Happy Sunday morning one and all.

We are in for an interesting one this week, as the Cardinals continue to find ways to not play their starters, while the Los Angeles Rams are looking to get back into the win column after losing their hold on the top seed in the NFC.

Do we like anything for the Cardinals in this one?

The short answer… no.

The long answer, well there is a way for the Cardinals to win, but it will involve being able to run the ball consistently.

Arizona Cardinals embarrassed at home by Los Angels Rams

gettyimages-2250606861.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals tank is on.

They scored on the opening drive, then proceeded to trail by as much as 35-points in the game after leading by 7-3 with five minutes to go in the first quarter.

After that, they were able to get it tied 10-10, but then the floodgates opened and the Los Angeles Rams absolutely blew out the Cardinals 45-17.

It wasn’t even as close as the score, as the Cardinals never gave any pushback to the Rams in this one.

The defense was back to being miserable, giving up 530 total yards of offense and 45 points.

The offense was once again impotent, scoring a measly 17 points, their new average week to week.

There’s not a redeeming thing about this team, or franchise at this point and no one can deny that at this point.

Also, they didn’t even tank properly as they won’t be able to get in front of teams at this rate either.

Onto the final four games.

Arizona Cardinals open as big road underdogs ahead of matchup with Houston Texans

gettyimages-2250594123.jpg

There are few questions about the Arizona Cardinals actually winning games from here on out.

They will be underdogs in all of them, but this upcoming week is especially a problem for the Cardinals.

Their defense was as bad as expected against a great Rams offense, but their offense was not good in the game, once again only scoring 17 points.

Well, now they get the best defense in the NFL this week, as they take on the Houston Texans.

They have opened as 8.5-point underdogs according to our friends at FanDuel Sportsbook.

After what the Texans just did to the Kansas City Chiefs, in Kansas City, I have a hard time seeing the Arizona Cardinals being within nine points.

The Texans defense is the best in the NFL, and they held the Chiefs offense into three turnovers and held them well under 300 yards of total offense.

This could be a nightmare scenario for the Arizona Cardinals.

National media site is predicting at least six NFL head coaching firings

imagn-27714064.jpg

Week 14 of the 2025 NFL season is in the books. The playoff picture is getting much clearer after each weekend’s games come to their conclusion each weekend.

What is also clear is which teams are headed in the wrong direction, and have been for several years now. Will their team owners continue with their head coaches? Or will they have an announcement on Black Monday?

RELATED: CARDINALS FAN CONFIDENCE REMAINS LOW

Already, two clubs have let their head coaches go: the Tennessee Titans and the New York Football Giants. Both teams still haven’t done anything but pile up losses as the season has just four games remaining.

After this weekend’s contests, Athlon Sports came out and published an article written by Andrew Holleran stating that the head coaching firings are just getting prepped. Which other teams are on their list of potential firings?

According to Athlon, at least six. Or even seven.

NFL insider Josina Anderson has stated that there will be six more coaching vacancies once the final regular-season game is played in Week 18 on Sunday, January 4. The very next day is usually when these firings take place.

“Black Monday” is the official moniker. It was derived from an actual event.

This term originated in Dublin, Ireland, in 1209 when 500 settlers were massacred on Easter Monday and was referred to as “Black Monday.” In football, the term was first used in a 1998 New York Times article referring to an Associated Press story, “Black Monday for NFL Coaches.”

Another TNF game in the books, As of right now*, a league source says 6-7 head coaching jobs are expected to be open as behind-ths-scenes convos are already happening to reset for seasons ahead.

Here is one head coaching candidate that will be on the market this offseason.… https://t.co/F5rArsO4MW

— JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) December 5, 2025

Anderson quotes a “league source” for her information and stated several club owners are already making alternate plans.

Even though Anderson mentioned six firings, she only listed four:

Pete Carroll – Raiders

Raheem Morris – Falcons

Jonathan Gannon – Cardinals

Kevin Stefanski – Browns

For a while now, speculation has swirled around Mike McDaniel of the Miami Dolphins getting the ax, as well as the New York Jets’ Aaron Glenn.

That could mean as many as eight head coaching vacancies could be on the horizon.

In addition, rumors are now circulating that Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers may want to part ways with the franchise and take a year off before returning to the game, just like Sean Payton did. However, a source with the team stated that Tomlin would never be fired and if he left the head coaching position, it would be on his own timeline. Besides, his contract runs out this season, but the franchise has a two-year option to retain him.

From @NFLGameDay Morning: On Mike Tomlin, his future with the #Steelers and what may happen next… pic.twitter.com/jL2JGXovbA

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 7, 2025

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Steelers will never fire Tomlin, and he will decide if, and when, to step down. All of this is probably moot since the Steelers defeated division foe Baltimore Ravens 27-22 this weekend to claim first place in the AFC North Division.

Despite efforts, Arizona Cardinals make no headway in draft position

imagn-26765503.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals are either the worst team in the NFL, with some of the worst coaching, decision making and on field product.

Or, they are once again not trying to win football games, which is the only thing everyone can agree on as the goal of the NFL.

Jonathan Gannon has 15 wins in almost three full seasons. For those not familiar with math, that is an average of five wins a season, which is not ideal if you are playing 17 games a season.

For Gannon, if he has convinced the owner to retain him for another season then he has also convinced him that tanking is the way to go.

The Cardinals efforts against the Los Angeles Rams were laughable at best, and downright offensive most of the time.

Yet, with their abysmal performance they gained no ground in their quest to jump into the top five of the 2026 NFL Draft.

In fact, they remain in the same spot they came into Sunday with.

Let’s take a look at the draft order.

  1. New York Giants (2-11)
  2. Las Vegas Raiders (2-11)
  3. Tennessee Titans (2-11)
  4. Cleveland Browns (3-10)
  5. New Orleans Saints (3-10)
  6. Washington Commanders (3-10)
  7. New York Jets (3-10)
  8. Arizona Cardinals (3-10)
  9. Los Angeles Rams via Atlanta Falcons (4-9)
  10. Minnesota Vikings (4-9)

The Cardinals would need two teams in front of them to win another game, not impossible since the Saints play the Jets and the Titans still, but the Cardinals cannot win their game against the Falcons.

Eventually, even if you are actively trying to lose, you have to win games for anyone to be convinced to play for you.

Yesterday’s loss basically looked like the Cardinals quit on Gannon, so will that change things over the final four weeks?

The story of how the Bidwill family became owners of the Cardinals – Part 1

gettyimages-515302252.jpg

The owner of the Arizona Cardinals is Michael J. Bidwill. He is a wealthy man. The Bidwill family overall is rich, rich.

imagn-27730439.jpg

The Bidwill’s have owned the Cardinals franchise since 1932, but the sale wasn’t announced until 1933. A member of the Bidwell family has owned the franchise ever since.

How did this family become so wealthy? The facts are, when Charles Bidwell purchased the Chicago Cardinals in 1932, he was already rich.

The Cardinals have won two NFL championships, with one being under the Bidwills’ ownership in 1947. The other was the 1925 title that remained under controversy for decades. That is another story. There are numerous teams in the league that have long-time family ties, and the Cardinals are one of them.

How did the Bidwill family end up with the Cardinals? The yarn involves a man who loved the Chicago Bears.

Here’s the entire story.

The year was 1929

In 1929, the NFL consisted of 12 clubs. Most were teams with rosters comprised of local athletes and members of athletic clubs or gyms with former college players sprinkled in. Of the dozen squads, only seven called a large city their home: New York Giants, Frankfurt (Philadelphia) Yellow Jackets, Chicago Bears and Chicago Cardinals, Staten Island (New York City) Stapletons, Minneapolis Red Jackets, and Boston Bulldogs.1

Chris-OBrien-chicago-cardinals.jpg

The founder of the Cardinals was Chris O’Brien, who began the team in 1898. O’Brien was a painting contractor. He has since been called the “Father of Professional Football in Chicago” and is a founding member of the “National Football League” (NFL), which began as the “American Professional Football Association” in 1920.

Another charter member team, the Decatur Staleys, relocated to Chicago in 1921 and were renamed the Chicago Staleys, then the Chicago Bears in 1922. They played their home games at Cubs Park, home of the Chicago Cubs professional baseball team. Meanwhile, the Cardinals played on a field at Normal Park, which was a city block field located on the corner of Racine Street and West 61st Street.2 The park was large enough for a baseball diamond with a football field overlay in the fall, with seating of just over 3,000.

With the association of the Cubs, the Bears had a large following in the city as the sport of American Football began to take hold, and rabid college football fans embraced the professional variety.

With two pro football teams in the same city, the Cardinals usually were the odd man out because the Bears were extremely successful in the NFL. Since its inception, the Bears had won one NFL championship and orchestrated eight consecutive winning seasons from 1921 to 1928. However, the Cardinals were also successful on the field but not at the gate. They had a difficult time getting citywide support.

gettyimages-52132225.jpg

In 1922, the Cardinals moved to play their home games in Comiskey Park, built in 1910 as the home of the Chicago White Sox professional baseball club. This stadium seated 28,000. The annual game between the two teams was normally the Cardinals’ only huge payday, whether it was a home or away game.

By the 1925 season, O’Brien began selling his best players to keep the franchise afloat. Over the next three years, the team’s collective record was 9-18-2 and O’Brien was financially broke. To make matters worse, his Cardinals lost the lease at Comiskey Park because the Chicago Bulls of the newly started American Football League had obtained the lease instead. The team was forced back to Normal Park.

In the middle of the 1928 season, the Cardinals had a six-week lull from October 14 to November 24 to regroup 3 and keep the team operational instead of folding. That 1928 team won just one game and scored only seven points all season.

Which all circles back to 1929.

Chicago Cardinals

The Cardinals had played only six games in 1928, going 1-5-0, and their finances were exhausted. O’Brien basically did nothing after the season, and the franchise was in limbo. He didn’t know if there would be another season or just simply close the doors and fold.

George Halas was the Bears’ owner, along with minority owner Edward “Dutch” Sternaman, and had a healthy relationship with the Cubs. Dr. David Jones was a major stockholder in the Cubs and owned more stock than anybody except Philip K. Wrigley.4 Halas and O’Brien were friendly even though they competed for the same fans and advertising revenue. Halas got wind of O’Brien’s financial predicament. The last thing the league needed was for its member teams to close down.

Halas introduced Dr. Jones to O’Brien. The result was that Dr. Jones purchased the Cardinals for $12,500 5 on July 27. O’Brien used some of the funds to pay the players what he had owed them for the 1928 season. There are some sources that state that Dr. Jones paid $25,000, which is incorrect.

Even though Dr. Jones was a well-known sportsman, he spent his time with the Cubs and not the Cardinals. During his ownership, the team finished with two fourth-place finishes and came in seventh-place twice, including going 2-6-2 in 1932.

imagn-3663363.jpg

Enter Charles Bidwill.

Bidwill was a very intelligent man who was a Chicago-area lawyer. He liked to dabble. He gained significant wealth through his law practice, which enabled him to have the capital needed to play with.

He owned a printing company that provided racetrack programs and betting tickets at the Hawthorne Race Course. He became the owner of a racing stable. Later, he was the operational chief at Chicago Stadium, home of the hockey Chicago Blackhawks and “National Girls Baseball League” team the Chicago Bluebirds. There, Bidwill organized prize boxing matches and six-day bicycle races.

His involvement with the horse racing track resulted in trouble with a U.S. Senate investigation, which involved gangster Al Capone, who was seen there often accompanied by bodyguards.6

Through his law practice, Bidwill also served as assistant prosecutor for the City of Chicago.

Bidwill’s nickname was “Blue Shirt Charley” because he often wore blue shirts and boots versus the traditional white shirts and customary brown or black leather shoes.

Bidwill was also a season ticket holder of the Chicago Bears.

The 1930 Bears went 9-4-1, including five consecutive wins to close out the year, and yet lost just over $10,000 for the season. In the end, Halas had no choice but to reach out to family members, banks, and friends for loans in order to keep going until the next season’s gate receipts and program sales could finally place Chicago back in the black.

Being a season ticket holder who always paid in full with cash, Halas knew of Bidwill.

In the early 1930s, Bears half-owner Sternaman decided to sell his 50% portion of the club. He had invested in an apartment building and a gas station, but was facing steep mortgage payments. Sternaman offered his shares to Halas for $38,000, which Halas accepted on the spot.7 The only problem was that Halas did not have $38,000. An arrangement was made for Halas to make three installments over three years.

One of Halas’ first calls was to his mother, who bought $5,000 in stock. Next up, he asked Bidwill for a loan. Bidwill didn’t hesitate and then wrote a $5,000 check, but instead of a repayment plan, he opted for stock in the team. $5,000 in 1932 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $118,239.42 today.

Bidwill then arranged a bank loan for Halas for another $5,000. This paid off the first installment to Sternaman. Shortly thereafter, Bidwill was installed as the Bears’ vice president.

Charles Bidwill, Chicago Bears Vice President.

Next up: How the Bidwill’s purchased the Cardinals, and a championship season

PFF unfolds nightmare 2026 NFL Draft scenario for Arizona Cardinals

imagn-27776892.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals are fighting to keep some sort of respect for them in the 2025 season and moving forward.

It seems to be harder to do week-to-week.

That is what happens when the last three games against your division rivals are a combined 130-61. That is three games where the average score is 43.3 to 20.3.

Yet, they didn’t gain any ground in the 2026 NFL Draft spots yet either, which is not ideal when you are 23 points worse than everyone in your division.

So, things couldn’t get worse, right?

As my good friend Blake Murphy says, it can always get worse.

Now, this is not to say that this will happen, this is a very, very early 2026 NFL Mock Draft scenario from a buddy of mine Trevor Sikkema from PFF, but it also seems like as good as this is for the Arizona Cardinals on their end, it would be less than ideal from a gaining ground in the division.

From PFF:

  1. Los Angeles Rams via trade with New York Giants -Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana
  2. Las Vegas Raiders – Dante Moore, QB, Oregon
  3. Tennessee Titans – Arvell Reese, Edge, Ohio State
  4. Cleveland Browns – Jordan Tyson, WR, Arizona State
  5. New Orleans Saints – Rueben Bain Jr., Edge, Miami
  6. Washington Commanders – Cashius Howell, Edge, Texas A&M
  7. New York Jets – Makai Lemon, WR, USC
  8. Arizona Cardinals – Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami

I love Mauigoa, he is a mauler, but shows a lot in pass pro already, so that makes him an ideal fit with the Arizona Cardinals and gives them potential bookends for the next 6-8 years.

So, why is this a nightmare scenario? Well, the Rams are able to parlay their trade with the Falcons into the heir apparent from Matthew Stafford.

My take on this class of quarterbacks is not important. What I do know is that any quarterback going into McVay’s system is going to be a problem. Now they get to learn from Stafford, while getting coached by McVay, and growing in a system that already has maybe the best offense in the NFL.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are trying to just find guys that can help them not be 23 points worse than all teams in their own division.

Mauigoa would be an amazing pick. How much closer would his addition get this team to competing though?

Trey Benson’s 2025 comes to a quiet end as practice window expires

imagn-27170692.jpg

The hits keep on coming.

Whether you think the Arizona Cardinals are doing it on purpose to potentially gain a better draft pick, or just think they are the unluckiest team in the league, the sheer amount of injuries to key players has been staggering.

Now, add to that list Trey Benson, who has missed most of the season anyways with a knee issue, but now he will be done for the year with no chances to come back, as his 21-day practice window closed today.

Trey Benson will NOT be activated the rest of the season @PHNX_Cardinals pic.twitter.com/3iikuh7MWQ

— Bo Brack (@BoBrack) December 10, 2025

Benson only played in four games, had 29 carries for 160 yards and 13 receptions for 64 yards, but in his career he has played in 17 games.

That’s right, a running back in his second year has played in 17 games and his career numbers are: 92 carries for 451 yards, one touchdown, 19 receptions for 123 yards.

That is 111 touches for 574 yards and one touchdown in two years, equaling one season of football.

Now, he has never been the feature back, as the one time he was supposed to be he was injured and never heard from again this season, but the fact he has so few touches and has missed 17 possible games out of 34, is a concern on whether he can be the guy for the job as a true workhorse running back.

Either way, the Cardinals will need him in his third season, and let’s hope for a speedy and healthy recovery this offseason.

Elevator pitch

Arguably the top offensive tackle in this year’s class, Fano is a well-rounded player who possesses great movement skills, overall technique and reactive athleticism to be a very reliable blocker at the next level, but he would benefit from adding more mass in his lower body to be able to sustain against power rushers.

Strengths

Superb athlete…Gets into his sets fluidly and loosely…Quick feet to get to his spots with urgency…Shows great body control and footwork to keep a consistently square base…Shows great, savvy hand techniques to win early…Possesses strong grip strength…Has a high IQ and picks up on stunts and blitzes very well…Seals off defenders to open run lanes…Shows good range on pulls and is very good at the second level…Starts at both tackle spots.

Weaknesses

Flexibility supplements his anchor, but he can be knocked off balance due to only sufficient lower body strength…Has a good set of tools with his upper body, but hand placement can be inconsistent.

Does anyone still care about the Arizona Cardinals 2025 season?

imagn-27769788.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

How does 130-61 sit with you as an Arizona Cardinals fan? That is the last three division games for the Arizona Cardinals under Jonathan Gannon.

That is a 43-20 average in those games, and the Cardinals going into the fourth quarter of each game have been down the following:

@ Seahawks – 38-15
v Niners – 35-10
v Rams – 38-10

They’re not even competitive, the only reason the Seahawks game was even 15 points was because the Seahawks had already called off the dogs defensively, since they scored two defensive touchdowns in the games first 16 minutes of play.

The Cardinals offensive ineptitude is only matched by their defensive shortcomings.

In the end, the Cardinals are one of the worst teams in the NFL, and more than that, they are not even competitive in their own division.

So, are you confident in the direction of the franchise under the leadership of Monti Ossenfort and Jonathan Gannon?

Marvin Harrison Jr., Paris Johnson Jr. will not play against Houston Texans

imagn-27517520.jpg

Happy Friday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals play a nearly impossible game on Sunday, against the best defense in the NFL, with an offense that doesn’t score very much, and can’t win games.

And now they are doing so without two of their best players in Marvin Harrison Jr. and Paris Johnson Jr. who both will be out in this one.

On top of that, they are missing three pieces in their secondary on a defense that looked miserable against the Los Angeles Rams last week, as Jalen Thompson, Max Melton and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson will all be out as well.

— PHNX Cardinals (@PHNX_Cardinals) December 12, 2025

This week is going to be something to watch… but because it seems like it will be more like a trainwreck than a football game between two NFL teams.

The question becomes can the Cardinals really compete in this game and how long will they keep it competitive?

This will tell us a lot about the Cardinals under Jonathan Gannon and if they are still going the right way or if it may be time to move along.

Elevator pitch

A defensive coordinator’s dream, Downs has the instincts, coverage versatility, physicality and communication skills to be a high-end starter with All-Pro upside at the next level, though he’ll need to limit the overaggression when in pursuit at times.

Strengths

Good eyes and trusts his keys when reading the quarterback and watching route concepts play out in front of him…Processes well and can transition quickly to find and make a play on the football at the catch point…Displays good foot quickness and athleticism to carry receivers and tight ends to all areas of the field…Constantly visibly communicating with his teammates…Shows a lot of aggression and physicality when coming downhill…Good wrap-up tackler in open space…Versatile to play the deep parts of the field, in the slot, or in the box, and looks comfortable in each role…Allowed zero touchdowns on 336 coverage snaps in 2025…Special teams upside as a punt returner.

Weaknesses

Aggressive in support, as he puts his foot in the ground and explodes downhill, which leaves him prone to overpursuit at times…Okay take-on skills, but plenty of room for improvement in this area…Limited experience as a true single-high deep safety.

Ohio State’s Caleb Downs is one of my favorite college football players in a really, really long time.

Gonna be a phenomenal pro in large part due to his sensational football instincts. Case in point: 👇pic.twitter.com/CGrrSDCw1E https://t.co/ScvGT1qbM7

Arizona Cardinals once again get dominated in loss to Houston Texans

imagn-27815856.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals have Trey McBride.

Everyone else doesn’t seem to be playing at that level, although you can show some excitement about Walter Nolen, it would just be nice to see him healthy week in and week out.

However, the Arizona Cardinals are just a bad football team with one elite player in McBride and a lot of questions.

We cannot question the effort and joy that McBride plays with, and he’s turned into a reason to put up with this product every week.

Outside of that, there’s really not much to like about this team right now.

Is it that they’ve taken on the stoic, emotionless personality of their head coach and quarterback?

It just seems like they lack joy when they’re on the field at this point.

Almost like, we are getting paid to be out here, but this is our job and we are going to act like it.

I really don’t know how else to put it.

This team doesn’t bring us any joy in watching them, and then they don’t even make games competitive.

That is not a great combination.

NFC playoffs dominated by NFC West Division clubs

gettyimages-2250602799.jpg

Here it is at the tail end of the 2025 NFL season, and the postseason tournament is shaping up. Teams are still in the hunt, but others fell out of contention this past weekend, such as the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys. Difficult to remember the last time the Chiefs were eliminated with three games remaining on the schedule.

RELATED: CARDINALS FANS ARE OUT ON THE TEAM

Several teams still have plenty to play for, such as the #1 seed, and a division crown. Such is the case in the NFC West Division. The Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks sit on top of this division, arguably the toughest in the league, with identical 11-3-0 records. The Rams hold the edge currently because they defeated the Seahawks 21-19 in Week 11 at home. The two clubs will commence their rebound game this upcoming weekend, on Thursday Night Football broadcast on Prime Video.

Seven teams from the NFC make the playoffs. The Rams currently have the #1 seed followed by the surprising Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Then, beginning with the Wild Card seeds, Seattle is ranked #5 followed by the San Francisco 49ers at #6, and the Green Bay Packers round out the seedings coming in at #7.

That makes three NFC West Division clubs situated into the postseason. The Seahawks are a very good team and will take all of their focus on defeating the Rams this weekend. If they do, they will take over the #1 seed in the NFC plus have the inside track on winning the division.

gettyimages-2247042442.jpg

The Niners (10-4-0) have been a roller coaster so far this season. They have beaten both the Rams 26-23 and Seahawks 17-13 early on the schedule, but were pummeled by Los Angeles in the rubber game 42-26. All four of their losses have been to very good ballclubs.

Any of these three clubs could win the division, and capture the division crown.

This weekend’s games proved that this division is on fire as three of four teams won their games:

Rams 41, Detroit Lions 34

Seahawks 18, Indianapolis Colts 16

49ers 37, Tennessee Titans 24

Houston Texans 40, Cardinals 20

But so far, it appears that the trio of the Rams, Seahawks, and Niners will all make the playoffs. What other division in the NFL can boast that? Anyone?

The Arizona Cardinals are the only odd man out with a 3-11-0 record.

Speaking of the 49ers, they have the best division record, sitting at 4-1-0 compared to the Rams (3-1-0) and Seahawks (2-2-0). In the NFL tiebreaker system within the division to determine who will wear the crown, the first determinant is head-to-head. Since teams play each other twice, these contests are important. The second tiebreaker is best divisional record, followed by best record in common games.

So, the “best divisional record” can make or break a season. One club can defeat another divisional foe in both games, then lose the division title just by not winning more games against the other teams.

As far as team stats, here is where all four NFC West Division teams currently sit in the league:

OFFENSE

Passing

  • #2 Rams
  • #4 Cardinals
  • #6 49ers
  • #8 Seahawks

Rushing

  • #8 Rams
  • #22 Seahawks
  • #25 49ers
  • #26 Cardinals

DEFENSE

Passing

  • #12 Seahawks
  • #19 49ers
  • #21 Rams
  • #22 Cardinals

Rushing

  • #3 Seahawks
  • #9 Rams
  • #12 49ers
  • #22 Cardinals

It is quite possible that with the current seeding in the NFC, the NFC Championship Game could be comprised of both NFC West opponents, especially if either the Rams or Seahawks were to cement the #1 seed.

Since the NFL went to divisions with four teams contained within each division, home many times has all four teams made the playoffs? Zero.

Okay, so how about three teams making the postseason in the same year? Nine. The Cardinals were involved in the last time that occurred back in 2021.

  • 2006 NFC East: Eagles (10–6), Cowboys (9–7), Giants (8–8)
  • 2007 NFC East: Cowboys (13–3), Giants (10–6), Washington (9–7)
  • 2007 AFC South: Colts (13–3), Jaguars (11–5), Titans (10–6)
  • 2011 AFC North: Ravens (12–4), Steelers (12–4), Bengals (9–7)
  • 2013 AFC West: Broncos (13–3), Chiefs (11–5), Chargers (9–7)
  • 2014 AFC North: Steelers (11–5), Bengals (10-5-1), Ravens (10–6)
  • 2017 NFC South: Saints (11–5), Panthers (11–5), Falcons (10–6)

Arizona Cardinals defensive line coach heading back to college football after season

imagn-27786080.jpg

The movement on the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff has begun, and it starts with one of their new hires, as Winston DeLattiboudere has decided to go back to the collegiate ranks as he will go be a defensive line coach with the Michigan State Spartans.

NEWS: #MichiganState is set to hire Arizona Cardinals DL coach Winston DeLattiboudere, sources tell us & @mzenitz.

The 27-year-old rising star had other P4 schools vying to poach him from the NFL but chose Joe Rossi – who he’s played & coached for.

— Justin Thind (@JustinThind) December 15, 2025

The Arizona Cardinals defensive line has been underwhelming this year, but is that on DeLattiboudere?

They replaced Derrick LeBlanc after his two years of underwhelming play from the defensive line, but they were undermanned in his time as the defensive line coach.

They spent a ton of money on the defensive front this offseason, as well as their second first round draft pick, to have one of the worst producing defensive fronts in the NFL.

Again, that begs the question if that is on the coach or the scheme or the execution from the players.

The fact that DeLattiboudere is still so highly thought of and had so many potential suitors does seem like it’s not something that people are putting on him.

Good luck to Coach DeLattiboudere.

Cardinals make bold move, select franchise quarterback in latest mock draft

USATSI_27760792.jpg

There will be several key storylines surrounding the Cardinals this offseason, with one being the quarterback position and how they approach it. There is widespread speculation that Arizona may move on from Kyler Murray, potentially leaving a void to fill.

Currently with the No. 6 overall pick after their loss to the Texans, the Cardinals are in a position to take one, but they might have to move up for it to be a sure thing. That’s what Bucs Wire’s Andrew Harbaugh sees Arizona doing, trading up to the No. 1 spot with the Giants and selecting Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza.

The New York Giants will not be needing a quarterback, though they might down the road if they keep having Jaxson Dart play like a fullback. So that means that they are trading this pick to the Arizona Cardinals as they remain in quarterback purgatory with Kyler Murray’s massive contract and a willingness to move on from him. They will need someone on the cheap end of things, and you could do worse in the Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza.

In this scenario, Arizona gives up the 6th and 38th overall picks in the 2026 NFL draft, as well as a second and fourth round pick in the 2027 NFL draft, for the 1st overall selection.

Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, would bring a lot of intrigue. He is a strong-armed signal-caller, capable of making all NFL throws with excellent accuracy. Additionally, Mendoza possesses great poise, decision-making, and the ability to navigate the pocket. He led Indiana to a perfect record and a Big Ten championship in his first season there after transferring from California.

In the 2025 season, Mendoza finished with a 71.5 completion percentage with 2,980 yards and 33 touchdown passes, which ranked first in the nation.

While he has all the tools to start from Day 1, Mendoza would be able to sit behind veteran Jacoby Brissett, who is currently under contract for 2026. Brissett could serve as a valuable bridge quarterback, allowing Mendoza to transition to the NFL at an appropriate pace.

As for Murray, the best scenario for the Cardinals would be to trade him before June 1. Arizona’s dead cap hit would be $17.9 million with a cap savings of $35.3 million.

Arizona Cardinals place Bam Knight, Andre Baccellia on injured reserve

imagn-27815356.jpg

The hits keep on coming for the Arizona Cardinals as they have placed two more players on injured reserve.

Today, the team announced wide receiver Andre Baccellia, who took a scary hit in the game against the Houston Texans and had to be carted off, as well as running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight are going on injured reserve.

From the team:

Signed wide receiver Jalen Brooks to the active roster from the practice squad

– Placed wide receiver Andre Baccellia and running back Zonovan Knight on injured reserve

– Signed offensive lineman Marques Cox to the practice squad

– Re-signed safety Patrick McMorris to the practice squad

– Released offensive lineman Trey Wedig from the practice squad

The signings took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Cox (6-5, 305) is a rookie who entered the league with Denver as an undrafted free agent from Kentucky and spent time this season on the Broncos practice squad. He played 61 games (59 starts) in his collegiate career, including starting all 12 games in 2024 with the Wildcats. Cox began his college career at Northern Illinois (2018-22) before playing his final two seasons (2023-24) at Kentucky.

Cox will wear jersey #61 and McMorris will wear #35.

They also made a number of moves on their practice squad, but the two big moves were placing two more players on the IR for the season.

Let’s hope Baccellia is going to be fine, and wishing a quick recovery to Knight.

Should the Arizona Cardinals fire Jonathan Gannon after the season?

imagn-27819331.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Arizona Cardinals are now sitting at 3-11, with three games remaining, and are a staggering 15-33 in the Jonathan Gannon era, and his win percentage with any quarterback not named Kyler Murray is 0.1176, which is insane. 2-15 with non-Kyler quarterbacks.

So, that begs the question with the team staring down the barrel of the worst season in modern NFL history for the franchise, can you retain Jonathan Gannon for 2026?

The reality is, will Michael Bidwill pay three coaches?

The defense being bad, coaches allegedly getting ready to jump ship already, and the fact that they can’t even compete against their own division are just some of the reasons it seems like it may be time to move on, but what do you think?

The story of how the Bidwill family became owners of the Cardinals – Part 2

1947-Chicago-Cardinals-NFL-champs.webp

1947 NFL Champions Chicago Cardinals: after the game

The Arizona Cardinals are a member club in the National Football League (NFL). They are actually a charter member from the league’s inception of 1920, and only one of two that still exist today. The other is the Chicago Bears, who in 1920 were originally called the “Decatur Staleys.” The Cardinals franchise back then was named the “Chicago Cardinals.”

That maiden season, the NFL had a different moniker. It was called the “American Professional Football Association,” and two years later, it was renamed the NFL.

RELATED: HOW THE BIDWILLS BECAME OWNERS PART 1

The Cardinals have been owned by the Bidwill’s since 1932. However, in the first segment, they had not yet owned the franchise. Here is the second portion of the story of how this family received ownership of the team.

PART 2

“Blue Shirt Charley” and the Cardinals

In the summer of 1932, Charles “Blue Shirt Charley” Bidwill and his wife, Violet, hosted an informal dinner party aboard their luxurious yacht “The Ren-Mar” and cruised along Lake Michigan. In attendance was Arch Ward, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, with his wife Helen, plus Dr. David Jones and his wife Elsa.

The Bidwills were a wealthy family in the Chicagoland area, as Charles had built up a successful law practice.

Dr. Jones owned a lot of stock in the Chicago Cubs pro baseball club and solely owned the Chicago Cardinals NFL club. But for now, it was just a casual evening on a luxury yacht, eating, drinking, and cruising the lake.

Bears-vs.-Cardinals.jpg

The topic eventually got around to pro football, of which Jones was the full owner of the Cardinals, and Bidwill was a minority owner and VP of the crosstown Bears. Ward covered both clubs in the newspaper.

As drinks were flowing throughout the Ren-Mar, Jones began to complain about the unfortunate state of the game in terms of annual financial losses and how much money he was losing. He also mentioned a disdain for having to compete with the Bears, which drew well at the gate, plus annually signed some of the best college talent, and usually had winning teams.

At the time, the NFL college draft was a few years away from coming into existence,8 so blue-chip college players signed with whichever NFL team was offering the most. The better teams always had the best attendance and thus could afford to pay young talent, whereas the bad to mediocre clubs didn’t have the luxury of good gates, and subsequently signed the lower levels of talent.

Like the Cardinals.

Violet Bidwill had seen that although her husband had been involved in so many sporting venues and activities over the decades, but since joining the Bears, he had found a new love in being part of an actual team with day-to-day operations.

At that point aboard the Ren-Mar, Violet Bidwill jokingly asked Jones, “Why don’t you sell the team to Charley?” Jones’ answer was that he would sell anything he owned if the price was right. Bidwill then asked what that price was, to which Jones replied, “$50,000.” 9

Bidwill brought out $2,000 in cash right there on the yacht. There was debt on the Cardinals’ books for $45,000, and another payment of $3,000 was agreed upon to meet the grand total of $50,000.10

And suddenly, Blue Shirt Charley owned his own NFL team – the Chicago Cardinals. This was a way to keep his lifelong love of sports alive. How much cold, hard cash did it actually cost the Bidwells? $5,000.

The transaction wouldn’t be announced until the following year, allowing the businessman to get rid of his Bears stock since the NFL had restrictions on persons being invested in multiple clubs.

Doug-Russell.jpg

Essentially, Bidwill had saved both Chicago franchises from going extinct.

During the following season, Bidwill sold his shares in the Bears but remained their Vice President and even had season tickets, which was a blatant conflict of interest that in those days but few cared.

Despite owning the Cardinals fully without any minority owners, Bidwill made it known he remained a Bears fan. He was even seen at a Bears home game while his Cardinals were playing an away game.

Bidwill was an intelligent man who knew how to make a winner in everything he was involved with. His checkbook was free-wheeling. As far as the NFL, Halas and the other owners were happy that Bidwill was now in the stable of NFL owners, which brought financial stability into the ranks, and the league no longer had to worry about the Cardinals folding.

Through the years

During this time, Bidwill purchased four Florida dog tracks and two Chicago horse racing tracks.

Eventually, as Bidwill became more involved in the management of the Cardinals, the draft came along and provided the weaker teams with some of the best college talent, and the City of Chicago began to catch on and provide better gates, as the Cardinals would replace the Bears in Bidwill’s heart.

He owned the team for 14 seasons. Bidwill had gotten through the lean years of World War II, when a large majority of all rosters were decimated by men joining the war effort. In 1944, neither the Cardinals nor the Pittsburgh Steelers had enough players, so they combined rosters and called themselves “Card-Pitt.”

Jimmy-Conzelman-drawing.jpg

In 1946, Bidwill hired Jimmy Conzelman as the new head coach, and the franchise went from 1-9-0 to 6-5-0. Conzelman had been a college star halfback for the University of Washington.

In April of 1947, Bidwill caught pneumonia during the week, was admitted to the hospital, and died four days later.11 He was 51 years old. His wealth was estimated to be between $6 million and $10 million.

His death came just days after he had outbid the New York Yankees for University of Georgia halfback Charley Trippi, whom the Cardinals had drafted with the first overall pick. The Yankees were a new team in the upstart “All America Football Conference,” which was an NFL-rival league with eight clubs. Trippi was signed to an unheard sum of $100,000 on a four-year deal.12

Back then, the NFL was divided into two divisions. The winners of each division would play in the NFL Championship Game. With that 1947 season, the Cardinals won the Western Division by one game after they defeated the Bears in the final game 30-21 in front of 48,632 fans at Wrigley Field.

1947-Chicago-Cardinals.webp

Next up, the Cardinals (9-3-0) had the title game at Comiskey Park. The turf was like a skating rink when they met the Eastern champs, Philadelphia Eagles (8-4-0). 30,759 patrons braved the elements to see if the City of Chicago could capture yet another World title. The contest was televised on ABC television. The Cardinals had won the regular-season meeting in Philadelphia three weeks earlier by 24 points.

1947-NFL-champs-ring.jpg

The Cardinals’ players eventually wore basketball sneakers and finally got some traction as they built a 14-0 lead. The Eagles then switched from cleats to sneakers and were able to get footing. In the end, Chicago defeated Philadelphia 28-21 for the franchise’s second title.13

As much time, money, and effort that “Blue shirt Charley” put into the Cardinals, he never witnessed an NFL title for his hobby.

Before the 1947 NFL Championship season, Bidwell’s widow, Violet, now owned the Cardinals. She became the very first female owner of a professional football team.

Next up: Violet Bidwill runs the Cardinals, remarries, and the Bidwill family ownership continues strong when Stormy and Bill’s takeover begins
