Cavs Summer League: Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Jaylon Tyson shine in loss to Pacers

Tomlin and Tyson looked good.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Jaylon Tyson were the day one standouts as the Cleveland Cavaliers narrowly lost to the Indiana Pacers. The team might have fallen short, but Tyson and Tomlin opened up the 2025 NBA Summer League with a bang.

Cleveland led by double-digits early on this game in large part due to Tomlin’s offensive eruption. He began the game on fire, nailing a pair of three-pointers and ramming through defenders on his way to the rim. Tomlin finished with a game-high 30 points in 27 minutes.

Tomlin’s unorthodox development has made him an interesting prospect. He didn’t even begin playing organized basketball until after high school. At 24 years old, his runway for improvement could be longer than most players of his age.

It’s best not to get carried away. But seeing Tomlin attack space and utilize his length to finish around defenders was reassuring. He looked like he didn’t belong in Vegas. I mean that in the most complementary way possible.

Tyson deserves credit for setting the stage. He embraced the role of distributor tonight — dishing 12 assists after Craig Porer Jr. left with a hamstring injury. Tyson was operating the pick-and-roll at a high level and served Tomlin a handful of easy layups throughout the game. Tyson also made a few three-pointers off the catch, which was encouraging to see.

Being good in Summer League isn’t a guarantee that you’ll make an NBA rotation. But it’s a good starting point. It’s far more important not to be bad than it is to be good, at this level. A poor performance in Vegas could easily mean more than a good one.

Rookies Saliou Niang and Tyrese Proctor made their Summer League debuts. Proctor popped early as an off-ball threat, drilling a duo of catch-and-shoot three-pointers in the first half. This is a natural skill that will translate well to the modern NBA. However, Proctor struggled heavily in the second half when the ball was in his hands. He had a difficult time handling opposing ball pressure and was consistently bottled up. This will be an area of concern moving forward.

Niang was an effective energy guy in this game. His hustle began to make a huge difference in the second half as Indiana rallied back to eventually steal this game. Niang made a handful of defensive plays and corralled an offensive rebound to keep the Pacers at bay for most of the fourth quarter. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough.

Cleveland dropped this game in the final minutes. Not having a true point guard to beat the full-court pressure bit them once again. Sometimes, history really does repeat itself.

The Cavs play their second game of the Summer League on Saturday at 3:30 pm.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin continues to impress in Cavs’ 92-83 win over Bucks

2025 NBA Summer League - Cleveland Cavaliers v Milwaukee Bucks

Tomlin is on a roll.

The Cleveland Cavaliers built a huge lead and learned how to hold onto it this time in a 92-83 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. This is their first win of the 2025 NBA Summer League.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin has been a roaring success in these two games. He scored a game-high 30 points against Indiana and added 21 more today on blistering efficiency. Tomlin is shooting a combined 21-28 across both games and has found no resistance getting to the rim. You can’t ask for much more. Tomlin is currently on a two-way deal with the Cavs. If he continues to play like this, he’ll be converted to a standard deal in no time.

Tomlin’s handle as a 6’10” forward makes him a dynamic scoring threat. His motor was on full display today as he relentlessly put pressure on the defense to protect the rim. Rounding out into a better defender is the next step. Cleaning the glass for 13 rebounds (8 defensive) is one way to become an impactful defensive player.

Jaylon Tyson continued to fill in for Craig Porter Jr. at the point guard position. His performance today was not as stellar as the one before. He dished out 12 assists against Indiana — but only notched 3 dimes today. He shot 3-13 from the floor and was overall less effective on the ball.

Tyson was still able to be impactful, though. He forced his way to the free throw line 10 times and converted nine of his attempts. His deliberate attacks turned into 18 points overall despite the inefficient shooting from the floor.

Tyrese Proctor was a bit better in this role. He handed out 4 assists and only turned the ball over once. He still isn’t getting around defenders one-on-one but he managed to attack a few closeouts and turn the corner on dribble-hand-offs more than before. Proctor shot 3-8 from downtown and finished with 12 points.

Cleveland State alum puts on a show in huge Cavs Summer League victory

2025 NBA Summer League - Cleveland Cavaliers v Milwaukee Bucks

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Tristan Enaruna was a standout.

The Cleveland Cavaliers (or more specifically, Tristan Enaruna) nearly turned Las Vegas Summer League into a full-blown dunk contest. The Cleveland State University alumni put on a show of breathtaking dunks as the Cavs routed Miami 92-72 in their third game of the Summer.

Enaruna played two seasons with Cleveland State after previous stints with Iowa State and Kansas State. He averaged a career-high 19.9 points in his Senior year with the Vikings. His athleticism has made him a standout in Vegas.

The Cavs built a lofty lead in the third quarter. Largely due to Tyson rattling off a huge scoring run all on his own. As a result — the runway cleared for Enaruna to steal the spotlight. He threw down a number of highlight dunks as the game neared garbage time.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM.@TristanEnaruna has had THREE MONSTER DUNKS during this #CavsHeat match-up! #LetEmKnow pic.twitter.com/SvZDMrsipw

— Cleveland Cavaliers (@cavs) July 14, 2025

Enaruna has ground to cover as a prospect. He isn’t a very good three-point shooter and he doesn’t wow you in any particular category, aside from athleticism. But tonight — that was enough for 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. If he keeps it up, Enaruna could make a run for Cleveland’s final two-way slot.

Did we mention Tyson went on a scoring run? He scored seven unanswered points early in the third quarter to spark a huge Cavalier lead. His confidence was bursting at the seams as Tyson flowed into multiple three-point shots in the second half. The sophomore prospect finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block.

JT JUST WENT ON A 7-POINT RUN. @jaylontyson | #LetEmKnow pic.twitter.com/LciH9b05Hd

— Cleveland Cavaliers (@cavs) July 14, 2025

All signs point towards Tyson being too good for the Summer League. This was the case last year, as well, when Tyson showed similar dominance. But this time it feels more polished. It’s possible he’ll play a larger role with the Cavs this season.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Tyrese Proctor were quiet tonight. Tomlin had just 11 points on 4-10 shooting while Proctor struggled a bit more, going 3-13 from the floor. There’s not much to learn here. Both players had a poor shooting night; it’s bound to happen.

Cleveland plays its fourth game of the Summer League on Wednesday. After that, they’ll begin the tournament games.

LeBron James Watch 2025: Timeline of events

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Lakers

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

An updating timeline of how the Cavs fit into LeBron’s strange summer.

LeBron James’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers seems to be reaching a crossroads. At the moment, the only remaining question is how long this will drag out.

The Cleveland Cavaliers would seem to be the logical choice for James if he were to end his career outside of LA. He spent 11 seasons with the team, he’s from the area, and the Cavs have a championship-caliber team on paper that hasn’t translated to the playoffs yet. James could be the missing piece that gets them over the hump.

We don’t know how this situation is going to play out. It’s still more likely that LeBron plays the 2025-26 season with the Lakers and moves on elsewhere afterward. That said, this wasn’t a conversation I was expecting to have last month.

Below is an updated timeline of events that have led us to the point of wondering whether James could return to the team that drafted him 21 years ago.

June 29 - LeBron opts into his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers for 2025-26

Somehow, LeBron's decision to opt into his contract with the Lakers sparked this whole thing. James’s agent, Rich Paul, released a cryptic statement along with the opt-in announcement that made it clear his client wasn’t exactly thrilled with what he was seeing from the Lakers.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul said via an article from ESPN’s Shams Charania. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

Paul’s quote made it seem that James was opting into the money and out of the Lakers, which isn’t exactly how these contracts work.

June 30 - Paul tries to clarify that James isn’t asking for a trade

The next day, Paul tried to clean things up by saying that his client wasn’t asking for a trade. But, again, he didn’t exactly give his full support to the Lakers, which is what you’d expect if you’re going to try to clear this situation up.

NBA Insider Chris Haynes said that there weren’t any trade or extension talks with Los Angeles.

"There has been no trade talk, there has been no extension talk."@ChrisBHaynes reports on his recent call with Rich Paul and rumors around LeBron's future in Los Angeles pic.twitter.com/GmyQf8xkXW

— NBA TV (@NBATV) June 30, 2025

Dave McMenamin of ESPN relayed that Paul claimed four teams reached out about a possible LeBron trade, but that his client was waiting to see how the Lakers roster looked after free agency.

Rich Paul also told ESPN he informed both Rob Pelinka and Lara Beth Seager, Luka Doncic's business manager, about LeBron James' intent to pick up his option and the statement he planned to release before it happened Sunday. "No one was blindsided," Paul said. https://t.co/ZZeuV1JSbd

— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) July 1, 2025

July 1 and 2 - Rob Pelinka makes some unserious Lakers signings

Paul made it clear that he wanted to see if the Lakers could put together a title-contending team around Luka Doncic and LeBron — which seems like it wouldn’t be too hard to do considering those building blocks.

Instead, Pelinka went out and let key role player Dorian Finney-Smith walk out the door and then signed Jake LaRavia (averaged 6.1 points last season with the Sacramento Kings) and Deandre Ayton (someone who hasn’t applied himself on the court in at least four years).

These aren’t the moves that you would make if you were a team actively trying to win next season. Instead, they were moves made likely with the intention of preserving cap space for 2027.

July 2 - LeBron posts a photo playing golf in Northeast Ohio wearing a Welcome Home hat

James is from Akron and visits the area in the summer. Playing golf with friends isn’t really a story. But then again, with LeBron, everything seems to have some sort of meaning. Or at the very least, he doesn’t shy away from dropping not-so-subtle hints.

— ESPN Cleveland (@ESPNCleveland) July 2, 2025

July 3 - LeBron reposts a photo of Allie Clifton wearing a LeBron Cavs jersey

Clifton used to be a sideline reporter for the Cavs and co-hosts the Road Trippin’ podcast with former players Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye.

She posted a picture on Instagram wearing an old LeBron Cavs jersey. James then reposted the picture on his story with a caption, “Proper attire.”

July 4 - Denver Jones posts a picture with LeBron at the Cavs' practice facility in Independence

Players are allowed to work out at any NBA team’s practice facility during the summer. Still, James has access to many gyms in the area that he could use besides the Cavs.

Additionally, he didn’t have to pose for a photo there that he likely knew would end up on social media.

July 4 - LeBron says we’re reading too much into everything

James, after stoking the fire on social media, tried to do some damage control by saying he always goes and works out at the Cavs' practice facility when he’s in the area.

And every summer since it was built. I live here still and train every summer. Got damn yall bored man! Go get a plate of food somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July!

— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 4, 2025

July 8 - LeBron reposts a clarification about the “Welcome Home” hat

In more cleanup social media work, James shared a video clearing up “hat gate.”

Just a brother supporting his brother…#WelcomeHome https://t.co/3zBdFJ28N8

— PR (@pr_RWTW) July 8, 2025

July 11 - Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst release a detailed report about the Lakers' summer

ESPN NBA insiders Shelburne and Windhorst released a lengthy report about what they know of the Lakers' intentions.

In that report, they shared that:

  • Doncic and not LeBron have been included in internal conversations about team building.
  • James feels that he’s not being valued by the Lakers.
  • James wasn’t given significant notice about the Doncic trade.
  • An Eastern Conference executive was convinced James wants out of Los Angeles.
  • Lakers have “already made their statement in not offering James a contract beyond this season.”

July 11 - Random Phoenix radio host says the Lakers would like to move on from James “ASAP.”

Does John Gambadoro, a sports talk show host in Phoenix, have inside information that NBA insiders aren’t sharing? Probably not. But I guess it’s worth noting that he said the Lakers want to move on from James since it made headlines.

They would like to move on from him ASAP

— John Gambadoro (@Gambo987) July 11, 2025

July 11 - Frye and Clifton share cryptic posts about the Lakers wanting to move off of James

Sam Amico aggregated an article about Gambadoro’s tweet, saying Los Angeles wanted to move on from James.

Frye, who played with James on the 2016 championship team and seemingly has a good relationship with him, then shared that article on X with an old GIF of James eating popcorn on Cleveland’s bench.

Clifton then reshared the post.

pic.twitter.com/SQzhzpYpL5

— Jared Mueller (@JaredKMueller) July 12, 2025

Does this mean anything? Who knows. What we do know is that LeBron has ways to get messages out there through his friends in the media — like Clifton and Frye — if he wanted to.

We can’t say that he is trying to get a message out there with Clifton and Frye. But then again, we can’t say that he isn’t.

July 11 - Cavs are reportedly only interested in James if he’s bought out

Ashish Mathur of Amico Hoops reported that the Cavs are only interested in James if he’s bought out of his current contract with the Lakers.

July 12 - LeBron refuses to shut down any rumors, says “I ain’t got nothing to talk about.”

James showed up to Summer League to watch Bronny James and the Lakers. He was asked by ESPN to join the broadcast, but declined. He reportedly told McMenamin, “I ain’t got nothing to talk about.”

LeBron declined to hop on the ESPN broadcast to talk about his situation with the Lakers:

“I ain’t got nothing to talk about.”

(via @ohnohedidnt24) pic.twitter.com/TeavwLMPbh

— Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) July 13, 2025

It would have been easy enough for LeBron to settle things once and for all right here. His subliminal messages have been heard. Everyone knows he isn’t entirely satisfied with the Lakers, but the overall situation hasn’t changed.

Maybe James was doing his best to avoid stepping on another rake by giving a live interview. Or, maybe he wants this drama to continue in some form. All we know is the fire hasn’t gone out yet.

July 12 - Lakers acknowledge LeBron on social media for the first time after he picked up his player option

It’s dangerous to read too much into team social media posts. They don’t make trades or have insider information.

However, the Lakers haven’t made a statement about James since he picked up his option and the first time they posted him was when he was in attendance to watch Bronny’s Summer League game on Saturday.

LeBron courtside in Vegas to watch the Summer League squad! pic.twitter.com/mfxVrCdcjA

— Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) July 13, 2025

This is all odd considering how often they typically post about James. Whether this means anything is anyone’s guess, but it’s at least worth pointing out.

July 12 - Four teams reached out about a LeBron trade, maybe the Cavs were one

McMenamin mentioned on the broadcast of the Lakers’ Summer League game that Paul told him four teams reached out about a possible trade.

Whether or not the Cavs were one of those teams is anyone’s guess. ScoopB said that the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, and the Cavs reached out to Paul about trading for James. Amico counteracted that report by saying Cleveland hasn’t reached out about James.

It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the Cavs have inquired about trading for James at this point.

July 14 - LeBron congratulates Brandon Weems on contract extension with Cavs

Cavs front office members Koby Altman, Mike Gansey, and Weems all had contract extensions announced. James took to social media to congratulate Weems on the news.

YESSIR!!! Congratulations to my brother B.Weems!! Super proud of u man https://t.co/QDD6aZgBwn

— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 14, 2025

Weems and James have a long history together. They were teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High School. Weems has worked his way up through the Cavs organization to be the assistant general manager.

Congratulating a long-time friend on a promotion is pretty innocent on the surface. However, James has yet to publicly comment on the Lakers’ sale or any of their moves.

Cleveland Cavaliers extend President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman

Cleveland Cavaliers Media Day

Altman earns another contract.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers are extending President Koby Altman through the 2029-30 NBA season. Altman has been in the team’s front office since 2017.

Cleveland Cavaliers president Koby Altman – the architect of the burgeoning title contender – has signed a contract extension through 2029-30, sources tell ESPN. Cavs' front office, including Mike Gansey and Brandon Weems, received extensions amid rise to No. 1 seed in East. pic.twitter.com/hd289tXfxs

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 14, 2025

Altman has bridged the gap from the post-LeBron Cavs to a new version of the team that has found success without The King for the first time in decades. Rebuilding from the ashes took time. But Altman found talent wherever he could — eventually forming a team that won 64 games last season.

Notable moves from Altman include drafting Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, trading for Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen, and hiring Kenny Atkinson, who is now the reigning Coach of the Year winner.

Altman has been busy this summer. He traded Isaac Okoro, who he selected fifth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, for Lonzo Ball — who could fill a much-needed role on the bench. Altman also brought Larry Nance Jr. back to Cleveland and drafted two more players in Tyrese Proctor and Saliou Niang.

Cleveland has a record of 317-312 in Altman’s tenure. There are some rocky years in between LeBron’s final season and their recent resurgence. But the Cavs have won 50+ games in two of the last three seasons and hold one of the brightest futures in basketball. They are expected to be legit contenders in the East next season. Something that hasn’t been said for a non-LBJ team since I’ve been alive.

His resume isn’t flawless. Cavs fans can point towards holes in the roster or express angst over the team’s recent failures in the postseason. But one thing’s for sure — Altman believes in the roster he built — and Dan Gilbert clearly believes in it, too.

Four teams contacted Rich Paul about LeBron James, who knows if the Cavs were one

2025 NBA Summer League - Los Angeles Lakers v New Orleans Pelicans

We know LeBron isn’t happy with the Lakers. We aren’t sure if his former team has looked into trading for him.

LeBron James opted into the last year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for this upcoming season. Whether or not he’ll play again with them is somehow yet to be determined.

The Cleveland Cavaliers could be in the mix for James’s services if he were to play elsewhere next season. He has ties with the franchise, he would make them title favorites, and it would narratively make sense from a career-arc standpoint, which is something LeBron seems to care about.

The Cavs wouldn’t be the only team interested in James if he were to be made available. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said on the broadcast of the Lakers’ Summer League game on Saturday that Rich Paul told him four teams reached out to Paul about James since he opted into his contract.

REPORT: 4 teams have contacted Rich Paul with interest in trading for LeBron, per @mcten pic.twitter.com/0KMx0bZHOs

— Lakers Daily (@LakersDailyCom) July 13, 2025

Whether or not the Cavs were one of those teams is anyone’s guess.

If you were to trust ScoopB, the teams that reached out were the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, and the Cavs.

At the same time, Sam Amico wrote that he heard that the Cavs haven’t reached out to Paul about trading for James.

If I were to speculate on this, I’d say that the Cavs have reached out. Altman is known for being active in trying to make deals, or at least finding out more information, when he can. He reportedly reached out to the Phoenix Suns about a Kevin Durant trade, even though coming up with a deal was unlikely. The front office also has an extensive history of working with Paul and James’s camp. Not picking up the phone to see what was possible would be a dereliction of duty in my opinion, even if a trade isn’t the most likely outcome here.

We’ll see how this all plays out. James hasn’t been subtle about being unhappy with his situation in Los Angeles. Whether or not this ends up with him playing for the Cavs again at some point in his career remains to be seen.

The Cavs traded player exception explained

Cleveland Cavaliers Introduce Kenny Atkinson

Photo by David Liam Kyle/NBAE via Getty Images

Koby Altman has another tool to work with.

Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman has continually shown that his greatest strength is upgrading the roster with trades. That came through again earlier this summer when the Cavs acquired Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls for Isaac Okoro.

This team needed more size on the perimeter, an additional ball handler, and someone who could win their defensive matchups. Ball should help in all of those areas. Additionally, Ball makes $1 million less this upcoming season than Okoro, which is beneficial in a salary-capped sport considering the Cavs are a second-apron team.

Teams can get a traded player exception when they move a player for someone making less money. The Cavs did that in the Ball for Okoro deal so they would have an exception that they could use.

Spotrac contributor Keith Smith believes that the Cavs would have an $11 million exception because there was an injury protection clause in Ball’s contract. This protection would’ve allowed for Ball’s outgoing salary to act as $0 for the purposes of just the trade.

Due to an injury protection clause in Lonzo Ball's contact, the Chicago Bulls had to use a portion of their TPE for Zach LaVine to acquire Isaac Okoro.

The Cleveland Cavaliers created a full TPE of $11M for Isaac Okoro on the outgoing salary side.

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) July 16, 2025

A traded player exception allows the team with that exception to take back a player making that salary or less in a deal. It cannot be combined with the salary of other players or other exceptions.

Good time for a reminder:

A Traded Player Exception (TPE) can't be combined with salary or another TPE in a trade. It has to be used by itself.

You can split up a TPE (use it to bring in multiple players), but you can't combine it with anything to bring in more salary.

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) December 18, 2023

Traded player exceptions last a year after the deal has been made. This means that a trade exception that was created from a move last trade deadline could be used now or before that one-year anniversary during this upcoming season.

The Cavs are a second-apron team, which comes with restrictions on how they could use traded-player exceptions.

Second apron teams cannot use a traded player exception that was created during the last league year. The league year begins on July 1. Any exception created before the current league year would be frozen unless that team gets out of the second apron.

The Cavs and Bulls trade was officially executed after July 1, which means it is in this league year (2025-26). As such, the Cavs are able to use it, whatever amount it is. Any exception the Cavs created before July 1 can’t be used.

The Cavs can only take back 100% of the salary that they’re sending out in a trade and they cannot send out multiple players in a deal because of the second apron. In essence, they’re restricted to only swapping out one player for one (or multiple players) that make as much or less than who they’re sending away.

A trade exception of $11 million wouldn’t change that in most circumstances since it can’t be combined with other players’ salaries. It can, however, be used in a trade where the Cavs don’t send out a player (could send draft compensation or provide salary relief instead) and receive a player back in return.

In short, the Cavs could acquire anyone in the league making $11 million or less next season with the exception as long as they didn’t send a player out in the process.

RealCavsFans (who’s a great follow for all Cavaliers stuff, but especially cap-related things) provided a quick breakdown of guys Cleveland could target with the exception.

Looking at projected tax paying teams and players that could fit within a potential $11M TPE--

DAL: Caleb Martin, OMAX, Powell
DEN: Nnaji
LAL: Kleber
MIA: Fontecchio
ORL: Goga
TOR: Agbaji
BOS: Niang ( )

Non-tax teams--
CHI: Smith
LAC: Dunn
OKC: Dieng
PHX: O'Neale
UTH: Anderson

— RealCavsFans.com (@realcavsfans) July 17, 2025

Some players on this list could really help out the Cavs.

The question would become whether bringing on a player like this would be worth the price in draft assets and in luxury tax payments. The Cavs are far into the tax. Any salary that they add to their payroll will result in a significant jump in the tax bill.

We’ll see whether the Cavs are able to use this exception to acquire more talent. At the very least, they have more options available to them now than before.

Update: This article was revised to clarify the amount of the traded player exception and how it could be used.

Tyrese Proctor scores 35 in Summer League loss

2025 NBA Summer League - Miami Heat v Cleveland Cavaliers

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Proctor’s 35 points wasn’t enough for the shorthanded Cavaliers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers showed fight in their last scheduled Summer League game, even though it wasn’t enough. They fell 94-86 to the Sacramento Kings. The loss officially eliminates the Cavs from advancing in the Summer League tournament.

You want to see flashes and glimpses of good play from your prospects in Summer League. We finally saw that in second-round pick Tyrese Proctor as he poured in 35 points on 11-24 shooting. The rookie carried the scoring load with Craig Porter Jr., Jaylon Tyson, and Sailiou Niang out of the lineup.

Proctor got more comfortable as the game progressed. Being forced to supply the offense probably helped with that. He did a good job of getting to the midrange shot, which is something that will be important for Proctor, considering he might not have the athleticism to continually get to the basket in the NBA.

Tyrese Proctor’s scoring chart from Wednesday’s game. He went 3-3 inside the arc, 4-7 from the midrange, and 4-14 from three.
via NBA.com
Proctor’s shot chart from 7/16/25

Even though Proctor took 24 shots, he still did a good job of moving the ball around to teammates who didn’t always reward him for doing so. That would get lost in just looking at the box score. Proctor ended the game with four assists, three rebounds, two steals, and two turnovers.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin continued his solid Summer League. He provided 18 points on 7-17 shooting with 12 total rebounds (10 came on the offensive end), three assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Tristan Enaruna and Norchad Omier were the only other Cavaliers to register double-digit points. Both finished with 11.

It was a grind-it-out performance for the shorthand Cavs. They were only in this game because of their ability to create and capitalize on second-chance points. They outscored Sacramento 24-10 in that category with 23 offensive rebounds. This allowed them to take 23 more shots from the field.

Winning the possession game so handily almost allowed Cleveland to overcome their lack of talent. Sacramento was the better team. There’s a reason they have been undefeated throughout the summer.

Nique Clifford led the Kings with 19 points and nine helpers. Isaac Jones provided 17 points on 8-11 shooting.

The Cavs traded player exception isn’t as good as we thought

Boston Celtics v Cleveland Cavaliers - Game Four

This, unfortunately, won’t be a useful tool in upgrading the roster.

The Cleveland Cavaliers received a traded player exception in their deal with the Chicago Bulls that swapped Isaac Okoro for Lonzo Ball. Yesterday, it was reported and written by me that the exception was for $11 million. Today, it has been clarified by Keith Smith that Cleveland has only a $1 million traded player exception.

Correction on this:

CLE has a $1M TPE for Okoro, not a $11M TPE.

The CHI side is all still valid. https://t.co/ZPNVmfbLKX

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) July 18, 2025

A traded player exception is created when a team trades a player with more salary for one with less or no salary at all. Cleveland did that when they sent out Okoro — who is set to make $11 million this upcoming season — for Lonzo Ball and his $10 million deal.

This difference would mean that the Cavs would have a traded player exception of $1 million.

The confusion came from an injured-player clause in Ball’s contract that would’ve allowed a team to trade him as if his salary were $0. This, in theory, would’ve created an $11 million trade exception. That reading of the contract was incorrect.

So, where does that leave the Cavs?

A trade exception like this allows a team to acquire someone who makes as much or less than their exception in a trade as long as they didn’t send out a player of their own. That would’ve been beneficial if you could acquire a player a team is trying to salary dump who is making $11 million or more.

Since the exception is for $1 million, the Cavs could only acquire a player making that much or less in a deal. And unfortunately for Cleveland, no players would fit into that exception as the minimum contract for a player with no years of service time for the upcoming season is $1,361,969.

In short, this is essentially worthless for the Cavs.

The CBA is confusing. Even the experts get things wrong. But at least we all learned something about traded player exceptions along the way.

Cavaliers Reacts Survey: Who has stood out the most in Summer League?

Let’s talk Cavs Summer League!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cleveland Cavaliers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The summer is flying by. The Cleveland Cavaliers are already approaching the end of their trip to Las Vegas. If you’ve been keeping up with the Summer League action, then we want to hear your thoughts!

Who has impressed you the most this summer?

The Cavs have a number of intriguing options to choose from. Nae’Qwan Tomlin was an early standout when he erupted for 30 points in his first game of the summer. He followed that performance with a 22-point outing, but has been relatively quiet since then.

Jaylon Tyson might have put himself ahead of the pack in his most recent game. Tyson put up 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a dominant showing against the Miami Heat. He was then ruled out for Wednesday’s game versus the Kings — and it’s possible Tyson has graduated from the Summer League altogether.

Tyrese Proctor hasn’t been as dynamic. But his three-point shooting has stood out. Proctor’s off-ball movement and strong mechanics give him a solid foundation to build on.

Finally, Tristan Enaruna is a wild card. He stole the show with three highlight-reel dunks in Cleveland’s win over Miami. The Cleveland State alum has surprised us with his motor and athleticism. He hasn’t been the best player on the floor, but he might be the biggest uncovered gem for the Cavs.

The Cavs currently have the third-best odds to win the NBA Finals next season, according to FanDuel. That means it will be hard for anyone competing in the Summer League to then play a significant role for a title contender next season. But these four players are the ones who have impressed us the most.

Cavs Reacts: Nae’Qwan Tomlin is turning heads in Summer League

Tomlin was voted as Cleveland’s biggest standout.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cleveland Cavaliers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Cleveland Cavaliers play their final consolation game of the summer on Saturday. With four other games under out belt — let’s reflect on how the team has performed in Vegas.

Earlier in the week, we asked Cavs fans to vote for who impressed them the most in Summer League. Nae’Qwan Tomlin ran away with the vote.

Tomlin took home roughly 2/3rds of the vote as Jaylon Tyson landed as a distant runner-up. Tyrese Proctor likely would have performed better in this poll if it was posted after his 35 point game. Ah, well.

Cleveland went just 2-2 in Vegas prior to their consolation game. The results of each game aren’t very important, though. This trip to the desert is more about player development. Tomlin was the clear winner in this regard.

Tomlin led all players in offensive rebounds and averaged close to 20 points per game during his first four games in Vegas. His on-ball creation really popped in his first two performances, where Tomlin scored a combined 52 points on insane efficiency.

The Cavs could be counting on Tomlin, Proctor and Tyson to play minutes throughout the regular season. After all, 82 games is a long time. Someone is bound to get an opportunity to step up. All three of them showed enough promise in Vegas to feel excited about that potential scenario.

Cleveland’s over/under for win total is currently set at 56.5 by FanDuel. They’ll likely need a little help from their bench to reach that mark.

Cavs attended former All-Star’s showcase workout

The Cavaliers could be eying Victor Oladipo for one of their final roster spots.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have two roster spots remaining. They can only add players on league-minimum contracts to fill those openings due to being a second-apron team. One of the players that they could target for one of those openings is former two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo.

According to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com, the Cavs were one of the teams in attendance for Oladipo’s workout. He’s attempting a comeback to the NBA after missing the last two seasons after tearing his left patellar tendon in the 2023 playoffs.

Oladipo was one of the best shooting guards in the league for a brief stretch from 2017-19. Unfortunately, not being able to stay on the court has prevented him from truly reaching his potential as a player.

Oladipo has played in less than half of his team’s games all but once since the 2017-18 season. The 42 games he appeared in with the Miami Heat in 2022-23 are the most he’s played in during that stretch.

Despite the injuries, Oladipo was a solid bench player the last time we saw him on the court with the Miami Heat in 2022-23. He averaged 10.7 points, 3.5 assists, and 3 rebounds on .397/.330/.747 shooting splits in 26.3 minutes per contest.

The Cavs likely aren’t going to get a high-impact player with one of their last roster spots considering they can only offer a minimum contract. Other players in that tier are the likes of Kevin Love, Ben Simmons, and other veterans who are far removed from their peak season.

We’ll see what direction the front office takes with filling out the final few spots. If recent seasons are any indicator, it’s likely the Cavs break training camp with 14 roster slots filled so that they could add one more player at or after the trade deadline.

Cavs drop final Summer League game 82-71 to Warriors

2025 NBA Summer League - Cleveland Cavaliers v Golden State Warriors

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Nae’Qwan Tomlin struggled to find his shot in the loss.

The Cleveland Cavaliers ended their Summer League slate with an 82-71 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Cleveland had a tough time scoring the ball. They were down by 22 in the fourth quarter, but a 14-0 run cut the deficit to six with just over four minutes to play. That was a close as the Cavs would get.

The final Summer League exhibition is a lot like the third NFL preseason game. Most of the guys who played some in the previous tune-up games aren’t participating. The only ones left by the end are the ones fighting for special teams positions and trying to make the final roster. In Summer League, the remaining players are mostly jockeying for G League spots.

In short, it’s difficult to take too much away from a game like this.

The only Cavalier who played today that we know will get some kind of NBA minutes next season is Nae’Qwan Tomlin. Tyrese Proctor, Craig Porter Jr., Jaylon Tyson, and Saliou Niang were not in uniform.

Tomlin emptied the clip, but it was far from his best showing of the summer. He couldn’t find his shot as he went 2-15 from the field through the first three quarters. Things turned around as Tomlin provided 13 fourth-quarter points to help lead the failed comeback attempt. He ended the evening with 17 points on 6-21 shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, and seven turnovers.

This was a rough showing from Tomlin, but it shouldn’t overshadow what has been a good showing in Las Vegas. The Cavs didn’t have many other on-ball threats which forced Tomlin to be the main source of offense. When his shot wasn’t falling, there wasn’t anyone else the Summer Cavs could turn to.

This isn’t a role we expect Tomlin to play in the NBA. I wouldn’t make too much out of this poor performance.

Tristan Enaruna has put himself in a decent position to earn the remaining two-way spot. He had a respectable outing as he added 13 points on 4-11 shooting with six rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Chaney Johnson led the Cavs in bench points with 12 on 6-8 shooting with four rebounds and three assists. Jaxson Robinson provided 12 points on 4-15 shooting with four rebounds.

The Warriors were led by Chris Manon’s 17 points on 4-5 shooting.

Cleveland concluded Summer League with a 2-3 record. The Cavs will next take the floor for preseason games at the beginning of October.

A versatile Cavs defender is still on the trading block

Cleveland could be moving another key defensive player

The Cleveland Cavaliers are a second-apron team and are currently staring down a $141 million tax bill according to Spotrac. That number will only grow as Cleveland will eventually fill the last two open spots on its roster.

There will be numerous cap casualties in the coming years. Presumably, a member of their core four and/or De’Andre Hunter could be moved just for luxury tax reasons.

Again, this is a reminder, the second apron limitations are pretty benign if you have a good team like the Cavs do. Aggregating contracts in trades (something they’ve done once in the last two years) and using the midlevel exception (they didn’t use this last season despite not being in the tax) aren’t prohibitive to keeping a good team together. It’s the growing tax bill that’s the issue.

One of the casualties next season could be defensive-first forward Dean Wade who will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.

Chris Fedor of cleveland.com recently reported that there is still “chatter” about moving Wade because “the current belief is Wade likely wouldn’t return” once his contract ends after this upcoming season. Fedor stated that numerous contenders have expressed interest and that the Dallas Mavericks have been “fans [of Wade’s] for a few years.”

This isn’t too surprising. There were rumors that the Cavs were looking to move Wade earlier this summer before the Isaac Okoro and Lonzo Ball trade.

Wade still remains useful for the Cavs despite his offensive limitations due to his unwillingness to take open threes. Cleveland has been considerably better with him on the court compared to when he’s off every season since 2021-22. Last season, they were 1.8 points better per 100 possessions with Wade on the floor.

Still, there are questions about how useful someone can be in the playoffs when they’re as reluctant to shoot as Wade is. He posted just a 10% offense usage last season (2nd percentile) which makes it difficult to respect him as a viable offensive threat.

Players with Wade’s defensive versatility are hard to come by, and he plays a position that the Cavs are quite thin at. There would be value in letting him play out the season with the team, not re-signing him after this upcoming season, and seeing if Nae’Qwan Tomlin can grow into his role.

We’ll see how this all plays out. I’m assuming this will be a consistent rumor until he’s traded or his contract runs out.

Wade averaged 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game last season on .413/.360/.533 shooting splits in 59 games.
