Bucs activating WR Chris Godwin off PUP list, Tristan Wirfs to start season on active roster

Buccaneers fans woke up to some amazing news on Thursday morning as NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the team is activating wide receiver Chris Godwin and offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs off of the active/physically unable to perform list (PUP) ahead of this weekend’s preseason finale.

As it stands, Wirfs is expected to the field at some point in the first month of the year while Godwin is unfortunately still expected to be sidelined well into the season. Per Schefter, Godwin is unlikely to see game time until October. Head coach Todd Bowles did not close any sort of timeline for either player’s return, but he did note that he believes both need to “get in football shape,” per ESPN.

Sources: Buccaneers plan to activate WR Chris Godwin off the Physically Unable to Perform list and have him on their 53-man roster to start the season, but only to begin his ramp-up process for games, not to immediately play in them. The Bucs are unsurprisingly going to start the regular season short-handed, especially at wide receiver, due to Jalen McMillan’s recent neck which is likely to land him on injured reserve for a good portion of the season. But again, while things are seemingly looking dreary to begin the year, there’s still plenty to be optimistic about, even if the Bucs won’t be at full strength until the regular season is well underway.
