Happy Tuesday, folks!

The Bruins are back at home tonight, a place where they’ve been quite literally unbeatable of late.

The Kings are coming off of an OT win on Monday night, so logic says the Bruins should be the fresher, better rested team.

However, logic doesn’t mean much when you remember that we are on a ball of rock floating aimlessly through the cosmos.

As a note, this game will air on 98.5 The Sports Hub radio-wise tonight; the Celtics are playing tonight as well, but per the website, they’ll be broadcast on 105.7 until the B’s game ends.

Hey, it’s nice to not get bumped for once. Just wait until the Red Sox start: NESN+, baby.

Anyways, back to the task at hand.

Bruins! Kings! A hockey game!

Recap: McAvoy’s OT goal gives Bruins win over Kings

Charlie McAvoy giveth away, Charlie McAvoy scoreth…or something like that.

One game after some loose play with the puck cost the Bruins defenseman in OT in Pittsburgh, McAvoy scored the game-winner 39 seconds into overtime to give the Bruins a 2-1 win over the Kings.

The win extended the Bruins’ home winning streak to 13 games and helped them stay two points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who beat Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

Mason Lohrei scored the first goal for the Bruins, his seventh of the season. Jeremy Swayman made 14 saves in the win.

There was no scoring in this game until the third period, when Lohrei got on the board nine minutes into the period to make it 1-0 Bruins.

Drew Doughty would respond for the Kings with six minutes left in the third, making it a 1-1 game on a slapshot from way downtown.

McAvoy’s winner came less than a minute into the extra session, as Mark Kastelic and David Pastrnak combined to set him up for a mini-breakaway on Darcy Kuemper.

Bruins win, 2-1!

Game notes

  • McAvoy’s game-winner was extra sweet after he left the game in the second period with another facial/mouth injury. Per Bridgette Proulx, he broke his front teeth and lost more teeth on the bottom. In case you forgot, McAvoy already had pretty significant facial surgery this season after taking a puck to the face in the fall. At this point, he should probably just go full cage, full time. SAVE YOURSELF, CHARLIE.
  • While it probably wouldn’t be fair to call this game boring, it wasn’t exactly a high-event showdown. The teams combined for just 38 total shots on goal. Each team had a period with just three shots on goal. It’s not super surprising, with the Kings playing the night before and both teams in the middle of a condensed schedule.
  • All three goals in this game were scored by defensemen. I don’t know how often that happens, but it’s kind of cool.
  • While I know he’s a certified goal scorer, I’m not sure Artemi Panarin made the best decisions for LA in overtime. With the Kings controlling the puck, Panarin tried not once, but twice, to shoot through traffic at a decent distance. The Bruins ended up blocking both, and the puck went the other way for the game-winning goal. Possession is usually the name of the game in OT, so it was strange to see that approach.
  • Having said that, it’s also refreshing to see a guy just try to score instead of cycling the puck all the way back to the other end of the ice, so I guess I should actually be encouraging more risk-taking.
  • The Bruins had an on-ice send-off for Kings captain Anze Kopitar at the end of the game, as this will likely be the last time he plays at TD Garden. Kopitar plans to retire at season’s end. Marco Sturm spent five years as an assistant with the Kings, so he knows Kopitar well.

The Bruins will have an optional practice on Wednesday ahead of welcoming the San Jose Celebrinis to TD Garden on Thursday night.

Know your enemy

  • 30-26-6, 66PTS, 6th in the Pacific Division
  • Macklin Celebrini: 33G-57A-90PTS; Will Smith: 19G-26A-45PTS; Alexander Wennberg: 13G-28A-41PTS
  • Yaroslav Askarov: 19-17-3, 3.56 GAA, .886 save percentage

Game notes

  • The Bruins welcome the San Jose Sharks to the friendly confines of TD Garden, where the B’s will be looking for the 14th home win in a row.
  • While the Sharks are 6th in their division, they remain very much in the hunt for a wild card spot in the Western Conference. They’re just a point behind Seattle, who currently occupy the second wild card position, with a game in hand.
  • The reason they’re still in the race essentially boils down to one man (kid?): Macklin Celebrini, who has been on fire in his second NHL season. Celebrini, who won’t turn 20 until June, has factored in nearly 50% of San Jose’s goals this season while averaging more than 21 minutes of ice time per game. He won’t win, but should at least be in the Hart Trophy conversation this summer.
  • The Sharks have also gotten good production out of second-year-pro Will Smith, who has equaled his points total from his rookie year in 25 fewer games.
  • This visit is part of an Eastern swing for San Jose, who kicked off their road trip with a 6-3 loss in Buffalo on Tuesday. After tonight’s game, they’ll visit Montreal and Ottawa before heading back out west.
  • Team defense and goaltending have been issues for San Jose this season, with the Sharks allowing the sixth-most goals in the league (217, or 3.5 per game).
  • The Bruins had an optional skate yesterday, but there was no indication that Charlie McAvoy’s status for this game is in doubt. McAvoy had to undergo more dental work after Tuesday’s game, and will hopefully (for his own sake) be wearing a cage or bubble tonight.
  • Viktor Arvidsson has a 2G-4A-6PTS totals in his last four games. Somewhat quietly, he has already out-produced his last season in Edmonton, when he had 27 points in 67 games. He has 36 points in 52 games this season.

See ya tonight!

Welcome to another night of Bruins hockey, folks!

We have a California crew in town once again tonight, as the Los Angeles Kings headed out and the San Jose Sharks moved in.

Every game is a big game if you believe in yourself, but for the Sharks, points are at a premium as they cling to playoff hopes.

While the Bruins aren’t exactly super secure in a playoff spot at the moment, San Jose is outside of the picture for now and has lost three games in a row — though two of those losses have come beyond regulation.

These young Sharks are an entertaining team to watch, so we probably shouldn’t expect another round of three-shot periods like we saw on Tuesday night.

Bruins! Sharks! On planet Earth!

You can’t win ‘em all, right?

The Bruins gave the idea of never losing at home again a pretty good effort, but they fell to the Sharks at TD Garden last night for their first home loss since December.

The Sharks jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Bruins attempted to make a game of it, but the night ended with a 4-2 win for San Jose.

A two-goal deficit makes the game seem a little closer than it was, as that second goal came with less than a minute left in the third period.

Alex Nedeljkovic was the story in this one, making 39 saves for San Jose. For a while, it looked like he wouldn’t be beaten on the night, only to get surprised by a Fraser Minten five-hole shot midway through the third.

David Pastrnak scored the other Bruins goal, while Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves in the loss.

Last night’s game was the first I attended in the stands for about five years, so I’ll take the blame for the loss.

The Sharks had a strangely high number of fans in attendance last night, especially for a random mid-week game, but at least their trip was worth it.

If you missed the game, you can check out the full highlights below. They’re worth seeing just for William Eklund’s highlight-reel goal:

This game will go down as a missed opportunity for the B’s, as Detroit lost last night, meaning the Bruins would have leapfrogged them in the standings with a win.

Compounding matters: Columbus picked up a point in an OT loss to Florida, meaning they’re now just one point behind the Bruins.

Given the compacted nature of both the Eastern Conference standings and the schedule, the B’s could find themselves dropping from WC2 to three or four places out if they have a bad week.

On the other hand, they could also end up as high as second or third in the Atlantic with a good week, so maybe we should look on the bright side!

The B’s will be back in action in another “big game” on Saturday afternoon, facing the Capitals in DC.

Tonight, we’re officially on HagensWatch, as Boston College will play Maine in the Hockey East tournament.

BC is out with a loss, which would increase the likelihood of Hagens going pro. Stay tuned!

What else is on tap for today?
