3 things to watch for in Chargers-Chiefs: Bolts DEF needs a big day from the pass rush

imagn-27406233.jpg

The Chiefs come into Week 15 with a 6-7 record after losing 20-10 to the Houston Texans. That 10-point victory for Houston was spurred on by their elite defense and their ferocious pass rush that the Chargers know all too well from their playoff loss this past January.

One of the biggest keys to the Chargers completing the season sweep against Kansas City will be how much their pass rush can affect Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. The Bolts do not have the likes of Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson out on the edge, but the duo of Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu, along with Odafe Oweh, can still force just about any quarterback off their spot.

Another factor will obviously be Herbert and the state of his surgically-repaired hand. The Chiefs will know this is a weak point for him and that may lead to their defense looking to focus their pressure points on his blindside to potentially force easier sacks if he’s not willing to protect himself with that side of his body.

Alright let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Without further ado, let’s go ahead and dive in to the three things I’ll be watching closely when these team take the field on Sunday.

1.) How will the Chargers attack a depleted tackle position for the Chiefs?

As it stands just two days before game day, the Chiefs look like they’ll have to start Esa Pole and Jaylon Moore at left and right tackle. Pole made his NFL debut last week against the Texans while Moore was signed this offseason as a free agent but has mainly played in a reserve role before injuries mounted.

Pole had a fairly good outing against Houston where he allowed three pressures (one hit) and was called for a single penalty. Against that pass rush, not allowing a sack is definitely a good night, but the Chargers will be right there to see if it wasn’t a fluke.

As for Moore, he allowed eight pressures to the Texans and overall has let up 26 on the year. He did not play against the Chargers in Week One but he’ll get his fill of them this week if Jesse Minter has anything to say about it.

2.) Will the protection plan adapt at all after a disastrous game against the Eagles?

Justin Herbert ended up being sacked seven times against the Eagles which is now the most he’s ever been taken down in a single game. At one point, Herbert was being pressured on 72 percent of his dropbacks which, if it stayed on that pace through the end of the game, it would have been the most pressured a quarterback had in a single game in the Next Gen Stats era.

The Chargers won this game, however, which means the coaching staff is not likely to make any changes. In their eyes, they’re not going to fix what isn’t broken, even if it looked broken as all get out on Monday Night. The Chiefs have some real studs and plus-athletes on their defensive front. They’re going to look at the film and see that the Bolts struggle with A gap pressure and situations where the running back has to make a one-on-block in blitz pickup.

Kansas City is going to send the likes of Nick Bolton and former Charger Drue Tranquill up the middle all night long if they can’t find a way to plug that gap.

Here’s the cray thing though: Mekhi Becton played his best game in pass protection in Week One against the Chiefs when he posted an 88.1 pass block grade. In that game, he was called for two penalties but did not allow a single pressure on Herbert. Since then. however, Becton has just three games with a pass block grade over 60.0 and has allowed a team-high 29 pressures on the year, including eight against the Eagles, alone.

3.) Chargers offense must threaten vertical passing game, exploit weak safety group

The Chargers may be able to take advantage of a matchup this week in the form of Chiefs safety Chamarri Connor who has been free money this year in coverage.

Per Pro Football Focus, Connor has allowed 41-of-48 targets to be completed his way for 558 yards and three touchdowns. His coverage grade of 47.6 is also the worst on the team and by far the worst among all of their defensive backs who have seen any sort of meaningful playing time.

With this is mind, the Chargers may be able to give the Chiefs some of their own medicine by utilizing the deep ball and pressing the seams. Right off the top this could be a nice day for tight end Oronde Gadsden II if Greg Roman is able to get him matched up on Connor, and even Ladd McConkey could enjoy a bounce-back game after being shut down by Cooper DeJean on Monday night.

Tre’ Harris and Quentin Johnston are also ones to watch on deep routes this week, but McConkey is currently the fastest receiver (outside of the injured Derius Davis) and he’s truly due for a big day. Call it a gut feeling, but something like that happening against the Chiefs just makes sense.

Former NFL MVP feels ‘disrespected’ by Colts signing 44-year old Philip Rivers

imagn-27304770.jpg

Jealousy can be a heck of a thing.

Following the Colts announcing the signing of 44-year old quarterback Philips Rivers, who ended his career in Indy after playing there in 2020, former MVP Cam Newton didn’t mince words about his thoughts on the move during a recent podcast appearance. Newton called it “almost like a slap to my face” and expressed that he felt incredibly disrespected that the Colts would think to call Rivers over him who is still almost a decade younger.

Newton also mentioned that he hasn’t officially retired and is still working out to stay in playing shape.

Here’s the thing: Even when both were still starting quarterbacks in the NFL during that 2020 season, Rivers was so drastically better than Newton that I’m legitimately surprised Newton is still this confident in his playing ability.

Rivers led the Colts to the postseason in his final season at an age older than Newton is now. Newton, on the other hand, was floundering in his second stint with the Panthers. He went 0-5 in his five starts for Carolina in 2021, throwing four touchdowns to five interceptions. He also didn’t even eclipse 700 yards passing despite playing almost a third of the season.

In the 2020 season as a member of the Patriots, Newton threw eight touchdowns to 10 picks. He finished the year with a 7-8 record. Granted he did rush for an additional 822 yards and 17 touchdowns over that same span, but obviously reality shows just how useful all those touchdowns were winning 33 percent of your games.

This whole thing is just ridiculous and Newton should know better. He knows what he did during his final two seasons in the NFL and he should know the league well enough to acknowledge why he slowly faded from the field in the first place.

The NFL world thanks him for the memories and the notable career he had. Beyond that, I don’t think he should be griping about who is getting a shot over who when the two guys involved couldn’t be further from each other as players.

Chargers sign TE Tanner McLachlan to practice squad

imagn-24019624.jpg

On Thursday morning, the Chargers announced the signing of tight end Tanner McLachlan to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, the team is releasing rookie center Josh Kaltenberger.

McLachlan is a former sixth-round pick of the Bengals in 2024 while simultaneously being a sixth-round pick in that year’s CFL Draft by the Calgary Stampeders. McLachlan did not appear in any games for the Bengals and was eventually part of final cutdowns this past August.

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) December 11, 2025

McLachlan had a notable career at the University of Arizona where he played from 2022-2023. After two years at at Southern Utah, McLachlan transferred upwards and found success immediately. In his first season at a Power 5 school, he recorded 34 receptions for 456 yards and two touchdowns. He improved on those numbers in his final season with 45 catches for 528 yards and four scores.

At the NFL Combine, McLachlan ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at 6’5 and 241 pounds. He was a vertical threat and seam stretched for the Wildcats with a skillset that looked like it would transfer well to the NFL. Now he lands with a team looking for tight end depth with a shot at impressing in the final weeks of the season.

4 winners, 1 big loser from Chargers-Chiefs: Youngsters balled out in gutsy win

imagn-27816292.jpg

The Chargers got big, big performances out of their young studs against the Chiefs.

Third-year pass rusher Tuli Tuipulotu led the attack in Patrick Mahomes as the group finished with five sacks. Third-year linebacker Daiyan Henley picked off Mahomes in the red zone to keep points off the board.

It was also a pair of rookie wideouts that helped the offense get the most out of their shaky pass protection as both authored the two biggest receptions of the day while Herbert was getting knocked around in the pocket. Tre’ Harris somehow hauled in a perfect pass from Herbert for a 37-yard gain that then directly led to KeAndre Lambert-Smith’s first NFL touchdown several plays later.

Overall this was a huge game for not only these players, but the Chargers organization as a whole. For now at least, the Chiefs monkey is off their backs and it’s time to look ahead without that massive cloud hanging over their building.

With that said, let’s take a look at the Chargers’ winners and losers from this week’s win.

Winners

WRs Tre’ Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith

On a day where the offense looked about as dreadful as it has all season long, it was the Chargers’ two rookie wide receivers who made the biggest plays of the game against the Chiefs. Coincidentally, they both came on the same drive which led to the Chargers’ only touchdown of the game.

After getting beat up for the better part of the second half, Herbert took a snap on second-and-10 from their own 40-yard line. He once again had to maneuver a murky pocket and found just enough room to loft a pass towards a streaking Harris up the left sideline before he got walloped.

The ball somehow, someway, landed perfectly into Harris’ arms as he seemingly made the catch before rolling out of bounds. With the call on the field being a completion, the replays that may have shown the ball hitting the ground as he landed were not clear and sufficient enough to overturn, so the play stood.

Three plays later, Herbert once again got the ball off while avoiding pressure with a jump pass towards the back of the end zone. What looked like an ill-advised pass somehow traveled just fast enough to get to a leaping Lambert-Smith between two defenders. The score was KLS’ first professional touchdown and just his second reception of the year and it could not have come at a bigger moment.

As Herbert said in a postgame interview, Harris and KLS are going to make a lot of plays for this franchise in the years to come.

EDGEs Tuli Tuipulotu and Odafe Oweh

It was the Chargers pass rush that helped set the pace defensively on Sunday and no one was more impactful in the first half than the duo of Tuli and Oweh. By the end of the game, each of them had recorded two sacks and another tackle for loss.

For those keeping track at home, that makes 12 sacks for Tuipulotu this year (previous career high was eight in 2024) and seven sacks for Oweh, all of which have come since being traded to the Chargers from the Ravens (nine games).

The pass rush as been one of the pivotal factors of the defense’s recent surge for the Chargers and Tuli’s impact (seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss in the past seven games) cannot be understated.

Losers

Pass Protection

What else is there to keep saying about this group? Each week together, regardless of if it’s a new combination or not, is not getting better. It was PAINFUL to watch Justin Herbert try to stand behind his line to find open receivers. It’s been two straight games of watching the Chargers’ star player get molly-whopped and even with the record they have, I cannot have any sort of confidence that this group will allow the Chargers to get past the first round of the playoffs.

The wild thing is, the Chargers offensive line only allowed six pressures and two sacks to the Chiefs. That feels like an unreal stat line given just how little time Herbert seemed to have on any given dropback. At this point in the season, there’s just no real answer and no real combination to be made that will give the Chargers the needed boost to this area of their offense.

Chargers open up as betting underdogs ahead of Week 16 vs. Cowboys

gettyimages-2168272294.jpg

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a big win against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15, eliminating their AFC West foe from being able to qualify for the playoffs. Now, the Chargers get a chance to disappoint another large fanbase when they visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16.

The Chargers are a better team record-wise than the Cowboys, but FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Chargers as a 1.5-point underdog against Dak Prescott’s Dallas squad, which needs a win to keep its NFC East title hopes alive.

The Chargers are 10-4, which is two games behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West. They are currently holding onto a Wild Card spot alongside the Buffalo Bills, who are also 10-4, and the Houston Texans, who are 9-5, but have won six games in a row.

The Chargers can move one step closer to the playoffs with a win against the Cowboys while keeping their division title hopes alive. The Chargers need to gain a game in the next two weeks in order to have a chance to win the division when the two teams meet in Week 18.

If the Chargers lose to the Cowboys and the Broncos beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver will win the AFC West, forcing Los Angeles to go the wild card route in order to make the postseason.

Kickoff between the Chargers and Cowboys is set for Sunday at 10 a.m. PT from AT&T Stadium. Fans can watch the game on CBS or stream it on the Paramount Plus app.
