoff contender, going through free agency is a must. That’s part of the reason why Pro Football Focus writer Bradley Locker suggested that the team should pursue Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum in free agency.

“The fact that the Chargers made the playoffs with the NFL’s worst offensive line by overall PFF grade is borderline miraculous. Natural reinforcements will come via the returns of Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, but the unit also needs an upheaval up the middle. Spending on Linderbaum is a prudent idea,” Locker wrote.

“Linderbaum has posted a 74.6 overall PFF grade or better in each of his four pro campaigns, and he’s allowed only two sacks over the last three seasons. Indeed, the former first-round pick is the second-most-valuable center since his debut, according to PFF’s Wins Above Replacement metric. Los Angeles holds the most available cap space going into free agency, and Linderbaum is an ideal candidate for a market-resetting deal.“

Linderbaum has been with the Ravens for the first four seasons of his career, and the former first-round pick out of Iowa could be looking for a new home, especially after head coach John Harbaugh was let go at the end of the season.

The Ravens will likely put in an offer to try and bring him back to Baltimore. The New York Giants could also be interested as it is Harbaugh’s new team. There’s also reason to believe his brother Jim might be interested in acquiring him as well.

Adding Linderbaum would shore up the interior part of the offensive line. If Slater and Alt can return to form and get healthy, Los Angeles’ biggest weakness may become one of its biggest strengths next season.

Chargers land 2 massive trench players in new 2026 mock draft

A Jim Harbaugh team wants to be characterized by their size, strength, and physical nature. That was on display in regards to the team’s defense in 2025 but the offense fell woefully short after losing their best two offensive lineman and the ones who stayed healthy (comparatively) underperforming didn’t help, either.

In a new two-round mock draft by ESPN’s Matt Miller, he has the Chargers doubling up on trench players — both of whom own tremendous size — in order to help reinforce that Harbaugh style of football.

With the 22nd-overall pick, Miller has the Chargers selecting Senior Bowl standout Caleb Banks, a monolithic defensive tackle who stands at 6’6 and 339 pounds.

“The run on edge rushers before this pick leaves the Chargers with some interesting decisions. Do they add to an offensive line that was marred by injury in 2025 or try to fix a D-line that still needs a true anchor to help defend the run? With the talent that’s left on the board, Banks would be very enticing as the nose tackle Los Angeles is missing. The 6-foot-6 339-pounder is an aggressive bull rusher with rare first-step quickness for his size. Think Vita Vea, but with better length. Banks missed all but two games last season due to a foot injury, but his Senior Bowl performance was well-received by scouts, who saw the explosive play in the trenches that excited them entering the 2025 season.”

Banks would be a heck of a third player to add to the nucleus already consisting of 2024 third-rounder Jamaree Caldwell and the recently-extened Teair Tart. Both Tart and Caldwell are more run-stuffers than pass rushers, so Banks would fit in nicely as a complementary skillset to round out the room.

As for the team’s second-round pick, Miller has the Bolts using No. 55 on Oregon offensive guard Emmanuel Pregnon, one of the top players along the offensive line that makes it this far down thanks to a lack of position value.

“Injuries decimated the Chargers’ offensive line in 2025, highlighting the lack of overall depth and long-term answers on the interior,” says Miller. “Pregnon would be a plug-and-play starter at either guard spot.”

Pregnon has had a lengthy college career that took him from Wyoming, to USC, and finally to Oregon for his sixth and final year of eligibility. He’s been an impact player everywhere he’s been, which is only supported by the fact he kept transferring up to the better and better program.

To cap his career off, Pregnon earned First-Team All-Big Ten and First-Team All-American honors after helping lead the Ducks to yet another CFP appearance.

This might be one of the best mocks I’ve seen for the Chargers thus far. Banks looks like he has the potential to be a massive steal for a team willing to take the chance with his recent injury history, while Pregnon looks the part for a plug-and-play starter up front.
