Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield comes in at No. 50 on the NFL Top 100

High marks for Tampa Bay’s signal caller.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield earned the No. 50 spot on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2025, as voted by his peers, marking a significant milestone in his resurgent career. The ranking, revealed Monday morning, reflects Mayfield’s standout 2024 season, where he led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 record and a playoff berth.

— NFL (@NFL) August 4, 2025

Mayfield, 30, threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, showcasing improved decision-making and leadership. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl nod and solidified his role as Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback after signing a three-year, $100 million extension.

“Yeah, Baker is a competitor, man,” said San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in the video above. “He’s one of those guys that you know any time he’s on the field, he’s gonna elevate everybody else’s game around him and make some crazy plays.”

The NFL Top 100, compiled annually, highlights the league’s elite based on player votes. Mayfield’s rise from an unranked position last year underscores his redemption arc after bouncing between teams earlier in his career.

Buccaneers restructure Baker Mayfield’s contract

usa_today_26415388.jpg

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have restructured quarterback Baker Mayfield’s contract, guaranteeing $30 million of his $40 million salary for the 2026 season, previously unguaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move, finalized in April, maintains the three-year, $100 million deal signed in 2024, with no extension of terms.

Buccaneers have reworked QB Baker Mayfield’s contract to give him $30M guaranteed in 2026 — a year that previously had no guarantees, per sources.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 28, 2025

Mayfield, 30, enjoyed a career-best 2024, completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and a 106.8 passer rating, leading Tampa Bay to a fifth consecutive playoff berth. The restructuring converted $30 million of his 2025 base salary into a roster bonus, reducing his 2025 cap hit to $23.88 million and saving $14.4 million in cap space, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.

The adjustment signals the Buccaneers’ confidence in Mayfield, who revitalized his career in Tampa after stints with Cleveland, Carolina, and the Rams. General manager Jason Licht expressed a desire to extend Mayfield long-term, per The Athletic.

Bucs sign QB Teddy Bridgewater

gettyimages-1273745750.jpg

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today signed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater (6-2, 215) has appeared in 79 career games, making 65 starts, across 10 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2014–17), New Orleans Saints (2018–19), Carolina Panthers (2020), Denver Broncos (2021), Miami Dolphins (2022) and Detroit Lions (2023–24). He has completed 1,372-of-2,067 career pass attempts (66.4%) for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns to earn a passer rating of 90.5, while adding 856 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. A Pro Bowl selection in 2015, Bridgewater owns a 33-32 career record as a starter.

Originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (No. 32 overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft, Bridgewater started 12 games as a rookie and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

The Miami, Florida, native played collegiately at the University of Louisville (2011–13), starting 39 games and completing 781-of-1,142 passes (68.4%) for 9,817 yards and 72 touchdowns. He concluded his tenure at Louisville as the program leader in completion percentage, while ranking third in passer rating (157.2), passing yards and passing touchdowns. During his time with the Cardinals, Bridgewater collected Big East Rookie of the Year (2011), Big East Offensive Player of the Year (2012), First-Team All-Big East (2012) and Second-Team All-AAC (2013) recognition. He will wear No. 16 for Tampa Bay.

The team also announced they removed guard Sua Opeta from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. In addition, the club has waived punter Jake Julien.

Welcome to the new Bucs Nation: A fresh look, fewer ads and a new feature

Things will look a little different around here today.

A few weeks ago we told you something new was coming to Bucs Nation and today it’s here. Things are cleaner, faster and easier to use. There are the same writers, coverage, comments, and community you’ve come to rely on, now with less clutter and clunkiness.

Let’s dive in. If you scroll down the page on your phone or computer, it’s smoother. You’ll notice that the most talked-about stories have a bigger font displaying the number of comments. You’ll also see a section called Active Conversations to point you to the busiest conversations right now.

But there’s two changes we’re most excited to tell you about:

Fewer ads for logged-in users

Our loyal readers and commenters are the heartbeat of our communities, and with this new design we’re excited to offer them fewer ads when they’re logged in. Specifically:

  • Video players will no longer chase you down the page. Just scroll past one and it will be gone.
  • Full page pop-ups that would sometimes interrupt your commenting experience have been disabled.

You can log in or sign up here and check it out.

A new feature by the community, for the community: The Feed

Today we’re launching a brand new space for you to come together. The Feed is a running stream of posts and updates from you, the community, mixed in with links and updates from the team and our staff. Think of it as our community’s group text where you can easily grab your phone and share a link to a story, post a question or write your own post on the day’s news.

You can find it in two places:

  • On the homepage, adjacent to the top stories. Community participation is core to who we are, so we want it right on the front page to share your stuff.
  • A devoted homepage for The Feed where you can see the full stream of posts coming in from the community. You might want to bookmark that.

Log in or sign up here and you can start posting on The Feed and seeing fewer ads immediately.

Today’s launch is a big deal for our community, and it’s also a kickoff of broader efforts to build around the community we have here. Soon you’ll get alerts when someone replies to your comment or your post on The Feed, with more to come thereafter. We want to put the community in the driver’s seat, so let us know what you want in the comments below or in The Feed.

If you want to dig into more of this updated experience, head over to this post on sbnation.com from SB Nation’s Head of Product Ed Clinton, where he expands on the changes in our ads and design. Ed will be responding to questions in the comments. If you have any questions about how to log in to our new system, check out this article from last week.

Injuries hit Bucs hard at training camp

2226046712.jpg

Injuries are part of the game. But some are of a different magnitude than others.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers face a challenging start to their 2025 season as rookie linebacker David Walker has been sidelined for the year with a torn ACL, sustained during Friday’s training camp practice. The fourth-round pick from Central Arkansas, who earned the Buck Buchanan Award for his standout FCS performance (23 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks in 2024), was poised to bolster the Bucs’ pass rush behind starters Haason Reddick and Yaya Diaby.

Head coach Todd Bowles called it a “redshirt year” for the promising 25-year-old, who had impressed in rookie minicamp.

“He was making a big impact early. Obviously, we were counting on him to do a lot of things,” Bowles said. “We’ve got other guys that have to step up. I told him he has to look at this as a redshirt year. It’s unfortunate. It didn’t look like it was too much on film, but it ended up being that.”

Meanwhile, tight end Cade Otton, a key offensive contributor with career-highs of 59 receptions and 600 yards in 2024, is nursing a minor hamstring tweak. Bowles noted the team is taking a cautious approach with Otton, who sat out Monday’s practice but is expected to return soon, avoiding a more serious injury.

Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka is the talk at camp

gettyimages-2226691635.jpg

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka is turning heads in his first NFL training camp, drawing rave reviews from coaches and teammates thus far.

The former Ohio State star has quickly adapted, showcasing a blend of athleticism and intelligence that’s rare for a first-year player.

Head coach Todd Bowles has been particularly impressed, noting Egbuka’s exceptional football IQ.

“His football IQ is far beyond a guy coming out of college,” Bowles said. “It shows up as far as leverage, when he’s being doubled, when he has to stop, when he has to break a route off, when he has to block somebody and then move to another gap and take the next guy. It’s just the little things that you would think you have to teach the whole way, he’s been doing the whole time.”

Egbuka’s seamless transition has bolstered Tampa Bay’s receiving corps, making him a key target in the passing game. As the season progresses, expect Egbuka to continue dazzling fans and coaches with his polished play.

Buccaneers vs. Titans: Top stats from the preseason opener

gettyimages-2228607362.jpg

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rolled to a 29–7 victory over the Tennessee Titans in their Preseason Week 1 opener at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs were carried by strong performances from quarterback Kyle Trask and running back Owen Wright while the defense forced three turnovers.

Below are some of the top stats with highlights from tonight’s game.

Tampa Bay:

  • QB Kyle Trask went 12-of-16 for 129 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions.
  • RBs Owen Wright and Sean Tucker each found the end zone: Wright rushed for 87 yards and 1 TD, Tucker added 50 yards and 1 TD.
  • Rookie WR Emeka Egbuka made his NFL preseason debut with one catch for 21 yards. Receiver Ryan Miller led all the receivers with six catches for 66 yards.

  • Jackson, on top of his interception, led the defense with six tackles and one sack.

Tennessee:

  • Rookie QB Cameron Ward completed 5-of-8 passes for 67 yards in his pro debut, orchestrating the Titans’ only scoring drive.
  • RB Tony Pollard punched in their lone score with a 1-yard rushing TD.

Buccaneers rookie linebacker only player with a sack and interception after Week 1 of the preseason

gettyimages-2228611070.jpg

In a standout performance over this past weekend’s preseason action, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker Nick Jackson emerged as the only NFL player across the entire slate of preseason games to record both a sack and an interception.

Greg Auman of Fox Sports noted the feat earlier Sunday.

Two games left today, but in the first 14 preseason games this weekend, Bucs rookie LB Nick Jackson was the only NFL player to get both a sack and an interception. 28 had picks, 48 had sacks, but only Jackson had both.

— Greg Auman (@gregauman) August 10, 2025

Officially, with all the games in the books for the weekend, we can now say he was the lone player with such an accomplishment.

Jackson’s breakout performance serves as a promising glimpse of what the Bucs may have in store at linebacker. His ability to contribute on both pass rush and coverage hints at a valuable role as the regular season draws near.

If he continues to make plays like this, Jackson may well secure a spot on the active roster and become a player to watch once the games truly begin in just a few weeks. And in the bigger picture further validates how well the team has put this team together with the young players currently on the roster.

Bucs sign two to their preseason roster

gettyimages-2167449832.jpg

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made two roster moves ahead of their second preseason game this week.

First, the team has signed former Falcons running back Jase McClellan, a 2024 sixth-round pick of Atlanta. McClellan’s addition to the roster provides depth at the running back position as the Bucs saw running back Rachaad White leave the game Saturday night due to a groin injury against the Titans.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 11, 2025

In another move, the Bucs have signed undrafted rookie cornerback JayVian Farr from Augustana University per Greg Auman of Fox News. Farr, who previously participated as a tryout player during rookie minicamp, impressed enough to be brought due to injuries injuries. With three cornerbacks sidelined, Farr will get the opportunity to showcase his skills in the remaining preseason games. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound corner earned first-team all-conference honors in his final season at Augustana, a Division II school in South Dakota. Farr, a native of Racine, Wisconsin, now has a chance to prove himself at the professional level.

Kyle Trask, Owen Wright among several Buccaneers with good showings

gettyimages-2228596788.jpg

In Friday night’s preseason opener at Raymond James Stadium, quarterback Kyle Trask steered the Buccaneers’ offense early in the absence of starters Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and others.

Trask finished his night 12-for-16 for 129 yards and connected with rookie standout Emeka Egbuka on a 21-yard gain — his first career reception and just missed him along the sideline for a potential touchdown on their opening drive, signaling promise in his NFL debut. Egbuka, the Bucs’ 2025 first-round pick, flashed dynamic route-running and good concentration on his lone catch.

Meanwhile, wideout Ryan Miller, fighting to secure a roster spot, helped the offense move the ball and keep drives alive. He recorded six catches for 66 yards before leaving the game with a potential concussion but was later cleared.

On the ground, Running back Rachaad White carried the ball six times for 28 yards but would leave and not return with a groin injury. Sean Tucker ran the ball 13 times for 50 yards and a touchdown, while Owen Wright ran the ball for 87 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Could have had one more but had two touchdowns wiped off the board due to penalties on one drive.

Defensively, the Bucs held the Titans to a total of 201 yards. They held first overall pick quarterback Cam Ward to 67 yards on five completions and on the night recorded three interceptions including a pick-6 by rookie Roman Parodie.

imagn-14767442.jpg

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back on the field tonight as they open their preseason at home against the Tennessee Titans.

Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka looks to be making his debut tonight among other new Bucs. Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard will also make his debut as the Tampa Bay play caller.

What are some things you’ll be looking for tonight? Sound off below!

Antoine Winfield, Jr. sidelined with ‘lower leg issue’

imagn-26753955.jpg

Tampa Bay Buccaneers All‑Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was absent from practice due to a lower‑leg issue, as revealed by head coach Todd Bowles Wednesday. Bowles did not elaborate on the severity of the injury or whether it would affect Winfield’s availability for upcoming preseason games.

However, if it is of any comfort, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that it doesn’t seem like it’ll be enough to keep Tampa Bay’s stud safety on the sidelines come the season opener.

Sounds like it's all eyes on Week 1 for Antoine Winfield. Doesn't sound like anything that'll keep him off the field for the opener. https://t.co/o7q89ufuoV

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 13, 2025

Winfield, entering his sixth NFL season, has been a cornerstone of the Bucs’ secondary. Despite a 2024 marred by a foot injury and recurrent knee troubles that limited him to just 9 regular‑season games, he remains a key figure in the team’s defensive plans. In June, Bowles praised Winfield’s conditioning and commitment during OTAs, calling his shape “great” and stressing his importance as Tampa Bay’s most reliable defender in 2025.

With the season on the horizon, any setback to Winfield’s preparation could be impactful. The Buccaneers will be watching closely as he undergoes evaluation—hoping this latest issue is minor and won’t interrupt his return to elite form this fall.

Report: Baker Mayfield will not play Saturday against the Steelers

gettyimages-2228583329.jpg

In a surprising move following Thursday’s joint practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that quarterback Baker Mayfield will not suit up for Saturday night’s preseason game.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times shared the news Thursday night.

After reviewing the tape of today’s practice, Todd Bowles just told me he believes Baker Mayfield played so well today in the joint workout with the Steelers he will NOT play in Saturday night’s game.

— Rick Stroud (@NFLSTROUD) August 15, 2025

Despite initially indicating that nearly all starters would play—aside from wide receiver Mike Evans and linebacker Lavonte David—Bowles reversed course after reviewing Mayfield’s practice performance. He described it was so impressive that there was essentially no point to play him in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Multiple reports painted a picture of Mayfield excelling against Pittsburgh’s defense, including a standout two-minute drill culminating in a touchdown connection with Mike Evans, even against cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Mayfield had already skipped the Buccaneers’ preseason opener versus the Titans. Despite the team being careful with him due to a contusion on his throwing hand last week it’s clear there is nothing wrong with Mayfield’s hand anymore.

This strategic decision underscores Bowles’ confidence in Mayfield’s readiness and health heading into the regular season—opting to preserve his quarterback’s momentum rather than risk unnecessary exposure.

Bucs’ Evans uncoverable in joint practice with Steelers

gettyimages-2226238724.jpg

With teams increasingly valuing joint practices and scrimmages with each passing season, any positive news is worth noting when reported from these outings.

That said, Mike Evans showcased his talents well for the Buccaneers as he reportedly destroyed the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerbacks during the two teams’ practice on Thursday. The Tampa Bay Times’s Rick Stroud attended, relaying the offense’s general dominance but specifically highlighting Evans, who enters his 12th campaign.

Bucs WR Mike Evans couldn’t be covered during practice Thursday and won most of his battles with Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey. Todd Bowles has seen enough and won’t play him Sat.

— Rick Stroud (@NFLSTROUD) August 14, 2025

His account was corroborated by team reporter Scott Smith, as well as multiple third-party sources like Pewter Report, Steelers Depot, and others. Evans concluded the day with a redzone score over Ramsey, and other starters Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan reportedly had very good days as well.

The Bucs WR trio of Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan and Emeka Egbuka looked dominant through much of today’s practice, and Evans remains one of the NFL’s most unstoppable weapons around the goal line.

— Scott Smith (@ScottSBucs) August 14, 2025

Todd Bowles quickly remarked after practice that Evans earned the night off when the two teams play live Saturday at 7 p.m., along with veterans Baker Mayfield and Lavonte David.

The news out of camp, paired with a strong display against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the preseason, all point to a Buccaneers offense that should be similarly daunting to the 2024 iteration — even with stalwarts Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin poised to start the season sidelined due to injury.

Evans will keep setting the tone for a young receiver room as he continues to cement his own legacy. He’s positioned to move even further up several records lists with multiple attainable marks — just 6 more touchdowns will make him 8th all time; another 1,000-yard tally will break the record currently co-held by Jerry Rice for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons; another 1,000+ yards would also put Evans just outside of the top 15 all-time in receiving yards; if he hits his average receptions mark of 85, that will put him shy of top 25 all-time.

If camp has been any indicator, Evans will be ready to continue his jaunt toward history when the season opens in roughly three weeks.
