RECAP: Bruins gut out a fantastic 5-3 WIN!

gettyimages-2244903744.jpg

Nothing quite like a good momentum builder against your modern rival, amirite?

First Period

Things didn’t start off great, as the Leafs got on the power play fairly early, and while they may not be very well constructed, they do still have a Nick Robertson, something I am told is actually quite good to have.

Anyway, he bounced the puck in on the backdoor step. 1-0 Leafs.

View Link

However, that seemed to be just the signal for the Bruins to set their heads on straight and promptly turned straight up ice. That found them in a pretty unusual position in that they found oodles and oodles of ice in front of Toronto’s netminder, and Morgan Geekie decided that he should continue his Rocket Richard campaign with a shot that he got the rarest of things on; a second chance.

View Link

Seriously, he somehow got that shot off after whiffing on the first try with at least two Leafs in poke check distance. Wild stuff. 1-1 Everybody.

Then, Victor Arvidsson decided to pick Myers’ pocket, and wouldn’t you know it; Myers had made the absolutely bizarre decision to take his possession directly across the goal mouth. 2-1 Bruins!

View Link

But, of course, the Leafs couldn’t leave well enough alone, and as a late power play died, Matias Maccelli got the easiest shot he’s ever gonna take, as no one marked him as he made his way to the net. 2-2 Everybody.

View Link

No further scoring, and we head to the middle frame.

Second Period

It was at this point that Boston got the go-ahead to just stunt on the Leafs.

They got things started with a chance that I thought for sure just ended up underneath Stolarz, but upon further video review, they determined was in fact a goal as Stolarz may have guided it into the net himself.

I…will take it! 3-2 Bruins!

View Link

Then, David Pastrnak put Simon Benoit, John Tavares, and Anthony Stolarz into the torment nexus!

View Link

The description of this maneuver from the B’s on the NHL’s page is “Masterful”, and I think that’s the best possible descriptor for it.

Unfortunately, the Leafs couldn’t let Boston have all the fun, and as such a power play opportunity gave Toronto another chance to get directly on top of Swayman, and John Tavares potted him a missile from the tail end of the royal road to cut the lead. 4-3 Bruins.

View Link

Goddamn Amulets giving him hypnosis or whatever.

Anyway, onto the final frame of regulation.

Third Period

So hey, we got two former Leafs on this B’s squad, and so far neither of them have factored into the game. Might as well see if there’s a chance for these guys to get one, right?

Say Fraser, how do you feel about giving it a shot? Mark Kastelic can do a good portion of the heavy lifting if you just throw it in the zone!

View Link

Great stuff. Thank you for playing, and congratulations on your 6th goal as an NHLer! You might make a habit out of this one day!

Anyway, Boston held strong, the Leafs couldn’t capitalize on a late power play…

and the Bruins Win 5-3!

Game Notes:

  • Your TOI Leader was Andrew Peeke (!!), who logged 23:13 tonight.
  • Something about playing the Maple Leafs seems to bring out the best in the Boston Bruins, even if they were down a Charlie McAvoy.
  • That said I’m gonna need that penalty kill to be a point of pain for practice. It got better over the course of the game but that early kill was gross out front.
  • Nikita Zadorov kiiiiinda got a borderline hit in on Scott Laughton, and then promptly got a free fight win after Bobby McMann decided to go ahead and defend the honor of this apparently load-bearing 4th liner the Leafs can’t keep totally healthy. Valiant effort, but there’s all sorts of valiant efforts in fights; You only get credit for going the distance or winning.
  • Hey, Mason Lohrei? Good night for you. Genuinely great night for you. This is the kind of thing you should be doing if you wanna be a mainstay in the Bruins lineup. Watch what you did here tonight for reference material. Two assists on top of it all was just gravy.
  • Regarding Michael Eyssimont’s goal tonight…I dunno if that really counted as a goal, but I will take it. Frankly I’m amazed we didn’t have the shot from inside the goal itself right behind Stolarz to confirm it shown on the broadcast. That’s just gonna let Toronto fans continue to believe their team is uniquely cursed and hated by the league.
  • Pasta with a highlight reel goal for 399, absolutely carving two of the Leafs finer qualities if you take them in isolate. This naturally means 400 is gonna be some rebound pop-in or a deflection that garners no real fanfare.
  • Toronto and letting former Leafs score on them. A tradition like no other…Alex Steeves never got his though, so we’re gonna have to run him back on the 11th. Keep your skates sharp, buddy!
  • Y’know if you took out the Man-disadvantage goals, Jeremy Swayman actually played a really goddamn solid game. All the goals he let up were pretty understandable given the circumstances, and critically, which has been his strength throughout his career, he tightened his game up considerably after a goal or two went in, which gave the Bruins a major advantage. Maybe a .909 SV% is disappointing, but I choose to believe he kept them in this where it counted.
    • Critically, and I feel like this bears noting: Y’wanna know what Jeremy Swayman never did over last year and into this year? One thing that he specifically has chosen to avoid doing in order to draw lots of attention to his play? Call his teammates out for playing like ass in the middle of him playing some of his worst hockey. Anthony Stolarz on the other hand? He’s almost a week out from that and has put up an .883 through alla that. That’s at least responsibility being taken.
  • My last bit of slander for the night: I’m just so happy that Leafs management all went in on big and tall defenders who do no zone exits last offseason and last trade deadline. Even better, the Leafs fanbase all saw these big ol’ giraffes who hate zone exits and decided that they were actually good now. I will relish the ability to get Fraser Minten’s out of this team for as long as their collective puck knowledge remains directly in hell. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, makes me happier than a team spending more money than god on things that don’t matter and being surprised at the results because they didn’t read any fine print. They truly asked for this, and are horrified that they’re getting exactly what they asked for.
  • I had to watch the CBC feed tonight, and towards the end of the game they had some real classic broadcast issues in the 3rd. Feed went to a test pattern a couple of times, audio dropped entirely multiple times, it was rough. It was also quick, which is a testament to the nameless techs and grips hard work, but still weird to have that kinda thing happen on a 2025 sports broadcast.
  • 6 straight, and now they’re 2nd in the Division. If this keeps up we’re gonna have to start thinking pretty seriously about their best playoff matchups. Wouldn’t that be fun in year 1 of Marco Sturm?

Man if you liked this game in Toronto, you’re gonna love this when they play it again in Boston. The B’s play next against the same foe on 11/11. That game starts at 7pm EST.

We’ll see you there!

Morning Skate: Ongoing

gettyimages-2245760011.jpg

Welcome to a new week, folks!

While whatever hit Mark Kastelic put on Max Domi Saturday night to generate the reaction above wasn’t the most impactful part of the game, it certainly produced quite an image.

Add some oil paints and a background and this could be some kind of Renaissance painting.

Okay, that’s enough art history for today.

It was a good weekend for the Bruins, who defeated the Leafs in Toronto by a score of 5-3.

In case you already had a hankering for more servings of Maple Leaf, I have good news for you: the Bruins will host those very same Leafs tomorrow night at TD Garden!

As everyone knows, you can never have too much Toronto.

With Saturday’s win, the Bruins extended their winning streak to six games. That mark leaves them tied with the Anaheim Ducks for the longest active streak in the league.

Winning streaks in November aren’t going to guarantee any long-term success, but given how grim things were looking prior to this run, it’s been a pretty remarkable stretch of games.

Yes, it’s probably still silly to dream of a deep spring run for this team, but if nothing else, the winning streak has illustrated that this group has some scrappiness to it.

Elsewhere around the league, the Cone of Shame hangs firmly around the neck of the Edmonton Oilers, who got obliterated by Colorado by a 9-1 score on Saturday night — and on home ice, no less.

Lastly, tonight’s the night for Zdeno Chara, former Bruin Joe Thornton, and several others, as they’ll officially be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in a ceremony this evening.

The Bruins have been doing a great job sharing Chara memories, anecdotes, etc. on their social media feeds, so check those out if you missed them.

I had just graduated from high school when the B’s signed Chara way back when. I’m old.

Anyways, on that uplifting note, what’s on tap for today?

Game notes

  • Can they make it seven? It felt like just yesterday I was writing that the Bruins were looking to stave off a six-game losing streak and now here we are, looking to extend a winning streak tonight to seven games as the Toronto Maple Leafs are in town.
  • The Bruins fared well against the Maple Leafs a few days ago to push their winning streak to six with a 5-3 win over them on the road. In that game, the Bruins got production from five different goal-scorers, and nine players registering at least one point.
  • Morgan Geekie continues to be hot, coming off a two-point game. Geekie has points in nine out of his last 10 games — and five points in his last five. He’s still near the top of the leader board with 11 goals.
  • I will manifest it until it happens — David Pastrnak is now one goal away from 400 career goals.
  • Head Coach Marco Sturm said Casey Mittlestadt is week-to-week after being sidelined with a lower-body injury in last Thursday’s game against the Ottawa Senators. Alex Steeves has slotted in to the forward’s group dealing with a few injuries right now. Sturm said he played how he felt he would when being called up, bringing energy. Steeves had 13:22 minutes on ice with one shot.
  • The Bruins now have the same goals for/goals against average at 3.29. The Leafs are second to last in goals against with a 3.75 goals against average.
  • Head-to-head, the Bruins and Maple Leafs’ PK are pretty similar — Bruins at 81.3% effective to 80.9% for the Leafs. On the power play, Bruins have the edge at 22.2% to Toronto’s 17.1%.
  • Toronto enters the game on a two-game losing streak as they fell, 5-4, to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday following their Saturday loss to the Bruins.
  • For Toronto, Nylander has eight points in his last five games, with five goals and three assists. Morgan Reilly has seven assists in that time.
  • See ya tonight!

Recap: Bruins power up in 5-3 win over Maple Leafs

gettyimages-2246264567.jpg

The Boston Bruins scored three power-play goals to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3, for the second time in two games by the same score to extend their win streak to seven games at the TD Garden Tuesday night.

David Pastrnak had a two-goal game to hit 400 career goals while Alex Steeves netted his first as a Bruin.

The Bruins outplayed the Leafs for most of the game, retaining a cushion lead through two periods. Despite Toronto battling back from being down by three, Pastrnak’s second of the night — the Bruins three power-play tally of the game — secured the win.

With the win, the Bruins are now tied for first in the Atlantic Division.

Here are the highlights!

First period:

The first period saw three goals scored on three Bruins’ power plays, but only two in favor of the Black and Gold.

On an early power play, Pavel Zacha redirected David Pastrnak’s shot off his skate and past Anthony Stolarz to give the Bruins the lead. 1-0 Bruins.

View Link

But on their next man advantage, steven Lorentz forced a turnover as Charlie McAvoy couldn’t get the puck out of the defensive zone and ended up sending a wrist shot over Jeremy Swayman’s block for a shorthanded goal. 1-1 game.

View Link

The Bruins capitalized on another power play. Mason Lohrei slid a pass to Hampus Lindholm who, with screens out front, beat Stolarz glove side. 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

Alex Steeves then got his first goal as a Bruin on a play he created. Steeves battled for the puck along the end boards. Lindholm sent a pass to Steeves for him to put a five-hole shot past Stolarz. 3-1 Bruins.

View Link

Second period:

David Pastrnak netted career goal No. 400 just 49 seconds the second period to further cushion the Bruins lead. Morgan Geekie forwarded a pass to Pastrnak who in close, dragged the puck on his forehand to backhand then back to forehand for a low goal past Dennis Hildeby skate. 4-1 Bruins.

View Link

Toronto cut into their deficit with their own power-play goal to end the period after losing Austin Matthews. Bobby McMann threw a backhander past Swayman to make it a two-goal game. 4-2 game.

View Link

Third period:

Along the boards, Nick Robertson got the puck to Oliver Ekman-Larsson who threw a long snap shot at net that traveled past Swayman’s blocker. 4-3 game.

View Link

Mark Kastelic found Pastrnak low in the left-wing circle where he collected the puck from his skates for a wrist shot under the crossbar. Final score: 5-3 Bruins.

View Link

Game notes

  • Well, it finally happened! Pastrnak hit No. 400 AND No. 401 AND nearly added an empty netter. It was nice seeing the team’s reaction to clear the bench and congratulate him on the milestone. He is now only one of six Bruins to hit that number.
  • And Morgan Geekie continues just to be a force, springing Pastrnak on No. 400.
  • It was another big win for the Bruins, and a dominant performance over the Leafs for most of the 60 minutes. The Leafs did outshoot the Bruins in the second and third, but Swayman made some important saves, including a helmet-losing blast.
  • The B’s power play continues to be a huge asset for them, going 3 for 6 tonight.
  • Matthews didn’t return for Toronto after leaving the second-period with what Toronto announced as a lower-body injury. The Maple Leafs went after Nikita Zadorov in the third because of it and things got chippy, obviously. Notably Max Domi took an awful roughing penalty for his team as Zadorov kept his gloves on and the Bruins came out of it with the advantage.
  • Stolarz also left the game with an upper-body injury after the first.
  • These two teams won’t see each other again until the end of March after meeting twice in a few days.
  • The Bruins will hit the road to face the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. Thursday.

  • Linus Ullmark: 6-4-4, 3.21 GAA, .870 save percentage

Game notes

  • Hang in there, folks. After tonight, we won’t have to see a team from Ontario again for a very, very long time — like a month.
  • The Senators lost last time out, falling to Dallas in OT on Tuesday. However, they’re 6-1-3 in their last ten games and are currently in the midst of a six-game point streak and have earned at least a point in nine of their last ten games.
  • I kind of already made this point with the “at least a point” part above, but it feels worth pointing out that five of Ottawa’s last six games have gone beyond regulation. Bonus hockey isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and the Sens are making sure their fans get their money’s worth.
  • Last time the Bruins played in Ottawa, they turned in their worst performance of the season, losing 7-2. Imagine being told back then that between that loss and the B’s next visit to Ottawa tonight they wouldn’t lose a game? You’d probably have found yourself fit for a nice, cozy, tightly tied new jacket.
  • Former Bruin Linus Ullmark has had an up-and-down start to the season for Ottawa, leading to some questions about goaltending at GM Steve Staios’s recent press conference. Staios reiterated is faith in Ullmark.
  • The B’s got some solid value out of their power play against Toronto on Tuesday night. If they can draw a few penalties tonight, they may be in luck, as Ottawa has the league’s second-worst penalty kill.
  • Sens forward Michael Amadio, who scored in the last match-up between these two teams, had a nice run of four straight games with a goal snapped in Tuesday’s loss. With six goals in 17 games, he’s nearly halfway to his career high of 16 (recorded in 67 games).
  • Charlie McAvoy is on a nice run of late for the B’s, with six assists in his last four games. McAvoy hasn’t scored yet this season, giving him a weird-looking stat line of 0G-16A-16PTS in 17 games.
  • If David Pastrnak scores a goal tonight, I hope the entire Bruins team comes off the bench to celebrate again, just to make people mad.

See ya tonight!

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Senators

gettyimages-2245001726.jpg

Thursday Night Hockey, folks!

If channel surfing if your thing, you’ve got the Bruins and Senators at 7 PM and the Patriots vs. the Jets at 8:15 PM. A nice sports night if you’re a New Englander.

Of course, it’s not really channel surfing anymore. Instead, it’s fumbling between two streaming services that you pay for separately, because cutting the cord is much more cost effective, even if it’s significantly less convenient.

Anyways, that’s enough out of me.

Bruins! Senators! LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Discuss.

Morning Skate: End

gettyimages-2246025108.jpg

Well folks, as the Ottawa Board of Tourism’s slogan goes, “Ottawa: Where All Good Things Come to an End.”

I think I’m making that up, but maybe not.

The Bruins’ trouble in Kanata continued last night, with their winning streak ending via a 5-3 loss to the Senators.

True to form for nearly all of this season, the B’s hung in there, made it interesting, etc., but this time, they fell short thanks to a goal from Tim Stützle late in the third period.

He’d add an empty-netter too, cementing the two-goal win.

While the streak was going to end eventually, the Bruins felt like they let this game get away from them, a point that’s kind of hard to argue.

Morgan Geekie, David Pastrnak, and Mark Kastelic were the goalscorers for the Bruins, while Joonas Korpisalo made 17 saves in defeat.

The bad news: The Bruins lost. The good news: No more games against Ontario teams! Surely we have a more palatable opponent on the horizon…

…or not!

The Bruins will remain on the road and make the relatively short jaunt from Ottawa over to Montreal, where the first-place Canadiens await.

While Bruins-Canadiens games have lacked juice over the past few years, a Saturday night game between two teams tied (in points) for first place could help kickstart things.

Yes, it’s only mid-November, but it’s still a good measuring stick game, bragging rights game, whatever you want to call it. A Saturday night game at the Bell Centre is usually quite a scene.

The B’s will return home after Saturday night’s game and welcome the Carolina Hurricanes back to TD Garden on Monday night, just over two weeks after the Hurricanes last visited.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the B’s have played a weirdly segmented schedule thus far this season. I’m probably just looking for something to complain about.

Anyways, hope you have a good Friday!

What’s on tap for today?

Game Preview

The Habs and the Bruins. In what should be playoff position in the middle of November. Meaning at least these two teams could be considered Atlantic Division Good.

What Atlantic Division Good means for the rest of the league…don’t worry too much about it.

The Habs are a genuine joy to watch if you have no rooting interest against them. Cole Caufield is an electric, almost league leading goalscorer, Nick Suzuki has truly come into his niche as a 200-foot center, Juraj Slafkovsky is becoming an overwhelming force of possession, Ivan Demidov has the makings of a genuine superstar, and on the back end, they have Lane Hutson, who seems to be the best thing Holland, Michigan ever produced; he’s fast, his maneuvability on-ice is leagues beyond where a lot of players are, and he’s already a major focus of their power play. They’ve successfully gotten themselves off the mat possession-wise though are still in the bottom third of the league, and are about league average when it comes to generating quality shots.

And yet…with all those good things, the Habs are probably the most interesting squad in the Eastern Conference right now because they are so overwhelmingly flawed as well. They’re doing well, sure, but they’re doing it in spite of a lot of lingering issues. First of which being injury; they’re without Kaiden Guhle and Alex Newhook for the forseeable future, and Patrik Laine is out until what is increasingly looking like 2026. Guhle and Laine I could personally take or leave, but Newhook’s season was genuinely going really well; 12 points in 17 games, and a major shot in the arm for their offense. Without him, a lot of the other parts don’t quite fall into place. Montreal’s center depth still remains quite shallow and it’s only becoming more pronounced with each game.

Further, goaltending in Montreal, once a historical strength, has fallen on leaner times. In fairness, whatever qualities that Dobes and Montembeault happen to have, they are not getting a helluva lot of help out in front of themselves, but a painful reality persists that while both have had some games to remember, a vast majority have been on them to play well…and they do not respond well to that.

Of course, we of all fanbases should know what that’s like; given that Swayman and Korpisalo’s performances this year have been nearly identical to Dobes and Montembeault in terms of SV% and almost in terms of record.

Of course, that’s the usual, on-paper stuff. What almost always defines Bruins-Habs is that a true rivalry forces both sides to begin digging down to each other’s level and then right past that to force them to dig even deeper. I have held that playing the Habs just kind of does something to the Bruins; their reasoning skills atrophy, their decision-making suffers, the refs become irritated with them, and the only real saving grace is that the exact same happens to the team in Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge. In recent years the Habs have been too ineffectual across the board to make any of that look anything more than embarrassing, but this year?

This year could be the return of this rivalry that fans have missed. The fires of hate being reignited.

Tonight, we find out if we’re cooking with gas.

RECAP: Bruins hang on to beat Habs 3-2!

imagn-27600986.jpg

How’s that for a statement win?

1st Period

The game started with a perfectly reasonable series of plays, both showcasing the skill of the competitors and the-I’m just f#!king with you it started with Jayden Struble and Nikita Zadorov chuckin’ fists as the game started.

Pretty good little bout!

In fact, it was so good they had another one!

Anyway, the scoring started at 4-on-4, as the Bruins used the extra ice from a mutual roughing call to set up an extremely pretty passing play that ended with Marat Khusnutdinov putting a beautiful shot past Sam Montembeault! 1-0 Bruins!

View Link

Buuuut then the B’s near endless parade to the power play finally found a hitch; namely in Viktor Arvidsson bobbling a clear scoring chance and allowing Jake Evans to spring out for a short handed chance…

View Link

…which became a short-handed goal. Really can’t get too cute with those Habs, man. 1-1 Everybody.

What else happened in this period? Penalties. Some for slashing, a lot for roughing, one for holding the stick, you name it, the first period probably had it.

Finally, we come to the end of the initial frame, and the 2nd dawns.

2nd Period

I hope you were ready for more penalties, because the B’s and Habs sure were!

But before they got back into using the NHL Rulebook as a tissue, Mason Lohrei took a decent shot at Montembeault, and in the middle of Judd Sirott explaining that Montembeault doesn’t have great numbers against Boston, he got a fantastic example of why as he completely misjudged the shot which may have been deflected in, or simply became a sinker. 2-1 Bruins!

View Link

Then the penalties started back up again, which benefited Boston as their power play once again got the chance to redeem Viktor Arvidsson for his part in the Canadiens’ goal against. They didn’t squander it whatsoever, and this time Arvidsson was more than ready to score his 200th NHL Goal. 3-1 Bruins!

View Link

Happy 200, Arvy!

Of course, that couldn’t be the end of it all, as the Habs still have a goalscoring hobbit who is behind on his goalscoring after that Dallas game. Struble and Suzuki stretched out the ice for Cole Caufield, who should never be left unsupervised by anybody unless you’d like to be down a goal. 3-2 Bruins

View Link

No further scoring, and we head to the third.

3rd Period

It might shock you to learn, but the conga line to the box did not stop in the final frame.

The goalscoring did, though! Both sides failed to change the score any further, and the Bruins walked away from this game with a 3-2 Victory!

Game Notes

  • Your TOI Leader was Hampus Lindholm, who logged 27:19 last night!
  • This had everything you could ever want from an entertainment factor; goals, fights, shaky penalties, multiple dramatic penalty kills, weird scorin’, both goalies looking foolish and incredible…it was a fantastic hockey game all around. I’m sure people have said this, but it really is better for the league when Boston and Montreal are good at the same time. I just like it when Boston’s that little bit better.
  • Speaking of penalties, let’s all stand and give a big round of applause to the Bruins penalty kill, who was a hard working unit all night and got plenty of opportunity to show it; killing all man advantages that the Habs were given, which included a number of 5-on-3 chances. Great stuff all around.
  • Happy 200th goal there, Arvy! A great little sequence for him to achieve that milestone; and especially solid given that he was basically the trigger man for Pasta and Zacha, who were making sure he had pleeeenty of room.
  • Another pretty okay Mason Lohrei game! Goal-For, wasn’t the direct reason they gave up any goals…That’s what we’re shooting for here with him.
  • On a less positive note, the Bruins lost Charlie McAvoy fairly early into the second period after taking a slapshot to the face, which for starters…ow, and second, is not going to bode well if he’s out for any length of time. They got Carolina and the California road trip upcoming in the same week. We sincerely hope he’s doing okay and recovers quickly.
  • Jeremy Swayman once again showed why betting on him is usually worth it; he was under less than optimal conditions for most of this game and came away with a .929 SV% on 28 shots. The Swayman “thing” of at least one or two goals against is still present, but it’s second part, where goal three becomes a herculean feat to try and obtain, is still alive and well. If the B’s can keep working that, then they can hopefully get his season SV% back up from hell where it was after the Ottawa game. No idea if it’ll do any rehab on his perception among fans, but hey; baby steps!
  • Don’t wanna Jinx anything but David Pastrnak’s tied for 4th in the league in points. Was a big part of the power play being a torment nexus for the Habs. Might be a good player.

The B’s come back home on Monday, where they will be facing the other really good team in the Eastern Conference…the Carolina Hurricanes.

It’s gonna be a helluva test, so we hope to see you there!

  • Finally free from the unfriendly confines of Canada, the Bruins are back at home tonight to face the Carolina Hurricanes for the second time in around two weeks. The Bruins won that November 1 game, also at TD Garden, by a score of 2-1.
  • The Hurricanes lost their last game, a 4-3 overtime decision against Edmonton in Raleigh on Saturday.
  • Many people (and by that, I mean none) are calling this the Brandon Bussi Revenge Game, as the former P-Bruin is now a member of the Hurricanes after being claimed off waivers in October. Yes, he was on the roster for that Nov. 1 game, but this one is the Revenge Game. Don’t get mad at me, I don’t make the rules.
  • The Hurricanes are 6-3-1 in their last ten, with a nice four-game winning streak sandwiched by some win-loss-win consistency.
  • This game will be a match-up of two pretty potent offenses, as the Hurricanes have the league’s second-best scoring offense (3.67 GF/G), while the Bruins somewhat surprisingly slot in at fifth best in the league (3.35 GF/G).
  • Charlie McAvoy traveled home with the Bruins on Saturday night, but his status for tonight’s game remains up in the air (as of Sunday night, at least). It was a pretty gnarly injury for McAvoy, and it doesn’t make a ton of sense to rush him back if he’s banged up.
  • The Bruins will likely be without Viktor Arvidsson tonight as well, with Marco Sturm saying the forward “will be out” after he left the Montreal game early.
  • David Pastrnak continues to be hot for the B’s, with 4G-4A-8PTS totals in his last five games.
  • I follow the NHL fairly closely, but I feel like Carolina has a lot of “wait, he plays for them?” guys. Nikolaj Ehlers, K’Andre Miller, Logan Stankoven, etc. You can add former Bruin Taylor Hall to that list, and he’s had a decent season thus far with 10 points (4G-6A) in 18 games.
  • Tonight will be the B’s last home game before American Thanksgiving, as they’ll head to California for the standard West Coast swing, followed by a stop on SCENIC LONG ISLAND. They’ll host the New York Rangers for a Black Friday Matinée.

See ya tonight!

Welcome to Monday Night Hockey, folks!

Hopefully your week got off to a decent start today, as the calendar turns ever closer to Thanksgiving (American).

The Bruins and Hurricanes will provide some entertainment for you this evening, as the B’s look to build on a solid showing in Montreal on Saturday night.

Bruins! Hurricanes! LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Fresh off of an entertaining, adrenaline-filled win in Montreal on Saturday night, the Bruins came home Monday night and…well, they played a hockey game.

It would be a little unfair to describe last night’s Bruins-Hurricanes game as “boring,” but it was a fairly businesslike 3-1 win for the visitors.

The Bruins weren’t terrible, but were sloppy enough to be staring down a 3-0 shutout loss prior to Riley Tufte’s consolation goal with 10 seconds left.

The B’s managed just 16 shots on goal through two periods and failed to generate much of anything on the man advantage (though Tufte’s goal technically came on the power play), while the Hurricanes played a generally solid all-around game and were deserving winners.

It’s hard to do too much complaining, as this was the Bruins’ first loss on TD Garden ice in nearly a month.

Their last home loss prior to tonight was to the Anaheim Ducks back on October 23. Weirdly enough, the B’s next game will be on the road against those same Ducks on Wednesday.

While Tufte scored, fellow Monday recall-ee (that’s not a word) Matej Blumel did OK in his Bruins debut, recording a single shot on goal in 13:10 of ice time.

Prior to tonight’s game, news emerged that Charlie McAvoy may end up needing surgery on his mouth, which isn’t the best news but isn’t exactly shocking given the nature of that injury.

With Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittelstadt already on injury reserve, plus Jordan Harris on long-term injured reserve, the B’s shorthanded problems are beginning to pile up.

Perfect time to…oh, head out on a California road trip!

I may be wrong, but this seems like an unusual California swing in that it doesn’t feature any back-to-back games: the Bruins will face the Ducks on Wednesday night, the Kings on Friday night, and the Sharks on Sunday night.

What’s on tap for today?

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Ducks

gettyimages-2242554084.jpg

I don’t want to overstep, but as someone who is now old, it’s very inconsiderate of these California teams to play hockey games so late.

I am going to write a strongly worded letter so they know how I feel (after I wake up from my nap).

With that grousing out of the way, it’s hockey night!

California swings are always a good test, even moreso this year with both Anaheim and Los Angeles playing good hockey to start the season.

The B’s, more depleted by the game, will be looking to bounce back from Monday’s flat showing against Carolina and avenge their defeat in the wild, 12-goal thriller last time these two teams played.

Bruins! Ducks! Past my bedtime!

RECAP: B’s can’t complete comeback against Anaheim

gettyimages-2247566833.jpg

Welp.

1st Period

Things started bad.

View Link

Things started very, very bad.

View Link

Starting the game down 2-0 after about 7 minutes of gametime is not how you want your night to go.

Thankfully, the Boston Bruins have a golden scoring force in Morgan Geekie, who said his Rocket Richard campaign is BACK ON!

View Link

After 20? The Bruins were down 2-1.

2nd Period

Honestly this was a much better period for most of it; the B’s started to outshoot the Ducks in earnest, they found plenty of offensive zone time…

…it’s a pity they gave the Ducks a power play.

View Link

Mercifully, the Bruins managed to get a herculean shift out of Michael Eyssimont, who showed exceptional patience in a 2-on-1 to score himself!

View Link

Just some great maneuvering by him.

The middle period ended with a 3-2 Ducks Lead.

3rd Period

Boston’s power play got to work early on in the final frame, with Morgan Geekie swooping into the net-front to deflect a David Pastrnak shot straight past Dostal! 3-3 Everybody!

View Link

But…these are not the Ducks who were useless like they had been for years. This team is very, very different. They can move the puck, they can force you to look the other way.

They can get Ian Moore to score one more.

View Link

aaaaand the Bruins lose 4-3.

Game Notes

  • Your TOI leader was Hampus Lindholm, who logged 22:01
  • I mean, it’d be hard to really pin this game down to anything but just about three things; the Ducks really have come into their own as a squad and have some real killer shooters, the Bruins only scored one goal at even strength tonight and the Ducks scored three, and well…Lukas Dostal is incredible. This was a textbook example of finding out that the future could be now, and it features a lot of eye-bleeding orange.
    • Seriously Ducks, you need to get some black pants and helmets. Even all that out.
  • It would probably hurt a lot less if most of those goals were coming from Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish, but nah; it’s guys like Jansen Harkins and Radko Gudas; all those big names played assist magnet tonight. Just frustrating.
  • So Morgan Geekie is tied for the league lead for goals with Leon Draisaitl and Nathan MacKinnon. Like we all suspected he would be, right?
  • Boston’s power play is really, really, really good, which feels like another world if you’re used to the defense-first B’s. It arguably saved their bacon from this game getting really ugly, and I think it’s a major component in the “Battle back” nature of the team. Nobody quits because any old penalty can be a chance at a comeback. 2-for-2 felt like a pipe dream some years ago. It’s a shame what had to happen to the roster to get there.
  • Marat Khusnutdinov has really found his niche as the “exit-entry” guy for his line. His north-south skating has made him an invaluable asset for the B’s transition game and even if his point totals right now look kinda “meh”, you can see him settling into this role so naturally it’s a wonder anyone played him doing anything else.
  • Radko Gudas did a borderline hit on Michael Eyssimont, and promptly had to defend his entire life against Jeffrey Viel for a couple of minutes. Maybe not the best instigator penalty to take, but under those circumstances I think it’s at least understandable.
  • Hey Mason? You’re doing it again. You can’t start doing it again. All these California teams are at the bare minimum competent. They’ll getcha for that. Every time.
  • Korpisalo was fine in the third period. He was however, deeply out of his depth against the Ducks, and it showed. His .879 SV% tonight would be a lot more rage inducing if he was getting any help from his skaters out front. He was big in moments they needed him to be…he was just letting in goals from places that are kind of difficult to forgive.
  • I reaaaaally would like it if we could get some points from this road trip, I really don’t want to go back to the days of bargaining for points on the Cali road trip.

The B’s continue the California road trip with a visit to the LA Kings, which is on Friday at 10:30pm EST.

We’ll see you there!

  • Lukas Dostal: 9-5-1, 2.80 GAA, .903 save percentage

Game notes

  • With dropping temperatures and whipping winds in the Boston area over the past few days, you could forgive the Bruins for being excited to board a plane and head to the Golden State. A four-game road trip, with three of those games against the NHL’s California trio, begins tonight in Anaheim.
  • The Ducks are one of the league’s pleasant surprises thus far on the season, sitting atop the Pacific Division (as of Tuesday afternoon). While they weren’t quite as hopeless as the San Jose Sharks last season, the Ducks finished 6th in their division, some 20 points outside of the playoff picture. To be in 1st approaching American Thanksgiving is an achievement.
  • These two teams already played once this season, and it was a doozy: the Ducks beat the B’s at TD Garden back on October 23 by a score of 7-5.
  • These two teams are also among the league’s streaking leaders this season, with each side boasting a recent seven-game winning streak. The Ducks had lost three in a row after their streak ended, but bounced back with an OT win over Utah last time out.
  • By now, you’re well aware of the state of the Bruins, who are getting increasingly banged up by the day. Charlie McAvoy isn’t on the trip, while Viktor Arvidsson, Casey Mittelstadt, and Jordan Harris remain out. Elias Lindholm will travel with the team, but it remains to be seen if he’s in game shape.
  • As we saw back in the game at TD Garden, this Ducks team has some serious scoring punch: they’re second in the league in GF/G at 3.63.
  • After piling up the goals over the past few seasons, former Bruin Frank Vatrano has had a slow start to this season for the Ducks. He has just 2 goals and a single assist in 19 games.
  • Longtime Ranger Chris Kreider (another good ol’ Massachusetts boy) has enjoyed life on the West Coast thus far, with 10 goals and 4 assists in 15 games.
  • In case you missed it, the B’s recalled defenseman Michael Callahan on Tuesday afternoon.

See ya tonight!

  • Darcy Kuemper: 7-4-3, 2.42 GAA, .904 save percentage

Game notes

  • West Coast living continues for the Bruins, as they face the Kings in Los Angeles tonight after starting their road trip with a loss on Anaheim on Wednesday.
  • The Kings were in action on Thursday night, falling to the San Jose Sharks in OT. That loss was LA’s second in a row, a mini-run preceded by a four-game winning streak.
  • Anton Forsberg started that game last night for the Kings, meaning the B’s will likely see Darcy Kuemper tonight.
  • Corey Perry, now firmly in his journeyman era after starting his career with more than a decade in Anaheim, has gotten off to a good start in Los Angeles, with seven goals in 15 games. He recorded 19 over a full season in Edmonton last year.
  • The Kings have been a relatively stingy team defensively this season, allowing the seventh-fewest goals per game in the league at 2.71.
  • For the Bruins, they managed to escape the Anaheim game with no new concerns (a miracle!), so expect to see a pretty similar group on the ice tonight.

See ya much, much later tonight!

Hopefully your work week is in the rearview mirror and you have some good stuff coming up this weekend. If not, well…maybe the Bruins can be a bright spot.

Or maybe not! Time will tell. The magic of live sports.

Anyways, it’s the Bruins vs. the Kings tonight at the ungodly hour of 10:30 PM Eastern.
