SAN FRANCISCO — When the Celtics face the Warriors on Wednesday, Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis could both face the Celtics for the very first time since their respective tenures in Boston ended last summer.

Porzingis is questionable to play against the Celtics as he continues to deal with a left Achilles tendon injury, while Horford is good to go.

How Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis have fared this season

Al Horford signed a two-year contract with the Warriors in free agency, while Kristaps Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a cost-cutting move.

Now, both Celtics champions will lace up against their former squad.

Both players have had somewhat underwhelming years by their own standards.

Horford is averaging 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game, while shooting 42.9% from the field and 33.8% from three. He dealt with sciatica early in the season, ultimately appearing in just 34 of the Warriors’ 55 games.

Porzingis has yet to make his Warriors debut, but he averaged 17.1 points in 17 games for the Atlanta Hawks. Porzingis was traded to the Warriors ahead of the trade deadline after an injury-riddled first-half of the season. While the Celtics and Hawks faced off twice before the trade deadline, Porzingis did not lace up for either game.

While Porzingis is questionable to play, it seems likely he’ll be suiting up. At the Warriors’ practice on Wednesday, Porzingis indicated he’s likely to make his Warriors debut on Thursday against his former squad, per the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

“It’s gonna be weird, especially the first game back against Boston,” Porzingis said, per Washburn. “It’s gonna be cool, seeing all the guys again.”

Horford, meanwhile, is not on the injury report for the Warriors and thus should be good to go.

Both the Celtics, Warriors are missing key stars

For the Warriors, Jimmy Butler is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, while Seth Curry (left sciatic nerve irritation) and Steph Curry (right patellofemoral pain) are also both out.

For the Celtics, the only player on the injury report is Jayson Tatum, who has yet to play this season as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Tatum’s potential return continues to loom, but he said last week he has yet to make a decision about lacing up this season.

The Warriors (29-26) currently hold the Western Conference’s 8th-best record, while the Celtics (35-19) have the East’s second-best record.

Celtics survive late scare against Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis, beat Warriors 121-110

The Boston Celtics returned to the court after the All Star break Thursday night, to face the eighth placed Golden State Warriors. Boston won their first game of a four-game West Coast road trip as they survived a late scare but dominated the Warriors through three quarters, 121-110. Brown had a triple double after just three quarters, Pritchard and Hauser combined for 42 points for Boston.

The Warriors came into the game without Steph Curry, Seth Curry and Jimmy Butler and started with a lineup of Pat Spencer, De’Anthony Melton, Myles Moody, Gui Santos and Draymond Green. Former C’s front court pairing of Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford started on the opposing bench after departing the C’s last summer. Boston rolled with the post deadline lineup of White, Brown, Hauser, Scheierman and Queta once again.

Moses Moody hit the game’s first bucket on a triple, Boston in the road green uniforms went inside on the first play to Queta as he rolled to bucket and drew a foul. With Ron Harper Jr. and Jaylen Brown the only Celtics active during All Star festivities, the rest of the squad had several days off. Brown knifed past three Warrior defenders to hit on his first layup with the left hand.

Hauser hit his first triple for Boston from the top of the key, Scheierman nailed a three of his own as Boston went up 11-10 early. Derrick White hit a mid range jumper then cut to the basket for a layup as the pace was high early. Boston up 17-15 shooting 54% percent at the first timeout in San Francisco.

Al Horford and Nikola Vucevic were the first big men off the bench for both teams. Ron Harper Jr. hit a corner triple from the bench, fresh off his All Star weekend appearance. Baylor Scheierman stole the ball at halfcourt and went all the way to the cup for his fifth point of the game.

Payton Pritchard once again came off the bench to spark the C’s, he had a killer crossover straight out of Tim Hardaway’s playbook for his first score of the night as he went all the way for a layup. Jordan Walsh had back-to-back baskets with 5 quick points, Boston with the early 33-23 lead.

gettyimages-2262016642.jpg

Boston young legs of Harper, Walsh gave the C’s a big spark late in the first quarter, the pair combined for 11 first quarter points. The Warriors were gunning all quarter, going 8-17 from three, but it was Boston with a well rounded team performance, to lead 36-32 at the first break.

Vooch hit his first shot from a corner three to start the second quarter. Gonazalez splashed home his corner triple attempt in front of the C’s bench as Boston once again had a ten-point lead. Hugo batted away a pass attempt as Boston reclaimed possession. Pritchard and Gonzalez spearheading a quick 13-2 run to start the second quarter.

Sam Hauser threaded the needle to Vooch who was rewarded for running the court for the jam as Boston had a 19-point lead in a dominant second quarter performance. Godlen State had just 2 points in the second quarter until the seven minute mark. Al Horford got whistled for throwing a stray elbow toward rookie Hugo Gonzalez. The play was reviewed first then challenged, Boston winning the challenge and regaining possession.

Brown drove with a sweet crossover and had Santos draped all over his arm to score his twelfth point of the night and get an extra from the stripe with three minutes to go in the half. Pritchard hit a long bomb from deep as Boston regained an eighteen point lead.

gettyimages-2262020940.jpg

KP hit his first three-pointer for the Warriors, but Hauser matched him with a three-pointer of his own as the Celtics were proving too much for the home team to handle behind 19 first half assists. Boston ended the half with back-to-back triples by Hauser and Pritchard as the C’s took a 23-point lead into halftime, 74-51.

Queta hit a rolling layup to start the third, the Portuguese bigman caught a pass off a bobbled ball that hit a Warrior defender’s head. Hauser drained his fourth three and Brown hit a reverse layup as they were rolling to start the second half. The C’s raced out to a 31-point lead before half the San Fran fans had even returned to their seats after halftime. JB was on triple dub alert with a 20 minutes to go in the game

Joe Mazzulla went to his bench depth with a thirty point lead at the five minute mark of the third. Pritchard, Vucevic and Harper Jr off the bench for Boston. Vuc immediately impacted game, blocking a shot and hitting a bank shot form the low block down the other end. Gonzalez entered the game and had a great drive and left hand finish with a pretty ISO dribble on a close out.

Pritchard’s splashed home his fourth triple of the night came off a JB assist as he logged a triple double with 17, 11 and 10 with two minutes to go in the third. Moody drained a pair of triples late in the quarter, yet the Celtics held onto a massive lead a quarter to go in the game, Boston up by 29 points 102-73.

Golden State cut the Boston lead back to 20 points as Joe rested the starters at the start the fourth quarter. Scheierman stopped the bleeding for Boston as the points had dried up for the visitors. Joe Mazzulla got Jaylen Brown back into the game with six minutes to go in the contest holding a 17-point lead.

Santos drained a triple to cut the lead to 14 points. Pritchard was stripped at mid court and then turned it over a second time as the Golden State crowd found their voice. It was Pritchard who made a pair fo tough contested triples as Boston hit 117 points with four minutes remaining in the game. The points dried up for Boston in the fourth as Golden State ratcheted up the pressure.

Jaylen Brown’s turnaround jumper on the bass line was his 23rd point of the night and that was enough for Boston to win the game as Golden State ran out of time to make a further run. Detroit knocked off the Knicks earlier in the evening meaning Boston moved back into second place in the East win a game cushion on New York.

Parquet Plays : Celtics Best Sets/Actions vs Golden State

gettyimages-2262016679.jpg

After a week devoted to rest, recalibration, and reflection, the Boston Celtics returned to the hardwood with sharpened focus and renewed intent.

They secured their 36th victory of the season with a 121–110 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Boston controlled the tempo for much of the contest, executing on both ends with discipline and purpose. However, a blistering 15–0 surge by Golden State in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter injected late drama into an otherwise steady performance.

Rather than unravel, the Celtics steadied themselves. They absorbed the momentum shift, reasserted control, and answered with composure — a poised response that ultimately sealed the victory and underscored their maturity in such situations.

Beyond the final margin, what stood out most was the orchestration on the offensive end. Boston’s attack was fluid, deliberate, and unselfish, a reflection of a team fully in sync in the face of adversity. The result was a season-high 36 assists, a striking testament to their connectivity and collective trust. Possession after possession, the extra pass wasn’t just available; it was instinctive.

When asked about the 36 assists on 49 made field goals, head coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized the intentionality behind the performance. “I thought for majority of the game, we managed the game with our ability to execute, you know get a shot every possession find a two-on-one, have great spacing, great screening.”

That cohesion was evident in real time, but upon a second viewing, the layers became even more apparent.

Here are the plays that stood out to me.

The first offensive possession of the game for Boston was a great one that reminded me of old times.

Play starts off with a mini “Zipper” cut to get Derrick White to the top of the key. I say mini because the cutter usually starts all the way down near the post then Zipper’s all the way up to the top off a pin down.

Boston has shortened it in the past; I assume for quickness purposes.

When White gets the ball at the top, you’ll essentially see the Celtics having action on both sides in 5 out spacing as both Baylor Scheierman and Neemias Queta set “Flare” screens. Flare screens = an off-ball screen in between the passer and the recipient.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-9.02.24%E2%80%AFAM.png

This resembles “Delay” action which happens when a big has the ball at the top of the key and both sides set Flares or pin downs to get things open. But this particular play with Flares on both sides was ran a ton in 2022.

On the current one, Scheierman slips his Flare screen and Queta holds his.

Queta holding his forces Draymond Green to stay back a tick longer just in case White threw the pass to Jaylen Brown. This allows Queta to run into the screen freely. Right before Queta screens, you can hear Green yell “Ice!” to the on-ball defender.

Ice in pick and roll coverage means shading your body toward the screener, so the handler can’t use it. This is why you see Green on the right side of Queta because if the defender would’ve done it correctly, White would dribble towards Green.

But it doesn’t and White ends up using the screen forcing Green to go to the other side and pick him up. A great screen and that pick up, leaves Queta open on the roll and he gets fouled.

Here we have more pick and roll play from the Celtics.

The term “Mazzulla Ball” is classified as creating and taking advantage of two-on-one and three-on-two situations. With great screening, which Mazzulla noted postgame, the team is able to create both on one play.

The Celtics force two on the ball when Queta’s screen knocks the defender off, and Green has to pick up White once again.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-9.27.23%E2%80%AFAM.png

This in turn creates multiple two-on-ones or a big three-on-two on the lower half of the court.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-9.32.59%E2%80%AFAM.png

White does a great job staying patient and waiting for the corner defender on the right side to make a decision. Queta gets deeper than the corner man and the pass leads to a dunk.

Once again, the Celtics create an advantage through screening.

As Nikola Vucevic sets the screen, former Celtic Al Horford plays to the level and ends up crowding Brown making sure he can’t penetrate the defense further. This gets two on the ball.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-9.41.43%E2%80%AFAM.png

Doing that once again gives us the same multiple two-on-ones and three-on-two look they got last play.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-9.42.21%E2%80%AFAM.png

In this situation, whichever corner defender the big rolls closer to is who the passer will read. The last play was on the right side and on this one it’s the left. Moses Moody (defender in the corner) comes all the way into the paint to disincentivize the pass to Vucevic which leaves Jordan Walsh wide open in the corner and Brown finds him.

That was one of Brown’s career high 13 assists in this game. He stuffed the stat sheet in last night’s contest, putting up 23 points and 15 rebounds to go along with the passing. When asked about his all-around performance postgame, Mazzulla remarked, “JB just had a clear understanding of what the advantage was every time down the floor,” highlighting his keen awareness and ability to read the game in real time.

Continuing with the plays, here the Celtics get two on the ball in a different way.

White sets the back screen for Vucevic then gets to the top of the key. He then calls for Payton Pritchard to set the Ghost screen, which causes some confusion defensively.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.02.31%E2%80%AFAM.png

This creates a three-on-two on the left side for a second.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.03.35%E2%80%AFAM.png

What’s crucial on this is the cut by Sam Hauser. As I just noted, the advantage created by the Ghost screen is fleeting, so the team must execute after it perfectly to fully capitalize on it. When he sees Pritchard coming to the wing, he immediately cuts.

He does this because he knows his defender will step up to a wide-open Pritchard on the wing. The cut also draws the attention of Kristaps Porzingis away from his man who is Vucevic in the corner. Pritchard sees Porzingis trying to reach Hauser and hits Vuc in the corner.

Next, we have dribble penetration creating the advantages.

As the Celtics attempt to go to another pick and roll, the on-ball defender correctly Ices the screen this time making White reject it. White sees this and smartly proceeds to drive drawing Porzingis closer to him and away from Vuc.

This causes a longer closeout for the big man and Vuc shows his versatility pump faking and driving past him. White’s defender sees this and stops the drive and behind him, Green picks up his. The thing is in doing so Green completely leaves the corner and thus the two-on-one.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.21.43%E2%80%AFAM.png

Vuc makes a phenomenal read and gets rewarded with the hockey assist.

This set didn’t result in points (looked like a goal tend) but it was my favorite one of the game.

Here the Celtics go to Horns Out Ram. “Horns Out” is a type of entry that is made up of two things. First, the play starts in “Horns” alignment which can be easily identified by seeing two players at or near the elbows of the free throw line.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.33.10%E2%80%AFAM.png
initial-alignment-1-1-copy.webp

The “Out” part is an Out cut which is when someone cuts out to either wing with a screen. The Celtics also use these out cuts in “Stack Out” entry plays. I don’t like to assume, but I’m going to say maybe Brown running over Queta wasn’t apart of action.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.33.35%E2%80%AFAM.png

Next, the “Ram” part is named after a Ram screen which is an off-ball screen set for someone to go set a ball screen.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.34.06%E2%80%AFAM.png

Queta sets the screen for Brown after the screen from White, and two gets put on the ball again. Brown gets it to White and he makes a great touch pass into Queta who has good position.

Brown starts it all for the green team on this one.

Him touching the paint draws three Warrior defenders to him and creates a three-on-two situation.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.48.53%E2%80%AFAM.png
Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.49.30%E2%80%AFAM.png

All that’s left now is to play Celtics basketball and whip the rock to the open man.

Early in the second half, the Celtics run “Horns Stagger Slip”.

Stagger screens are two of the same off-ball screens with space in between them.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-10.55.40%E2%80%AFAM.png

Hauser is the first one, so he sets that but watch the IQ of White as the second screener. As he’s preparing to set the screen, he feels that his defender is leaving his body. The moment his arm is let go he slips wide open for the layup.

Brown creates more offense for the C’s here with incredible pace.

After the missed free throw, we see him jet to the block where Horford comes to double. He wastes no time getting the ball out of his hands, which helps the Celtics play four-on-three. Another wrinkle that helps Boston on this play is Porzingis not wanting to close out on Pritchard and telling his teammate to.

Play most likely ends up the same way honestly, but this creates a longer closeout and gives the Celtics an extra tick of time. Pritchard attacking the closeout and touching the paint creates a two-on-one in the corner.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-11.17.11%E2%80%AFAM.png

Hugo Gonzalez and Ron Harper Jr play hot potato for a second which leads to Gonzalez attacking a closeout himself and displaying some intriguing self-creation.

For the second to last play, you can hear Mazzulla call out another beautiful Horns set. I can’t quite make out what he said after Horns, so any theories are welcomed.

Pritchard enters it into Vuc in the pinch post, and Harper Jr sets a “Rip” screen for Pritchard.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-11.26.12%E2%80%AFAM.png

He gets a nice release angle on the dive, but Vuc couldn’t get it to him. Pritchard uses that Rip screen to go set a pin down for Brown.

Screenshot-2026-02-20-at-11.26.40%E2%80%AFAM.png

As Brown curls off the screen, his defender is forced to chase over and ends up behind him. This forces Pritchard’s defender to help on Brown and make sure he doesn’t get an easy layup. But now nobody is on catch and shoot P.

Last but not least, we just have great recognition by Mazzulla. As Pritchard is isolated vs Horford, he yells “Switch! Hugo!” so that Brown can be the guy that’s one pass away. This is done so the better offensive player can be the closest outlet to the driver if they cannot score whether it’s catch and shoot or driving. Pritchard gets it to Brown, and he finishes around his old buddy Porzingis.

Ultimately, Boston’s victory over Golden State was more than just another notch in the win column; it was a showcase of precision, teamwork, and basketball IQ. From the fluid ball movement that produced a season-high 36 assists, to the savvy cuts, screens, and reads that define “Mazzulla Ball,” the Celtics displayed an offense that is both disciplined and dynamic.

Al Horford hints at reason for leaving Celtics

gettyimages-2262020940.jpg

SAN FRANCISCO — Al Horford took his warmup shots with his son Ean and then sat in the locker room, open to reporters and took several questions. It’s a routine he did regularly while in Boston, and now performed in Warriors gear. And there’s still some uncertainty about why, with Golden State now 7.0 games behind the Celtics in the standings, Horford left the franchise he won his first championship and spent the most number of seasons with.

“For me, the decision, it’s something that’s deeper than just the basketball stuff,” Horford said pre-game on Thursday when asked by CLNS/CelticsBlog why he left. “It’s something that at some point I’ll share with people, but for me, it felt like it was the time for me to go elsewhere.”

Horford signed a two-year, $11.7 million contract with the Warriors late in the offseason after reports early in July pointed toward him departing Boston. Brad Stevens acknowledged later that the Celtics wanted to keep Horford and Luke Kornet, and made them offers, while noting that Boston’s limited flexibility by pointing to the minimum contracts they agreed to with other front court players.

His departure didn’t come without context around it though. Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tear nearly moved Horford to tears in the locker room following Game 4. Stevens signaled to Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday following the Celtics’ defeat in Game 6 that they would probably move them for financial reasons during the offseason. An end of an era loomed, and while Horford reportedly weighed retirement among numerous options, Payton Pritchard stressed in his exit interview the importance of bringing Horford back.

Instead, reports almost immediately linked him to Golden State at the start of free agency, and after the deal became official after the Warriors’ nearly summer-long cap navigation, Horford expressed a desire to continue competing as a reason for joining Golden State. This week, he said Boston’s success came as little surprise.

“If you think about, even last year, we had a lot of guys down throughout the year, and we were playing a lot of the time missing a lot of players, and we were still winning a lot of games,” Horford said. “So I feel like that was a blueprint right there, and this year, I just think guys are comfortable playing in that situation and the biggest thing is everybody’s bought into what Joe is telling them and he’s just running a really good program over there, him and all those assistant coaches. They’re really doing a good job getting the guys ready, getting them to commit and play at a high level, and that’s why I feel like it’s so smooth. But I think if you look at last year, there were a lot of times that KP was out, Jrue was out, that different guys were out and we were still getting results. That’s why it’s not surprising of their success.”

Horford’s departure also surprised his father Tito when he found out about it over the summer, he told CLNS Media in October. He repeatedly called the decision one that was outside of Al’s control, and sources indicated at the time that Boston wasn’t able to offer more than a minimum contract to the veteran. Horford received two years of the taxpayer mid-level exception from the Warriors, where he’s averaged 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game on 42.9% shooting (33.8% 3PT). Though a significant role also appealed to him, he only started five of his first 34 appearances with Golden State.

Porziņģis and Horford both came off the bench during Thursday’s loss to the Celtics, where the Warriors fell behind by as many as 34 points early in the third quarter. They rallied to within 11 points in the fourth behind the former Celtics’ contributions in a double-big look, Horford finishing with five points, eight rebounds and four assists on 2-for-10 shooting. After the buzzer, Joe Mazzulla found Ean for a photo, Celtics players greeted their former veteran and Horford admitted just how weird the experience proved.

The Warriors looked like a team figuring things out at an almost ground floor level. Boston more resembled a machine that’s played together for years. And while Horford remained committed to what they’re figuring out in Golden State, he didn’t rule out one more appearance in green before his career ends.

“As far as the end of my career, I don’t know,” Horford said. “I always keep that open. It would definitely be a privelage to do that, but I’m obviously so focused on trying to finish out this year.”

Jayson Tatum addresses speculation over set return date

gettyimages-2257487286_50773d.jpg

LOS ANGELES — Jayson Tatum appeared on the floor moments before Celtics practice on Saturday and addressed photos showing him seemingly taking part in team activities in San Francisco. He clarified that he didn’t take part in a practice, and rather participated in an optional workout with several Celtics teammates, including Luka Garza.

Joe Mazzulla would not say whether Tatum, who added that he hasn’t practiced since his Maine session, would practice with the team on Saturday as he continues to progress in his on-court work and overall recovery process.

“He’s just continuing to get better,” Mazzulla said. “Working on his reads and then continuing to hit his checkmarks in the weight room and then in the treatment room as well. The main goal is just making sure he gets 100% healthy and continues to get better and better.”

“It’s just trusting the group that we have around him,” he continued. “And taking it step-by-step. So, just making sure we stick to that as much as we can. He came out of the Maine practice pretty well, and so we’ll continue to see it from there. It just depends as he continues to hit those check marks, whatever they may be.”

The latest comments from Tatum and Mazzulla maintain the secrecy the Celtics and Tatum’s team have operated with through the final stages of his Achilles recovery. Several reports indicated over the past week that Tatum’s still uncertain whether he’ll return or not this year, and despite speculation around an NBC-flexed Celtics start time on March 1 against the Sixers, he said that he does not have a return date in mind at the moment.

Mazzulla said the Celtics hadn’t practiced since Tatum’s Maine Celtics session, which went well. Boston doesn’t have a plan for him to join their actual practice activity other than continuing along his normal progression. That would seemingly indicate that there’s no imminent return expected for the Celtics star in the near future.

“Work out, see how you recover the next day and then you just make a plan from there,” Tatum said. “It was a little five-on-five (on Wednesday). It’s tough to go into detail on every single thing I’m doing every day, but I will say I’m just getting acclimated more and doing little things with some of the guys out there, but it’s all part of rehab and just going with the plan.”

Tatum added that he feels better than he did the previous day, and that’s all he’s focused on at the moment rather than a specific return date. He stressed that it’s important that he put himself in position to have a return be a conversation, and continued stressing he won’t play until he’s 100% and he wouldn’t indicate what percent he’s currently at.

The Celtics arrived at Santa Barbara Prep for practice alongside Tatum, who took some light shots on the court before the session began. He sported a team-issued shirt and sweatpants, put on his sneakers and spoke to the media before the practice closed once it began.

“I feel like I’m beating a dead horse,” Tatum said. “I’m taking it one day at a time. This is something that’s very serious. The injury that I had is just a long journey. For me, it’s just easier to take it one day at a time and see how I progress from there.”

Which team will finish with the 2 seed in the East? (daily topic)

gettyimages-2253505872.jpg

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 25: Jalen Brunson #11 of the New York Knicks dribbles the ball against De'Andre Hunter #12 of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the first quarter at Madison Square Garden on December 25, 2025 in New York City. The Detroit Pistons have a commanding 5.5 game lead in the East (as of Saturday afternoon). Behind them are the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers, all bunched up within a game and a half of each other. It is worth noting that the Raptors are 3.5 games out of 2nd place as well.

The Celtics have the slight edge at the moment, and they could potentially be getting back Jayson Tatum any day now. But clearly this race is far from over.

Looking to the strength of remaining schedule (via Tankathon), the Celtics have the 6th most difficult schedule remaining. They play the Thunder twice, as well as the Spurs, Nuggets, Cavs, and Knicks.

In contrast, the Cavs have the 26th hardest remaining schedule (5th easiest) and the Knicks have the 20th. The Cavs are also 9-1 in their last 10 have have gotten a big boost from adding James Harden to their lineup. Sure, he hasn’t exactly delivered in the playoffs, but he’s a regular season stats machine that helps teams stack wins.

The last few months are also always kind of fluky when you factor in tanking teams, lame duck players and coaches, load management, and teams that have nothing left to play for after their seed is locked in.

With all that said, the next couple of weeks could be critical to the seedings. So where do you see the Celtics finishing and who do you think ends up with the 2 seed?

Joe Mazzulla perfectly explains story of Celtics season after blowout win against Lakers

gettyimages-2262581555.jpg

Los Angeles, CA - February 22: Guard Jaylen Brown #7 of the Boston Celtics talks with head coach Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics in the second half of a NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 22, 2026. (Photo by Keith Birmingham/MediaNews Group/Pasadena Star-News via Getty Images) | MediaNews Group via Getty Images

LOS ANGELESJaylen Brown broke into a toothy grin as he chest-bumped Payton Pritchard at the center of Crypto.com arena, moments after Pritchard crossed up Austin Reaves en route to his sixth three-pointer of the night.

Brown, Pritchard’s longest-tenured teammate, relished the offensive explosion.

“Payton has been playing at an All-Star level,” Brown said after the Celtics 111-89 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. “And I’m happy to see it. Nobody happier to see it than me.”

Pritchard’s three-pointer extended the Celtics’ lead to 22 points, their 37th win of the season all but secured. And, a team that was once heralded by many as destined for the lottery extended their lead for second place in the Eastern Conference.

On the sidelines, Jayson Tatum chuckled, in awe of Pritchard’s masterful offensive display (the Celtics guard finished the afternoon with 30 points on 10-14 shooting).

Jayson Tatum can’t believe Payton Prichard is absolutely cooking LeBron and the Lakers. pic.twitter.com/WfbK8RFzkO

— SM Highlights (@SMHighlights1) February 23, 2026

But afterwards, in quintessential fashion, Pritchard said he wasn’t a finished product.

“[There’s] another step I can get to,” Pritchard said. “So, just gonna keep working — and I’m gonna get to it.”

In one sense, Payton Pritchard was the story of the Celtics’ blowout win over the Lakers — the 27-year-old has been on a tear as of late, averaging 23.6 points and shooting 54.4% from the field in his last 7 games (since Anfernee Simons was traded to the Chicago Bulls).

Payton Pritchard, the NBA’s most efficient isolation scorer this season, overcame an ice-cold start to the year to average 17.6 points and 5.4 assists per game, both career-highs.

But, was Pritchard the story of the Celtics’ Sunday afternoon victory? Is he the story of the Celtics’ season?

Jaylen Brown, of course, deserves plenty of the limelight

In the victory, Brown talled 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, putting forth another all-around performance that earned praise from LeBron James himself.

“This whole MVP thing, I don’t understand why his name is not getting talked about some as well,” James said, per CLNS Media. “Like, nobody gave them a shot to start the season. And he’s averaging what, 30 [points]? Just under 30? It’s a popularity contest sometimes, I tell you.”

Brown has received his fair share of accolades this season; in January, he earned his first-ever Eastern Conference Player of the Month selection. Last week, he started in an All-Star game for the first time in his NBA tenure. And, before the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick stated simply that there were no holes in Brown’s game.

Is Brown’s leap the story of the Celtics’ season?

There’s a strong case to be made. Jaylen Brown has played some of the best basketball of his career, averaging 29.2 points, 7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists — all career-highs.

It’s unusual for a player in their 10th season to make such a substantial lap — Brown is scoring 7 more points per game than he did last year — and it’s the first time in his career he’s been in MVP conversations.

“I feel like I’m the best two-way player in the world,” Brown said. “I play both ends on the court night-to-night. I’m available, which is hard to do. I’m a leader. Help lead my team, empower my team to come out and play confidently, stuff that doesn’t always show up on the analytics. And I’m a winner. I come out and try to win every single night.”

In some ways, Celtics-Lakers was all about the young bucks

It’s hard to boil down the Celtics’ success to the elite play of one player, when all season long has so loudly been about the team. Contributions have come from different players every night — for a stretch, it was Josh Minott starting games for Boston (Minott is no longer on the team).

For a couple-month period, Jordan Walsh, who started 20 consecutive games, was the talk of the town. For a stretch, it was Hugo Gonzalez, who began to break through at just 19 years old.

A hallmark characteristic of this group has been that regardless of who is available, the same attention to detail is on full display.

Nowadays, Sam Hauser and Baylor Scheierman regularly start games for Boston, with Pritchard and Nikola Vucevic coming off the bench.

There were turning points in Sunday’s beatdown that felt like the Celtics’ success could largely be attributed to the team’s trio of young defenders: Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez, and Jordan Walsh.

Mazzulla said that Brown pulled all three aside — as well as Sam Hauser — at Saturday’s practice in Santa Monica in order to go over some of the Lakers’ stars offensive tendencies. That extra scout carried over into Sunday’s game; James, Austin Reaves, and Luka Doncic combined to shoot just 22 of 53 (41%) from the field.

And, Brown liked what he saw from that trio in action on Sunday afternoon.

“Hugo made some big plays for us,” Brown said. “Baylor was amazing tonight. Defense is what we’ve got to continue to elevate.”

The Celtics, in turn, tallied their third consecutive victor.

They now have the NBA’s fourth-best record (trailing only the Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs) and third-best net rating (trailing only the Pistons and Thunder).

After the win, Mazzulla was asked what he thought was the story of the Celtics’ season.

His answer perfectly reflected the Celtics’ mindset: focus on the right now, on the controllables. Focus on the process, not the result.

“The story’s not done,” Mazzulla said. “We are only a product of what we do tomorrow, what we do the next day, and that’s just the story. If we would have lost this game by 1, tomorrow’s film session [would have] to be as detailed and as disciplined as it is going to be with the result that we had. And so that’s the story. It’s not done yet.”

Asked Joe Mazzulla what he thinks the story of this Celtics team has been:

“The story's not done. We are only a product of what we do tomorrow, what we do the next day, and that's just the story. And if we would have lost this game by 1, tomorrow’s film session has to be as… pic.twitter.com/kM8dPvM0UW

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 23, 2026

Mazzulla doesn’t expect Monday’s Celtics film session to feel any different on the heels of a victory as it would feel after a loss. After the 22-point win, he noted the Celtics gave up two back-cuts and an after-timeout lob to LeBron. He also noted that the Celtics overhelped on several three-point attempts.

All of those plays — win or loss — is what the group will focus on tomorrow.

“We haven’t done anything,” Mazzulla said. “All we’ve done is stick to the process of winning on both ends of the floor, put our head down. [We] don’t overreact to a good win or to a bad loss. And, [we] get better in the next game.”

Celtics injury report reveals star could miss game vs Phoenix Suns

PHOENIX — Jaylen Brown could be sidelined when the Celtics face the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Brown is listed as questionable on the Celtics’ injury report with a right knee contusion that he was icing in the locker room on Sunday night.

Brown tallied 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in a blowout Celtics win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. The Celtics star is averaging 29.2 points, 7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game this season, and he’s missed five games this season.

The only other player on the Celtics’ injury report is Jayson Tatum, who continued to be sidelined as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Joe Mazzulla wouldn’t say whether Tatum practiced with the Celtics on Saturday, but Tatum did practice with the G League earlier this month and has continued to progress in his recovery.

The Suns, meanwhile, will be very shorthanded. Dillon Brooks is out for the next 4-6 weeks with a broken left hand, and Devin Booker is out with a hip strain for at least the next week. Jordan Goodwin (calf) and Haywood Highsmith (knee) are also both out.

The Celtics are on the first night of a back-to-back on Tuesday, which could factor into their decision to rest Brown. They’ll face the Denver Nuggets in Denver on Wednesday.

How the Celtics and Suns stack up entering the match-up

The Celtics have won 8 of their last 9 games and currently have the Eastern Conference’s second-best record at 37-19. They have the NBA’s fourth-best record, fourth-best net rating, and third-best offense.

The Suns, meanwhile, have dropped 6 of their last 10 games as they deal with a myriad of injuries. At 33-25, they currently have the 7th-best record in the Western Conference.

The Suns have had the NBA’s 9th-best defensive rating at 112.5 (the Celtics have the 8th-best defensive rating at 112.2). Something else to note is the Suns’ ability to crash the offensive glass; they have the 6th-best offensive rebound percentage at 33.2%.

With Booker and Brooks both sidelined, Grayson Allen, Collin Gillespie, and Jalen Green become the players to watch. Allen (17.3 points, 3.9 assists) is Phoenix’s best-available scorer, while Gillespie (13.4 points, 4.7 assists) and Green (13.3 points, 2.4 assists) have also been key contributors.

Celtics-Suns will tip off at 9pm ET at the Mortgage Matchup Center.

Who should win NBA Coach of the Year? (daily topic)

gettyimages-2251635526.jpg

Boston, MA - December 15: Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla and Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff watch the action in the first quarter. The Boston Celtics have been one of the great surprise stories of the season. Much of the credit for that success goes to head coach Joe Mazzulla. Tonight they play another surprise team in the Phoenix Suns, led by Jordan Ott.

This has led to some animated discussions online about who deserves to be Coach of the Year. The other frequently named candidate is JB Bickerstaff who has led the Detroit Pistons to the best record in the East. Some would also point to Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson.

We here are (without shame) very biased towards our team. So for the sake of discussion, I’ll ask that you carefully and reasonably-objectively consider the cases for the other coaches.

JB Bickerstaff (Pistons): This is by no means consensus, but in the preseason John Schuhmann had the Pistons power ranked 11th overall and 4th in the East. They have been the runaway leaders in the East all season long and show no signs of slowing down. They have a real identity and have really “bought in” to their coach. Cunningham has elevated into the MVP discussion and Jalen Duran got his first All Star nod.

Jordan Ott (Suns): Back to the Schuhmann rankings, you have to scroll WAY down to find the Suns at 25th overall. It made sense too, after trading away Kevin Durant and ejecting Bradley Beal. Yet somehow, some way, the Suns are 7th in the West with a .569 winning percentage. How he’s winning with this Land of Misfit Toys roster (Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, Jalen Green) is beyond me.

Joe Mazzulla (Celtics): I think you are familiar with his game.

So who do you think deserves coach of the year?

Another note: I’m not sure how much you put into curses, but coaches that win COTY have a weird tendency to end up out of a job shortly thereafter.

So what are your thoughts?

Neemias Queta is already utilizing Nikola Vučević by “just picking his brain”

gettyimages-2263409441.jpg

When the Boston Celtics acquired Nikola Vučević at February’s NBA trade deadline, it gave them options.

Adding Vučević provided Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla the flexibility to lean on the two-time All-Star, roll with a double-big lineup, or bring him off the bench behind Neemias Queta — the plan Boston has used to acclimate Vooch. But the Anfernee Simons–Chicago Bulls swap in the final 48 hours before the deadline has not only benefited Vučević, now in a contending environment, and Boston’s need for frontcourt depth; it’s also gone a long way for Queta’s breakout campaign as a first-year starter.

“It’s been huge,” Queta told reporters following Tuesday night’s win over the Phoenix Suns, per CLNS Media. “I’m trying to pick his brain every day, trying to figure out how I can get better with my game as well. Credit to him — I think he’s been a great addition in terms of spacing the floor, being able to be a threat down low. He’s going to rebound for sure, too. He’s going to be key for us late in the season, and we’re still trying to figure out a couple of things with him — how to get him in his best spots, and he’s trying to get loose too.”

Vučević has only been around for six games, and Queta isn’t squandering the opportunity of sharing a locker room with the 15-year veteran’s expertise.

For the first 52 games of the season, Queta was on his own. Chris Boucher, a nine-year veteran and two-time champion, joined the Celtics but fizzled out of the rotation early before a deadline trade to the Utah Jazz. With only six games of prior starting experience, Queta was elevated from his usual backup role in response to the offseason departures of Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet, becoming Joe Mazzulla’s starting center. It marked the first true opportunity of Queta’s career, and easily the most challenging.

So as soon as Vučević entered Boston’s locker room for the first time, Queta spotted an avenue, and he wasn’t going to pass it up.

Vučević spent nine years with the Orlando Magic and his six most recent seasons in Chicago, fortifying himself as one of the league’s most skilled perimeter big men. Over the years, he was frequently linked to Boston in trade rumors, and each time landed in Beantown to face the Celtics, fans across the city made their desire clear — offering warm welcomes and not-so-subtle invitations to join the fold, even though it took until his age-35 season for that desire to come to fruition.

In his prime, Vučević was an automatic double-double, capable of averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds. Today, he remains one of the league’s best at spacing the floor and knocking down the three-ball, but it’s the finer details of Vučević’s game that Queta has been eyeing for years.

Now, Queta has the luxury of working alongside Vučević daily, seeing it all up close.

“Being able to seal guys off, how he can be a threat down low, how he can make quick moves down there in the paint, in the post, and just how much more effective I can be,” Queta explained. “Just picking his brain on anything.”

gettyimages-2263409462.jpg

Queta made his 53rd start in 54 appearances this season on Tuesday night in Phoenix. He scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, recording his second consecutive double-double for the first time in his career. His performance wasn’t beyond what Queta has proven capable of as a full-time starter, but it was an extension of the player he’s been before Vučević arrived — eager to learn and ready to step up wherever the team needs him.

“(He’s) curious about the details, wants to get better, understands what he has to do to help us win games, and takes pride in that,” Mazzulla told reporters, per CLNS Media.

That attitude will be most beneficial as Queta logs big, meaningful minutes while Vučević serves as both a teammate and a reliable shoulder to lean on. Whether in practice, on off-days, or during games, Queta can look to Vučević as a source of guidance straight from an expert’s perspective.

What began as a daunting task for Queta has become an ideal situation for the 26-year-old. He’s been a vital part of the retooled Celtics offense, particularly when running the Spain pick-and-roll, and has quietly eased Boston’s frontcourt concerns. Replacing Porziņģis, Horford, and Kornet is no small task, but the promotion has paid off, and now having Vučević in the mix is somewhat of a reward that could pay dividends for Queta over time.

Boston’s fourth straight victory, without Jaylen Brown, was just the latest indicator of his ascension.

“That’s a sign of the consistency that he’s playing with,” Mazzulla told reporters. “That’s the growth of a guy — when you can earn being counted on every night — and he’s earned that. We know, heading into every game, that we can count on him. So it’s a credit to him.”

Queta isn’t looking to put a cap on his potential development.

This season was penciled in as a bridge year for Queta to get his feet wet, but that’s no longer the prevailing sentiment. Boston is flourishing, as is Queta, and expectations have been restored, pushing the Celtics back into the conversation as contenders. He’s no longer viewed as an easy-to-pull-for underdog thrown into a tough situation. Queta has been legit, and he’s been legit throughout the season’s entirety. If anything, he’s underrated when compared with the rest of the league’s starting centers, and little by little, he’s continuously changing the narrative around him.

“I feel like I’ve taken strides in so many different aspects of my game,” Queta told reporters. “And there’s so much more I can get better at. I don’t wanna pinpoint just one thing. I feel like it’d be a disservice to all the stuff I’m getting better at. By thinking, ‘Oh, this is the biggest thing I’ve done,’ I’d be shortchanging what’s coming next. I’m still hungry, and I still wanna keep on getting better.”

The Boston Celtics traveled to Denver to face the Nuggets Wednesday night. Boston had been surging up the power rankings with a blistering month of February and faced off against the fourth placed Nuggets. Boston played a decent enough first half, but they could not hang with Denver in the second and eventually losing by 19 points, 103-84. Jaylen Brown had 23 points and 11 boards. Derrick White chipped in 20 points and 3 blocks for the road team.

Jaylen Brown returned to the starting lineup alongside Baylor Scheierman, White, Neemias Queta, and Sam Hauser after a night off in Phoenix last night against the Suns. Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Julian Strawther, Cam Johnson, and Christian Braun started for the home team. The Nuggets came into the game looking for a home win after losing to the Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

Murray scored the game’s first points on a back cut to the basket. Queta came right back down the other end for a loud tomahawk dunk to get the C’s on the board. Scheierman laced his first three-point attempt on a step-back trey over Murray.

Both teams traded buckets early in the quarter, and it was 10-10 at the 7-minute mark of the first. Vucevic entered the game alongside Queta as a double-big lineup; Hauser was first to the bench for Boston. Jaylen Brown was aggressive early and looked to attack the paint on consecutive trips down the floor. Brown led the C’s with 9 early points as Boston opened up a 16-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the first.

A Christian Braun triple saw another tied score as Ron Harper Jr. got some early minutes alongside Hugo Gonzalez, Brown, Pritchard, and Vooch. Jokic misfired on a three-pointer but backed it up inside with a twirling hook shot over Vucevic.

Boston’s ball movement was superb to start the game as the C’s swung the ball around the key to JB, who rattled home his twelfth point of the quarter on his first three-point make. Boston took a 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. Boston was just 3 of 11 from three in the first, shooting just 27 percent from beyond the arc. Queta had a decent quarter with 6 points in the first quarter.

gettyimages-2263022805.jpg

Derrick White drained two consecutive times down the court for Boston to start the second quarter. The hometown White, was actively involved in all the plays with dimes and scores as Jaylen Brown got a seat on the bench to start the 2nd quarter. White rattled off 8 quick points to start the second quarter as Boston took an early 8-point lead, 36-28.

Denver had several offensive rebounds to get extra possessions, but the Nuggets cut the lead back to just 2 points. Jaylen Brown returned to action at the seven minute mark after a TV timeout. White laced his third triple of the quarter in front of his parents as the C’s kept the pressure on Denver.

Denver hit the lead at the 5 minute mark of the second, 40-39, Jokic was fouled on a deep two pointer but couldn’t convert either of his two free throw attempts. Jaylen Brown scored his first points of the second quarter with a mid range fade away with 2 minutes to go in the half. The pace of play had slowed right down to a crawl midway through the second quarter as both teams struggled to convert at either end.

Vucevic missed a straight on deep three-pointer, Derrick White slipped into the lane and grabbed the offensive board and converted an easy stick back for his fifteenth point of the game. White drained his fourth three of the game just before the half time break, Boston up by one point, 48-47, thanks to Derrick White’s hot 2nd quarter performance.

Brown came out pumped up at the start of the second half, immediately going to the low block and bodied up Strawther as he went through the defenders chest. Brown ran the court the next play and attacked the rim drawing another foul, this time on Cam Johnson. Scheierman converted his second triple from the deep wing as Boston took a quick four-point lead in the third quarter.

Denver got into early foul trouble to start the second half, both teams continued to struggle shooting the ball, Boston was 40 percent compare to Denver, at just 35 percent. Jokic was settling for three-pointers all night and the big man was 2-10 from deep at the six minute mark of the third. Boston went scoreless for 2 minutes, as they watched Jokic hit 5 straight points to take give the home team a 64-61 lead.

Brown had a brilliant chase down block on Simpson, JB ran the court and fed Vucevic for the alley oop tip in. Brown kept the pressure on the Nuggets wings drilling a two-pointer on a step back jumper and then drawing a foul on Braun who hit Brown from behind. Tim Hardaway Jr gave the Nugs some energy from the bench in the third, hitting a pair of shots, Denver up 70-67.

Boston started to show fatigue during the third, on the second night of a back-to-back, Denver’s hustle wearing down the road team at altitude. The Nuggets ended the quarter up by 10 points, 77-67, their largest lead of the game, with 12 minutes of regulation to play.

Denver went on a 15-0 run which pretty much sealed it. Scheierman stepped out of court and later had a three-pointer overruled. Boston’s attempted clean sweep of the West Coast ended as they went down by a wide margin managing to shoot a paltry 33% from the field, and recorded 11 turnovers on the night. Danilo Banton and Luka Garza got some run in the final 5 minutes of play as Coach Mazzulla waved the white flag and got White and Brown out of the game for good.

Boston would drop just their second game of February and now return home to face the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, 7:30 pm EST.

I went on the Celtics’ 4-game roadtrip — here are 3 fun things I observed

gettyimages-2251779119.jpg

DENVER — The Celtics finished their West Coast roadtrip with an impressive 3-1 record, tallying double-digit wins against the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns, before running out of steam in a loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Afterwards, Jaylen Brown noted that a 3-1 record on a four-game trip wasn’t “half-bad” while attributing most of the Celtics’ struggles in Denver to some uncharacteristic poor shooting (like Joe Mazzulla, I’ll give some credit to the Nuggets for playing a pretty superb game).

I’m on my flight home from Denver, and we have had lots of basketball coverage and reporting on the site throughout the trip, so I wanted to share a few more casual observations from my past week on the road!

Celtics fans are literally everywhere, in every city

Celtics fans made their presence known in all four cities of this West Coast trip — San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Denver — which is pretty much par for the course.

I’ve been on the road for the past two seasons, and have been pretty underwhelmed with the home crowds at Chase Center (in SF) and Crypto.com Arena (in LA).

But, this trip, the road fans stood out to me more than ever before.

In LA, we saw Jaylen Brown egging on Celtics fans who were kicked out of the arena in the waning moments of the Celtics’ blowout.

In Phoenix, as the clock winded down, there was so much green and so much applause it honestly felt like a home game.

Loud applause here in Phoenix as the Celtics beat the Suns 97-81 pic.twitter.com/NIaqpILzLS

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 25, 2026

And, Denver had the loudest “Let’s Go Celtics” chants I’ve ever heard in the first quarter of an away game.

“Let’s Go Celtics” chants breaking out here in Ball Arena

Rare to hear this early in a game but the Celtics are VERY well-represented here in Denver pic.twitter.com/nCvnPww9vl

Baylor Scheierman is from a small town in Nebraska!!!

Baylor Scheierman became the butt of a team-wide joke after candidly answering my question about what it was like to play against LeBron James and the Lakers. Scheierman reflected on the experience

“It was a dream come true,” he said. “Being from a small town in Nebraska, I had a lot of hometown friends & family that were taking pictures of the TV screen, sending it to me, ‘You’re on the court with LeBron James. LeBron James is guarding you.”

Asked Baylor Scheierman about going up against LeBron & the Lakers:

“It was a dream come true. Being from a small town in Nebraska, I had a lot of hometown friends & family that were taking pictures of the TV screen, sending it to me, ‘You’re on the court with Lebron James.’” pic.twitter.com/IpL1IyEghT

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 24, 2026

I posted the clip on Twitter/X, and Hugo Gonzalez (who Scheierman is extremely close with) replied to it, poking fun of how often Scheierman brings up the fact that he’s from small-time Nebraska: “Could we please stop spamming the “I’m from a small town in Nebraska”????“

@playforhim3 could we please stop spamming the “I’m from a small town in Nebraska”????

— Hugo González Peña (@hugoglezz_) February 24, 2026

Scheierman, meanwhile, was quick-witted in his response, taking a shot at the fact that Gonzalez was long-destined to be a pro while Scheierman had a more unlikely journey: “Little brother, we weren’t supposed to all be here.”

Hermanito, no se suponía que todos estuviéramos aquí.

— Baylor Scheierman (@playforhim3) February 24, 2026

As I got the Twitter notifications, I laughed at the exchange because I thoroughly enjoy the friendships that emerge on sports teams. They were my favorite part of being on a sports team, and they’ve been my favorite part of covering them over the past three years. I’ve also written extensively about Baylor and Hugo’s very close relationship, and I have enjoyed being in the locker room this year and hearing their constant banter.

Later that night, the Celtics blew out the Phoenix Suns, 97-81, and vibes were extremely high (I wrote about the play of the season here).

Then, Sam Hauser, who tallied 16 points in the win, began his media availability by noting he was “from a small town in Wisconsin” with Scheierman within earshot. Derrick White later noted he was “from a small town in Colorado.”

I actually (jokingly) apologized to Scheierman for setting him up for the slander, because I do frequently ask players about the emotional / pinch me side of being in the NBA. Case in point: on Tuesday night, I also asked Neemias Queta about representing Portugal in the NBA, and what that experience has been like.

Asked Neemias Queta what it’s been like to represent Portugal this year:

“That's always something surreal for me to like, being from Portugal and living in the NBA world, and just being able to go out here and compete at the highest level every night.”

“The more I’m playing… pic.twitter.com/3i6zOD9chY

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 25, 2026

The Scheierman/small-town Nebraska stuff was all in good fun, and the ongoing bit highlighted to me the growing camaraderie on the team — so I thought I’d share it here!

Everyone is cheering on Ron Harper Jr.

Harper Jr. is on a two-way contract, but he’s not your average two-way. It’s obvious to anyone who steps foot in the Celtics locker room that he already gets along pretty well with many of the guys on the official roster, and that’s likely in part because he’s pretty deep-rooted with the Celtics.

He was on the 2024 Celtics Summer League team with Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, and Neemias Queta, and was at Celtics training camp in both 2024 and 2025.

Harper started in place of Jaylen Brown in Phoenix when Brown was sidelined with a right knee contusion. From the jump, I noticed that Brown was extremely animated whenever Harper did anything on the floor, and was coaching him up when he was on the bench.

Jaylen Brown loved that block from Ron Harper Jr pic.twitter.com/6NziClFksB

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 25, 2026

I asked Jaylen about Ron on Wednesday night, and he shared his ongoing message to Ron: “Confidence — just let it fly.”

“At times, you can see he might be thinking about it a little bit,” Brown said. “Ron is one of the best shooters on our team, and teams are leaving him open. Tonight, they were choosing to leave him open, he just has to step in and knock it down, like he’s been doing his whole life.”

Asked Jaylen Brown what’s stood out about Ron Harper throughout this roadtrip:

“Ron’s one of the best shooters on our team.”

Said teams were leaving him open and that it’s all about instilling him with confidence pic.twitter.com/OFDNScJMLE

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 26, 2026

“He cares about the details,” Joe Mazzulla said. “Obviously, the offensive stuff — he can make shots, he can think, he can play. But defensively, just competing, understanding the details, executing the game plan, taking pride in defense… He just loves basketball.”

Those are just a few of my fun notes from this West Coast swing — I’ll try to do more of these journal entry-style posts when I’m on roadtrips moving forward!

BOSTON, MA - FEBRUARY 27: Jaylen Brown #7 of the Boston Celtics drives to the basket during the game against the Brooklyn Nets on February 27, 2026 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The Nets had come into TD Garden losers of 6 in a row on Friday night, they left losers of 7 in a row. The Celtics beat the Nets in blowout fashion, 148-111 behind a big 28 point game from Jaylen Brown.

Only Jayson Tatum missed this one for the Celtics. They started the group that has become the usuals; Derrick White, Baylor Scheierman, Sam Hauser, Jaylen Brown and Neemias Queta. Brooklyn, meanwhile, had no one missing on the injury report. They started Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Michael Porter Jr., Noah Clowney and Nic Claxton.

The Nets have beaten the Celtics once already and the last time these two teams played, it went to 2OT. Brooklyn had given Boston problems this year so it was important that the Celtics brought the energy for 48 minutes. Especially since it was the first home game back off of a west coast trip.

Spoiler alert: they didn’t give the Celtics any problems on Friday.

The Celtics were hot from there early, making their first 5 makes and going 8/10 from the field. However, Brooklyn was able to hang around because Boston could not get a stop as the Nets started the game 7/11 themselves.

Former Celtic Josh Minott checked into the game for the Nets in the first quarter. He had 4 points and a huge poster dunk on Hugo Gonzalez in the period.

The Celtics led 35-32 at the end of the first quarter. They went 6/7 from three point range with the only miss being a Gonzalez heave at the end of the quarter. Nikola Vucevic led the way with 10 points and 5 rebounds off of the bench.

Boston’s defense was lacking in the first half. Entering Friday’s game, the Celtics had the best defense in the league over the past 1o games.

However, Brooklyn was getting whatever they wanted throughout the half. Finishing with 32 points in the paint for the half.

The Celtics still led 66-57 after the half. Jaylen Brown led the team with 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists while Nikola Vucevic had 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Neither team could get a stop for a lot of the third quarter as well. The Celtic stayed hot from three as they were 16/26 from three for the game in the middle of the third quarter as they took their largest lead of the night.

They never looked back.

A 27-7 run gave the Celtics a 109-83 cushion at the end of the third quarter. Jaylen Brown led the team with 28 points while Nikola Vucevic had 24 and 10 off of the bench and was a +25 in the game.

The lead ballooned to 34 points in the 4th quarter as Payton Pritchard put in a nice layup leading to a Brooklyn timeout.

Jaylen Brown finished the game with 28 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds. He was dominant throughout the game shooting 9/12 from the field and 4/4 from three. Meanwhile, Nikola Vucevic finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds and Payton Pritchard scored 22 points and was a +40 for the game.

The Celtics shot an astronomical 67% from the field and 65% from three while Brooklyn shot 49% from the field and 41% from three. Boston’s next game is Sunday night at 8 EST against the 76ers from TD Garden.
