Celtics share Neemias Queta, Jaylen Brown injury updates ahead of Timberwolves game

gettyimages-2245661252.jpg

The Celtics could be shorthanded when they face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. Neemias Queta remains questionable after spraining his left ankle in Sunday’s win over the Orlando Magic, while Jaylen Brown is questionable with lower back spasms. Derrick White, meanwhile, is probable to play with a right calf contusion.

It’s a good sign that Queta is already listed as questionable after pre-emptively being ruled out for the Celtics game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

“[He’s] day-to-day,” Joe Mazzulla said on Wednesday. “We’ll just kind of assess him every day. He got a little bit better today than he was when it initially happened. So we’ll just kind of take it from there each day, see how he is.”

The Celtics survived Queta’s absence against the Pistons

In a 117-114 win over the Pistons, the Celtics turned to rookie two-way center Amari Williams for 15 minutes in Queta’s place. Williams tallied two blocks and three rebounds in his first real stint as an NBA player, and garnered praise from his teammates.

“That was impressive from Amari,” said Jaylen Brown. “I’m not gonna lie, he hasn’t been with us. A lot of pressure, high-profile game — to come in and make an impact? Credit to him.”

Luka Garza earned his first start as a Celtic and ended up playing just 11 minutes. But, for much of the night, the Celtics went small, either with Josh Minott or another perimeter player playing center. The Pistons out-rebounded the Celtics 56-44, but the small-ball Celtics were able to exploit some offensive mismatches.

After the Pistons game, Mazzulla praised the team’s defensive efforts despite the limited frontcourt.

“I thought we battled,” he said. “It almost forced us to have a heightened awareness to the physicality that’s necessary to be able to play. And, I thought we did the best job that we could.”

Mazzulla also mentioned the small-ball lineups that were present for 22 minutes in Wednesday’s win were extra intentional defensively.

“I felt like we protected the rim better than we did when we have bigs out there sometimes,” he said. “Because I think the heightened awareness and kind of more of the — we don’t have another choice. We have to do this.”

If Queta is ruled out, those efforts will have to continue against a Timberwolves frontcourt headlined by Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, and Naz Reid. If Brown or White is to miss the game, the Celtics’ task will be even more formidable.

The Celtics (10-8) will face the Timberwolves (10-8) on Saturday at 5pm ET. The Celtics have won five of their last six games, while the Wolves have lost three in a row.

Queta’s teammates know that his absence will continue to be a challenge.

“We don’t really have a guy that replaces what Neemy does for us,” said Derrick White at practice this week. “So it’s got to be just a group effort, obviously — X, Luka, Chris, they’re gonna get a bigger chance, and we’re gonna need a lot from them. But, it’s also on us — we don’t have Neemy back there to kind of take out some of the problems or the mistakes we make on the perimeter. So it’s gonna be a team effort — rebounding, everything. Hopefully, he comes back as quickly as possible, but we all gotta step up.”

Boston Celtics (10-8) at Minnesota Timberwolves (10-8)
Saturday, November 29, 2025
5:00 PM ET
Regular Season Game #19, Road Game #15
TV: NBA-TV, NBCSB, FDSN
Radio: 98.5 Sports Hub, IHeart/Wolves App
Target Center

The Celtics are on the road to visit the Minnesota Timberwolves for the first of 2 games between them this season. They will meet for a second, and final, time in Boston on March 22. The Celtics won the series 2-0 last season. The Celtics are 47-22 overall all time and 21-14 in games played in Minnesota. This is the first of back to back games for the Celtics. They are 1-2 on the first night of back to back games so far this season.

The Timberwolves mostly kept the same core players from last season, changing just a few players around them. Nickeil Alexander-Walker went to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and cash considerations. Luka Garza and Josh Minott left as free agents to the Celtics. They drafted Joan Beringer with the 17th pick and Rocco Zikarsky with the 45th pick. They also converted Jaylen Clark from a 2 way contract to a regular contract.

The Celtics are 8th in the East, half a game behind 7th place Orlando and 2 games behind 4th place New York. They are half a game ahead of 9th place Chicago and 10th place Philadelphia. They are 2.5 games ahead of 11th place Milwaukee. They are 4-4 on the road and 3-2 against Western Conference teams. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and have won their last 2 games.

The Timberwolves are 7th in the West, 1.5 games behind 6th place Phoenix and 3 games behind 4th place Houston. They are 1 game ahead of 8th place Golden State, 2.5 games ahead of 9th place Portland and 4.5 games ahead of 11th place Utah. They are 5-3 at home and 4-1 against Eastern Conference teams. They are 6-4 in the last 10 games and have lost their last 3 games.

One of the stories of this game will be Luka Garza and Josh Minott returning to Minnesota where they both played for the past 3 seasons. This could go in a couple of directions. Either they play very well and have a revenge game against the team that let them go or they could feel too much pressure and struggle to do anything. Either way, the Timberwolves fans should welcome them back. It will be interesting to see if Joe starts Garza again against his former team.

After this game at home on the road in Minnesota the Celtics will play back to back in Cleveland on Sunday. They then have one game at home vs New York. After that, they play at Washington, at home against the Lakers and at Toronto before a break for the NBA Cup games. After the break, they host Miami, play at Toronto, host Indiana and then head out on a 5 game road trip through Indiana, Portland, Utah, Sacramento and the LA Clippers.

After this game, the Timberwolves will return home to play in the second game of back to back games against San Antonio. Then they play 2 games in a row at New Orleans. Then they go home for games against the Clippers and Phoenix before the break for the NBA Cup. After that they have a 4 game home stand against Memphis, Oklahoma City, Milwaukee and New York.

Jayson Tatum remains out as he rehabs from a torn Achilles. Neemias Queta missed Wednesday’s game with an ankle sprain and is questionable for this game. I’m going to guess that Luka Garza will start in his place again, but Joe may start Chris Boucher, Xavier Tillman, Josh Minott, or even Amari Williams, who was called back from Maine for this game. With Joe, you never know.

The Celtics also added Jaylen Brown to the injury report due to low back spasms. He has been listed as questionable several times before but has yet to miss a game. They may be more cautious this time due to playing back to back. Derrick White is also on the report as probable due to a right calf contusion. Queta, Brown and White are all a game time decision. The Timberwolves have no one listed on their injury report.

Key Matchups
Payton Pritchard vs Anthony Edwards

Edwards is averaging 28.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.5 streals per game. He is shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.2% from beyond the arc. The Celtics need defend him both in the paint and on the perimeter as he can score very well from both.

Jordan Walsh vs Julius Randle
Randle is averaging 23.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is shooting 47.5% from the field and 35.2% from beyond the arc. As with Edwards, the Celtics have to guard Randle both in the paint and on the perimeter as he is very good in both.

Honorable Mention

Jaylen Brown vs Jaden McDaniels
McDaniels is averaging 16.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. He is shooting 53.0% from the field and 46.6% from beyond the arc. He is shooting very well, especially from the perimeter and so the Celtics will need to stay with him.

Keys to the Game
Defense Defense Defense!!
Defense is the key to winning every game. The Timberwolves average 118.8 points per game (10th) while the Celtics average 114.8 points per game (22nd). The Celtics are 17th with a defensive rating of 114.2 while the Wolves have a defensive rating of 112.2 (11th). The Celtics have been inconsistent on defense this season. Sometimes they lock down on defense but other times they slack off on defernse. The Celtics have got to play tough team defense for all 4 quarters if they hope to get a win in this game.

Rebound – The Celtics are averaging 44.4 rebounds per game (16th) to 44.2 rebounds per game for the Timberwolves (18th). The Celtics will need to crash the boards to keep the Wolves from getting extra possessions and second chance points. Much of rebounding is effort and the Celtics have got to work harder on the boards than the Wolves.

Effort and Energy – In most of their losses this season, inconsistent effort was the reason for the loss. They have allowed teams they should have blown out to either beat them or make it a close game. The Celtics need to have the same effort and energy they showed against the Pistons.

3 Point Shots – When the Celtics make their 3’s they are tough to beat but when the 3’s aren’t falling, the game gets really ugly. The Celtics are 3rd in the league, taking 42.9 threes per game. The Timberwolves are 15th with 36.6 threes a game. Although the Celtics are 6th with 15.3 made 3s per game, they are 18th , shooting 35.7% from beyond the arc. The Timberwolves 6th shooting 37.8% from beyond the arc. The key is simple. The Celtics must make their threes and they have to defend the perimeter well to keep the Timberwolves from making theirs.

X-Factors
On the Road
– The Celtics are playing in the first game of a 4 game road trip. They need to focus on the game and on playing with effort and not on the distractions of playing on the road. They can’t let the travel and staying in hotels and playing in front of a hostile crowd take away from their focus on the game.

Injuries – The Timberwolves are healthy with no one on their injury report. With Jaylen Brown and Neemias Queta both questionable, and Derrick White possibly hampered with a sore calf, the Celtics could be very shorthanded. Everyone who plays will have to step up and give a little extra on both ends of the court.

Officiating – Officiating always has the potential to be an x-factor. Each officiating crew calls the game differently. Some refs call it tight and constantly call fouls while others let them play with few fouls called. The Celtics need to adjust to how the refs are calling the game and not allow bad calls or no calls to take away their focus.

Celtics lose hard fought battle to Timberwolves, 119-115

gettyimages-2248515920.jpg

With Boston back at full strength, the Celtics geared up for what was sure to be another close battle with the Minnesota Timberwolves and this matchup did not disappoint. In another hard fought game, the Celtics were not able to hold off the Timberwolves in this matchup as they lost 119-115. Jaylen Brown led the way for the Celtics with 41 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals on 17-32 FG, and 5-11 3PM but it wasn’t enough as Anthony Edwards led Timberwolves with 39 points on 12-24 FG and 5-11 3PM.

First Quarter

Jaylen Brown scored the first points of the game for the Celtics with a three pointer but both teams shooting started out slow in the first quarter. Neemias Queta wasted no time getting his game off coming back from a left ankle sprain as he scored 8 of Boston’s first 13 points and had 7 rebounds (4 offensive rebounds) against 4-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert in the first 6 minutes.

A track meet started to ensue between both teams as they made 12 straight baskets going back to the 6:16 mark of the first quarter to the 3:01 mark. This offensive explosion was due to their superstars, Jaylen Brown and Anthony Edwards, controlling the offense with their scoring and playmaking. Brown was cooking the most however as after he hit a mid range jumper over Edwards, he gave him a “too little” gesture that Edwards could only smile at.

Brown had an incredible first quarter as he finished with a season high 19 points in a quarter on 8-12 FG and 3-5 3PM. He put the finishing touches on his masterpiece with a pull-up three at the buzzer that gave Boston a 36-32 lead.

Second Quarter

With Brown on the bench the Celtics offense continued to click as they went on an 11-2 with a midrange jumper from Payton Pritchard, a deep three from Baylor Scheierman, and back to back threes from Sam Hauser that forced the Timberwolves to call a timeout 3 minuets into the second quarter. Timberwolves responded with a 12-2 run of their own to retake the lead and force the Celtics to call a timeout with 6:37 left.

Jaylen Brown picked up where he left off out of the timeout as he hit a midrange jumper, set up Queta for another basket over Rudy Gobert, and made an incredible pass to Sam Hauser in the corner for a wide-open three. This was a part of a 20-6 run by the Celtics as they exploited the Timberwolves inability to defend the midrange shot and opened up a 69-59 lead at the half.

Brown was on fire in the first half as he scored 27 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals on 11-16 FG and 4-7 3PM. He became the first player in NBA history to have that stat-line in a first half as the Timberwolves had no idea how to defend him. Neemias Queta also had his best half of the season, racking up a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds on 6-7 FG. Sam Hauser also had a great half as he had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists on 4-8 FG and 3-6 3PM.

Boston’s shot making was flowing in the half as they shot 56% from the field and 41% from three while Minesotta shot 48% from the field and 38% from three. The Celtics also won the rebounding battle at the half as they out-rebounded the Timberwolves 23-15.

Third Quarter

Brown and Queta started the second half right where they left off as the Celtics ran a play right at Gobert that ended in a dunk for the Celtics big man and Brown put Julius Randle in the blender and hit another step-back midrange jumper. Brown hit 3o points at the 8:53 mark of the third quarter but the Timberwolves started to find their offense, cutting the Celtics lead to 3 points until Derrick White hit three off of some impressive ball movement by Boston to force Minnesota into a timeout.

— Pull up shoot (@NElGHT_) November 29, 2025

The Celtics started to play sloppy as the Timberwolves cut their deficit to 1 point on an Anthony Edwards layup that forced Boston to call a timeout at the 4:52 mark of the quarter. Edwards gave the T-Wolves the lead out of the timeout as he started to heat up.

Both teams traded the lead back and forth but neither team was able to run away with the game as the defense started to tighten up. The Celtics had a bunch of open shots that they couldn’t hit but Josh Minott had a nice put back after working for an offensive rebound and Jaylen Brown made a layup in the final seconds of the third quarter to make the score 94-92 Minnesota going into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

With Brown on the bench, the Celtics offense was struggling to start the fourth quarter until Payton Pritchard hit a tough midrange jumper over Mike Conley at the 9:40 mark. Both defenses continued to hold up to begin the quarter as neither team could score until Terrance Shannon Jr made a fast break layup that made it a 4 point game and forced the Celtics to call a timeout at 8:13 of the quarter.

Boston put in their starting five in the game out of the timeout, hoping to fins a spark. Shannon Jr continued to make his mark hitting another three but Brown responded with an incredible and-1 layup but missed the free throw. After a Minnesota timeout, Pritchard made a put back layup that Edwards responded to with a three pointer, two free throws, and a layup to make it a 10 point Timberwolves lead with 4:29 left.

After a Celtics timeout, Queta missed two free throws and Edwards made another layup in response as the the game slowly started slipping away from Boston. Jaden McDaniels fouled out of the game at the 3:33 mark and Queta redeemed himself at the free throw line, hitting both to give him a season high 17 points. Jaylen Brown then made a layup on the fast break after he stole the ball from Dante DiVincenzo and Neemias Queta hit another 2 free throws to make it a 6 point deficit with 2:41 left.

Derrick White and Jaylen Brown then hit back to back threes to tie the game with 1:36 left in the ball game as a part of a 12-0 run. Mike Conley responded with a wide open corner three and Anthony Edwards hit two free throws to give the Timberwolves a 5 point lead with 44.6 seconds left. White then got fouled on a three point attempt and hit 2 of his free throws to make it a 3 point game with 37.7 seconds left.

With time running out and the Timberwolves having the ball, Anthony Edwards was defended tightly by Derrick White. He threw up a prayer at the end of the shot clock and it went it for a dagger three to give Minnesota a 6 point lead. DiVincenzo hit a free throw and Sam Hauser made a three at the buzzer to make the final score 119-115, Timberwolves win.

10 takeaways from a cold night in Minnesota

gettyimages-2248527075.jpg

#1 – Jaylen Brown generated 58 points out of 115

Another impressive offensive game from Jaylen Brown. While the other offensive creators struggled to get going, JB was on fire from the jump, and it kept the Celtics in the game. As Rudy Gobert was often in drop coverage, Brown’s ability to punish it with his jump shots was key.

View Link

While his outside shooting was the key to beating the Timberwolves’ drop coverage, his post-up gravity was also extremely valuable in generating open shots. This season, Brown is playing less from the post than last season, but it remains a great offensive approach to create space. Because of Jaylen’s scoring ability, defenses often overhelp when he is in the post or near the rim, which leads to open teammates.

View Link

With 41 points and seven assists, Jaylen Brown either scored or assisted on more than half of the Celtics’ points. Yet, because of another cold night from Payton Pritchard and Derrick White, Boston didn’t have enough firepower to steal this game from Anthony Edwards and his team.

#2 – There was no solution against Ant

Last night, we got ourselves a duel of old-school scorers, with a lot of mid-range shots and isolations from both Brown and Edwards. And while the Timberwolves struggled to contain JB, the Celtics had similar issues with Ant.

View Link

The dilemma against such a scorer is that you can’t leave one player alone — even great defenders like D-White. Ant is big enough to post up guards who are as fast as him, using his strength to bully his way to the rim. And if you switch with a bigger body, his shooting and handle have improved enough that he can create space against a slower matchup.

View Link

And like JB, as the game goes on, his gravity increases, generating more and more open space for his teammates. That is probably why the Timberwolves’ coaching staff like to surround him with Naz Reid and Mike Conley instead of Jaden McDaniels or Rudy Gobert at times. Just by his presence on the court, there is more space for shooters beyond the arc.

View Link

#3 – Sam Hauser the switch beater

The switch-everything defensive coverage is a smart way to avoid gaps in the defense, but it can be much trickier to execute than people think. The instruction is simple: switch on every screen… but what if the screen isn’t really set?

Here, for example, Hauser is about to set a screen on Randle for Pritchard, so Rob Dillingham prepares to switch. But Hauser never actually makes contact and instead slips around Randle. As a result, Randle doesn’t switch because he doesn’t feel the screen, while the rookie anticipates too early and ends up on Pritchard, leaving Hauser wide open.

View Link

As Dillingham keeps defending Hauser, the Celtics continue involving him in screening actions, forcing him to make decisions. And often, they were the wrong ones. That’s why he ended up playing only five minutes.

View Link

#4 – Finding the seal

Because of Dillingham’s inability to make good defensive reads, the Timberwolves had to stick with the good old Mike Conley. And while he provides great spacing offensively, the Celtics love going after players like him to build their attack. Last night, as soon as he stepped onto the court, JB targeted him and forced help, which cracked open the defensive shell.

View Link

The Celtics made sure to involve players who were matched up with Conley in these actions, either as the ball handler or the screener. Below, Anfernee Simons sets a pindown screen for Jaylen Brown, and because the Wolves don’t want to leave Conley on JB, they refuse to switch. This gives Brown enough space to catch the ball and drive with momentum, beating Randle at the rim.

View Link

#5 – Picking on Naz Reid wasn’t the solution

But sometimes, the Celtics also attack the wrong seal. And last night, that was the case with Naz Reid.

View Link

When the Celtics go to isolation against a mismatch instead of keeping the ball moving, I always wonder if that is truly the best option. Of course, isolation is an effective way to score with the spacing Boston often has, and it rarely leads to turnovers — one of the main reasons they take such good care of the ball.

View Link

Still, this lack of movement late in games might be one of the reasons the Celtics often come up short in the clutch. Especially without Jayson Tatum, the isolation scoring and spacing are not as elite as before, and I sometimes wish they would move the ball a little more when the game tightens.

#6 – The more the Celtics play around Queta, the better

Once again in Minnesota, we saw a two-faced Celtics team. And the version that performs the best is often the one with Queta involved. The Portuguese big man’s ability to create separation with his screens opens the floor for his teammates across multiple actions and forces Gobert to help on drives.

On the play below, the fact that Queta has the ball and sets the screen creates the gap White needs to attack. And even though White misses, because Gobert and DiVincenzo are focused on the ball, Queta has an easy rebound at the rim.

View Link

The big man’s finishing ability and rebounding are making the Celtics more competitive. He doesn’t need many touches, but his involvement in actions consistently creates something positive. Especially when he is defended by one of the league’s best rim protectors. On the play below, he only touches the ball at the very end — but it’s his flare screen that opens the action for JB, and then he shows great touch to finish over the Frenchman.

View Link

The more he plays, the better it is for Boston. Still, their small-ball approach was also an interesting look for this matchup.

#7 – Small-ball Celtics

Last night, the Celtics played 16 minutes without a true center. This was another example of Josh Minott’s ability to fill whatever role is asked of him. With the former Timberwolf as the “center,” the Celtics had better spacing and played with more pace. They were also more aggressive on the ball, pushing for transition opportunities to compensate for the lack of size and interior scoring.

View Link

Minott also matched up well with Naz Reid’s skill set. His perimeter defense and length bothered the Wolves’ sixth man. On top of that, his willingness to crash the offensive glass still created extra chances even with Queta on the bench.

View Link

If his shooting can become even moderately efficient, this could become a real game-changer, as Boston would be able to run true five-out lineups like they did last season.

#8 – The Wolves were on fire from deep

Looking back at Boston’s defense, it’s frustrating to see how hot the Wolves got from outside. With strong gap help, the Celtics limited the volume of drives. Ant and company generated only 20 attempts at the rim, with efficiency just above 60%.

But that defensive scheme only works if the shooting turns cold… which it did not.

View Link

Minnesota took more threes than the Celtics, which is unusual. On top of that, they made 44% of them. Hard to stop — but the Celtics’ ability to take away the paint was impressive, even during the minutes without a center.

#9 – Free-throws problems

Getting to the line is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to score. Unfortunately, the Celtics have struggled all season in that area, ranking 30th in free-throw rate. Even worse last night, they shot only 60% from the stripe. In a tight game like this one, that can be costly.

#10 – Jayson Tatum in the building, even on a Saturday night in Minnesota

Seeing the franchise player travel with the team, even for a quick November trip to cold Minnesota, says a lot about Jayson Tatum’s connection to the Celtics, the fans, and the game.

Can’t wait to see him back — even if part of me still believes the safest option would be to have him rest for the entire season.

Celtics hang on in Cleveland, beat Cavs 117-115

imagn-27712976.jpg

The Boston Celtics faced off against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena Sunday night. Boston rebounded after a tough loss in Minny last night with a well-rounded team performance to record a nail-biting 117-115 win. Payton Pritchard was on fire from start to finish as he led Boston with 42 points on the night, Jaylen Brown recorded a triple double and Jordan Walsh had a career night.

Boston came into the contest with a starting five of Pritchard, Walsh, Hauser, Brown, and Tillman. Neemias Queta and Derrick White were not available for the Celtics on the second night of a road back-to-back. The Cavs came into the contest with injury concerns also, as Sam Merrill, Jarrett Allen, Lonzo Ball, Larry Nance Jr., and Max Strus were ruled out. Cleveland came into the game with its regular starters of Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, DeAndre Hunter, Jaylon Tyson, and Evan Mobley.

Boston got out to a quick 13-2 lead as the visitors settled into the game from the tip, hitting on a perfect 6-6 from the field. Payton Pritchard spearheaded the C’s with 3 straight, including 2 triples, for 8 points. The Cleveland crowd was noticeably quiet early as Boston forced Kenny Atkinson to take an early timeout. For the Cavs, they were ice cold to start, shooting just 20% from the field before Mitchell finally hit a pair of three-pointers to steady the home team.

Rookie Amari Williams was the first big off the bench for Boston. Anfernee Simons hit on his first two jump shot attempts for Boston from the bench, but the Cavs capitalized on a slew of Celtics turnovers as they raced back into the game to make it a five-point game, 25-20. Former Atlanta Hawk DeAndre Hunter led the way for Cleveland in the first quarter with 8 points in the paint.

For Boston, Payton Pritchard had 10 points, Anfernee Simons chipped in 7 points from the bench, and Jordan Walsh had 6 points and 4 rebounds. After the first quarter, the Cavs had trimmed Boston’s advantage back to just 2 points, as Boston led 28-26.

Boston continued to turn the ball over to start the 2nd quarter as Evan Mobley drove and scored on a finger roll to hand the Cavs their first lead of the game, 33-30. With Jaylen Brown on the bench, Boston fielded a season-first lineup of Gonzalez, Tillman, Simons, Hauser, and Minott. Anfernee Simons reeled off 6 straight points for Boston to keep the Celtics in the game.

imagn-27712978.jpg

Pritchard and Brown returned to the game, and the league’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year converted on a deep triple and then drove and scored on Porter Jr. for his fifteenth point of the night in just nine minutes. The former Oregon Duck drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game as the Celtics erased the Cavalier lead to tie things at 49 apiece.

Jaylen Brown, who had a monster game last night with 41 points, struggled with his shot in the first half, converting on just 2 of 8 from the field, but the Celtics found points and contributions from others, highlighted by Xavier Tillman draining a corner three at the halftime buzzer to go up by 9 points, 58-51 at the half.

Evan Mobley rattled in 2 three-pointers to start the third quarter for the home team before JB finally hit on his first triple of the game from the top of the key for his twelfth point of the night. Brown then stole the ball and fed Sam Hauser on the outlet pass for an open layup. Xavier Tillman had a rare fast break one-on-one score, his ninth point of the night, as Boston looked in control of things, with a 74-65 lead.

Hauser drained a smooth heat-check triple at the five-minute mark, as Boston’s lead extended to 18 points. Payton continued to score at will in the third quarter as he drained a three for his 27th point of the night. Donovan Mitchell spurred a mini run for Cleveland as he cut past an outstretched Jordan Walsh for his ninth point of the night on a layup to cut it back to 15 points. Baylor Scheierman got in on the scoring for Boston with his first made three-pointer.

Cleveland went on a 14-4 run as Mobley hit his third three-pointer of the night to cut the Boston lead back to 11; Boston remained up 90-79 after three quarters. Cleveland scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter to keep the pressure on Boston. The C’s remained scoreless at the 9-minute mark, and a Tyrese Proctor three-point make saw the home team make it a 4-point game, 92-88.

With Jaylen Brown watching on, the Celtics bench tried to keep the Cavaliers at bay. Jordan Walsh was excellent for Boston, stealing the ball right out of DeAndre Hunter’s hands in the C’s backcourt. Walsh had a career night, recording a double-double with 6 minutes to go in the contest. Rookie Hugo Gonzalez drained his first three of the night to get the Boston lead back to seven, 97-90.

imagn-27712973.jpg

Payton Pritchard’s hit his sixth trey of the game as he recorded a 30-piece for his season high in points. Walsh had a career night of his own, with 14 points and 11 rebounds and some tenacious defending against Mitchell and the other Cavalier wings. Boston had an eight point lead with a minute and a half to go in the game as Mitchell dove for a loose ball and picked up a foul and hit on 1 of 2 free throws. Tyson fouled Pritchard at half court and the Celtics leading scorer calmly drained a pair of free throws.

Mitchell hit on a quick triple to cut the Boston lead to just 3 points with 30 seconds to go. Pritchard hit a mid-range jumper for his 40th point of the night. Spida drained yet another three as the Boston lead was just two, 114-112 with just 15 seconds to go.

Pritchard was fouled with 5 seconds to go in the game as Cleveland got desperate to stop the clock. He nailed both free throws to all but ice things for the road C’s. The Cavs had a chance to tie things with 0.6 seconds on the clock, but the Celtics prevailed on the SEGABABA. Boston next play the New York Knicks at home on Tuesday night.

10 Takeaways from Celtics nail-biter win vs. Cavaliers

gettyimages-2249255150.jpg

1. Next Man Up Mentality

In a game where the Celtics were missing Neemias Queta and Derrick White on the second half of a back-to-back, Boston was able to go on the road in Cleveland and defeat one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics did a great job all around as everyone up and down the roster was able to contribute in one way or another. Joe Mazzulla talked to the team after the game and used Amari Williams as an example of this mindset. He talked about how Williams came into the game for the final play and played great defense on Evan Mobley forcing him to airball the game tying shot attempt.

Great mindset win ☘️ pic.twitter.com/dVJ0i4cjlt

2. Payton Pritchard Masterclass

Payton Pritchard had a rough game vs. the Timberwolves on Saturday, only scoring 9 points on 4-14 FG and 1-8 3PM. We should’ve known he was going to bounce back and he did just that in Cleveland. Pritchard dropped 42 points on the Cavaliers shooting 15-22 FG and 6-11 3PM and absolutely took over the game in the 4th quarter when Cleveland was trying to make a comeback.

— Celtics Performances (@BOSPerformances) December 1, 2025

With around 30 seconds left in the game, Pritchard had the ball and got the switch on to Darius Garland. He waived off Jaylen Brown who let him do his thing, drove and stopped on a dime for a midrange jumper that went in, giving the Celtics a 5-point lead and Pritchard his 4oth point of the night. This why you can’t help but love watching Payton Pritchard play basketball. He is just the definition of a dog on the court and when his shots are falling, almost nobody can slow him down.

This was cold 🥶

Pritchard likes his matchup with Garland, and waves off Jaylen.

3. Jaylen Brown Triple-Double

Unlike Pritchard, Jaylen Brown had an incredible game vs. the Timberwolves on Saturday with 41 points, but struggled to find his shot vs. the Cavaliers on Sunday, only shooting 3-13 FG and 1-4 3PM but did go 12-16 from the free throw line. However, the shooting splits don’t tell the story of Brown’s performance as he finished with a triple-double, scoring 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. This was very encouraging to see from Brown because he has been so good all season, that we haven’t seen what his game would look like if his shots weren’t falling.

Highlights from Jaylen Brown's 4th career triple double (19 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) pic.twitter.com/MVEDW8VLmB

— Danielle Hobeika (@DanielleHobeika) December 1, 2025

Brown had a Jayson Tatum-like performance as he was able to not only be the Celtics leading rebounder but also the main facilitator. His most important passes came in the 4th quarter when the Cavs were trying to comeback. Brown drew the attention of three Cleveland defenders and was able to make a bullet pass to Pritchard who was waiting in the dunkers spot for an easy layup. I hope we see more of this playmaking ability from Brown for the rest of the season because he did a great job finding open teammates all night long.

— Pull up shoot (@NElGHT_) December 1, 2025

4. Jordan Walsh Double-Double

Jordan Walsh has become a staple of the Celtics starting lineup this year and he had his best game of the season vs the Cavs with a career high 14 points and 11 rebounds 4-7 FG. Walsh played some incredible defense on Donovan Mitchell as he was able to limit his impact for most of the night while also being a positive on the offensive end, resulting in his first Tommy Award of the season.

Jordan Walsh earns his first Tommy Award of the season with his 14 point/11 rebound double double (love the "finally" denotation at the bottom by @Max_Lederman ) pic.twitter.com/pTaY6XvuzU

— Danielle Hobeika (@DanielleHobeika) December 1, 2025

Walsh also did a great job of always being in the right place when it came to his offensive rebounding. He was battling underneath the basket for positioning that resulted in a couple and-1 baskets and extra possessions for the Celtics. This play was one of my favorites when he was able to get inside on Deandre Hunter and Jaylen Brown just made a nice little dump-off pass. Walsh absorbed the contact from Hunter and finished the layup. I can’t wait to see Jordan Walsh continue to develop this season as I think he will easily become a legit contributor for this team for years to come.

5. Xavier Tillman Huge Minutes

With Neemias Queta out, there were questions on who was going to get the start and it was a little interesting to see Xavier Tillman be the answer. Tillman was a DNP in 9 of the Celtics last 10 games and hasn’t played since November 3rd vs. the Jazz, so no one really knew what to expect from him when it came to starting against one of the best big men in the league in Evan Mobley. However, the X-Man was up for the challenge. In 30 minutes, he scored 9 points, 6 rebounds 3 steals and 1 block on 4-9 FG. It kind of makes you wonder why he hasn’t played for long because he looked like a different player than we’ve ever seen tonight.

He was playing some elite defense, getting in the way of passing lanes that really disrupted Cleveland’s offense. His best play of the night (although it didn’t count) was at the end of the first half after Anfernee Simons hit a three, Tillman stole the inbounds pass and threw up a shot that went in, getting everyone on the bench hyped. Hopefully, we get to see more of Xavier Tillman moving forward because he played pretty solid tonight.

The Celtics almost scored 5 points in the final 1.9 seconds of the first half.

Great effort here by Xavier Tillman, but the bucket was waved off. pic.twitter.com/Fl4OHyZmQH

— Taylor Snow (@taylorcsnow) December 1, 2025

6. Anfernee Simons Impact

Anfernee Simons has been up and down this season but when he has his ups, it really makes an impact on games for the Celtics. Simons had 18 points vs the Cavs on 8-14 FG and 2-7 3PM with most of his scoring coming mostly in the first half and Boston needed it badly. Brown’s shot was not falling and Pritchard was on the bench in foul trouble so somebody needed to score and Simons had a stretch in the second quarter where hit two midrange jumpers and a three in quick succession that helped Boston stay in the game early.

Simons in his BAG 💼 pic.twitter.com/a7kUcbluXg

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) November 30, 2025

These quick scoring bursts really can change a game for the Celtics and has been the difference when it comes to wins and losses this season. Simons is an automatic bucket once he sees one go in and I’m hoping that he can do that with more consistency going forward as he continues to make himself comfortable in this new bench role.

7. Finally Got Free Throws

Going into this game, the Celtics had the same or were out shot at the free throw line in all 19 games they played in this season and was in jeopardy of tying the 1970 Buffalo Braves for the record. Thankfully, Boston was able to avoid this record as they won the free throw battle 29-13 which is kind of crazy considering they were on the road. A lot of this came from Jaylen Brown who shot 16 free throws alone and the Celtics being the more physical team overall. Cleveland’s offense was very three-pointer heavy, which is a little different than what we’ve seen from them in the past, but it also helped the free throw disparity as they weren’t constantly looking to play in the paint.

gettyimages-2248699570.jpg

8. Celtics defense on Mitchell

I want to start this off by saying that Donovan Mitchell is one of my favorite players to watch in the NBA when he is facing any other team in the NBA, except for when he plays the Celtics. Mitchell is one of the biggest Celtics killers in the league today as going into the game, he averaged 30 PPG for his career vs Boston. He has single handedly beat the Celtics for the Cavs over the years just due to his offensive explosions and without Derrick White there was a real chance that it could happen again. However, Boston was able to contain Mitchell for almost the entire game as he finished with only 18 points on 7-16 FG. 3-7 3PM, and forced him into 5 turnovers.

Boston swarmed Mitchell on defense, not letting him get too many one on one matchups. Although it resulted in other players like Jaylon Tyson hitting 5 wide open threes, I think the Celtics were willing to sacrifice that over the possibility of a Mitchell scoring outburst.

The Celtics have held Donovan Mitchell under 20 PTS in each of their two matchups this season

Prior to those two games, Mitchell hadn’t scored less than 20 vs. the Celtics since March 2020

Big win for the Mazzulla truthers 🤩 pic.twitter.com/eEm7f6sn5f

— SleeperCeltics (@SleeperCeltics) December 1, 2025

9. Attacking Garland on Defense

Every time the Celtics play the Cavaliers there is one strategy that Boston uses, and that is attacking Darius Garland on defense. The Celtics killer whale offense is about hunting mismatches and the Cavs alway have the biggest miss match on the floor with Garland. He was a -27 for Cleveland in this game and it feels like he always has his worst games of the season vs the Celtics. Payton Pritchard did a great job exploiting the matchup as a lot of his points came with Garland being the primary defender including this midrange shot in the final seconds of the 4th quarter.

WHAT A SHOT 🤯 pic.twitter.com/FwlzsfhfYv

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) December 1, 2025

I’m not the biggest fan of Garland as a player and I do think his defense holds Cleveland back when other teams have elite wings and centers that can exploit him, but he is an All-Star level player and does change the Cavs offense when he is on the floor. I also just know that every time Cleveland is on the schedule, I’m going to be seeing the Celtics attack Garland as much as they can.

10. Tired of Cavs Comebacks

Celtics vs. Cavs matchups over the years always seem to end in a way that leaves you needing to check your heart rate to see if you’re still breathing. No matter how big the lead is for Boston, there is always a feeling in the back of your mind that Cleveland is going to find a way to get back into the game. This feeling was right once again in this game as the Celtics opened up a 21-point lead in the 3rd quarter but by the final seconds of the 4th quarter, Cleveland hit some insane shots to make it a 1-point game with 0.7 seconds left.

The insanity started with 45.4 seconds when Donovan Mitchell hit a three to cut the Celtics 6-point lead to 3. Pritchard made a layup right after but Mitchell threw up a second three that went in at 20.5 seconds to make it a 2-point game. Pritchard hit two free throws and then Garland hit a crazy three to make it a 1-point game with 1.2 seconds left. Brown made 1 of 2 free throws and the Cavs had a chance to tie or win the game with 0.7 seconds left. Luckily, Evan Mobley air-balled the attempt but I am just so tired of almost every game vs the Cavs coming down to the wire like this.

My mind flashes back to the Dean Wade game, the Grant Williams “Imma hit both” game, and last year when the Celtics went up 25-3 to start the game and still lost. The Celtics were able to hold on to this game and win the season series vs. the Cavs as they only play them one more time on March 8th.

Why Knicks-Celtics series is still a landmark moment for both teams

gettyimages-2214977848.jpg

BOSTON — Karl-Anthony Towns shared a brief memory on Tuesday morning looking back at the Knicks’ stunning upset series win over the defending champion Celtics in May.

“Being tired,” Towns said. “Really tired.”

“But it was fun to see our team through all the adversity and everything being said about us and the series to come out here and play good basketball and give ourselves a chance to win, we didn’t do it early on in every game, but we found a way at the end to come out with the win and just remember our whole team being special when we needed to be special.”

The loss left Boston devastated and uncertain about the team’s future. The Celtics went on to lose or trade much of their championship core across the following months, and the hierarchy atop the east transformed. When Boston returned to Madison Square Garden earlier this season, where they lost Game 6 119-81, they suffered the franchise’s worst defeat ever in a 42-14 second quarter. The Knicks resembled the class of the East, while the Celtics fell to 0-3 in Detroit.

New York’s players saw the victory as evidence of their perseverance, but the Pacers dulled that triumph by stunning them in a Game 1 classic before winning the Eastern Conference Finals in six games. The Knicks decided to part ways with Tom Thibodeau and make minor roster tweaks, trying to build on what they achieved in the second round with a fresh coaching perspective from Mike Brown. They won four games in a row entering Boston on Tuesday after a 9-6 start, and trail an ascending Detroit team. So they’ve hardly separated themselves as the East’s best.

“Through a new system, a new coach,” Mikal Bridges said. “I know fans and stuff, and I’m not saying all, because I know a lot understand what a new system, a new coach does for players and how difficult it can be to try and learn, especially off past success, it’s different. It’s gonna take some time. I think we’re learning, not paying attention to what others think and knowing that being here every single day … it’s gonna take growth.”

That process began with overcoming what looked like an insurmountable matchup with the Celtics last year, who swept them in the season series with three double-digit wins to begin the year before escaping New York in overtime in the finale. Boston built a 16-point halftime edge in Game 1, but Kristaps Porziņģis didn’t return for the second half, the beginning of a battle with the POTS condition that carried into this season in Atlanta.

New York came back and stole the opener on a last-second steal by Bridges in overtime that he repeated to cap a 20-point second half turnaround in Game 2. He scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter, ingratiating himself to Knicks fans after an uneven start to his tenure with the team.

“Good memories and bad memories,” Bridges said looking back. “When they kicked our ass the first game of the season, and then obviously winning, but whole new year.”

For the Celtics, who bounced back in Game 3, the fallout continued into a double-digit Game 4 collapse where Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles. That further altered the 2025-26 season, which Tatum will miss most if not all of, and Al Horford reportedly departed the Celtics in part due to the injury. Boston shed most of their luxury tax commitment and dodged the second apron, setting up a reset season where they’ve floated around .500.

Bridges and others around the league haven’t counted out the Celtics yet, though. He credited Joe Mazzulla for instilling a mental toughness in the team, who reached within single-digits late after trailing by 24 points in New York. They’ve won 11-of-18 since, and only sit 2.5 games behind the Knicks in a loaded east. With Indiana, Boston and others hurting or resetting through the first quarter of the season, New York earned a golden opportunity to reach the Finals for the first time since 1999. And the Celtics continue to grapple with the chance they lost in the spring to become a dynasty.

“That wasn’t our strategy. We didn’t big brain that game,” Towns joked about the comebacks. “Game 1 showed all the improvements we’ve made not only as players, physical talents, but also mentally. I felt last year, we were such a mentally tough team that nothing bothered us or wavered us and a 20-point deficit against the champs and being in their home, that didn’t matter to us. We keep fighting … until the horn goes off and we just kept fighting and kept fighting, and we found ourselves with the horn going off with the win and Mikal got an amazing steal. Didn’t expect Game 2 to be deja vu, but it was. It just shows again, if you doubted us Game 1, we showed what we can do in Game 2 in the same situation … it just shows the mental fortitude of last year’s team.”

Celtics down Knicks at the REAL Garden, 123-117

imagn-27725151.jpg

The Boston Celtics returned home to TD Garden to face the second-placed New York Knickerbockers on Tuesday night. Both teams took turn throwing haymakers throughout the game, but it was the Celtics led by Jaylen Brown and Hugo Gonzalez who rallied the home team, as Boston won their 12th game of the year, 123-117.

Derrick White and Neemias Queta returned to the starting lineup for Boston after a night off in Cleveland on Sunday. Miles McBride started in the back court alongside Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns rounded out the lineup for the Knicks. OG Anunoby was still unavailable for New York due to hamstring strain. Hart knocked down a corner triple for the game’s opening score, and Brunson marched up the corner after a Celtic turnover and calmly nailed his first three-pointer as the Knicks came out the steadier of the two teams.

Boston had three uncharacteristic early turnovers to start the game as Brown was whistled for a foul boxing out KAT who tumbled to ground. New York were the more decisive team to start the clash as they went up twelve early with a 14-2 lead. New York had multiple shot attempts to start the game as the more active team on the glass with 5 early team assists and 4 early three-point makes with a 17-4 lead before Joe Mazzulla had seen enough and called a timeout.

Jaylen Brown hit his first field goal of the game at the seven-minute mark of the game on a steady mid-range jumper over Jalen Brunson. Pritchard found Neemias Queta for a pretty roll and lob dunk for Boston’s eighth point, Celtics trailed 8-19 early. Jordan Walsh showed his athleticism early on a tip-in follow off a Jaylen Brown miss.

New York were white hot shooting in the first quarter going 6-9 from deep to take an early 25-14 lead. Josh Minott, Anfernee Simons and Sam Hauser were the first C’s off the bench as Prichard, Queta and Walsh rested. Jaylen Brown was the focus of plenty of Knick defensive attention and had 4 early turnovers and 2 quick fouls as the lengthy New York wings were troubling him.

Boston went with the hack-a-Mitchell playoff approach late in the first quarter, which really stagnated play but didn’t generate any additional points for the home team. Anfernee Simons hit his first three-pointer shot with thirty seconds to go in the quarter to break a long scoring drought for Boston. New York took a double-digit lead into the break, up 32-21 after one.

Hugo Gonzalez scored his first points of the game to start the 2nd quarter as he strolled into the key and grabbed a bobbling rebound to score on a reverse layup. Payton Pritchard got free of Josh Hart and caught a sweet pass from Brown and laid the ball up for Boston with a one handed move. Jaylen Brown took advantage of a missed New York defensive rotation and drove into the lane for uncontested tomahawk jam.

imagn-27725151.jpg

Gonzalez stayed down on a second KAT shot attempt and stole the ball from the big man which resulted in a Jaylen Brown layup, New York up 39-31. Brown was then started to feel it and he hit his first three-pointer of the game as he maneuvered around a big Queta screen to get the Knick lead back to just 5 points. Brown scored 9 straight points in this stretch as Boston fans started to come alive with Gonzalez, Pritchard, Queta and Simons on the court with him.

The second quarter was pretty much all Jaylen Brown after a disappointing first quarter, as the former Finals MVP put the team on his back and had his hand in everything. Derrick White joined in on the act hitting a sidestep three-pointer which bounced around the rim and eventually drop through the net. Brown was not done, he dribbled all the way through three Knick defenders and skied for the loud two-handed rim rocker over Jordan Clarkson as Boston finally took the lead 47-46.

imagn-27725131.jpg

Rookie Hugo Gonzalez played the entire second quarter and was equally important for the Celtics hustle to help fuel a bounce back performance, the nineteen-year-old had multiple steals and forced turnovers and did the little things. Boston flipped the script on the game behind Jaylen Brown’s 18 second quarter points, as the home team took a 58-52 lead at the half.

Boston started the second half with a pair of triples from Brown and Pritchard. Payton was starting to get going. Pritchard dribbled into the key for a step back two-point bucket as Boston opened up scoring 10 points to New York’s 5 points to start the half. New York eventually steadied in the third to cut the lead back to 6 points as McBride nailed a three-pointer and Mikal Bridges was scoring for the road team, as he converted on 13 points in the quarter.

Brown kept up the scoring touch rolling well into the third posting his 33rd point of the night with a turnaround jumper over Josh Hart in the low block. KAT drilled two tough shots on the interior for New York as they tried to keep pace with Boston.

Jaylen Brown was in his bag in the third hitting his 37th point of the contest over Mitchell Robinson as the Boston faithful were getting loud. A Derrick White three-pointer capped a 12-0 Celtic run to end the quarter, Boston in complete control, 94-76.

The Knicks shifted strategies to start the 4th quarter with a double big lineup of Robinson and Towns. Hugo Gonzalez was not afraid of the tall timber as he drove past an outstretched Towns for a lay in. Jordan Clarkson converted on a 4-point play, Kolek drove and hit a floater, as New York went on it’s own 9-0 run to get it back to 96-87.

Sammy Hauser came out of a TV timeout and drained a logo triple to stop the bleeding for Boston. Anfernee Simons then collected up a Pritchard deflected ball from an out of control KAT dribble and he drove the entire court to convert on layup, Boston up 102-87. New York went on another run, this time 12-0 as Gonzalez was whistled for a flagrant foul on a Jordan Clarkson three-pointer, before Bridges hit his sixth three of the game and 24th point.

Minott hit a corner triple and Jordan Walsh hit on back-to-back strong interior buckets to keep NY at arms length, 109-101. Walsh then stole a cross court pass and snagged an offensive board to give Boston a few scoring attempts. Derrick White laced his fourth three of the game as Boston retained the lead 112-107 as New York was throwing everything it had at Boston.

A tough Mikal Bridges three-pointer over Minott cut Boston’s lead to 3, before Walsh flashed from the arc and drove and converted on a strong contested layup. Jaylen Brown hit a pair of free throw’s with 1 minute 45 to go in the game. Brunson was in Struggletown all game as he went 6-21 from the field with 3 turnovers on the night. Boston held on in the final minute behind a desperate Jordan Walsh rebound and a Derrick White loose ball dive to secure possession.

The Celtics next face the Washington Wizards on Thursday night.

Celtics could be without star in game against Wizards

gettyimages-2245729992.jpg

Jaylen Brown is doubtful to play in Thursday’s game against the Washington Wizards, the Celtics announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Celtics star is dealing with a non-COVID illness. Outside of Brown, the team’s injury report is clear, with both Derrick White (right calf contusion) and Neemias Queta (left ankle sprain) both off the injury report after missing Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. (Jayson Tatum, of course, remains out as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles).

Brown has yet to miss a game this season and is averaging 29 points, 6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.1 steals across 21 games so far this season. He is fresh off a season-high 42-point outing against the Knicks, in which he exploded for 33 points in the second and third quarters. Over his past five games, Brown is averaging 34 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Brown has dealt with a myriad of injuries this season, suffering a hamstring strain in preseason and dealing with low back spasms last week. But, so far, he’s suited every night and has made clear he’s eager to play as much as he possibly can.

“You see a lot of guys getting injured around the league,” Brown said last month. “I want to play as many games as I possibly can.”

The Celtics could choose to give Brown the night off, in part given that the Wizards game is on the first night of a back-to-back. After playing in Washington DC on Thursday, the Celtics will host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night at TD Garden.

At 15-5, the Lakers have the league’s third-best record, anchored by elite play from Luka Doncic (35.3 points, 8.9 assists, 8.9 rebounds per game) and Austin Reaves (28.1 points, 6.6 assists per game).

The Wizards, meanwhile, have the Eastern Conference’s worst record at 3-17. They’ve been led by Alex Sarr (19.1 points, 8.6 rebounds), CJ McCollum (18 points), and Kyshawn George (15.2 points).

If Brown is to miss Thursday’s game, the Celtics could choose from a slew of players to insert into the starting lineup: Sam Hauser, Josh Minott, and Hugo Gonzalez all seem like possible candidates.

Should the Celtics trade for Nic Claxton?

gettyimages-2247927611.jpg

A couple of weeks ago, Jeff Clark explored the possibility of the C’s trading for former All-Star Domantas Sabonis. His box score stuffing brand of basketball was enticing, but ultimately both he and the CelticsBlog comment section weren’t super enthused at the idea of adding the Sacramento Kings five-man.

That doesn’t mean that the Celtics shouldn’t look to improve the frontcourt though. Neemias Queta has exceeded most people’s expectations, NikNBA aside, to start the season and should be thought of as a long term piece for Boston. Behind him, the front court isn’t the most inspiring. Rather than remind you of Luka Garza’s struggles, let’s jump straight to the subject of today’s “Should we trade for?”: Nic Claxton.

The overview

A 2019 draftee, Nic Claxton has had somewhat of a reemergent year for a god-awful Brooklyn Nets team this season. He’s 26 years old and is putting up a respectable statline of 13.3 PPG, 7.3 REB, and 3.9 AST on 55.5% from the field. Many C’s fans would have been reminded of Claxton’s value during our NBA Cup loss to the Nets back on the 21st of November. Clax posted his first ever NBA triple double and was a +18 in an eight-point win over the Celtics. If you want a breakdown of that game, check out Lucas Kaplan’s breakdown below. Absolutely worth a watch if you’re looking to become a Clax acolyte:

never thought i'd say these words but

The Deal

fanspo-nba-trade-machine-snap_h_30-11-2025_18-08-46.jpeg

Pour one out for Anfernee Simons. He’s always going to be involved in fake trades on Celtics sites and this article is no different.

Why Boston does it

While Neemias Queta has been a brilliant surprise thus far for Boston this season, I cannot help but feel that they are still short in the frontcourt. Claxton possesses a number of the qualities that Boston bigs have exhibited in the past, and he could make for a fun fit next to Tatum in the front court next season. The Brooklyn big man is one of the more mobile bigs in the NBA, and he could fit into a switching scheme that suits Tatum and Brown well. Think 2022 Rob Williams with a little less bulk. I almost view Claxton as an amalgamation of Horford and Williams on the defensive end, albeit not a Frankensteinian mismatch of all their best traits.

Claxton is a good rim protector. Claxton is a good man defender. Claxton is a good passer. He is not an outlier in any one facet of defense, but that ability to play many roles is arguably his greatest strength. I can envision a run through the East where Claxton has to switch out onto the Jalen Brunsons of this world in one round, and battle down low with a Jalen Duren in the next.

On the offensive end, Claxton played the low-usage, high-efficiency rim runner role earlier in his career to great effect. In two seasons flanked by Durant, Harden, and Kyrie, Clax regularly posted seasons touching a true shooting percentage of 70 percent. Claxton’s career year came in 22/23, and that season he recorded 1.7 drives, shot 71 percent from the field, and recorded a BPM of 3.1, largely owing to his titanic impact on the defensive end.

In more recent seasons, Jordi Fernandez has enabled Claxton to drive and act as a handoff hub. In 25/26, Clax’s drives have more than tripled since the 22/23 season. He is recording 5.5 a game. Coupled with a career-best 4 assists per game, you can see that on both sides of the court he can wear different hats depending on team context and matchup.

There is a career deficiency on the glass in comparison with fellow big men, but you would assume that sharing the court with one of Tatum, Walsh, Minott, or even Payton Pritchard, all position plus rebounders, his shortcomings on the glass could be masked.

Overall, there is a compelling case that he could be an asset on both sides of the court. He is a player who doesn’t demand touches but can soak them up if needed. He is a player who does not need a defensive scheme built around him. He is a player whose versatility could port well to the postseason if he is flanked by a talented roster. I can’t help but profile Claxton as Timelord. Rob Williams had a similar playstyle to Claxton back in his C’s days but had a little more ex-factor than our prospective trade target does. A Williams/Walton comparison piece may be lurking in the drafts…

Why Brooklyn does it

You will notice I do not have any first round picks or even young pieces going back to Barclays in this scenario. Nets fans have all commented in disgust by now, but Brooklyn could have reason to consider a salary dump and second round picks. The Nets currently project to have 44 million dollars in cap space next season, which is good enough for fifth in the Association. To me, Brooklyn feel far enough away from contention that opening up a further 23 million dollars in space, Nic’s salary for 26/27, and repeating this cap-space plan next offseason could be beneficial long term.

At 26 years old, Claxton is in his prime, but the Nets are two years away from being two years away. Even if the franchise views this as a neutral contract, it should be understood that by the time that matters, they would have to sign a Claxton in his late twenties to an extension. The six-year Net vet deserves a chance to compete in a playoff setting, and Brooklyn could gain more assets than the three seconds they have coming their way in this deal by using the additional salary space opened up by a move to get off the Claxton deal. Oh, and Anfernee Simons would be fun under Jordi Fernandez.

The verdict

I hope I have made a compelling argument for a Claxton trade. Believe me, if he arrived in February, I would be excited for the next 18 months or so, but I do have some doubts around this deal. Versatility is a postseason buzzword, but there is something to be said for special skills. Claxton is so good at so many facets of the game, but I would argue we have not seen him be truly great at any one aspect since 22/23.

The offensive ability to handle and facilitate from the elbows is more valuable to a team like Brooklyn, short on perimeter talent and short on shot creation, than it would be to a stacked Celtics roster in 2026. I expect that in closing lineups we would be watching Clax fulfill a lower-usage role akin to the start of his career, as opposed to making decisions when it matters most.

On the other end of the court, I would worry about the rebounding shortcomings in a league becoming increasingly focused on fighting for second chances off the glass. Is he strong enough to battle down low with true post powerhouses? Are his rim-protection chops at risk of being left behind in an outer-space race that more frequently than ever sees unicorn seven footers manning the paint with wingspans that dwarf the Georgia alumnus?

Claxton would no doubt make for an upgrade to the front court. Despite Neemias’ breakout, he would man the starting spot at a true starter level. However, to me, it feels like the kind of move that limits the Celtics ceiling. His contract is fine, but that is all it will ever be. Given the gluttony of salary on the books, I think that the 20-plus million dollar salary slot would be better spent on a player with a standout quality. Claxton would provide an upgrade over Queta, but he is not ten times the player Q is. It is the kind of move that makes sense on paper. It reads nicely. Instant trade reactions may even feature the words “Nets” and “fleeced” in the headlines.

All that being said, Boston does not want to be good, very good, or really really good. They want to be great. In TD Garden we hang banners, and Claxton ultimately does not fill me with the belief that we would be favorites to hang #19 any time soon.

Let me know your thoughts down below. Is Claxton the man for the five spot, or should Boston keep their powder dry if Sean Marks starts calling?

Jordan Walsh is different — and Celtics win over Wizards showed why

gettyimages-2249351824.jpg

WASHINGTON D.C. — For the vast majority of basketball players, nothing is more energizing than scoring. The sound of the ball swishing through the net. The points on the scoreboard. The dejected look on the opponent’s face. The rousing cheers.

It’s no secret; how many times have you heard coaches lament how missed shots impacted their team’s energy and effort in a defeat?

But for 21-year-old Jordan Walsh, it’s exactly the opposite.

It’s big defensive plays that get him up, that fill him with adrenaline.

The offense? He hardly even notices it.

“Honestly, I be forgetting what happened on offense,” Walsh said with a smile after the Celtics’ 146-101 win over the Washington Wizards. “Like, when I score, I lowkey forget what happened. I’m so focused on getting back on defense, so then it leaves my mind. But whenever I get a steal and a dunk, or like a steal and a rebound, that stays with me. I don’t know why.”

Asked Jordan Walsh about what energizes him most on the court:

“Honestly, I be forgetting what happens on offense. When I score, I lowkey forget what happened, I’m so focused on getting back on defense… defense always sticks with me.”

“If I hit a shot, I never celebrate.” pic.twitter.com/sMdwz8NIpy

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) December 5, 2025

That defense-first mindset propelled Walsh toward the most pivotal month of his basketball career. In early November, the Arkansas product was accruing DNPs, and seemed to be on the cusp of a third-straight season completely out of the Celtics’ rotation.

Then, he broke through. First, it was productive garbage time minutes against the Houston Rockets. Then playing big-time minutes off the bench in back-to-back games in Orlando.

Since November 12th, Walsh has started 10 consecutive games. And, the Celtics are 8-2 in that span, best of any team in the Eastern Conference.

Walsh’s defensive impact has been almost revolutionary for Boston; whether the assignment was Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, Paolo Banchero, or Jaren Jackson Jr, he’s excelled.

Joe Mazzulla credited Walsh for the tone he set on the defensive end in the victory over the Wizards, in which he was largely tasked with guarding Khris Middleton. He racked up two steals and a block.

JORDAN WALSH STEAL & DUNK 😤 pic.twitter.com/Z0Hsrw03HO

— CELTICS ☘️ BANNER 19 (@BiggLynch) December 5, 2025

“He was unscreenable,” said the Celtics head coach. “He did a great job making plays defensively.”

But there was another noteworthy element to Walsh’s big night. Alongside his defense, Walsh managed to do the one thing he’s been least focused on so far as a pro: score in bunches.

The third-year Celtic finished the game with a career-best 22 points, pouring in 13 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting in the second quarter. He followed that up with 7 points in the third quarter, before sitting for the entire fourth, the game out of reach. When he checked out for good, Walsh received a raucous ovation from a Capital One Arena crowd inundated with Celtics fans.

Fittingly, he was hardly aware of his own scoring throughout the game.

“In the game, I didn’t feel like I was scoring that much, which is weird,” he said. “But I looked up and saw it, and was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’”

When Walsh was drafted in 2023, the Celtics hoped he could blossom into a defensive specialist. But now, he’s beginning to show some offensive flashes; in his last 10 games, he’s averaging 8.2 points, shooting 60% from the field.

On the season, he’s shooting a very respectable 37% from three.

But when Walsh thinks about momentum, he doesn’t think about how one three-pointer leads to the next, or how a handful of buckets can turn into a 20+ point night.

Instead, he considers how one defensive stop leads to the next, how a steal might rattle an opponent.

“If I press up, and press up on you and get a steal, then the next three possessions I’m going to do the same thing, and I’m going to try and get another steal,” Walsh said. “If I get another one, it’s another three more possessions — I’m just going to keep doing it until it stops working. I’m gonna eat off of it. The team feels the energy off of it.”

For those on the outside, it may feel like Walsh’s leap came out of nowhere

But in the eyes of Joe Mazzulla and the Celtics, it’s long been brewing behind the scenes. Walsh’s work ethic, professionalism, and attention to detail have long stood out.

“The games are the most important, and that’s what you guys cover the most,” Mazzulla said. “But if we shoot around at 10:30, the workout that starts at 9:45 is just as important as the game. The 30 minutes before practice are just as important. The way you do a shootaround is as important, [or] a film session. He’s chipped away at just taking advantage of every possible moment that he knows he has to get better. And so it hasn’t come as a surprise at all. He takes it very seriously. If it’s a 15-minute workout, a 30-minute workout, he takes that seriously.”

Derrick White said that Walsh has consistently improved, and that is the first time he’s had a real on-court chance.

“This league’s all about opportunity,” White said. “And I wouldn’t really say he’s had much of an opportunity his first two years. And so, he’s got it now — and he’s definitely making the most of it.”

For Walsh, on-court success as an NBA starter is becoming a new normal. His offensive ceiling remains to be seen; it seems that right now, he’s outdoing himself every week.

But, irrespective of a career-scoring night, Walsh remains most energized by his own defense. It’s the stops, the deflections, the blocks, and the steals that make him tick:

“If I just hit a shot, I never celebrate. I always just immediately run back,” Walsh said.

“It’s weird for me, but that’s how it happens. I just kind of forget and then move on to defense. And then defense always sticks with me.”

Celtics cruise past shorthanded Lakers, 126-105, to win 4th straight

imagn-27749231.jpg

With Jayson Tatum, LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Marcus Smart all sidelined, this watered-down version of Celtics-Lakers didn’t carry quite the same weight as many others over the years.

But, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jordan Walsh and Payton Pritchard ensured Celtics fans still got their money’s worth. Brown led the way with 30 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. White added 19 points, Walsh 18 and Pritchard 15 to highlight a convincing all-around effort.

The Celtics, who have now won nine of 11, kept it rolling with a resounding, 126-105, triumph Friday night at TD Garden.

After throttling the lowly Wizards by 45 in Washington the night prior, Boston maintained its status as one of the best teams in basketball in recent weeks. The Lakers still had Austin Reaves (36 points) and Deandre Ayton, and they’re currently the No. 2 seed in the West, so this was no cakewalk on paper.

The Celtics (14-9) jumped out to an early 19-7 lead, as White splashed three 3-pointers and Brown found Jordan Walsh inside for an and-one. Anfernee Simons and Josh Minott kept it rolling, helping Boston take a commanding 39-17 edge through 1.

Boston shot 64 percent and racked up 13 assists on 14 field goals. The Lakers (16-6) shot just 23 percent and had three assists. Brown, who finished the quarter with four assists, breezed past defenders and made the extra pass for layups and 3’s.

With James (sciatica/arthritis), Doncic (birth of child) and Smart (back) all sidelined, the Lakers looked lost on both ends. The Celtics took advantage, spraying the ball around and consistently turning down good shots for great ones.

Rui Hachimura and the Lakers made a bit of noise late in the half, but Walsh and Sam Hauser finished strong as Boston preserved a 69-46 edge heading to the break. The Celtics didn’t take their shorthanded opponent lightly and played with hunger, poise and energy.

Brown caught fire early in the third, matching White’s mark in the first half with three straight triples. Lakers coach JJ Redick mixed and matched, searching for answers, yet the Lakers remained overmatched no matter which buttons he pressed.

The Lakers made a mini run to cut it to 17 midway through the quarter before the Celtics answered with a deep Pritchard 3 and Brown layup to reclaim momentum. After a 36-28 Los Angeles third quarter, Boston led, 97-82, through three. Brown paced the Celtics with 15 in the third, scoring more than half their points.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla went small to start the fourth, with Josh Minott and Walsh out there together, and the Celtics extended the margin to 103-82 with 9:55 remaining. White got an extremely fortuitous role on another 3, as the ball soared high in the air, hit the rim twice, then fell through the hoop.

Austin Reaves continued to try to will the Lakers back, but Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez provided the finishing touches on a smooth Celtics win.

Next up is a matchup with the Raptors, this Sunday at 3:30 p.m., in Toronto.

10 takeaways as Jaylen Brown, Jordan Walsh power Celtics past Lakers

imagn-27750400.jpg

Back in mid-November, the Celtics found themselves sitting with a 5-7 record – still searching for consistency, struggling to close out tight games and trying to find their identity.

Since that point, they’ve looked like a mature and battle-tested team that has the answers to the test. The Celtics are playing inspired basketball and have been one of the league’s most dangerous teams in recent weeks.

— Sean Grande (@SeanGrandePBP) December 6, 2025

After Friday’s 126-105 win over the shorthanded Lakers, they’re now 14-9 and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Here are 10 takeaways, as Boston took care of business once again to secure its fourth straight victory.

1) Easy to see JB

Jaylen Brown was once again the best player of the floor. He racked up 30 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists, highlighted by a 15-point third quarter that prevented the Lakers from coming back.

Brown got just about wherever he wanted and made the game look easy. He’s now scored 30-plus in five of Boston’s last six games and is playing with a first-team All-NBA swagger.

He lets the game come to him, sizes up the opposition then picks the perfect moment to strike.

2) No Laker trio

LeBron James (sciatica/arthritis), Luka Doncic (birth of child) and Marcus Smart (back) all missed Friday’s game.

Smart, perhaps as a subtle nod to his original NBA home, sported a black jacket with green spots. He posed for pictures with fans and genuinely looked delighted to be back in Boston.

The Lakers were shorthanded, yes, but the Celtics deserve credit for not taking their opponent lightly and leaving no doubt.

3) Assist-ematic wear-down

The Celtics sizzled to start, shooting 64 percent in the first quarter and building a commanding 69-46 halftime advantage.

The ball movement was pristine, and having Brown on their side certainly didn’t hurt. They’ve now scored a combined 271 points in their last two games and haven’t finished with fewer than 115 since Nov. 21.

Boston ended up with 31 assists, and it honestly seemed like even more.

4) Jumping for Jordan

Jordan Walsh, who shot 4 for 4 on Tuesday and 8 for 8 on Thursday, kept it rolling with a 6-for-7 performance Friday night. Yes, that’s 18 for his last 19. Yes, that’s very, very good.

Walsh (17 points) is playing with supreme confidence and continues to carry himself like one of the better wing defenders in the league. His shot has come a long way, and shot selection has also played a critical role.

He also displayed his passing ability, letting a defender fly by and delivering a pinpoint wrap-around pass to Neemias Queta. Walsh deserves a great deal of credit for actualizing the potential he’s always had. Now, it’s about sustaining it.

3 BLK
3 STL

— Underdog NBA (@UnderdogNBA) December 6, 2025

5) Pritch, please

Payton Pritchard’s balance and body control have always been elite, but it feels like he’s taken it to the next level lately. His ability to create off the dribble when nothing else materializes separates him from the pack. Pritchard’s step-backs are money, his feel for the game is terrific and his touch is elite.

He hit three tough mid-range jumpers and rattled home a corner 3 in the first half, to go along with four assists. Pritchard contributed 15 points and six assists overall and served as a stabilizer all night.

6) Simple math

The Celtics shot 53 percent from 3-point range, connecting on 24 of their 45 attempts in a truly lights-out showing.

Derrick White (19 points, six assists) led the way with five, Sam Hauser and Walsh were right behind him at four and Brown and Pritchard added three each.

Eight Celtics hit a 3, and every player who attempted at least one shot at least 42.9 percent. That’s a product of great shooting, yes, but it also speaks to the ball movement and overall flow of the offense.

Lakers coach JJ Redick seemed to have an idea what was coming. Before the game, he put it well, noting: “I feel like with them, it’s a lot of math.”

The math was mathing on this particular night, as it has during most of this stretch.

7) Defending home court

It wasn’t just the offense, as the Celtics defense also executed at a high level in the win. The Lakers shot 23 percent from the floor in the first quarter and looked lost.

They started to figure it out in the third, but once they did, the Celtics responded to stop the threat almost immediately.

Having Walsh, Josh Minott and Hugo Gonzalez is a luxury, and Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla knows it. The Celtics went small early in the fourth and played the game on their terms, as they did the bulk of the game.

8) Leave it to Reaves

The only Laker who had his way most of the night was Austin Reaves, who is, in fact, as good as advertised.

He started off slowly, but ended up dropping 36 on 9-of-18 shooting. He racked up 15 free throws to go with eight assists and displayed why he’s now regarded as one of the premier offensive players in the league.

9) Jaylen’s starting 5

In a video on the Jumbotron, Brown named his all-time Celtics starting five: Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Larry Bird, Kevin Garnett and Bill Russell.

No qualms here. It’s a matter of opinion, but that’s a pretty solid list.

Jaylen's all time Celtics starting 5 … Hard to argue. Might go Jo Jo or Cousy over Rondo but peak Rondo a great choice pic.twitter.com/8su6L0y3A8

— John Karalis 🇬🇷 (@John_Karalis) December 6, 2025

10) On the rise

For a while, the Celtics looked like a team destined to finish around .500.

Now, they look like a team that could make some noise in the playoffs.

If they do, this stretch will likely be viewed as the turning point, when they turned potential into production and found a winning formula.

Celtics hold off Raptors rally to extend win streak to 5, beat Toronto 121-113

imagn-27767014.jpg

Riding a four-game win streak into a mid-Sunday affair with the Toronto Raptors (15-10), the Boston Celtics (15-9) continued building momentum with their fifth straight win, holding off a Raptors comeback attempt that led to four fourth quarter lead changes before Boston pulled away, 121-113.

With a clean bill of health outside of Jayson Tatum, the Celtics ran with a starting five of Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Jaylen Brown, Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta. The Raptors started Immanuel Quickley, Ja’Kobe Walter, Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram and Jakob Poeltl. Toronto was without starting forward RJ Barrett, who has been sidelined since Nov. 23.

Leading Boston in scoring was Jaylen Brown, who scored 30+ for a 13th time this season with 30 on 9-of-19 shooting, while the Raptors were paced by Brandon Ingram’s own 30-piece on 11-of-20 shooting. Derrick White also added 27 points with 3 blocks, knocking down 6 3-pointers.

Nearly two minutes went by with turnovers from both teams before Derrick White hit jumpers inside and beyond the 3-point arc for the game’s first five points. The Celtics took a 10-3 lead into the game’s first break, with Jaylen Brown kicking out to the corner for a Jordan Walsh 3-pointer, and following up a missed Walsh transition layup after Walsh pickpocketed Quickley.

The Celtics shot 54% from the field with 6 made threes in the first quarter, led by a hot start from White, who had 14 points and 3-of-5 shooting from three in the opening period.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) December 7, 2025

After Anfernee Simons beat Scottie Barnes off the dribble for a runner with 14 seconds left, the Celtics took a 34-26 lead into the second quarter. Walsh had three steals in the game’s first four minutes, while Brown added an early 7 points on 3-of-4 shooting.

The Celtics went with a unique smallball lineup early in the second quarter, utilizing Hugo Gonzalez alongside Sam Hauser, Simons, Pritchard and Brown. Gonzalez immediately made an impact, drilling a 3-pointer for his first shot, and driving the baseline into a two-handed dunk for a 55-45 Celtics lead halfway through the quarter.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) December 7, 2025

In the second quarter, Boston got its lead up to as many as 22 points, continuing to fire on all cylinders with 57% shooting in the half while scoring 14 fast break points and forcing Toronto into committing eight turnovers.

They took a 77-59 lead into halftime, with Brown catching fire in the second quarter, scoring 10 of his 17 points, while Hauser drilled three of his six 3-point attempts for 9 points off the bench. Walsh added 9 points in the half, highlighted by an impressive putback dunk.

Boston continued to dominate in the opening minutes of the second half, starting with a quick 4 points and a steal from Queta, along with Brown stepping back for a top-of-the-arc triple in the face of Poeltl while assisting on a Pritchard three for an 87-64 lead nearly four minutes into the third quarter.

— Robby Fletcher (@RFletcher_VT) December 7, 2025

The Raptors ramped up their on-ball pressure in response, whittling down the Celtics lead to as low as four behind a combined 25 points from Ingram, Quickley and Ochai Agbaji. The Raptors used a 23-4 run to cut the lead down, though late-quarter threes from White and Simons settled things down and kept Boston in front 97-91 heading into the fourth quarter.

An A.J Lawson three cut the Celtics lead down to just one point 44 seconds into the fourth quarter, and a Jamal Shead steal-and-finish gave them their first lead of the game with just over 10:30 left. The Celtics missed their first seven shots of the quarter, until White hit a late shot-clock three to tie the game as 102-102.

Right after, White found Pritchard for another three, lifting Boston back up to a 105-102 lead for the fourth lead change of the quarter’s first five minutes. White found Pritchard again to push the lead to six with 6:30 remaining, making a cross-court pass in transition to find an open Pritchard for his second 3-pointer of the quarter.

White made another huge play out of a timeout, drilling a 32-foot pull-up bomb for a 113-104 lead. He continued to make an impact with another pull-up jumper, this time near the elbow to bring the Celtics lead back up to 10. White had 8 points in the quarter on 3-of-7 shooting.

— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) December 7, 2025

The Raptors got the deficit down to six in the final minute, but Boston’s defense got the necessary stops, and their shooters converted from the free throw line to hold off Toronto’s comeback.

The Celtics will remain on the road on Thursday, when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks (10-15) at 8 p.m.

Jaylen Brown generates so much offense

gettyimages-2249985745.jpg

The Boston Celtics have surged into third place in the Eastern Conference after holding off the Toronto Raptors on the road, winning 121-113. Boston has now won 10 of its last 12 games and boasts the league’s best offensive rating over that span.

Jaylen Brown has continued to set the tone for the Celtics, and Sunday evening was no exception. He delivered 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists against the Raptors, once again showcasing his all-around impact. We’ve always known Brown to be an elite scorer, but his playmaking has stood out especially in this latest performance.

Brown only had five assists, but that was not indicative of how many shots he created though four of those were for three-pointers. He had seven potential assists, and he continued to make the correct read when he saw help.

The first play highlights one of Toronto’s central defensive principles in this matchup: loading help at or near the nail to discourage drives from the top of the key. On this possession, Brown attacks and runs straight into Jakobe Walter, who steps over to provide help and, in doing so, leaves Derrick White wide open on the perimeter for a clean three-point look.

View Link

Brown in this one starts the offense with some defense. Jordan Walsh plays dodgeball with Neemias Queta for a second, but the ball eventually finds Brown. What’s important is that Brown is always in attack mode. Even on plays where someone is slightly open, he elects to drive away from them to create an even cleaner look. He took one dribble to the paint away from Payton Pritchard and that shifted Walter and Jakob Poeltl, opening the behind the back pass even more.

View Link

Here, the Celtics run a Spain pick-and-roll (backscreen on ball screener’s man).

Screenshot-2025-12-06-at-3.28.08%E2%80%AFPM.png

As Queta sets the ball screen on the left side, you can see Poeltl go to that side preparing for Brown. Brown sees that and spins the other way rejecting the screen. This allows him to get a step on Scottie Barnes and drive downhill. The drives forces help from the corner, and JB delivers the ball to Walsh for the three.

View Link

On this play, the Celtics run “77”, which is two consecutive on-ball screens. The Celtics call this “Double.” They create two switches this play, but a theme with Barnes you’ll see is that he never wanted to switch off Brown. Here he does everything but switch onto Brown to stay close to him and give Hugo Gonzalez and open three.

View Link

Celtics go to Spain PnR again on this one, but Pritchard sees that Poeltl, the player he’s supposed to screen, is hedging on Brown so he spaces to the wing. What this does is make Immanuel Quickley the tagger. “Tagging” on defense in the pick and roll is when someone bumps the roller or gets in their way momentarily, so they don’t give up an open layup and give time for their teammate to get back. The problem is Quickley is a guard, and the roller is usually a big who can finish.

Barnes and Poeltl stay on Brown for a second, and he gets the pass on time to Queta. I felt Queta had an opportunity to go up over Quickley or hit Walsh on the cut. He does end up making a solid enough play getting it to Pritchard for a three, but this all starts with Brown getting two on him and hitting the roll.

View Link

Celtics run a simple pick and roll here, and the same thing happens. Poeltl hedges making Brown take a step back, but since this is only for Barnes to get back on to Brown, that means Queta has an opening. Brown gets it to him on the short roll, and he scores.

View Link

Brown just takes advantage of the strength difference and moves Walter into the paint with his shoulder. This causes Quickley to help off Pritchard, and Brown sprays it out to him.

View Link

Yet another spray out to a shooter because Brown is a relentless attacker.

View Link

Lastly, the Celtics Killer Whale offense targeting Quickley and Poeltl settled them down when the Raptors stormed back. Some plays it took more than one time to get Barnes to get off Brown, but here Pritchard does a nice job forcing the separation. But again, Barnes doesn’t switch onto someone else. He decides to linger around Brown, and now the Celtics have a numerical advantage. They just play basketball after that.
