Capitals vs. Mammoth: How the Game Was Lost

The Washington Capitals were hoping to extend their winning streak on home ice to six games last night, but the Utah Mammoth clearly had other plans. The Mammoth was the last team the Caps had yet to face this season and they’ll only play once more (later this month in Utah). Coming into last night, the general expectation was for this game to be won (or lost) at 5-on-5. However, it was a special…

Rink Roundtable: Down the Stretch

60+ games into the season, what has been the biggest positive for the Caps? Rob: Jacob Chychrun has looked even better than he did last year when he signed his $9M extension. It’s always fair to wonder how players will hold up after signing a big deal, and you also knew some of the shooting percentages would regress from the career highs so many guys had in 2024-25. Well…

Capitals Trade Nic Dowd to Vegas

The Capitals have made their first pre-trade deadline move, sending forward Nic Dowd to the Golden Knights in exchange for Vegas’s second-round pick in 2029, their third-round pick in 2027, and goaltender Jesper Vikman. Dowd has been part of the Capitals since the 2018-19 season when he signed as a free agent, the longest tenured player who was not on the Stanley Cup team…

Capitals vs. Bruins Game Thread 3/7/26

The Caps – and all of us, really – are still reeling a bit from the recent trades that sent John Carlson and Nic Dowd out west. But, as Tom Wilson said yesterday, “tomorrow we’ll wake up and try to go to war for the rest of the year and play hard.” Well, tomorrow has arrived…so we move on. There are still games to be played, and despite moving out some players, a playoff spot within reach.

Capitals vs. Bruins Recap: Sluggish Loss in Key Game as Caps Fall 3-1

Let’s be honest, this one had the makings of being a rough outing from the start. Between a matinee game, on the road, on national television, and a day removed from trading away John Carlson…it’s amazing the Caps performed as well as they did. Plus: Jakob Chychrun’s move to set up what was essentially an empty net for Aliaksei Protas for the Caps’ first goal was absolutely ridiculous in the…

Capitals vs. Bruins: How the Game Was Lost

Considering all of the factors the Capitals were up against yesterday, it’s not surprising that they lost. If anything, the fact that it was as close as it was for the majority of the game is impressive (although, let’s be honest, a lot of that was down to Logan Thompson being Logan Thompson). In fact, this was a tie game for most of the afternoon, with the two teams held scoreless for the…

Capitals vs. Flames Recap: Caps Extinguish Flames in 7-3 Win

The Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames hit the ice at Capital One Arena tonight to wrap up their season series. The Caps got the better of the Flames in Alberta back in January with a 3-1 win, but both teams now look a little different after last week’s trade deadline. Speaking of looking different, Coach Carbery rolled out some new forward lines for tonight: Washington’s new guys…

Capitals vs. Flames: How the Game Was Won

The Washington Capitals faced off against the Calgary Flames last night, hoping to bounce back after a rough showing in Boston on Saturday. This was their second game since the trade deadline, which saw both Nic Dowd and John Carlson move out west. The Caps have a few new faces in their locker room though, with defenseman Timothy Liljegren and center David Kampf coming to DC at the deadline.

Oops! All Shooters

We first identified what has subsequently been referred to as the Caps’ “Oops! All shooters” problem almost two years ago. The problem, so the theory went, was that the Caps forward group was overloaded with shooters and lacked playmakers – too many finishers and not enough table-setters – and that by virtue of this imbalance, offense would be difficult to come by. Fast forward two seasons…

Capitals vs. Flyers Recap: Playoff Hopes Slip Further Away in 4-1 Loss

The Washington Capitals and Philidelphia Flyers played a mid week matchup tonight in Philadelphia. It was Timothy Liljegren’s first game with the Capitals and Matt Roy got the ‘A’ on defense. An important game for the Capitals playoff hopes was soured by a two-goal Flyers second period, and the Caps did little to tie the game after Trevor Zegras got the go-ahead goal.

Capitals vs. Flyers: How the Game Was Lost

The Washington Capitals traveled to Philadelphia for game one of a back-to-back set with their eyes on a potential move up the standings to try and catch a wild card spot. The first period started out strong as the Capitals special teams were solid, killing off two Flyer power plays and getting on the board with a power-play goal of their own courtesy of Ryan Leonard. But for the second game in a…
