Will Bucs QB Baker Mayfield play against the Cardinals on Sunday?

gettyimages-2247612563.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals face one of the NFC’s best teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Well, they began this season as one of the best and have since lost four out of their last five games, including three in a row.

RELATED: MICHAEL WILSON THRIVES

To make things worse, their starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield, injured his left shoulder in the team’s disconcerting loss to the Rams last Sunday night. The first half was winding down as Mayfield dropped back to pass and heaved a Hail Mary that fell harmlessly to the turf as time expired. Both benches began the trek to the locker room, except for Mayfield, who was lying face down on the field.

imagn-27667761.jpg

He had help from the trainers to get him into the locker room and did not return in the second half. He had an MRI on Monday, which displayed that he suffered a sprained AC joint with no structural damage. The Bucs breathed a sigh of relief that the injury wasn’t as bad as it first appeared.

The big question then was, when would he return to the field? Would he suit up for the Cardinals contest?

This type of injury for Mayfield has occurred before. In 2021, while with the Cleveland Browns, he injured his non-throwing shoulder and then continued to play the remainder of the season until he was forced to step aside in the final game. The thought process then became, the Browns should have sat him, required a surgical procedure, then brought him back the following season.

Instead, Mayfield had a horrible year and found himself traded to the Carolina Panthers for a bag of footballs.

On Wednesday, Mayfield met with the media to discuss his injury and status.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Q: How’s the pain level?

Mayfield:
It’s there.

Q: Increasing? Decreasing?

Mayfield:
Decreasing for sure. It’s pain tolerance and management at that point. See how it goes through the week, and see where it goes from there. Understanding that we have Teddy (Bridgewater) and I have been in this spot before, hurting the non-throwing shoulder. If it’s going to hinder how I play, then I probably won’t go. But, won’t know that until later in the week, getting practice reps and seeing how that goes.

Q: We saw you grab it after the touchdown pass. Clearly, it happened before that. When did it happen? How did it happen?

Mayfield:
It came on one of the scramble runs up the middle. Kind of got hit on the right side. Exposed the left shoulder and got hit a little late. Just one of those getting hit at the right angle.

Q: How much can you lean on what happened in Cleveland in terms of how to manage this, because it’s a similar injury?

Mayfield:
It’s very different. I had dislocated my shoulder completely and had a torn labrum, partial rotator cuff, and cracked the bone in the socket. So, it’s very different. Truly, it’s about pain tolerance management and being able to move around.

Q: Is that injury going to have any factor in how you proceed?

Mayfield:
A little bit just from the physical aspect of it. I don’t want to hold this team back.

Q: You are in decent shape with a lot of football left. It’s not a playoff game. How much will that factor into your decision to start against Arizona?

Mayfield:
Where we’re at right now, we’re viewing the rest of these game “must-win” situations. That’s how we are approaching it. If I am physically able to go, then I’ll do it. But I won’t know that until later on in the week. The mental side I will be alright.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles then took the podium to field questions about Mayfield.

Q: We saw Mayfield out there today on the walk-through. Is there any potential for him to play on Sunday?

Bowles:
We’ll see tomorrow. He has to do more tomorrow and get a good look at him full speed. But he’s feeling better.

Q: From an injury standpoint, do you feel good about the progress?

Bowles:
It was good to see him compete in the walk-through. Hopefully, he is trending forward, and we can get a better gauge of that.

Q: Are you getting Teddy (Bridgewater) ready to play with a game plan and then see if Baker can go?

Bowles:
Yeah, you got to get Teddy ready to play. Obviously Baker’s sore and see how he feels at the end of the week.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Will Mayfield play against the Cardinals this week? The answer to that is that nobody knows at this juncture. But it appears that Mayfield is at a point in his career where he has learned from past experiences that an athlete cannot just press on and continue to play if he remains injured. It doesn’t help anyone.

So, his comments sort of lean towards the fact that Mayfield is willing to do what is best for the Buccaneers. Even if that means he will be holding the clipboard on the sidelines against Arizona.

imagn-27605997.jpg

Tampa Bay began the season 3-0-0 and 5-1-0 and now sits at 6-5-0. They have beaten some really good teams in Seattle and San Francisco, but have lost to some really good teams as well: Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills.

Good teams are able to stay in the game with really good teams, but the Bucs just aren’t doing this.

Mayfield is having a good season and has been mentioned in the MVP category. Bridgewater has only thrown eight passes this year in four games. In his 11 years, he has only played four complete seasons, and after his major injury in 2016, in which he tore his ACL and suffered other structural damage, including a dislocation of the knee joint, he has primarily been a backup in the league.

Playing the 3-8-0 Cardinals on the road won’t be as easy as it would appear on paper.

Arizona Cardinals open practice window for Christian Jones

gettyimages-2192887652.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals may have an opportunity to evaluate a right tackle to end the season, changing up some needs if he can play.

The team announced on Wednesday they are designating Christian Jones to open up his practice window.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has designated offensive lineman Christian Jones to return from the injured reserve list.

Jones can begin practicing and the team can activate him to the 53-man roster at any time during the next 21 days or at the conclusion of the three-week period.

In addition, the team has signed running back Montrell Johnson Jr. to the practice squad. The signing took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Johnson (5-11, 212) is a rookie who entered the league with the Eagles as a free agent from Florida. He spent three seasons at Florida after beginning his collegiate career at Louisiana and total 3,089 yards and 33 touchdowns on 569 carries. Johnson also had 411 yards and two touchdowns on 61 receptions.

Johnson will wear jersey #26.

With Jonah Williams done for the season and likely his time in Arizona over, that leaves Kelvin Beachum and Josh Fryar as the right tackle options.

Well, when Jones was taken last year in the fifth round, the team seemed to have some high hopes for him. Now, can he get back and earn reps to get evaluated for next year?

Which QB should the Cardinals prepare for? Mayfield or Bridgewater?

gettyimages-2248140209.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals roll into central Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday in the 1:00 pm (Eastern) slot. Tampa is 6-5-0 and is currently on a three-game slide, but in first place in the NFC South standings. The Cards are 3-8-0 and want to gain some momentum going down the stretch to build on for next season. They sit in last place in the NFC West Division, the NFL’s most difficult division.

RELATED: WILL MAYFIELD PLAY AGAINST THE CARDINALS?

Buccaneers’ starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield, is currently injured, still nursing a left shoulder injury sustained in the 34-7 beatdown handed out by the Los Angeles Rams last weekend.

In a recent press conference, Mayfield answered questions from the media about how his non-throwing shoulder is doing and if he will play against Arizona on Sunday. The answer: will have to wait and see. That conclusion could very well be answered right before kickoff.

Mayfield’s backup is veteran journeyman Teddy Bridgewater. He was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings after a sterling career at Louisville, where he was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Year. In his final college season, he threw 31 TDs against just four interceptions.

In training camp of 2016, he suffered a non-contact injury to his left leg for which an ambulance was summoned. He was the lead story on every sports show. After an MRI, it was confirmed that he tore his ACL and suffered other structural damage, including a dislocation of the knee joint. There was talk that he would lose that leg. Everything in that knee was blown up.

The following year, he signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets. From there, he has played for eight NFL clubs as a backup. This year with the Bucs, Bridgewater has only tossed 15 passes for 62 yards.

With Mayfield being up in the air this week, who does the Arizona coaching staff work out a game plan for?

The answer: Both quarterbacks.

Usually, teams will employ their QB room with athletes that are of a similar ability and stature as their starter. Makes no sense to have a mega-runner such as Lamar Jackson, and his backup a pure pocket passer like Tom Brady. The assignments all across the offense are different. Having similar styles of quarterbacks just works out better for everyone.

imagn-27671600.jpg

Well, Tampa Bay didn’t get that memo. Mayfield and Bridgewater are not the same style of signalcaller. Not at all. Mayfield can – and will – run, but only when flushed. There aren’t any planned running plays for Mayfield. He needs a clean pocket, but can improvise if needed.

Bridgewater has lost some of his speed since college due to his injury, but he still has a tendency to take off from the pocket.

Like Mayfield, Bridgewater is a calculated, football-smart rhythm passer. He likes to dink-and-dunk and operate in the short passing game while using play-action. He is an instinctive passer with laser-beam determination. Both are extremely competitive and meticulous in preparation. However, Bridgewater has only played on 35 snaps this year.

Mayfield is having a Pro Bowl season despite losing four out of their last five games. He is throwing at a 62.7% completion average with 18 TDs to just five picks. Tampa is a very good football team.

The Buccaneers are one of six teams in the NFL who blitz at a rate of 30% or higher. Todd Bowles is not only aggressive, but also creative with how he brings pressure.

This is just one example. Shows seven at the line , Stroud motions TE to come to match numbers. Two A-gap… pic.twitter.com/JGvcCWb391

— Donnie Druin (@DonnieDruin) November 26, 2025

The Bucs are a defensive team, just like the Cardinals, with a defensive-minded head coach. They are one of six teams in the NFL that will blitz at a rate of 30% or higher.

Arizona is not sure if Mayfield or Bridgewater will start, so their game preparation has to be Plan “A” and Plan “B.”

With Mayfield under center, the Bucs are creative and rely on his ability to read the defense and exploit the safeties.

Bridgewater plays more hot and cold and will want to generate more runs in his game than Mayfield. His receivers have to know that he is likely to take off at any moment.

Tampa Bay doesn’t rely on keeping in extra blockers while on offense, with the exception of a running back doing a chip block before flaring out into the flats.

The Cardinals’ defense is currently ranked #8 against the run and #20 in pass defense. They have 22 sacks, which ranks #22, and nine interceptions, which ranks #9. The Bucs’ offensive attack versus the Arizona defense will become the storyline of the game.

If Calais Campbell and Josh Sweat can provide a good pass rush, it won’t matter who is under center for the Bucs.

9 potential first-round prospects for Cardinals fans to know in 2026 NFL Draft

USATSI_27306959.jpg

At the beginning of the season, it appeared that the Cardinals were poised to be a playoff team. Fast forward to now, Arizona sits at 3-8, and it seems all the attention has shifted to what the team will do in the upcoming offseason in hopes of a better outcome in 2026.

So, as we slowly turn the page, here are nine potential first-round prospects that could be on the Cardinals’ radar leading up to April’s draft.

OT Spencer Fano, Utah

Paris Johnson Jr. will be manning the left tackle position for the foreseeable future. But with Jonah Williams set to hit free agency, they will need to address the opposite side. Fano has been a dominant force for the Utes over the past couple of seasons and possesses the desired skill set to start in the NFL from Day 1. Arguably one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the draft class, Fano is a loose mover with the power to sustain blocks and move bodies in the run game.

OL Francis Mauigoa, Miami

Mauigoa is another player who could be in contention to start at right tackle from the jump. However, he could be seen by the coaching staff as an option to move inside to guard, a position that the Cardinals will also need to upgrade. Hulking at 6-foot-6 and 335 pounds, Mauigoa is a well-built offensive lineman with high-level athleticism, powerful hands and is strong as an ox to hold defenders at bay and create movement.

OL Olaivavega Ioane, Penn State

Tabbed as the top interior offensive lineman in this class, Ioane possesses overwhelming size and mass at 335 pounds. Despite his stature, he moves very well. He has impressive hand strength and an excellent anchor in pass protection. While he’s primarily played left guard for the Nittany Lions, Ioane has experience at all positions along the offensive line. On 285 pass-block snaps, he hasn’t allowed a single sack.

WR Carnell Tate, Ohio State

I’m a firm believer that the Cardinals need to improve the offensive line first before taking a wide receiver in Round 1. However, don’t count out the idea of them adding a player to bolster the position room and form a formidable duo with Marvin Harrison Jr., especially considering Michael Wilson and Xavier Weaver are free agents after the 2026 season. Tate, who would reunite with Harrison, is a precise route runner with excellent hands and body control for high-pointing the ball, along with a willingness to be a physical blocker. In eight games, he has 39 catches for 711 yards and seven touchdowns with 18.2 yards per reception.

WR Jordyn Tyson, Arizona State

The Cardinals could look in their own backyard to grab a wide receiver. Tyson has great footwork, an array of release packages, excellent body control at the catch point, and significant playmaking ability after the catch. Tyson has been slowed by a hamstring injury this season. But the numbers speak for themselves that he lives in the end zone, as he has 18 touchdowns over his last 20 games.

QB Ty Simpson, Alabama

The Kyler Murray era is nearing an end, so the Cardinals must think about finding their future franchise signal-caller. Despite only having one year as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, Simpson plays the game like someone with “pro-ready” skills. Simpson shows exceptional mental processing and pre-snap acumen, and he is an exceptionally accurate thrower with clean mechanics and excellent ball placement. He has 2,934 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and a 71.9 completion percentage.

RB Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame

The Cardinals’ running back situation remains a long-term question mark. While Trey Benson was drafted in 2024, James Conner isn’t going to be around much longer. Love would bring an element that Arizona’s backfield doesn’t have, as he has a blend of speed, explosiveness, and versatility as both a runner and a pass-catcher. He has run for 1,306 yards and 17 touchdowns to go with 26 catches for 274 yards and three scores this season.

DT Peter Woods, Clemson

The Cardinals addressed the defensive tackle position in the first round of this most recent draft with the selection of Walter Nolen. But beyond Nolen, there are few guaranteed long-term answers. Dalvin Tomlinson is in his 30s and will be a free agent after the 2026 season. Calais Campbell is also a free agent in 2026. Woods is a high-energy and athletic interior defensive lineman with good pass-rush and run-stopping ability. He has two sacks this season.

S Caleb Downs, Ohio State

Safety isn’t a huge need for the Cardinals. Still, they could opt to address the back end of the defense, as Jalen Thompson is set to hit free agency and Budda Baker will be 30 next season. Downs is a competitor who has the instincts and coverage ability to man up against receivers and tight ends as well as the tackling skills and physicality to play in the box and make plays in the open fields.

Cardinals release Xavier Thomas before Bucs contest

gettyimages-2190827110.jpg

The linebacker room for the Arizona Cardinals is a bit full, so the team released Xavier Thomas prior to this weekend’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

RELATED: WALTER NOLEN OUT THIS WEEK

Recently, LB B.J. Ojulari was placed back on the roster, and now word is that LB Baron Browning is ready to be released from concussion protocol. This placed a bulge in the linebacker corps. It took forever for Ojulari to return to the field and Browning has been out for two games.

imagn-26917651.jpg

Thomas was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft out of Clemson. He played sparingly on defensive packages as a rookie and was used some on special teams in 14 games. As a rookie, he had 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and one batted pass.

This year, he played quite a bit in preseason and has played in four regular-season games with zero starts, with no stats other than 15 defensive snaps and 42 special teams snaps.

Cardinals-Buccaneers second half ope thread

gettyimages-2249217061.jpg

The first drive was fun until Jacoby Brissett struck again.

His inability to finish drives continues to be an issue, and he’s missed a number of throws over the middle the last two weeks, all of that is why the Arizona Cardinals trail 10-3 at the half.

But I go back to what I’ve said since he started, this was inevitable. You can’t ask your QB to take 10-plus hits a game and expect him to continue to perform at a high level.

This is the Cardinals offense almost completely healthy by the way. Only the running backs are missing and the change at right tackle was what everyone wanted to see.

The issue is that when you’re getting repeatedly pummeled, you start to get gunshy. We are seeing that.

The other issue is the Cardinals defense needs to make a big play, not just plays.

The offense isn’t good. They run more plays than any other team in the NFL, but they don’t score, so all those yards are really meaningless when you aren’t scoring points at the end.

Can they start to convert in the second half? Let’s hope so.

Arizona Cardinals officially eliminated from playoffs

gettyimages-2249225983.jpg

It was never a question since the loss to the Tennessee Titans, but now it is a reality.

The Arizona Cardinals are officially eliminated from the NFL Playoffs.

What is staggering, is in their time in Arizona the Cardinals have never been eliminated this early.

Now, it’s a bit of semantics, because it happened on the last day of November so they are technically eliminated before December, but that is still another amazing feat this year.

People are split on things.

I’ve seen a lot of blame on the staff, as the team seems unprepared consistently.

I’ve seen it on the players because of the inability to consistently execute the gameplan.

I’ve seen excuses because of injuries.

I’ve seen people blame Monti Ossenfort.

When you are historically bad for a franchise that is one of the worst in all of sports history, then the blame should always start at the top.

None of the blame game will really matter when you realize that this is just another data point for a historically inept franchise, and there’s only one constant.

Arizona Cardinals open as big home underdogs ahead of matchup with Rams

gettyimages-2191708810.jpg

This could be a bad one.

The Arizona Cardinals are coming off another loss, this one their fourth straight after losing five straight earlier in the year.

And now, they get a pissed off Los Angeles Rams team who just blew a game against the Carolina Panthers after the Rams had looked unbeatable in their six game win streak.

That explains why the Rams are massive road favorites, as the Cardinals are 7.5-point underdogs at home according to our friends at FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Rams before their loss to the Panthers were riding a six game win streak, with their losses to the Niners in overtime on Thursday Night Football and an early season loss to the Eagles.

During their win streak they averaged 30.5 points per game, and even in their loss the offense put up 28 points.

Now, can the Cardinals do enough to slow down the Rams offense, and on the flipside, can they score on the Rams defense that was embarrassed yesterday by the Panthers and Bryce Young?

In that six game win streak, the Rams were giving up 12 points per game. Of course, maybe this will be a reverse of yesterday, where the Cardinals went into the game against a Bucs team that had been giving up 33.5 points per game and the Cardinals could only muster 17 points.

Maybe this week against a Rams defense that had been hot, they’ll be able to put up points.

Arizona Cardinals struggle in another close loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

gettyimages-2249216089.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals once again found themselves with a chance.

I guess that’s all that fans want anymore, because they fall to 1-5 with Jacoby Brissett as quarterback and now are 2-14 in the Jonathan Gannon era when any quarterback not named Kyler Murray starts games.

The defense once again played well enough to win, a second straight week, although it wasn’t as impactful as last week’s four turnovers forced game, but the offense was once again impotent.

Yardage and plays don’t matter when you don’t score points.

After giving up an average of 35.3 points per game the last three weeks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just needed to play the Arizona Cardinals to get things going again, allowing just 17 points.

On the surface the offense was fine, but they continue to fail when given opportunities and they continue to rely on a quarterback who is now 2-10 in his last 12 starts.

You can’t place blame on anything more than continued offensive ineptitude the last two weeks.

Maybe the tank really is on.

Coaching candidates to replace Cardinals’ Jonathan Gannon

gettyimages-2245897733.jpg

Yeah, it has come to this.

We all knew this day would come.

It’s just time.

The Arizona Cardinals did not just lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday; they were eliminated from any playoff contention in the 20-17 loss. Keep in mind, the team has five games remaining.

The offense is a roller coaster. Dropped balls are a constant. The offensive line struggles mightily. No running game. The defense is on the field so much that they just crash and burn in the final stages.

RELATED: CARDINALS OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

The Cardinals are now 3-9-0. It’s time. No more waiting around for this ship to right itself, despite five games left on the calendar.

Time to move on from head coach Jonathan Gannon.

The realization is that the Cardinals’ front office wanted to give him three years, but have regressed this year, staring down at 10+ losses. Getting beaten in double-digit games isn’t an issue in hockey, or soccer, or really, any other sport. But since football only plays 17 games, well, you get the point.

gettyimages-2248666495.jpg

This is Gannon’s third season. Yes, he was 4-13-0 in his first year, followed by 8-9-0 last season. That all indicates that this season should have increased to a 10-win season, if not higher. That is how three-year rebuilds work. Everyone understands a horrible first season followed by a year that displays improvement. But by the third year, the franchise should be in the postseason. Instead of double-digit wins, it is inevitable that the season will end with double-digit losses.

That is not in the three-year plan.

But there are so many things wrong with this ballclub that cannot, and will not, and have not been corrected.

Let’s just end it. Please.

For those of us who have met Gannon, he is a great guy. Very personable, nice, calm, pleasant, well-spoken, and obviously intelligent. A very good football man with an emphasis on defense. We all like Gannon the person. It’s nothing personal – just business.

And the business of Arizona Cardinals football isn’t pretty.

Fans hate that he shows minimal emotion during games while on the sideline. That is just who he is. He is very chill, and things do not rattle him. He is the Jalen Hurts of NFL coaches – calm, reserved, studious.

Does he have a passion for the game? Of course. Does he get upset with players who make dumb mistakes? Yes indeed, but not in front of God and everyone. He is a person who takes his grievances and closes the door to address his concerns.

The players love him. He is viewed as a player’s coach.

But plainly put: his offense sucks. That side of the ball has zero ability to adjust to the opponent’s defensive adjustments. In his press conferences, his continual reference that “we will learn from it” or “it’s on me” has gotten stale.

Rarely is there any accountability for mistakes.

And the quarterback situation just never gets solved. It just seems to always be the next new guy.

Yes, the offensive line has been a mess. We all know the offense will only go as far as the offensive line will take them. But nobody can predict – or halt – injuries, and it has been an ongoing battle all season, just like last year. Arizona has used four different offensive line groupings so far this year.

We all know how this season will end. Let’s just get this over with.

Here is a short list of qualified candidates to replace Gannon (in no particular order).

gettyimages-2229352914.jpg

Jesse Minter

Age: 42

DC Los Angeles Chargers

This choice works because Minter understands how to best complement an offense.

The Chargers are playing really well on defense this season. They rank #2 in pass defense and #12 in rushing defense. They are tied for second place in fewest passing touchdowns with 12.

Minter worked with the Baltimore Ravens organization, which always has a stiff defense, then worked for another Harbaugh by going to Michigan, where he won a National Championship.

He is the guy to get Arizona back to Red Sea core identity. He has enough youth to grow with the roster but has enough experience to actually run the team. A steady hand with real defensive chops who can mold this Cardinals defense.

gettyimages-2192093603.jpg

Joe Brady

Age: 36

OC Buffalo Bills

The Bills feature a balanced attack and, of course, have a very good quarterback to run it. That makes Brady look good. But Brady knows offense and how to correct situations.

He tends to use heavy personnel packages to gain a physical advantage. This may mean the offensive line might need to go through some changes, and either select some new guys early in the draft, make a trade or two, or be busy participants in free agency with a focus on the line. One of Brady’s traits is the use of motion to be able to confuse defenses with different formations.

He is adept at creating mismatches where the offense can run the ball when the defense will use fewer bodies in the box with receiver spreads. Brady also likes quick-read plays and uses his tight ends and slot receiver quite a bit. Currently, the Bills are the #1 rushing team in the league.

gettyimages-862306762.jpg

Jim Bob Cooter

Age: 41

OC Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have exploded on offense this season, and yes, have finally found a suitable quarterback who can run the ball when needed. Cooter has been a QB and a RB coach for different teams, so he knows how groupings work. He is also a former college quarterback.

One word to describe Cooter: meticulous. On gameday, he is prepared. He likes to spread the ball around and uses the run more than most. That works when you have a bellcow, which the Colts do in Jonathan Taylor, and so do the Cardinals if James Conner returns. But Taylor was almost an afterthought in this Indy offense until Cooter showed up.

Cooter includes elements such as the Zone Read and also the Power-Run option for his quarterback, which has brought flexibility to the Indianapolis offense. He prefers shorter, safer passes and is creative with play calls. And most importantly, he recognizes the talents of his players and adapts plays to fit their strengths.

gettyimages-2237670744.jpg

Jim Schwartz

Age: 59

DC Cleveland Browns

This hire makes the most sense. Everywhere Schwartz has coached, he has taken the defense to new heights. Just feed him a steady diet of capable defenders and watch the transformation. Players love him, although he doesn’t take any crap.

Cleveland may fire their head coach, and Schwartz just might slide into that opening where he already has a superstar defender in Myles Garrett. Everyone knows that Garrett is a great player, but under Schwartz’s tutelage he has been named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and is a lock to gain his second achievement this year.

Schwartz has converted every defense everywhere he has been employed. He already has head coaching experience when he was head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009-2013. They went to the playoffs a single season after going 10-6-0.

This season, Cleveland ranks #3 in pass defense and #10 against the run. They have allowed the third fewest rushing touchdowns (7) and only 18 passing scores. Stingy on converting first downs via the pass (#5) and the run (#6).

His defenses are known for being an aggressive, attacking style that places pressure on the quarterback. Schwartz will attack gaps, and his cornerbacks use man coverage, which frees up the linebackers to make tackles in the run game and provide coverage to tight ends and running backs. In 2023, the Browns’ defense was ranked #1.

Is there any confidence left in the coaching staff of the Arizona Cardinals?

gettyimages-2249216394.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Things are… well they are things.

The Arizona Cardinals are 3-9 and staring potentially a 14-loss season in the face, and that begs the question of whether or not you are confident in the direction of the team?

To start with, the defense has improved the last two weeks in losses to the Jaguars and Buccaneers. Not enough that they are like the Houston Texans this year, where you can get around a bad offense, but they are keeping them competitive in games.

However, the offense is an issue.

In the last two games, they have put up 356 yards of offense per game, and they have scored 17 points in those games on offense.

That is not ideal. A good amount of yards, a low amount of points. Think about that, 17 points per game would be the second best points against in the NFL.

So, do you think Gannon, if he does stay, can find an upgrade at the offensive coordinator position, that will come on board?

Arizona Cardinals announce return of LJ Collier from injured reserve

gettyimages-2234422309.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals continue to be banged up along their front lines, but could be getting a little bit of health back in the form of L.J. Collier.

The team announce today they have opened his 21-day practice window.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has designated defensive lineman L.J. Collier to return from the injured reserve list.

Collier can begin practicing and the team can activate him to the 53-man roster at any time during the next 21 days or at the conclusion of the three-week period.

In addition, the team has signed tight end Pharaoh Brown to the active roster from the practice squad and has re-signed wide receiver Bryson Green and running back Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad.

The signings took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Green will wear jersey #26 and Jefferson will wear #43.

Getting Collier back, even if it is only for the final two weeks, would give the Cardinals some added depth along the defensive front for the final games.

Let’s hope his return goes better than the others which we still have not heard about.

The Cardinals might be the best 3-9-0 club in the league

gettyimages-2249217061.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention after last Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Another close one, yet another “L” in the standings.

RELATED: CARDINAL OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

That’s just it. Another close game that they couldn’t win. The 2025 season is full of these types of contests. Have the late lead, then poof! It’s gone, and the stadium clean-up crew starts to get busy. Except for this game, the Cardinals never had the lead.

Sunday’s loss against the Bucs was a prime example. The Cardinals outgained their opponent but couldn’t find a way to win.

22 first downs to Tampa’s 13. 386 total yards to the Buccaneers 279. 6.3 yards average per play versus 4.9 yards. Went 2-2 in the Red Zone while the home team went 2-4. 40 pass attempts to the Bucs 28.

gettyimages-2249212237.jpg

Down 20-10, Arizona’s offense took control of the ball at its own 21-yard line with 8:58 left in the game. Seven plays were for positive yardage, including a key Brissett scramble for a first down, and suddenly the Cardinals were knocking on the door at the Tampa Bay 15.

QB Jacoby Brissett was having a great game. He then missed WR Michael Wilson. Second-and-10. TE Trey McBride ran a great route to which Brissett threw a dart for the touchdown. Nine plays, 73 yards, just four minutes of clock used. And the lead was cut to 20-17.

Now, it was up to the defense to get the ball back.

After the Chad Ryland kickoff, Tampa began on its own 21. Two short passes and a four-yard run got a first down. 2:42 left in the game. LB Baron Browning and rookie LB Cody Simon stuffed RB Bucky Irving for no gain. QB Baker Mayfield hit Irving on a swing pass, but Simon nailed him again for no gain. Now it was third down and 10. Mayfield dropped back to pass, was flushed, and then gained only five on a scramble at their own 32-yard line after the Browning tackle.

Punt team trots out. Defense held and gave the offense some wiggle room.

Tampa punter boomed a kick 59 yards to the Cardinals’ five-yard line, to which KR Greg Dortch only gained five yards. Arizona had a first down at its own nine-yard line, with 1:49 remaining. At least they had a chance, although being backed up made the odds unlikely.

Brissett hit Dortch for three yards, and then RB Michael Carter, who had to fight three defenders for a five-yard gain. An incomplete pass to the short middle to Xavier Weaver. Now, fourth-and-two. 55 seconds left on the clock. Brissett could not connect with Wilson just past the line to gain marker.

The Cardinals under Brissett have been able to drive up and down the field in most contests. The problem has been, getting more yards than your opponent and outplaying them in certain situations hasn’t translated to wins.

After the Buccaneers’ loss during the post-game press conference, Brissett stated:

“I know I get up here, and I sound like a broken record, but it’s just execution, man.”

That is pretty accurate.

Of course, with the offense, if you insert three new guys along the offensive line who have reputations of being nasty road graders, and get a stud running back, whether that is the return of Conner or some young blue-chipper, then this group should be an electric unit going forward.

gettyimages-2249227208.jpg

All season long, the Cardinals kept getting close to winning but not actually winning. It was like the roster had a jinx placed on it and kept recurring.

The details need to be improved. As Brissett mentioned, both sides of the ball need to find a method to complete execution and finish. Arizona has outgained its opponents in five of nine games this season. Why hasn’t that translated into victories? Seven losses have been by three points or fewer.

Too many opportunities in the Red Zone that either come up with nothing or end with a field goal instead of six points. Too many points left on the field. They are able to take control of games, only to have them slip away at the finish line.

Brissett added:

“I think [offensive coordinator Drew Petzing] has been doing a good job of putting us in the right situations and giving us opportunities to go out there and make plays. I think the guys are doing a lot of good things, making those plays when they come, when they’re there, but just coming down to execution and details and me helping the guys out.”

The fact is that Brissett and Petzing work well together. The OC understands that Brissett is a pocket passer first and foremost, and designs plays to fit his timing and ability to quickly scan the field as he goes through his progressions. Brissett doesn’t get shaky and take off like QB Kyler Murray is known for.

Arizona is 0-8, going against clubs that have a winning record.

Like every other NFL team, injuries have decimated this 2025 roster. But unlike every other NFL squad, the Cardinals have not found ways to get around the roster losses.

Too many fixes will need to be addressed with the ballclub going forward.

Kelvin Beachum named Arizona Cardinals Walter Payton Man of the Year

gettyimages-2245333442.jpg

As the NFL season winds down, one of the most important awards of the season is coming up, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

This year, Kelvin Beachum was named the 2025 Arizona Cardinals Walter Payton Man of the Year.

From the team:

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the league’s most prestigious honor, recognizing players who excel on the field and demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact beyond the game. As a winner, Beachum will receive up to a $40,000 donation to the charity of his choice. He will also wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the end of the season in recognition of his accomplishments on and off the field.

This is Beachum’s third time being nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award after previously being honored by the Cardinals in 2021 and Jets in 2018.

Beachum has been incredibly involved in his Arizona Cardinals tenure within the community and his work has led to this being his third career nomination.

Make sure to check out the Cardinals website for a number of charitable endeavors that Beachum has been involved with throughout his career.

Race to the Bottom 2.0: Another Cardinals loss

gettyimages-951991072.jpg

chalkboard-logo.jpg

The 2025 season appears that double-digit losses will become a reality.

Bummer.

And now that five games are remaining on the schedule, after last weekend’s loss to Tampa Bay, the league eliminated the Arizona Cardinals from any playoff contention.

RELATED: IS THERE ANY CONFIDENCE LEFT?

In the Christmas cartoon “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys realize that Santa Claus isn’t coming for them again this year.

On another Christmas Eve, the toys huddle around a fire with the ground saturated with a blanket of snow. One toy state he is going to bed to dream about next year. The Charlie in the Box says he doesn’t have any dreams left. The Cardinals fan utters that dreams are for suckers.

Yes, another Arizona Cardinals season is down the tubes. Another jacket purchase ruined. Yet another t-shirt bought on the premise of showing allegiance. More money out for season tickets, and now nobody wants or cares about. Two more home games to cheer on for what? Yeah – go Cardinals?

And no refunds. Another bummer.

Every team in the NFC West Division appears angling for a playoff berth. Three out of four teams just might become a thing now. This was supposed to be the Cardinals’ year. Year 3 of the three-year plan, right?

New goal and new vision: Getting the Number 1 overall spot in the April NFL draft. Can the Cardinals become the worst team in the league this year, and then have first choice of any blue-chip athlete in the draft?

If the season were to end today, here are the standings from the bottom upwards:

Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey Benson, among Arizona Cardinals out against Rams

gettyimages-2237793414.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals are… tanking hurting.

Jonathan Gannon announced today that the team would not get Kyler Murray back this season, but also had updates on a number of other players.

Marvin Harrison Jr. will miss this week due to a lingering heel issue that saw him struggling through, and eventually missing parts of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers loss.

On top of that, Trey Benson will not be activated this week, meaning unless they announce his activation next week, he will revert back to injured reserve and be done for the season as well.

RB Trey Benson won’t be activated yet. Gannon acknowledged he doesn’t know if Benson will return this season.

— Darren Urban (@Cardschatter) December 5, 2025

It is really interesting that the Cardinals coaches, training staff have not been able to figure out this with multiple players over the last couple of seasons. So, will Benson be back, what was the injury and how bad was it? Why is he not progressing, was there a setback?

The continue ambiguity over injuries is one of the most frustrating aspects of the Jonathan Gannon era. Yet, they seemed content to ride with the running backs in house, and then barely use them, so was this just because they assumed Benson would get healthy?

Anyways, this should be fun this weekend… right?

3 Cardinals with the most on the line at season’s end

gettyimages-2241110191.jpg

3-9-0.

That is what the Arizona Cardinals. A club that is teetering on losing double-digit games this season. There are five games left on the calendar. Two are home games. The Cardinals have already been stricken from the playoff invitation list. No, sir, no custom-printed invites will be sent to 8701 S Hardy Dr, Tempe, AZ 85284-2800.

RELATED: CONTINUING JOURNEY OF C HJALTE FROHOLDT

Despite not getting into the postseason, there is plenty to play for. For one, finish the season strong and build on that momentum for next year. Secondly, the squad plays the Los Angeles Rams in two of the final five contests. Be a spoiler with a division foe. Lastly, play for your job.

NFL players can get paid bank. They are young and can set up their children’s children if they are a superstar, or be compensated like a royal if they make a roster at all.

Yes, it’s a sport. Play for the money. Get paid handsomely.

Does anyone realize how many pro football players are out there that would love to become the 53rd man on any NFL roster? The United Football League is eight teams’ worth of guys as a perfect example. Athletes who end up in the Canadian Football League are there, taking a huge pay cut. Then there are the indoor leagues, such as Arena Football One, where guys get paid $600 a game plus apartment rent.

And how does a guy go from being in an NFL training camp to working for rent money? Being cut over and over. Not doing their job. Sleeping in meetings. Being over the 30-year-old threshold. Lack of effort. Lack of production.

That last one hits home. Instead of making progress, they regress. One year is tolerable, but after that, a player’s measuring stick gets shorter. Then, the label “journeyman” gets applied, followed by “free agent.”

The entire Cardinals’ roster will be going through auditions for the final five games. Guys will be evaluated by the entire season, but now that they know they will be watching the playoffs from their big screen TVs at home, these five games will be a test. A test to see what each player is made of. A test to measure their intensity levels and competitive nature. A test to see who is still playing to win, and who has cashed out.

Here are three players that the Cardinals should take a good, long look at to determine if they will return or find gainful employment elsewhere next season.

DE Darius Robinson

imagn-25050582.jpg

In last year’s NFL draft, the Cardinals thought they hit the lottery by improving both sides of the ball. They selected WR Marv Harrison out of Ohio State with the fourth overall pick in Round 1, and then could not believe that DE Robinson was still on the board later in the same round with the #27 pick, who was a powerful rusher who had a standout Senior Bowl. One blue-chip stud for both position coaches. Every GM’s dream to begin a draft.

But Robinson’s production isn’t the dominating force they once envisioned.

His rookie season was marred by a calf injury at the end of training camp. He was finally cleared to participate in late October and only played in 10 games with 20 total tackles and a single sack.

This year, he suffered a pec injury in Week 4 and later dealt with a groin issue, limiting his playing time.

Robinson has struggled to show any consistency with a pass rush or stop the run, for that matter. His overall Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade this season is a paltry 32.8 with just 14 total tackles, 8 pressures, and a single sack.

He is signed through the 2027 season, and the Cardinals just might decide to bring in another young buck to compete for the starting position opposite Josh Sweat and finally get some pressure going from both sides.

LG Evan Brown

imagn-27403394.jpg

Depending on who you talk to, this Cardinals’ offense appears to be just a player or two away from being a highly productive group.

If they can get their quarterback situation right, they possess one of the best receiving tight ends in the league, have productive offensive tackles, a very good center, good receivers, and, if James Conner returns, production at running back.

But Lord, the offensive guards are in shambles. One player who really stands out is Brown.

In April’s NFL draft, expect Arizona to select an offensive tackle and an offensive guard pretty high. Nobody would be upset if these new guys came via the first two rounds. Get them early and get them right.

Brown has the remainder of this season to prove he should be back in training camp. He is currently under a two-year contract with one season left.

His issues include inconsistencies in run blocking. He also has had a few injuries, namely neck, foot, and hamstring, which, of course, aren’t his fault. There are questions regarding his future roster depth.

Brown’s PFF grade is 49.0 for run blocking with four penalties, two sacks, and 35 pressures allowed.

DT Dalvin Tomlinson

gettyimages-2239470745.jpg

At the beginning of the free agency period in 2023, the signing of Tomlinson came as the off-season’s largest “splash” to improve the Cleveland Browns roster. He was tasked to stop the run, something that had plagued the Cleveland defense for the majority of the season before.

And Tomlinson does plug gaps. He does. The issue is, that is about all he offers.

He is not a playmaker. He is not a sack master. He does not generate a great deal of pass rush. He will have only a minimal effect on stopping the run.

What Tomlinson does well is that he is one of the most difficult players to move out of harm’s way.

As an offensive coordinator, all you have to do is run to other locations. That is how you make certain Tomlinson does not affect your game plan. You can’t move him, so run where he isn’t.

In his first season with the Browns, he netted just 12 solo tackles in 16 games. This meant he wasn’t getting to ball carriers. He did have 16 assists, but that is an indicator that he was not able to lose the engagement of his offensive lineman on time. Tomlinson does not possess a huge stable of moves, so his forte is that he stays right where he began.

Tomlinson does not use that extra inside space to his advantage, and yes, he does occasionally beat an offensive lineman, but it is rare.

The contract Tomlinson signed with the Browns was for four years. But after just two seasons and minimal production, Cleveland released him. Next, the Cardinals signed him to a two-year deal. What are they getting for their money? 18 total tackles in 12 games. Zero sacks. Two QB hits. One batted pass. Two knockdowns. One hurry. Three pressures.

A look at the depth chart has the rookie Walter Nolen already showing that he just might be a special player in this league.

Maybe Tomlinson will improve, but a look at his production suggests it will be more of the same.
