Browns 53-man roster: These 3 longshot players are sleepers to make the initial roster

Browns roster does not have a lot of space available especially with the 4-man QB competition

With training camp starting soon for the Cleveland Browns, the roster, as it stands, will eventually be trimmed down to 53, as it currently sits at 90. Everyone pretty much has the idea of who the roster locks are, who is on the bubble, and who are the longshots to make the team. Longshots are players who usually face an uphill battle to make the team and will have the entirety of the preseason to prove they are worthy of a roster spot.

These three longshot players are the sleepers to make the 53-man roster:

TE Sal Cannella

As someone who watches spring football more than the casual fan, the one name that I am familiar with the most is Cannella, who started his football career going back to defunct The Spring League. Cannella has been around multiple leagues. Take a look at these stops:

Cannella recently signed with the Browns after another successful stint in the UFL with the Arlington Renegades. Cannella led the league in touchdown receptions and was a reliable target for Renegades QB Luis Perez.

Too tuff.

Sal Cannella leaves it all on the field for a 1st down.

From first downs to fit checks, Sal is the best in the game.

— Arlington Renegades (@XFLRenegades) June 4, 2025

Cannella has yet to appear in a regular-season game when he was signed with previous NFL teams, but considering how the Browns cut tight end Tre McKitty to pick him up, there is a chance Cannella will make the 53-man roster.

Cannella has shown he can produce, and he’s shown he can be a reliable target in the redzone in other leagues. He’ll get a fair chance to earn the third tight end roster spot and show he can be someone who can be called upon.

DT Ralph Holley

I started watching the Canadian Football League more closely, going back to 2022, mainly because there are players who used to play in the NFL and players who are there who could potentially play in the NFL if given the opportunity.

Enter Holley, who was a part of one of the best defensive lines in the CFL last season with Grey Cup Champions Toronto Argonauts. Despite missing a couple of games, Holley was tied for 1st in sack total alongside former teammate Jake Ceresna.

Holley has shown multiple times he can be an impact player and he was one of the more underrated players on the Argos defensive line.

The Browns interior defensive lineman room is somewhat deep but Holley is a sleeper for making the team.

WR Luke Floriea

For people who live in Northeast Ohio and watch high school football frequently, rookie Floriea is a familiar name. Floriea was a 3-star prospect coming out of Mentor High School and attended Kent State University (an hour drive from Mentor, Ohio) after he originally committed to Boston College.

— MACtion (@MACSports) August 31, 2024

(Editor’s Note: Floriea has a head start on being the lesser-known receiver that Browns fans “know” will be good if the team moves on from him.)

Judging from rookie minicamp and minicamp clips, Floriea has shown the capabilities of earning a shot to make the 53-man roster after he signed with the team after rookie minicamp. Floriea could be a reliable slot option (not as the starter but as a backup) on a team that seems not to have many slot guys and could potentially make his mark on special teams. If it’s someone who could make the team, it’s Floriea.

The Browns receiver that more people should be talking about

Training camp is fast approaching and the Browns roster has some intriguing players

The Cleveland Browns will begin training camp this year away from the fancy confines of West Virginia, and instead, not have to box everything up and relocate away from Berea.

RELATED: TRAINING CAMP SCHEDULE

There will be several battles that every Browns fan will be looking at on a weekly basis.

To start off with, the quarterback situation. In fact, the entire league is watching the Browns for this group to thin out and declare a winner. The reason, obviously, is rookie Shedeur Sanders, who fell from the Top-5 to another five, namely the fifth round.

Because Cleveland has declared they are going back to running the ball, who will be the starting running back? Jerome Ford is the favorite, or, on the veteran side, don’t count out the services of Pierre Strong, plus GM Andrew Berry drafted not one, but two backs in this year’s draft. No clear winner yet.

Defensive tackle and safety were both groups of concern after last year. Will kicker Dustin Hopkins regroup and continue a strong campaign, or will former Groza Award winner Andre Szmyt beat him out?

Then there is the receiver group. In meetings, this room has had to round up some extra chairs because currently, there are 13 pass catchers on the roster. No, not a misprint. Every so many weeks, another one arrives with his duffle bag and backpack, anxious to show that he should be one of the six players the Browns will keep.

Yeah, six receivers. That’s it, most likely.

Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, and probably Jamari Thrash are a certainty. That leaves three spots. Diontae Johnson is the most likely for another if he shows up and becomes focused on what the team needs. David Bell and Michael Woods have been hanging on by a thread for some time now, but neither is assured of anything other than a competitive camp.

WR Luke Floriea

The rest of this group? Gage Larvadain, Jaelen Gill, Kaden Davis, Kisean Johnson, Cade McDonald, DeAndre Carter, and Luke Floriea. Does that make a baker’s dozen?

Here is a guy to watch who isn’t getting any press quite yet. But he will: Luke Floriea.

Beginnings

Floriea is an undrafted rookie. That in itself usually means the road is a lot bumpier when trying to make the final roster of an NFL club. Being taken in the draft basically guarantees a certain amount of money right off, and teams aren’t anxious to cut their draft picks for at least a few seasons. How long did the Browns hold onto third-rounder WR Anthony Schwartz before releasing him? You get the point.

Back to Floriea, which is pronounced as “Flo-REE-uh.” He is an Ohio kid. He grew up in Mentor, Ohio, and attended Mentor High School, where he played basketball and football despite only being 5’-8” tall and weighing 179 pounds. Floriea was an exceptional basketball player, playing 101 contests, and averaged 11.5 points a game, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 4.4 assists. 22 times in his final three seasons, he was named the “Player of the Game.”

In football, he played receiver and ran a 4.48 in the 40 with a vertical leap of 32”. As a senior, he had 52 receptions for 939 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was named Second Team All-Ohio, First Team All-District, and First Team All-County. He was listed as a three-star recruit. Athletics run in the family as his sister Paige was a track star.

His X handle is @Luke_floriea2.

His college offers were from UMass, Boston College, Navy, Yale, Air Force, and Kent State. He signed a letter of intent to play for Boston College, but then backed out and went to Kent State. He played in three games as a freshman and was a COVID player, so he ended up eligible for five seasons.

His career totals are 48 games played, 100 receptions for 1,321 yards, 12 TDs, a 13.2 yards per reception average, and four rushes for 23 yards with a single score. Floriea was also a return man with seven kickoffs for a 17.8 yards per return average, plus 21 punt returns with an average of 7.6 yards per return.

After his junior and senior seasons, Floriea was named First Team All-MAC and received a Hula Bowl invite. As a senior, he caught 44 receptions for 699 yards with seven touchdowns. He ranked fifth in the conference in yards per catch (15.9) average.

On to the Browns

The 2025 NFL draft came and went. Floriea did not hear his name called. At his Kent State Pro Day, he ran a 4.51 in the 40, which was slower than he hoped to run.

His scouting report stated that he had a good first step and route-running prowess. Floriea is known for his precise route-running skills, which allow him to create separation from defenders. He had a good showing at the Hula Bowl. The knock on him is his size and smallish frame.

But he is an ideal slot receiver. Think Wes Welker. Floriea has a quick burst and superb route running. He’s quicker than he is fast. And while guys are going to be in Browns training camp to gather film for their future employer, Floriea seems to be focused on making a home in Cleveland. He will be in the hunt to make this team.

Luke Floriea is officially a Cleveland Brown! pic.twitter.com/sTv7rfT8r1

— Kent State Football (@KentStFootball) May 12, 2025

Floriea was one of 25 players invited to the Browns’ rookie minicamp in May. After camp broke, Berry signed three receivers on May 12th from this event: McDonald, Kisean Johnson, and Floriea.

During mini-camp, several players stood out, including QB Shedeur Sanders. But none more than Floriea. He caught everything thrown his way.

Little more @KentStFootball propaganda at #Browns rookie camp. Luke Floriea catches a TD from Shedeur Sanders. pic.twitter.com/xNHQ71v80s

— Dan Labbe (@dan_labbe) May 10, 2025

Now, understand that during this type of situation, there isn’t a pass rush, so of course, every QB throwing looks good. The guys who are covering a player such as Floriea are in the same boat as he is in: the bottom third of the roster. The pads aren’t on, and the main defense isn’t getting too sweaty or trying to impress anyone who is watching.

But that will change once training camp begins. The hitting will begin, and a brutal pass rush will make the game appear faster. No longer will a player like Floriea have a teammate who is struggling to make the roster covering him when Denzel Ward or M.J. Emerson line up against him.

The true test doesn’t begin in NFL games; it begins in Browns training camp against Pro Bowl defenders.

Prime placement to @luke_floriea2⁩, the local guy out of Mentor and ⁦@KentStFootballpic.twitter.com/Bl5SHXhwLp

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) May 10, 2025

But for now, Floriea is looking like a guy who is getting noticed. Watch him in training camp and in the preseason games. Let’s see what he can do when the lights come on.

Speaking of prototypical slot receivers such as Welker, another example is Julian Edelman, who ironically is also from Kent State.

Maybe Floriea can become one of those rare Ohio trifectas: from Mentor to Kent State to Cleveland.

2 Browns rookies noted among 25 NFL draft picks expected to make “instant-impact”

NFL: Cleveland Browns Minicamp

Ken Blaze-Imagn Images

The 2025 NFL draft could be a turning point for the Browns defense

The Cleveland Browns 2025 NFL draft will be judged based on the Travis Hunter trade, which will lead to comparisons with DT Mason Graham, RB Quinshon Judkins, and whoever the Browns select with their extra pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

Cleveland’s roster will need production from at least five of their seven-man draft class (and possibly a sixth if one of the rookie quarterbacks takes the starting role). As always in the NFL, players rarely can make an impact in a vacuum. System, talent around them and opportunities to produce are among the most important variables.

According to The NFL Network, two Browns rookie defenders should make an instant impact, starting with Graham:

Top-five picks always face immense pressure to produce, but this juicy subplot brightens the spotlight. Working in Graham’s favor: He gets to line up alongside the force of nature that is Myles Garrett. And he was one of the cleanest evals in this draft class, as a former wrestler who consistently wins with leverage, heavy hands and a non-stop motor. I anticipate early game-wreckage, inherently spawning an unthinkable development: a whole bunch of Ohioans praising a Michigan man.

Playing behind Garrett and Graham, as well as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah missing the season, should be very helpful for LB Carson Schwesinger as well:

Rangy and instinctive with skills to defend against the run or pass, Schwesinger fits the mold of the modern off-ball linebacker. And playing behind Cleveland’s Myles Garrett-led front should keep the rookie pretty clean, allowing him to fly around the field and stuff the stat sheet.

It was somewhat surprising that Judkins did not get a spot at running back. Ashton Jeanty was bound for one of two spots, but Denver Broncos RJ Harvey snagged the other despite three other backs selected ahead of him, but after Jeanty.

Haslams ‘appreciate the support’ of state lawmakers in stadium funding

Chicago Bears v Cleveland Browns

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signs state budget providing $600M for domed stadium in Brook Park. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb shares his disappointment.

The Cleveland Browns may not be loading the moving trucks just yet, but their journey to a new stadium in Brook Park is oh so close to being finalized.

Last week, state lawmakers approved $600 million, which represents half the $1.2 million in public funding to construct the domed stadium. Haslam Sports Group quickly followed by purchasing 176 acres of land near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport for the project, which, in addition to the stadium, includes a mixed-use lifestyle and entertainment district.

Governor Mike DeWine signed the state budget late Monday evening, ensuring that the $600 million will be on the way. In addition, the approved budget includes language to update the so-called Modell Law, which seeks to stop professional sports teams from leaving their taxpayer-supported stadiums unless they receive permission from city leaders or provide an opportunity for locals to buy the team.

The law now only applies to a team looking to leave the state, and as long as the team fulfills its stadium lease, the team would be considered compliant. The Browns are only moving about 13 miles away, and team ownership has said it plans to play out its current lease at Huntington Bank Field, so that should clear out the ongoing legal fight with the City of Cleveland.

Finally, the budget also guarantees that the Browns will continue to receive one-third of the revenue from Cuyahoga County’s “sin tax” on beer, wine, liquor, and cigarettes.

Thrilled to move forward on a transformative project with generational impact pic.twitter.com/gym7FVv2o2

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 1, 2025

With everything coming together in their favor, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam issued a statement on Tuesday thanking DeWine and other state leaders for their support:

“We respect the firm commitment and leadership that Governor DeWine and the Ohio Senate and House have shown in their collaborative work to find a responsible way to support such a transformative project, one that will create a generational impact for our region and the State. Our fans deserve a world-class facility, and we are committed to building a state-of-the-art enclosed stadium that resonates with Cleveland, highlighting our loyal and passionate fans and the Dawg Pound, while also incorporating innovation, bold design, and an immersive experience.

“The new enclosed Huntington Bank Field will be completely fan-centric, a first-of-its-kind design in the NFL, and a dynamic venue that draws visitors from across Ohio and beyond, for concerts and significant sporting events throughout the year. This premiere facility will anchor a major lifestyle and entertainment development and be a catalyst for one of Northeast Ohio’s largest economic development projects ever, and something our community will be proud of and can enjoy for years to come. We appreciate the support of State leaders and their belief in this transformative project.”

While this is another major step toward Brook Park, the Haslams still have a few more details to take care of before the move becomes officially official:

  • While the Modell Law language was changed to have a more realistic take on teams moving, Cleveland City officials are likely still going to put up as much of a fuss as possible, if nothing more than to look good to the voting public.

Mayor Bibb’s statement on the $600 million in taxpayer dollars designated for a domed stadium in Brook Park. pic.twitter.com/UvnUFte9Fh

— Office of Mayor Bibb (@CLEMayorsOffice) July 1, 2025

Along those lines, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb released a statement sharing his disappointment in the state:

We are deeply disappointed that the final state budget includes both a $600 million public subsidy for a domed stadium in Brook Park and changes to Ohio’s Modell Law - provisions we strongly opposed and requested be removed.

Relocating the Browns will divert economic activity from downtown, create a competing entertainment district, and disrupt the momentum of our lakefront redevelopment. It will also trigger substantial taxpayer-funded infrastructure upgrades - including highway reconfigurations and public safety enhancements - adding significant public costs on top of the stadium itself.

We also remain firmly opposed to the changes in the Modell Law, which was enacted to protect communities that have made substantial public investments in their sports teams. Undermining this statute sets a troubling precedent and leaves cities like Cleveland with fewer tools to safeguard long-standing public assets.

We are embarking on a transformative journey to revitalize our lakefront into a thriving, accessible destination that inspires and unites our community. For decades, Clevelanders have dreamed about the opportunity at our lakefront, and we want to deliver on that shared vision for the future.

With growing major public investment, including $150M in state and federal grants, the City will deliver on transformational infrastructure that will unlock redevelopment and strengthen the waterfront’s role in the region’s future.

We will continue to protect taxpayer resources and pursue this once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine our shoreline. Clevelanders deserve a world-class lakefront, and we will deliver on that promise.

Those items should be handled without too much sweat, so all that remains is for the shovels to hit the dirt in Brook Park, the team to play out its current lease through the 2028 season, and everyone can show up in the domed stadium for the opening game in September 2029.

Details on how to get Browns training camp tickets

Syndication: Akron Beacon Journal

Jeff Lange / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

With the QB competition at the forefront, Browns training camp tickets could be hot commodities

We are inching ever so close to the start of training camp for the Cleveland Browns and, this year, no trip to The Greenbrier in West Virginia. That doesn’t mean that Browns fans will have a ton of chances to see the team at camp. Two joint practices on the road continues to dwindle the number of practices open to fans.

In 2021, there were 12 practices open to fans. In 2022, it was 11 before Greenbrier trips the last two years dropped that down.

With Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders battling it out in the Browns QB competition, fans will be very interested in seeing camp practices and will have eight chances, but none after August 4th.

Fans will be able to register for training camp tickets starting July 3rd at 10 AM online. The team notes the following regarding tickets:

Tickets are free but required for all attendees age 2+

Public Availability: Tickets available Thursday, July 3 at 10 AM

Season Ticket Members: Tickets available Wednesday, July 2 at 10 AM

Ticket Info:

First-come, first-serve basis and will be limited to 4 tickets per fan, per practice

Mobile tickets only (via Browns Mobile App) — no printed tickets

Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel already getting endorsement deals

Cleveland Browns Rookie Minicamp

Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

The third-round pick is set to begin an intense QB battle

The entire NFL will be watching the Cleveland Browns this season. The reason? Their quarterback situation.

Not that anyone cares if veteran Joe Flacco wins the starting job or not. Or that Kenny Pickett, a former first-round draft pick who arrived in Cleveland via a trade, can beat Flacco out for the gig. Only Browns’ fans care about these two players.

RELATED: DRAFT DILEMMA: SUCCESS COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING

But the league as a whole wants to see the quarterback battle in training camp between the two rookie signal-callers: Dillon Gabriel from Oregon and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

Let’s clarify: With an emphasis on Sanders.

Note: Click the square lower right to make the video go full screen

College football players who have been projected to be drafted in the Top-5 do not drop to the fifth round. Ever. Maybe a round. Except for Sanders. And the fact that Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski chose Gabriel as his young QB project is compelling enough. The football universe wants to see how this movie ends before the opening credits begin.

Sanders has been labeled the future of the franchise. He has also been tabbed as trade bait. See the discrepancy? Sense the drama? And all the while, Gabriel is sandwiched in the middle of this Sanders sandwich.

Note: Click the square lower right to make the video go full screen

And while 99 out of 100 articles have been written about Sanders and his Cleveland experience, Gabriel has been fairly muted. Sanders has had sponsors before at Colorado because he was the BMOC (big man on campus) and drove fancy cars. He already has a Gatorade commercial since being drafted.

Now, Gabriel has his own endorsement deal. Not representing a Rolex GMT-Master wrist watch, or in the driver’s seat of a Rolls-Royce Hyperion. Or perhaps leaning against a Porsche 911 Turbo, truly a successful young man’s choice, who has money. Think more…..third row seating.

Stellantis North America, owner of the Chrysler Corporation, has hired Gabriel as their spokesperson for their flagship vehicle.

No, not Dodge Charger. Or the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Series III Obsidian, which starts at $112,540. Or even the most powerful production half-ton pickup truck on the market today, the Dodge Ram 1500 TRX, which has a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine that produces 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Not to mention the beast that is named the Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

Nope. Think crossover.

Packing camping equipment. Taking the lacrosse team to get pizza after the game. Bringing the family dog along for, well, everything. Showing visiting relatives the local sights. Or loading up for a day at the beach.

Chrysler Pacifica.

Not a single man’s vehicle. Maybe not even an NFL player’s choice, although guys like Browns’ Hall of Famer Joe Thomas and his wife and four kids would all fit nicely inside.

Note: Click the center of the image to begin & stop video

Then again, maybe it certainly is a Dillon Gabriel vehicle. After all, he proposed to his girlfriend Zo Caswell in early September of 2024 before his final year at Oregon.

The two met when he was 12 years old during a school orientation gardening session and have been dating seriously since high school. His parents are ethnic native Hawaiians, while Zo was born and raised in Hawai’i as well and comes from a mixed background, a Japanese father and an American mother.

If that isn’t a minivan couple, who is?

Why Chrysler? And more specifically, a friggin’ minivan?

Gabriel owned a white Pacifica with a black interior when he played for Oregon that seated seven. He was the task master on the team and frequently drove his teammates around, picking them up for practices and team meetings in order to get them there on time. It also gave him and his teammates an opportunity to hang out together in a small group instead of just one or two guys.

Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel has signed an deal with Chrysler to become a brand ambassador for the Pacifica minivan.

Now, Gabriel has signed an endorsement deal with Chrysler to become a brand ambassador for their famous, award-winning minivan. For soccer moms. The dad van. It is his first endorsement deal as a professional football player. The deal was facilitated by athlete marketplace Opendorse.

While at Oregon, Gabriel would often talk about his love for his minivan, even in interviews. That sparked interest at Chrysler once he became a third-round draft pick of the Browns.

Chris Feuell, Chrysler brand CEO, told Fox 8 TV:

“We’re thrilled that Dillon selected the Pacifica minivan as his personal vehicle. Dillon could drive pretty much whatever he wants, and we are honored that he chose the segment-leading Pacifica, which offers the safety, comfort and style he needs to travel with his teammates—and the opportunity to create lasting memories along the way. We’re proud to continue to support Dillon’s journey as he begins his NFL career and builds bonds with his fellow teammates.”

RELATED: DILLON GABRIEL INTERVIEW

Gabriel loved his minivan. And still does. He has said that a bunch of teammates riding to their favorite restaurant or to practice builds team spirit. The rookie quarterback, who is known for his humility and generosity, still seeks that connection among his new comrades.

Gabriel stated:

“I always like to joke around that I’m built for comfort. In addition, given insurance, cost and being able to have space for other people, I’ve always loved the minivan so I try to use it to my advantage. I think the cool part is, you know in high school you go on these trips together whether it’s in another state, on the plane, in the hotel, (it’s) things you remember for a lifetime.”

Chrysler began in 1925, meaning this is the company’s 100th year of operation. The original Chrysler Corporation was founded by Walter Chrysler, who worked in the railroad industry before accepting a job at the Buick Motor Company as a production chief.

A special 2026 Pacifica 100th Anniversary Edition model has been introduced to commemorate the anniversary, including new “Est. 1925” Chrysler wing badge decal, Luster Gray polished wheels, semi-gloss Granite Crystal fascia and grille trim, and semi-gloss Granite Crystal Chrysler wing grille badge.

It also features the patented “Stow ‘n Go Seats” which the company invented that has been copied by just about every other car manufacturer. It is also available with all-wheel drive.

Keeping with the anniversary angle as an American car manufacturer, the only colors available for the Pacifica Anniversary model are Red Hot, Bright White, and Hydro Blue.

Gabriel continued:

“When things aren’t mandatory, having the car ride to go grab a bite to eat or even when you have the downtime retreat, we all kind of carpool because there’s a longer drive so with all of that, I think it just helps having a vehicle that can fit everyone.”

In college, Gabriel had a number of deals with Beats by Dre, Celsius, Great Clips, and Addition Financial.

The Browns open training camp for rookies on July 18, while the veterans report on July 22.

Browns Reacts Survey - What are your expectations for the running game?

Cleveland Browns Mandatory Minicamp

There's a lot of changes up front this year.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cleveland Browns fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Cleveland Browns have significantly changed their backfield this year with two new running backs who were drafted in the second and fourth rounds, and saying goodbye to Nick Chubb.

The offensive line remains mostly the same, except that Jedrick Wills is not in the picture at left tackle. The line has seemed to regress a bit over the past two seasons, though. Is it due to the line getting up there in age? Or was it the efficient zone blocking scheme being stripped from them when it was their strength?

This year, it's back to Kevin Stefanski's offense, so we want you to let us know below what your expectations are for the ground game.

Browns: Which players made ESPN’s list of the best draft picks ever?

Rob Burnett Browns

Joel Bitonio and Rob Burnett are on the list. But are there other Cleveland players who should have made the cut?

The Cleveland Browns, like every other NFL team, have had their share of misses when it comes to the NFL Draft.

Guard Pete Adams instead of guard Joe DeLamielleure in 1973. Offensive tackle Billy Corbett instead of tight end Dave Casper or linebacker Jack Lambert in 1974. Linebackers Mike Junkin in 1987 and Clifford Charlton in 1988. Defensive tackle Gerrard Warren instead of running back LaDainian Tomlinson or defensive end Richard Seymour in 2001. Anyone but quarterback Johnny Manziel in 2014.

Related: Browns All Quarter Century, plus 1 (since The Return), team

It has not all been doom and gloom, however, with notable selections including Hall of Fame running back Leroy Kelly in the eighth round in 1964, running back Nick Chubb in the third round of 2018, the first-round double dip of Hall of Fame tight end Ozzie Newsome and linebacker Clay Matthews in 1978, and quarterback Brian Sipe in the 13th round in 1972.

But who are the best all-time draft picks ever at every spot in the draft, and which Cleveland players are included?

That is a question that ESPN’s Ben Solak tries to answer by looking at every draft since 1967, when the common draft era began, to determine the best players selected from No. 1 through No. 262 overall.

The Browns had two players represented, starting with guard Joel Bitonio, the No. 35 overall pick in 2014:

There are a few good active players here, including Andy Dalton and Zach Ertz. But Bitonio looks like a Browns lifer, has made five All-Pro lists and might be considered the best guard of the past decade of football if not for Zack Martin being, you know ... the best guard of the past decade of football.

The second Cleveland player is defensive end Rob Burnett, the 129th overall selection in the 1990 draft. Burnett spent the first six seasons of his 14-year NFL career with the Browns. He played in 93 games, had 333 tackles and 40.5 sacks, which is ninth-best on the franchise’s all-time list, and 10 sacks in 1994 as he made the Pro Bowl.

Burnett went on to play six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and two with the Miami Dolphins, retiring after the 2023 season with 73 career sacks.

But what about some of the other notable Cleveland players who did not make the list?

  • Joe Thomas, who was selected at No. 3 in 2007, was edged out by Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions. Fair enough
  • Eric Turner, who was selected at No. 2 in 1991, was edged out by Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants. No argument there.
  • Michael Dean Perry, who was selected at No. 50 overall in 1988, was beaten out by Willie Lanier of the Kansas City Chiefs. That one may be closer than some realize.
  • What about Matthews (No. 12 overall) and Newsome (No. 23)? Warren Sapp of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was Solak’s choice at No. 12, which is fair. But Ty Law of the New England Patriots over Newsome at No. 23? Not sure we are buying that one.

Anyway, it’s a fun discussion point for a slow NFL news day, so now it is your turn. Are there any Cleveland players that you think should be on the list? Let us know in the comments!

This sure-tackling safety came to the Browns after every major college program wanted him

The defensive back room has several jobs up for grabs

Take a glance at the Cleveland Browns’ safety room. Satisfied with what you see?

After last year, this group was in big trouble. Only two safeties remained on the roster after Rodney McLeod retired after 13 seasons, D’Anthony Bell wasn’t given an extension and signed with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency, practice squad safety Trey Dean wasn’t re-signed, and GM Andrew Berry released Juan Thornhill with one more year remaining on his three-year deal.

All that remained was starting strong safety Grant Delpit and the first sub off the bench in Ronnie Hickman. Yep, that was it.

It was assumed that Berry would select a young safety in this year’s NFL draft. The second-best safety prospect, Nick Emmanwori of South Carolina, was available when the Browns were on the clock at pick #33, which was the first pick in Round 2. Penn State’s Kevin Winston, Jr. was also on the board at pick #67, and again, Berry selected another player. Winston was ranked as the third-best safety in this year’s class.

Luckily, Berry later inked three veterans: Damontae Kazee of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rayshawn Jenkins from the Seattle Seahawks, and practice squad player Chris Edmonds. The veterans offer leadership, but they demonstrate different things for the back end of the defense.

After the draft concluded, Berry signed a safety that wasn’t selected: Donovan McMillon from Pittsburgh. And guess what? McMillon could very well make this roster.

Beginnings

McMillon is a Pennsylvania kid. He grew up in McMurray, just 22 miles south of Pittsburgh. He attended Peters Township High School, which has a total enrollment of just over 1,200 students for all four grades. He was a wrestler and played safety on the football squad.

As a member of the wrestling team, McMillon was the WPIAL and PIAA Class 3A runner-up at 182 pounds. He had more success playing football for a school that went 20-3 in his final two years.

In his senior season, McMillon became one of the WPIAL’s most sought-after players. Rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was ranked as the nation’s #6 safety and sixth-overall athlete in the State of Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette puts out a “Fabulous 22” after each football season, which covers a large region, and McMillon was listed as one of the safeties.

His X handle is @donovanmcmillo3 while his Instagram is @donovan_mcmillon3.

I’ve loved every minute of this recruiting process...one step closer today...thank you coaches for allowing me to enjoy it. Recruitment Still Open... #TOP15 ! pic.twitter.com/VjVH9A8AiV

— Donovan McMillon (@donovanmcmillo3) March 27, 2020

The schools who attempted to recruit McMillon and either contacted him or made him an offer is a laundry list: Florida, Georgia, Miami of Ohio, LSU, Oregon, Liberty, Miami, Texas A&M, Air Force, Marshall, Oklahoma, Central Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, Army, Michigan, Penn State, Old Dominion, Iowa, Eastern Michigan, Tennessee, Maryland, Kentucky, Arizona State, Rutgers, Pitt, Bowling Green, Virginia, UMass, Kent State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Stanford, Akron, Northwestern, Boston College, Indiana, Harvard, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Duke, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Toledo, Purdue, Buffalo, Penn, and Lehigh.

Even though there were plenty of colleges within a 50-mile radius of his hometown, he chose Florida and the SEC.

Despite his success at the high school level, McMillon played mainly on special teams in his first two seasons at Florida but contributed in 25 games. He was listed as a backup safety, but played minimally on the standard defense. Aggravated that his playing time was in a limited role, he entered the transfer portal. He was the 15th player from the Florida roster to leave that year.

He did leave a note for his former team:

“From day one, I gave this program everything in me to earn the opportunity to help this team. In order to obtain all of my goals and aspirations, my family and I have decided it’s best for me to enter the transfer portal. First and foremost, I want to thank my teammates. Loved competing with you guys at the highest level, and I’ll never forget the blood, sweat, and tears we went through. I also want to thank Coach Dan Mullen and his assistant coach, Ron English, for recruiting this tough-nosed wrestler out of Pennsylvania. I absolutely loved throwing my body all over the field the last two years for this program. I’d like to thank head coach Napier, DC coach Toney, and his staff and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

Just like coming out of high school, McMillon was highly recruited as a portal prospect and once again had his pick of colleges. In the end, he chose to return to his roots and attend Pitt, where the year before their defense was ranked in the Top 20.

McMillon discussed the move, saying:

“It all just works because I’m a Pittsburgh guy. Being able to play in an aggressive defense and win, that’s really important to me. I just think they are a really consistent program. For my family at least, they are going to be able to get to every game now, and that’s really good as well.”

And Holy Moses did he produce. McMillon played in all 12 games with 105 total tackles, one forced fumble, one batted pass, and one tackle for loss. He demonstrated that he could be a downhill defender who was both physical and aggressive. He also had a good feel in curl-flat coverage and could play a rover or be inserted at linebacker if needed when five defensive backs were on the field.

McMillon did show that he was more of a run-support safety than a cover safety. Physicality was his calling card, with some versatility. At season’s end, he was named Honorable Mention All-ACC.

He improved in his senior year. He totaled 13 games with 115 tackles with one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, eight batted passes, and a single interception. McMillon was voted Second Team All-ACC and led Pitt in tackles for the second straight year. Twice, he was named to the “ACC Team of the Week” roster. He totaled 11 tackles against Boston College and 15 tackles versus Cincinnati. He was then a Hula Bowl invitee.

Before the draft, the scouting report on NFL Draft Buzz was the following:

Pros

  • Can deliver the big hit and isn’t afraid to jump inside to slow the ball.
  • Strong hands to make plays on the ball, effective blitzer who shows well-coached technique and awareness.
  • Has the violent hands to discard receivers and smaller tight ends, and McMillon is a sure tackler. In coverage, he shows good instincts when sitting back in zone, with click-and-close ability and good ball tracking.
  • He’s also very good in zone coverage, showing a great understanding of routes and the ability to close quickly.
  • He’s a willing and capable hitter in run support and closes fast to make plays against quick screens.
  • McMillon is aggressive in run support, with a physical mentality, but struggles to break down space and leaves production on the field.

Cons

  • Despite his size, he’s not an overly physical tackler. McMillon might have to add some weight at the next level in order to become more physical.
  • Lacks the quick feet to mirror underneath and is slow to transition out of his backpedal and close on the ball
  • McMillon gets beat over the top too often, and McMillon tends to panic and get too handsy when running downfield.

One thing to know: McMillon is a coach’s kid. But not just a coach’s kid, but a double-decker coach’s kid. His father is a defensive coordinator, which plays into McMillon’s defensive mindset. His mother has been a basketball coach for over 30 years. Coach’s kids always bring three things: a solid work ethic, they keep their mouths shut, and there is no quit in them.

The Browns call quickly

McMillon’s (6’-2”, 203 pounds) best time in the 40 was 4.46 with 10’ 5” in the broad jump. Immediately after the draft, Berry called McMillon and offered him a training camp contract.

To show how much the Browns wanted McMillon, Berry inked him to a three-year deal worth $2,975,000, including a $10,000 signing bonus with $210,000 guaranteed. Absolutely unheard of numbers for an undrafted rookie free agent.

What does that tell you?

His signing with Cleveland sparked some interest in the media. He was projected as a fifth-round pick, yet did not hear his name called. Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic wrote an article entitled, “NFL Draft 2025’s best undrafted free agent fits”. One player to watch on each team.”

For the Browns, Baumgardner’s selection on his list was McMillon:

“Another big safety, McMillon played both safety spots and, in the slot, the last two years for Pitt, after spending time at Florida. He ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash with a 35-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump. An aggressive coverage player, McMillon broke up five passes and forced six incompletions last year.”

McMillon is a beast in the run-stopping game but needs tutelage in certain aspects of pass coverage. That may explain his high tackling numbers, yet few passing stats. This may be attributed to him being a former wrestler and looking for body contact.

Traditionally, the Browns keep four active safeties during the Berry/Kevin Stefanski era and at least one on the practice squad. They kept five one year when Joe Woods was the DC because he played the 4-2-5 on 85% of defensive reps. Most of the time, the two linebackers were actually a linebacker and a safety, like Ronnie Harrison. Safety Richard LeCounte was the fifth player in this group that year.

But count on just four safeties to make the final roster. Grant Delpit and Ronnie Hickman make up half. That leaves Kazee, Jenkins, and probably McMillon as competitors for the other two slots.

Cleveland’s lack of depth at the safety position is a serious issue. Take a glance at McMillon’s contract once again. Teams don’t cut guys who sign with those types of numbers.

Compare his digits to the two veterans that were signed: Damontae Kazee – One year for $1.42 million, and Jenkins - One year for $1.42 million. Jenkins does have $1.167 million guaranteed, while Kazee has $1 million guaranteed.

One thing is for certain: McMillon was not signed to be training camp fodder. He was brought in to compete for one of the final spots available in this year’s safety room.

Browns worst decisions since 1999, Top 25 edition

Cleveland Browns Mandatory Minicamp

Jimmy Haslam takes the cake due to his role in Deshaun Watson, Hue Jackson

Listen, apologies for the negativity on a site that strives to bring you mostly positives along with the news. The reality of the Cleveland Browns recent history is mostly negative, so much so that it is actually difficult to limit the list of worst decisions down to 25, but we wanted to give it a chance.

First, we sought out your feedback on what decisions stood out to you. We received some good feedback, including some lists like this one:

#ForeverBrowns
Someone/group not stepping up to buy the team before Mosmell skipped town.
Numerous flawed GM's
Getting Haslam as an owner
Relying on analytics to build a team rather than talent on tape
Drafting Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert - dynamic duo busts!
Mishandling of Baker
Trading for OBJ
Trading for Deshaun - #worsttradeEVER
Building a damn domed stadium
Not building a competitive team

Second, we realize that no list will be fully agreed upon, but most likely, the first three (in some order) will be agreed upon by most Browns fans.

Finally, along with Browns FilmBreakdown, we talked through some of the top mistakes. You can see a video of Part 1 down at the bottom of this post.

  1. Jimmy Haslam buys the team
  2. Deshaun Watson
  3. Hue Jackson
  4. Kyle Shanahan’s escape
  5. Odell Beckham trade
  6. John Dorsey
  7. OL Failure for Tim Couch
  8. Justin Gilbert/Johnny Manziel
  9. Hiring Freddy Kitchens
  10. Mitchell Schwartz, Alex Mack leaving
  11. Julio Jones Trade
  12. Drafting Brandon Weeden
  13. Paul DePodesta
  14. Letting Baker Mayfield play injured
  15. Alec Sheiner’s trash uniforms with “Browns” running down the leg
  16. Jim O’Neal as DC
  17. Ray Farmer text scandal
  18. Pat Shurmer, Rod Chudzinsky (especially with Travis Kelce begging to be drafted)
  19. The Danny Shelton, Cam Erving draft
  20. GPODAWUND and hashtag DP
  21. Gerard Warren selection
  22. 2016 NFL draft
  23. Numerous GM hires
  24. Tristan Wirfs
  25. Kamerion Wimbley, Haloti Ngata trade

Now, after sending you down that negative worm hole, you tell us, what did we miss since 1999? Is there a mistake you would move way up or way down our list?
