Chargers urged to re-sign offensive lineman in free agency

gettyimages-2226252838.jpg

The Los Angeles Chargers are going into the season with a lot of concern for their offensive line going into the future.

Rashawn Slater suffered a major season-ending injury, Joe Alt is moving from the right side to the left to replace him and Trey Pipkins is stepping in as well. The team also has an uncertain future with guard Zion Johnson, who had his fifth-year option declined by the team last year.

Bleacher Report writer Alex Ballentine believes Johnson should be a top priority for the Chargers to sign in free agency next offseason.

“The Chargers made it clear that re-signing Zion Johnson wasn’t an immediate priority this offseason. They declined his fifth-year option, making it possible he will become a free agent in 2026. It’s understandable, he hasn’t lived up to his billing as a first-round guard,” Ballentine wrote.

“That being said, he has the physical tools to be what the Chargers want at the position. If he can prove that in his second year under Jim Harbaugh then he will easily become the most important free agent for the Chargers to keep around.”

Johnson has been one of the team’s starting guards ever since he was taken with the No. 17 overall pick out of Boston College in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he hasn’t lived up to standards.

The Chargers have already spent so much money with Slater becoming the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. However, his injury leads to some reasons for concern on the offensive line. The team is also going to have to prepare to pay Alt, who was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Either the Chargers will end up re-signing Johnson or the team could look to spend an early draft pick on an interior lineman in 2026.

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice not expected to miss season opener vs. Chargers

imagn-26827754.jpg

In March 2024, Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a multi-car accident that led to him being chard with two third-degree felonies: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.

In July of this year, Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation. He plead guilty to the above charges. As of now, the case will be dismissed if he completes the probation.

On Thursday morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on September 30. This means that Rice will be able to play in the team’s first four regular season games before finding out his discipline handed down by the league. Of course, this ensures that — barring any further injuries — that Rice will likely be available for the Chiefs against the Chargers in Brazil for the season opener.

Rice is seemingly all the way back from a torn LCL in his right knee that ended his 2024 season after just four games. He had 24 catches for 288 yards and two scores prior to the injury.

Chargers sign CB Harrison Hand

gettyimages-1353905142.jpg

On Thursday afternoon, The Athletic’s Daniel Popper reported that the Chargers have added another cornerback to the team as they’ve signed for Vikings draft pick Harrison Hand after working him out earlier this week. In a corresponding move, the team waived/injured wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick.

The Chargers also signed cornerback Nehemiah Shelton on Wednesday who also worked out for the team with Hand and one other cornerback.

#Chargers signed CB Harrison Hand and waived/injured WR Dez Fitzpatrick.

— Daniel Popper (@danielrpopper) August 14, 2025

Hand originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Vikings in 2020 out of Temple. Before joining the Owls program, he was a member of the Baylor Bears for three seasons. Since being drafted, the 6’0, 197-pound defender has also had stints with the Giants (2022), Bears (2022), and Falcons (2024).

Thus far in his NFL career, Hand has recorded 34 total tackles, four pass breakups, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The signing of both Shelton and Hand come after 2025 UDFA cornerback Eric Rogers wound up injured on a kickoff coverage during the team’s 27-13 win over the Saints this past Sunday. To make room for Shelton, the team also waived/injured fellow 2025 UDFA corner Jordan Oladokun.

Chargers vs. Rams: 3 Position Battles to Watch

imagn-26751680.jpg

The Los Angeles Chargers enter their third preseason game on Saturday 2-0 and look to continue their dominant ways against the Los Angeles Rams. And while their preseason record won’t carry over, nor the record is indicative of anything (the 0-16 Lions were 4-0 in preseason; Ravens went 24-0 from 2015-2023), there are things valuable within the games to focus upon. Chief among them are the competitions that earn more involvement when the records matter.

There are three important competitions as the preseason creeps toward its end. The first and most important: a battle between two rookies.

Wide Receiver

Competitors:
Tre Harris, KeAndre Lambert-Smith

Both Harris and Lambert-Smith were drafted with the hopes of revitalizing a receiver corps needing new talent to flourish as they parted ways with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in 2024. Coincidentally, both have since reunited with the Chargers after their one-year departures, though Williams retired on the first day of training camp, ushering in a reunion with Allen.

Nonetheless, the Chargers have a competition between the two upstarts. Though, it’s not been one to be consumed in the preseason so much as training camp.

K. Lambert-Smith: 24 snaps 2 targets, 2 receptions, 43 yards, 1 TD | 27 snaps, 2 targets, 0 receptions
T. Harris: 24 snaps 1 targets, 0 receptions | 24 snaps, 0 targets

The final two preseason games could tilt the favor in one player’s direction. Harris has the benefit of being a second-round selection. Lambert-Smith has the production — albeit minimal — from the Hall of Fame Game. But if one makes repeated plays down the stretch, it will solidify their early involvement for 2025.

Depth Cornerback

Competitors:
Eric Rogers, Nikko Reed

Rogers and Reed have been the two best cornerbacks this preseason by all counts. And yet, they’re both contending for a roster spot due to the cornerback room featuring Tarheeb Still, Donte Jackson, Cam Hart, Benjamin St-Juste and others. It would take injury or great fortune for both to make the roster, even after their impressive individual performances.

After the Chargers’ first preseason game, our own Michael Peterson had only Reed making the 53. Both are proving to be NFL caliber, but roster gymnastics can only stretch so far. Continue to watch these two contend to make the Chargers’ roster, or find their way elsewhere when cuts are revealed.

Depth Outside Linebacker / Special Teams

Competitors:
Caleb Murphy, Kyle Kennard

Through two games, Caleb Murphy has flashed. No play more noteworthy than Murphy forcing a fumble on the opening play in the Hall of Fame Game against the Lions, which turned into a five-play scoring drive finalized with Trey Lance’s touchdown pass to tight end Will Dissly on 4th & Goal.

Murphy sits just outside the Top 10 in PFF’s pass rush grades among edge rushers this preseason (No. 11, 86.3). Meanwhile, Kennard, the Chargers’ fourth-round pick and 2024 SEC Defensive Player of the Year who racked up 15.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks for the Gamecocks, has hardly seen the field. Kennard played 23 snaps in the Hall of Fame Game and finished with no tallies. He did not play against the New Orleans Saints.

These two are vying for the No. 4 outside linebacker role, which means rotational snaps and filling in to keep the teams’ premier rushers fresh. It also includes involvement in special teams. Watch for them in both roles to see who has the edge in the final two games.

Chargers-Rams Recap: Bolts lose 23-22 to Rams in wild finish

imagn-26864566.jpg

The Chargers and Rams played a rather wacky contest inside SoFi Stadium on Saturday evening that ended in a rather miraculous win for Sean McVay’s group.

With 28 seconds left, the Rams faced fourth-and-10 at the Chargers 48-yard line. Quarterback Stetson Bennett heaved a prayer up the field to receiver Brennan Presley who managed to haul it in with two defenders draped over him. On the very next play, Bennett hit wideout Tru Edwards for the game-winning score to gibe the Rams a 23-22

From one end of the spectrum to the other just like that. The Bolts fall to 2-1 on the preseason and will travel to the 49ers for the preseason finale.

Justin Herbert and the starting offense got to play only the opening drive against the Rams backups. They managed a field before their time was done, but it came at the cost of Quentin Johnston who took a very hard hit near his chin from a defender as he tracked a go ball up the right sideline. He froze up on contact with the ground, but luckily got up on his own and was carted to the locker room.

With the starters and veterans on the sideline, both Tre’ Harris and KeAndre Lamebert-Smith had standout performances. Harris caught six passes for 85 yards (despite some bad misses from Taylor Heinicke) and KLS notched 66 yards on a pair of receptions. Both numbers were good for first and second on the team, respectively.

However, it may have been two UDFAs who authored the biggest plays of the night for the Chargers.

First, wideout Luke Grimm returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown to give the Chargers their biggest lead of the night. Then, with the Rams attempting to respond, defensive tackle TeRah Edwards dropped into coverage on a blitz call before undercutting a slant and taking it back 27 yards the other way.

It was a night full of big plays and momentum swinging wildly back and forth. It’s just unfortunate things swung hard away from the Chargers at the worst of times.

This game is meaningless for any reason that matters, but don’t tell the faithful that. Third and fourth-stringers or not, you want to see your team finish the game strong. The Chargers failed to put it away tonight with a number of different opportunities.

Now, with one week remaining in the preseason, we’ll get to see who is still chasing a roster spot and which players have seemingly locked down a job for this year.

First Quarter

Chargers won the toss and chose to defer. The Bolts offense was up first.

On the second play of the game, Herbert found McConkey over the middle for a 16-yard gain. Herbert then took the following snap and heaved a go ball up the right sideline to Quentin Johnston. The ball ricocheted off his chest before a Rams safety hit him up near the chin area and Johnston could be seen freezing up as he collided with the ground. After being tended to on the field for several minutes, Johnston was able to stand up and walk to the cart before being taken into the locker room.

In Johnston’s place, fifth-round rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith stepped in with the starters and caught his first pass since the Hall of Fame Game on a heck of a throw by Herbert to beat the corner on a corner route.

The Rams defense sniffed out a tight end screen on the ensuing first down which forced a Herbert sack of six yards. After a fade to KLS was broken up in the end zone, Omarion Hampton took a draw play up the middle for seven yards to make the Cameron Dicker field goal even easier. From 32 yards out, Dicker put the Chargers up 3-0 on the opening drive of the game.

Stetson Bennett got the start for the Rams at quarterback and proceeded to march his offense all the way down the field along with some strong runs by running back Blake Corum. On a first down play inside the Chargers 10-yard line, Alohi Gilman took some friendly fire from teammate Denzel Perryman and was slow to get off the field. Fortunately, he did not have to go into the medical tent.

On the next play, Stetson faked a handoff to Corum, turned, and fired a pass to receiver Konata Mumpfield who beat Benjamin St-Juste for a touchdown on a slant. The extra point was good and the Rams led 7-3 with a little under seven minutes in the period.

Second Quarter

The Chargers defensive backups got a stop on their first drive of the game which brought possession back to Taylor Heinicke and the offense. The backups put together a 12-play drive that took over seven minutes off the clock but could not break into the end zone once again. Dicker was good from 39 yards to minimize the Rams lead to 7-6.

Bennett and the Rams offense moved the ball at will once again all the way inside the Chargers five-yard line. After looking leaky all drive, the Bolts defense stood tall in the shadow of their own goal post to get a huge fourth-down stop via Tony Jefferson’s pass breakup to keep their deficit at just one point.

Raheim Sanders showed some excellent burst on his first carry of the night. He bounced a run near his own goal line to the right and made multiple Rams defenders miss en route to a first down. From there, Heinicke could not find a steady rhythm in the passing game. With multiple overthrows to Tre’ Harris and and off-target throw to KLS on third down, the Chargers were forced to punt just before the two-minute warning.

The Chargers defense stepped up again to force a three-and-out and get the ball back for the offense with enough time for their own drive before the half.

Heinicke took a hit early in the drive that forced him to the sideline with Trey Lance replacing him at quarterback. The first three plays for Lance were a 12-yard pass to Tre’ Harris, a 12-yard scramble, and a 37-yard pass to Lambert-Smith who somehow hauled it in before falling out of bounds.

An illegal shift penalty backed up the offense in the red zone and the unit couldn’t break through with three-consecutive incompletions to end the drive. Dicker once again converted and the Bolts took a 9-7 lead into the half.

Third Quarter

The Rams came out rolling on offense to begin the second half.

Bennett helped orchestrate a 10-play, 53-yard drive that took six minutes off the clock but fortunately ended in another defensive stop to hold the Rams to a field goal. The Chargers then responded with their own 10-play drive that took 5:27 off the clock and ended in a rushing touchdown by Raheim Sanders. The drive was highlighted by a 34-yard reception from Lance to Harris that brought the Bolts to the one-yard line.

On the other end, the Rams responded with another touchdown of their own thanks to a 38-yard strike from Bennett to receiver Mario Williams that came as time expired in the quarter.

Heading into the final period, the Rams held a 17-15 lead.

Fourth Quarter

After forcing a three-and-out by the Rams, the Chargers lined up to receive the punt with UDFA wideout Luke Grimm back to return.

The rookie fielded the punt and sprinted towards his left. He proceeded to beat all the Rams pursuers to the sideline and race up the field essentially untouched into the end zone for a 66-yard touchdown. The massive play gave the Chargers a 22-17 lead following Dicker’s successful extra point.

Bennett and the Rams offense took advantage of some blown coverages and a facemask penalty by cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor to quickly march back down the field on the Chargers defense. At the Bolts 25-yard line, Bennett was nearly picked off by safety R.J. Mickens. On the very next play, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter called up a blitz that dropped defensive tackle TeRah Edwards into coverage and the big man undercut a slant route, picked off Bennett, and returned it 27 yards the other way for the game’s first turnover.

the best thing you'll watch all day

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) August 17, 2025

Lance and the Chargers offense went three-and-out with two incomplete passes on second and third down which allowed the Rams to only use one of their remaining three timeouts to stop the clock. On second down, Lance’s pass was tipped. On third down, Lance heaved one up to an open Dalevon Campbell up the left sideline but he never looked up and found the ball which landed harmlessly near the sideline. If he had, he likely walks into the end zone untouched with the dagger score.

Instead, the Chargers gave the ball back and a little bit of hell broke loose.

Bennett and the Rams found themselves facing third-and-10 at the Chargers 48-yard line with 28 seconds left. The Rams quarterback took the snap, dropped back, and was hit by Tre’Mon Morris-Brash as he was wound up to throw. Despite initially being called a lost fumble, the officials overturned the call to an incompletion. On fourth down, Bennett heaved a prayer to wideout Brennan Presley down the field who somehow caught the pass with two Chargers draped over him.

On the very next play, Bennett hit receiver Tru Edwards just inside the goal line for the game-winning score.

From a VERY probable win for the Chargers to an improbable loss, the Bolts fell 23-22 to the Rams inside SoFi Stadium.

Quentin Johnston carted off vs. Rams; KeAndre Lambert-Smith heads to locker room

gettyimages-2191134587.jpg

On the third offensive play of the preseason exhibition between the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams, wide receiver Quentin Johnston suffered what appears to be a head injury after taking a huge hit from Rams defensive back Tanner Ingle. Johnston was struck hard and it appears his head hits the field, too.

— San Diego Strong (@PadresStrong) August 16, 2025

According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, Johnston did get up after being visited by trainers on his own power. He got onto the cart, after slamming one of his gloves onto the field and has left the game.

Near the end of the second quarter, KeAndre Lambert-Smith was also injured on a ball thrown over the middle in dangerous territory. Trainers saw to him on the field before he left the field under his own power and went into the locker room.

Both Johnston and Lambert-Smith are expected to contribute significantly for the Chargers this season. The hope is neither suffered significant injuries.

This article may update as more information is released.
