Jesse Minter completes HC interview with Ravens

gettyimages-2162990595.jpg

Over the past few days following the end to the Chargers’ 2025 season, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has been requested to interview with every single team that is currently searching for a new head coach outside of the Steelers.

On Wednesday, the Baltimore Ravens were the most recent team to announce they had completely an interview with Minter, marking an interesting and potential transition from John Harbaugh to a coach who was just recently calling the defense for his brother in Los Angeles.

The Ravens had taken a step back the last two seasons on the defensive side following the departure of Mike Macdonald who took over the Seahawks following Pete Carroll’s firing in early 2024. For years, Baltimore’s calling card had been their defense, led by the likes of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and other former franchise greats. However, that identity has nearly evaporated and it seemingly played a role in the eventual firing of John Harbaugh.

Minter would certainly get the Ravens back to where they want to be with that unit, and I don’t think he’d have any issue finding a new offensive play-caller given the vast wealth of up-and-coming names across the league, including some of the youngest names being interviewed right now for other head coach openings.

As one of the many who does not want to see Minter leave, at least the Ravens aren’t in the same division. However, I’m sure we’d all much prefer him to land the NFC over at one of the AFC’s recent powers.

Chargers among best NFL rookie classes

imagn-27890186.jpg

The Los Angeles Chargers are disappointed after their playoff elimination against the New England Patriots, but that shouldn’t take away from the accomplishments they made throughout the season.

One of the bigger triumphs for the Chargers came with the rookie class, which came in at No. 8 in ESPN writer Aaron Schatz’s ranking.

“The Chargers’ rookie impact came primarily from skill players on offense, led by fifth-round tight end Oronde Gadsden. He ended the season with 49 catches for 664 yards and three touchdowns. First-round running back Omarion Hampton missed games because of a fractured ankle but ended up with 124 carries for 545 yards and four touchdowns in nine games. Second-round wide receiver Tre’ Harris was less productive than expected but had 30 catches for 324 yards and a touchdown,” Schatz wrote.

“On defense, the most impactful rookie was sixth-round safety RJ Mickens. He started five games and had 29 combined tackles with two interceptions as part of a three-safety package with Derwin James Jr. and Elijah Molden. Third-round defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell had five starts and 31 combined tackles with a forced fumble. Other impact players included undrafted cornerback Nikko Reed and fifth-round wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith.”

The only teams that ranked ahead of the Chargers were the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and New Orleans Saints.

The Chargers got some production from everyone in the rookie class, so that’s certainly a positive. There are building blocks for a strong foundation, which is crucial for the team in order to move closer towards a Super Bowl.

Chargers complete OC interview with pass game coordinator Marcus Brady

gettyimages-2222826363.jpg

On Thursday morning, the Chargers announced that they had completed an interview with passing game coordinator Marcus Brady for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Brady joined the Chargers in 2024 as part of Jim Harbaugh’s initial staff and has held the same position his entire tenure.

we’ve completed an interview with Marcus Brady for offensive coordinator pic.twitter.com/N81HvGiJsj

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 15, 2026

Brady was hired alongside former offensive coordinator Greg Roman to help develop a plan for the passing attack due to Roman mainly having his success as a run game aficionado. However, the passing attack under Roman was a total mess by end his time in LA and it never quite found a way to adapt to the injuries that kept them from trotting out a serviceable offensive line. Still, that was not an excuse to flat out fail at developing some easy buttons for Herbert in the pocket.

Now this is not a surprising interview because Brady is a familiar face and teams always tend to interview in-house to minimize overall change, but I’m highly doubt he gets much real consideration. He was still a part of the duo that led the offense and I don’t think fans will want recycle any name associated with what was put out there this season. And that goes double for the playoff stinker.

Chargers complete OC interview with Brian Callahan

gettyimages-2240653566.jpg

The Chargers announced on Friday that they have completed an interview with former Bengals offensive coordinator and Titans head coach Brian Callahan. Callahan called the offense under Cincy head coach Zac Taylor from 2019 to 2023. After being hired by Tennessee, Callahan last a little over a year before being ousted by the Titans.

we’ve completed an interview with Brian Callahan for offensive coordinator pic.twitter.com/yMP0sZRpIy

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 16, 2026

Before calling plays for the Bengals, Callahan spent time coaching quarterbacks for both the Raiders (2018) and Lions (2016-2017). As an offensive assistant with the Broncos from 2013-2015, Callahan was part of the team that won Super Bowl 50.

In Callahan’s first two seasons with the Bengals, they ranked 30th and 29th in points scored, respectively. That 2020 season was Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins’ rookie season where the former played in 10 games and threw for 2,688 yards and 13 touchdowns. Higgins hauled in 67 passes and 908 yards with six scores that year, as well.

Chargers complete OC interview with QBs coach Shane Day

gettyimages-2156096758.jpg

The Chargers announced on Thrusday that they’ve completed a second interview with an in-house candidate as quarterbacks coach Shane Day was given a look for the team’s offensive coordinator opening.

Day has never once held the title of offensive coordinator in his career but he’s been integral in the development of several of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks, including Herbert and the Texans’ C.J. Stroud. Day has spent two stints with the Chargers as Herbert’s position coach, the first time under Brandon Staley in 2022 (fired with OC Joe Lombardi) and the second under Harbaugh when the latter was hired in 2024.

we’ve completed an interview with Shane Day for offensive coordinator pic.twitter.com/YCx8cd8n8f

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 16, 2026

Similar to the news of Marcus Brady interviewing for the position, I believe this is just the Chargers doing their due diligence and giving some in-house names a look. Day has shown to have a great rapport with Herbert over the years and it wouldn’t be crazy to think he may have some insight into what the best offense looks like for Herbert.

LBs coach NaVorro Bowman stepping away from Chargers

The Chargers made rightful changes to their offensive staff this week by firing offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin. With the team also expecting to lose defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to one of the NFL’s nine vacant head coach openings, there’s going to be a handful of new faces in prominent positions in LA next season.

One name that won’t be with the Bolts next season due to other circumstances will be linebackers coach NaVorro Bowman who is stepping away from the team. Bowman is reportedly removing himself from coaching to be more involved in his son’s life and future as the latter is one of the nation’s top basketball prospects.

Bowman was hired to coach linebackers when Jim Harbaugh put together his initial staff in 2024. The former 49ers great has overseen the swift development of Daiyan Henley who turned into a Pro Bowl-level player under Bowman’s guidance. The Chargers linebacker room has taken some hits over the past two seasons, including missed games from veteran Denzel Perryman and 2024 third-rounder Junior Colson.

Interesting week of news for the Chargers. The Callahan interview is intriguing - his track record is a bit uneven. Those early years in Cincinnati were rough, but he was also working with a young Burrow and building something that eventually got them to a Super Bowl. The Titans stint was too short to really judge fairly, though it obviously didn't go well.

Shane Day feels like the safer pick if they want continuity with Herbert. The guy clearly knows how to develop quarterbacks and has that existing relationship. No playcalling experience is a concern, but sometimes promoting from within works out when there's already trust established.

Bowman stepping away is understandable. Family first, and if his son is a top basketball prospect, that's a pretty narrow window to be present for. Henley's development under him was impressive though - hopefully whoever replaces him can keep that momentum going.

The bigger question mark for me is what happens with Minter. Feels like it's a matter of when, not if, he gets a head coaching gig. Losing both your OC and DC in the same offseason would be rough, even if Roman needed to go.

Also caught that note about Mahomes targeting Week 1 for his return. ACL recovery timelines have gotten better, but that's still ambitious. Should be interesting to see how the AFC West shakes out next year.

Chargers sign 14 players to reserve/future contracts

gettyimages-2228811097.jpg

Just a day after players returned to The Bolt for locker clean out day, the Chargers announced a list of 14 players they are signing to reserve/future contracts.

The most notable names on the list are receiver Dalevon Campbell, tight end Tanner McLachlan, and running back Amar Johnson.

The other 10 players include longsnapper Peter Bowden, defensive lineman TeRah Edwards, wideouts Luke Grimm and JaQuae Jackson, linebacker Emany Johnson, center Josh Kaltenberger, edge rusher Gardmon Randolph, 2025 sixth-round pick Branson Taylor, cornerback Isas Waxter, quarterback DJ Uiagaleilei, and tight end Thomas Yassmin.

Campbell showed out enough during the 2025 preseason that the Carolina Panthers at one point sniped him off the Chargers practice squad during the season, but he was ultimately released and re-signed by LA.

McLachlan is a former draft pick of the Bengals that unfortunately did not pan out for them, but the Chargers have recently found success with “F” tight ends who can stretch the field. While at Arizona, McLachlan was an impact player for the Wildcats.

Johnson spent the 2025 preseason with the Packers where he put together a standout performance that included a touchdown run of over 40 yards. He was called up to the active roster for multiple games while the Chargers were dealing with injuries at the position.

Chargers predicted to sign major free agent for offensive line

gettyimages-2197475871.jpg

It’s clear that the Los Angeles Chargers need to improve their offensive line throughout the offseason.

While Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater should return from injuries, the team needs to do its best to shore up the interior part of the line.

“The Chargers’ top priority from last offseason remains the same, as center Bradley Bozeman continues to grade out as one of the NFL’s worst centers — 31st in pass block win rate and 18th in run block rate at his position. Right guard Mekhi Becton, whom they signed in the offseason, has struggled, too, and voiced frustration about how the team has managed him,” ESPN insider Kris Rhim wrote.

ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz believes the team could look to sign Pittsburgh Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo.

“The Chargers will blow their free agency budget on Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo,“ Schatz wrote. ”Despite turning 33 next season, he is still playing at a high level. Seumalo ranked second among all guards with a 96.9% pass block win rate this season.“

Seumalo, 32, brings Super Bowl experience to the offensive line from his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. After spending the last three seasons with the Steelers, Seumalo could be looking for a chance to move closer to his native Hawaii after spending a decade in Pennsylvania to start his NFL career.

Seumalo made his first Pro Bowl back in 2024 with the Steelers and has started 61 games since the 2022 season. The fact that he continues to show up and play at a high level should be reason for the Chargers to zero in their focus on him being the top offseason signing for the team.

Chargers interview Cardinals pass game coordinator for OC vacancy

gettyimages-158861542.jpg

The Chargers doubled up on interviews for their vacant offensive coordinator position on Monday as they followed Arthur Smith’s interview with another involving Cardinals pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Terrell.

Terrell has been in his role since the 2023 season and has previous NFL stops with the Carolina Panthers (2018-2019) and Washington Commanders (2020-2022).

we’ve completed an interview with Drew Terrell for offensive coordinator pic.twitter.com/9LykNo7dPG

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 20, 2026

Before becoming a coach, Terrell played collegiately at Stanford from 2009-2012. His first two seasons came under Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh before the latter took the job as head coach of the 49ers. Terrell was Stanford’s leading receiver in 2012 when they went 12-2 en route to winning the Pac-12 Championship and the Rose Bowl.

This past season, Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson became the first Arizona wideout since DeAndre Hopkins in 2020 to go over 1,000 yards in a season. Quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Jacoby Brissett combined to throw for 4,328 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2025, as well, which would have ranked fifth in the NFL this year among passing yards leaders during the regular season.

Chargers land highly-regarded DT prospect in Mel Kiper’s latest mock

gettyimages-2251007550.jpg

Everyone and their mother knows that the Chargers’ biggest need this offseason is reinforcements along the interior offensive line. However, there are still plenty of draft analysts that believe the Bolts could stand to upgrade the interior of their defensive line.

To be quite honest, I’m not entirely sure where this pressing need seems to be coming from. The Chargers finished the 2025 regular season as the eight-best defense against the run. Veteran Teair Tart had arguably the best season of his career and it’s highly unlikely he plays elsewhere given that LA is the only place he’s played up to this level (they’re also no doubt the team will give him his worth this offseason). The team also just drafted Jamaree Caldwell in the third round a year ago and he played as the other starter in the middle for most of the season.

Still, ESPN’s Mel Kiper believes the Bolts need an upgraded presence along the interior, it’s just not the side of the ball that most fans would agree with. In his first mock of the year for the 2026 draft, Kiper has the Chargers taking Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods with the 22nd-overall pick.

Woods looked like a top-10 pick heading into the season, but the production dipped, and here he is outside the top 20,“ says Kiper. ”The Chargers won’t complain, though. They would love to bring in a talented 3-technique with strength and versatility. At his best, Woods can wreck an opponent’s game plan. Can coach Jim Harbaugh (and maybe defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, if he isn’t hired elsewhere as a head coach) get Woods’ game back to that level? If so, he’d be a really good replacement for free agent Teair Tart.

The 6’4, 310-pound Woods was seen as the top defensive tackle in the draft prior to the 2025 season. However, after recording eight tackles for loss and three sacks a year ago, those numbers dropped to 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks this season which is not what you want to see from a player projected to go early on day one.

A fun fact: Woods was used as a goal-line back for the Tigers in 2025, earning eight carries for 15 yards and scoring twice.

New Scott Matlock 2.0? One can hope.

Clemson DT Peter Woods is a nightmare for offensive linemen.

Chargers expected to make Mike McDaniel new OC

gettyimages-2253221015.jpg

The Chargers have found their next offensive coordinator.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chargers are expected to make former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel their next offensive play-caller, replacing Greg Roman who was fired following the team’s wild card loss to the Patriots.

McDaniel has spent the past four seasons with Miami where his offense ranked in the top six twice, including the league’s number one offense during the 2023 season (401.3 yards per game). In his first season with the Dolphins (2022), he took the NFL’s 25th-ranked offense and turned it into the sixth-ranked offense, going from an average of 307.0 yards per game to 364.5.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 21, 2026

During the 2023 season, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for a career high 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns to go with a 69.3 completion percentage. In 2024, Tagovailoa struggled with injuries and missed six games, but he still completed a career-high 72.9 percent of his passes for 2,867 yards in 11 games.

One of the underrated aspects of McDaniel’s time with the Dolphins was his ability to get a lot out of the run game along with his explosive passing attack. During that 2023 season, his team averaged 135.8 rushing yards per game, good for sixth in the NFL. In 2025, with Tagovailoa and the passing game having taken a massive step back, the ground game still ranked 13th with 120.2 yards per game.

During his last stint as an offensive coordinator, McDaniel helped lead the 49ers offense to the seventh-ranked unit in the NFL with an average of 375.7 yards per game. They also ranked seventh in rushing yards per game with 127.4 per game.

Out of all the available play-callers left on the market, McDaniel was arguably the best there was. He had several interviews for head coaching opportunities this cycle but he chose to step out of the running for those and make his way out to Los Angeles where he will get the chance to coach Justin Herbert in 2026.

Chargers complete interview with former Ravens DC Zach Orr

A day after completing an interview with former Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, the Chargers officially announced they have completed another interview, this time with former Ravens DC Zach Orr. — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) January 23, 2026

In 2024, his first as a NFL defensive coordinator, Orr led the Ravens to the league’s 10th best in total defense and ninth-best in points allowed per game (21.2). However, those numbers took a big step back in 2025 as Baltimore finished 24th in total defense (354.5) and 18th in points allowed (23.4).

As a player, Orr went undrafted in 2014 out of North Texas. He played three seasons for the Ravens from 2014-2016, collecting 162 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. He began his coaching career as an analyst for the Ravens in 2017. In 2021, Orr spent the season as the Jaguars’ outside linebackers coach before returning to the Ravens the next season to coach inside linebackers.

Chargers interview Dennard Wilson for DC vacancy

gettyimages-2245056705.jpg

On Friday, the Chargers officially announced they have completed an interview with former Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson for the same position. Wilson has spent the last two seasons calling the defense in Tennessee and spent the 2023 season coaching defensive backs for the Ravens.

In Baltimore, Wilson oversaw the quick ascension of safety Kyle Hamilton who was named an All-Pro for the first time. When Mike Macdonald was hired away to be the head coach of the Seahawks, many around the Ravens believed Wilson should have been his replacement at defensive coordinator before the hiring of Zach Orr.

The Titans finished 21st in total defense this past season (345.1) and 28th in points allowed per game (28.1). In 2024, Tennessee was the league’s 2nd-best unit in total defense (311.2) but finished 30th in points allowed per game (27.1).

Prior to ending up in Baltimore, Wilson spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles where he coached defensive backs (2021-2022) and held pass game coordinator responsibilities (2022).

Should Chargers trade WR Quentin Johnston?

gettyimages-2256101020.jpg

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quinton Johnston is in an interesting position going into the offseason.

Johnston, a first-round pick out of TCU, struggled at the beginning of his career. However, he has picked things up with improvements year-over-year. Even though he is getting better, the Chargers could end up deciding to move on from him this offseason.

“The Chargers have to decide on his fifth-year option for 2027 this offseason, a figure that projects at $17.5 million. That’s not going to be an unreasonable cost for a second wideout, but the Chargers have Herbert on a massive deal and also will pay McConkey before the 2027 season. Coach Jim Harbaugh and GM Joe Hortiz also inherited Johnston from the previous regime, so they’re not as attached to him as they would be for one of their own picks,” ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell wrote.

“A trade might be the best thing for Johnston, who I think profiles best as a power slot receiver. With McConkey (and Allen this season) ahead of him for slot snaps, Johnston took only 13% of his snaps out of the slot in 2025. He averaged 2.6 yards per route run out of the slot, just about double what he averaged split out wide. A place where he can play in the slot on a regular basis might help unlock some untapped potential, and even if another team picks up his fifth-year option, it would be on the hook for only about $20 million combined over the next two seasons.”

Johnston has not lived up to his first-round status, and picking up the fifth year option on his contract could be a big decision. Based on what he’s been able to produce, it may not be the right choice.

If the Chargers trade him this offseason, they will at least get some form of compensation for him, especially if he becomes an expiring contract should his fifth-year option gets declined. There is potential for him to improve, though, which could be intriguing to teams needing a wide receiver.

BFTB community, what do you think of the possibility of Johnny getting traded this offseason? Chime off in the comments section below.
