Jrue Holiday will miss Game 4 with a right hamstring strain, while Jaylen Brown remains questionable with a right knee posterior impingement.

ORLANDO — The Celtics will be without Jrue Holiday on Sunday as they look to take a 3-1 lead against the Orlando Magic. They could also be without Jaylen Brown, who has been dealing with a right knee posterior impingement since mid-February.

Brown, who missed regular season games tending to the knee injury, is questionable with the injury, and will likely go through warmups as he did on Friday. He sat out the final three games of the regular season before receiving knee injections ahead of the playoffs.

When asked about re-appearing on the injury report after Friday’s 95-93 loss, Brown simply said: “[I’m] taking it one day at a time.”

Through three first-round playoff games, Brown is averaging 23.7 points on 53.2% shooting, while shooting 54.5% from three.

What we know about Jrue Holiday’s injury

Holiday, who missed Game 3 with a right hamstring strain, didn’t warm up on Friday and was listed as out on the Celtics’ injury report, which came out on Saturday afternoon. The Celtics guard was in street clothes on the bench. It’s not clear when exactly he suffered the injury, as he was able to finish Game 2 without a noticeable limp.

Mazzulla declined to share much information when asked about Holiday’s injury ahead of Game 3, simply noting that he was day-to-day and would go through his testing ahead of any update.

In a media availability on Saturday morning, Derrick White said that everyone will have to step up in Holiday’s absence.

Derrick White and the Celtics will once again be without Jrue Holiday in Game 4 against the Orlando Magic.

“Obviously, you can’t replace what Jrue Holiday brings on both sides of the ball — so everybody has a little bit different role and responsibility on both sides,” White said.

Holiday was impactful on both ends in the first two rounds of the playoffs against the Magic, averaging 10 points per game and shooting 42.9% from three, while guarding Magic star Paolo Banchero.

The Celtics look to bounce back from their disappointing performance in Game 3 as they take on the Magic in Orlando in Game 4.

After a disappointing loss on Friday, the Celtics will look to bounce back as they face the Orlando Magic for Game 4 of the first round series. The Celtics won Game 1 103-86 in Boston on Sunday with a full roster. They won Game 2 109-100 on Wednesday, also in Boston, but without Jayson Tatum. In both games, the Magic kept it close in the first half but the Celtics pulled away with a big run to start the 3rd quarter of both games.

Game 4 was very different. The Celtics had a big 2nd quarter in this game and took a 10 point lead into halftime. Then, in the 3rd quarter, the Magic used a full court press to fluster the Celtics into missed shot and turnovers and they scored just 11 points in the quarter. The Magic continued their reckless play, causing another injury. Cole Anthony pulled Jaylen Brown down to the floor causing him to dislocate his finger.

In NBA history, 587 teams have held a 2-1 series lead. Of those teams that were down 1-2, 117 of them went on to win the series. If we are looking at just first round series, 225 teams have gone up 2 games to 1. Of those 225 teams, 183 teams that were up 2-1 went on to win the series. 42 teams that were down 1-2 went on to win the series. Teams that go up 3 games to 1, win the series 95.6% of the time.

This is the fourth time these two teams have met in the playoffs and the first time since 2010, when the Celtics won the Eastern Conference Finals 4-2. With the loss on Friday, the Celtics and Magic are tied with 10 playoff wins for each team. The Celtics need to win this series as quickly as possible to avoid more injuries at the hands of the reckless Magic players.

This will be an interesting matchup as illustrated by several statistics. The Celtics average the 2nd fewest turnovers (11.9) while the Magic are 2nd with 16.2 forced turnovers per game. The first game went the Celtics way in this category. The Celtics had just 9 turnovers in the game while the Magic had 15. In Game 2, the Celtics had 10 turnovers to 7 for the Magic. In Game 3, the Celtics had an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers to 14 for the Magic.

The Celtics are first in fewest shooting fouls committed while the Magic draw the 2nd most shooting fouls per 100 possessions. In Game 1, the Celtics were called for 13 fouls for the game while the Magic were called for 17 fouls. In Game 2, the Celtics were called for 19 fouls while the Magic were called for 23. In Game 3, The Celtics were called for 20 fouls while the Magic were called for 23 fouls.

The Magic have played very physically and have had some very reckless plays. In Game 1, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope took out Jayson Tatum, who injured his wrist on the play. In Game 2, Goga Bitadze took out Kristaps Porzingis with his elbow, giving him 5 stitches in his forehead. In Game 3, Cole Anthony pulled down Jaylen Brown by the arm, dislocating his finger. The Magic have amassed 3 flagrant fouls and have caused 3 injuries to key Celtics players.

The most important statistic is 3 point shooting. The Celtics averaged 48.2 threes per game in the regular season while the Magic limited teams to 31.4 attempted 3’s per game, fewest in the league. In Game 1, the Celtics attempted 37 threes, which is 11 under their season average. They made 18 of those. The Magic took just 27 threes and made just 10. In Game 2, The Celtics once again attempted 37 threes and made 12, while the Magic attempted 29 and made just 7. In Game 3, the Celtics attempted a season low 27 threes and hit just 9 while the Magic attempted 32 threes and hit 8.

Jayson Tatum (wrist), Jaylen Brown (knee) and Jrue Holiday (hamstring) were on the injury list leading up to Game 3. Tatum was doubtful and Brown and Holiday were questionable. Just before tip off, Tatum and Brown were declared available and Holiday was listed as out. At this time, Brown is questionable for this game with a right knee posterior impingement. Jrue Holiday will miss a second straight game due to a hamstring strain. I’m guessing that Al Horford will get the start for Holiday and, if Brown can’t play, Sam Hauser will likely get another start.

The Magic have 2 players on the injury list but they have been out long term for them and both will miss the playoffs. Jalen Suggs has been out since March 4 after undergoing successful arthroscopic surgery to remove a cartilage fragment in his left knee. Moritz Wagner has been out since January 9 when he tore the ACL in his left knee. Other than these two, the Magic have a clear injury report. Of course, the Celtics haven’t been playing recklessly and injuring their players either.

Key Matchups

Al Horford vs Paolo Banchero

In Game 1, he finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. He shot 51.9% from the field and 57.1% from beyond the arc. In Game 2 he finished with 32 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 blocks while shooting 48% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Jayson Tatum vs Franz Wagner
Wagner averaged 24.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game in the regular season. He shot 46.3% from the field and 29.5% from beyond the arc. In Game 1, he finished with 23 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks while shooting 41.7% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc. In Game 1, he finished with 4 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 33.3% from the field and went 1-1 from beyond the arc. In Game 2, he finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 1 assist while shooting 75% from the field and he hit all 3 of his threes. In Game 3, Carter finished with 10 points 12 rebounds, 1 assits and 1 block. He shot 50% from the field and went 0-1 on threes. In Game 3 Porzingis struggled on both ends of the floor. Hopefully he can get his game back on track in this one.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- Defense is always the key to winning and even more so in the Playoffs. The Celtics are 4th the playoffs with a defensive rating of 106.0. The Magic are 11th in the playoffs with a defensive rating of 114.2. The Celtics scored just 103 points in Game 1 but they held the Magic to just 86 points. In Game 2, the Magic scored 100 points. The Magic have good defenders and so if the Celtics hope to beat them, they need match Orlando’s defensive intensity and to play tough lock down defense themselves. In Game 3, the Magic scored just 95 points, but held the Celtics to 93. Hopefully, the Magic can defend in this game without injuring another Celtic.

Rebound - As Pat Riley once said, “No rebounds, no rings.” Much of rebounding is effort and hustle and if the Celtics put the extra effort into grabbing rebounds, it usually translates to the rest of their game. The Celtics out-rebounded the Magic 42-41 in Game 1. In Game 2, the Celtics won the rebounding battle 46-34. In Game 3, the Magic out-rebounded the Celtics 42-39. They need to work harder on the boards in this one. The Celtics are 42-7 when tied or out-rebounding their opponents. The Celtics need to out-work the Magic on the boards if they want to win this game.

3 Point Shooting - In the regular season, the Celtics took the most 3’s per game while the Magic allowed the fewest 3’s per game. In the 3 games this season, the Magic held the Celtics to 11.3 fewer 3 point attempts than their average. In Game 1, the Celtics took 37 threes (43.2%) while the Magic took 27 threes (37%) In Game 2, the Celtics took 37 threes (37%) while the Magic took 29 threes (24.2%). In Game 3, the Celtics took just 27 threes (33.3%) while the Magic took 32 threes (25%) The Celtics are tough to beat when they make their 3’s and they struggle when the 3’s aren’t falling. Once again, they have to neutralize the Magic’s tough 3 point defense and at the same time play tough defense against the Magic.

Take Care of the Ball - Normally, this isn’t a problem for the Celtics as they averaged the 2nd fewest turnovers per game in the regular season. They turned the ball over 21 times in Game 3 and the Magic scored 26 points off those turnovers. The Celtics have to stay focused and take better care of the basketball in this game. They have to adjust to the Magic’s full court press and their swarming defense and not get rattled by it.

Everyone Step Up - The Magic have had 2 players carry the load for them in all 3 games so far with minimal help from the rest of the group. The Celtics usually have a more balanced attack with 2 stars leading the way but with the rest of the team stepping up also. The Magic do not have the depth that the Celtics do, even with a starter out. The Celtics have the depth and they need those players to all step up and contribute in this game. In Game 3, only 3 players were in double figures for the Celtics, Tatum, Brown and White. The Celtics need more from the rest of the team in this one.

Play Smart - The Magic have been playing exceedingly physical in the 3 games so far. There have been 3 Celtics injuries from 3 flagrant fouls by the Magic in the 3 games. Jaylen Brown has said the Celtics can fight it out to see who will go to the second round but the Celtics should not fall into that trap. The Magic have used increasing physicality to mask their talent discrepancy. The Celtics need to play their game and fight harder for rebounds, open shots, better defense, and to keep their focus on playing better rather than sinking to the Magic’s level of thuggery.

X-Factors
Road Game
- The Celtics are playing on the road. They are facing distractions of travel and playing in an unfamiliar arena in front of hostile fans. Although, there was a huge contingent of Celtics fans in the arena for Game 3. They need to shake off those distractions and keep their focus on playing the game. The Celtics were historically good on the road this season, going 33-8 on the road. They need to draw on that road warrior mindset to help them get a win in this one.

Injuries - Other than Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics were mostly healthy during last year’s playoffs. They came into Game 1 healthy with just minor questions about Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday. The Celtics won without Jayson Tatum in Game 2 and Jaylen Brown dispelled any questions about his health. The Celtics missed Holiday in Game 3 but both Tatum and Brown looked good. Coming into Game 4, Jaylen Brown (knee) is once again questionable and Jrue Holiday is out with a hamstring strain. The Celtics need to lock into that next man up mentality and pull together to get a win, even if they are missing a starter or two.

Officiating - Officiating can always be an X-Factor. In some games, you don’t even notice the referees and in other games, they seem to make the game all about them. Some crews call the game tight and others let the teams play. Jaylen Brown challenged the refs to get control of the game and keep the Magic from playing so recklessly or there would likely be a fight. The officiating in Game 3 has been controversial as they missed some big calls down the stretch. Hopefully the refs will keep an eye out for reckless play from the Magic in this one and the teams won’t end up fighting.

Official Report
Crew Chief - Marc Davis

Davis has been an official for 27 years. His home win/loss record this year is 34-31. He calls 48.2% of fouls against the road team. The Celtics are 2-3 this season and 10-5 over the past 2 seasons with Davis calling games. The Magic are 2-2 this year and 4-4 over the last 2 years with Davis. In the anonymous player poll last year, 4.6% said that Davis was one of the best refs while 6.8% said he was one of the worst.

Referee - Tyler Ford
Ford has been a ref for 11 years. His home win/loss record is 32-36. He calls 49.3% of fouls on the road team. The Celtics are 2-3 this season and 6-3 over the last 2 years with Ford as a ref. The Magic are 1-4 this year and 4-7 over the past 2 years with Ford. In the player poll, 6.8% of the players felt he was one of the worst refs.

Umpire - Andy Nagy
Nagy has been an official for 6 years. His home win/loss record is 32-34. He calls 48.8%of fouls on the road team. The Celtics are 3-0 this season and 6-0 over the last 2 seasons with Nagy as an official. The Magic are 1-4 this season with Nagy as an official and he didn’t call any games for them last season.

Kristaps Porzingis says it’s a killer instinct. Jayson Tatum just wants to make the right play.

2025 NBA Playoffs - Boston Celtics v Orlando Magic

Tatum erupted for 37 points in the Celtics’ Game 4 against the Magic — leaving his teammates in awe and propelling his team to a commanding 3-1 series lead.

ORLANDO — “MVP! MVP! MVP! The increasingly familiar chants inundated the Kia Center as Jayson Tatum calmly sank two free throws. The Celtics’ star’s scoring total upped to 37 points, as he solidified a critical Game 4 victory against the Orlando Magic. And, in the background, chants that have followed Tatum and the Celtics to arenas across the country once again reverberated.

In a back-and-forth game on Sunday night, the Celtics held a 4-point lead with just under three minutes to go when Tatum hit a contested turnaround jumper over Paolo Banchero’s outstretched arm.

Kristaps Porzingis, who was crashing to the basket in hopes of securing an offensive rebound in the event Tatum’s shot ricocheted off the rim, momentarily reflected on his teammate’s greatness.

“I thought to myself: ‘This guy is special. This guy is special.”

It wasn’t anything new.

Tatum is in the midst of his 8th playoff run, as he pointed out after the win. Sunday marked his 116th postseason game, placing him 15th among active NBA players in playoff games played.

And, he’s just the 7th player in league history to rack up 70 playoff wins by the age of 27.

Still, Tatum now exhibits a level of poise in the clutch that is different. It’s the result of countless battles — today, he’s on the other side of two Finals appearances, five Eastern Conference Finals showings, devastating Game 7 losses, crunch-time victories, and last-second defeats.

So, facing a scrappy and hungry Magic team looking to even the first-round series at two wins apiece, Tatum erupted for 16 points in the fourth quarter.

After the Magic tied things up at 91 with four minutes to go, Tatum poured in 9 in the final three minutes, single-handedly outscoring Orlando the rest of the way.

“The game was on the line, 91-91, four minutes left, time-out — I was excited for that moment, because I knew that we was gonna figure it out and make plays,” Tatum said.

Kristaps Porzingis has observed Tatum’s evolved killer instinct

When Porzingis arrived in Boston last fall, Tatum had yet to win a championship. The then-25-year-old re-lived playoff failures of years past as he pursued his elusive first title, constantly hearing about the shortcomings from his 2022 Finals run.

In June, that run became a distant memory as he hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy.

Fresh off the chip, Tatum led the Celtics to a 61-game season this year, averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and a career-high 6 assists per game. He’s the Celtics’ leader in all of those categories, and a shoo-in First Team All-NBA forward.

Tatum has racked up plenty of big moments in the clutch this season: a game-winner against the Toronto Raptors, and a game-tying three to send an April Knicks game into overtime are just a few.

Last week, he became one of just 12 NBA players to earn votes for the Clutch Player of the Year award.

Porzingis has always known Tatum to be great; when the Latvian center first walked in through the doors of the Auerbach Center, Tatum was already a four-time All-Star and one of the most dominant two-way players in the league.

Still, Porzingis maintains that he’s nonetheless seen him make strides, even since September of 2023.

“He’s developed even more of a killer instinct,” Porzingis said.

I asked Kristaps Porzingis about Jayson Tatum’s willing the Celtics to victory down the stretch:

“The three that he hit towards the end of the game, I thought to myself, ‘This guy is special.’ From when I got here to now, he's developed even more of a killer instinct.” pic.twitter.com/dHFaTcmVEC

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) April 28, 2025

When asked about Porzingis’s comments, Tatum made clear that it’s not his own scoring that he prioritizes — he simply wants to make the right plays in the biggest moments.

“I enjoy being in those moments,” he said. “And [it’s] not necessarily ‘take over a game’ [it’s] being in a position to make the play. I say it all the time. [That can be] for myself, or for a teammate. You just want to be in a position where you’re involved and you've got a part of the action.”

In last year’s playoff run, Tatum’s big-time moments were sometimes assists.

One of the most notable examples came in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pacers, he threw a behind-the-back bounce pass to Al Horford for a massive three with just over a minute to play and the Celtics trailing by 5, a pass that famously spurred Jaylen Brown to say: “Hang it in the f---ing Louvre.”

Still, Porzingis maintains Tatum’s evolved killer instinct is something that he has observed.

“Honestly, you could see his demeanor,” Porzingis said. “He wants the ball toward the end, and we trust him fully.”

Jayson Tatum persevered through a challenging start to the playoffs

Tatum struggled offensively in Game 1, limited to just 17 points on 8-22 shooting by the Magic’s stifling defense. He subsequently missed Game 2 with what Joe Mazzulla described as a “severe” bone bruise on his wrist, his sidelining marking his first-ever playoff absence.

Momentarily, it seemed like Tatum could even miss substantial time.

But, despite being listed as doubtful in the morning, Tatum found a way to play through the bruise on Friday, posting 36 points and 9 rebounds in the Celtics’ loss. After each three he made post-injury, he swung his taped-up wrist over his head, unveiling a new celebration concocted by Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman.

Two days later, Tatum had his biggest game of the postseason, racking up 37 points and 14 rebounds.

“He’s been getting us big buckets in this series, and last year’s playoffs,” Porzingis said. “In the third game, thanks to him, we were right there. And today, again, he was phenomenal.”

In Sunday’s postgame media availability, Jaylen Brown used nearly every question as an opportunity to credit Tatum, pointing out everything from his rebounding to his impact in the final minutes:

“JT had it rolling.”

With just over two minutes left, Banchero fouled Tatum on a three-point attempt. After an unsuccessful challenge by the Magic, Tatum drained three free throws, giving the Celtics their largest lead of the game. It was one of many big-time Tatum moments in the Game 4 victory.

“He’s been leading us,” Porzingis said. “And we expect that from him.”

When Joe Mazzulla was asked about what he saw from Tatum down the stretch, he didn’t hesitate: “Poise.”

That much was obvious to Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley, too.

“You could just tell their experience showed,” Mosley said. “They weren’t rattled at all. They were making big plays on both sides... They were just really sharp.”

Jayson Tatum (quietly) leads the Celtics to a 3-1 first-round lead

It’s well-known that Jayson Tatum isn’t the loudest vocal leader.

He’s not the type to just say, ‘Let’s go,’ Porzingis explained on Sunday.

So, his words carry extra weight when he does address his colleagues.

“Whenever he says something, it makes sense, you know?” Porzingis said. “He has a good basketball mind.”

Jaylen Brown said there’s a level of trust that’s now established between him and Tatum: “We’ve seen a lot. We’ve been through a lot of playoff basketball.”

Jaylen Brown on his chemistry with Jayson Tatum evolving over the years:

“Trust. We’ve seen a lot. We’ve been through a lot of playoff basketball.” pic.twitter.com/Fmoli0Ipu6

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) April 28, 2025

Through their seven playoff runs as a duo, six ended in disappointment.

The sole run that didn’t? That one will live on forever.

The Celtics will now look to become the first NBA team to win consecutive championships since the 2018 Warriors. It’s an uphill battle — they’re 3 wins down, with 13 wins to go, and will have to take care of the Magic on Tuesday to win the first of four playoff series required to repeat.

Fortunately for them, Jayson Tatum might just be in his best form yet.

“I have been there before,” he said. “I have been in these moments.”

On Sunday, that experience helped the Celtics build a commanding 3-1 lead.

Derrick White has been sneaky awesome

2025 NBA Playoffs - Boston Celtics v Orlando Magic - Game Four

Photo by Fernando Medina/NBAE via Getty Images

His fantastic play is flying under the radar.

The first round series between the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic has been chaotic. Jayson Tatum missed the first playoff game of his career, Kristaps Porzingis had his forehead sliced open, Jaylen Brown dislocated his finger, and through it all, Derrick White has been a calming influence.

I can’t call Derrick White’s 18 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds in Game 4 quiet. His fingerprints were all over some of the loudest plays in the Celtics’ win over the Magic, like his layup to put the Celtics up five with 6:21 to go in the game.

Derrick White has an uncanny ability to give the game exactly what it needs. There have been stretches in this series where the Celtics offense has been stuck in the mud, which shouldn’t be a surprise, considering the Orlando Magic had the second overall ranked defense in the regular season. Kristaps Porzingis has been the Celtic most affected by the Magic physical D, so the Celtics responded by opening Game 4 with a little bit of Derrick White-Kristaps Porzingis pick-and-roll magic.

In a series where points are hard to come by in the half court, getting Porzingis going in the half-court was a welcome development. Before Game 4, KP had yet to hit a three-point shot. Guess who fed him for his first trey ball of the post-season? Our good friend, Derrick White

In Game 4, every time the Magic seemed to be creating some momentum, Derrick White was there, as he often is, to ease the tightness of Celtic fans’ sphincters worldwide. Back breaking three point shots have become a D White staple. Game 4 was no different, with D White popping off for two threes late in the game.

Derrick has been so reliable, and hit so many big shots over the last two seasons, that it was hard to believe he actually missed a three-pointer in the fourth quarter of Game 4.

In Game 2, Jaylen Brown stole the headlines for his monstrous performance. Rightly so, as JB poured in 36 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. After Game 4, Jayson Tatum was the headliner. Rightly so, as JT closed the game with 16 fourth-quarter points. Derrick was able to steal a couple of headlines after Game 1 for drilling seven three-pointers. But Derrick has been sprinkling his Derrick White pixie dust over every game in this first round series, giving the Celtics a little bit of everything. For the series, White is averaging 20.3 points, 5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, on 66.9% true shooting. Elite production, as per usual.

Celtics win 120-89 over Magic in Game 5, end series 4-1

NBA: Playoffs-Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics

David Butler II-Imagn Images

After trailing at the half, the floodgates opened for Jayson Tatum and Boston in the second half as they advance in 5 games.

Boston returned home to TD Garden Tuesday night for Game 5 after going 1-1 in Orlando. Boston who has been physically challenged all series by the Magic, weathered a strong Orlando first-half performance to storm back in the second and secure a dominant 120-89 win in front of a rowdy home crowd headlined by Jayson Tatum’s big 35-point night.

Boston has been rolling with a shortened rotation of just 8 players the last few games, with Jrue Holiday ruled out once again. Fans expected to see plenty of Luke Kornet, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser as Al Horford stayed in the starting lineup.

Jaylen Brown opened up the scoring on the night with a fourteen-foot jumper that was quickly followed up by a long two-pointer from Al Horford. Boston was up 4-0 early before Paolo Banchero got the Magic on the scoreboard. Wagner then drove into the key to dunk for his first score to keep things tied 4-4.

Kristaps Porzingis was effective to start Game 5, hitting on a turnaround jumper, then flashing into the key for a layup. The Magic were active on the glass to start the game, keeping the ball alive and creating plenty of second-chance looks. Joe Mazzulla called his team’s first timeout at the 6 and a half minute mark with scores knotted at eight all.

Tatum remained scoreless until the 8-minute mark, as it was the Magic who looked the more comfortable team on the road taking an early 9-point early lead as KCP hit on consecutive triples to silence the Boston crowd.

Tatum was assisting at a rapid pace to start the game as he drove and dished for his fifth of the night on a Luke Kornet layup. Banchero then rattled in his first three-pointer of the night, as the Magic pushed it out to a 24-15 lead.

Tatum got to the elbow and hit his third basket of the game, a turnaround elbow jumper, to stop the Magic run. Gary Harris hit his first shot of the night with the clock expiring in the first quarter, Magic up by four, 27-23.

The start of the second quarter was not great for Boston, as it was the Magic outhustling the Celtics to stretch the lead back to nine. Boston eventually got the scoreboard with a Kristaps three-point play off a Derrick White inbounds pass.

The Magic’s Franz Wagner was scoring at will throughout the first half, attacking Boston’s rim relentlessly; the German wing had 13 points in the first 13 minutes of the game. Boston picked up the pace around the midway point of the second as Jaylen Brown and Derrick White attacked the basket to get the score back to three, 38-35.

Boston started the game scoreless from three as the Orlando D was spread well beyond the C’s three-point arc. Al Horford looked to break the drought for Boston, but his corner shot was ruled a two-pointer by the referees as Big Al had a foot on the line. A loud two-handed Jaylen Brown dunk in transition saw the Boston crowd rise in unison.

Boston managed to get the scores level at one point, but the young Magic team continued to work harder on both ends than the home team. Jayson Tatum dunked it home to end the first half for Boston, 49-47. The Celtics would go scoreless from beyond the arc in the 1st half for the first time since October 2021.

Paolo Banchero picked up his fourth foul of the game early in the third quarter and was visibly upset. JT eventually scored the first three-pointer of the night for Boston as he converted over an outstretched Paolo Banchero. That bucket was immediately followed by a solid Jaylen Brown drive in which Banchero was whistled for his fifth foul of the night and a seat on the Orlando bench with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

Jaylen Brown’s fourteenth point of the night came on finger roll layup as the home team went on a 8-0 run to retake the lead. Both teams continue to engage in a physical play in the third, highlighting the intensity of this physical series. The pace really slowed down in the third as both teams settled into a physical and slow pace of play. Jaylen Brown fed Kristaps in the low block who was fouled and converted both free throws for his ninth point of the night.

Boston take Game 5 fueled by a dominant second half performance, Payton Pritchard scored on driving layup as time expired on a broken Boston play with four minutes to go in the quarter. Jayson Tatum hit on his second three-pointer and hit a pair of free-throws as Boston stretched the lead to ten points, 70-60.

Sam Hauser became the first Celtic to hit a three outside of Tatum for Boston, Al Horford got in on the act also, as the Celtics opened up a 14-point lead with a minute to go in the third.

The flood gates well and truly opened for the team in green as Jayson Tatum hit his third three of the night as Banchero and Wagner looked on from the Orlando bench.

With a huge 19-point advantage, 83-62, going into the final quarter, the Celtics totally changed the course of the game in the third quarter. The Magic were only able to score 13 points in the third quarter while the Celtics scored 36 points.

Pritchard hit a pair of three-pointers to open up the fourth quarter as the Celtics fans went giddy at TD Garden. Boston’s lead stayed steady at around 20 plus points all through the fourth as the Orlando players and staff started to think about their holiday plans, staring at first round exit.

The Orlando Magic eventually waved the white flag, as they cleared the benches with 3 and a half minutes to go in the game. The final score would be 120-89, Jayson Tatum led all Celtics with 35 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds, Jaylen Brown had 23 points and Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser had 10 points each.

Boston advance to the second round of the 2025 playoffs and now await the eventual winner of the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons series.

Joe Mazzulla gives update on Jrue Holiday’s hamstring injury

Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals

Holiday missed the Celtics’ last three playoff games with a right hamstring strain.

BOSTON — The Celtics were without Jrue Holiday as they closed out their first-round series against the Orlando Magic. Holiday missed the final three games of the playoffs with a right hamstring strain after excelling in Games 1 and 2.

He travelled with the team to Orlando and was questionable ahead of Game 3, but was ruled out of Games 4 and 5 a day in advance.

Joe Mazzulla was asked about Holiday’s status in his weekly radio appearance on 98.5 on Zolak and Bertrand on Wednesday, and he shared that the two-time All-Star is improving.

“He’s day-to-day,” Mazzulla said. “He’s working his ass off to get back there for us. It’s good that we were able to kind of take care of business to get guys extra time to rest. He’s working as hard as he can to get back, he’s day-to-day. He’ll continue to get better.”

The Celtics have five days off before they begin their next round of the playoffs. They’ll host either the Detroit Pistons or the New York Knicks on Monday, May 5th.

“Jrue’s a tough guy, and I know he’ll do whatever it takes to put himself, and our team, in a position to win,” Mazzulla said. “And he’ll also do what’s best for him. He’s getting better and better each day, and we’ll see how he progresses.”

Other Celtics have stepped up with Jrue Holiday sidelined

Without Holiday, Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley praised Payton Pritchard for stepping up defensively.

“I felt like Payton, all series, his ball pressure, his impact was noticeable,” Al Horford said. “He was just trying to find ways to impact the game, to impact winning. Payton was key for us there.”

In an interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin ahead of Game 5, Derrick White noted that there’s no replacing the All-Defensive guard.

But, with Holiday indefinitely sidelined, everyone will have to try.

“Obviously, defensively, he does so much for us, and you can’t really replace that,” White said. “But even offensively, just having another playmaker out there and someone that can just make the defense pay whenever he has an opportunity. Everyone has to step up.”

Final thoughts from the Magic series

2025 NBA Playoffs - Boston Celtics v Orlando Magic - Game Four

Photo by Fernando Medina/NBAE via Getty Images

One last look back at the first round before the Celtics move on.

Well, that was fun, wasn’t it?

Note: It wasn’t very fun and our players got beat up way too much for a first round matchup. However, the Celtics got the job done and advanced to the next round. Before we put Disney World in the rear view, here are a few scattered thoughts from the series.

The Orlando Magic provided an excellent early test for this group. I respect them for playing hard and not backing down from the challenge. It did get pretty chippy there for a bit but that happens in the playoffs. With only 2 viable offensive options, they needed to muck it up to have any chance. I’m not sure if I could point to any one play that felt outright dirty. It was more the cumulative effect of all the aggressively physical plays. It felt like a 90’s throwback and as much as I love that era, the basketball watching experience was challenging at times.

What is somewhat worrying is the fact that Orlando’s defense was able to get Boston out of their usual offense for long stretches of games. They didn’t have the offense to fully take advantage, but if we peak ahead to a potential matchup with the Thunder, you can expect more of the same (with an offense that could very much take advantage). But let’s get there first.

It was encouraging, however, to see our stars step up into the moment when they were needed. The Magic took away most of our best options and both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown just figured out ways to thrive and drive this team to wins.

On the other side, I’ve always enjoyed Paolo Banchero’s game, but it is hard to walk away from this series with anything but more respect for him. He just moves far faster than you would expect someone his size to move. A half step down was Franz Wagner, who dazzled with repeated off balance, leaning sideways, floating shots over our centers that somehow found the bottom of the net. He’s going to need to figure out the hitch in his jumpshot to be truly next level, but he’s a very good 2nd option. Could be an even better 3rd option if they can bring in anyone this summer. (Or I’ve seen at least one suggestion that he could be a trade piece if they bid on Giannis this summer).

I’m happy that the Celtics get a few days off to recover. Tatum missed a game with the wrist, Jrue missed a few games with the hamstring, Jaylen has his ongoing pain tolerance thing going on, and Porzingis needed more stitches than Frankenstein. Get them all some home cooking and maybe a spa day or something.

I could go on about all the great performances from Tatum, Brown, and the rest, but we cover that elsewhere on the blog. On to the next round. Where hopefully we can get back to launching a record number of 3 pointers with awesome efficiency.

Celtics fans would prefer to play the Knicks

Boston Celtics v New York Knicks

They might just get their wish

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Boston Celtics fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Celtics took care of business in 5 games but we are waiting for the result of the Knicks - Pistons series to see who our opponent will be. We asked fans to choose who they would rather play and the majority of fans want to play the Knicks.

In the season series, the Celtics beat the Knicks in all 4 contests. They were also pretty good against the Pistons, finishing 3-1 for the season.

While the Knicks seemed to set up their team specifically to stop the Celtics. They have the high end talent, multiple wing defenders, and a highly respected head coach. However, they just haven’t had a lot of answers for Boston this year.

The Pistons don’t have as much talent on paper, but they are a young, up-and-coming team that don’t seem afraid of the moment. Cade Cunningham in particular seems like a star in the making.

Note: I’m typing this as I watch the first half of game 6, which the Knicks hold the lead in thus far. So by the time you read this we might already know our opponent. So feel free to use the space below to make your early predictions for the next round.

Joe Mazzulla previews Celtics-Knicks playoff matchup and keys to limiting Jalen Brunson

New York Knicks v Boston Celtics

The Celtics and Knicks are set to face off on Monday for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Celtics are set to face the Knicks in the second round of the NBA playoffs, and though the Celtics swept the four-game matchup in the regular season, Joe Mazzulla told reporters that doesn’t necessarily put them at an advantage heading into the postseason.

“Every game takes on a life of its own,” Mazzulla said. “Every series takes on a life of its own. Right now, the series is 0-0. It’s two good teams getting ready to play.”

Derrick White echoed his coach’s sentiments: “Everything we did in the regular season doesn’t really mean a whole lot.”

The Celtics head coach made clear that once again, the playoff series will come down to the margins.

“You have to be able to defend without fouling, rebound, take care of the ball, execute, be able to get to different stuff defensively, because of their ability to put pressure on the rim and get great shots,” he said.

New York’s biggest offensive weapons

The Knicks’ offense will be a change of pace from the Celtics’ first-round series against Orlando. The Knicks had the fifth-best offensive rating during the regular season (117.3) while the Magic had the 27th-best rating (109.1).

“Their offensive numbers are better,” Mazzulla said. “Their ability to change defenses is good. They have two guys that can score at all three levels. They got role guys that could really impact the game.”

The Knicks had five players average in the double-figures in their six-game first-round playoff series against the Detroit Pistons: Jalen Brunson (31.5 points), Karl Anthony-Towns (19.7 points), OG Anunoby (17.3 points), Mikal Bridges (16.2 points), and Josh Hart (11.8 points).

“Great coach, great depth, great team,” Mazzulla said. “You see what they’ve been able to do over the course of the season, and in the playoffs thus far, with their two guys — but also the way that the others are able to impact the game.”

While New York was swept by Boston during the season, they nonetheless had the league’s fifth-best record during the regular season, finishing the year 51-31.

“It’s the playoffs,” White said. “They’re here for a reason. They’re really good team, and it’s gonna be a big challenge.”

The challenge of limiting Jalen Brunson

Mazzulla recognizes that limiting Jalen Brunson could be one of the series’s greatest challenges. Brunson, who was named the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year, has shouldered the offensive load down for the Knicks down the stretch of games, exploding for 40 points in the clinching Game 6, plus the game-winner.

— NBA (@NBA) May 2, 2025

Brunson averaged 31.5 points (on 43.6% shooting and 33.3% from three) alongside 8.2 assists and 4 rebounds in the first round of the playoffs against Detroit, and Mazzulla said that limiting him will be a full-team effort.

“You can’t do it with one guy, right?” he said. “It takes a team — takes different matchups, takes different coverages, but there’s got to be a level of physicality, a level of discipline, a level of attention to detail on tendencies at the same time.”

Some of Brunson’s scoring is controllable, Mazzulla said, but some, the Celtics will just have to live with.

“If you add up all the points, there are a number of points to which you can work to be disciplined and work to control,” he said. “At the same time, he’s a great player, and he’s going to make plays.”

Jrue Holiday remains day-to-day with hamstring injury

Mazzulla said that Jrue Holiday, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring strain, remains day-to-day.

So a return for Monday’s Game 1 against the Knicks is not out of the question.

.@realbobmanning asked Joe Mazzulla about whether Jrue Holiday is on track to play Monday:

“Day-to-day. Just getting better every day, doing whatever he can to make sure he puts himself in position to come back as fast as he can. He’s working hard.” pic.twitter.com/UU4VgAa4Ry

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) May 2, 2025

In the meantime, Holiday and the rest of the Celtics are still using the time to prepare for the next round, regardless of whether or not they are actually practicing.

“There’s always ways to get better, whether it’s on the practice court, whether it’s in the film room, whether it’s on walkthroughs, whether it’s getting up and down,” Mazzulla said. “You just have to take it, take advantage of all the ways you could learn and institute a game plan. It’s the playoffs. No one’s 100%.”

As the Celtics prepare for the next round, the message remains the same despite the changing opponent.

“You still have to rebound, you have to take care of the basketball,” Mazzulla said. “You have to be able to defend without fouling. You have to execute. You have to set good screens. You have to sprint in transition. You have to get to the corners. You have to sprint back. You have to keep it 5-on-5. You have to protect the paint. Have to box out. All those details are super important.”

Jaylen Brown shares encouraging injury update at Celtics practice

Brown said he’s trending toward 100% after averaging 23 points per game on high efficiency in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

BOSTONJaylen Brown shared a positive injury update after the Celtics’ practice on Saturday, noting that he’s trending toward 100% after battling a knee injury in the second half of the season.

“I think I’m starting to turn the curve,” Brown said. “Structurally, everything is fine. I’ve had some other stuff going on, but I think I’m kind of trending in the right direction.”

Brown had an elite first-round series, averaging 23 points on 49.4% shooting — including 44.4% from three and 84.4% from the line. His best game came in Game 2, in which he exploded for 36 points on 12-19 shooting with Jayson Tatum sidelined.

“He’s just been tremendous in all areas,” Mazzulla said after the series ended. “And again, he has the ability to take it to another level — mentally and physically.”

Jrue Holiday remains day-to-day after missing three games

Jrue Holiday, meanwhile, remains day-to-day with a right hamstring strain that held him out of the final three games of the first round of the playoffs.

Holiday practiced on Friday, as seen in a video clip the Celtics posted, and Joe Mazzulla had a positive injury update on him too.

New York Knicks (0-0) at Boston Celtics (0-0) Round 2 Game 1 5/5/25

Boston Celtics v New York Knicks

The Celtics begin Round 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals by hosting the New York Knicks, renewing one of the oldest rivalries in the league.

The Celtics begin the Eastern Conference Semifinals by hosting the division rival New York Knicks. The Celtics were 4-0 this season against the Knicks. The Celtics began the season with a 132-109 win in Boston on opening night. They won 131-104 on February 8 in New York. They won 118-105 on February 23 in Boston. Finally, they won 119-117 in overtime on April 8 in New York.

Last season, the Celtics won the series between these two teams4-1. They won the first 4 games (2 in Boston and 2 in New York) and lost just their final meeting at Boston. They played one extra game due to the in-season tournament. In the regular season, the Celtics are 308-190 overall all time vs the Knicks and they are 179-129 in games played in Boston.

When Celtics rivals are mentioned, usually teams like the Lakers, Heat and Sixers come to mind first, but the New York and Boston rivalry is one of the longest running rivalries in the NBA. The Celtics and the Knicks both were founded in 1946 and they are the only two remaining original teams in the NBA that are still in their original cities and with their same nicknames.

These two teams have met in the playoffs 15 times with the Celtics winning 8 of those series and the Knicks winning 7 of those series. They first met in the playoffs in 1951 when the Knicks won the series 2-0. This is the first time they are meeting in the playoffs since 2013. It is the first time since 1984 that they are meeting past the first round.

The Celtics won their first round series 4-1 over the Orlando Magic. They were plagued by injuries in that series. Jrue Holiday missed the last 3 games of the series and Jayson Tatum missed Game 2 due to a bone bruise in his wrist. Jaylen Brown played in every game, but was hampered by a bone bruise in his knee and a dislocated finger. Kristaps Porzingis was elbowed in the forehead and received 5 stitches. They have been off since Tuesday for some much needed rest and healing.

The Knicks won their series over the Pistons 4-2. That series was hard fought but it wasn’t nearly as physical as the Celtics-Magic series was. The Knicks won Games 1, 3, 4 and 6 and the Pistons won Games 2 and 5 at New York and the Knicks won Games 3, 4 and 6 in Detroit. They closed out their series on Thursday and so they had a few days rest also.

Thanks, in part, to having 5 days off for the Celtics and 3 days off for the Knicks before the start of this series, the injury list for both teams is clear with no injuries to report for either team. Jrue Holiday, who missed the last 3 games of the First Round with a hamstring strain went through full practices and is ready to play in this game. Jaylen Brown said he is close to 100% as Game 1 approaches. Jayson Tatum has been playing through a bone bruise in his wrist and will continue to do so in this game.

Key Matchups

Jrue Holiday vs Jalen Brunson

Knicks’ All Star Jalen Brunson was 5th in MVP voting last season. He was voted Clutch Player of the Year this season. In Round 1, he averaged 31.5 points, 4 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game. He is shot 43.6% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. In 4 games against the Celtics this season, he averaged 26.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 52.8% from the field and 43.3% from beyond the arc. Slowing him down needs to be a priority.

Kristaps Porzingis vs Karl-Anthony Towns
Towns gives the Knicks a strong presence in the paint along with the ability to spread the floor. In the first round, he averaged 19.7 points, 10 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He is shot 48.9% from the field and 48% from beyond the arc. In 4 games against the Celtics this season, he averaged 19.8 points, 12 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 53.4% from the field and 63.6% from beyond the arc.

Honorable Mention
Jayson Tatum vs OG Anunoby

In the first round, Anunoby averaged 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 2.5 steals per game. He is shot 42.4% from the field and 35.1% from beyond the arc. In 3 games against the Celtics this season he averaged 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal per game while shooting just 29.6% from the field and 13.3% from beyond the arc. Anunoby is also a very good defender and will make it harder for the Celtics to score.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- Defense is the key to winning every game. Defense is important in the regular season, but even more so in the playoffs. In the first round, the Celtics had a defensive rating of 103.8 (3rd) while the Knicks had a defensive rating of 109.4 (5th). The Knicks scored 108.6 points per game (6th) while the Celtics scored 106.4 points per game (10th). In the first round, the Celtics attempted just 31.2 threes per game (12th)while the Knicks attempted just 30.2 threes (14th). Without the Magic’s defense that is designed to limit 3 point shots, we should see the Celtics shoot more 3’s as they did in the regular season. They need to play tough, lock down defense in this game and limit the Knicks offense both in the paint and on the perimeter.

Rebound - The Celtics can’t score if they don’t have the ball, and the best way to get the ball is to grab rebounds. The Celtics need to rebound as a team with every Celtic battling on the boards. It will take a team effort to beat the Knicks on the boards. The Celtics were 9th in the first round with 42.2 rebounds per game, while the Knicks 11th with 40.0 rebounds per game. The Celtics must put in extra effort to crash the boards and beat the Knicks to rebounds. The Celtics are 44-7 when tied or out-rebounding their opponents. It’s not a coincidence that the game they lost to the Magic was the one they were out-rebounded in.

Move the Ball Carefully - The Celtics need to move the ball in order to find the best shot on each possession. When the ball sticks and players try to do too much, the Celtics struggle. They are at their best when they pass the ball and keep it moving. But they have to make careful passes and not get sloppy because the Knicks average 17.2 points off turnovers per game (5th).

Play All Out 48 Minutes - When the Celtics lost this season, it was usually because they didn’t play as hard as their opponents. They can’t afford to allow the Knicks to play harder than them if they want to win this game. They have to play hard from the opening tip until the final buzzer and not allow the Knicks to out-work them for any stretch during the game. The Celtics shouldn’t let up on their effort because they have beaten the Knicks 4 times in the regular season. The Knicks are a dangerous team and will beat the Celtics if they don’t take them seriously and play hard from the opening tip until the final buzzer.

X-Factors
Home Game
- Both teams are well rested, although the Celtics have been off a couple more days than the Knicks. The Celtics need to take advantage of home court and the boost their fans can give them. The Knicks will face a hostile crowd and an unfamiliar arena along with travel which will hopefully give the Celtics the edge. Teams play all season for home court and the Celtics need to take advantage of playing on their home court.

Officiating - Officiating always has the potential to be an x-factor. Each officiating crew calls the game differently. Some refs call it tight and constantly call fouls while others let them play with few fouls called. Some refs just make terrible head-scratching calls. The Celtics need to adjust to how the refs are calling the game and not allow bad calls or no calls to take away their focus.

Official Report

Sam Hauser injury update: what we know about Celtics guard’s ankle sprain

Magic’s physical play poses no issue for Celtics in Game 5 as they advance to second round

The Celtics sharpshooter sprained his right ankle while fouling Knicks wing OG Anunoby on a three-point attempt.

BOSTON — Sam Hauser sprained his right ankle late in the third quarter of the Celtics’ Game 1 matchup against the Knicks, and never returned. He was limping by the locker room postgame, but was not using crutches when seen by reporters.

The ankle injury occurred when Hauser fouled Knicks forward OG Anunoby on a three-point attempt with 29 seconds left in the third quarter. He immediately crouched on the ground in pain and was helped to the locker room by Celtics trainer Drew Moore shortly after.

Sam Hauser’s ankle injury occurred after a first-half DNP

Hauser did not play in the first half of Monday’s game. He checked in with 4:26 left in the third quarter, and the Celtics were ultimately outscored by 7 in his minutes.

Upon checking in, he missed both of his three-point attempts, airballing his first corner attempt.

Hauser was one of two Celtics rotation players to prematurely leave Monday’s game. Kristaps Porzingis left the game midway through the second quarter with what the Celtics have described as a non-COVID illness.

Neither player returned, and both players’ statuses are in question heading into Wednesday’s Game 2. When Joe Mazzulla addressed reporters postgame, he said he had yet to speak to either player.

If Hauser is unable to return for Game 2, the Celtics’ bench would take a significant hit. The Celtics’ sharpshooter averaged 8.5 points per game on 45.1% shooting in 21.7 minutes for the Celtics this season, including hitting 41.6% from three.

Why I’m not worried about the Celtics after Game 1 loss

Boston Celtics v Houston Rockets

The Knicks didn’t figure anything special out in Game 1. They just got lucky, and luck tends to run out.

This is probably the only time in my life I will ever say this, so savor it: Colin Cowherd is actually right about something with the Boston Celtics. Well, partially right. On Tuesday, he confidently stated that he’s “never seen a Game 1 upset that means less. This is the only game the Knicks are going to win.”

Now, I won’t go as far as to say the Knicks won’t win another game — they certainly could, because it’s playoff basketball and anything can happen. However, New York didn’t figure anything novel out in the series opener; in fact, luck was actually the most significant factor in their upset. And if their luck runs out, which it often does, we’ll look back on this first game as a complete and utter anomaly that means close to nothing.

Live or die by the three

The Celtics had seemingly quieted the “they shoot too many threes” crowd with last year’s championship, but those people have unsurprisingly come out of the woodworks after a game in which Boston missed 45 threes.

Following a series against the Magic in which their main offensive strategy — volume three-point shooting — was largely taken away (they didn’t shoot more than 37 threes in a game against Orlando), the Celtics got up 60 long balls in Game 1 and they only made 15 of them.

Sure, some of the looks were a bit quick — likely because Boston was excited the three-point line was no longer being guarded like it was actually worth 6 points — but Game 1 was full of high quality shots. Of the 60 threes they took, 56 of them were either open or wide open, and they made a horrid 25% of those (they usually make 38%).

Jrue Holiday summed it up perfectly:

“Lot of shots that felt like we make all the time — lot of wide-open threes, off of offensive rebounds… lot of good shots we wish would have fell. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to keep on shooting.”

The truth is that the Knicks got lucky. They didn’t do anything to effectively take away the three-point line, and Boston got the types of shots they were looking for and have been looking for all year. Sure, the C’s could’ve driven the ball a bit more and gotten into their offense slightly quicker, but New York didn’t find out some sort of defensive strategy that’s going to work against the best offensive team in the league (much like Orlando did with their switching and no-help principles). Instead, they just got bailed out by the Celtics shooting about as poorly as they can.

I won’t bore you with every single good, quality shot that missed, but here are some examples of excellent looks that just didn’t fall.

This is typical Celtics’ offense. Brunson is too small, so NY is forced to bring help, and Boston swings the ball to find a wide open three-point shooter. Can’t run it any better than that — you’re just going to miss sometimes.

Again, the Knicks are in rotation and White gets an awesome look at a three. Boston has to live with those, because they’ll go in at a high enough rate in the long run. Water always finds its level.

One more here. Another attack of too-small Brunson which results in a wonderful look for Derrick.

You can find lots more like these. Monday was littered with quality shots, they just didn’t go in. New York can win another game like this, but it’ll be because Boston misses a bunch of makeable shots, not because the Knicks force them to do something they don’t want to do. The Celtics have the ability to dictate what shots they’re going to get, and that’s how they can level up in game two.

Catch 22 for the Knicks

For large portions of Game 1, the Knicks switched everything. It’s what Orlando did (pretty successfully), so they gave it a shot. The problem is that they don’t have the defensive personnel to do it effectively.

If they’re going to switch Brunson onto the Jays, it’s going to be barbecue chicken. He’s too little to guard them and taking a charge is his only hope. Sure, he might get one or two, but the best wing duo in the league will figure it out. Boston needs to continue to go at this matchup, especially in the post.

They also attacked the KAT switch, but not as effectively. The Jays settled for threes against him rather than using their quickness to drive by him. I think that’ll be the most significant adjustment we see in game two — attacking Towns’ feet on the perimeter.

This is probably a settle, so I would like to see Tatum be a little bit more aggressive. He’s going to get by Towns, which is going to force help, which is going to lead to open threes and driving closeouts, which is going to lead to even more open threes. Celtics basketball.

If the Knicks don’t want to switch, they can go to their base drop coverage against the pick and roll — a coverage that the Celtics completely annihilated in their four regular season matchups. Tatum and Brown attacking KAT downhill in space? Yes, please. No matter what they do, Boston will be getting great looks, and there’s nothing NY can do about it.

Game 2 will be lots of the same for the Celtics. Some small adjustments on the margins — like being more aggressive attacking KAT on switches — will certainly help, but we’re not going to go away from what got us here. And, more likely than not, the Knicks won’t get that lucky again. More threes will fall, I promise.

Kristaps Porzingis reveals illness struggles after stunning Celtics loss to Knicks

NBA: Playoffs-New York Knicks at Boston Celtics

Porzingis was limited to 14 minutes in the Celtics’ Game 2 loss. Afterwards, he shared just how difficult this latest bout of illness has been.

BOSTON — Kristaps Porzingis struggled through illness in the Celtics’ 91-90 loss to the Knicks, limited to just 14 minutes off the bench two nights after he exited in the second quarter of Game 1.

“I’m just not feeling my best — not feeling my best at all,” Porzingis said after the Game 2 loss. “It just kills me inside it’s happening in this moment.”

“It just kills me inside.”

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) May 8, 2025

Joe Mazzulla shared at practice on Tuesday that Porzingis has been dealing with linger symptoms from an illness that kept him out of 11 games in late February and early March.

“Since he came back, he’s kind of been dealing with it — working through it, fighting through it, doing the best he can,” Mazzulla said. “And I think it was just too much for him in that game. He had been working through it since he’s gotten back, and he’s done a great job of being available. It was just hard for him to continue yesterday.”

And, while Porzingis was ultimately able to go on Wednesday, his minutes and impact were both severely limited.

“What I’m super appreciative about is the support that I have inside — also probably from the fans — but especially here, inside the organization, and having this tough moment for me to not be able to be with the guys,” Porzingis said. “It’s not no injury or nothing, but just not feeling my best. It’s tough for me, honestly, but who cares? Nobody feels sorry for us, sorry for me, and we have to keep going.”

Porzingis said what he was currently experiencing was “probably” connected to the upper respiratory illness he dealt with in late February.

“I’ve had ups and downs throughout until this point,” Porzingis said. “Just had a big crash. Now, my energy, everything hasn’t been good. But, who cares? I have to look forward. It will get better from this point on.”

Porzingis scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was just the fifth time in his career that he came off the bench.
