The Buccaneers are signing former Dolphins linebacker Anthony Walker to a one-year deal.

The Buccaneers continued to add to their defense on Thursday morning with their second signing of the day on that side of the ball. Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Bucs are signing former Dolphins linebacker Anthony Walker to a one-year deal. Walker’s signing helps replace former Bucs linebacker K.J. Britt who signed with the Dolphins this week, as well.

Walker is entering his ninth season in the NFL after being selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Northwestern. This past season in Miami, Walker started eight games while playing in 14 total. He finished the year with 68 tackles, one sack, two pass breakups, and one interception. From 2017 to 2024, Walker as career totals of 581 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, four interceptions, 21 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.

In his final collegiate season, Walker was a Third-Team All-American and a First-Team All-Big Ten honoree.

Buccaneers ‘excited’ with the addition of Haason Reddick

Houston Texans v New York Jets

Tampa Bay will introduce their newest edge rusher Friday.

No, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles wasn’t pounding the podium Thursday talking about how excited he is with the addition of pass rusher Haason Reddick. Surely he’ll do so soon. But this time it was General Manager Jason Licht that talked of the team’s excitement after signing the veteran outside linebacker.

“We’re excited to add a competitor like Haason, who has proven himself to be among the league’s most-impactful pass rushers. His ability to get after the quarterback and disrupt offenses is exactly what we were looking to add to our defense,” said Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht. “He is a defensive playmaker who has a familiarity with our defensive scheme and possesses a unique pass rushing skillset that will be a great fit for us.”

Reddick has appeared in 124 career games between the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, making 83 starts and compiling 419 tackles (71 for loss), 102 quarterback hits, 59.0 sacks (14 strip sacks), 20 passes defensed, 18 forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. The eighth-year pro has also started all four of his career postseason games, totaling 10 tackles (two for loss), six quarterback hits, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Dating back to the 2020 season, Reddick has posted four seasons with double-digit sacks, tied for the second-most in the NFL and trailing only Myles Garrett (five). His 51.5 sacks across the past five seasons are the sixth-most in the NFL over that span, trailing only T.J. Watt, Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson, Nick Bosa and Micah Parsons. Reddick has recorded 15 forced fumbles since 2020 – the second-most in the NFL– including a league-leading 14 strip sacks across that time.

He originally entered the league as a first-round pick (No. 13 overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Haddon Heights, New Jersey, native played collegiately at Temple University (2013-16).

Bucs signing CB Kindle Vildor to 1-year deal

NFL: Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images

Kindle Vildor joins the Buccaneers defense on a one-year deal after spending the 2024 season with the Detroit Lions.

The Bucs made one of the first free agency moves of the day on Thursday morning by signing former Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor to a one-year deal, per NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Buccaneers reached agreement on a one-year deal with CB Kindle Vildor, per his agents Kevin Conner and Robert Brown.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 13, 2025

Vildor is entering his sixth NFL season after entering the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears back in 2020. He played three seasons there before embarking on stints with the Titans, Eagles, and Lions during the 2023 season. Vildor settled in with the Lions, most recently playing the entire season with the team in 2024.

In five professional seasons, Vildor has career totals of 124 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, 15 pass breakups, one interception, and one forced fumble.

While playing collegiately at Georgia Southern University, Vildor was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year and a Second-Team All-American in 2018. He had six interceptions and 17 pass breakups during his final two seasons at GSU.

Buccaneers re-sign Greg Gaines

Tampa Bay continues to re-sign their own.

The 2025 offseason is off and running. Tampa Bay's plan has become quite clear. The Buccaneers have, while addressing the needs last season clearly exposed, taken care of their own.

In comparison to offseasons in recent memory, Jason Licht and the Bucs' front office have had a relatively simple task this time around— Re-sign Lavonte David and Chris Godwin, address the team's pass-rush, and keep last year's team intact. Coming off a year that required deals to be made with a franchise quarterback, one of the team's most storied names, the league's most expensive safety, and the anchor of protection for that franchise quarterback's blindside, 2025's offseason plan is a peaceful stroll down the Riverwalk.

Tampa Bay has already checked off the boxes of Chris Godwin's return and adding a significant upgrade to Todd Bowles' pass-rush.

The remaining piece of the puzzle? Keeping last year's team intact.

Greg Gaines has been a rotational defender for the Buccaneers since 2023. He’s tallied 41 tackles and two sacks in a Bucs’ uniform. 2025 will be Gaines’ seventh season in the league and third in Tampa Bay, after agreeing to terms on a new one-year deal.

2025 Buccaneers 7-Round Mock Draft: Post-Free Agency Edition

91st Allstate Sugar Bowl - Notre Dame v Georgia

With the roster picture a little clearer, let’s investigate some potential draft scenarios.

The 2025 NFL Draft is sneaking up quick, now only 5 weeks away.

The final act of the process will accelerate quickly with college pro days, top 30 visits and final medical checks that allow teams to put their finishing touches on painstaking evaluations they’ve built over several months.

The Bucs enter draft season with an even more defined focus than when free agency started: upgrade the defense.

Who might be a possible target? Let's run through some possible names.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 07 SEC Championship Game - Georgia vs Texas
Photo by Rich von Biberstein/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Round 1, Pick 19 - LB Jalon Walker, Georgia

This one requires some outside-the-box thinking that I feel Todd Bowles and Co. may be more open to now than they were before, and I think it’s strongly evidenced by who they signed as a free agent a week ago.

Walker is, by all accounts, a marvel on and off the field. A dynamic athlete with unimpeachable leadership and character should already skyrocket him high into the realm of interest given how much emphasis the Bucs have placed on those traits in their first-round evaluation process (see Tristan Wirfs, Calijah Kancey, and Graham Barton).

Jalon Walker is a coaches dream.

➖ Run game discipline/fundamentals
➖ Rapid trigger + athleticism

— SCOUTD (@scoutdnfl) January 17, 2025

What he does on the field as an early down off-ball linebacker with potentially game-wrecking pass rushing skills should further intrigue Tampa. I view this as a 2-for-1 opportunity if it’s played the right way, and it should be considered as a very real possibility given how the Bucs approached last year. They hoped to play Lavonte David alongside the tandem of K.J. Britt and SirVocea Dennis, with the former serving as the early down enforcer and the latter taking over passing downs. That didn’t really work out when Dennis got hurt early and Britt turned out to be pretty terrible.

In theory, this wasn’t a terrible plan and the team could see a much more successful iteration play out with Walker and Dennis. Walker is light years more athletic and dynamic than Britt, which would allow him to handle those early down off-ball duties better while pinning his ears back on passing downs (which Britt also could not do).

You know what player has served similar roles in his past? Haason Reddick, who the Bucs just signed to be a proven veteran pass-rusher. Theoretically, you could have Walker play this hybrid role and find out what he does best while learning a wide swath of knowledge from some excellent on-field role models in Reddick and David.

(TRADE) Round 2, Pick 55 - CB Maxwell Hairston, Kentucky

The term “ballhawk” has been the buzz word of the offseason, and for good reason given how the Bucs managed a paltry 7 interceptions all year (tied for fourth-worst in the league). They simply must improve both their cornerback depth and overall playmaking ability, and Hairston represents a very intriguing option in that regard.

Hairston posted six interceptions (three returned for TDs) over his last 20 games. He shows a strong understanding of zone coverage with the ability to diagnose route progressions and read the quarterback, pairing that with tremendous burst to the ball. He lit up the Scouting Combine with a 4.28 40-yard dash and some explosive jumps to boot, demonstrating his athleticism that pops on and off the field. He’s undersized bulk-wise at just 183 pounds, and the tackling still needs to improve a lot despite good, consistent effort, but he does have good length that the Bucs look for at almost 6-foot with 31” arms.

In this scenario, the Bucs drop back a couple spots and gain a 4th round pick from the Los Angeles Chargers while forfeiting their seventh rounder, giving them valuable flexibility on Day 3.

Nebraska v USC

Round 3, Pick 84 - DL Ty Robinson, Nebraska

Jason Licht goes back to his alma mater for the first time in years to pick Robinson as added support for the defensive front 7.

Someone who prides himself on roughneck, blue-collar style football, Robinson isn’t flashy but he’s smart with elite-level physicality, strength, and toughness to put guys through the ringer for 4 quarters. At 6’5”, 288 pounds, Robinson has the ideal size to fit into Will Gholston’s role as a base end in Todd Bowles’s scheme.

Nebraska Ty Robinson’s calves are actually tree trunks when you see them up close in person. His barrel chest is what you call “Country Strong”

— Clint Goss (@NFLDraftDome) February 27, 2025

His length and overall quickness / pass rushing skill aren’t remarkable, which puts a cap on his overall ceiling, but finding a reliable grinder with some unexpected pop who can play an effective role in a rotation is always a win you’ll take, especially in the third round.

Reese’s Senior Bowl 2025 - Practice
Photo by Derick E. Hingle/Getty Images

Round 4, Pick 121 - CB Caleb Ransaw, Tulane

A double dip? Licht has done it before at the cornerback position twice and there’s a good chance he’ll do it again this year.

With the idea that Hairston lines up on the outside, the Bucs might look to bolster their nickel spot if they plan to play Tykee Smith, last year’s standout draft pick, at safety more. Christian Izien is a bulldog who plays hard, but he’s a limited player who’s better served as a versatile role player / backup.

Enter Ransaw, another player who fits that “bulldog” mentality but with better top-end athletic traits. Ransaw may be the best run-defending big nickel in the class thanks to his well-built frame and excellent fundamentals, which the Bucs desperately lacked at times in 2024. He’s not the most fluid athlete though, which could lead to struggles in man coverage in the rare instances Tampa actually plays it, but he’s more than adequate in zone.

Ransaw shows the necessary package of traits to also continue the team’s pipeline of corner-to-safety cross-trains if they decide it prudent.

Wyoming v Illinois

(TRADE) Round 4, Pick 125 - WR Pat Bryant, Illinois

Getting back Chris Godwin served as a big relief for a roster than could not only ill-afford to lose him offensively but also because of how badly they need to build on defense.

After four straight picks to bolster all three levels of the defense, Tampa uses this hypothetical extra fourth rounder to invest in its receiving corps further with the savvy Pat Bryant from Illinois. Though he rarely got to show it because of the Illini’s anemic pass offense, the 6’2”, 208-pound Bryant still made second-team All-Big 10 in 2024.

Pat Bryant is one of my favorite mid-round WRs in the 2025 draft

Big, coordinated WR with great ball skills. Keep an eye on the QB, Taylor Elgersma from Wilfred Laurier in Canada too pic.twitter.com/hrYY9sUAX4

— Jacob Infante (@jacobinfante24) February 1, 2025

Built similarly to Godwin physically, Bryant showcases some excellent body control and ball skills to make focus catches through traffic and up in the air, which the Bucs could use more of in their depth players. He’s a long strider who can eat turf quickly if given open space, though he lacks the shiftiness and route polish to consistently get open against stickier corners. He’ll find more success getting schemed open on short and intermediate routes to utilize his good YAC instincts.

Bryant gives the Bucs more high-upside depth beyond their top 3 while giving an intriguing option to develop for the future, which they attempted but failed to receive from Trey Palmer. Bryant is also a very willing run blocker, which the Bucs typically value highly.

NCAA Football: Senior Bowl
Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images

Round 5, Pick 157 - IOL Clay Webb, Jacksonville State

The Bucs are all set for starters on the offensive as they completely return all 5 guys from last year, but they could continue reinforcing the backup spots.

Elijah Klein is an upside pick from last year’s draft so he’s in good standing, but their other interior options are lacking a bit – especially with no clear backup center currently on the roster. The Bucs had such a huge leap in success last year in large part to a young offensive line that continually receives investment, so someone like Webb would be good to develop behind budding star Graham Barton at the keystone.

Webb originally attended Georgia as a top center recruit, but he rarely saw the field and transferred. He did play guard at Jacksonville State, which gives him some flexibility that Tampa values, but his optimal position is definitely center due to unideal length and bulk.

Jacksonville State’s Clay Webb was one of the 3 best National OL that I studied today at practice. Play strength was impressive all day. pic.twitter.com/ZX2Ywlhvjm

— Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) January 28, 2025

He’s a good mover with solid body control and the smarts needed to step into playing time in a pinch, which is all you can hope for from a Day 3 offensive line pick.

Buccaneers NFL Draft Target: CB Shavon Revel, East Carolina

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Could the Bucs look to find a corner early in the draft?

With the NFL draft quickly approaching, we will be taking a closer look at some players the Buccaneers may have some interest in this April.

We are starting off with a position the Bucs could target early and that’s where East Carolina corner Shavon Revel comes into play. Revel is someone the Bucs could be keeping a close eye on so let’s learn a bit more about him.

Shavon Revel’s Collegiate Career

Revel actually began his college career at Louisburg College, but his 2020 season never happened due to the pandemic. He would play six games in 2021 before transferring to East Carolina. His first year there he played mostly special teams, but it was his 2023 season that would put him on the map.

He received second team All American Athletic Conference honors for his play in 2023. He had 54 combined tackles and one interception in 2023 and there was a lot of optimism for him heading into 2024.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 02 East Carolina at Michigan

Revel makes a tackle against Michigan

Revel started the 2024 campaign off hot, having two interceptions in his first three games. Unfortunately, Revel would suffer a torn ACL in during practice in September of 2024 which would end his senior season early.

Pro Day and Scouting Combine

Revel is still recovering from the torn ACL injury so he did not test at the NFL scouting combine and he is not expected to do anything at the East Carolina pro day either. However, he did measure in at the combine to remind everyone of the physical nature he possesses.

He measured in at 6’2” and 194 pounds. While I’m sure some teams would prefer he bulk up a bit, the length he has combined with the speed that is shown on tape will be tempting for teams looking for an impact corner.

What Revel can do for the Bucs in 2025

Assuming he is healthy and good to go to start the 2025 season, which the expectation is that he is, Revel could come in and immediately be one of the most physically gifted corners the Bucs have and probably would have the most potential out of the entire group.

However, with Jamel Dean still on the roster as of now and the team being big fans of Zyon McCollum, it would be an uphill battle for Revel to be the CB1 or CB2 on this team in his rookie season. Revel played almost exclusively on the outside while at East Carolina, so his rookie season may essentially be a red shirt year.

We have seen Jamel Dean have issues with staying healthy and on the field though throughout his career so Revel could definitely find playing time eventually even if he wouldn’t be listed as a starter on the initial depth chart.

Three-Year Outlook

If the Buccaneers are drafting Revel, it’s going to be using a premium draft pick so that would mean they envision him as being one of their top corners in three years' time. He has the physical traits and potential to be a really good corner in the NFL if he stays healthy and puts it all together.

When watching him and seeing his frame, he is very similar to Sauce Gardner and Tariq Woolen, two corners who have found success in the NFL. If Revel were to be drafted by the Bucs, I think there is a good chance that three years from now he plays a major role on their defense.

Stock Report

Revel is considered a late round one/early round two pick that could potentially sneak into the middle of the second round depending on how his medicals turn out.

CBS’ Chris Trapasso’s latest mock has Revel heading to the Las Vegas Raiders at 24th overall after a trade while NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah’s most recent mock doesn’t have the East Carolina product in the first round at all.

Buccaneers NFL Draft Target: DL Alfred Collins, Texas

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Defense will surely be on Tampa Bay's mind in this year's draft, but will Alfred Collins be a defender they think of?

The Buccaneers have spent the first portion of their offseason ensuring that new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard would have all 11 offensive starters returning from a season ago, when the team boasted a top-5 unit by most metrics.

Tampa Bay's defense, a group that undoubtedly had its struggles last season, has also been addressed this offseason. The addition of Haason Reddick (the potential rare bargain-splash-move) should he return to form, has been accompanied by the return of living legend Lavonte David and Anthony Nelson. A new piece at linebacker, Anthony Walker Jr., has been added and a couple of veteran corners (Kendall vildor, and Bryce Hall for a run-it-back campaign) have joined the group also. Even still, the team figures to go defense-heavy in the draft.

An argument could be made the Buccaneers have given themselves, through the aforementioned defensive signings and re-signings, the flexibility to approach the draft with an open mind. The Bucs don't need any one position more than another. Todd Bowles' unit simply needs playmakers and capable performers. Enter, Alfred Collins—

College career

In five years of collegiate play, Collins has been consistent and steady for the Longhorns. Collins, suiting up in every available contest since 2020, sets him up for a floor of a reliable career at the professional level. Collins' 7.5 career sacks, two turnovers accounted for, and single year-best 55 tackles last season, are not gaudy numbers to that manifest excitement— That does not mean Collins, as a player, doesn't provide value.

NFL Draft pre-game

While the Longhorns have not had their Pro Day yet (March 25th), Alfred Collins was at the league's annual Scouting Combine— Though he did not participate fully. Collins measured at a massive 6'6" at over 330 pounds, to go along with nearly 35-inch arms.

Collins did not sprint in a straight line or lift at the Combine, but he did jump. He registered a 26” vertical jump and an even eight-foot broad jump.

Alfred Collins' fit for the Buccaneers

There’s no such thing as a cant-miss prospect, but it’s really hard to imagine a team drafting Alfred Collins and their run defense not immediately improving. Dude sheds blocks like he's pulling weeds in the yard pic.twitter.com/4hwLccloyx

— James Foster (@NoFlagsFilm) February 13, 2025

At the beginning of the new league year, it would've appeared unlikely that Tampa would to go with an interior defensive linemen in the earlier rounds of the NFL Draft as the defense had more pressing needs. Following a few strategic moves by Jason Licht, the Buccaneers have achieved genuine flexibility. Collins may not have the traditional pass-rush impact fans like to see, however, a dominant run defender can have impact all the same.

For the Buccaneers, while the duo of Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea are an elite tandem, Tampa must face a few realizations.

Kancey's explosive play has been intercepted by injuries throughout his Buccaneers' tenure. The former first-rounder only played in 12 games a season ago and failed to play a full slate of the games in his rookie campaign as well.

Even looking past the concerns of Kancey's health, the Buccaneers have an aging Will Gholston (currently a free agent, who would likely return for a low price— should Tampa want him) and a 2022 second-round pick in Logan Hall who has been anything but a lock to be long-term answer across the front to think about.

Collins' ability to join the Buccaneers in 2025, providing depth and a rotational piece while also giving Todd Bowles a potential long-term starting option— Depending on his development in the system— is something that must intrigue Jason Licht and the Buccaneers.

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield talks about faith and how God taught him a lesson

Washington Commanders v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

A conversation on digging deep and realizing there is always something greater than football.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has always been open about his faith. He’s discussed countless times before on how much his faith plays a big role in his life. It’s a theme we’ve seen across the NFL from stars like Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. But ahead of this third Sunday of the Lenten season, Mayfield joined the good folks at Sports Spectrum Friday to discuss several aspects of his faith. Notably, how a lesson from God brought him back to reality on his identity.

When talking about his transition into the NFL from college and realizing he made it as a football player, Mayfield revealed how he was only focused on that rather than being something more.

“[God] had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize I am more than a football player. There’s much more going on than the game of football,” said Mayfield. “For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom.”

The veteran quarterback would add how challenges in his marriage, a lack of vulnerability as a person, and his career being ‘stripped down’ made him open his eyes and ‘dive back in’ to his faith and accepting grace.

"For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom."

— Sports Spectrum (@Sports_Spectrum) March 22, 2025

Mayfield’s faith journey also reflects his personal growth as a father, a topic he discussed on the podcast, noting how becoming a “girl dad” has deepened his spiritual and emotional maturity. That maturity, though, will also spread into the locker room.

When asked if a young player comes and asks him who Jesus was to him, Tampa Bay’s signal caller would set aside his helmet and put his faith in front of everything else.

“Jesus is grace, perfection. Somebody that sacrificed everything, that gave us this opportunity to live life.”

Whether it is immediately following a game or on podcasts and TV shows, Mayfield sharing his words on faith is refreshing and a trend we are beginning to see from more and more players.

Buccaneers NFL Draft Target: S Malaki Starks

NCAA Football: Mississippi State at Georgia

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Might the Bucs search for Antoine Winfield, Jr.’s running mate?

The Buccaneers endured crippling injuries throughout their entire secondary in 2024, which both exposed lack of depth and created an open starting spot once again.

Jordan Whitehead returned on a 2-year deal but played ineffectively and then sustained serious injuries in a car accident, which led to his release and unlikely return. While it’s sad to see him go (again), the Bucs will be on a lookout for another partner for Antoine Winfield, Jr., who will hope to rebound after struggling through several ailments of his own.

If the Bucs consider a secondary upgrade crucial enough to spend a first-rounder in the 2025 NFL Draft, Malaki Starks will likely top the list as a prospect. Let’s dig more into the talented playmaker from the University of Georgia.

MALAKI STARKS’S COLLEGIATE CAREER

Starks began his collegiate career as one of the most highly touted prospects in the nation.

A consensus 5-star recruit and top-15 prospect nationally in 2022, Starks fielded offers from several P5 programs but settled on his local Georgia Bulldogs. He rifled onto the scene immediately by starting as a true freshman on a National Championship-winning squad, totaling 68 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 7 pass breakups.

His sophomore year saw him ascend to greater heights by earning consensus first-team All-American and All-SEC honors, as well as finishing as a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski and Jim Thorpe awards. He recorded 52 tackles, 3 interceptions, 7 pass breakups.

Starks saw a slight regression in 2024 with more uneven play, recording lows in interceptions (1) and PBUs (3) but still managed to lead the team in tackles (77) and make second-team All-American and All-SEC before declaring early for the NFL Draft.

PRO DAY AND SCOUTING COMBINE

Starks, who measured at 6-foot-1 and 197 pounds, produced a mixed bag of results at both the NFL Scouting Combine and his Georgia Pro Day on March 12.

The combine saw him tally some really strong speed numbers, with a great 40 time (4.5 flat) and 10-yard split (1.56). These were cemented with his measured MPH in the on-field drills, which all ranked first among attendees for defensive backs.

Georgia safety Malaki Starks recorded the fastest top speed among safeties in five different drills.

Short Shuttle: 15.24 mph
W Drill: 17.92 mph
Gauntlet Drill: 18.39 mph
Line Drill: 18.66 mph
Teryl Austin Drill: 18.74 mph

— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) March 1, 2025

However, Starks produced poor agility testing (7.26 3-cone and 4.45 short shuttle) and a bad vertical jump result (just 33”), which could be concerning. His lateral stiffness does show up on tape with struggles to stay connected in man coverage.

That said, the straight-line speed will play at the pro level and he’s very intelligent and skilled at the nuances of the safety position, which came through in drills he did at the Combine and Pro Day that received widespread acclaim.

The Bucs typically shy away from non-elite athletes in the first round, so that could compromise Starks’ chances of ending up in Tampa, but he’s not terribly worse in RAS than Winfield Jr., who recorded a 7.81 (just “good”) with the benefit of no agility testing,

Malaki Starks is a FS prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored an unofficial 5.50 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 498 out of 1105 FS from 1987 to 2025.

WHAT STARKS CAN DO FOR THE BUCS IN 2025

If Starks is getting drafted by the Bucs, it will come with the expectation of being a starter right away.

Starks comes from a blue blood defensive pipeline with the football smarts and sufficient athleticism to be a cornerstone as soon as this year. He routinely displayed the ability to play deep single-high, split-safety, nickel, and down in the box, which would play exactly into what Todd Bowles loves in his defensive backs.

Bowles likely has plenty of familiarity with Starks already since the Bucs took his teammate, Tykee Smith, in the 2024 draft. Smith immediately blossomed and was one of the few bright spots for a battered Bucs secondary. Bowles’s son Troy also attended Georgia so that’s another added layer of familiarity.

Starks’s combination of size, speed, and physicality leads to several plays on the ball, where his production really shined over three years (6 total interceptions, 17 PBUs). Given that “ballhawk” has been one of the biggest buzzwords of the offseason so far, that will definitely check a box. He’s an excellent tackler and twitchy box defender who can be relied upon in run support.

MALAKI STARKS pic.twitter.com/4yLDSscDbe

— Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) August 31, 2024

Being able to confidently mix Winfield, Smith, Starks and other parts of the defense from a variety of looks would massively benefit the entire defense.

THREE-YEAR OUTLOOK

The outlook should be bright for Starks.

Several players of his archetype have consistently succeeded at the pro level, like Winfield Jr., Xavier McKinney and Jessie Bates. If you’re going to bet on someone with “average” athleticism, safety is the position to do it when the other traits shine so brightly and consistently.

Starks could easily establish a floor as a good starter right away and rapidly ascend into an impact asset at his position by his third or fourth year, with any luck. If there’s one thing that can be said about the Bucs defense, it’s that safety is very often one of its greatest strengths. Starks would be in an optimal position to succeed here.

STOCK REPORT

NCAA Football: Georgia at Alabama
Gary Cosby Jr.-Imagn Images

Starks has been widely heralded as a top-20 player for years now, though the process has seen projections occasionally slip into the second round – mainly due to that subpar athletic testing.

Given safety’s depressed value relative to other positions, it seems very likely Starks will be available in the 15-20 range and quite possibly beyond, which would mirror the draft positions of those other aforementioned elite safeties (all second-rounders).

Bleacher Report’s Cory Giddings projects Starks as an immediate impact player and bonafide first-rounder, as does The 33rd Team’s Kyle Crabbs.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein is less bullish, ranking Starks as his fourth-best safety behind South Carolina’s Nick Emmanwori, Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts, and Oklahoma State’s Billy Bowman Jr.
